stanford pledge of allegiance yes i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all mr fano okay mr roman gina i'd like to take the role if i may uh mrs abreu here mr capano here mrs fredo here mr garcigan uh mr nadroo dr pontiana here mr russo mr shelley mr tarabaki here mr yunus here okay mr romajin i just like to read a quick statement if i may the new jersey open public meetings law was enacted to ensure the rights of the public to have advanced notice of and to attend the meeting of public bodies at which any business affecting their interest is discussed or acted upon in accordance with the provision of
the sacrifice park board that has caused notice of this meeting to be published by having the date time in place thereof posted in the office of the borough clerk borough library her wreck department the office of the board of ed and the offices of school numbers three four five and six and the high school on july 11 2022 and notices were forwarded to reporters of the record july 11 2022 this is an official meeting okay thank you very much mr alfano i want to welcome everyone to our meeting uh just a couple of items i have before we look at the consent agenda i just want to take this opportunity to thank our administrators our custodial staff mr alfano mr spinella for doing really a great job in our buildings this summer tomorrow september 1st
the staff all of our teachers report back to the buildings september 8th our students begin uh in grades k-12 and the following monday on the 12th september 12th our pre-k program begins so i do want to thank everyone that had a hand in getting our facilities uh ready for the opening of school this this september i do want to make note to our um board members that in your folder is a copy of the staff newsletter that went out um i gave you a copy of the newsletter just so you could uh look over the schedule that uh we will be following the first couple of days of school thursday friday tuesday and wednesday a lot of different professional development opportunities for staff members and and then on thursday wednesday we have a grade 7
orientation and on thursday as i said everyone returned so when you get a chance you can look through that i do want to make mention i did post some information on our website for the opening of school time schedule things like that that parents can refer to one thing that's not on the website website are our covert guidelines for this coming school year the reason for that is that the cdc has updated their guidelines for um for schools but the new jersey department of health has not done so yet usually they would send a memo out to school districts they haven't done that i'm hoping i'm hoping that we will receive something prior to students coming back next thursday and when i do um i'll post a summary of the covert guidelines on our website
and share them with parents and also with staff we do know now that there is no quarantining there is no remote learning that obviously if someone is positive for covid they have to stay home five days return on day six so hopefully as we did last year uh when we returned it was a much better year than the previous years and i look forward for this year to be 99.9 normal so let's hope that that's the case i am uh happy to announce to the board uh i did it through an email that we went through a cusack uh monitoring back in january everyone in the district really had a hand in it i do want to thank mrs calabrese our administrative team and some of the people that served on our committees who worked
on cusack but the county did come in they have certified us for three years that's the term right now so there is a letter posted to our website uh commending the district and approving the fact that we we are qsac certified so i do want to thank everyone that was involved with that re-registration as you know in the spring and this summer we have gone through a re-registration initially for grades 3 6 and 10. there are very few students that or parents that haven't verified their residency so our principals have notified parents who have students in those grade levels that in order to begin school on september 8th they must come up to the school office and verify their residency they have been making phone calls and hopefully we're pretty confident that by the time
school starts we will have all of our residency checks for those three grades if that's the case then in the four we'll move on to three other grade levels and do the same thing that we did this past spring so if that's the case then i'm hoping that this coming school year we'll probably be able to do anywhere from six to nine more grade levels and try to finish everything up as quickly as possible but i do want to thank parents who have cooperated come up during the summer and so so far it's worked out very well i also want to mention that on our website or will be on our website and the parent portal there is a letter going out to parents about the new health standards uh as you know there has
been some controversy about some of the topics that the state is mandating i do want to emphasize the fact that it's not a district decision it's a new jersey department of education decision as far as what the standards are we can decide how we teach it but the state determines what we have to teach so there is a letter going out to parents students in the elementary grades will be hand carrying the letter home students in the middle school in the high school will be posted to the website parents will have as part of that letter an opportunity to search uh sites namely cliffside parks curriculum and also some resource sites that parents can go to that will give them information about what the curriculum is going to be all about how we're going to
be addressing it having said that there is if you look on the second side of the letter an opt-out form for parents so if there's a particular topic that parents do not want their child to be part of they can send the op out opt out form back to their school principal and they'll be opted out of that particular lesson they'll be given some other instructional opportunities during that time so this is all new to us as far as the new standards are concerned but i'm pretty confident that with our curriculum the way it is and some of the resources and the professional development for teachers i'm confident it'll work out but again if parents have questions they can contact my office or they can contact their principal's office to clarify any any questions that
they may have but the letter will be going out next week it will be posted to our website uh probably tomorrow and also as part of the parent portal so when parents go into the paraportal and they log in the first thing they see is this letter so this way it's a way of getting as much information out as possible okay at that point i'll i'll stop if any board members have any questions i have a question about the parent portal posting if they do want to opt out and they're on their parent portal do they do it electronically or do they have to print it out and send it down good question i think they're going to have to download it yeah they're going to have to download the form which they can do
on the website okay or they could get the form when their child brings it home and then they would have to actually send it into school and what would happen is the uh if the classroom teacher will collect it that that teacher will work with the principal to make sure that that student is is pulled out during that time thank you and as time goes on uh then we may make it available where either on the website or maybe on the portal it might be a pdf where you can actually enter the information and then it will be sent to the principals thank you okay uh in reference to the re-registration i know it's early in the game and uh have an assessment uh i know it's early but it has an assessment done with
the grades that have completed so far that everybody that's re-registered in the grades that we're registering has verified that they live in kosovo but have we seen uh any problems well as far as as far as people moving we really don't know that sometimes till kids return now in september now some of these people that haven't re-registered yet right those may be people who have moved but usually people don't notify us that they move what will happen is when we start school next week there might be a child's name on the roster and if they're not there then the first thing the secretaries do is make calls to the home saying have you moved and so on but i would have to say right now based on the information that i received from our principals
that the majority of parents have re-registered and have proved residency based on the criteria that we gave them okay okay and i'll and when we get into the second part of it um what i'll do then is i can share maybe more specific information with the board as far as have there been people that have come up and the information that they're providing wasn't sufficient so on and so forth so so we'll do that and i just want to uh congratulate the district again for the cusack because i'm not sure you mentioned it at this particular meeting but cliffside park was designated as high performing yes yes and i think that that's really waterborne everybody deserves congratulations right i agree because uh you know we are designated among the best and foreign yeah and that's
this is the second time in a row we've gone through cusack that that's happened so yeah the staff like i said staff administration the supervisors uh all should be commended for their work in that okay so um i'll look at the consent agenda uh there are a number of items i'm gonna point out a lot of personnel changes but i'm on page let's skip it around here i'm sorry i'm on page two um i'm gonna skip the first resolution i'll come back to that because it's tied to another one but andrea carden who retired last december as a supervisor were appointing as an interim supervisor of instruction andrew will probably be working with us two days a week for a short period of time she's gonna help with the transition uh of a new supervisor
of special ed that that we have in the district candace rowan uh andrea's gonna also help out with some of the observations and andrea's position was approved by the county superintendent and she will probably start with us september 12th to monday and work some mondays and wednesdays throughout the four next resolution gohan balaban is a new esl teacher that'll be starting with us on or around october 25th the reason for that is right now he's employed in paterson and he has resigned but as of right now they'll they're going to hold them to 60 days as per their contract uh alexander ebron is a new high school english teacher who will also be working in some of our special ed program he'll be uh we're pending his certification so he'll be starting as a permanent
sub and the reason why we're waiting for the certification is he's certified in new york and it has to be transferred over to new jersey and that will take uh probably a couple of weeks uh ashley gonzalez who's been a part-time title one teacher with us is going to be a full-time teacher from september to december uh filling in for a maternity leave in school four once january comes and the teacher returns ashley gonzalez will go back to part-time title one so she's actually helping us out and we appreciate that carolina alejo uh will is appointed as a 12-month secretary assigned to the middle school carolyn was previously a teacher aide with us at school four uh flipping over to school page three the second resolution gabriel depena who works with us as a coach
also with a permanent sub with us last night is filling in for a leave replacement at school six in the social studies department and gabriella is also very close to receiving her certification in social studies right now we're just appointing her as a permanent sub i'm going to skip right over to page four marianna elias who's a teacher aide but also a certified sub is going to be filling in at school three as the media specialist from september through december uh iman uh teacher rated school four is going to be filling in also as a permanent substitute in one of our resource room classes from september through december and again the reason for some of our substitutes serving as permanent subs is because it's been very very challenging to get teachers to fill those positions
especially in the special education area extremely challenging uh and we it's not for a lack of effort on our part it's just been difficult and a lot of districts are experienced the same challenges we have been facing as far as hiring staff jason hiles who worked with us last year will be a permanent sub assigned to the high school jet meyer who worked with us last year as a permanent sub in our title one position uh jeremiah's also very close to reconciling her certification she's gonna work as a title one part-time teacher at school number three these are all temporary until the positions are filled um page five uh we haven't we haven't appointed all the spring coaches yet uh we will do that in our september meeting but we are temporarily appointing some of
the head coaches so they can work with the program but before i we get to that third resolution down we're rescinding uh carly cerrone who worked with us for a number of years did a great job but she decided to resign as head girls basketball coach kathleen johnson uh has resigned this cross country middle school girls coach and brandy ludora has resigned as assistant basketball coach but we will we are appointing brandy as uh the head basketball coach for girls so if you look at the next resolution we are approving the following uh gabriel de middle school cross country brandy ludora who has worked in the program for a number of years uh as head basketball coach mccarty mackenzie doughty assistant basketball coach and then three head coaches for the spring that uh we are
appointing now so they could start the program mike scott zafada who's been involved in our baseball program danielle cebelli who's our head girls soccer coach will now be head softball and ivy keswick who is new to the district will be head boys tennis coach last resolution we're rescinding an irs inrs coordinator position nicole rowe she's decided not to do that in lieu of a change in her teaching position in our district if we go down to the bottom of page six we're just approving two maternity leaves lucy kanakis is school psychologist she'll be leaving in november and returning in march gabriella chamul is a special education teacher at school six she is leaving in january and returning in april so those are positions that will also have to be filled page seven at the top
jonathan guerrero high school social studies teacher is asking for an unpaid family leave uh from i'm sorry october 18th through january 2nd vicky bucko who's been out on maternity leave has asked for an extension through february 1st uh marita helleja is a teacher aide and is asking for a three month actually yeah three-month unpaid medical leave i'll skip down to eventh molinado who's our media specialist school three um avett has already uh has already submitted her request but we're just changing some of the dates somewhat but she'll be returning january 3rd to hub position bottom of page seven uh those are teachers in our uh i'm sorry those transfers yeah ashley santosaro is going from pre-k to grade two at school five allison meredith is going from resource room teacher at school six back to
school four as a resource room teacher and nicole rowe who's been a resource root resource room teacher at school for is going to be teaching in our autism program in school four and the last resolution on that page is we're accepting the resolution of generouso who's been our director of special services october 14 and that's why the very first resolution that i skipped was a resolution stating that i am recommending to appoint charlene pinto as interim director of special services effective honor about november 1st and uh had a salary of 135 000. charlene right now is working in asbury park she'll be submitting her resignation tomorrow after we appoint her and hopefully uh if they don't hold it to her 60 days so she'll be coming to us sooner and as you know i did
email the board at resol an email this week with her resume and i think we're very fortunate to find someone who has the experience she has and i'm very confident that she'll work out in that position it will work out uh top of page a yes christine scrima who's been a special ed teacher has resigned to take a position in another district as has chris ventura who's been a social studies teacher resigned to take a position in another district cynthia mourinho who's been a secretary with us has resigned to take a position elsewhere kelly lisa who's been a secretary with us who's has resigned to take a position elsewhere uh melanie brooks who's been a high school esl teacher has resigned to take a position elsewhere and shantae glover who's been a speech teacher with
us speech pathologist has resigned to take a position elsewhere i believe all of those positions that i just read to you have been filled and those people will start those new people will start september first if i skip over to page nine uh as per contract with the cpa uh anybody any uh a staff member can submit prior to august 31st a change in their classification so this is based on graduate classes that they put in for that i approved and that they've successfully completed so they're moving from one salary class classification to another and that's on page nine and it continues on page ten and eleven also on page eleven uh you'll see we have a listing of staff members and there's the south either all of their salary or part of their salary
that's been appropriated to title one or title two funds and basically what that means is that the local funds are not paying those salaries those salaries are coming out of federal funds that we receive referred to as nclb funding which was broken down into title 1 title ii and also pre-k salaries at the bottom of page 11 all of that all of the salaries or a good portion of those salaries are paid by uh pre-k funding that we receive so that's a savings for the district as far as our local budget is concerned and it's well spent uh can i continue the type of page of 12 is also some changing in the salaries and then on pages 12 13 we're appointing lunch aids in the district based on uh minimum minimum hourly wage that
the governor has set and we are also approving aids on page and 14. okay i know i said a lot i'm just going to finish up on page 16. on page 16 the third resolution down we are approving cliffside park school district's emergency remote plan for 2020 2023 the governor and the department of education is still requiring all school districts in the state to submit a plan that's been pre-approved by the board by september 30th so um our plan is complete i believe i emailed the board a plan about a week ago when i finalized the plan i just made some updates i will send the board an updated plan but basically it's the same plan as last year and what it is is what happens if we have to go remote what we do
as far as computers are concerned instruction is concerned a time schedule is concerned and so on and so forth and it is it does mirror the plan from last year uh and it will be posted to our website uh as soon as the board approves it tonight for parents to view uh just approving um or accepting the results of cusack which we spoke about uh we're aligning uh our curriculum we've done a lot of this already but we're aligning the 2020 new jersey student learning standards to cliffside park school district's k-12 curriculum we've made a lot of and i want to commend mrs calabrese and our supervisors they did a lot of work on curriculum over the summer uh i believe it's all posted up to the website yes so parents can look to the
website for all of our updated curriculum and then as mandated by the state uh we're also providing high school graduation data from june of 2022 just briefly a number of students graduated 281 a number of students graduated under the substitute compensatory test process go competency test process ela and math the numbers are there um we did poor portfolio appeals these are for students who probably because of challenges due to language they were not able to pass the new jersey proficiency test so they have the opportunity of doing portfolio assessments or taking alternate tests a number of students receiving high school diplomas as a result of meeting alternative requirements for ieps eight total number of students denied graduation in 12th grade five due to failing classes and not attending summer school so we had approximately a
graduating class of 2 86 and 281 students graduated five did not a number of students denied graduation uh because of failure of the park test and so on was zero so i think we did a pretty good job and you're going to see that also our high school graduation rate or percent is also going to show a nice increase this year as soon as we get that data from uh new jersey small and i'm up to finance mr alfano there's a couple items from gino thank you um we met with the board the work session last week went over all our capital projects the roof replacement high school office renovation the masonry they're going again pretty much according to plan i think if we look back eight or nine months ago when we took on
all this work and where we are today i think we'd be very happy i think the good news by the time the students come in most of the major work the noisy work the demolition work will all be completed and we'll have you know roofs that no longer leak and we'll have a brand new uh administrative office in the high school we'll have new masonry we'll also prevent uh water infiltration in the schools which will allow us to potentially do some gym lobby renovation and some other cool team cool items out in the courtyard for the high school all our summer projects floors bathrooms you know the kind of the block and tackle work all are completed our orders have been on site the last week and a half for our 21 22 school year
they've been here for five site visits this is unusually early they usually don't come in the summer they usually come towards the end of september but they wanted to come early we welcome them as i say about auditors the quicker you can get them in the quicker you can get them out and hopefully by the end of september we'll have an idea of our surplus and any findings uh i will then communicate that to the finance committee and the board and with those uh with the surplus we will then do an assessment in regard to what capital project we'd like to take on next spring and summer 2023 again we'll uh we'll assess the projects we'll meet with the finance committee and the buildings and grounds committee and then we'll bubble that up to the
entire board and we'll prioritize based on the dollars we have available we've pretty much closed our 21-22 school year we've opened up our 22-23 school year and we are starting to work on the 23-24 budget and the first order of business of that in regard to the 2324 budget is assessing what we're going to do with our surplus and our capital money in regard to projects for next spring and summer so a lot going on but that's pretty much it mr eugene one thing i did forget to do is i forgot to ask for committee reports so i don't know if mr capano i know you usually speak about buildings and grounds if you wanted to add anything to what mr alfano spoke about thank you uh uh work session last wednesday and a lot
of good points came up about the containers over at the high school and i know our building and ground supervisor met with joe rush in the borough and they were able uh wishes to move them to expand the courtyard and then being moved to a designated area of the the high school that is owned by the borough near the skateboard the park park and the only thing that the borough didn't ask is that we could fence it in to spruce it up and i believe that uh we had agreed to that and we'll take it from there but they are being moved in the courtyard now it's expanded where certain programs can be moved outside nice weather yeah so i think the uh the tentative date hopefully maybe october 15th that october 15th maybe the
court you ought to be ready i know mr pinto ordered additional tables chairs so when the students are outside and the weather's nice they'll have a bigger area too thank you very much uh like lou indicated a lot of projects went on um based on my 19 years on and off this board happened to say this was probably one of the biggest capital improvement projects the board of education has ever undertaken in one summer major uh projects and uh you know our our facilities are old but they're in tip-top shape and uh we should all be commended on this board and uh from mr romagino to alfano for the great uh work uh budgeting-wise and also the upkeep of our buildings our uh custodians and uh staffs with the principals and teachers and supervisors should
be commended because the buildings aren't great and great i'm sorry great position and welcome so that's pretty much it okay uh any questions or comments on the consent agenda before we ask for a motion to accept i'll make a motion to accept is that mr capano may i have a second if i may please second that mr tarabaki thank you okay i'll now take a motion uh mrs abreu um yes except i am staying on page 13. was that page 13 yes mr capano yes mrs freda yes mr nadrew yes dr pompliano yes mr tarabaki yes mr yanuzi yes so move mr romagina okay i just want to make mention that there are a number of programs going on in september parent visitation evenings things like that so i will send uh some reminders out
to the board uh next week after labor day weekend and september 28th is our next um open board meeting okay thank you very much uh motion to close okay thank you mr capano thank you everyone on the board thank you for all your support uh especially with all these capital projects we we appreciate it we know there it's it's a challenge and getting schools open and lots of containers and
