002for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all you may be seated good evening and welcome to our first annual clifton high school senior awards ceremony this evening is meant to highlight the accomplishments of our senior class in athletics and academics in addition to receiving their academic awards and their senior mvp awards our seniors will be receiving awards in seal of by literacy national honor society as well as various local scholarships in the past this event has been spread over three or four smaller events however as times are now we wanted to have an event that would highlight and celebrate the accomplishments of this amazing senior class while providing the safest environment possible for our students and their families i thank you for coming this evening and now with
003a few words president of the board of education mr jim smith [Applause] thank you president dr parents students fellow board members good evening what a great night this is for all the parents sitting in the stands that have worked so hard with your children over their years at clifton high [Music] school to be with them on this night to receive their awards in athletics in scholarship and most of all in academics [Music] parents you should be very proud of your students your children for the accomplishments that they made and students you should be very thankful to your parents for all that they did their dedication their devotion and their support during your four years in high school to be here tonight to receive your award that is a tremendous and great honor please don't put

005of education commissioners parents guardians family members high school administration staff and most importantly the class of 2021 it is a privilege to stand before you tonight as your superintendent on such a significant evening seniors i want you to take a moment look around at your peers and notice that while you may come from very different backgrounds you share a very common thread not one of you to take an easy path throughout high school [Music] you made your education and your coursework a priority some of you excelled on the field or the court others devoted their time to volunteering many found their calling on the stage or in that awesome marching band and for more than a few it was all of the above and more and your journey hasn't been easy especially this past year
006[Music] but you set up a high bar for yourselves that require time effort and patience and most of all tremendous dedication to achieve those goals thomas edison the famous inventor from new jersey once said there is no substitute for hard work and he was right you knew inherently that there was no substitute for hard work so tonight that hard work has paid off and your perseverance is rewarded while you reflect on your success take a moment to acknowledge your parents teachers family and friends who encouraged you with each test that you aced point that you scored tune that you played or event where you volunteered there was someone on the sideline cheering for you and proud of you every step of the way the next leg of your journey will come with challenges but i
007don't doubt for a moment that you will be able to meet those challenges head on you have established and applied a pattern of good habits those good habits and those practices will prepare you for success in whatever lies ahead and i know some of you are sitting there saying who is this guy superintendent i heard of him i don't know who he is so i'm the superintendent my job is i'm the guy that closed the school when it snows and then some of you tweet at me or get messaged me on instagram that i made a terrible decision or that if there's a half an inch of ice on the ground we should close school for the week that's me that's my job that's what i do so for those of you who've never seen
008me i apologize i started in july 2019 i got to the high school a few times and then the world shut down so this is our first event together in addition to all of the academic success that we honor tonight we are also celebrating those students who applied for and are recipients of various local scholarships these scholarships are given out each year by various local organizations and community members typically scholarship night would be a separate night and each of the varying groups would be here to speak say a few words and give you your award obviously we were not able to do that this year so while the students will still receive scholarships you don't have to sit through the speeches except for mine because i have the microphone and i also have a superintendent
009scholarship that i am very very proud tonight to award to six very worthy students the danny robert jose superintendent scholarship fund was created in 2013 in memory of my parents who taught me the values of hard work and good character i lost my mother when i was 18 years old i lost my father when i was 19 years old but those values they instilled in me helped me be the man i am today in previous years the scholarship fund has given out between eight to sixteen thousand dollars to students but this past year due to the pandemic the typical fundraising events and the dinners that we would do were not held so working closely with my scholarship chairperson miss jen algieri yeah you could give a round of applause to mrs algieri she's amazing this
010year all we could do was write letters and ask for donations and that's really not the best way to go about raising funds so needless to say we didn't raise the same amount of money we have in previous years and i mentioned this at a board of education meeting and i was taken aback when one of our own board of education members reached out to me and committed a four thousand dollar donation to the superintendent scholarship fund and she's not going to be happy but i must publicly recognize the beltran families charitable fund and commissioner dana beltran thank you so much for that unexpected and extremely generous donation and thank you to all who have donated in their own ways you're making a difference in the lives of students so almost done this year we
