The purpose of this hearing is to keep the public and school board fully informed as to whether the district is using sound
policies and practices that meet the needs of students and warrant public confidence in the district's operation. State statute requires that the public be given the opportunity to provide input to the adoption of the instructional and digital materials. Are there any public speakers? No registered speakers. Doctor Hepburn will now give a brief overview of the instructional and digital materials recommended for adoption in 2026 2027. Thank you, MADAM Chair. Good evening. I'm I'm pleased to submit the instructional and digital materials plan recommended for the k through 12 World Languages Adoption in 2026 2027 for the School Board's consideration and adoption. Florida Statute 1,006.40 requires public access to the recommended instructional and digital materials and a school board hearing to receive public comment. Broward County Public Schools has the duty and responsibility to provide instructional and digital materials
to support instruction. The materials selected must be aligned with the academic standards and reflect the most current information each year. Based on the state's adoption cycle, district staff and teachers review instructional and digital materials for designated designated subjects and select the best suited materials for use. The subject area reviewed rotates each year, allowing the district to supply students and teachers with current materials. The selected adopted materials are generally used for five years for the 2026 2027 school year, the designated subject area for review was World Languages for k through 12. As the educational landscape continues to evolve, digital content plays an increasingly important role in teaching and learning. This is true of instructional and digital materials as well. Each recommended title includes digital components and interactive features to support student engagement and instructional delivery. Now,
district staff from Innovative Innovative Learning will provide a brief presentation of the recommended instructional and digital material for the k through 12 world languages. Adoption for the 2026 2027 school year. Following the presentation, staff will be available to answer any questions. I'll turn it over to staff. Thank you. Good evening, Doctor Wilson, director of Innovative Learning. Presentation. Okay. This evening we will be going through the public hearing for the instructional materials and world languages adoption. Again, the rationale for this particular engagement is to ensure that we are in compliance with state statute as it relates to the selection of our process for public for materials, for our students. In addition, we are showing you the recommended selections from our instructional review committee, as they think that these are the tools that are adequate and most
aligned for our students. According to Florida State Statute 7004, we do have adequate instructional materials defined, making sure that we have a submission, a sufficient amount of materials and site licenses for our students. This definition was expanded in the last couple of years where this could look like bound or unbound kit package, hardback or softback materials, along with electronic content and consumable consumables. This allows us to have flexibility with purchasing to ensure that we are being as fiscally lean as possible, and our selection process. Additionally, to ensure that we have a transparent process to ensure that all of the feedback from our committee is viewable and also accessible, we use the editor credible tool. This is an electronic system that allows us to glean all of the professional in depth shifts within our materials. Also,
it gives us the opportunity to make sure that we are reviewing the high quality content aligned to state standards, and also making sure we are in alignment with it. Technical requirements. Again, this is also in accordance with state statute to have a clear and transparent process for instructional materials. Additionally, the Department of Innovative Learning will place all district order for schools. Based on the current enrollment. We make sure that we go back and work with our aligned departments to ensure that we have numbers that are not inflated, and that we do order for the cases of damaged or lost materials, but there is not anything that is purchased in excess. Again, based on board approval, the world language order can then be placed in the state queue for processing after the 31 day protest period.
You will see on the next slide all of the items by category that we will be purchasing for this year and the cost of the adoption along with the vendor. Again, we have worked very closely with our appropriate departments that manage world languages and their subject matter experts to ensure that we are selecting, number one, the highest quality of materials. Number two, making sure that they are statutorily aligned. And then, of course, in addition, that we are not being fiscally irresponsible in these lean times so that we are in compliance with Florida Statute 7004. Again, as you see through the remainder of the slide deck, all of the other upper level instructional materials that we will be using for world languages, which will be inclusive of our Ace and ib courses. Again, these are the
most sound prices that we were able to have in conjunction with our vendors, and also making sure we were fulfilling all of the needs of our students with an emphasis on pricing for digital content so that we are not being overexcessive in making sure that we are going into our digital age with, with our materials. And that would be the conclusion of the review of our instructional materials for world lananages. Pleasee notee that in the appppdidis,s, weanan soso h hee access to all of the materials in detail by clicking on the appendix items to actually have an in-depth review of the materials and reviewing those page by page. Thank you. Thank you. We'll go to board discussion. Any board discussion on this item? MISS Bulman. Thank you for all your hard work doing this and
putting this together. I had one question. We are required to purchase textbooks periodically. Or do we receive funding for this? Or is this. How does that work. In the. Through the chair in the past, we did have state categoricals for instructional materials, which is no longer the case right now. So we have to basically work in conjunction with the cfo to make sure that we are budgeting for instructional materials based on the current enrollment. So that's something that we work in collaboration with the cao, the department that is up for their adoption cycle to ensure that we have that plan in the budget, but. We're required to adopt new tech. That is correct every. Year not being funded specifically for this, but we're being required to. Yeah, every five years. Okay. Thank you and thank
you. I really appreciate the presentation. Thank you. DR. Zeman Chair, do you know if this is paid out of just to confirm, this is paid out of our general fund, out of operating funds? That's correct. And are any of these contracts executing so that those operational funds that are being used are school year 2526 funds? Are we buying these books with this year's money? No, no. No, we are not. Thank you. Thank you. Any other board member discussion? All right. All in favor of item one, say aye. Aye. All opposed? Say no. Item passes unanimously the scheduled order of business for this public hearing of the School Board of Broward County, Florida, has been completed. Seeing no objections, I will now adjourn this public hearing.
