002b w or the L of the free and the home of the please be seated at this time I'd like to introduce Matthew kavanau senior class president to deliver the class of 20124 [Applause] address hey Mom I see you I was told I'll be sleeping outside if I didn't give her a shout out all right I think I can start now hello and good evening to friends relatives parents and CCT Tech staff we all here sitting in the very very hot sun for the next two hours for one reason the class of 2024 my name is Matthew cavel known as Mr press by many especially by Marco bruy sitting right over there I could stand up here today and talk about my own experiences and accomplishments at CCT Tech but I want to switch it
003up as our senior class vice president Michael nardelli and I promised during our campaign last year we are for the people so in creating this speech I spoke to my classmates and heard your stories for the next few minutes I want to share your words your accomplishments and your memories because you are the people who really mattered today C of 2024 during freshman year we started in quite the odd fashion we would go to school two days a week and our teachers had to find ways to engage us under these crazy circumstances luckily according to our senior class we have many teachers who are great at that our Star Quarterback Brook Joselyn says Mr Sharp is one of the girls and is up to date with all the tea and we all will never forget
004our Kilt wearing apling teacher Mr Campbell our senior class sergeant of arms kathlyn lamb shared that Mr Campbell's humor is unmatched and is constant care for his students is admirable Mr Campbell was able to make something as stressful as AP Lang pretty enjoyable don't tell him I said that though it'll get to his head and we all appreciate Mr Riggins sing right over there our senior class advisor he planned our Disney trip on top of every other senior event while seeming to wear a different suit every day this is just a small sample of the great things you said about your academic teachers they have made a memorable impact on all of us we could also talk for hours about the counselors administrators and staff who hel help endlessly with college applications and personal crises
005thank you Mrs hickey and the reason we all chose Tech was because of our programs if I don't mention Mr Ziller and Mrs Shaw they might never speak to me again without taking environmental sustainability FR sophomore year I wouldn't have the passion for the field so thank you for guiding me down my career path next year I plan on going to Virginia Tech while majoring in chemical engineering class of 2024 you also told me about your future plans in a few short months we will be spread out across the world some of you will be moving into dorms some will be working some will be serving our country in the military and some will be taking a gap year to explore and travel for example Michaela is entering the Army Edward Thurman is going to
006Princeton and Tristan Gribble already has a job lined up with diamond materials this this might be the last time all of us are sitting here together whether that makes you happy sad or you have mixed feelings about the future I think we can all agree these past four years have had an impact on who we are in the journey we are about to embark on it is the impact of the tech experience that's provided us with skills confidence and connections for life but we also had fun before we leave I would like to share some of those memories like Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls in '96 and 97 we are the only class to win in back-to-back years for the Powderpuff also we will never forget Mr CCT Tech especially big pinkles performance [Applause]
007and or the music cutting out on Brendon Martinez and him still killing it so many of us including Crystal Peko Trevor Donnelly and Jacob butcher will remember the CC Tech Deo and Parker Phillips will remember will never forget when he lost a battle to a punching bag at the same event yeah how's how's that RF it was the battle for for world domination in model un that will remain a favorite memory for Liliana delvicario Han and the rest of the model Congress Club Kristen Cornell earned money and experience working at Mor's over the summer and I know and I know that Mandy Benitas will always remember throwing a going away concert in the bathroom for Kyle Gilson who was going to miss the last day of sophomore year and speaking of bathrooms all of us
008guys will always remember Trucking through the school just to find an unlocked one this year thank you underclassman as we move toward the end of this speech and also our high school experience my goal is for you to not remember my words today but our memories are for the past four years I want you to remember going not leaving I know everyone has pretty early dinner reservations tonight so I'm going to wrap this up now to end this off I want to thank every single one of you for the past four years of my life you guys have given me something that I will truly cherish forever until we meet again for our reunion so long to the teachers staff students and CCT Tech overall in conclusion and in keeping with the themes of you
009I'm going to end with the wise words of my friend and classmate Browski she shares that I had the best of times the worst of times Amazing Friends terrible friends good love bad love and so much more I gained a big sense of self and traits that will always be with me forever High School is confusing perplexing and downright hard but I couldn't be prouder of these 252 seniors sitting in front of me the accomplishments this class will make in their profession will improve our world for years to come and I truly believe that with every fiber of myself class of 2024 we finally made it [Applause] thank you Matthew I would now like to introduce our keynote speaker sha McDonald is a multifaceted individual whose journey is marked by determination versatility and a commitment
010to personal and professional growth graduating from oakrest high school Sean carved out a path that led him through very ious Fields with unwavering dedication Shawn went on to compete as a student athlete at both the University of Tennessee and Old Dominion University where he not only excelled in his studies but also demonstrated exceptional Talent on the sports field this culminated in a remarkable stin as a professional baseball player with the Chicago Cubs organization where Shan honed his skills and embrac the challenges of elite level competition transitioning from the world of professional sports he earned a bachelor's degree from Stockton University he then earned a master of business administration degree of Ruckers University while simultaneously embarking on an apprenticeship with the United Brotherhood of Carpenters Local 623 immersing himself in the art and craft of carpentry
011armed with a diverse skill set and a wealth of experience Sean spent 15 years in the commercial carpentry industry honing his craft and contributing to numerous constru struction projects with precision and expertise however recognizing the call for a new challenge he embraced the transition into the realm of Education currently serving as our construction trades instructor at CCT Tech Sean brings a wealth of firstand experience and practical knowledge to the classroom shaping the next generation of skilled Professionals in the construction industry his journey stands as a testament to the power of perseverance continuous learning and the pursuit of Excellence across multiple domains it gives me great pleasure to introduce our keynote speaker Mr Sha mcdonal [Applause] thank you Mr mcra and thank you Dr rossie for agreeing to let me address this to class your trust
012in me and all of our instructors is shown every day throughout CCT Tech Dr Rossy Mr mcra and all of our Administration work closely with us to bring forth curriculums and environments that truly reflect the actual workplace yes this does make our jobs as instructors more challenging takes extra time but through all of this we're able to provide students with that extra leg up that little bit of an edge so that when they leave here success is within Arms Reach and not out on the horizon the students here whether they realize it or not have been provided with an education that kicks the gluteus maximus I can't say what uh we would say on a job site but uh you got a badass education here thank you to all the family members members here tonight
013job well done you see most Journeys we go through in life are not solo Endeavors the journey these young men and women have just completed could not have been possible without your help family friends and faith will be needed as many more Journeys again tonight you did good but continue to do good my life so far has been taking me down many paths some smooth some bumpy uphill downhill dead ends I have been fortunate to wear many hats throughout the different stages of my life I could spend many an hour up here talking about who I played against A-Rod that gentleman you said Michael in the the speech right before me when Michael decided to try baseball even in the time we made will the thrill Clark in the backseat of a car even though
014he was the reigning nlm could even talk about the time my carpentry crew hopped in an elevator in Atlantic City and went face to face with Beyonce and her crew heading up for an opening night performance to say that her crew was shocked and so was my crew is an understatement storytelling the oldest form of Education after Mr mcgr asked if I would address these graduates I started thinking about other commencement speeches and some common themes I thought about my stories and my learning experiences transitioning from player to coach is way harder than most people think much like my transition from Carpenter to instructor was challenging as well your transition from high school student to college student to trades person to entrepreneur to those very special members of this graduating class who will be joining
015the military ranks we thank you all right there to formalities now here comes the good stuff we're gonna get at it I've decided to treat this speech like a halftime talk no matter which sport we play coaches have been using a very effective means of delivering both positive and negative criticism athletes we call this the praise sandwich so here's how it goes first I'm going to provide you with some positive reinforcement make you feel good going to soften you up for what's next to constructive criticism and then we're going to finish it off with some more positive reinforcement but before I start I see that you you hopefully you notice I'm wearing a baseball hat my very first one in the Chicago Cubs organization when I played for the Dayton in the Cubs I'm also
016wearing my gown from Ruckers University I wear these for two reasons thank you the first I earned it many hours many sacrifices but many many Smiles just like you have earned the one you wearing tonight many hours many sacrifices many many smiles and second you sweat I sweat my crew my team if my team is training then I'm training if my crew is working then I'm working all for one and one for all I know our uh English teachers probably recognize that as being from the three uh um Three Musketeers right although I believe Shakespeare said it first so a little under 1400 Year sorry that's a long time ago a little under, 1400 days ago you first walked into this building as freshman can you remember it you can a little bit I know
017us the instructors and teachers here in administration remembered quite well our world was flipped upside down due to covid-19 you saw new faces new teachers everything seemed huge fast forward four years went pretty quick didn't it feels a lot smaller now feels way more comfortable CCT Tech feels like that second home for you you've come a long way but there's a long way to go just look at all of you have look at all that you have accomplished here at CCT Tech so many skills USA Awards so many host of medals so many high school sports championships we have people are in the in the 100 hit club we have a Discover Channel national award winner we have so many scholarships that we given out through throughout every single program the list goes on and
018on and I see you back there strive I didn't forget you look at all the special Olympic medals you have won and all those cool things we got to build all those really cool things we build in the shops you they know it we built some really cool stuff thank you this graduating class of 20 24 is so special but in baseball we have a saying Prospect to suspect overnight your accomplishment accomplishments are awesome but there is more to come I can feel it and I know you can feel it but the new Journey awaits the new goals the new desires the new accomplishments but there's always someone coming to take your place I had the great privilege of having Jimmy peaw as a coach while playing in the Chicago Cubs organization if you're unfamiliar
019with jimmmy peaw please do yourself a favor and learn about his life fear strikes out is a book and movie documenting his life you can grab his book as well it's called the truth hurts Jimmy used this phrase so often I learned very quickly that if I wanted to hear the truth you go to Jimmy he had no problem telling you exactly as he sees it so here's my tribute to Jimmy and to you and a little bit of Truth Hurts especially for you and it's time for me to change my hat in construction trades we have a saying I have it written on my hat right here it says dyj or DCM everybody get that all right do your job or don't come Monday simple phrase but packed with meaning do your job the
020success of any team crew club or organization relies on everyone and I mean everyone doing the tasks assigned to them doing their job if you're heading off to college or trade school go to class get there on time do your job your class syllabus will have deadlines they are not suggestions hand you're working on time do your job my baseball coach in college Pat McMahon used to say on time is late my wife also a teacher and way way better than I am says to her students the plane is going to leave if you're late they will not wait for you get to class manage your time wisely do your job I heard Carl Bass CEO of AAS on a podcast and he said you never make a dent by sitting in the back of
021the room you never make a dent by sitting in the back of the room so get to the front show your face do your job for those heading into the trades do your job if you weren't sure then just ask don't be afraid to ask questions do not be afraid to fail and don't forget to work it's not about working the other person it's about outworking yourself do your job make mistakes but remember to clean them up be on time if the job starts at 7 don't roll in at 7 with a cup of coffee in your hand 7 o'clock means work begins at 7 drink your coffee in the car and show up early be prepared for anything that might happen that will delay you work until the stop time not 10 minutes before
022not five minutes before we have a saying in the trades eight for eight you work eight hours you get paid for eight hours don't get lazy on me put the phones away do your job changing hat again all right back to the happy all right Bruce Springsteen had a very intriguing line in his song growing up he wrote when they said sit down I stood up the rebellious spirit I guess every generation has their form of rebellion throughout history each generation has used Rebellion to adjust to overcome to advance to get better your generation is unique your generation is different from my generation is it the Greek philosopher Socrates said and this is 400 BC the children now love luxury they have Bad Manners contempt for Authority they show disrespect for elders and love chatter
023in the place of exercise children are now tyrants not the Servants of their households they no longer rise when Elders enter the room they contradict their parents chatter before company gobble up anties at the table cross their legs and Tyran tyrannize their teachers I don't know if that's gen Z or my generation Gen X kind of sounds like all of us doesn't it so how much have we really changed but what you do the things you do are amazing you see the world through a lens that is much different than previous generations and this bothers some people and let's face it some people do not want to accept your unique way of thinking please don't be discouraged I believe what you are bringing to this world is a much needed fresh face a fresh Co
024to paint and if something that you truly believe in please keep doing it when they say sit down you stand up find your passion find your path find your course and hold strong if you ever had the fortune some call it a misfortune of visiting the construction trade shop you'll know that our playlists are all over the place as the gra l the great Lyricist it's not a about you this time Mr Campbell but um but Vanilla Ice once said you got to get in where you fit in find you be you and love you when they say sit down you stand up go go places go on a new adventures go live your best life do do good in this world move our bodies are meant to be in motion get moving help help
