0022021 address [Applause] [Music] hello my name is michael green jr from the information technology program i am the 2021 senior class president it's been an honor to have been selected to represent the student body and it is my pleasure to welcome the graduates families and faculty to this event the class of 2021 is graduation from cctech every one of you has made an impact on the graduates who sit here today and i have no doubt that we all stickle and emotional struggles of the pain to our personal obstacles and navigating relationships with our family and friends it's even figuring out how to handle a new virtual broker and it's important in a very real future the need for us to let out a collective cry crept up more often than any would otherwise like to

admit but every step of the way we're able to pick ourselves up and persevere because of all of you on behalf of the class of 2021 i'd like to thank you all for your attendance but more importantly your continued support high school is a long winding road and the class of 2021 cannot tell you how much we appreciate having you help navigating that difficult path a little over four years ago this class our parents and our guardians visited cctech in front of us stood a shiny new school with only 200 students in attendance in essence it was a blank canvas ready for us the next group of teenagers to brush their own unique swaths of color but with the excitement of a fresh and new experience came the fear that we weren't exactly what we

were gonna get when we came here but i think we've taught ourselves the answer to that question in our time at tech through four years of hard work and thinking outside of the box even at times when that long riding road seemed to circle back on itself again and again we've learned that life's not only about the destination many times it's about the journey and more importantly how to adapt to sudden changes that lesson combined with knowing that we wanted to make our journey our blank canvas the best it could be this resulted in what you all see before you hear today a group of young people who are confident creative mature and willing to try to take on life's challenges with a little more humility than most but don't get me wrong it's not

always all business we've had a lot of fun over these four years too and we've made some great memories from our freshman meet and greet to winter formals and spring dances to our food truck to prom we're fortunate to have laughed with one another as often as we have and i can't forget our most successful event the powderpuff football game which i'm sure lots of you attended this created memories we will carry with us for life we've set the tone for fun events and i hope that the classes after us are able to forever improve upon what we've done thus far but the elephant in the room is the pandemic as pandemoniums swept across the world this year no can have ever expected our lives to be shaken up as they as much as they

were by vaccines mass mandates social distancing and even virtual learning the list goes on but regardless of how you feel about any of it it's something that impacted all of our lives but where many people tend to focus on the negative aspects of the pandemic i want to end with my take on it that many ways and maybe even paradoxically in a world of social dissonance it brought all of us closer together despite these difficulties throughout the year we were able to continue to make our school as vibrant and as lively as we had before students faculty and administration continue to keep a smile on their faces smiles so large that yes you could even see them through the masks let's remember that as we all finally get together here to celebrate our class the

class of 2021 no matter how you feel about the social aspects of the pandemic we're all here together celebrating the way we were meant to as one community and my classmates class of 2021 to direct you directly you're composed the most resilient highly capable and incredible people i've ever had the pleasure of meeting i know sometimes will be hard and difficult to stay focused and retain the motivation to pursue the things that you love but the resilience we've all learned throughout the last year is probably the most important ingredient to our success so never forget who we are and what we've accomplished together when those times of doubt creep in when the goal seems too difficult to reach think back on these times where we all journey together to remind yourself that as long as

you follow your own winding path and enjoy the process your end result will be no different than the one we're all here sharing at this moment thank you all for your time [Applause] [Music] thank you michael at this time i'd like to introduce our next speaker mr scarpa is a true pioneer in the communications field he was a co-founder president and chief operating officer of american cellular network corporation the first publicly traded cellular net company in the united [Music] co-found st wireless communication systems and was one of the original members of the nationwide cellular one network an entrepreneur in the broadcast industry he helped to establish the new jersey and northeast cable tv associations and assisted in the launch of the internet service provider earthlink through the john f scarpa foundation he supports education healthcare

and disadvantaged families including the frank and edith scarpa regional cancer center at inspire medical center in vineland the edith viveretto scarpa arts and sciences building at st augustine prep and of course the john f scarpa technical education center of cumberland county he is also a major donor to the higher education institutions including stockton university where he gave the largest donation in the school's history in 2020 and villanova university where john f scarpa hall is home to the widget school of law and the john f scarpa center for entrepreneurship and law which serves as a hub to cultivating an entrepreneurship mindset in the study of law and other disciplines across villanova campus to deliver the career and technical address i would like to invite john f scarpa to the podium [Applause] good good evening to all

and uh students and graduates uh please remain seated mostly people stand up when i come up to speak but you get special dispensation today but thank you county commissioner chairman dorella and fellow committee board of vocational education chairman ruth hans and board members superintendent dr tina rossi faculty staff most important the class of 2021. i'm here today for two primary reasons one to congratulate you on your achievements in becoming part of the graduating class at the cumberland county technical education center known to me as the john f scarpa technical education center of cumberland county which i will refer to from time to time as skarpa tech second is to help you look into the future see what challenges may lay ahead and help you to navigate your journey let's start with number one this class

of 2021 is already unique as each of you found a way to continue with your studies amidst a world pandemic the coronavirus which was mentioned earlier your education remained a primary concern for you your perseverance fortitude to stay focused identify your passions remain committed and complete your studies here will serve you well into your future in the end you benefited from the overwhelming educational opportunities you received [Music] at cctech looking back you were truly part of a privileged few who realized a positive outcome during an extremely trying time for you your family community and the world at large the stellar education that you received here over the past four years will be a solid foundation for you to build upon and make your future all it can be but how you realize and utilize the

foundation that this very special place afforded to you is now up to you when i became the main benefactor to this school that bears my name in in 2016 i had a vision where i saw a chance to provide an extraordinary education to young students in this community this educational opportunity would provide students with a choice of pursuing a career in one of two ways either as a graduate of a skilled vo-tech program or on an academic track either route would provide a pathway for each of you to become skilled workers and professionals needed for tomorrow's world you are our future and this committee this community needs you to succeed at what you choose to do like many of you i came from very humble roots right here in cumberland county vineland my father passed

when i was just about five which left my mom with five children a farm and a business to run we learn how to work as a team have respect and build endurance and fortitude we were taught to appreciate what we had and to work hard if we wanted or needed more and most important always remember to show respect for others your family and give back to your communities these core values of teamwork respect for others building endurance fortitude gratitude charity to others and appreciation for what we are given it is also what this very special place cc tech is built upon and so you have been given a gift upon which to launch your journey in life secondly look to the future tomorrow starts today tomorrow starts right now dream big a very well-known american

author mark twain said the two most important days in your life are obviously the day you are born and the day you find out why each of you thankfully already experienced the first of these two days but the second one the day you find out why you were born will not come suddenly or easily it will require you to have the confidence to pursue your dreams no matter how far reaching they may appear to be at the time in part your confidence will come from the foundation that you built here and your continued pursuit of a solid education know this without education you lack knowledge without knowledge you lack confidence without confidence you lack success this foundation will give you the opportunity to stand firm persevere even in the face of failing and most important

continue to dream big richard branson expressed it well if your dreams don't scare you they are too small as i grew so did my curiosity about science and how technology helped us to learn and communicate the curiosity i had led me to my passion and my dreams exploded exponentially i was not well funded or well connected but i was willing to work harder than most others and most of all i believed in what i could do and i believe in you also i know today's world is very different from the one that i knew when i was your age but some things remain the same as ralph waldo evanson wrote in the eighteen hundreds to be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment i want

to say that again to be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment recently i committed to sponsoring and giving birth to a program at villanova university's charles widger school of law the john f scarpa center for law and entrepreneurship this transformational program is launching a new and exciting phase of innovation initiatives within the law school and across the entire university and as john ratzenberger will tell you in a few minutes it's the entrepreneurial spirit that's driven the economic success of this great nation i'm encouraging each of you today to step up to the plea tackle the challenges in front of you with bold solutions your journey is just beginning stay open be alert look around each corner and find your passion look for innovative ideas

to make this world and this community a better place and one day to give back to your community and your families so remember it's all up to you i hope you allow your curiosity to give birth to your dreams and pursue them with a relentless perseverance [Music] bet on yourself and you will be amazed at what you can accomplish in closing remember what dr seuss said don't cry because it's over smile because it happened thank you and god bless america [Applause] thank you mr scarpa it gives me great pleasure to introduce our keynote speaker during more than three decades of movie making and theater john ratzenberger has enjoyed successes through his roles on cheers superman and every pixar film to date he's also an accomplished author entrepreneur and philanthropist his message is that the american

none of this is none of this would have happened if we're not for him now i you know i think it was mentioned you know my dad was a truck driver my mother worked at a factory but i had the advantage of growing up in a uh factory town bridgeport connecticut and we made everything there we made even the the little bald chain thing that turns the lights on that's we made that we made uh two dime machines uh tanks it was known as the arsenal of democracy you know during world war ii because we made everything just the way it was the point i'm trying to make is that everybody i knew growing up had some skill they were capable people that could do things like we never had a repair man come to

the house if my father couldn't do it or an uncle or myself one of the neighbors knew how to figure it out and that's just the way we grew up and again you know back in the 50s and 60s it was different because we didn't have uh parents hovering over us all the time you know the helicopter parents you know telling you how to do things a matter of fact it was just the opposite on saturday if you were in the house they'd say what are you doing in the house get out of here and you just had to be home before the street lights went on that was it that was the rule so in a way it was a training ground for being an entrepreneur because you had to figure it out yourself

you didn't have parents driving you to karate practice or anything like that just get out of the house don't bother me and be home before the street lights go on i imagine a lot of the parents recognize that they'll say get out of here so we did so and what do we do we rode on our bicycles we might be five ten miles away from home and a chain breaks on the bicycle what do you do we had no cell phones believe it or not i know it's hard for your kids to believe there's no cell phones even if we had cell phones we didn't know our numbers who knows your home number so you had to fix your own bike or figure out a way to get it home because the bikes pretty much

is what we built ourselves out of scrap parts so if a bike broke down we didn't just throw it away and go to kmart or walmart and get a brand new bike it just didn't exist so we had to do it ourselves so at a very young age we were using tools now even though later on i went into college got a degree in english uh but even my literary heroes was the uh like james fennimore cooper the author wrote the last of mohegans the deer slayer uh but it was all about people the pioneers who just looked at a forest and went in there by themselves for miles and miles and miles and they made a path for the rest of us they didn't have compasses they didn't know anybody they just figured it

out as they went along and i think that really affected me because when i came of age i went over to england's for a week i thought i ended up staying 10 years and that's where i started my career but one of the reasons i was able to sustain myself is because i was a carpenter and that's the important thing if you take anything else away make sure you have a skill that you own that belongs to you when i was 14 after building things with my friends and tree houses and those racing cars you get a long piece of wood from a building site we borrowed it and and we'll give it back one day we'll get it back to them and you know they take the wheels off of baby carriages and we'd

race them down the hill and that way when you work with your hands you learn common sense like the first thing that i learned building those racing cars going down a hill is make sure you have a good braking system which eventually i figured that out but i remember one day i had a friend of mine spray a bunch of lighter fluid on the back of my cart and set a match to it just as i went down the hill because i wanted to look like i was a turbo engine in my golf cart well it was a stupid thing to do once again you learned common sense because i ended up under a cement truck and luckily diesel fuel doesn't burn as fast as regular gasoline so i escaped with my life that then

but again common sense you don't you can't you learn common sense for a book or a computer you have to learn using your hands i remember one day just cut the grass and the neighbor across the street frank buchanan anybody here know okay uh he he was working on a tricycle and i said frank what are you doing he had a little daughter a three-year-old daughter cindy and he was put down blocks on the pedals i said frank what are you doing he's well john i'm blocking the pedals so that cindy's feet can reach the the pedals i said oh that's that's great so i'm cutting the grass watching him in he was bragging about how he's what kind of wood he's using i think it was either oak or maple or some other hardwood

and he put a strip of rubber in there and how he re reset the uh the seated the bolts so her shoe wouldn't catch on them and he loved it again everybody was a tinkerer so he's working two three maybe four hours on this and john ritzel who worked down the local shipyard down the end of our dead-end street came wandering by smoking his pipe and he was an older guy and probably probably that he was my age that i am now but an old guy a foggy so he's got his pipe and he stops and he looks at uh frank is frank what are you doing so frank went to the same explanation about putting the blocks on the pedals so cindy's feet can reach it and john takes a puff of his pipe

he looks at frank and says why don't you just lower this seat again common sense and that was the beauty of it that's why i like working with my hands all those years when i was 14 i decided i wanted to learn how to build a house and everything in it and i did and i did and now in my older age i i get a thrill out of making the little doll houses and miniature furniture for my grandkids so it never never never ends even john will tell you that when you know he started the scarpa empire he started with screwdrivers he was installing [Music] cable system so he was getting his hands dirty and that's the beauty of the skills that you have it's so important i see i love this country so

much [Music] and you're the future of this country and it's people who can build things shape things invent things and that's you when i lived over in europe that's when i realized that peace in the world depends on the strength of america i mean if you don't believe me ask that's the marine over there sergeant is it would you agree god bless you sir semper fi now that's who you should talk to and and he'll tell you what a great country this is you can't find opportunities like you have anywhere else in the world i've been traveling the world since i was 18 years old and that's more than a couple of weeks ago over 50 years i've been traveling the world and every time i come back to america i i have to stop

myself from kissing the ground it's even when we were singing the stars mango banner nice job by the way that i i just i had to wipe away a tear and you may not feel it now being your age but this is a special special place and in saying that i would think if if i had the power i would suggest no i would demand that anyone running for a public office whether it's mayor council member governor president they should be required to assemble an ikea coffee table first and if you can't do that you've got no right passing laws that affect me and my family that doesn't show me you have common sense but thank you thank you for attending school here and thank you once again john to just everything you've done you

really make the world a better place and look to him when you think you can't go a step further or the work is too hard think of this man right here he started turning screws and now he's changing the world so thanks again john i really appreciate it now i was going to tell you a story about my apprenticeship as a carpenter but i don't you you don't want to hang around that long do you i mean don't you have a lunch menu at home they got bologna and pressed hams set out for you stuff what's the best italian restaurant in town what is it maplewood all right we'll see you all there later all right thank you god bless america and you thank you thank you mr ratzenberger for joining us this evening and

sharing your time with the class of 2021 [Music] [Applause] so yesterday mr mcgraw invited me to graduation practice and i was fooling around i was complimenting shirts and i was being a little crazy i had cheetah print sneakers on and mr mcgraw was very serious i was trying to have him crack a smile so mr mcgraw i'm going off script [Applause] i'm gonna get in really big trouble but i'm going off script because i want to tell you the story of the logo the box now hold on no all i'm going off scripts [Music] so many years ago when we were planning this beautiful school we had to pick a new logo that represented not only our ideas and our vision but what our students would represent so we had sheets and sheets of different

types of logos and we finally arrived on the one that adorns everything tech now you know it's an imperfect box now we are all imperfect boxes there is an upward motion of that box but it only works if the other parts are there each box even that one has a foundation so tonight i'd like to introduce you to our foundation when i mention your name please stand up and remain standing these individuals whose efforts perseverance and dedication brought this school to life and gave us our foundation mr ben murray mr daniel viverelli mr carlos floor the past presidents of our board of education [Applause] mrs ruth hans our current president of the cumberland county board of vocational education [Applause] director joseph thrilla and deputy director and retired superintendent of tech darlene barber [Applause] and joining

us here retired assistant principal patricia robbins [Applause] they along with so many others are our foundation but the foundation is just the beginning you are surrounded every day by the other parts of the box beginning with the phenomenal individuals that are seated here on our stage mr greg mcgraw dr caitlin skinner dr sales no they are not standing up [Applause] dr solis nolan mr william briggs and mr dave baezelli [Applause] now stay put my partner in crime down at the other end of the world mrs megan duffield [Applause] the next part of the box you see that crew sitting over there we would be nothing without them so to every teacher instructional aide guidance counselor school nurse please stand up [Applause] [Music] please note the teachers listened the administrators didn't [Music] now the behind the

scenes the work that you don't see but is done day in and day out by individuals who love you as much as your parents the maintenance custodial staff under the direction of mr shane davenport [Applause] the campus safety and security team including canine meadow under the direction of captain andre lopez and to my tech team who's broadcasting making me sound awesome mr al brown and mr ryan steinbronn [Applause] the last part of your box and i want you to take a second and look around this stadium right now and to the moms and dads and grandmoms and grandpas aunts uncles cousins neighbors everyone who complete their boxes stand up [Music] [Applause] [Music] all right class of 2021 wear your box your job take that lid off and soar make sure you come back to us

lean on us remember your foundation and do extraordinary out of the box things but before you do that give this box a round of applause as thanks [Music] now with the box standing because it's because of them i can say the following lines especially because of those people over there it is my privilege to certify that each member of the class of 2021 has met all requirements for graduation as set forth by the new jersey department of education and the cumberland county board of vocational education you did it congratulations class of 2021 [Applause] and you all may be seated now the next gentleman needs no introduction but mr dave bias sally come on [Applause] [Laughter] and he's gonna get your diplomas love you guys [Music] i would like to offer my congratulations to the class
