following areas information technology engineering health science and medicine law enforcement or tv studio broadcasting this graduate has earned a 3.7 overall gpa or higher on behalf of mr scarpa who could not be here with us this evening and before the winner is revealed i would like to take this opportunity to share why this scholarship is awarded and the story of its namesake [Music] growing up in vineland new jersey in the 1940s and 50s john f scarpa was a bright and inquisitive boy curious about how things worked he wanted to understand the basis of things and the systems in which they were applied ultimately his interest would be in communication of sound music the spoken word and how they in proper combination could improve modern society later this would continue beyond john's business success and entrepreneurial
fame enabling him to encourage others to do as he has done create and improve the mechanisms that support our lives it was in my seventh grade science class i've always had an interest in science mr ray our science teacher uh had us build a crystal radio set while i was in school there was a professor he came in and spoke about cable television beginning in the western part of pennsylvania the hills and mountains where people would go stick an antenna on top of a mountain and then run a wire down into town and they had television it always fascinated me in 1982 john saw the bright future of communications in the cellular telephone industry he joined forces with sam aziz and together they launched a publicly traded company called american cellular network amsel john's success
grew and with it his reputation not just for making wise business decisions but for his consideration and generosity john's desire to pay it forward is deeply rooted in his upbringing his mother taught him to give to others to help them achieve their dreams he in turn instilled this belief in others the cornerstone of john's life remains deeply grounded in his family his wife janna his two daughters grandchildren and his siblings well i think without question you know what once once that reputation gets out that you're you're a giver not just a taker um people are going to want to come to you and and do business with you and and get involved with you well i think one of john's main contributions in terms of success in business he connects with people you can't do
good business with good people unless you can connect with it and that you actually comes from they recognize that he cares about him they recognize that he is compassionate they recognize great integrity they can trust him and in in trusting is more emotional than physical and once you develop a trust with john you follow his leads he's very giving of his time from that standpoint and certainly he's demonstrated a high degree of philanthropy in the region here in new jersey he's done a lot of things for various organizations he does so much with philanthropy whether it's the police foundation that he founded among others with uh in palm beach the the entrepreneur ship that that he fostered at villanova and the law school part of his giving is in an area that gives of itself
education john took what he had learned and created and imbued it with the principle that guides his life see what needs to be done and do it i think john because of his background you know his family and vineland just you know working to make a living partner and always had a goal it sort of drove him to be what he ended up being today a wealthy philanthropic entrepreneur that was successful in almost every endeavor but part of the motive was to help his family and make a contribution to vineland where he grew up that let's give these kids a chance they can do it there's some very very bright young men and young women there and i told them when we had the dedication of that scarpa tech i looked at every one of
the students i said your job is to get out of here and my job is to help you find a way to get a scholarship giving other people an opportunity to take their opportunities enhanced by john scarpa's dollars and move on maybe end up being another john scarper somewhere down the road that's why he's an entrepreneur that's why he's a philanthropic he's empathetic he he likes to help other people and through his efforts and through the people that helped him he has continually given back ever since becoming successful but i want to see these kids get an opportunity in their lives it's the only way to break through this thing without education you lack knowledge without knowledge you lack confidence without confidence you lack success bet on yourself and you will accomplish goals that you
did not even know [Applause] it's an honor to be here to speak on behalf of john who regretfully couldn't be heard this evening but promises he'll be here next week to share his thoughts with you in person during your graduation um having known john you know since i was a young child um i just there's one takeaway from that that video that i think really should be imported upon you uh there are a lot of uh accolades and that john has received over the years and and you know he spoke some great words to you but one of the key tenets that you know he taught me and is don't forget where you came from okay he has done wonderful things across this country across actually the world uh but he never forgets his roots
he never forgets the people that helped him get where they are today so i think it's important for each and every one of you as you graduate to remember that that this is you are a wonderful opportunity you've had a tremendous education you've won these wonderful awards and you have great success ahead of you and he would want you to remember that and i'm sure he'll say it next week that let's remember those that brought us here and let's when you enjoy your successes in life you know repay that black back to your community from which you came so congratulations to all of you and tonight as you heard his vision is to help each one of you go forward this year's recipient of the john f s carpet legacy scholarship has certainly been hard

[Music] so we have fabulous students it's a 50-50 split you all as their family contribute to their success here this evening and thank you for that the other 50 percent are phenomenal teachers support staff that day in and day out get to interact with these superstars in the class of 2021 and all the other classes here at tech each year we have the phenomenal task of selecting one of those rock star teachers to honor here as our teacher of the year so it is my distinct pleasure to talk a little bit about our 2021 teacher of the year with her lengthy and dedicated career as a registered nurse this teacher of the year has industry knowledge and a true passion for health care to her students she implements innovative and engaging methods in her classroom
that allows students to enjoy their activities display mastery of content and grow confident in their choice of career pathway always approaching everyone with a kind heart and an open mind she forges strong interpersonal relationships with students and staff that not only allow for a more productive learning environment but provide an example of how we should all act even when we are stressed to the max outside of the classroom she is the hosa advisor for skarpatek hosa is the international career and technical student organization for our future healthcare professionals she plans organizes and successfully hosts each year the annual hosa southern regional leadership conference this event brings hundreds of students from schools all over our state to compete and her work with hosa has helped place scarpa tech at the center of this all-important competition more
importantly her work with the students of hosa has helped produce countless awards medals and yes national champions yet for her teaching a full school day and serving as an advisor just aren't enough whenever tech hosts school-wide events it is with a hundred percent certainty that she will be in attendance sometimes not only is she in attendance but she's an active participant such as the time she danced on the stage is danny zuko from greece for the lip sync battle or her very short-lived career as a professional athlete during the staff basketball game other times she attends events just so she can support her students and cheer them on her enthusiasm and wit bring a lot of fun to tech events and i think it's fair to say that her attitude has added to our school
