powerpoint and i'm coming to your house um let's see if we leave anyway i'll take a moment my name is lisa bell and i'm the new education coordinator for georgia power in burke county and i know y'all are used to having miss teresa cobb born and raised here but um she has been so kind and so gracious to allow me to have her favorite county and i've actually already had the opportunity to work at lakeview elementary over the summer doing a summer camp so that's not me wrong sir my i am a retired educator of 30 years i taught in dublin city schools i am gifted and esol and math certified elementary and middle school okay here at georgia power we make move and sell electricity so you're saying why do i need an educator

well georgia power learning power program is a statewide stem initiative and we began in 2011 so we're celebrating our 10th year and we start pre-k through high school which you'll see in your brochures everything we do is standards-based so it actually helps the educators it improves academic achievement in stem education we develop awareness of careers in power and utility industries and that's our big push because we want to prepare our students to be future workforce ready so since the 2011 program we have reached over 800 000 students in the state of georgia and you're going well okay what's that got to do with burnt county well burke county's blakely elementary school had the most learning power visits of any school in the state of georgia there were 48 visits over the past 10 years so

that just tells you that miss cobb not only loves home but she has a really good inn i can't go anywhere so that said i want to continue the relationship that she has developed with burke county and i'm hoping to get your permission to continue to work with your schools your teachers and your students to help the students of burke county so i already covered that how to schedule well i'm going to leave some business cards with kelly i'm sorry i should hand you those earlier um and she can pass it out to the principals along with brochures and you can also reach me at my email address or on learningpower.org so if you have any questions feel free to reach out to me if you have any comments or concerns do so as well

and i look forward to continuing this wonderful relationship i would appreciate it okay i don't think anybody's got a problem thank you all so much thank you for coming thank you next on the new bethlehem community center number one i'm not sure we former administrator here in port county uh this is ms sheridan great um gladys but sheridan reached out to me number one i want to thank y'all for inviting me board president board members and dr williams thank you so much for inviting inviting us but what we what we're looking at is that we know this violence everywhere as violence in the streets it's violence in schools violence and homes and what we've done with through new bethlehem um community center is that we have a program that that's really directed toward shaving down

or eliminating especially eliminating some of the violence that's happening in schools and in communities and what we're looking for is to get approval to partner with both burke county schools and the sheriff's department in order to help with some of those things the program that we want to introduce tonight is is called the um this drive program and it's for students and teachers receiving information for violence and elimination of violence in the communities and again this program it can only help and one go down the uh it's a 36 month program and each year we allocated like 333 333 a year to fund it so we're not going to be asking burke county to or even the sheriff's department to give us funding for the program and what what is geared for is to is

really geared for about 1200 students and about 90 teachers and what we're going to do is is that we're going to get people into the program so that they can recognize some of those signs that's in the classrooms that might be able to to prevent anything serious from happening in schools again it's about 1200 students and 90 teachers again we know what the violence is are out there a lot of things going on and we want to just try to help the way that i got involved i was reached out to and say well you know what about bert county with this kind of stuff and believe it or not burke county has always been my heart you know because i i spent a lot of years here and i know what's needed here in

the pro in the in this community and again i just want to introduce this program and hope that you guys will give us approval so that we can join partnership and cut down on some of the stuff that's going on in the communities um i've passed that agenda to all the board members for you to be able to review and make a decision later and i have michelle and gray glazed who if you have any questions well i do want to hi everyone i'm charlie glaze i'm the executive director at the bethlehem community center in georgia and we currently have a grant with samsa which is substance abuse mental health um administrative services out of virginia so we have a five-year grant it's a million dollars and we do about two thousand dollars a year

two hundred thousand dollars a year um working on educating and preventing mental health and drug abuse services for age group 13 17 and 18-24 so that's what we're currently doing so this is another grant and this grant is through the department of justice and what they want to do is try to curb the violence that's in specifically rural areas so this is why we reached out to burke county although you all are still considered part of the csra so we want to extend our services to the students and the teachers and the sheriff department here in burke county um this one particular grant as mr meetry said is a training and prevention of violence for students and teachers it's a three-year program um and it's about 333 000 a year that will be frequently paid

for by the grant through the department of justice so we won't be asking you all for any funding or anything we just need access to the students and access to the teachers um we we are targeting middle school high school 13 to 18 year olds um and you have information there to say uh when the budget should be submitted and when the proposal needs to be submitted now i do want you all to understand when they notify us that there's a grant available they only give us four to six weeks to have everything ready and submitted to federal government so it's a short turnaround period so we don't have a lot of time to actually contemplate whether whether you are going to be involved i hope you do want to be involved and my staff

and and the better community center will be here to run the whole program um actually mr guitra is going to be our program coordinator for this particular grant so he will be working directly with you all and the schools the middle schools and the high schools here in brick county so if you have any questions for me i'll be happy to [Music] the thing about the program is that it's it's going to be tailored for certain times so again we're not we're not going to put anything out there without the approval we're going to make sure that it's incompatible with the school and the sheriff's department what i'm also looking at is that there's another avenue that we can possibly be looking at and that is like through the court system if there's a kid

that's coming through there and has been into trouble and uh according to the way the policy reads now is that if a kid come out of incarceration they have to go to the alternative school so therefore it's a good time to get them and put them in the program and try to give them some type of retraining if we should say okay will you be training teachers will you go through a professional learning department yeah we will have two programs um the program for the students is called positive action and the program for the teachers is youth mental health first aid and that's a program that teaches teachers how to recognize mental health issues as well as picking up on any type of violence that that particular student has yeah you know over the years

we've got a problem with like the children get some off the white they see or something to come back to school they need counseling then could you help with that too with your program like i said sir we're gonna we can tailor our the program here to whatever the needs are in the workplace so we we're flexible in there so we could make that part of the program specifically you said you're located in augusta right i'm located where would y'all actually serve the kids we will come here we will come here um if there has to be some classes to take place in augusta a small field trip to august it might not be a bad idea and the good part about that is that we're paying for transportation we have transportation in the budget

um for this for the students as well so if we need to transport them to a destiny we have a activity building that we do all of our training in we have an administration building upstairs and downstairs we have a playground and a community garden uh right now where we're located so you have to get parents approval for yeah yes and we would have all of that um parental um consent will have to be done for anyone that's under the age of 17 or under so we will have to have that parents continue to actually have that student participate in the program let me ask you how do you feel i think it's a great program i've met with them and talked with them that meant the father that that support sport um we have

some that we haven't we don't really have anything in place right now that addresses mental health in a comprehensive manner and i think this would be a great issue the first part which is the budget has to be submitted by august 2nd and then the actual proposal has to be submitted by sept i'm sorry august the 16th so we don't have a big time frame um but we wanted to take the opportunity to come here and present it to you all tonight um so that you all can make a decision if not tonight at least by friday so that i can get all of the documentation and everything submitted and keep in mind that this is through the department of justice and they actually want to do more work in the rural communities so that

we can start saving some of our kids from going through that that uh prison system well i don't think you definitely yes mr chair i make a motion that we accept the partnership with the new bethlehem community center with the program scribe mr chair second motion dr secretary well they are going to issue 140 um 1 million grants going to be 62 million grants but that's for larger districts so we stand a good chance we want to make sure that we present a good proposal we want to stress the problems and situations that occur here in burke county um i think we have a good shot at it okay um i can't guarantee anything but let's just take a shot [Music] jones um okay to quickly go over the financial report for early head start

and enrollment our funding enrollment of course is 94. our actual is in 91. you can see the breakdown of the ages um the number on our waiting list currently is 40. the number of transitions currently is 35 into possibly the head start program number of pregnant women is three um our health checks and shots that are up to date is still a work in progress this year um due to transportation and coverage and we're working on that if you go down we have four students with disabilities and we've had several uh staff training activities and parent involvement activities we hope to be able to get back a little bit to normal with those and have our parents back in i kind of missed the fall festivals and stuff from last year but um our income

currently there's been twenty thousand nine hundred forty eight dollars collected so there's ninety five percent left in any consequence um as far as the walmart card this month the total charges you can see in there for a total of one thousand three hundred seventy nine dollars and eleven cents as for the budget up to the year to date spending is at six hundred fifty seven thousand dollars six hundred fifty seven thousand seven hundred thirty three dollars let me get it all out um and the encumbrances for um currently or sixteen thousand six seven forty four hundred sixty two dollars and nine cent and that sixty percent of the budget remains sorry um of course the following pages reflect good purchases are there any questions on those i got all the numbers spit out okay miss

joe all right so um on the next part i would like to postpone the benefits presentation until next month's um meeting due to additional information that i would like to share for clarity and questions okay so um i also included the monitoring review and so this is the summer report um we didn't have any um compliances which was good okay i'm right thing because i read this okay you can't find anything that's a good thing part that i was involved with but there were some ambiguous statements that they did make and i didn't understand how you're going to react to that but um we didn't talk about that okay okay all right so are there any questions before i make a motion that we accept the report from where he had stopped my second emotions

hello um unfortunately we've got out of the five of the school resource officers that we have we've got one that is out on medical leave um we've got sergeant monroe here with us tonight and we've got three that are often trained at our uh state academy in gypsy so they are participating in their 40-hour school resource officer training so that when they're able to come back into the schools this year um they're fully qualified to uh participate in health and growing our youth um so we are we are here this evening to take a quick second from you uh just to introduce two of our new sros that are coming to the team we did lose one to uh changes of career paths um and then the other to a retirement um and so we're

bringing on deputy chris green who is going to be coming with us with an extensive background in the law enforcement profession um deputy green has he's born and raised here he's homegrown here in burke county has graduated through the berk county school system um and has been very eager at transitioning over from the patrol aspect of law enforcement to working with the school system and so has deputy whitfield deputy whitfield is a recent graduate not too terribly long ago a few years ago also homegrown here in burke county community and a graduate of the burke county school system i echo that and say that she's also eager to come over and transition as a school resource officer and i certainly want to take the time to thank each and every one of you all for

the opportunities you've afforded us at the sheriff's office with the school resource officer program and also the partnership that you all have continued to have with us we certainly want to continue as a as an organization as a team as a group um we want to continue this partnership so that we can continue to foster those positive relationships not only with the community outside of the schools but also the students and teachers within the school system and they're very excited to come along with us chris was ready to start necklace he was i before i could they sent out the personnel order um addressing the changes so that the entire agency is aware of the changes and so he called me he said uh kevin norman he said it says we're supposed to start on

sunday are you sure we were supposed to i said you're good you're going to make it in time but you've been selected so he's constantly called and they're both very eager um i've had the opportunity and the occasion to work with both of them throughout their career here at the sheriff's office um they're excellent with children they're excellent with communicating um even even dealing with tough situations um and sometimes we get into those situations where everything is is not so cookie cutter and especially with the um the climate in which law enforcement has now with the community um our greatest thing here that we have on our side is that we don't have those issues here in burke county and and when issues do arise here within the community we're able to sit down at

the roundtable we're able to discuss those issues um so that there's there's fairness and equality on both parts do you know who will be in which schools already we do um and so for training purposes we're going to be making some minor adjustments i've known that some of the principals and some of the teachers have specifically asked for certain um for certain deputies to be back into their schools uh with respects to that we try to make those accommodations but i also have to look at the experience that each deputy brings to the table um the abilities of that of that deputy when he or she is alone in that school without the immediate assistance if there should need to be assistance from other deputies to get to them so we're still working those minor

details out but we're pretty much dead set on on where we're placing everyone but i promise you everybody's going to be good to see you let me ask you just for the information on uh middle school y'all nothing to think so the system that is set in place and we can definitely go into a long discussion about that um there's a there's a thin line between law enforcement conducting those physical searches of the students versus the administrators um conducting those searches of the students at the schools um and it's certainly a thing that we can sit down with administrators and and come up with a plan um to add on to what they have in place already when it comes to conducting those searches of the students whether it's at the middle school the high

school any other schools um even when it comes to some of the vehicles that the students are bringing onto the campus um as well so we certainly will meet in the future on that board no i just want to say captain norman i had the pleasure of teaching both of those young people you did yes so you can echo that as well and you're yeah i can say that you're probably pleased yes ma'am and so it was i certainly wanted them to be here with you all um the sheriff was real big on them being here being present um but it was just unfortunate we had to we knew that tonight was was important but it's also equally as important for them to maintain um we tried to do a zoom meeting and have them

introduce themselves so we didn't get away but it was it was important for them to be in that school and they wouldn't get a chance to go to this school again until next year would be the week after spring break so the scheduling conflicts just didn't work for us um it obviously didn't work in our favor but when i found this class i said you all got to go we've got to push for you to go now we've got everything uh approved um and so this was the only hang up and i said well at the very least we can we show your face and at least provide a small bio with the help of dr hickman and um sergeant monroe we were able to get that taken care of today thank you all right

yeah i'm glad you came tonight good to see you absolutely we definitely want to we'll continue to participate in in these meetings um i know there's a lot of different things that you all may discuss there's sometimes probably some questions that we could probably add an answer to or something of that nature so we certainly want to be continue to part continue to be a part of them we appreciate working with her yes sir okay thank you good evening thank you actually we have cisco [Music] most of you already know but my name is teresa carter i'm the executive director of communities and schools of burke county family connection i'm here to request that you guys sign our mou for fy22 but i wanted to take a different approach as to how i presented our

emoji to you this time because if i wanted to show you the importance of our partnership between family connections cis and the bird county board of education as you know we're a nationally accredited 501 degree non-profit organization and our mission is to surround students with a community of support empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life and i'm not going to read everything we bring to you as executive director 18 years of non-profit experience a bachelor's degree in community health a master's in counseling in psychology and a master's in non-profit leadership and management ms rose brings to you six years of non-profit experience she's a nationally certified cis site coordinator certified team pregnancy prevention facilitator and a certified bobbins lifesteal facilitator 2019 because i didn't get the chance to present to you last

year i want to go back to 2019. waynesboro primary we case managed 46 students 43 were promoted and three were other that's withdrawn transferred or parent removal bert county life center there were 21. we had 15 on track one off track for graduation and five other and with our youth leadership program which is something that we do at our office for the community we have 20 students 14 were promoted these five as you can see graduated and one was our trip and we also provided 50 backpack snacks somewhere for ways for a primary while others were for sga elementary backpack snacks are in partnership with golden harvest food bank where the kids get those on fridays and we also have a resilient teens initiative where we had four students were selected to do that and

that is a trauma informed program with augusta university 2019 in december 2019 our organization applied for burke county to become a get georgia reading community why is that so exciting because in burke county was officially welcomed to get georgia reading in february 2020 and in june of 2020 burke county public schools was able to apply for the l4ga grant and i know that you guys were awarded twice l4ga grant requires that school systems be housed in a get georgia reading community hence showing the importance of our partnership copen 19 hit us and it hit us hard a lot of kids did not have laptops and tablets at home like in that transition so we provided through a grant for from augusta masters and the csra foundation we provided tablets laptops and internet service to several

students in our in our community so that they could complete their coursework we also purchased ppe for the life center because some of the things supplies were on back order so we want to make sure that those um students there were taken care of as well as the teachers we provided funds to several families to assist with food rent clothes and utilities because many parents were about to go without and we did not want any child to go without in 2020 2021 we had to pivot a lot so we didn't have any tutors in-house because it was there were coping restrictions however we were still able to case manage 28 students at sga all were promoted of course burke county life center there were 22 students two were on track ms rose tried to track

down these 13 that were all tracked but some telephones were disconnected some just were unable to get back on track with our youth leadership we had 12 students seven were on track five as you can see here graduated one of them was an undergrad backpack snacks we had 30 ncaa elementary was the target school and we were able to share a few of those snacks with early head start and head start brazilian resilient teens initiative we had five students in september and they all received a hundred dollars from this university that grant and five additional in april of 2021. we also continue to assist families with rent and utility assistance we continue to provide ppe to our community members and we started a burke county literacy team in partnership with our organization sga burke county

library early head start and head start and we were awarded a get georgia reading small grant for read at home in the amount of these are just a few pictures of what we did with those funds we also partnered with the city of waynesboro and walmart so that we could donate and provide these bags so that kids and their parents can read together and and i'm not going to read all this verb you know 20 21 um 20 20 27 why we partner with the burke county sheriff's office because another thing that we do is try to do take back days so we can help them get unused and expired prescription drugs off the street and out of the hands of our children through a grant with the criminal justice coordinating council we have now

been able to provide our bird county middle school amber county high school with life-saving narcan kids and that's if unfortunately someone has an uh opioid overdose they can immediately go to the nurse and grab her go back and save that person's life there has been an incident in another county where a parent came to the school and was waiting on their child and had overdosed so the nurse had to go outside and say they're like with the narcan kid hopefully we'll be able to get those in elementary schools as well this year site for students we provide those vouchers we have those available where a child can get free glasses and a free eye exam we are currently in the middle of our second virtual essential skills count where we are today the kids learned

about um alternate careers so they had someone like chasing goats on the video and the lady was talking about it it was hilarious they loved it we also distributed anti-bullying materials we received that grant um before copenhagen along with dr schubert so we just were able to distribute those materials and we partnered with be clear in georgia because we want the kids opinion on how they think marijuana prevention should be posted on social media also in the upcoming year this goes back to the mou we would love to have case management in sga and the life center again this year especially now that covet has gone down we want to work with other schools providing general youth services is basically the same thing we want to bring back our mentoring program we stopped the mentoring

program because there was so many different mentoring programs popping up and we did not want to duplicate services but we we have been asked to bring that back by several people we want to continue our backpack snack programs we know that the kids are ready to receive lunches but on fridays on the weekend they can open these themselves and throw them in the microwave and have something to eat and we want to be able to provide additional narcan to the schools continue supporting the schools with cypress students and host a youth leadership group that will be ambassadors for our community we also want to host an essential skills camp during the summer of 2022 provide more team resilience activities because a lot of kids are experiencing trauma and myself and ms rose we don't work

nine to five we there is nothing for us to wake up at two o'clock in the morning to a crying child and they're saying i'm hurt i'm in the bathroom somebody's shooting somebody's fighting so this is why it's so important that we partner for these kids we also want to we will be i will be a certified bridges out of party trained facilitator in october of this year so we want to bring a poverty initiative to work county so we can educate our community our schools our community to let them know that poverty goes beyond just being hungry we also want to host a poverty stimulation so that everyone can get a hands-on feel as to how it feels to just be in poverty even if it's for a couple of hours and we want

to continue to provide get georgia reading events and activities throughout burke county because reading is important as an executive director a author and a playwright myself i know it's very important that our students read and not just students in what we say are regular classes we want to reach out to our speed classes as well and there is just so much more but i don't short one time but i'm very passionate about our kids and we will we will be partnering with america group on july 24th for all educators our teachers can come by and participate in our teachers closet we are we are currently collecting donations from the community um different businesses have already donated and they can just drop in and refuel their closets we know a lot of people have back to

school drives and that's for the kids but the teachers themselves um they're gonna need some supplies too and as i was telling um the true citizen this morning a lot of people have a misconception that the board of education has all this money why can't they buy us a flag but it's not like that we grant funding and funding is for specific reasons and that's something that we need to get our community to understand the board can't just go by this and then so that's something that's very important as well and are there any questions [Music] moved that we approve the request as presented i also want to just say this is one of my students from georgia because she claimed oh but it's july so if it's july it must be time to do

insurance bids that we do every year you should have mr jenkins you gotta [Music] oh just a small little make small holes that was the only response we received that's to the general fleet and property and casualty and all that that we get um that was everything known anything yes so that there should be a um a page that shows i've got three three days so from liberty mutual to the lloyds of london [Music] liberty mutual slash lloyd's of london total premium projection is 293 429 so 293 429 dollars liberty mutual lords of london 293 and what is that foreign that is for all of the lines of insurance that that we've bid our commercial property general liability educated liability auto cyber liability all insurance that we have other than working so that's the next

one is emc emc 353 353 seven and then the next one is utica mutual utica utilica mutual 368 809 368 800 so is it the same coverage from all three companies yes and that's it that's it i have that uh [Music] the total last year ms ellison bought me that was 262 so the low bid is 293 so it went up 30 000. and that liberty mutual is who we're with now correct yeah and that's also london too yes 293-429 there's another one for i don't know if it's on there student accident insurance you know we get student we've been doing this for years and years um and they send it in by email so here it is but down at the bottom of that page you will see there you go the projection from

ace chub which is who we've been using it's 000 and then you see those three other bids american specialty aig and right but the low bid was 39 000 and that covers all of our students all the time wherever they are this is something you're right we don't have to do this we just don't want to absolutely absolutely it doesn't cost the students anything and my understanding is it's pretty good i know they use it a lot i don't get a lot of complaints about it so you know if i'm not getting complaints in general it means it's working but and that's your just a little bit 39 000 yes sir yes sir okay someone like the most recently we call this the student accident insurance right no change at all you know i i

keep saying this just so we'll all remember some years ago we went to using the state disciplinary matrix sort of for our code of conduct and we did that in order to keep to make it easier for the folks in the schools to code the various infractions so that our code numbers match up with the state numbers therefore we don't make changes unless the state does and my understanding is the state didn't make any changes to their matrix this year so therefore you know it's the same code of comment you had last year okay y'all content but 21 22. have a second second second cruise all in favor all right 71 last year that should be hard all right oh yes okay thank y'all um we have three items on the um agenda tonight the

first one is the grocery bids and i want to let you all know that we've always had us foods and williams as our two primary grocery bid vendors and u.s foods has decided to pull out of doing any bidding on schools in the whole state of georgia kansas mississippi all over the country so the school nutrition association has actually reached out to secretary vilsack to complain about the fact that they have so there's some school districts around the country that don't have any grocery vendor to bid on them because u.s food's worth their sole vendor so if you look at um i had to touch the grocery bin you'll notice that our only groceries will now come from williams so we're a little bit nervous about that because we always had somebody that could bid

against them and then if one company didn't have it and they couldn't bring it the other person could bring it so it does make us a little bit nervous i feel like i'll be making more trips to sam's next year if we get into buying but the grocery bids are in there for you um all of the paper bids and everything anything that was awarded to the all the different vendors so except for groceries well it's it's a line item thing mr drinking so we don't i just give you all the line i'm so in the past we've said you know what williams won and us foods won well this year we williams won all the grocery bids so it's not a um it's a line item bid so like if you order hamburger patties

or hamburgers and stuff like that it's just a per price thing it's just just just an approval that you've seen the beds and then i presented them to you it's not really much to see you can go in and see what the prices are we don't really have any options we only have the one vendor kind of scary it's kind of scary it is scary yeah so i mean they pulled out of columbia county richmond county everybody so all over the state what happened was during last year during covet they didn't schools weren't feeding when we did a big job of feeding but a lot of school systems weren't feeding and so they got rid of all their staff their truck drivers and everything and when all the business came back they decided to not

rehire staff and they're having trouble fighting truck drivers and finding staff and i think the school bids were the least profitable one so they stuck with restaurants and hospitals and got rid of all their school business for [Music] um the next thing is i don't know how many of y'all have experienced our charlie carts which are cooking classes that we do at the schools we currently have two charlie carts and one is located at the middle school and one is located at the primary school and um we schedule the cooking classes with the students and this year during coven we were not able to schedule classes because the principals didn't want the kids cooking and eating after each other and all those kinds of things but um what i'm requesting tonight is to add three

more charlie cards each charlie card is 10 000 each they are um right now when we what we would do is we'd schedule the charlie card at each school for like a month or six weeks and we'd have to ask paul williams and his staff to go get the charlie cart load it up and transfer it from school to school to school well they're huge they're heavy and it was very difficult so i reached out to all the principals at the schools of blake needs sardis and the high school and asked them if they would have a room that they would dedicate to if i bought them at charlie cart where we could go in and do the cooking classes and would not have to move the charlie cox from school to school to school

they were all very excited about it the other thing is we're going to have two food core employees this year that will be pretty much doing charlie cart classes all the time so they'll be able to go to all the schools and do the classes and so the the kids is really one of their very favorite things that they do they love to learn how to cook and it's a it's a nutrition education um project for me it's something that i'm really big on trying to teach the kids how to cook and they take the recipes home to their parents and sometimes the teachers call and say they're doing a study on the middle east and we go in and teach them how to make taziki and how to make middle eastern foods and so

we supplement the curriculum for them so this would come out of our budget yes sir i'm paying for it i'm paying for it and um we have the funds and um we've been doing some training on it and i think the teachers would tell you i know 21st century has one and they they love their their charlie card so this this would help maintenance it would allow us to do lots more classes be more flexible so they have a tarot garden and they're growing lettuce they call us and say they're harvesting the lettuce and we go in and do a cooking class with the lettuce form so if they're harvesting something out of the gardens we can do it more last minute whereas now we have to move the carts and it's just it'll help

maintenance and it'll help us and we'll help the kids you have any idea how long the weight will be for because i saw where i said you're on a waiting list yeah we have a pretty good relationship with them so i don't think it's going to be that long i do a lot we do a lot with her and she she applied for a usda grant and i wrote a letter for and she got the grant so i think we'll we'll be moving yes ma'am yes ma'am i make a motion and we let nutrition buy a three charlie parks and a second all right and the last thing i'm requesting is that we buy a forklift for the warehouse currently we have a lot of deliveries to the warehouse and we when they come they

tell us they're coming at one o'clock and they never show up at one o'clock so we'll call paul and say you know we're expecting a truck at one they show up at three and i have to call him and stone or somebody has to go to the warehouse and get their forklift and drive it over there which takes forever they have to unload all the stuff and drive it back it's very inconvenient so paul and i have been talking about the fact that his forklift is getting old and it only holds four thousand only lift four thousand pounds and that really for the warehouse what we're doing with unloading our trucks we need a heavier one so i'm requesting permission to purchase a forklift that they will drive nobody on my staff will be driving

the forklift it'll be housed at the warehouse so that when our trucks come in just one of maintenance personnel will come over unload the truck and leave it there it will be a backup for maintenance which i think you're going to get yes the beds are in that i attached um so i had no idea how expensive a forklift was but the low bid um mr williams got all the beds for me so he got these three bits and the low bid is two of them were the same exact and paul do you want to come up and talk about them um these are all three adjustment companies so of course exact um um one of them um they're the exact same specs exact same machine they are lp gas so we can fill them

up with the bus shop they burn out the propane just like every buses so that's a benefit for us they're clean burning fuel and we've got the fuel on site and it's pretty cheap to flush out yet the first one is the low bed the thompson lift chuck the one on top is twenty six thousand one hundred fifteen dollars and school nutrition would be paying for this too i'm not asking y'all to pay for it but it will be available for maintenance in the back up for their aging how old is your fourth lift uh it's a 70 something long 72 or 74 but the physical size of them are just about the same they're this one lifts more but it's no bigger so getting in and out of the warehouse it's not like we're

going up a huge it does lift more but it's because it's a new machine but the clearances and everything else the same so you're okay with the lug bedroom i am i'll be honest with you i'm not i'm not a full-time expert by any means but if you look at the warranties on them they're pretty good and they put very many hours on one the clean burning engines uh they got the thing that's behind a uh engine zone which are pretty good engine i'd like to say we can fill them up with his bloodshot best shot bus shot works on what we've got now i've talked to reverend dickman i don't think it'll be any issue once the warranty gets out and then getting cars all three of these companies we're out of augusta so

if there is an issue it's you know 30 miles up the road a lot of different [Music] thank you very much i appreciate it that's it thank you we have dr hickman audio enhancement for program come on up thank you i believe that the proposal itself is is in the packet for you all all the enhancement is um the plan here is it involves kind of a three-pronged approach to upgrading the um the in inside the building communication um one i'm talking about that i'm talking about the intercom systems the speakers um and that'll hit at the communication aspect a safety aspect and actually an instructional improvement aspect um from communication standpoint we've got uh a couple of schools where the intercom system is still the box in the front office where you go and

flip a switch to call a classroom and under the the um current situation those are those are not optimal they're they're not the safest that we could have for communicating within the building and you know even though that uh equipment and i'm i'm using blatantly is one of those skills right even though it's not terribly old it's still older and um outdated as far as technology goes so the project would include updating the intercom systems and integrating them with our our computer network just so you all know both mr williams and mr wright have have participated in the discussions as we've gone through this and and with the demonstrations and what have you um it will allow for us to configure bell schedules from a computer it will allow for uh communicating to and from

classrooms from multiple access points throughout each one of the schools it would also include lanyards for the teachers and so this would remove the need for someone to go to the back of the room or to the door and hit a panic button if there were an emergency situation because the panic button would be around their neck the cool thing about that is the speaker system would be set up to triangulate that teacher's location so if they don't happen to be in their classroom but out in the lunchroom or the mall area or the commons area or even outside the three closest speakers would triangulate on their their panic button and alert the office to where that situation is in the event that the teacher was unable to say where they're located when the problem

comes up from the instructional side of things um it they have some research that showed that classroom amplification because the teacher wearing the lanyard it's also a mic and so within the classroom as the teacher is speaking it's going to the speaker in their classroom is going to pick it up and amplify their voice so that all students in the classroom hear it clearly there the research even goes into the difference between enunciating constant consonants vowels in the classroom and how students who have any level of auditory processing issues may not be grasping everything that's being said by the teacher so students who who have an identified auditory processing problem or or hearing impairment would benefit from this but then every student has incidental benefit through the use of the amplification it would also include

if if i'm correct on this connectivity to to alert school-wide of an emergency if necessary it's a it's a a sizable amount i know if you've looked at the proposal the the money there is is large but we have a unique opportunity here with our american rescue plan funds to address this and it is i've already reached out to the program coordinator at georgia department of education to make sure that this would be along the lines of something that they would approve and they would there are only three or four items in here that i would even have to seek written prior approval from doe on and those are all the head in systems for the schools to replace the the main system that that takes care of the communication back and forth the intercom

system if you will everything else uh the unit price is low enough that we wouldn't have to even seek the written permission from them behind and that's the time to do it we got the money to do it now with this grant that's what we're here to improve everything for the children and i think i mentioned this to you mr jenkins when you call it it's a sustainable system because the the fee that we we have up front for purchasing and installing anytime there's an update we don't have to pay for that update the company automatically sends it to us and it it it's there um and then there's the service agreement that goes into the hardware portion of it but as far as system-wide updates for it it's part of the package so the

sustainability is built if you have a sub teacher because you're talking about each teacher will wear one what do they do like if they have a sub in that room that's a really good question that i can't answer but i will definitely reach out to uh mr lee max who who's the gentleman i've been working with on this and ask him that's my good one about three years ago i attended a meeting uh and they did uh different um presentations um this this particular communication item stood out among all of them to me they work exclusively with school systems with nobody else they just work with school systems and the founder of the company started it because she had two hearing impaired children and she wanted them to be able to have access to the

instruction in the classroom and it has grown from there so what you need yes sir and to add this to our our arp uh budget yes sir okay yeah i have a question more questions this is a big purchase but if you're all ready it's a good thing yes that's right it's getting us an update with money we didn't expect to have that's true so we need to do it so why is [Music] a3 communications thank you so much how long you've been working on this i first encountered it several years ago when i was down the hall in the student services office and it just the timing has never been right because it is a major expense but it seemed to fit nicely thank you okay next thing we have gsba district 10 report

i am the one which i almost missed the meeting because you received the zoom information and i didn't i looked for the information a day and a half and who gets it with you but i found out it went to secretaries and to everybody else except directly to delegates yes you did you did you did in a matter of minutes i just want to give you a brief update this meeting took place on june 29th i was hosted by jimmy atkins who at that time was our district 10 director for gsba and the program consisted of a board development update by valerie wilson valerie commented on the success of the gsba conference both virtually and in person and she also reminded us of the self-evaluation forms that on the website that board members are supposed

to complete and she also said if we completed those forms that would give us an idea of what we needed training on and they are due she thought was the end of september uh either the first of october there was also a legislative update from angela paul who is the gsba director of policy and legislative services who spoke on critical race theory crt she stated there was no critical race curriculum but it has been aligned with diversity equity social emotional learning and inclusion those words we are familiar with we also had uh update from the vision person dr steve barker dr barker who works along with lanita jackson uh they worked with 50 stakeholders to compare the best practices which is the uh which is the georgia vision project with the national level and they

were pleased that most of their recommendations were relevant and he also stressed how important it is to use our mission and vision uh to do our what is it our strategic plan and i know i've heard that before uh also last but not least the final uh the election of the gsba director for district 10 for 2022 again is jimmy atkins of augusta georgia and mr acting does a newsletter he reminded us and anytime we have any news please get that news to him and he will be glad to report it in his newsletter that concludes my report if there any questions you can hold until after the meeting and i was trying to find answers um next we have superintendent report prior to work yes sir i have two things to share and then

two things for discussion um i want to congratulate and share with you i received this information this past weekend the pride of burke county marching band has been invited to participate in the national independence day parade um june uh july 4th 2022 in washington dc so there in your packet is just a copy of the invitation as well as a copy of the letter they were nominated by governor brian kemp so kudos to our band directors and our band students for that opportunity and then you probably saw this past week um there was an article in the truth citizen actually was on our facebook page as well so congratulations to these three students we had miss shader kurd who scored first place in the division one speech um and then also mr pretz preston atkins

who scored uh second place in division two for his recyclable arts and i've seen a couple of those um very interesting pieces absolutely and um and then we have this sarah mallard who was recognized with the sixth place finish in division two speech so congratulations to those three students on those national honors and then um up for discussion of course we have july 31st our open house is uh coming up and there's been a request and i've taken this to the principals and got their input as well in the past we've done open house um from two to four for elementary and three to five from midland high school and so the request came to move those times to an earlier time so instead of two to four and three to five the request is

to have elementary from 10 to 12 in middle and high school from 11 to one and all the principals are on board with that check with them individually so we need um before we put those times out permission from the board [Music] yes sir um so this plan has been placed on the website and it's also been shared with the covert task force and it is a tentative plan but i certainly won't read it but um hopefully you've had a chance to look over it um we have updated the one from last year and i'm gonna put it in a simpler form to read instead of a page by page narrative um but we are planning to return to school with um instead of mass being mandatory or required as they've been in the past

we're using the terminology strongly recommended and so that is one change we will still do the um the checks um still asking uh students to stay home the cleaning is still um in place and um it just kind of sums up what we're what how we will return return to school so are there any questions or concerns about anything you've read in the plan you said too you're on the same math uh open house we want to have a mask because there will be a number of people we have no idea what the numbers will be like of course you're going to speak to the principles about control you know several interests and things like that but we have no idea how many people are going to show up so on that day we want

to have mass we have mass available for those who don't we will have so many places they've always had some at the schools but we will make sure that we need to try to get that word out yeah sooner than later we will publish it as soon as you want to approve it um are they going to still have to do the tracking contact question yes and i'm just pleased to see the plan in place um for everybody to see and it's going to be you know face to face yes sir that's are we going to direct them to like georgia or whatever that's as long as we give them somewhere to go look and it's free too but we have asked that the teachers you know continue to keep up with their google classrooms

because if there's an incident where a child is out for two weeks or something that's what we certainly don't want the students to get behind but those are the only situations that we're using the virtual learning for the google classrooms [Music] you have something else that's all i have for open session [Music] someone make the most we go to the conversation to talk about personnel discuss personnel [Music] is
