Okay, I'd like to call to order the October 14th board meeting. Um, we have the invocation and pledge for Mr. Jackson to kick us off. >> Bow your heads. Heavenly Father, I thank you for allowing us to come together this evening. I ask you to watch over our children and watch over everyone that's in this room. Lord, please give the board guidance to make the right decisions, the right decisions to to protect our children and educate our children. And all these things we ask in Jesus Christ's name we pray. Amen. >> Amen. Ice to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands. One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. [Applause] >> I might want to move that flag so nobody can stand it,
but bear in mind my rear end the whole time. Thank you'all for being here. Um, let's move on to the spotlight with Miss Johnson. >> Good evening. We have some outstanding achievements to recognize tonight. So, I'm going to invite Assistant Superintendent Steve Waters to come and recognize these individuals. >> Okay. Thank you, Miss Johnson, and members of the board of education. Superintendent Blackabby. It's my honor tonight to recognize um a couple groups of people that are very important to our school system. First, we would like to recognize a couple of our police officers for the work they did. Um, this work went by without being told to anybody, and it was anonymous, but um, it caught our attention, so we wanted to honor them tonight for the work they did. So, I'd like to ask
Lieutenant Spalding and Scoggin to come up. They were wondering why they were here. Um, of course, Chief Davis and Major Kennedy are here with them. Um, but on Monday, August 11th, 2025, Lieutenant Scog and Lieutenant Spalding responded to a single car accident on Haberssham Street behind Brunswick High School. Upon arrival, they found the driver unresponsive, not breathing, and with little to no pulse. They quickly identified the driver was overdosing on opioids, and in response, Lieutenant Skogan administered two doses of Narcan, which revived the driver and likely saved her life. Their quick recognition and response made the difference in this situation. And equally as important are the efforts of Chief Davis to better equip our board of education officers. Earlier this year, overdose emergency kits were issued to all officers. And to our knowledge, one of
these kits was utilized that very day to save this lady's life. So the efforts that we do when we're spending money on school safety and safety for our police officers certainly paid its price that day and we're so thankful for these two and the job they did. So congratulations [Applause] want to get a picture. Okay. Hard to top that. Um, so I think last time I got to speak with the school board, we talked a little bit about the value of having partners in our community and partners that were certainly u irreplaceable. And one of those is of course our local health system and the support they give to our school system. Um, we have a lot of them present here tonight and I'll introduce them in just a minute. But that relationship and that
partnership certainly paid off um this past April when uh Brunswick Kai was having their spring football practice. Um it was just a normal day of practice for the Pirates as they were getting ready for the fall season and um spring football's not like a normal practice even though it's you've got pads on and it's warm and the sandats are starting to get warmed up. But um this day, little did we know um our defensive coordinator, a man we all love, had a little surprise for us. U coach Thomas Tedar had a s sudden cardiac death incident on the field. Um and it was amazing. And I I told all of our coaches um in pre-planning that, you know, we we practice this and we go we go through things every year. We talk about situations.
We have emergency action plan situations, but you hope you never have to use them. And in this case, uh, we had to use them and they worked out flawlessly. I put the timeline there, but um, Coach Tedar, uh, the first coach reached him within 10 seconds. Our athletic trainer, who we'll introduce in a minute, who is the hero of the day, uh, was in him within 30 seconds. um she immediately activated our emergency action plan. We had a coach that was designated to call 911. We had another coach who was actually our head coach. He went and retrieved the AED. Um meanwhile, Hunter had begun checking all his vitals, getting his shirt removed, getting starting CPR. Um, long story short, she had to shock coach Tedar twice um to get him back to life and
get a weak pulse before the EMTs got there. Everything from the minute literally he fell to the minute he was getting in the ambulance was within 10 minutes. And um certainly without the AED and without Hunter, I don't think coach would be with us today. So the life-saving efforts of our coaches, our trainers, um the work they get through the hospital, the training they get through them is certainly a relationship in the school system that is um one we want to continue forever as long as I am here and uh one we are so thankful for. Um and the last part of course is couple pictures of our hero for the day. Um but um you know I think I think um coach Tedar said it the best. Um he went on Facebook and said
a couple things and then I but basically um how good God is and how much he wants to thank Hunter for being the first on the scene and as he said hitting him with the AED u to save his life. And so um coach we're grateful that you're here with us today. um all you do for our kids. You scared us, but we have some heroes that were ready for you and um all the training worked out and we're so grateful for that. Um so I want to introduce a few folks from the hospital today. U we have Paul Trumbull who is over our I don't even know what all you're over a lot sports medicine. >> Sports medicine. Um we have Dr. Sasser, who's our team physician for everyone, who um is an orthopedic
surgeon here locally, but is at all our football games and um does so much that people don't recognize. Um so we're thankful for Dr. Sasser. We have Rebecca Joiner who is back here and she kind of oversees our trainers. Uh I don't know her official title either, but she's everywhere from middle school to high school. And then we have the hero of the day, Hunter Gantes. [Music] might ask her to come on up along with the rest of her team and invite her to inductive hall. And I think it shows you how much she's appreciated. They trained Hunter to Glenn Academy this year for three five stars and a bag of Oreos and but the coaches are still here because they appreciate all that she did so much which I think is a great gesture.
Thank you, Coach Grady, for coming. You want to say anything? >> Thank you for coming. I appreciate you. I'm glad that you're here. >> We're going to come up and stand in front of the board and get our picture there. >> Okay. No, you're fine. We don't need you. >> Sure. >> Y'all can get on both sides. >> No, we're good. Y'all good. I'll let you get [Applause] Yeah, I just want to say a few words. I mean, um I'm going just say, you know, God was definitely in control that day. Um, >> everything was just just God, spiritled. Everybody was in place. Uh, I wish I could have seen G run to get the AD. That would have been enough for me. Yeah. But, you know, like I said, you know, everything was just
was just God and just spiritled. And, um, you know, I'm just thankful to be still here. That lets me know that God's not done with me yet. there's something I still got to do. Um, and the great I I got great news because a lot of people don't know this, but about a month ago, I just had a ultrasound on my heart. They wanted to see the strength and see how everything was going. And um, we just got the results back yesterday. So, I had to go back to the cardiologist yesterday. And, you know, it was just the way the cardiologist was speaking to us, me and my wife, about how everything looked structurally and the strength. and he just had this weird look like, you know, I like I don't even know how this
is possible. Does that make sense? Because but that just shows you the power of God right there. You know, God is still in control and and will always be in control. And um I think, you know, moving forward, we all need to put God first because I mean, he is the end all to everything. So, I mean, I just want to say thank you. And then Hunter, from my family to yours, I'm going to give you this And again, thank you. I love you. >> You're my daughter. [Applause] >> Thank you. Thank you. >> Just just just real quickly, guys. Um I don't know how you follow anything like that. Um all I have to say is is simply thank you. And uh you know, miracles do happen for sure. Um, thank God they were
angels that day, both these days. Um, and all of you are angels, whether you you have to perform life- saving um, techniques every day or not. We're we're thankful you're here and you're ready for when things like that happen. For our coaches, our teachers, our our kids, um, anybody you come in contact with in the in the community as well. So, we're thankful that you all are here. We're thankful that you give your time, you give your extra time. Um, you're away from your homes and your families do a lot to help us out, too. So, thank you so much for what you do. We appreciate it. Um before we go to citizen address of the board, we don't have anybody tonight signed in, but um we do have Miss Sams on the phone. Mr.
Sams, I didn't forget you, but um Miss Sams is on the phone with us um as well. She's out of town um this week. Um those citizens address the board. Do have a motion to approve the agenda. So move >> moved by Mr. Jackson. >> Second by Miss Lee. Any discussion? All those in favor? I >> 5. >> Um consent agenda items. Um I'll just run down them real quick if that's okay. Um approval of the September board meeting minutes. Uh number seven, um items 8A personnel, 8B, field trips. Um 8 C1 uh goo report. Um under the finance committee 8D um one are the any of these you guys want to discuss. Just stop if you do. Um uh D1 approval of the August 25 uh 2025 financial report. Um 8D2 approval of surplus

So, we're just going to put a um >> we're going to put the policy committee on the consent as well, but we'll talk about that policy and approve it next. Or is that this one? >> No, we approve it in the next meeting. >> Right. Next. >> Okay. Any additions or
deletions? I think I added everything. So, any any deletions? >> I entertain a motion to approve the consent agenda. I'll make a motion that we approve the consent agenda. >> Uh moved by Mr. Jackson. >> Second. Second by Mr. Dodge. Any discussion? All those in favor? >> I approve. >> Uh it's 5 Z. Good deal.
