[Music] country board of education's reporter similar to the public meetings act after public notice has been given by the secretary of the asian country board of education in the following matter posting would be noted in the travolta board of board education office emailing written notice that burma county climbs on mr candidate here this is normal here mr media mr at this point in time the emotion could go into an executive session whereas the njsk 104.4 allows for public body to go into closed session and wherever the board of education is necessarily discuss certain matters which are exempted from the public and whereas the regular meeting of the board of education we've been following the end of the session approximately 7 am now that would be a result of what does indication go into this session

[Music] comments [Music] yes [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] ah [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] um [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] so [Music] do [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] do [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] do [Music] yes age of students meaningful learning experiences partnership with students dedicated staff to families and community the district provides a strong educational foundation that will empower the students to activate or achieve their unique perspective achieve their unique potential embrace self-dedicated lifelong learning develop the skills necessary for appropriate risk-taking and responsible decision-making respect themselves and others and problem-solving individually and collaboratively and become contributing members of a diverse global society i apologize for that okay we do not have any presentations today so we're going to

go straight to uh public comment for agenda items only uh this meeting will now be open to the public referencing agenda items only however through questions or comments for teams of litigation student or personnel items or negotiations we ask you to see the superintendent after the meeting since you do not discuss these matters in public please limit your comments in three minutes per person anybody have any items on the agenda they wish to discuss just make sure to state your name and adventure my name is rick i live in marlton new jersey some of my grandkids call me pop-up like my granddaughter who's here today why am i here i pay 10 000 a year in school taxes and have done so for over 30 years that goes towards your salaries so i have not

only a right to speak but a duty my three kids went to your government schools and now two of my grandkids are attending i like tens of thousands of parents across the u.s are angry and outraged and aren't going to sit back and just allow your decisions on what they must wear and what they are being taught go unchallenged after all we pay your salaries yes i am talking about mass mandates and critical race theory my kids and now grandkids did not see color but government schools are teaching them all about color today many years ago a famous person said and i quote i have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of

their character shameful that we have arrived to this point today masks are being mandated by our governor so you are simply doing what he says well we all know some governors are not mandating mass and allowing parents to make that call yet the board of education in those states aren't abiding by those governors so i don't want to hear that's why you're doing it let's be clear we all know the governor made decisions early on that killed thousands of nursing home patients and yet here we are listening to him again i plan to be attending future board of education meetings not because i want to but because i feel i have to my hope is this room will be filled to its capacity when meetings are held after the summer when many who are still

on summer vacation return home oh and by the way it was nice to start your meetings with the pledge of allegiance i think more than ever with the state that we are in today that is the least you can do thank you for your time um well first of all um i think it's your last name so i played her where mr renk okay little casablanca um i just want to address two things that you talked about first of all with reverse race theory that is not a part of new jersey's student learning standards it has not been part they were just adopted in 2020 they're available online and you can actually go through them at in any manner that you mentioned if you want to copy the curriculum you've shown you can also make

that request to see that as well but it's just not there that's important number two uh with regards to the executive order and exactly order 251 the mass media executive order uh promulgated by the governor during the time of the state of emergency is the force of law and as my advice is this school district solicitor it has been my advice to all the school districts that i represent because i represent dozens of school districts throughout the state is that they are required to call them there is no leeway and i appreciate that maybe in other states other communities they're you know challenging what the governors of those states have required or said they couldn't require really i think that was your point is that in other states governors haven't made demandings so the school

boards themselves have said we're not following or no man people we're going to go and mandate it but as for that i would suggest violating a law and in fact quite frankly this board came by first under title 18 which governs boards of education and local education agencies they are required number two under the school ethics act they're required to follow all lawful orders of governor state board of education commissioner of education and the legislature third if they fail to follow order including the quarter through an executive order the commissioner of education is directed to the whole state aid to boards of education which failed to follow all the wars so given that constellation of consequences it has not been our voice now that doesn't mean that i agree with the mandate that doesn't mean

that this border position that doesn't mean that you know people have can have their own opinions in every fashion as you can see i've only did this man it applies to requiring a mask during this local public legislative proceedings because as you notice that what's required in every room for a master i think the idea of the board where massive money is to say we understand this is a burden for the kids who understand this part of the staff and it's something we're willing to shoulder with them in solidarity however all that said and done i also appreciate that in certain environments i've had this conversation in other communities people have said all those executive orders are really not going to get forced it's really not going to have any consequences and i would suggest

that there are you know business owners in fact gym voters who are most likely to be bankrupted by their their approaching of saying that borders were involved orders are law school districts require flawed there is no leeway with regards to the massive inmate and there's a very clear and i wouldn't suggest it any one way or another from a political standpoint but there's a very clear office and position in person to whom all these inquiries or requests or recriminations should be directed that's the governor's office this is from the governor and where you whether you consider to be serendipitous or not being good but whether serendipitous or fortuitous or what have you he's up for reelection and this state has the opportunity the entire state has the opportunity to address how it feels our state

government disabled this situation and i encourage people to go exercise their friendships thank you any other questions or comments just please say your name and address luke gordon um 13 app away you stated that an executive order is a law am i correct when you saying that i said that an executive order has the force of law as the force of law because laws are made they're they're they're voted on by the house and the senate he has the right to do an executive order under a state emergency which i don't think we're in anymore am i correct no you're wrong we're no longer a public health emergency we're still the state of america and when was that issue that was in executive order 103 has are in a state of emergency yeah well i

i don't know assuming you have kids but this is destroying our kids lives they have no facial recognition with their friends they have to wear these masks constantly which are proven that these masks are more of a detriment to their health than them not code 19 is a 99.9 survival rate with children this is absolutely ridiculous that we're sitting here again following this when you know that you can go against this governor's mandate and i don't understand why we're just gonna whatever and do what he wants i mean i'm sure there's a lot of other parents here that feel the same way and it's just absolutely ridiculous we're gonna put our children through this for another year and it's crazy the vaccine is proven that the mass is going to work and the vaccine doesn't

work you could still contract it and you can still pass it on so what is the point it's an absolutely ridiculous thing that we're doing our children and we also wish me [Music] sure my name is joanna inglesis i live at 4-1 central blaine um i have two boys that go to dimacey um one's in middle school and one's in elementary um i i totally agree with the two gentlemen that just spoke um i think these masked mandates are ridiculous um i don't think that the kids should be wearing them anymore um i don't think it's been well proven that these paper masks don't work there's plenty of evidence that they don't work the children do not transmit the virus you are all smart people re read the evidence it's ridiculous first of all they

call cause anxiety breathing issues that's the reason i don't wear it is i have anxiety i can't wear the mask i have a hard time thinking when i wear the mask and sir you mentioned the crt that does actually um that is known by other names such as diversity and inclusion and equality that it does go by other names so um the fact that you might not call it crt you might call it equality diversity and inclusion it does go by other names so you might not call it crt it does go by other names i would look that up so you might not call it crt but it does go by other names you might call it diversity inclusion equality other names so if it looks like a duck cracks like a duck it's

a duck also um i really am surprised about how long we've gone on wearing these masks considering all the issues that we had before these masks with school safety issues such as school shootings things like that it really does concern me the fact that children are allowed to continue wearing these masks in school i got mrs romanelli's email the other day and the school safety plan but i didn't see anything in there about how we're going to address the school of safety issues with people wearing masks coming into the school i mean it seems like a really big concern to me that we're going to let people come into the school wearing masks when we had all these problems just before coming um i really would like the school to address that my kids really

don't want to wear masks i don't think that they should i don't think that it's safe it causes a lot of anxiety causes a lot of breathing issues we're going into our third year of wearing these masks enough's enough if i hear one more person say that kids are resilient as a mother of a cancer survivor enough my kid has not had a normal year of school in his life he is finally done with his treatment and everything i want him to have a normal year of school give him that he deserves that my kids have not learned nearly as much as they should not for lack of trying on anyone's part but nothing will replace classroom learning without a mask these kids need to see faces and if you're going to insist on these

ridiculous mass at least where the see-through ones goodness sakes they have them now have the teachers want to see through mass it's not like this mask do anything anyway have the teachers wear the see-through mask i mean there was just a study from brown university that said kids today are being born with lower iqs than kids before coving this is just sad what is the world that we're living in today do better isn't that what biden said gosh i'm so fed up with these mass please be done with this ridiculousness thank you [Applause] anybody else wish to talk this week i see none we'll close that portion of me this mr president i just wanted to address again now that we're done with the public this purpose was the same comment um yet it is

my opinion my opinion and advice to this board i have an obligation to provide you legal voices that do not have the authority to disregard the executive order that it does have enforcing law that is enforceable both from a criminal status which i do not believe applied to but nonetheless possible administrative statement which uh directs the future of education to withholds the aid of those districts which failed to follow the government that's number one number two uh i do not believe that it is not my opinion that diversity inclusion is the same physical critical race theory uh i just disagree with that um i'm not considering the big criminal experience about critical studies two things which were developed out before we lost where i went and when should not agree with all the theories that

are contained there i did have the professors who came up with them i didn't agree with them all the time either surprisingly uh but it's not the same in your free spirit he's not in this new hearing series and finally i forgot to address uh the comment with regards to your salaries coming from for those who may not be aware board of education members are volunteers they're here volunteering their time to seek and oversee the writing of the schools they don't run the schools and ensure that they're well-run and so you know board members of you know if if i could i've done your salary for you know what you've had to try and work through your door and but you don't get myself you know there are salaries i want that to be very

clear please don't remind my husband of that thank you yeah i just wanted to add um diversity of the inclusion just for our district they're absolutely central and if you listen to the mission statement that we're at the beginning it's in there you know and it's part of who we all are um and that brown study that you mentioned about the children being born today that sounds really interesting and if you don't mind emailing all right let's move over to item six we're going to go to approval of the minutes i need [Music] any questions or comments pertaining to approval events seeing non-let's go to a roll call please this is capable yes yes yes mr ken yes this is noel i'm going to abstain since i left one meeting early [Laughter] uh before we

get into questions and comments i'm going to leave the floor to dr smith with his uh thank you mr music parody um i want to just a few words about the calendar that was just approved so we added action routine to that calendar which um i'll say first was actually a state holiday that was made a federal holiday recently so all school districts are adding um that holiday to their calendars we will observe juneteenth on friday june 17th so that does extend the school year by a day and i just want to make sure parents are aware of that and the first two makeup days for snow would be at the end of that week of june but then the third snow day makeup will actually come out of spring break so people are planning

trips or thinking about camps and things like that just to look you know the five emergency snow day makeup days are all listed on the calendar i'd like to um use the rest of my springtime's comments to talk a little bit about this coming school here so we had our plan approved back in june at the junior meeting and that plan at the time required masks because that was the requirement of a time based on the 2021 school year guidance the mass mandate which came out through governor murphy since that meeting um thus posed no changes to our plan pastor already required our plan so it needs no further uh reapproval or changes i communicated today with families some more aspects of our plan but you know if i was going to sum it up

it looks a lot like last year the reality is that what we accomplished last year provides a really great foundation for the coming school year all right last year we did typical full days with lunch and recess this coming school year with the typical full days lunch and recess the three main differences first there is no four mode option for families okay so what that means is we ended the school year with 20 of our families using the full road option so we will have 20 more students back in our buildings this year which is a positive right having more kids in school is a wonderful thing [Music] the students themselves bring so much richness into the school environment both for themselves and everyone else it also means just 24 more bodies right so they'll

be similar or less social distancing than last year maintaining three feet minimally the other variable is um and that also means that all of our other sort of mitigating our layer mitigations like ventilation air flow lasting uh sanitation hygiene symptoms checks from our families at home not sending kids didn't have a fever all of which everyone did really really well last year we continue to use that layered approach to safety this year and it remains just as important as last year in all aspects second major variable this coming year extracurricular activities so we didn't offer them last year this year we will and it's exciting because part of the full educational programming that our district is designed to provide that includes extra activities anyone who has participated in them over the years from their own

years in school sometimes the best memories that we have right actually started after school through the friends and the connections and the memories that we made in clubs activities sports et cetera so we're very excited about that it does mean that um you know students will be interacting with each other in more intersectional ways than they normally would we believe in looking at the experiences last year because we looked into high schools at our participators so we believe it can be safely done otherwise we wouldn't be doing it [Music] and so that is a variable [Music] so the variant that has brought us to where code is more active than we had hoped for at this point and again back to all the mitigations that we already did last year different safety measures that we're

going to continue to do i would add one word to that mention earlier which is vaccination we offered uh a vaccination clinic recently at um middle school we will to do something like that again and my updates for the last four weeks or so have included um reminders of where people can go for walk up no appointment vaccination clinics um currently vaccinations available for ages 12 of them so you know just want to make sure you have that information that they can use and um no matter what else you know as we think about the coming school year working that we came back to again and again last year was um schools have always mattered tremendously to families to children to communities and last year that seemed never more true in fact you know and

it was only through the incredible hard work of our board our entire staff our families that were able to accomplish what we did for kids last year and basically like show and bring them to um fruition how much how positively how much schools can matter and wherever we are now versus where we want to be that is going to be absolutely true again this year so for anyone who went in education or anyone who supports schools and leads in schools this year is going to be another opportunity to show how much schools matter every step of the way and you know i know his community can um give everything again for for our kids and then lastly um you might folks know that but we have we have amazing summer program that runs here 682

students participated in our summer program this year which miss maguilla is that set up all-time high 782 it is right that's my second way to actually turn it over to mr cool director of critical instruction just to say a little bit and show a little bit about our summer program so that we can see what went on okay [Music] okay all right sorry technical difficulties um so as dr smith said we did have a robust excellent thank you a robust uh summer programs that ran around july into august um i want to take a moment to thank number one all of our supervisors of those programs um as well as most importantly our staff that randy's program teachers paraprofessionals vice principals and everyone who was involved in all the programs we were able to serve

as many students exiting kindergarten of their incoming eighth graders based on particular needs it might have been literacy and might be math and different social skills it might have been extended school year um so we reached out to 700 kids so we're very proud of that number two for all of our students we do offer summer literacy and math projects so it's not a program where they attend during the month of july into august but it is what we encourage and ask all of our students to participate in each year um so with that we have several reading books this year we have a one one school one theme as a district so no matter what book you pick for your required reading it's connected to kindness which brings a lot of kindness in our

world um and that will be connected to a year-long theme that our students are looking at so if anybody in this or like um that are here anyone who's not started that project would certainly encourage students to do that a special thank you to our trivia department who creates these so these can be found on our district website right on the front page it's on the district and school websites under announcements and you just click on summer literacy and math when you do that you get information about the project we have student videos on the books that were selected by students and library media specialists and then we have descriptions of the projects and some of the tasks that can be done create choice boards and i'll show an example here's a math choice board

where students can participate either in different might be games it might be tasks that they're completing um or different projects these are things that they have choice about so they're selecting five from about 12 choices um one of the options is a summer padlet and that's what i showed the board curriculum committee when we met and well doesn't have to practice tonight as well so this is an example of the middle school projects that have happened so we connected this to the math practice standards and making connections so it's just how did you use math when connecting with others this summer so some kids actually posted about what they did using that other students actually posted about actual other tasks that are on that choice board so we had over 250 middle school students participate

so far and i will just look down some did videos some took pictures some just wrote about the different things that they did and we are excited to see that we encourage other middle school students who haven't completed that yet to do that we also had choice boards for elementary school and they have their own padlet as well where again you will see they have the same task about connecting sounded pictures some actually wrote math problems some just wrote words and the same thing where some all used it in all different ways so let's flip through we have our math coaches and our tech coaches so a special shout out to them and they actually approve of all the posts so they go in and you will see an example right there a student actually

showed how things matter and how it actually goes back to them to acknowledge uh the work that they were doing so just to flip through some of those so in total for math we're about a little under 500 we also have the same for literacy so we look at an example it has the books that are connected to kindness at the top that students have shown them what they read as well and then one of the things that they could do is the padlet for literacy so here's an example of elementary and here we just ask students to share if they would choose to or want to that they argue so you see kids did again pictures sometimes just words connecting books and talking about reading some of them posted projects that they did so

they might do a video a commercial you can see this little girl did a video some use the actual um books that were required and some just heard about books that they read on their own so we're happy with all of those it's for snapchat and then the same is true for middle school as well so same thing great reads and they would write book recommendations is what middle school was asked to do some connected with the book again that was one of the choices others connected with other books so that is a quick overview of some of the work we've been doing and again we encourage students to continue to complete the project while also balancing the joyous summer before september [Applause] oh yeah it's just and that person gets embarrassed um [Applause] [Music]

um but this is the final run and um so everybody who can see the guy who makes all the magic happen so that people can participate and follow along and think about how many views different livestreams you got and just how you've been able to amplify um and how to disseminate the thoughts the ideas that are shared here so that everybody can benefit and we benefit if they go back and rewatch um and that's just like one tiny slice of a huge high of positive things that you've done for our district over many many years and just a small token without you because many of your friends we aren't really sports fans so we have some really sports careers [Applause] that concludes my super chat any questions or comments pertaining to uh item number seven

superintendent's report or some versus doing this retirement yes mike i just want to thank you for all the uh times that you've had to get me zoomed in and part of the meeting i appreciate that and so that's for a very quick lack of nervousness all right let's go to roll call please this is ever hard yes mr president yes yes yes this is lol yesterday yes thank you all right to item eight curriculum and destruction i need a motion approved items eight one through eight five dollar motion brochures this is funny all right uh any questions or comments pertaining to curriculum and construction scene let's go to real quick please this is cacao yes this is edward yes this is yes mr canton yes this is paul yes mr medinan yes did her vote

[Music] all right item number nine uh finance and operations i need a motion to approve items nine one through nine sixteen by question but brush about this second second verse again any questions or comments pertaining to finance and operations ms noel just a comment about how excited i am that we have our first organization that has a board and they will be advertising on eleven of our buses this is the points i'm sorry cub scouts of america and uh they did provide the proof of what the signage will look like and it looks wonderful very colorful so very excited for that thank you questions or comments for finance and operations i just want to take this opportunity to say yes thank you to the boy scouts for being the first organization to do so we

hope that by doing that and it being a live stream that will be some other local organizations and businesses in town that will follow suit and continue to help the school board and the school district get some revenue so please you know consider advertising on our buses your local businesses would be a great opportunity for you to get your name out and um you know love the school district at the same time so thank you boy scouts and to everyone else who might be considering doing so in the future thank you um i just was curious how are we letting the public know that they had advertising process the general public all that association [Music] local business organizations um i've shared it in our my updates um i'll probably have a half a dozen time

duty since we sort of first generated the idea back in the winter and i think my most recent share even added like dangled extra positive which is that we're open to ideas that businesses may have so for example um the one concrete one i mentioned is we could park a bus with the advertisement on it outside that um in that business you know if they wanted for like a special event or something just to make people can make a connection that this is the business that's supporting the school buses and because it really is it says a lot mrs everhart touched on this it says a tremendous amount positively about that business that they would be willing to advertise not just anywhere it's not like just any old billboard alongside your advertising law it's something

that directly supports kids and it really speaks to the core mission of that business that they would choose to to spend their dollars in that way and to tell them how much they see themselves as embedded in the community that they serve and so um you know that's what we're hoping to bring out i just want to say i'm sure we did some a little bit last year but we will probably do so this next time we are the pta team president's meeting you know those those people that attend those meetings are lifeline of their school community and they really are the source of the school board and the school district getting that word out and no matter what the topic is so that's a great roundtable that we can say to them you can

take this information to your school community a lot of people that have that live and work and have kids coming here that have their own business so you know not only with the mba that's that resource but we're going to tap into these you know mommies and adams that sit around the table here to send that message to their school community [Music] any other questions or comments all right see now that's going to roll this is good yes yes this is chris harrow yes yes mr candy yes this is thank you moving to item 10 personality i need a motion to improve items 10 1 through 10 11 divided motion [Music] and i'm sorry mr summers thank you for all your years of service and we surely will miss you especially on technology committee you

have been wonderful working with us all these years and having worked with mr case by your side getting to know him at the technology committee meetings i know that the district will be in very good hands with him at now so congratulations to both of i was you to say the same thing you know good luck frank uh we go back and sit on the board for a long time so i also appreciate the fact that when we would go to some of those uh school board trainings and stuff you know you would just be on the forefront of uh protecting our information and making sure that you stayed on top of making that firework and uh you would all say to us that we really were admired by other districts you would say that

to us that people wanted to be like you should and you were in that regard technologically because that was the topic that night so thank you for being so forward thinking and driving all these initiatives to the technology committee and to you frederick it's been a pleasure for welcome to the chaos good luck okay anyone else all right seeing none let's go to a roll call please [Music] yes [Music] uh any questions or comments pertaining to um to policy seeing none let's go to world cup [Music] yes yes this is yes mr negan yes mr brown yes thank you at this point in time we're going to go to committee reports does any committee have you wish to share any of their reports yes not necessarily that was really tremendous a lot of people participated

it was a great event and um got to see the police dogs so that was also encouraging but it was great to see that the community came out in such journals it was really really fun so i was great to see that awesome thank you it was funny anybody else right move to item 13 old business there is no old business so don't give us 14 new business there's no new business either all right so going into item 15 and this is open public comment this meeting will now be open to the public referencing any items of interest however if your questions or comments pertain to litigation student or personal items or negotiations we'd ask you to see the superintendent after the meeting since you do not discuss these matters in public please leave your

comments to three minutes per person maybe we should speak about anything on that one that being said i'm gonna close that portion of the meeting all right and that leads us into board announcements we want to announce anything again i'm sorry okay um when i think about state funding in s2 i think that it seems as if the people at the state level on the county level think that we're more affluent than we are as a district so we were thinking of ways that we could try and try and help our kids a bit more right on i think when we're talking regularly about the pandemic the fact that some house is uneven edited that really is shocking to some of us but a real issue um so councilman freeman and i came up with

a backpack drive so for the last couple weeks we've been gathering donations um to the table and national night out um we got a a lot of donations come in and it seems as if though we haven't gotten there yet i think we're two or three away but we'll have over 100 full backpacks for you kids because there's a lot of background drives going on but they're all at the county level so this is all for our kids specifically completely filled backpacks down to the tissue boxes and water bottles in there so at least a hundred bags probably we'll see but uh backpack drives ends tomorrow and then we'll be able to get those bags until it gets answered this upcoming school year so kentucky thank you i think that's a phenomenal phenomenal thing that

uh a pretty collaborative map was a part of i think you brought that point home very clearly a lot of people believe that based upon arranging who we are that we're just absolute town and quite simply isn't true for the majority of people who live here and i remember being in a board committee meeting years back and one of the things that we were dealing with uh were kids that were in our schools that were homeless and sometimes we have a tendency to forget those that are in need and some something like this it may be even just the smallest thing to get them started and the smallest thing can make the biggest impact for those kids in need so i'm very thankful for what you guys did in the health council and dr smith

and i think that is an incredibly noble effort and hopefully it'll make every year a little better thank you yeah so and then thanks to councilman freeman and the mayor as well because uh dr smith obviously sent out all his updates to get people to donate but i think it was the the i guess the master of town council really helped us get so many um um i just wanted to wish all staff and parents and students the best of luck as they enter the new school year yes it's not ideal yes it's not perfect but it'll be a great one and if we just keep our mind open as to what is best for our kids right now and that is getting a great education so thank you for all the standard words over
