learning experiences in partnership with students dedicated staff families and community the district provides a strong educational foundation that will empower our students to achieve their unique potential embrace self-directed lifelong learning develop the skills necessary for appropriate risk-taking and responsible decision-making respect themselves and others problem solve individually and collaboratively and become contributing members of a diverse global society and here we are at presentations where we're seeing many of those tenets of the mission statement being presented tonight so i wish to give the floor to dr smith as we get to finally recognize students for the 2021 school year i am pumped let's do this all right this is so exciting thank you mr fizzakero so student recognitions it's the absolute best activity a board could do and we've had to wait an entire year to be

able to get to a point where it was safe to do this and so there's a lot of anticipation it's amazing to see students just students in the room in fact and students and parents in the room so we have a lot of different students to recognize and what i'm going to do is um so i'll call the students names and when your name is called if you can come forward we have certificates for you and then um we have a couple different groupings of awards and so after your name is called and you come forward and get your certificate if you can stay standing here up front until your grouping is done because that way people can take a picture of you with your group individually and with your group okay so um and

the first group is this is a really special event every year okay so the burlington county school boards association hosts what's called an 8th grade dialogue and it is basically an 8th grader from every middle school in the entire county so it's really special one 8th grader per middle school and so and it's a chance for school board members to get to hear directly from 8th graders what their school experience is like so i think it's great the school boards does that it's a chance for them to understand what the middle school experience is like both individually in schools and across the county and no one tells it better than the students themselves right so all right first up stephen willie from demacy middle school come on down [Applause] congratulations just stay standing here okay

and then uh from middle school we have danielle cazeros come on down and if someone's not here physically they're with us in spirit and we're going to save their certificate and we'll get it to him tomorrow or early next week so but um stephen thank you so much and if anyone wants to take a picture this is a great time for that mr summers thank you all right next up the new jersey mathematics league contest winners nothing stops math from going on right so and these are some incredible numbers here so first group we have the demacy middle school sixth grade team which placed third in burlington county 31st in the state led by teachers brian connelly and maria and basie and i'm going to call the students up one at a time so evan

okay and before we move on um one special round of applause we have mr gary hoffman and miss irene romanelli right down in front here principles of moral middle school and dimacey middle school fosters of math fantasticness so thank you both very very much our last recognition for students this is going to be for winners of the friends of the black run preserve people of the pines art contest people of the pines people of peace are contests this is a brand new art contest that was done this year the planning for which started all the way back in the summer and before we um show and announce the students if the um chair of the friends of the black run is here which is john volpa there's john i wanted um to give john a

chance mr bubble a chance to speak a bit about the contest no one can describe it better it's very intentional um arrangement and creation than mr wolpa so mr you wouldn't mind just uh sharing a bit about it great thank you very much last september the friends of the black run proposed this art contest people piece people the pines to dr smith and after i quickly provided a synopsis of yvesham's very unique cultural heritage he was instantly supportive soon a partnership formed a judging committee that included members of yvesham township's human rights advisory council the ysham township school district staff from the middle and middle school pta members helped create the contest framework and provided the background information about the history of our corner of the pine barrens in west jersey in january the contest

launched and historical facts about our region and beyond were presented to the students then allowing them to take part of this history take part of this story to find artistic inspiration our four top place winners focused upon some key historical figures or synthesize the larger concepts woven into our history the story begins with the land which was one which was home of the original people beleni lenape descendants of the paleo natives who lived here ten thousand years ago during the last ice age when it was not pine barrens but tundra the lennie lenape were known as peacemakers among the algonquin tribes of the east coast region matriarchal people who recognized the equality of women within their society they were shrewd negotiators and defenders of the land which included all of new jersey eastern pennsylvania and

delaware into upstate new york these people maintained control of their land longer than any other tribe on the east coast and perhaps because they had the good fortune to interact with the first swedes and finns who settled along the delaware river and established respectful and peaceful relationships with them then welcoming the english quakers in in burlington and then eveshum with whom they shared a world view of brotherhood tolerance and equality in other words they shared in common human rights therefore no war ever occurred in west jersey between the leni lenape and the english quakers our art contest challenged middle school students to digest these facts and interpret them sixth grader adele laurie our fourth place winner illustrated this diverse cultural heritage of respect and tolerance in her artwork and the hope that an inspiration of

togetherness binds us as human beings the early quaker families some whose names may be familiar to you the inns keeps the wills and evans help found eve shim and in the early 1700s quakers were questioning the idea of keeping slaves as an immoral act one incompatible with christian teachings by the end of the revolutionary war that idea took hold and quakers began to free their slaves historical records show that evesham quakers began to free their slaves at this time and one of the first freed slaves in 8 james mintus was a bricklayer and he built a home which still stands on the corner of main street and maple avenue by the 1800s quakers had established the first international human rights effort to abolish slavery and secretly began the underground railroad thomas evans was a station

master with three stations to hide and shelter runaway slaves in yvesham township our second place winner second grader soha kanjali's poem reflection to the future takes the imagery of being a slave on the run and projects it into the continuing racial struggles of the present for me demanding of the reader to live like we understand what that history teaches us the legendary still family an african-american family of yvesham now in al-shimong township whose parents were former slaves in maryland rose to fame and prominence starting in the 1840s some of you may have heard of dr james still also known as the black doctor of the pines but you may not know about his youngest brother william still who moved to philadelphia in 1847 and became a clerk for the under for the anti-slavery society corresponding

with the underground railroad network of station masters and eventually he and his wife made their home a station for runaway staves slaves by 1850. he began keeping meticulous records about every runaway slave who came through philadelphia including harriet tubman with whom he worked closely his legacy publishing the underground railroad records in 1872 earned him the moniker the father of the underground railroad williams still is the subject of the beautiful artwork created by our grand prize winner 8th grader maya cricht because the quakers of west jersey created a culture of tolerance and respect it was the perfect place for jews escaping the pogroms being carried out in eastern europe and russia during the 1880s successful farming communities were established to provide a new life in cumberland gloucester and salem counties our third place winner 6th grader

joyce lee's work illustrates the foundational strength in the diversity of cultures and races upon which american society rests the friends of the black run preserve is grateful to the eevsham township school district and its support and its middle school students who have helped tell some of our history next saturday their artwork will be on put on permanent display in the black run preserve and they will receive their awards their artwork will be placed alongside of a plaque recognizing the evans family who owned the thirteen hundred acres of pristine pine barrens known as the black run today for over one hundred years they were the original stewards of this land after the lenie lenape of course and that task has been passed to the friends of the black run we hope you'll visit the black run

preserve to to enjoy its trails and peaceful beauty and perhaps you'll reflect upon the legacy of peace that's part of this land and a vision to recreate that early recognition of human rights which these young artists are helping us to in helping inspire thank you so much for all your support thank you thank you mr volpe that was fantastic i'm so glad you shared your words with us about the background of the project i mean that's the it's conception it's just so original to this area and um i think uh you built it and and the folks that were working with you built it and obviously our students came with their creative ideas and it's just um rest your breath doesn't it to look at the uh the evocativeness of the pieces so let's see

let's meet our artists um and uh so um we'll start with fourth place which is edielle lowry from sixth sixth grade to macy she's here okay and then um third place was joyce lee sixth grade martin middle i think he's got it and it's pretty obvious to everybody at this point right that joyce is also a math winner as well so congratulations perfect perfect um and then second place was uh soha kanjali she's here and then first place the grand prize winner was amaya crete she's here [Music] and um and i so will do picture joyce and mr wilbo you want to come up please and anybody from your committee that is here with you too um and then mr hoffman would you would you care to come up and mr our board member was

actually involved in the development of the contest and the selection of the winners i would say going back to august probably so um so why don't you that's it yeah that's that's our last uh student recognition so at this point um everyone is welcome to stay for the drearier business of a board meeting but if you'd like to depart for more exciting activities elsewhere please feel free and thanks again to all the students for all your hard work [Applause] he's been [Music] all right [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] do [Music] so [Music] and we are reconvening after our small small break from presentations so we will at this point in time be going into our regularly scheduled portions of our board of education meeting at this point in time we're going to

open it up for public comment for agenda items only this meeting will now be open to the public referencing agenda items only however if your questions or comments pertain to litigation student or personnel items or negotiations we'd ask you to see the superintendent after the meeting since we do not discuss these matters in public please limit your comments the three minutes per person anybody got any agenda issues seeing none i will close that portion of the floor all right moving to item six approval of the minutes i need a motion to prove items six one through six three do i have a motion motion by miss null second if i miss capello any questions or comments pertaining to the minutes seeing none let's go to a roll call please this is capello yes this is

everhart yes mr pizzacaro yes miss fleming yes yes mr megan yes this is ryan yes motion carries thank you moving now to item 7 superintendents report and administrative items i need a motion to approve items seven one through seven seven do i have a motion motion capela seconded by miss ryan uh before we go into questions and comments i give the floor to dr smith thank you mr pizzacaro um i would like to share a few comments tonight regarding school's update and budget update regarding schools each week brings more points of light as we return to life as we knew it before the pandemic fifth grade events eighth grade events lead graduations field days eighth grade graduations planning and preparing for these events and more is well underway and though they will look a bit

different than in years past the most important thing they are taking place and more information will be shared about them in the days ahead today also happens to be bus driver and bus aid appreciation day we have an incredible group of bus drivers and bus aides and i just want to take a moment to recognize the hard work and dedication that they put in all year long during this very challenging time of the pandemic you'll notice in the program and the agenda tonight the approval of a new program which is at no cost to our district whereby uh evesham township police department community police officers will be spending time and mentoring um at our ecc program in the afternoons and joining in with the students there for games and activities as a way of building

connections with our students we're very excited about this new program and um so you know it seems especially appropriate also that it was national police week this month so um you know prepping that program this month is um especially well timed and appropriate we're so appreciative of the teamwork and support from our evesham police department led by chief chris chu also do you want to mention that it is asian pacific american heritage month this month which is especially important given there have been recent acts of violence directed towards americans of asian pacific heritage nationwide and i just want to reaffirm that here in our district the new township school district we recognize and value and lift up all our students everyone with respect and appreciation of our different cultures our differences and commonalities um which

enrich us which enrich us all and i'd like to spotlight that our board member anish kanthan is the first asian american board member on the board in the history of the board i believe and um and also i think the first asian american elected official in our town's history and um so you know it being asian american pacific heritage month i just want to [Applause] a word that if i was going to play a free association game with mr kent then the word that comes to mind first is selfless so and so it seems uh particularly appropriate to highlight him as he enjoys it so much so in a budget update i am very very very pleased to announce that on monday which will be forever known perhaps as miracle monday uh the new jersey

department of education released the final allotments of the sr-3 relief money for school districts and our district which had been earmarked to receive nine hundred and ten thousand dollars is now in fact going to receive over double that amount i'm gonna say every number two million one hundred ninety three thousand two hundred and seventy six dollars over double what we originally were to receive so we will be using 600 000 of that additional money to preserve the regular hours and health benefits for our 48 paraprofessionals whose benefits were slated to expire on january 1st of 2022 thereby maintaining those benefits throughout all of the 21 22 school year and um it's it's just um such a relief i think for for everyone involved most of all for our valued paraprofessionals to be able to say

that and have that certainty um through this next year and i just want to thank everyone who's been involved all along the way and sharing their voices both from the work of our finance committee and board to etea our paraprofessionals who have um you know spoken up and shared about their thoughts and how this affects them um and uh you know that of all the points of light this week that seems to burn the brightest so um in a nutshell across all our schools and our budget um a constellation of points of light this week thank you mr physical thank you dr smith any questions or comments pertaining to superintendents report administrative items ms noel i just i i wanted to say that i was so happy to see dr smith 7.4 the police department

mentoring program i was very happy i think that's wonderful and um because i see the impact that those relationships can have my son is a fifth grader and he's currently in lead and he came home today and said that um officer kinner has been talking about this activity and i want to do it mom i want to do it and he gave me the application and it's for the junior police academy so officer kenner really made an impact on him so you know that's an example of how this can have a positive outcome so very happy to see this tonight awesome thanks miss know mr lanzalata thank you mr fitzgerald um i wanted to just say thank you to all of the all the people out there in our school district who called wrote emails

uh to the legislators and to anyone that in in public office that would listen you know during this this financial crisis that we had um i don't know what caused the double in sr2 money or sr3 money but i have to think that it's because of the advocacy of our school district that it may have something to do with it so thank you to all those who participated and wrote the letters and called and just were resilient to their uh to to the people in office thank you oh and one other thing i apologize i'd also like to thank dr smith who despite many many emails trashing him and being very inconsiderate gave up his raise next year um i think that was a noble thing to do um considering the budget crisis that we

are up against and just it shows a lot about your character we're lucky to have you thank you any questions or comments i'll i'll just say that um you know all the years that i've been doing this i melissa do you have a comment thank you i just wanted to also um double up on uh mr lanzalotta's uh praise of everyone that did call in wrote emails supported us getting more money for our budgets to continue the quality education services that we do provide and also again to dr smith who were being very noble and generous to help aid in this budget crisis by donating the salary portion that he did thank you very much thank you miss fleming i'm just going to say that times that i've been doing this uh usually i'm highly

disappointed by the numbers that get reduced from our budget i usually get disappointed because somewhere along the way money's being taken away from us and when when this news broke on monday i i took a double take i i i couldn't believe it it was the first time that i could remember since i've been doing this that that uh that something went in our favor that dramatically um so i'm i for those who who've made those decisions who who saved many people and and saved many hours and i i don't know who who made that decision all the way up there but if for some reason you're listening thank you man i appreciate that i think everybody here appreciates that um yeah miracle monday is a great way to put it for us it felt

like a miracle so i'm very very very grateful whoever made that decision all right let's go to a uh a roll call please this is cappello yes this is everhart yes mr fizzy carol yes miss fleming yes mr captain yes mrs noll yes mr lanzalada yes mr megan yes mrs ryan yes mission carries thank you moving tonight item number eight curriculum and instruction i need a motion to prove items eight one through eight four do i have a motion motion by mr kadam uh seconded by mr lanzalotta miss filming i'll give you the third any questions or comments pertaining to curriculum and instruction okay um quick brief updates about curriculum in the last month um planning is underway for the safe return plan uh last year we had the road back and this year we

have safe return plans so that is underway um the guidelines have not been released but hopefully we don't have to go through the 16 different committees and we can be a bit more smooth because our students are already back in school um sr2 funding was submitted a quick i guess reprise of the sr2 money we were able to pay off our ionizer lease we upgraded the wireless access point system um and then there's also the mental health grant and then the learning acceleration grant so with the mental health grant we're able to install sensory pathways in our schools if you guys don't know what that is stop me after the meeting or mrs mcgulick they're awesome as well as contracted services for a school psychologist which is cool too and then from learning acceleration grant

we were able to do the summer learning academies and the extended school year experiences for our students so between all the different summer programs i think every grade and and every level is represented which is great um and then last update is our summer reading theme for this year is be kind we do not have the books yet that process is still going on with the media specialist but next month we should be able to announce the books as well thank you sir any other questions or comments pretending to curriculum in instruction seeing none let's go to a roll call please this is capello yes this is everhart yes mr fizzagaro yes miss fleming yes mr canton yes mrs noll yes mr lancelata yes mr megan yes this is ryan yes motion carries thank you

all right moving to item number nine finance and operations i need a motion to approve items nine one through nine getting there nine thirty and do i have a motion by miss fleming uh do i have a second second by mr canton any uh questions or comments pertaining to finance and operations miss everhart so i was uh interested in just a brief discussion on the dune the items that are under the donation section um thank you to everyone who donated to the mms tier 3 aquaponics pond but as a previous mustang i guess i want to know what that is if someone could could just elaborate anybody in the room can uh is is this i mean it's part of their science for the tier 3 science program just is this the first time please

mr hoffman go ahead thank you you're welcome so this is through our tier three program and um aquaponics is a um ecosystem in which food is produced with using nutrients from a pond pumped up through fish are in there so it is truly a whole ecosystem with the purpose of being self-sustaining and producing food am i allowed to continue a dialogue i ask a question okay so you matter yes that sounds really cool so where when would that begin with the new school year or now and where where is it so we actually have that it's not an outdoor thing it's more self-contained so it's using two large aquariums those things were part of the donation those items were and it's functioning now i have not eaten lunch from it yet but i do look

forward to but it is functioning now the system is working put in last week so we're hopeful that we get some um some produce from it last question and that is so would that be then maintained through the summer time oh very cool okay so so part of the the plan uh was that students needed to provide some sustainability through there so there's automatic feeders there's a cleaning cycle that has to occur there are specific species of fish and other aquatic life that will scour and clean and eat some of those waste products very cool thank you thank you pretty cool you're welcome thank you mr hoffman it's kind of exciting to have this kind of dialogue you know after the year we had that it's kind of reminiscent of the old days so thank

you very very encouraging thank you i don't think you've ever had that kind of conversation before [Laughter] any other questions or comments to mr hoffman or to anything on finance and operations seeing none let's go to a roll call please mrs cappello yes mrs everhart yes mr fizzyparrow yes miss fleming yes mr canton yes mrs noll yes to all except 9.4 board member travel i'll abstain since i'm listed on there okay mr lanzalada yes mr megan yes mrs ryan yes merchant carries right thank you moving to item 10 personnel need a motion to prove items 10 1 through 10 11. motion by mr lanzalata we have a second second by miss fleming all right great any questions or comments pertaining to personnel miss everhart okay i'm on a roll so um in true form i

want to say congratulations to those that are listed for retirement i do want to say a special shout out to mrs joy boom i seem to remember back in the day when mrs um barbara giovanni and myself went to bieler and went to see her technology lego exhibit thing that she had there where the students i think was it might have been an after-school club uh correct me if i'm wrong mrs mcluck i don't remember but um it was the coolest thing the kids were able to had two big lego tables and they were able to develop ways for these lego operated items to move and pick up and do something they had to do something these items had to move and pick something up it was the most fascinating thing i saw and the

exciting the excitement of the kids in the room and the teacher as well really great um and i've interacted with her over the years all these years i've been on the board so i wish her a lot of luck and enjoy your retirement also want to say a shout out to mrs molino who is retiring from my homeschool race so i want to wish her a lot of luck it's a great loss but i know you know she needs to move on to that second chapter so please those of you in the room that do know her please give her a shout out and say good luck thank you that's it for me thank you miss everhart any other questions or comments pertaining to personnel seeing none let's go to a roll call mrs cappello

willing to be uh sending an email and apology and just thankful be thankful for his graciousness and uh honor and taking care of his portion of what he could do to help our budget crisis thank you okay mr swimming thank you i'm sorry um this is open to public comment uh we can adjust the mic corrine halibura rice elementary school preschool especially paraprofessional i just wanted to say on behalf of all the paraprofessionals in the district we are so grateful that this relief money has come along and we are also so pleased and happy that you have all come to the agreement that you're going to reinstate our benefits and our hours so we so appreciate that and i just wish everyone a happy memorial day and enjoy time with your family and loved ones

her announcement uh miss miss capela uh absolutely go ahead thank you i just want to thank all the students especially the families the teachers the administrators who came out tonight to get that deserved recognition and even though they're only up on stage for a few moments and it is well deserved it does not even acknowledge that the minutes the hours the days that go into the preparation and i want to thank the students and the and the families again for for doing all that hard work and and they deserve extra applause for that it was great to see thank you miss ryan i actually have a question and um i'm hoping either dr smith or mr rashenti or mr donio could answer it i need to change my vote on 10 10 to abstain from

that because i have a family conflict so i don't really understand i just wanted to acknowledge it before i have it on the record i think you said you're abstaining i did 10-3 and but i mean i did um 10-7 but i also need to do 10-10. i'll defer to mr donio i'm sorry i apologize yeah i think that the minutes can reflect that were you to vote right now that you would have actually included an abstention it really should be recorded as yes because that's actually what occurred but that upon reflection i think that covers you from a okay thank you ethnic standpoint i apologize the name slipped by me sorry it's ryan it's okay thank you though thank you for your appreciate that mr shinty will reflect that i'm writing it down now

thank you appreciate that miss ryan we'll sleep better at night now um anybody else any more comments before the school board police arrest miss ryan just a few things i think we won't be here again until after the end of the school year that's correct okay so um just want to congratulate the graduates of the lead fifth grade um those ceremonies are happening in two weeks and then of course our eighth graders a big congratulations to all of them and exciting time for those families um and the other thing is maybe aneesh can or or celebration on i believe it's a saturday right june 19th but and where is that being held i think it's memorial three oh it's at the memorial park yeah from three to seven okay great so i'll make a note

of that and then we also have our golf outing right leah that's coming up in two mondays from now or okay so if anybody's interested i don't know if it's sold out but if you're interested um you can look on the eve sham education foundation website to sign up for that that's all i have thank you mr noll any other comments from board members mr catherine yeah um one down note and then one up note so the down note is um i wanted to thank everyone for for their advocacy but um we also have a budget crisis next year so whether it be the sos initiative whether it be parents calling teachers and staff i i encourage everyone to keep sending your emails because this year we were able to to get out of it

thanks to our elected leaders at higher offices than us but this is not over and we need to continue our advocacy the second item is a more uplifting note in the in the last couple of weeks we had a lot of events so whether it be meeting with dion to talk about diversity and equity in the school district i look forward to the juneteenth event that mrs knoll mentioned is along with their proposal in the book drive whether it be the marlton rec council reopening memorial one the the new turf field there um the aapi festival the diamonds that we had with mrc whatever it may be the the common denominator for all these events are kids um every single event we've been to has had a focus on kids and i think that strengthens

the idea that the best thing a society can do is is raise our kids so i just wanted to shout that out because that was pretty cool awesome thank you any announcements all right with that being said um i'm going to go for a motion to adjourn we have a motion motion by miss ryan seconded by miss knoll all in favor aye aye thank you melissa that broke the tie have a happy memorial day everyone take [Music] care [Music] be [Music] so [Applause] [Music] huh [Music] you
