Yep. Good. You have your phone, Cory? Of >> course I do. >> You photographer. >> Sure. of the United States and the Constitution of the State of Iowa and your ability to discharge the duties and school year after. [applause] >> Oh yeah. president. This time I will make nominations for president. [laughter] Is there any further nominations? Directors. >> Yes. >> Roberts. >> Yes. Second order is to electire nominations. They usually [laughter] never get out. >> If they vote no on themselves, that might be a very much. >> I would like to move on any else. That's not [laughter] true. [laughter] It's a hard Superintendent. >> Oh, so Will should come over. All right. Do you swear that you will support the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of Iowa and

that you will faithfully and impart to the best of your ability to discharge duties of the office of Vice President Are you okay to sit there for this meeting? First item for discussion in the board is Esther and the lonely status report. Well, >> good evening. >> All right, I'll do my best to keep short. >> Three minutes. >> That's all right. New new board. We'll give you a 10. I do think this month we will finally cross that finish line on Wednesday. I'm going to be working with Brian Pson to do some building and a couple pieces of confiration items that we need and as long as they have been this last month. I really do think we finally get over that finish line. So that's mainly forage outage here at February not able

to carry insurance. So we're just carrying their retainage till the end of the project just to make sure that anything would pop up or covered anticipated but we're trying to be safe. And then one piece of paper as we try to do a new project. >> So yeah, so as part of the project we kind of don't fully necessarily trust you guys. you're going to get it done. So part of the process is contract number used to be 5% but as I'm sure you guys are aware recently the law has changed that reducion $30,000 back again we keep that money until we know everything on the project has been fully Part of our job is we give the contemized list of everything that they should be doing as part of the project. They're building that

structural walls and we put 75% of walls and get paid for the materials and labors do. So we'll go since we're on project and confirm that's accurate and we'll see that% but now we're at the stage where we substantial completion every 100% all it's not quite there yet but then we keep to that 100% keep that% there's going to be things that are wrong. Usually it eas There's a lot of general practices. So we just want to make sure that you guys have otherwise everything% working condition when you turn it over to you so that way it's hopefully not because we're starting a new project. you know what's going to happen because there are times where you guys had your contract out and then back to the project they weren't able to complete some of

the last bits of their contract. So we stepped in on your guys and kind of took care of getting some of that work done so that could be done. We pulled that from their a little bit of it was from their original contract but changed since we pulled some of it from their extra cushion to help to protect the district from um save is much stage here on Wednesday. I'm hoping that there's supposed to be a fair amount of contractors and they're trying to get some of these last things done. I'm trying to help avoid that project. We're going to really hit it hard and try to get done as soon as we can. So, we'll see what all of this hardware. So, we got some outstanding issues. One item that hasn't been completed recently

was The rest of the conditions were installed. Um there's still three showers in the men's pool. Still not as soon as we get the shoulder room that has not arrived yet. Wednesday getting the roof curve set up. So that way even worst. Then as a reminder, we have the LED lighting placement that was schedually some of the rooms in our tal and then next summer we'll get the rest of the lights done. So that way every light fixture at the high school will be That is pretty much it. Um, working on closing up last bits of changes. Um, budget wise, we're still looking good. One is due to all the upgrades. One of them is a rebate of $71,000. That's continue to go towards getting some projected so that way a little Rob and members

of the maintenance staff meet some of the really key things that need to be addressed to make sure that we're getting things done that are actually [snorts] not great. We appreciate that. Any comments or questions or just a motion to approve that say? >> All those in favor say I. I. Any oppose? Any motion to pass. Thank you so much. That next up is the 25 26 board meeting. >> A sample of what we had last year. Um we typically meet on Mondays for the most part on the second and fourth Monday of the month. There occasionally is a conflict holiday or do concert. Um last year we had less meetings in the summer. It just felt like we ended up having to do a random meeting and try and find more members come. So

we had a few more meetings. You'll see there's only one in May. Part of that work around all of the senior activities and then the concerts, but then there's a meeting on June 1st and it's just one day after May. So there really is two meetings in May and two in June and then the second one in July. I think we put them in place also for our new August. higher date in there um the 10th try to catch them before they would start doing the new teachers would start all their new teacher training so that doesn't mean we may not have to do a random one on August 17th or 19th something but this year we were staffed pretty well by that time and Lacy and her department did a great job with principles

so we felt like the 10th is a good time because that would start our our new teachers would start doing all their stuff for everybody feel like there suggestions or somebody counter and saw something that didn't work right concert and if we have a short meeting 5:30 agenda and it only took an hour to get to sporting events and concert. Oh, this is 5:30. I don't hear anyone arguing about [laughter] >> May 11th is possibly we could start the meeting around the public. I like to that meeting on that day. We can also do our due diligence trying to make sure it not so many others. should be quick. It's almost contracts and hiring people. I have a motion for 26. >> All right. No comments or discussion. All those in favor say I. I.

Any oppos? Any motion passes. >> Board committee assignments. So we have had three as committes. It's important for us um to get feedback from the board before we get too far down the road. These committees are really important to us to help guide us in making decisions in committee facility committee about this. So it's important to have the board members there. They only usually meet uh I would say policy meet the most policy meets monthly um once probably three meetings a year maybe a fourth uh with the facility meeting just trying to keep what you're hearing us too because we can say what we're doing then you can also share that information to the public >> I think you took some ideas Um, Luke, what did she either way? I said to join him tonight

and >> I said I don't want this work out. Okay. So, according to >> Yes. Um but if there's already three of us to assist, right? Okay. [clears throat] Um so for policy will Marus and be on that number on curriculum will be um Olivia and finance Luke and then everyone else is here. I have threes and fives. So Luke is on there and then I have three threes. Okay. So Luke, Deb, is there anyone else? And then um the facilities would be Deb, Luke, and then um Will, Marus, and myself all have that number. facilities. You said the facilities one. Yep. And um so >> yeah and then will myself more or less also have that. So for facilities, I know that you know facilities and curriculum and all facilities and then um was

in Marus. Okay, we're good. Um I think everybody >> who would you say >> myself and then only have two ones we want >> [clears throat] >> Everybody is on everybody's on And everyone got one like multiples ofbody. >> Greg. looking back and making sure >> yeah what >> seemed to go a lot smoother than it has >> I did and it's like an official spreadsheet >> speak >> yes Amazon. That's right. So based off of the board committee assignments that the chosen in red have a motion to approve the committees as a sign. >> All those in favor say I. I. Any oppos? Any motion passes? The SBC request for English learners instruction. So the district does instruct learners and receives funding for first years of instruction. Recognizes that we will continue to educate

years. So allow us to request allow school for these students. Our discretion always can clarify the on that. They don't give us the money, but you would make that decision. >> Was that five or was that six? I thought it was six. Okay. Approve the request for English discussion. All those in favor say I. Any opposed? Any motion passes. So the request for allowable open this year October 1st uh as you recall our district's funding basically is here our funding for this current year is based upon last year's certified enrollment. Once again, we have students [clears throat] grow, state We had a little bit session. We talked about we had less kids. These are just new kids. Maybe a continuation is where we want it to be. We have the building request for now. Thank

you. Any comments or questions? All those in favor say I. I. Any oppos? Any motion passes. Medicating services. So the district has timber services. So they approached the district to contract contract. in the contract also. Any questions or comments? All those in favor say I. I. Any oppos? Any motion passes. The next up is Border Policy 104 R1 E1208 208 R1 502.07 507.02 507.05 607.02 708 802.2 804.5 is unable to be with us tonight and uh I know that discuss with policy committee within the first reading address question who the new board is the first reading any number of changes can happen between the first reading and the second reading if it's such a significant change then it just becomes a first reading again and then we bring it back to the next board meeting

for the second meeting but uh I remember just years ago the nerves of first reading and really that's you should feel that there's this one you can get feedback from the community yourself research you're doing and then you find opportunity for the second meeting that at the next meeting I addition information like table or change and it was a small change like that but if it's changing then it's just in timeline we will probably typically >> and a new policy side by side, right? And so you'll see the old policy and the new policy and just right right next to see what are their recommendations. You don't have to follow their policy completely think of lawyers [clears throat] pretty close. >> Yeah. the policy committee does um by word I know you had some questions

there but if there's something we can always discuss the second reading that one typally committee we meet the first Friday of the Y >> great policy committee will meet Friday. >> But yes, we'll talk about >> we'll we'll make sure it works. just typically wanted to put something on the books for once a month. It does not have to be Friday. It does not have to be. So, she'll email the finance part of that and the facility part of that would email and try to find time for you guys for all three members or two members at that point. So, the time memorial really like members there because we do want to be able to say yeah at that time it's just what the three current members I do motion to approve policies as read.

>> And thank you. >> Any comments? All those in favor of saying I post Any motion passes? University of Iowa affiliation with clinical experience nursing students. Good evening, Mr. Tory Johnson. >> Um, so this is a we often teaching students. We actually have a nursing student to liarian question of the first nursing student. All those in favor say I. >> I. Any opposing motion passes? >> Mr. Cory Johnson. >> Okay. So, uh, in the 2024 legislative changes to the truency laws, the American also some changes um, related to a school district's ability to enforce. One of those changes to our ability to to enforce Treny had to do with another option for students who are open to enforce code. Um if a student is considered to be who is open enrolled in is truent as

defined in another section of directors may the people who remain in the district and the district evening this is the first time stuff that allows it inreased focus and also thereased absentism, >> right? It would be chronic uh it would be 89% right it would be 89% and then% to be in order to be recommended for this student has to meet the threshold at least for any during a given school year 89% considered chronic and 20% is the next level which allows this and then this student is close to% we have to bring these we want to try to work but we also know it impacts our right notices many This is our first one by my time here. >> So we all we for this to just say that they were violation of the

code that was defined in this correct time. to contact me. >> Sounds like due diligence on the district side was done. So, thank you for doing that. >> Okay. So many another districts would have had this and probably five to six years ago where you could restrict your own house and so they would have not come for But it doesn't have to come to us in a >> business student. Thank you. Is there a second? >> Any other questions on this? All those in favor? Right. Does this have to >> be second? >> Yes. >> Anderson. >> Baker. >> Yes. motion passes. >> Thank you. [laughter] >> I never got multiple things. I guess I'll jump in with the Thanksgiving dinner. We are that's a truckation of the high school. I know the Thanksgiving lunch

uh that happen 11 to 2 have for multiple years here in Burlington and lucky enough. Yes, thank you. I spoke with Megan actually one time so the district is just by writing space. we were able to get a um an employee that is willing to come in and work in the food service area that day that one thing we're worried about of course we're paying on that person they are paying that person um and then we've got a couple custodians one will be open in the morning ready and closing in the evening about six hours of coverage for custodial they maintain a lot of great prior prior to this was the last time and so we we're thrilled to have that start back up and our facility can be used for that to provide the

need and so um free to stop by Thursday but I just wanted to let the community know that if they have a ton ready to go about that. Um, couple other things you may have um at the house torn down um just to the north of it. Um that's pretty much all the dirt was in today over there. That's our property now. We bought that property. So we're expanding that parking lot a little bit. Our discussion is to figure out whether we're just going to travel now later but nice piece of property for us. Not that we need to expand on that. We evaluate you know cost and what we do for the district to have our parking is so limited in that area as it is. I just want to give an update that

rents a good job of taking that leadership. Um happy to hear people come and talk about the course and childare because it is a tough situation. really forced that we can't use general funk to 12 general fun to help keep the child care center. It's a separate fund allowed to even if you would say hey transfer we're going to keep that thing open to take those dollars and move them over there. So, one of the things when I was at the board, you mentioned was talking to a lot of the superintendent about I'm looking for help guidance. What funds are you using your districts uh to make this work? Um we're following up now legally to say as a district that they could do that. Can we do it that way? Um we hate to

raise the cost and as we spoke about last week a lot of it was there were a ton of grants $5,000 grant year two it's 75 year 25 way these grants are designed it's about building community Um, so we're doing everything we can. Appreciate them. It has been something that has been really tough tough discussions for us. Um, and we would definitely want to spend some of that reason. So what we'll be looking for are just not as much as 10 years old. or two in the same category right now. comment when they're here because talk about that but it's a great time for me to just kind of keep you up to date as we are working on that the new fees going with our bids coming in for where we're at and we're

center being really under budget technically but it's 911 we are going to be able to move forward with Madison So we'll have an auction and we hope to have one. We're still financial student auction we will do before spring break. That's where they come in. It's not just buying a desk, it's tearing out and whatever, right? At that point, allow usually to have it taken out. That's a that's a soft timeline, but I just kind of update you now that we're getting to the point I told you before that I was waiting to see the project come back because I want to make sure we have enough dollars to finish that. You'll see more information coming on that Greg and are working set up auction. Most of our stuff is over there. Stuff is moved

out of the temporary storage project over here. We have stuff that needs a question. several times about utilizing the curtains of James and I believe we talked about this but it's not going to be possible for the new I'm not going to work with people because it's just that somebody else was looking auction desk and chairs things that are just They take out. >> Thank you for bringing that up. >> Yes. >> And we do know the park is extremely limited over there and so we do plan on using like the front grass area for some parking that will be okay for that. But Like when we did right on there, but sometimes we go on auctions and whatever you walk down the street to get there. So there's not a lot of parking because

um we're trying to make this prior to 6:00. It happened pretty close to 6:00 this morning. Um so recruitment will get out in the morning kind of take a look at what's happening. I'll hear from some of his bus drivers that are up early. They'll look in the areas because we have such a different area. We have people right in the city was thicker than what he was looking at this morning. So, but just always being a little bit extra if we would have been at 8:30 when our routes were getting started. That's a 2hour late start. They would start about 8:30. It was still pretty thick at that point. But just in your community, you know, we always on safe just because it is high school kids driving school and things that have the

darkness where it's at. Some of those kids are getting busy. >> It did not work this morning. >> I think that's because outage >> I think so. I believe that's I'm pretty sure there was 11:00 pick up and they were waiting must have already been there because they waited for 20 minutes and bus didn't come same time. Our phones are down. So message to all of our administrators and secretaries about an app that is web and so it's not like they're using their cell phone they start getting comfortable with it. You can't make anybody add it to their phone but it's an opportunity to get them but yes I do believe they're connected. start. They said that somebody division did something and took on that's our main wire that brings in everything. So that's kind

of something that we recognize. something change over this was not ours. Um um okay other things October 31st talked a little bit the last meeting you know successful we hosted all the mo county schools uh in here and um had here it was a great night we actually had feedback from the other districts that they thought it was seamless they love the facility and opportunity actually we're going to be hosting again next year because the other surrounding schools were like why would you not use your facility is Perfect. It's got the spray. It's got the parking. They have a nice area in the gym where we can get all that again next year on Friday. Good showing on giving us all those pancakes and I'm excited again next year. Amazing. February this month. You want

to something whe talented musicians there's an opportunity for you this month for sure and that teacher has everything that you have high school schedule. Okay, so last night I had schoolard credit really was a big part of this as far as push pushing forward and moving Right. It was a big thing for him. We talked about it several times. I want to give him credit because he just the things that he saw heard some staff and so um we are moving forward. One thing that came out of our article was that we absolutely move forward next year that we not move forward next year. We said that we would make a decision December 1st and that's where we're at because we're still collecting information about the high school. The reason is important. There's two different

parts of this process is one part is we have decides in a year and we're doing the block for the period day. They would sign up for 16 classes next year. So they made that decision later. We have to meet every class and then we have to start the whole process. So we need to know what classes they're choosing that happen all the eighth graders and nth graders by next year by February that if you think about that that's 60 classes or 800 something kids. Think about the volume of classes. Then we take those requests thousands of request and we decide okay we have 200 kids this class request request all March and April. February is more time having some conversations about the health schedule that is when we really have to have society to

know that we're going to go to 84 classes and this is when we're going to go so planning for juniors when they went how they would teach or we would want to know that they were going to be doing block schedule at that point because then we have time to say we've got four pas Basar meet with the union tomorrow talk to them that's our normal monthly meeting um but we kind of what you're looking at right now we're just think right In the middle of our school year, we have three months where a kid doesn't have English or three months where they don't have math or three months that they don't have science >> in the same way you do in the summer and we don't want we want to continue lack of instruction.

So that's one of the major reasons that we're looking at that schedule. So actually Nathan has been meeting with his high school high school has been meeting with his staff. He actually designed a new schedule today as a new sample for us to present to us. So, we're continented about what's student first, right? And student first, which is a big task. Um so we get those to you please follow myself with as much information as I can but again it's a pretty complicated process to do it so many times but we get 16 days and two days of five days of period or schedules or um lunch time. That's also stuff that's going to be worked out as we move forward. Um and uh I'm open to having more discussion when that comes when the

time finalized December 1st. That was the time I wanted to have all of our staff members have their time. I was I was good newspaper because I thought it was going to get the message out to the community which I wanted. So people would have been opportunity was there. It's a lot of work because we think it's best for kids. questionend or I can do it at the end of my opposition with success. not I have had some experience doing this kind of scheduling the elementary level. I did building wide. I also did district um elementary wide for special to create a successful schedule. And um I have a question of But you got to figure out what your your priority is um before you start making sure that they all fit. Um what classes

would be eliminated as the semester size in staff has been given the opportunity I know to already talk and feedback. Um I'm assuming they were listened to but did they understand the ramifications for their time class size for each plan to be successful? Most staff need to believe that it best suits the idea of better educational opportunities and they need to feel that they have had that they have been able to input into this decision. If scheduling is part of it, teachers need inservice on teaching strategies. We need to set them up to succeed. I believe that we don't always think we need to wait until the 27 28 school year problems with conflict staffing more time to develop daily schedule developing content and acceptance that this change should What kind of administration and finally

more time to this change will be a successful one. So I just I just feel like this time and then many times the more time you look at something improves each time we were just I struggle with that option because it just limits opportunity we would go down where kids would only choose um 14 classes instead of 18 which would limit over the course of their career 16 choices which is almost compl A lot of the range of 32 classes are happen to be core and then that's where we've had the additional classes. Now we're talking the elective classes and half would be the core. But that's I wanted to appate saying that I didn't say about the traditional just I don't know I would absolutely execute it if the board said to me heard

you want to go back to the traditional schedule and I would bring that back >> and I'm not making I just I just want to make sure issues all the issues that we work out before it's implemented out and I just think we have got more time I got to get on this topic. It would be helpful for me as a board member to look at workshop. I'm being coached with these questions already. So I mean I don't want to repeat sentiments but I definitely understand them and it might be helpful for us like this already. I would think that making sure we're making the right decision slow and deliberate. >> We do not have any with us um that feedback from Mr. and his staff that have come to him. So we can certainly

get that back to the three to speak up. Um it was shared with us twice because they added more to uh the three schedules that they're looking at right now. had a work session on December 1st and that was going to be kind of combination financial aber first set. We do need to do it soon, right? Here's where we're at. I know because the schedule, but I also know that you're here and conversations and information not a great superintendent, right? So, information I want you to meet with everybody right at the end of the day we want to do what's best if the case is I believe that 9 months is enough time for ready to teach it next year, >> right? >> So, in order to make these decisions and that sort of thing,

you're adding on top of what they're already They should if they're doing their job, they should be on top of it, which me just is a lot. And I just I want them to make sure they're able to do what they're supposed to be doing without stress. And then you spread the making that seems to be like first who actually decides we come down Why do I determine policies that you are going to pursue a lot of different with his right answer question. Okay. >> We had these discussions which I think would definitely be good to have you guys but he was very sincere that this could be accomplished in the amount of time that it would take to do this. Um, and I feel teachers are on board with this should know how to

do math. They know how to do each other. And you can right now this is her struggle. She has third level. So, um, same are >> decision not going to make everybody happy, but I think we're listening to what they're saying through that time >> and they come to something that we should for me and my kids just like your question. Who makes the decision? The way this decision is for the board to change it back to the power that you have as a you can say this is not forward. We're bringing policy by whatever right now that restricts my power right so that's why I'd rather I think work session sounds like a great idea we'll find a date something out to everybody that works and then weify I appreciate the discussion for keeping

us within boundaries of this like we are doing a lot of things processes and and your point is you can make the decision to switch but that doesn't mean that you are making two separate items. So there's a decision to move to semester and you're talking then there's a decision later. How does that work? What what are those fine details? >> Right. Right. Right. >> I like I think this is a good idea and I need >> I would say I've done this. session. >> Okay. Not just jumping to it, whatever. Greg, thank you for your hands back within the making decisions. And um my last I just want everybody to have a happy Thanksgiving. I know everybody is going to be rooting for hackers and so just [laughter] thank you >> to clarify for

the hot >> just to clarify [laughter] >> thank you. Is there any other questions from superintendent report? >> Okay. Reports very exciting news. Director for sending myself to the always really good to get motivated again. So, I appreciate that. I also first service worker um that will be here for Thanksgiving dinner. I think that was something that we needed to do and I'm really glad we were able to accomplish that. >> And I will say the school and the I'm sure the district would accept donations at any point in time and so if any were all in the but I And then after I think it goes to show that all people bring different things and the strength of those different abilities. I just thought that kind of a mini example. >> Thank you. been

here. [laughter] >> I just want to make a couple comments about the conference that we went up to there a little bit more than what I did earlier. So they were like that but they just they were doing things to really figure out what that It truly is. They just came up with some ways to imply that we are all in the really separate jobs that there's that we can help each other maybe to do that you're doing a great job with it but maybe a couple times a year that maybe the city manager council can come here and just kind of share some things with so I just like to see that collaboration continue and Just because I'm not sure that service appreciate all that and thank the district. Um, school board convention was

very informational. Um, a lot of great inspiring things and creative ideas. So, I appreciate the opportunity to go this year. Thankful as well as a brand new board member. I have found everybody that I've spoken in this district very staff has been so thankful for that thankful for the opportunity to be a part of this group. So, I'm really looking forward to learning a lot more and listening to the people in our community. I was just a lot of people have said I enjoyed the conference last week that was really helpful and really the number one takeaway for me was that our schools are strongest and our community is as engaged as they can be as they want to be. So, I appreciate the people who come out for public comment tonight. I know this

a little bit intimidating, but I think that right there is a really impactful place. And so my I guess encouragement tonight is for our community members to be listening to be engaged and to just show up because I think we as people genuinely want to hear from the community and we can't talk to so >> president of the performance better ratection people continue to meet for your opinions better. >> Thank you. I would agree. Um the conference is a lot of fun at this point. This is my second year because the area is just verying and with a lot of new and different perspectives. Um but but the main thing that I conference in my visiting and then I was with my president there a lot of boards do not have good conversations. They get

very heated walk out. They shut down. They don't talk. We were very very fortunate over the last four years to have a very understanding inclusive and I usable disagree. We are very fortunate to have that and I look forward that to continue.
