Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Hey. >> Good evening. And welcome to the fifth grade concert here at Antoine. I'm Mr. Palacky. I'm assistant principal here, and I'd like to thank you all for braving weather to come out to recognize your kids. A few things before we begin that I'd like to point out. Please silence or turn off all cell phones. Students have worked very hard this year, and I want to make sure that everybody's able to appreciate it without the distractions. Feel free to take as many photos or videos as you would like. The district is recording the event in the back, and we'll make it available on our YouTube channel. Our restrooms are located in the lobby, if the need arises, right across from uh the office. Without further ado, I'd like to get you
on with the show on behalf of our superintendent, Dr. Gentile, and the UA Public Schools Board of Education, please enjoy our concert, which will begin with the fifth grade band under the direction of Ms. Marston. >> [applause] >> Hello, everyone. Welcome to our fifth grade spring concert. It's so great to see all of our friends and family in to thank During our performance, we'd appreciate it if you could silence your phones, remain in your seats, and avoid talking while we are playing. Please and thank you. >> [applause] >> Tonight's concert will begin with the fifth grade band. The fifth grade spring concert is always a special night because we get to share how hard we've been working on our instruments the past 2 years. Our band class meets every Thursday and we've grown a lot.
>> [applause] >> The first song we'll be playing is Guantanamera by Victor Lopez. Guantanamera is a patriotic song from Cuba. The song was originally written in and has been recorded by many different artists. During During the Cuban Revolution, the song became popular and was used to share the importance of democracy. >> [applause] >> Latin music uses many different percussion instruments and may have you feeling like you want to get up and dance. This piece also uses call and response, which is when a singer or group plays a or sings a musical question and other and another singer, instrument, or group answers back with a musical response. It creates a musical conversation and helps makes the music exciting and fun. >> [applause] [music] [applause] >> As the weather gets warmer, more and more insects come out
of hibernation and buzz, crawl, and fly around. Whether you love them or hate them, bugs are important to our ecosystem to help pollinate crops and plants for us to eat. Birds, frogs, and fish eat bugs so they can survive. Creepy Crawlies by Michael Story will make you feel like bugs are scurrying, flying, and crawling all around the band. >> [applause] >> This was a very fun piece of music to rehearse and learn in band class. Our flutes and clarinets were challenged to learn fast and tricky melodies. Even if it was tricky at first, we practiced and worked hard to make the music sound great. You'll also hear our trumpet section use their mouthpiece to make a buzzing sound, which will remind you of a mosquito buzzing in your ear. Wow! Wow! >> [applause] >> Wow!
Wow! >> [music] [music] [applause] >> Last year in fourth grade band, we performed a piece called Dragon Dance. We wanted to take what we learned in fourth grade to a higher level and build on what we learned last year. Dragon Tamer is a very special piece of music that is mysterious, exciting, and epic. This was our favorite piece to play at and to taught us a lot about playing together as a group. Dragon Tamer will be the final song performed performed in fifth grade band. Thank you for joining us tonight. Next you will hear from orchestra and fifth grade chorus. >> [applause] >> Amen. >> [applause] >> Amen. Amen. >> [music] >> Amen. Amen. >> [music] >> Amen. Amen. >> [music] >> Amen. >> [music] >> Amen. Amen. >> [music] >> Amen. >> [music] >>
Amen. Amen. >> [music] >> Amen. >> [music] >> Amen. >> [music] >> Amen. >> [music] >> Amen. Amen. >> [music] [music] [applause] >> Thank you so much to everybody for braving the weather to come out tonight. To those of you that do not know me, my name is Miss Mary and I have the awesome pleasure of teaching these super great fifth graders. This group in particular has been such a pleasure to work with both in fourth and fifth grade. There is so much talent in this group and I'm so excited to see all the great things that they're going to do next year and beyond. We're going to do a very quick transition to get our orchestra students on. So, if you could just bear with us one moment, we have a quick transition. Thank
you. >> [applause] [applause] >> Next on our program tonight is Ann Jaws fifth grade orchestra. Our group meets every Wednesday and is made up of violins, violas, and cellos. This year we've improved a lot on our instruments and are really excited to share our hard work with you. The pieces we've chosen to play for you tonight are all very different, but interesting and exciting in their own way. >> [applause] [cheering] [applause] >> Samba is a lively style of music and dance from Brazil that is often played at parades and celebrations. It sounds fast and exciting with fun drum beats and rhythms that make you want to dance and move your feet. Samba La Bamba was a fun piece to learn in orchestra. >> [applause] >> Percussionists from the fifth grade band will be joining us
for this piece. You will hear Latin percussion instruments including claves and maracas. >> [applause] >> I see you. I see you. >> [music] >> I see you. I see you. >> [music] >> I see you. I see you. >> [applause] >> Flying above the clouds by Michael Giacchino is about the first moments of flight, when a plane lifts off and everything starts to look and feel different. The song focuses on the feeling of leaving the ground behind and starting an exciting new journey. >> [applause] >> Something special about this piece
is that each section in the orchestra gets a chance to play the melody or main idea of the song. This song was a big challenge for us when we first started learning it, but we worked hard and made it sound great. >> [applause] >> This piece taught us how to slur with our bows, play new notes, and use dynamics to make the music sound interesting. We really enjoyed playing this piece in class with the harmony or different notes teacher to play. >> [applause] [music] [applause] >> Randall Standers, the composer of Shiver, wrote this to describe our next song, Shiver. Imagine you're walking in the dark, the wind whispers across fallen leaves. Distant sounds echoes echo across a midnight landscape. The cold sends an icy fingers dancing up your spine to rest on the nape of
your neck. You begin to shiver. >> [applause] >> Our orchestra will be using a special technique called tremolo in this song. Tremolos are played by moving our bow very quickly to make a trembling sound. >> [applause] >> We like to thank our families and teachers for supporting us in playing instruments and coming to our concert tonight. We hope you have a happy and safe school year and start to your summer. Thank you. >> [applause] [music] [applause] [cheering] [applause] >> All right, these students have been such a pleasure to work with as well. Um before I hand over the microphone to Mrs. Davidson and we get going with the choral portion of tonight's program. Um, there are so many important people I need to thank who make uh, the arts so alive and well in Ewing. Um, first I'd like to thank our building administration, Mr. Harrison, Mr. Maleki, Ms. Rodriguez, our office and custodial staff as well as our district staff, uh, Dr. Gentile, Dr. Bogus, uh, Mr. Miss Lynn who's here tonight, um, and our entire Board of Education who's able to keep these awesome programs running for these students. I also want to give a big shout out to Mrs. Brindle and Ms. Vento. They had an
awesome display of art out front. So, if you didn't get a chance to take a look at that, please get a chance to do so. I need to thank our fourth and fifth grade teachers, um, for not only being so flexible and accommodating, but also so supportive of these students. Many of them are here tonight. So, thank you guys if you're watching me on the stream for everything you're doing both behind the stage and in the back of the room. Thank you. Um, I need to give a big shout out to Mrs. Davidson. I'm not sure if she can hear me right now. 013done in their choral portion of their concert. Um, finally, I believe there is a PTO fundraiser at Rita's tonight. Um, and I don't know if you know know this, these students have had a rough couple weeks with NJSLA testing, have worked really hard tonight. I think they all deserve some Rita's Italian ice or ice cream. So, little plug there. You guys can bother your families about that when we're done. Um, we're going to do a quick transition and get our chorus students up here. Thank you. >> [applause] [crying] >> Let's go, Warriors! >> Good evening, and welcome to the core section of our spring concert. Besides the instruments and singing, we hope that you take the time to enjoy our artwork that is displayed in the lobby. Thank you to our art teachers, Ms. Brendel
and Ms. Vento. >> [applause] >> Our chorus selections tonight are very different from each other. We worked on the different moods that music itself has and how to perform them. Each song will we will be singing will have a different feel to it and some of our songs we chose ourselves to sing. >> [cheering] [applause] >> Our first song is a traditional one and it's very patriotic. Would you please stand and join us in our national anthem, The Star Spangled Banner, written by Francis Scott Key. Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early >> [singing] >> What so proudly at the twilight's last >> [singing] >> whose broad through the perilous >> [singing] >> O'er the we watched were so gallantly And the rockets' the bombs Gave proof through the that our was still

piece is titled Bondwa. While the song is very lively, the translation is rather different. When we translate it to English, it means little girl, don't cry. >> [applause] [crying] >> Bondwa, Bondwa, Bondwa yo. Bondwa, Bondwa yo. Bondwa, >> [singing] >> Bondwa, Bondwa yo. Bondwa, Bondwa, Bondwa yo. Alanamedia Bondwa. Alanamedia Bondwa. Alanamedia >> [singing] [singing] [applause] [cheering] >> Why is known for many things, one of which is the very own singer who goes by Israel. While we lost him many years ago due to many health issues, he lives on in his music. This is his version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow, first made famous by Judy Garland in the movie The Wizard of Oz. >> [applause] [music] >> Ooh. Ooh. Ooh. Here's The Bare Necessities. >> [applause and cheering] >> Look for the bare necessities, the simple bare necessities. Forget about your worries and your strife. I need the bare necessities of Mother Nature. >> [singing] [singing] [music] [singing] [applause] >> Our concert is now coming to an end.
