okay good evening we will call the regular regularly scheduled uh meeting of the Atlantic Community School District Board of Directors to order and have the rooll call please Jenny Jordan yes La mle here Josh mlar yes yes Jody G yes okay and in your agenda under the consent items you we did have one additional uh resignation that was added it's in your packet so if I could have an amendment to the agenda to that I'll move to approve the consent agenda as amended second good Laura mlan yes Josh McLaren yes chrisy p yes Jody Goodridge yes Jenny Jordan yes I don't see anybody here for public comments so we will move on to our presentations um we do have two presentations tonight and I think um Mr Anderson you're first our uh director of transportation
and our transportation update thank you very much appreciate well uh since this is my first time presenting to the board I thought I would just start with some basics about Transportation uh to talk about our fleets and things that we have our routes um so our transportation department this myself we have a full-time meic who does a great job course we have 19 regular drivers that's both class B Big Bus and show first li or smaller vehicles and we have 12 active substitutes between Paris and and other drivers I will note here here I can always use of those we operate 27 Vehicles that's 16 buses s SUVs and four cars eight of our buses are designed to be daily route drivers those pick it up and takeing kids home to and from school we
have three buses that are specific for activity trips two those are bigger uh rear diesel pushers and then we have five other buses which tend to be our older buses that are either used for activity um or for backup when we're working on our current route buses of all of our buses the yellow buses 10 of them run on propane uh we have one that runs on gas that's our smaller Mini Bus and we have five diesels the general education students qualify for school busing to and from school if they reside more than 10 miles sorry 10 I think two miles from the school that they attend if they're Elementary or middle school three miles for high school um the distri requirement however is waved for qualified special education students those attending the Early Learning
Center uh or the link CC EOC students I wanted to bring uh our district route map which believe it or not um we didn't even have an electronic mat before I came uh people that were here did it very well before but I'm a person that needs to be able to have an electronic so each different color is a different bus route um and we do go north of the interstate and uh we pull from near pop County over here to where the district sticks out and um we go as far south as 92 to get some so um if you want to scroll in on of course that's where that's where we have the majority uh some of these are special ed students some are going to be early learning but if you want
to look this these down here South Palm other places Country Club he's qualifying at two miles away from school so we do pick up some students this tends to be more of a take-home situation because a lot of students don't want to be ready to get go to school at 710 or whatever they're being picked up up they are in we have same for Highland Edition um but you if anyone wants to see a particular part this is uh something that I can share with the board I don't keep it Public public because I don't want anyone to be able to track where our buses are going at any time but this is what what we use um each driver they obviously learn their own route but what I will use for new drivers sometime
until we get a good routing software is um if they want to take tablet they can take their individual route and and use that to to go so um on our a regular y bus routes we transport about 274 students in the AM and 230 in the PM that does include Early Learning Center CCC and Link Center students uh we also transport another 150 to 200 students in the afternoon from both Washington to middle school and the middle school to the high school call that transfer students so they can get on a bus and go to either one of the schools um if they didn't want to walk so uh we have seven daily Class B bus reps just big buses um the mini bus runs essentially all day it has an AM PM it
is essentially running over noon as well suring the link center C you'll see it's uh we have a lot of back and forth going to the high SCH back out there we also have three car SL Suburban daily routes um those typically go out of town but we use our Suburbans in the case when our buses get full which is more typical with our smaller yellow bus sometimes we have to augment and have another sub and follow them around we have more people get on that for us uh not all students of course ride every day uh but we do every morning get up prepared for them all to be on the bus so we have to have that capacity my earliest driver leaves around 6:00 a.m. and the first yellow bus goes out just
little before 6:30 to get everyone school by 8 uh we obviously appreciate it very much when parents have their students ready when we arrive uh when they don't it puts everything behind um when the butts arrives we like to say that they should be ready not start to get ready when they see the flashing um yellows but uh we also appreciate when they contact us via phone text email whatever to let us know when their students are and AR up writing we have some that are on whe call that we don't expect to hear from every day but we do for the ones our regular runs so much easier to that we've had several weather cancellations um this this year and I wanted to talk a little bit more uh about when we had to
go to hard Services only that did impact five uh of our routes pretty heavily um but we were able to I'd like to have that option I think we had six days of hard surfice only where the roads were just impassible you can maybe get thr on a car but the last thing we want to do is get a bus stuck in a place that it shouldn't be full of kids on a cold day so um well I hope we're done with the snow we haven't really went spring we might need another day or two as these uh County roads are that we get get cared for so Steve yeah so then in that case our parents both mostly like driving their kids out to a hard service location and about how far are they
usually going none of them should have to really go more than a mile except for these out here this is a this is a Six Mile Stretch to get well this is right here it's a mile south and then you got to go four miles to get to this pave road that one is pretty far um these were meeting us up here on Airport Road so this one was by far the farthest the ones that we have north of the interstate here you know we could there were some that didn't have to go very far at all this one is a couple it's not a direct route but we could meet it at the valley the valley was a good pickup spot for these folks here this one luckily enough we were able to didn't
have too many off this is the paved elorn Road and several here in Marne so we had several come to Mar for that kind of thing it you know it is a pain for the parents to have to get up and do that but it's still a better option especially if you work in W it to take your kids to Marty as opposed to bring them all the way in uh we did have a few that were U there were snowbound and didn't you know had to go scho remotely they weren't able to get out so did most of them take advantage then of pick up locations or did they just go ahead and run their kid in I would say in the afternoon more tended to pick up their kids than in the morning
because it was it was a little harder to get up and wait like say along 71 you know these individuals of course we've been here these at here it just kind of depends on the age and where the parents you know they were working outside the home where they're coming from we did have some uh either go to go to the Y or whatever until they could course again it wasn't something that we really look forward to doing we obviously would rather get them right to and from home but it is a good option for us as opposed to having cancelling all transportation for us to be able at least get safely to someplace closer together any other questions about that or heart Sol um next thing is in addition of our routes of course
we do a lot of activities uh we provide transportation for any number of activities from all buildings um they originate everywhere the last week for example we 27 uh different activity trips consistently average over 20 activities week that number of course can vary greatly by season so I wanted to bring a spreadsheet that I share with all drivers and those that do a lot of activities the ones the coaches set up obviously um Andy and I spent a lot of time on this as well that will show obviously the date the time and end of the activity if we know destination special instruction so that we know what um uh what we're going to need and most of this information I I put it all in myself but it is drawn from B which I
know you've all heard about um I do still use another staff request um until staff request on the school website for transportation um but that's because not everyone knows how to use found yet send to Mr for that so just a quick example this is something that I allow um anyone to have uh view access to because it allows my Subs who don't come in every time to look forward and see of something that they'd like to do excuse if it's crossed out it means that it was on the board but it was cancelled for any particular reason but if we get down to one here we have uh Speech going to walki on walk Northwest High School the colors over here mean that I haven't assigned a vehicle yet once I assign a vehicle
that's the one that's going to go a driver and then if that driver is going to be gone during the day either anytime after 8 or before our afternoon routes I'm going to need a sub for that driver unless the driver is in fact already the sub if that makes sense route drivers do get first crack at activities because I want them to be able to have access to that uh and I'm always looking for more substitutes are willing to come in and do a route in addition to activities so I have this all the way out through June for any activities that we know about obviously other things keep coming in um in that time but this is what we use for for that if you came out to the bus garage you'd still
see that there's two trusty whiteboards that look very similar to this don't have quite all the information but that's how it's always been done at the bus garage so for now they're still there but the information on that Ward is coming right off of here so any questions on activities um just some fun facts we drove 208 626 route miles last year over 990,000 activity miles and about 13,000 administrat miles um we did that in our current Fleet which ranges in miles from 12,500 on the low end to 213,000 on the high end the average mileage for the all active Vehicles is just over 100,000 102,000 Patrol vehicles in fact above 100,000 and 15 are at or below our biggest capacity buses will hold 82 but more like 50 more comfortably 82 is free in
a seat 54 is still prettyy B uh our regular size um buses well we have a or 65s will hold 42 again two seats unless you're taking Littles and then you can get the full the full 65 in there we have a 77 passenger bus and of course I mentioned the 12 passenger bus for us one thing that it just happened uh that I'm glad to be done with this our semiannual inspection happens uh uh twice a year of course from from the Department of Education assisted by the Iowa State Patrol they come out and uh inspect all of our vehicles test everything on the vehicles lights everything um and we were fortunate uh for that all 27 of our vehicles were kept in service they had some 30-day things that we had to take
care of like lights uh but they're always going to find something so we're super happy that only we only had four of those things that were that and none taken out of service for the first time that I I mean I've only been there a year but we were able to add a vehicle to the fleet that had failed uh last fall so we picked up an older Suburban that we were able to take care of some sensor issues on so we're we're happy to have uh those back back in service so and that was just yeah that was last week in 29th so pleased with that uh any any questions on do you have a kind of a comprehensive document like that that you could share with us that shows like data service of
the fleet what we've got l in here they not actually it doesn't have to be if you just send that to us so that we can see but the the main thing that we use that's not really respond but yes I I can do that so you can have the ages you know are oldest current active Vehicles we have uh we have a 2008 Suburban oh we still the one that we got back was a 2001 sub 2009 are some of our older we call the triplets there's three diesel regular size bushes are two big diesel pushers one is 11 years old one is 10 years old so yeah it just gives us an idea of what's coming up for C and if it's got mileage on it I figured based on what we do
and what we use to maintain and you figure you know useable life we need to get 1.7 buses SL Vehicles a year the last one we bought was in 2023 we got the 77 passenger propane activity bus we're probably going to need to get another activity bus we should think about uh a route bus as well one thing I want to bring up that we haven't done here before that other districts have had good success with is possibly leing buses um it's less it's less cash out at the beginning and you're essentially just paying for the the ca as goes through and by the time you're done that useful life is up anyhow then we're not dealing we're not putting the money that currently put into the older buses to I'm just saying that's an
option yeah we'd be willing to look at that if you bring us proposals and show us numbers could you talk a little bit about um seat bels on buses yeah so of the buses that we have I've got one two three four in the Little Bus five have seat belts on them if the seat belts are on there we do encourage the students to use them now of course if they're Early Learning Center or um special a that is one thing that we do make sure that they're buckled in that is not an option for them to not wear their seat belts but the rule is that if you have seat belts they should wear them um but it's hard for a bus driver they can make sure that everything is clicked in it's harder
unless you see that child or student moving around to ensure that they still have that seat belt on all the buses what are we doing on our cameras on our buses yeah so um none of the cameras that we have are like Wi-Fi you have to go pull the hard drive but they are functional and I use them regularly so it's a because as you can guess dis to be a problem and it's nice to uh have some video proof of what happened to be able to address things uh the I probably use that when I pull the video half time half the time is for student behavior on the bus the other half is for inappropriate drivers on the outside of the bus when everybody stops and we turn those into authorities where be
sherff or local and they do a pretty good job making sure that that does happen questions on the cameras there anything so far um one thing I wanted to mention that I'm uh be looking forward to uh is you know continued competitive compensation for our drivers especially when compared to other other districts I'm not going to Advocate one way or the other but it's um one thing that would help considerably is we currently do wait time when we go to activity trip and uh most other schools do not if one pay and that that would be beneficial as well about that you ask but I'm going to Pro that my opinion I also want to continue to recruit class B licensed drivers and let everyone know that we are certified elt trainer which means that
we can take someone who's getting their class Fe license for the first time and get them up to speed uh with an approved training that we have at no charge to the app now it isn't open to the public it's open for our applicants but it is an option that we can run them through it I haven't done that in the near well you know nine months that I've been here anyone that I've hired has already had their class Fe which is really great if you can get someone like that the individual that you approved with a consent agenda today does not have his class B but he's joining with the shers license with intent to get his class fee so he might be our first one in class we your h so how is
your Staffing in general I know you mentioned you're always looking for Subs sure are you also always looking for well right now all of our current routes bus routes are covered uh however and I'm not going to uh throw shade at anyone we tend to attract those that maybe have already retired from a previous career and as they get my age and older sometimes they need more time offer we have other issues so yes having qualified Subs willing to step in and do that or Subs to cover routes while our regular drivers go out on activities that's uh that's yes I would take uh three more class B drivers today that would help fill the with needs and especially we're not we're not at our busiest activity when we get spring and we have track
tennis golf everything going all different directions soccer U there's need for more for more drivers because the last thing we want to do is not be able to provide that Transportation du to La first what are your uh goals for I don't know the rest of this year sure sure one of the things uh when I interviewed that I had looked at and that I want and I'm still continuing to research is to be able to get not only routing software all of this is routed by by hand when I do it and that's fine that's always how it's been done here but having routing software would allow this uh to be more efficient electronically when I had a delivery business I used routing software and it could put a 100 stops in a row
and tell you where to go next I'd like that more importantly with most routing software the thing that I found in the last nine months as I research it most important is a parent portal where the parents can track where the bus is when their kid gets to school or more importantly they know the bus is coming they can get an alert that it'll be there in a minute or so be outside don't wait for the flashing lights show up so it's a it's a good security thing too as well because you know I know most phones have you know find my child on it or whatever but it's nice that they can know when the buses arrived and they've been dropped off or on an activity thing they could know when that person has
arrived at activity it's the the parent portal for me would cut down on so much um extra effort you know I I'll answer the phone all day sometimes but it's if someone could text or go through the parent portal my child is not riding today he's ill she is ill I would be able to know that right away to automatically take that person off the route and then make it more efficient so that we don't even have to stop there and the the routing and tracking stuff would have been out there long enough that there are some tried and true ones that have really worked some super amazing wonderful expense ones and some near perfect ones that work for us for l any other questions on that or anything about Transportation thank you very much
thank you I appreciate our next presentation is SK with IAD so this is Bri Atkins and Bri is our longest tenured iack student no veter person would speak to us about aack from a student perspective to Bri and I didn't have to ask her to do it she volunteered that was great thank you Bri so I'm gonna hand the podium over to Bri as Mr summer said I am Bri and today I will be talking about how I dragon is help me become a better person SL help me in school and how iack has helped me become a better person is Mr Su really teaches us about being other centered and helping others and he also teaches us how to have a growth mindset instead of a fixed mindset and basically he has really stepped
me out of my comfort zone which I really like because if you would have asked me a year ago when I first started I if I was going to talking for the school board I would have no and so this is really a big step out of my comfort zone and basically how Mr Summers has helped me schoolwise is he usually gives us one day a week usually Friday or usually when it comes to midterms usually a week and he gives us just to work on missing work um or work that we just had that day that we didn't quite get done and we also do a thing called community service and our most recent community service project was doing the clothing closet over there and it's just really helped me give back to my
community and I'm also a leader in I I am don't quite remember but um it has just really taught me how to be a leader and how to step up for what's right and like how to help others if like they're getting bullied or they're getting picked on on and how to like help stand up for them and just really a is just a really great class to take it also helps you like get a long job career like we do like internships apprenti ships and we usually have guest speakers that come in that are usually looking for those internships apprenticeships and basically he has been trying to help me get a job I finally did get a job so that was good and that's just basically it it just really helped me where are
you working KFC congratulation thank you any other questions tell us a little bit about the clothing closet the clothing closet is a closet for students who usually like get dress coded or something like if their like shirt is too short they usually could go in the clothing closet and grab a hoodie or a new shirt or something and before the St started working on the fo the closet it was a big mess like everything was thrown and everything so right now we actually have a bit organized we still got to do a little things to it but overall it's just organized more organized so it's easier for people to find things and yeah any other questions who's eligible for I um we are working well right now it's 11 10th through 12th grade we we're
working on getting freshman being able to join I that has been approved oh it has been approved so now like freshman to seniors can join and we do a lot of cool fun field trips like we do like I build my future one of my favorites personally and that one just like shows you that I build my future like different career options and it has like I mean who doesn't like freestyle I mean who does it and we also do like the DZ manufacturing trip we did that my sophomore year we also went to a leadership conference this year and last year it's basically for all the leaders because we have a blind election so that way it's not just based on popularity or who is the most prettiest or everything like that it's just
who has the best trade to become that leader and last year we had specific roles like we had like a president and then VPS all over but this year we did a president like a vice president parliamentarian secretary timekeeper and stuff like that so that's a lot different and may I jump in here this is why she didn't know what she's serving in because I'm doing something different I told him I think it's more important that everybody learn all of the roles because in community leadership positions you might have to serve some of these not just one of these and so we're rotating all the students who were elected as Leaders they're serving in different positions every month so they give all of those different experiences that's why she didn't know yeah because she had
heard from me saying oh this month you're serving is this Ro and basically last year like I was VP of civil and social awareness yeah civil and social awareness and it's just really taught me how to like step into that leader role because I'm usually I may seem very talkative like in school but like out of school I'm very shy and all that and basically it um basically me being that leader has really and me being with like a team has really shown showed me what it's like to be a leader and what Mr showers has t me everybody is basically a leader it's just they haven't realize that they're that particular leader yet and then another thing that we do is called CDC it's a competition that we do this year my group you
have to be 11th and 12th grade in order to do it and my group did a presentation on our project based learning which instead of like tests or homework we do a thing called Project based learning where we do like these like projects and we're still learning but instead of like all like the tests and the homework and everything like that and we still haven't found out yet who made it to State basically we just did theary and that's just basically the qualifier to see if he made it an estate and I think we find out who makes it to State on the 16 the 16th so basically fa teacher conferences and I is just a really fun class especially because I'm a teacher he's hilarious and he's just a really fun person to be
around and he's also to me he's not just a teacher he's also somebody that I go to to talk to about like if something was going on that day or if I had a bad day because he usually checks up on on his students and like he can usually tell if somebody's been having a bad day or they're just not their usual self and so I is just a really fun class it has really taught me a lot and yeah any questions well you did an excellent job thank you and you can tell the next person that comes to see it was pretty easy right thank you guys thank you you good job well now Bri covered everything yeah questions for for you Mrs pet asked me a great question last year I did not
have to it I know I'd be Inu if I didn't have the answer today so let me start with that you asked me about stats or data points on rates that actually proove and improve okay so I only had 19 and I last which is low um but of the 19 12 of the 19 had and showed academic Improvement as evidence by the GPA now I think the more important point is what the data doesn't show and that's what I'm going to share with you next last semester I had 36 fs and I in October well I should say not an i out of all of those 19 students there were 36 Fs in all the other classes that not so that was October and I told him that is a house fire we're making
changes because this is not acceptable for your future or for me um so this is where we ended up at the end of the semester at uh the end of the semester we had s fs and we had 22 D's oh I forgot to mention we had the 32fs and 4 DS in October so we ended with 7 FS as compared to 32 and we end up with 22ds as compared to four so I would love to say that everything was the see and above but I told everybody this the D is passing and you're going to get a d whether you like it because I'm going to drag you across the finish line and I had to to be honest um I had three four students that actually went to Mrs McCay the instructional
coach and the counselors to and said I want to pull them for my iack curriculum last month because they still had four Fs in academic subjects so I Exempted them and I don't know if that's part of the rules or not so uh but I did it anyway with permission because I think it was more important for them to get a d or a c in that academic subject and to get an A in their elective and I so you know that was an extreme case that was the worst semester i' had and I had fewer students so let's talk about the fewer students um and the class makeup iag formula says I should have 25% in the bottom 25% academically I should have 50% in the middle academically in 25 and the top last
semester if I remember correctly I think we 36 and 41 and then the rest was the top the top half this semester it's a little tougher we 44% bottom academically so we have a tough ride there we're 4 4% in the middle and only 11% in the top but we've improved there as well because in February when I looked at everybody's grades in non-ag classes we only had 22 TS and three DS so that's big Improvement um so we're working on that again but I'm working on that earlier uh after talking with those that I talk with I said I think we need to not hit this at Mid semester which is traditional I think we need to get ahead of this and so I did that week that we talked about this week actually
not knowing I was going to be presenting to the board uh so uh we're we're converting a lot of those fs and D's and in the higher grades because the kids get too far behind they get discouraged and they get in too deep to be honest so that that's an issue um so that is where we're at with that IAC has something that's called their five of five they want every program to meet the five of five data points if you've met those then they consider that success we met our five of five last year and that means uh we had 100% that graduated that's our first of the 505 we had an employment rate for graduates of 62.5% which is meeting that five of five standard we had 80% full-time employment rate after graduating
little higher than normal we had positive outcomes of 62.5% there's a lot in that positive outcome so I'm not going to break that down for time but I could talk with you about that we had 12.5% going on to further their education at college and we had a connectivity rate of 62.5% follow up the heart after they graduate a lot of students are like yeah I said I do follow up but I'm doing good so I don't really have a need for thanks a lot Mr sers you're great have a good life yeah so that's a challenge doing the followup with a number of students but it that improved because the previous show was was even harder so anyway um yeah we're having academic success I think we're having a lot of success with helping
students that think that they will not have success some students that would say that they're hard cases that don't care and that just takes a relationship to build time with them to be able to speak through their lives and be straight with them so now as I look around the room since I am a musician and Performing Artist that has performed a thousand times or more in front of the people I see different looks on people's faces and I'm wondering what those looks are so are there questions that I can answer none uh I'm wondering about how you interface like with parents do you have interaction with them is it just like regular sort of parent teacher conferences like you're available for that or do you end up talking to them more often or that
is a great question and I've had one two three people I set a record that's right last semester I had two people show up for parent teacher conferences I had won all the previous two years all right so parent teacher conferences that's not having an impact although I had great meetings with the parents that I met with but when we look at the numbers yeah they're just not so and I reach out to them hang on one sec Andy that's like pretty normal for the high school yeah yeah and I so I reach out to them personally um I call them I talk to them I don't have a problem with that there's an issue I I involve a parent that's basic best way to do it talk with beforehand I'll go out whenever I
can meet him at the car say hey I'm Mr Summers it's nice to meet you get to put a face with the name you know those kind of things so um because if I wait till there is a problem to connect then we have a problem so I I try to be personable ahead of time I'm assuming they get your newsletter do you get feedback parents with you know I I occasionally get feedback on the newsletter I don't get much I hear more from staff than I do parents and I hear from Community Business Leaders that'll comment to me hey I read that newsletter but I really I don't I don't hear much from parents occasionally I do hey can my kid do an internship with Camerons or something like that U but I hear
mostly from Business Leaders and school so what's your um I like do you have thoughts about how you will recruit kids that are in that top quartile to try to get more of them like what is it that your program has to offer for those it's like the leadership skills and the job preparation career preparation stuff I jack kind of has a reputation of oh that's for the lower 75% I'm in the top 25. and uh so those are harder students to recruit and to be honest with you they're kind of already ahead of the game a time that would have been my kids okay my kids would have been okay because I'm already working with them and we already got a path established for them so I try to pitch that to everybody and
I do get some of those students um one of our students Weston Hoover was in that top 25% last year and he's at college right now and he's knocking it out with the par going great he'll tell you that yeah iag really helped me so that he was in that most recent news letter because he is part of the pitch if you will yeah so um yeah that's something I want to get to um but this is what I find the the recruiting part of AAG is the absolute hardest thing to do and I'm a crazy recruiter okay summer guitar and not have four locations and 12 staff and I wasn't the highest pay guitar teacher in the state of Iowa for years because I can't recruit I know how to recruit and I led
youth Ministries uh in churches and had you know literally hundreds of students at monstrous events I know how to recruit um what I what I think the deal is on the recruiting it could be maybe me is and my style of course but I think it's more that it was it started as an 1112 program and our 1112 students are already on a pathway and electives wise they're already committed to certain electives to do what they're doing so they're excluded so there have been a lot of our Juniors that started and then suddenly their senior year yeah I don't have room on my schedule for I and so then they drop it so then you know I'm like okay it's an 111 12 program that's why like my first month out of the shoot when
I took the job I told I flat out this needs to be a 9 through 12 program I've been doing this for decades this needs to be a 9 through 12 program and thankfully we just got that pass so uh it took two years and we just added the link Center EOC so we jumped 12 people so now we're 32 okay so that's a great thing and uh and I'm I went down and recruited at the middle school so I present that to all the eighth graders that are coming up next year I'm following up this week with them actually with personal emails one onone to say hey this is Mr Summers that'll takeing me a while but if I send them a mass email they won't read it if it that's Personal Touch they
will so um so I'm going after ninth and 10th graders not to exclude but last year I thought I had work I came in here and just lied to all of you because I told you I think I got 30 well 30 some on students recruited and I did but then they went to scheduling and I ended up with negative numbers okay the Lord's just going to think a lot to him I want to the council what happened well they don't have forok their schedule that's what happened you recruited people that wanted to be an I that couldn't I and I lost a few to graduation then I had a few that dropped right so it's that whole 11 12 thing I literally met with every single 10th grader in the school last year for
recruiting every single one were invited and I had meetings for weeks here so um that's pretty aggressive right and that's why I had that school assembly at the uh 8th grade last week down at mle school so we got to get them Beyond and Stat prove that I don't care if you're in the public school or in you're in the faith based sector the young the younger we get the more effective the results academically ninth grade is a key year Amber Moore shared a staff with Mrs M and myself about if you have and I wish I had it here it's in my notes if you have a certain amount of Fs in ninth grade year percentage of Dropout is just astronomically and I just don't remember how many app was right now do you
have support of the of guidance and the counselors because I know like freshman year that schedule a lot of times is pretty full and pretty structured where there's not a lot of flexibility but I I agree with you I can see the benefit of reaching a especially if you're talking about that lower 75th or even that lower half um because that was my question you we wanting them we're wanting them to graduate we're wanting them to get to them before they feel that overwhelming I have too many FS to make that progress and make it up right but if we get to them before they get behind and get those steady habits and a pathway yes it's huge yes it is it absolutely is ninth grade year is CRI and to answer your question yes
Mrs Doven Spike Mrs Bolston and M Rose have been extremely supportive yeah but they can only do what the schedule allows them to so and that's where if we need to there's help that we can provide and or whatever that may be in that flexibility of schedule um that's let us know because that's important the everpresent concern of iag and the school I with superintendent I want to see the numbers up uh so iack tells me I should have 50 to 60 well I'm going to be straight with you I worked 76.5 hours last week okay if I double and I have 60 I have no life so U I'm a straight shooter I always have been I always will be so efficiency as a strategist personality type I'm a commander entj on the six
personalities efficiency is what I'm all about so bring it on let's get those systems going let's do whatever we can to minimize time uh but that's I want to get the numbers up I'm trying to drive the numbers up the efficiency has to improve but that's on the I side because you know I work 50 hours a week now I don't do this intentionally but you come in and you see I'm in that room on some Wednesdays right because I worked at five I've always work seven5 my wife knew that when she married that's just what you do I work hard U you know but then I got I got data crun time right so you know last week I was all that extra time was Data I'm just brunching data okay so that's let's
do my normal 50 so I did uh almost 30 hours of data I'm still not done with that so um I I have that talk so anyway but that that's a that's something too so anyway yeah I'm seeing academic success I'm seeing relational success I'm not seeing the numbers that I wants to see okay um so it's a 5050 deal you pay for half I pays for half so I'm trying to pres I'm actually tracking my time and I'm going to present to j a uh a lot of stats a lot of charts to say hey there's our time 50 what you know to say here are the here are the areas where just now we have a new iag CEO and she is aggressively going after those types of things so I think on
the good side of things that hijack is very aware of that and is aggressively working at that so that that's a very helpful sign for me and uh to the organization by the way iag is the leading Jag organization in America there's 25 different states that have it and so we're the we're the guinea pig and the test the test bunny or whatever you want to call it you know uh this state is the one that comes up comes up with new ideas and tries to develop new process processes to improve things so I'm in the right state to make suggestions thanks all right all right okay thank you very much thanks for bringing bre thank you thanks at this time we'll move on to our district reports we have principal reports and oh we
already know who's going first couple things I thought I would update board on it not so sure how familiar are affected activities last year the uh Iowa legislature passed was better known as bathroom Bill U and it affected how we run home activities in particular when it comes to coaches and working with their athletes if they are from opposite genders it wasn't a huge issue during volleyball basketball is where we really had to girls basketball particular so basically what it says is that if uh the coach is not the same gender as the players that coach cannot go in locker the way the bill is written the only one's allowed to go in locker rooms of opposite gender or bathrooms opposite genders custodians for cleaning emergency Personnel you know and admin if we need to
go into break F whatever but they did not do include anything activities so we've had to create meeting rooms or a meeting room when a visiting team has come if they've had a male basketball coach for the girls basketball teams we started using the uh classroom up and we're trying to keep those hallway a little locked up better so we've been using the media center for the teams over the corners so they still go change in the locker rooms but we have a whiteboard in here and their Coes the male coach Comm with the people students for our own home team we did down in coach Bar's room just that made most sense we didn't have an issue in volleyball because all of our volleyball coaches were female only one other team I think couple
other teams that came here did and they just didn't go to locker room volleyball doesn't use locker room as much to meet with teams anyway so basketball if we would have a female basketball coach of a male basketball program we would have to provide a meeting room as well and what about locker room usage that was the other thing because we typically put the visiting girls team in our boys PE lock room in the visiting boys team and the girls P lock room well we just covered up the sign and made made to sign say what we wanted to say so we have we have signs that we just Tak over and said instead of seeing girls P lock room said boys Miss and that's how we dealt with that issue and it seemed to
work with no is no problems I don't during the Spring we don't have that issue and during the summer we don't have that issue because lock room usage this doesn't happen by Spring Sports especially resitting teams so that's how we've handled it I I also wanted to update you though on a couple bills a one of them pertains to this and there is a bill currently in I don't know if it's a house file Senate file that is going to add coaches to that list of people who can go into lock rooms back like we so basically they're going to correct it they're going to correct it it was something they just didn't think about when they passed and so hopefully this passes and then next year at like halftime obviously not going to go
changeing but at halftime like we've always done coaches will be able to go back in it'll be a lot less hectic than it has been this year we've survived but it's kind of crazy so we'll see where that goes couple other updates that are currently either set files or house files there is a bill out there to require all public schools all School District I'm assuming just public schools to require to have a cash option for fans to to be to come during their home events um we've already we already do that it's not an issue for us but there are a lot of schools in our conference that don't if this passes it will be an issue for that does that that directly challenge the bound relationship is because that kind of what I
understand what I yes and no I'm G to fill in on something with B just found out this morning as well but that that's potential bound told us this morning that right now is for those you are not aware we don't pay for bound that's our scheduled program we do our transportation we do our facilities often that would normally cost but because we're part of the let's go problem program where we use them to run our camps so when we run our summer camps well everybody is going to start registering the summer through Bal pay through them b gets a cut our coaches are happy they don't have to checks cash they love that aspect one of the other aspects is we had to be on the on the path to cashless didn't have to
be cashless had to be on the path cash and then there was one more thing so as long as we didn't have a big sign say hey cash only here great we didn't we didn't advertise cash at all but I did some number crunching today probably about 70% of our income for activities between 60 and 70% is Cash we still bring a lot more than last year cards but not like other next year bound is saying the only requirement they're going to have for us to continue to get it free and all the extra Services is if we meet 80% cashless which I told the guy turn said take us off that list right now I said our community will never be I'm going to reach out to them say hey can what if we
went from that 35% average up to 40% average because the more and more people find out get used to paying debit card or credit card the more and more they're going to do we still don't push it but that's so we might have to start paying for Bound in the future we kind of that if this things ever changed it's not a big deal we're going have to pay for something with bound our school whatever you had to pay we just got lucky this year not having to pay so we'll we'll fight so that's how bounds got around that is they're never going to require that 100% cash they always have at least as long as you're 80% good and then you can meet the uh if that bill passes they can meet that the
issue will be the state side which is no cash how do they go another new bill that could come into play a little bit is a residency requirement right now the student transfers to the school that they have to become in order to be eligible for Varsity Sports they have to be uh meet so many requirements or meet one of so many requirements they're going to add to that so either if your family moved here great if it was a thing with a court system and through a divorce and change of residency there things of that now they're going to add if if it passes that agreement between both schools that yeah you know this kid is eligible it could be such a situation that that the kid is from Northern Iowa and they come
here for something but they don't meet any one of those requirements as long as both schools green that K can be eligible immediately for Varsity Sports right now they have to sit 90 school days which is essentially once District so be interested is that that's our legislative it affect us any questions I do have a question on bound because we use bound as our school calendar and and partly I'm kind wondering how that's going and if that's working well but I'm also wondering just if and I don't know if it's a using I've had a couple people comment on and I think it's when they're using mobile devices like a phone all of a sudden you get back on it and you're like in November on the calendar and it it's a little glitchy that
way so with what I started when we started noticing this we informed B said your app is terrible and they are well aware of it it hasn't been updated yet as far as I know they have been working on it I don't know how hard or difficult that is I don't have that technology brain but I always encourage people go to your go to your internet and just type in go.com you won't have the issues that the app has so that that's a great question it's hard to train people away from apps because we've got exactly we're so used we're so used to apps but if you go to goal.com on your phone on your computer much easier access to it outbound itself is going there's always going to be glitches but I'll give you
a great example last Saturday Creston hosted two Satur Saturday after Creston hosted the boys wrestling confer and they had it set up to where that money would go immediately to leis Central instead of cres because Louis Central is the home for the the money for the Hawkeye 10 and that's Hawkeye 10 win and it wasn't working and it was having issues 9:35 on a Saturday morning trust ad calls up Bound by 9:4 bu that was Sal that doesn't didn't happen with our that wouldn't have gotten salv for two or three days at least that's why we love B so it it's responsive and they are so responsive to stuff is it possibly going to cost us if we don't meet that threshold next year sure but it's not going to cost us any more than
Park school did so it's a wash in that as so we're we're still really excited we're getting used to the facility the transportation part of it Steve but Steve said he and I meet every Monday morning on zoom and we go over that week and then a following upbound go through all our transportation things we are now trying to train FFA we're trying to train teachers at the other elementary schools when they're doing field trips to use bound to get away from the bus request the transportation request we usually use to go through bound working through hamper or I at a point where all the transportation requests bu are bounded i' probably say we're 80 to 90% there but we still got a little work to do it provides quite a bit of good things
for us and they're just so responsive almost the entire state is required to use it for Varsity Sports and girls anyways that 100% required so might as well have to do it for that do it for everything so I am just going to inform you guys that we have a couple opportunities U or visitors from the state that are going to be coming to our district here in the next couple months uh teachers may not see it as the opportunity that I might but uh we do have a couple visitors so we have our special education students that have Al assessment they assessment called the DM which is now going to escape me so I'm just going to call it the DM um and so just happens that we are on the rotation of schools
that will get a site visit an on-site visit from the DM test coordinator State and so she's going to come in and watch our alternative testment teachers uh give give the assessment um share with us anything any support that she might provide or any thoughts that she has on some of the things uh that she sees while she's here for the visit um I think like having had conversation with her I think it's a good opportunity some people see it as a oh my gosh they're year that's a gotcha type of situation oh my gosh you know like get nervous but she was great said hey I don't want to see the easy testing students I want to see the students that are going to be hard I want to work with you to make
this like make it a good like good situation for you and for the opportunity for the teachers so it was a great conversation with her like you can always show me the easy one but I'm not going to give you any input give me something to see that's going to be a little bit harder that way we can work together and and make this a better situation so um that is going to happen actually I just got another email we had a date for March 20th we'll see when that comes up uh she had a date change possibly so we we'll see where that goes um and then we have another visit coming actually this Friday from the therapeutic classroom grants uh people from the state are going to come in and they're going to
come visit our therapeutic platforms that's part of getting the grant is they're going to come in and they're going to watch see like see what's going on have conversations with us with teachers and see you know again it's uh not a it was it's framed as not a gotcha it's framed as a hey what can we help you with how's it going what are some things we need to do um they gave us a list of things that we can kind of go over with them when they get here so it's an opportunity you know I talk to Mrs McBride because I work with her all time and she's like I'm just nervous about them coming said read through the email it'll be fine I got to talk to the lady it's it's not it's
not intended to be that way um I think it's just meant to be that support of hey we want to make these successful so let's see how what we can do um how can we work with you to make this successful so we do have some site visits coming up from the state department uh coming to our districts hear about hey they this team from the state came I wanted to give you guys a heads up hey these are the these are the two different um site visits that we're going to have from the state coming in to watch see our program see what we're doing give support um and I think it's a great opportunity to for our our staff to have a voice and say hey this is working great this isn't how
can we make it better so um you know when we frame it like that it's it's a team working together and make things better think it it looks you know staff are a little bit a little bit better okay with that but uh you know there's some nerves with it but I think really it's a good opportunity for us to meet with State talk to them have give us suggestions and say so just wanted to give you guys some updates on that any questions so are both going to be this month uh one's this month and one's in March okay I'd love to hear about it after like what they say and what you guys learn from it yeah hopefully we get some good stuff so no we'll do try to update you it might
be before the next four meetings so we'll it is I'll let you know thank so I'm glad that Steve presented tonight because he's um one of my most goto people it seems like we're always adding kids and it seems like every kid we have adding is going to need transportation and I sent him a message and he's like got it on it no problem he never says no can't he always responds in a really positive so he's been a great addition for us very grateful to have him um at Washington we just celebrated the 100 day school which is a very big deal um this year we changed our theme we usually have kids dress up like their 100 which is really cute but this year we switched up and we said for 100 days
brighter so they all were like their brightest cute Leon type stuff it was really cute kids were their teach so sh um they do well their parents do so that helps us out um so it's been a lot of fun and we have Valentine's day next week and everyone there's not enough sugar in all the world so it's it's going to be good times at Washington um just one more shout out thanks to Christy shaim and that with representative Moore um who came in um to preschool with us and I think Jenny they said you'd been there too yeah I went to yeah so um our preschool people are amazing um we've just finished up our when our past testing and our kindergarten kids just blew it out of the water and that a big
part of that is because they have such a great s of foundation in preschool and then our fantastic so numbers were good numbers really proud of it really proud the whole staff all the way across but kind was like it's great thank you I told Stacy uh I walked out of the building today and thought it' been a nice day to be a PE teacher but with Valentine's Day coming up I'm flat I'm just going to highlight some things that focus on our building uh culture and environment um and I'm gonna add one that I never knew it became such a big deal I just saw um Emma maybe somebody put it on Facebook these sticky notes and I didn't notice because it's only in the girls bathroom but I do remember and I wished
I would have paid more attention I had two um two female students ask me like maybe last week I on my weeks are kind of blurry um if they could do sticky note like kindness remarks on the mirrors in the bathroom I like was busy with million things I'm like yeah that sounds good well I didn't know it like blew up to like what it is so that was really cool to see so um so that was a small thing that ended up having a big impact um also uh we'll have our first climate and culture committee meeting this Friday morning um that's composed of students we have five currently have five from each grade level so we have 15 that um are going to start us out with that and they're going to do
the important work of um what parts of our building what parts of our day do we feel the safest maybe we not feel the safest and or where acts of kindness or where do we need acts of kindness and just kind of how we can um Target those areas and brainstorm ways to make it a better place for everybody um miss aliia our new library um Pera came up with the idea I think she might have been asked um if we would make Valentine's cards um for care facilities in town so I know she took that on and I know she had well over hundred students loved it we had a station they could um had a station they could develop and create those I just asked her make sure you appr read them please
um and all work pretty good I just had to remind them this is more through Grandma and Grandpa not waer a type of deal um but they had fun with it and those are being delivered um next week um and uh see sent some job well done letters they just went in the mail I think today um for NWA growth from from fall to winter so just trying to highlight the good things that are going on in the building hey that takes care of our principal report so on to our superintendent report so if you look at my um superintendent agenda for the meeting first thing I to talk about is the PLC Summit that the administrative team will be going to uh next week we had tried to find a place or a training
for administrators that wasn't going to be like travel trip that we were going to fly off the only one we could find uh that fit our needs is in Phoenix so um the principles have their buildings set up to take care of staff and students kind of got a plan in place so the the group of us are going to fly down to uh Phoenix and go to this uh Nationwide BLC Summit and a lot of the reasons behind that uh any type of research based best practices tells us that if we want to start something and have it be successful you first have to train your leaders to have that plan in place be able to talk the talk and be able to support teachers and any part of like PLC teaming to make
it very successful even um some of the stuff that we're working on right now as different buildings and staff like ntss um idea Isa any of that stuff that we go to meetings that we have to work on to review as a building it could be the Middle School building the high school building Scher they have to do an evaluation of where they're currently at on just their leadership Point um as they help teachers prepare on just an mtss and we evaluate ourselves kind of at a beginning level so by going to this this uh conference training as administrators as leaders of the district we hope to pick up on good practices and then when we get back it's what's our next steps we'll also meet with um one of the organizers for um the
conference they will take us to that next step what do we do now that you've had training what's our plans and then we'll kind of go from there so it's it's exciting to have that opportunity to go to that Summit now another thing to talk about tomorrow we have our second Sak meeting we had our first one January 18th we we got to meet for about an hour and a half and then we left early because it was a snowstorm that kind of set us back for two or three days so tomorrow we pick up from where we left off on our Sak meeting It's a combination of Administrators uh we've got some students on it um instructional coaches um Community member board members we get together and what we are looking at is we're
we're looking at the board's strategic priorities and we try to make sure that we understand where the board uh envisions uh our education program going so where's our vision where are our uh priorities that we should be looking at and then we start to match up where what do we do for our programs and to start with we do data Dives so we look at current data and then Trend data for the last three to five years and Trend data will tell us uh the strength of our instructional programs uh any of the programs that we currently offer here at at at planning and it will guide us or give us information on things that we need to pay attention to what's going well we we're where're struggling at and then it'll help us kind
of Define what we need to do and it usually involves some type of curriculum decision um program change possibly for us it jump in and say like we think we know what needs to be done we need to have that data that is kind of verifying information at just kind of that um big picture idea and then we kind of go from there so we'll do a lot of data talk and a lot of data diving tomorrow I would like us to get to another part of the Strategic priorities if we have time and that would be dealing with ar culture and that's one of the Strategic priorities like I said uh it was pretty pretty exciting to have uh the Attorney General Brena bird here last Friday it was really good to hear her
talk about just the the dangers of fentol and I think our kids well I know they were they were fabulous they were very attentive respectful it's just kind of a proud proud day to see a large group of kids um show that kind of respect even um our our um chief of police and and uh County Sheriff they were there talked it it was just a great moment for our kids I felt um next thing is our aea um situation it's it's all across the state concerned about our aea programs and so we've put out a staff survey for all the services that we potentially could be using here at Atlantic and so that and the board has that information it was pretty interesting a lot of the sped programs and any of the services
we use uh consistently a lot some of the other programs not so much not so much and and it was just good information to know next thing is on just protective procedures for the district um we had a meeting January 23d where we pulled in just law enforcement uh the communications or the um what's called the commer yeah they call it com Center so yeah the Communication Center Bobby was even in um and we had some different um Community people at that meeting too and and actually we we were gathering more information from what their questions were um to get what we wanted to do to be better organized so the situation that involved the the Perry School District uh um you know that that's on our mind we had a school threat here and
then just different things that is happening either in Iowa or across the country it's all got us kind of paying attention what do we need to do uh so I met with the principles and he said we we have to do something we we have a plan in place a safety plan we know it will take care of our kids but we need to be more proactive so I asked all four building principles to do specific things and so the middle school and the high school I asked uh those two principles and and Mr Mitchell was part of them too to organize a group of students whoever they chose as student leaders and we start to involve kids in the process of deciding how do we make our building safer how do we make the
environment safer um because they have a voice they they can see things they hear things we needed to have them to be more actively involved so that's what tomorrow's meeting's about they've already uh turned it around and have an initial meeting setup with those student leaders and the students are going to give us information and be a part of how do we keep our buildings safe and a lot of it hopefully will go to the the culture um f more tolerant of each other um befriending kids if they see somebody left out excluded that type of thing so it's it's more inclusion um that type of practice but also just evaluating what we do in the building to keep things safe we probably will be doing some more Alice trainings but we have to have
the kids in place on board to understand the importance of just safety procedures in a building and why we do it at the two elementaries they're going more with a um meeting with the parents they're going to meet with the groups of parents I think the PTO they've got that setup and this is more the angle of getting parents more involved and understanding of how can we do a better job of keeping our kids safe and maybe it's also informing parents this is what we do um this is what an ALICE training looks like uh I think more parent involvement at that Elementary level is is what we need to be doing we're going to get some good ideas in both settings so I'm excited to get more involvement from our students and from our
parents so we'll see how it goes we also have looking at my notes Here uh District Safety Committee set up February 26 and uh whatever we have kind of gain from our parent meeting then our student group we're going to be able to bring that to that safety committee meeting kind of talking a little bit more about the safety issue um we s a lot out January 24th it was that threat to the school the high school here and um it's becoming the practice now instead of just we we had a threat it was contained uh the police deemed it nonthreatening and we move on with the day I think a lot of past practices across Iowa Across the Nation was we don't want to cause Panic we don't want to cause fear um we
handled it you know we don't want to K get kids nervous and upside now the practice is we we need to tell our families there was a threat it was uh handled appropriately the police were involved and it's it's the information that we think is important to get out to appearance and then recently Saturday our was in anony and they again had a threat we had kids at that event they were evacuated out of the building put on a bus and brought home or some of their parents were there and they just wrote home with their their their parents too uh again even though it didn't involve the majority of our our kids get involved some of the kids at at atlanic and so as a community we need to be aware that we had
some kids involved in the situation and to share that out I think as a school district that it you know there was a threat you you may hear it on the news but you're going to start seeing those messages out to parents and on JMC anytime we do have a threat and I hope it doesn't cause anxiety for families or people wondering why are we sending these messages out my kid was not involved I think as a community Community we need to recognize it as it's kids of our community and it's important for us to know that somebody was in potentially a threatening situation so and that's the the reasons behind that whole practice of kind of getting information out to families and that's what all I have right now thank you any questions yes
we'll move on to the board group report this is an opportunity for board members to share um their activities observations um any shout outs that you have I did go to the Early Learning Center spent quite a bit of time on the floor but it was fun um I also because I'm on the conference review board the assessor's office I spent two and a half hours with Shana Platt deputy assessor and Wendy RoR who's the supervisor um basically we just had questions about what this board does this review board does and I learned a whole lot about taxing and lovees and how you can look at Beacon and and you can find a lot of information if you want but it's very interesting just to get into an area that I wasn't familiar with so
thank you for representing us on that board yeah um I think I just I probably said this last year but I'll say again this year that we're going to be talking about the staff survey uh here in a minute but I'm just so appreciative of our staff um the board what what we got from that uh is sort of like a uh you know like a breakdown of the results and we have the free form responses that our staff gave but just in a list they're completely they're not uh sorted by building or anything like that so y'all are Anonymous but even so the um like the diverse voices that we have among our staff came through and I'm always so grateful to read those because I just see how serious everybody takes their jobs
and like the commitment and their desire to improve and you know I I just I I like see you know some people will only give like a one or two word response you know like we need more communication which is ironic because you're only using two words to say it but like other people you know it's like a couple of paragraphs and they clearly like they've been thinking about this and it's like this is their chance to be like this is the one thing that our district really needs or our building really needs and I'm just uh really uh gratified by that and just appreciate everybody's participation in that as well as in the aea surve survey which was just kind of a a popup survey but that's helpful for me because that's info that
I'm going to bring back to ISB the state board that I sit on so thank you guys for doing that um I I want to thank um our early childhood staff for allowing us to come to the building um that was one of the things that was initiated um by the board and really by iasb um because last year there was a focus on expanding funding for preschool and early childhood education and that's a continued Focus for this year Al though as we see with the legislative session you know different things come in and there's different priorities that are happening now but I hope we can still have a focus on expanding a preschool and that was one of the suggestions was to invite your legislators to come and see your preschools and see what's
happening and I thought it was a great Showcase of I mean the kids were so engaged and we saw a lot of just really great things happening um in small groups in Creative play and just just um and I think it was better than we could do if we um talked to our Representatives it was a great way to show um how we have a very unique three-year-old program here and how that that's helping um our district and as Stacy said in her report certainly helping uh our scores when they get to kindergarten um we're addressing those issues so um thank you I I sent them thank you notes but thank you um to all of your staff and and to you for being willing to do that it also was a good opportunity to
see I think there's a couple things um that we maybe need to address building wise or think about and that'll be on know future meetings that we talk about those so I do bringing that up with that I I did want to know I know I'm planning to attend day on the hill Lisa if you would register me and if anybody else would like to do that I'm going but you don't need to register me because I registered your ISB so yeah okay Christy and Jen yeah are you going to go both days what are you guys GNA there's like planning Tuesday I guess I didn't I I didn't look at it close Monday they it's like G to be like a training and prep session and then a dinner and it the that Monday
focus is going to be on aeas and AA advocacy I believe um I'm going just on the Tuesday so I want want to ride yeah I guess I was just gr on Tuesday with the day I put it on my schedule so are you signing that up Lisa all great thank you I was GNA bring that up during upcoming dates yeah so awesome okay um we'll move on to discussion items and um if I'm following along correctly with ours I think the first thing is to review the summary of our staff culture surday and so um as Laura Ed to we did send out a survey um this is sort of I I would like it as a followup to what we did last year we tried to stay very similar with our questions so
that we could have sort of a measurement Point um we really appreciate um the responses and the responsiveness of of our staff you want to speak to some of the sure themes maybe or so the same questions is last year presented to staff um 20 more people filled at the survey so that that's always a good thing to get more people more information and so me one minute Financial reports oh my goodness yes sorry I did because they're kind of t under why I always miss them well and I kind of wanted to remember that because I did think okay I get why they're there um let's take some time to look at our financial reports we can do it at another time I just it need a motion so I just didn't it's important
we should yeah I we just need to pull it out as a financial report like number eight would that be okay yeah under District reports just put it a separate yeah that be its own thing it's important enough I think um did you have some things you wanted to review on that um I shared with you the board reports probably the only thing really is we're at 58% uh of the year is over so we're 7 months completed as of January 31 um we are running uh high in revenues and low in expenses that's always the way we want to be um this was the first month though that had occurred so we've had lots of events and stuff and those deposits are coming in and and property taxes people have paid and and so
um we're running at about $10 million revenue and about $9 million expenses currently so we're currently in a good position for where we're at but we're constantly just watching things making sure that we're still healthy you know my only question is going to be and this could isn't like a right now question but since I'm thinking about it that nutrition fund that's so bulky like is that just GNA sit forever I I know we've had this conversation before like I know Natalie has tried to spend money however she can is does anybody know is there any discussion of allowing that money to be transferred into general fund or is there any like I don't mean by us I mean as a legislative legislative yeah or what you see at Atlantic is not normal just so
you know the balance that they have um is not normal at the state so we would be one of the few that have a positive balance okay so I wouldn't want to make too big a puss got it about having a positive balance because lot schools would be very envious of what we have now I ass this is a promp for everybody Natalie and I are working together to review expenses making sure um that there is everything that she needs we're talking about her staffing needs for next year as well as what that money can be spent on because it is mostly federal and state funded outside of folks paying on their lunch accounts and so because it's federal and state there means there's some guidelines there on what you can spend it on and
so we're limited on that but Atlantic is very blessed that they have been fortunate you will find that they are one a few that are in that position so I wouldn't want to knock on would have that go away right is there but equipment obviously she looked yeah you know I just even wonder like she bought new equipment lots of people yeah yeah but you know as things happen it' be interesting you know if she t other facilities if there's like grab and go or different coolers or things that we can sure I mean is that food also yeah doesn't include food can we get I mean can the kids eat f mñ is that I said fet Friday I I pushed it but we're flying in Lobster from Main again state law there's some
rules so there are certain things we can and can't do definitely can make some changes now her uh I mean you guys see it in a monthly view I see it probably a little bit bigger than that but her expenses are runting a little bit higher than a revenue so okay you might be excited with her balances I'd like her to slow down the vending a little bit but you know that's just that will turn that account yes and I don't want it to turn too fast because then we're going to be having a different conversation and so and it has to be self-sufficient the money can only be used in a nutrition program and they run like a business they are a separate entity so um I would say we are should be happy
with where we're at and let's hope the future continues with that I would take a motion to approve the financial reports I move re approve the okay Christy pellet yes Jody grid yes Jenny Jordan yes Laur M okay with that I got ahead of myself so I apologize for that but now we will discuss staff survey and um you know I think if you look at we definitely have some pie charts you know we could look at with responses and discuss as well as I think I I was drawn more of the comments that's kind of where I sat on things but well I mean I would be okay to kick it off just asking you guys um when we did the first survey last year and we had gotten comments back is that something
that you guys have continued over the course of the last year obviously not Mr pels or as much but to uh to sort of try to address those or like keep those comments in mind um in your in your leadership and in your building team meetings and things like that like I'm wondering the basically that for you know for people who don't have these P charts in front of them we saw Improvement in a lot of the areas with with our staff feeling uh a better sense of connection to each other and to the district and uh higher levels of Engagement with the Strategic priorities and things like that across the board just in general and so I'm wondering were you guys did you guys have like plans where you were trying to raise those
things or is that just a natural outgrowth of something I know we had conversations I think we took it back to to these building um talked about the some the themes from the comments that we had and ways that we could maybe improve some of those pieces so I mean did we review it this fall again I don't know that I can say that but I know we reviewed it last year and talked about some things that we could do that would help boost some of those different pieces and those conversations have continued I don't know like we went back to those specific comments the fall but I think we went back to some of the things we talked about to help support those comments that make sense else I think just my take away
from it um a survey you know either the pie chart which just asks you know the questions and then you know however the response I I feel like all the areas improved you know um and then uh on my comments it uh it gave me a sense of kind of a a good almost family likee environment in all the buildings um it it that theme came through on on um what do they like best about um Atlantic Community School Districts either their building the people they work with um just that strong sense of relationship and and that's what they really really liked I mean that was that was a very common thing things to improve on um you know communication we need to do a better job as a district to communicate um sorry could
I just land on that one for a second do you guys have a sense for because there were a lot of people who did mention communication that came up a lot and do you think that uh staff are talking about in their buildings or between buildings or on their teams did do you guys like when when people are saying things like we need to improve communication do you know what they mean no no okay all of you shook your heads at the same time all hores something that we to go back to our okay what is great and interestingly enough that was one of the areas on the positives that had a lot of communication is so much better and I was like oh this is a bre of fresh a so and then you
got to the what needs Improvement it's like oh okay not um I one of the things and it was concerning last year and it continues to um concern me a little bit is um the result on professional development and you know probably I would point out like 30% are just neutral you know which I kind of question does that mean we're just sort of apathe I know we we invest a lot of time and a lot of resources into professional development and I know you know for our staff I understand you know it's kind of like we do this every year we do but for us as a board it's important for us to find meaningful professional development or at least make those connections with our staff that that's meaningful um because that that's where
we see at least that's what we have been taught um in terms of what is going to improve teaching and learning um so you know I guess to me that was a point that I thought you know maybe um as a board as a staff that that's a place where we could do a little bit more probing to see um where we get movement because you know we had uh you've got some that are are great but um that's just an area for us to that's one of the things we also talked about yesterday and that's partly why wants to go to the PLC conference and that will give us another way to kind of refresh the things that we're doing and bring in some new ideas for professional development I think another part of
some of those comments are different buildings are doing different things and I think um that might be part of the communication thing like some people think that other people are working harder than they are maybe try to say it um so yeah I think we just all need to get a little more connected yeah yeah well and and I think that's one of the things um I guess I would say from a board perspective you know I think you people what are we doing send in our administrators but I I think it's important as we place an emphasis on professional development it's important for you all to have professional development and I think you know that that starts at um your level and you know will um I think that in activity and having some
opportunities for you guys to reset refresh and come back with with new ideas to infuse into your buildings um it's huge and and we I think I speak for the entire board when I say we're supportive of that and those efforts so one of the other common them that came out on the survey you know what could what do we want to improve collaboration that was often uh listed too so um I would like to have uh ask board permission to give uh this survey up staff so we'll send the pie charts and then we'll send the comments out and I'll make sure I'll come through it so there's not any any comment that's going to hurts if somebody's steing in it but I think the way that all the responses everybody I think will
be good at this and send it out and it's just good information for all of us to see and understand that's okay part of the improvement process and that's what that's what we're looking for absolutely um I I did just there were a couple of people who talked about vertical alignment among the buildings and I remember that we had talked about that like last August as being a big goal for this year and I'm wondering have you guys like continued to how is that working itself out like are you guys continuing to to do things to work on that are we or Beth I don't know if that's the best one to answer that um can you describe you're talking about vertical alignment are you talk about transitions or about the um between yes the
transitions so at the we did a retreat with principles in August I think and one of the big themes that came out was that we needed um to do better with when our students go from one building to another essentially and so there were also like some comments that came about um how well uh you know teachers who are teaching in the same area you know math or social studies or something are aligned to the other buildings and I just I I know it's a work in progress so that didn't surprise me but I was wondering how that is continuing to I would like an update just on how we're doing that so we talked about that yesterday at our meeting about going to this PLC Summit and talking about you know professional development Wednesdays
of next year we're not going to be able to change anything for this year but you know doing some dreaming and talking and and uh our Wednesdays for PD maybe we try to do some more activities where we're um think of involving you know a K12 staff instead of just building separate we try to get you know cafeteria when or Wednesday once a month where it's a cafeteria choice where I'm choosing what PD I want to go to and it might be a kindergarten teach teacher a third grade teacher you know a middle school and a high school because they have a common interest on a specific kind of practice I mean that's what we call a cafeteria choice you know you kind to choose where you want to go um so we were just
kind of talking out loud and thinking what could we do and how do we try to get more collaboration going on and uh getting staff to know each other a little bit more um the the um the transitions I think that kind of goes back down to that granular level of just the staff we have to create time for um like the third grade teachers to meet with fourth grade teacher fifth grade teacher we have to set up that time for them to meet and then that that would be teaming right how do we team and help them kind of know what information to share either moving forward to that next grade or the the like the fourth grade teacher is um loving the Third the second grade teachers know um here's the things our
kids need to know or your when they get into fourth and fifth grade we just we go through our year we just don't take time to really set up those meetings intentionally to have great conversations but we got to schedule that stuff and and I I do think it's very important it's something it's not new we've talked about it from the past doing better on that a lot of it was kind of with curriculum when we were kind of making changes in our curriculum seeing how well do those things mesh up um but I agree it's also I see a difference with the transition and just making sure that those transition years are successful and in our district we're unique and that you know we have several buildings so our kids be more I would
argue more transitions in the Atlantic Comm School District than they would in other districts that might have for example a prek through six building or prek through eight building and you know those con connections are there throughout the day so um I think the fact that we're being mindful of that I that's what your Workshop um your training will will help somewhat with that create that collaboration yes yeah I just think kind of what we're describing um might be that communication that people think needs improved you know I think a lot of times I assume it's me communicating with staff or vice versa but I think it's time to communicate with one another about transitions or curriculum alignment and yeah the PLC thing will you know hopefully U provide opportunity for that you know in
the coming years but um I appreciate the transition thing because my last week and a half with eighth grade students has been high schools around the corner like so yeah I'm open to ideas on ways to make that transition to get them to think and I want them to come into High School ready for high school you know and so that's been on my mind heavily the last coup weeks as well it would have been interesting to ask you know with our our you know I know there was terrible things with our fire year but having those eighth graders up here I would have been interested to ask Heather or Andy if that was a better transition for that class because they spent some time up here and you know I don't know that would
be an interesting point well just from personal my son was in that class and he loved it I mean he was completely ready for high school it was not a big deal he wasn't nervous about anything it was just such a smooth transition um and it's just his daily the day to day it was the day to where to go to Lun where the rooms were yeah was much easier for so how we facilitate that more there's some ways that we can artificially do that or you know make some things happen we professional development not this Wednesday but Wednesday ago that included preschool and including Community Partners and Kim just to talk about OT type things handwriting any kind of fine molder skills which was the first time we've really done that during the school
year and it was it was really good powerful professional that included help with that well and I noticed I'm going to pick on you Stacy pointed out when Tom was there you know the kids were doing a little I don't they had like fuzzy balls or some cotton balls and they had tweezers and they were picking them up with this and so she explained okay that's creating that strength so that they can cut can write you know so having that knowledge of there's a purpose it's not just an activity that they're doing but this is the purpose of meaningful preschool activities that's great does the eth grade come up at all like before the end of the year to tour as a group or spend any time at the high school yeah we did last
year with the U when we had our field day at the high school which just started last year that morning we brought a up there for the most part annual Co r that for a couple years but the fire did too you know we bring them up and they meet with their home their their home room teachers going be they got tours in the building met with us in the aori Bas basic that way and that's pretty General most buildings I will say the 8th grade car sophomores may have been too comfortable last year yeah there were some times they do too much I'm sure you St hasn't been a huge transition the day-to-day stuff isn't it's to me it's more about getting the curricular alignment the vertical alignment that way as opposed to day
day at least with this age that might be different from the third grade going to fourth grade but e8th grade going to going to nth grade us within a week we're it's that the way to go I know we do a little bit how much do we do of that and is you know work doing a a couple days of that you know for our third graders going over to Schuler and our fifth graders they're a little bit more connected going over but kind of doing like a a day camp week if you will or something where you kind of have some mentorship and some yeah so I mean I know third grade comes up um and I send them around with fourth graders or fifth graders to get from a tour building show them
all the places they're going to go I mean they take a it's like you visit every special location every train location you need just to kind of get familiar they walk over the middle school music room so they have that um that opportunity we transitioned some other students too that might need additional yeah Sports and coming across there's a handful of kids that W like almost a week worth of going down and spending time in the classroom getting teacher yeah come up visit for two hours hour something like that yeah and then we I know I mean it is easy for a Sher to go over to the middle school they're already fairly familiar with building Mrs C does a nice job that last month of school of like hey here's where your classes are
going to be this is what you're going to do like these are these are some things places that you're going to go um and we do we are lucky to have I because we're attached so like they'll do a little mini concert they'll do a little mini um fan thing so that the kids can have some opportunities to understand some other opportunities that are part of it um I think that transition's fairly easy just because we're catwalk away and they are their nurses over there their Music's Over There their's over there they're not scared to go over there that makes sense but yeah they're semi familiar with the building but yeah no think make maybe it is curriculum that we're more you know need to be more focused on that and staff and staff connection
from what I heard from my own kids the anxiety level between the Schuler to Middle School it's always focused on the classes are going to be so much harder and the preparation you know are they prepared enough to jump to middle school and so I don't know if that's dealing with some of the vertical what did you call it alignment again between the two schools if that could help maybe alleviate some of that um between the teachers and then down to the students level as well I'm not sure yeah I think it's more the curriculum than the actual facilities in that regard like always all it is can they do the lockers class yeah yeah I don't see same but I do know any more on culture for now I think you know I think
our messages were going to continue to look for a survey again because we we are utilizing this data it's important to us um we value your input and we hope that you will um take time to dig into the results a little bit once those are shared with you okay so we will move on to our action items um and the first um is to advertise and hire a director of student services I know High presented the idea to the board before to let it kind of you know soak in a little bit and have you kind of think about what does this director do and you know is sustainable and the cost involved um but as we continue to have different situations that that kind of arise it just kind of gives support for
this position and if you look at the job description it catches a lot of area between special ed ESL um our tag programs our Dropout programs 504s even homeschooling um homeless any of those areas there's a lot of support student needs Direction you know even help with training Paris in the special ed program um title program title on your to would also include title those are specific programs that the teachers are managing not all of them but it feels like they're they're kind of taking care of them in addition to to teaching and because of the demands and Reporting expectations that you know their state department or federal uh education department requires It's just sometimes overload and so this director of student services would be in charge of all these programs to make sure you
know people are supported um trained if needed so um this looks like a lot I I was uh pretty overwhelmed by the job description performance responsibilities are you um did you take this from like are lots of other districts have a position like this and is a normal scope of work for I can't say a lot but in the in the state of Iowa uh I would say anytime you're seeing a school district with a population of about oh maybe, 1500 to 2,000 kids and larger they have this director of student services so we're we're p in that same number in ballpark so we're we're more than 1500 we're less than 2,000 students in the district because of all of our students needs population needs um we're at that point where we do need somebody
to help help kind of manage direct support those different groups so yeah it looks overwhelming in in a in a given week I'll just say in a given week you know that person may be spending 20 out of the 40 hours a week working on special ed and the other you know 20 hours they might be working on El population support staff whatever it is and then the next week might be all on tag so it just kind of the weak the weak demands of that position kind of varies now I believe that probably not quite half but a good percent of of the position that person will be doing a lot of support for especially at students stab any of that um so the task that work covering all these tasks we're covering now
within our district um or not covering because there isn't time I'm assuming that's you know I'm going to go to our administrators all of you are doing these now so how much of your time is spent in this capacity I guess on average and I'll say special education yeah I I realize Andy you're in a little bit different yeah um it's kind of like best kind of Cl um so I have more grade levels than the rest of these guys school so I sit in on a lot of I meetings and we also have to have transition meetings for all of our preschoolers I probably set in on conservatively 129 meetings here so I mean would you would you I say would you continue to do that mostly I would imagine i' probably maybe like
not go to all of them go to like three those or um maybe you can get rid of app um that's that's a big part and that's just the that's not allot depend on the level of student level three IEPs may not be the Principal would beor services at that level such a more intense some the other ones maybe some principal yeah I mean I just look I don't know exactly I know I do like so on I just talk to you guys about the BLM they're going to come visit and stuff like that I would guess this would disposition might take care of some of those like I would they wouldn't be I wouldn't be setting up some of those reports and some of those things for the teachers um think there's something else
that I saw I mean I think it just takes bits and pieces off of all of us is that don't know and it' be it'll be interesting to see exactly just how it looks and I until you get in the swing I don't know well and how we know exactly everything that makes sense but yeah there's definitely like the the homeless piece on on the homeless Le EX on for the district the alternate assessment person the test coordinator so there some of that would definitely fit into this role this person would also SP director would also work with Transportation making those arrangements again these guys are doing all those additional things that we don't even think about um in the day you know life of a principal so they're doing all these tasks all over
the place and then they try to find time to just you know help teachers an instructional leader that's what I we find more time for you and uh spend time with with students you know just you know that's helpful Christie like because that's what I was trying to think like so is there like who's doing this work currently and so because this is a this is going to be a fairly expensive position to fund and we'll be making a commitment that we're funding it every year so I wanted to think about so if this is this enhancing the services that we're currently providing to these classes of students or is this just sort of consolidating work that's being spread out and done by a whole bunch of different people under one person yeah for our
previous discussion you know I I sort of see the opportunity to have some continuity and that you know we talked about that that alignment but somebody sort of understanding what this looks like in every building and and the needs and how those progress but that's that that was just came out of my thought from our previous discussion so any of the meetings that we have gone to you know as a admin team where we have to go to any Isa or mtss or idea da meetings that I've gone to and learned about what what we need to do at the district that person would be the lead on those things and you know collecting that information and doing all the summary writeups um reports that are submitted um and that allows again these principles to
do what they need to be doing with their staff they've got large student populations uh in their buildings and so for them to kind of be spread thin for whatever they're doing even our e population we know it continues to grow we are not really doing a super duper great job of providing Services for Families because the numbers have become overwhelming and it's hard for our staff it's hard for anybody in the buildings to really feel like we're doing a great job we just can't seem to keep up of it have you had any input from other staff regarding this position no we haven't have not that might be interesting to see what the teachers that are in those roles like special evence stuff think and input they may have about it I think some
of the feedback that we've got previously and I'm just I'm thinking at one in particular um just Staffing of uh skill you know having you we have some wonderful parents in our special education but having that continuity for some of those classrooms um when they have transitions there in Paris that LE there's training that needs to happen there things and a lot of that falls on the classroom teacher a lot of responsibilities for our special education classroom teachers on that supervision and training of Paris and um so I I would see this person helping with that helping with substitutes in those areas just coordinating Paris schedules making sure IEPs you know are being addressed correctly helping the teachers understand how to set up a a schedule to support all the kids that are in their
case load one of my concerns in adding this position I I with that I think Laura spoke to we have a big wish list getting ensuring that if we are going to hire somebody that we're not just hiring somebody to fill the position but that we have the right person and I would hope that if we we don't have the right person to apply we say well this isn't the year to do this agreed okay for sure that is the board you are ready to we need to have more discussion more input on this are we ready to I would like to I'd like to more information okay you you had mentioned like ask the teachers the staff so I'll probably go sped teachers tag teachers any any of the staff that are involved in
this position yeah it it's just it covers such a broad range I just feel like we need to maybe Define the rule better before we send it out for advertisement um maybe if you could if some of those comparison um that you've seen from other districts that might be and this descrition I did kind of a search in Iowa for a director of student services and it it's the one I fold from Dallas Center dmes they have a population I think like 2000 yeah 23 others something like that could you send us maybe um potential salary and things like that that we're looking into are we thinking in my view I was imagining this would be like an assistant principal type yeah director although they would be housed out of the main administration building so
we didn't even talk about where do they off that I don't know I would see them spending a lot of their time in every building I would too I mean because the qualifications we're looking for someone who has both a principal certification and also something about SP right yeah endorsement endorsement and administrative need to do any special endorsement for the language yeah prefer wrapped up that would be like and again my past experiences uh I've had on two different districts where I did have a director of student services they had that administrative degree and then sped indorsement they did do all of this so we didn't have a large E ESL population though so for you guys what it would mostly save you would be time in meetings and paperwork is like by law you
have to have an Lea a local education representative at all any any meeting any that's what they represent it's the district so uh they would probably still go to some of the IEPs not all of them the mdts um this uh director would probably go to those those are a little bit they're re-evaluations at the yearly IEPs it's a tradeoff I think more than anything the director for that sped piece of it they're really doing a lot of advising supporting teachers on you know I have a student with these Special Needs what do I do yeah what's out there and and they would be a resource like well on aware the aea as these Services they coordinate any of the UMP otpt which these guys do right which takes time any of that coordination of
services so what the sped part of this job is going to do which is Big isn't that the aea's B to help Link services to or how how come there how do they do that with them an inter you know intermediate person right now well I just asked isn't that what AA services do now like how are they doing it without the intermediate person right now like help like ANP yeah yeah AA they place people in our buildings to help with those Services how much though do you as an administrator if you have a uh one of your staff a special education teacher that needs help in an area do they come to you as an administrator first or they um going directly to their AA people mean how well is that connection or or
are you making those connections for them it can it can be both like if there's a paperwork question say we go to achieve and nobody understands it they go right to the AA people um if it's Aid question it could go both ways it just kind of depends on what the situation is I think the school is like super helpful with like like contacts with OT yeah and actually you rais a good point about the aeas is with there being this legislation that you know I I don't think it's going to look exactly like it does now but there are going to be significant changes to AA services and for us to sort of jump out a little bit in front of that and get a staff person who's going to help with to help
fill that gap of what aea isn't doing might actually be really strategic I mean in the survey it just seemed like a lot of services aren't maybe being utilized because they don't know what's available or what what they could do right but some of the stuff that is being used is the F support yeah I mean that's what's part about the the survey is because it it showed a small percentage of our staff that's utilizing it but you kind of we were to do a deeper dive probably the percentage that's using it is the right percentage it needs to be like right maybe the best way to say that right right yeah somebody pointed out to me like of course they don't use El L services but the people who are teaching elll are using
them constantly so yeah um no I I that was my thought is that this might actually be a very strategic time to also hire as you know there's some people who are available um in this role you whether we could afford them or not I don't know um but it it certainly um if there's changes and and also if we're changing in how it looks like we might be changing how we spend our dollars that come through so I would imagine this would qualifi for that if we wanted to divert a portion to a permanent role in The District yeah so so and this will be like my my last question I'm just trying to explore this from all sides but if I'm being hesitant about adding another administrative position because of course you know
that's what everybody says is that you know with the education just keeps adding administrators and um you know not having as many Educators so but if we needed to expand our administrative staff is this the direct most districts go it sounds like you were saying around our size is where districts start saying this is the most key position to have is that correct yeah yeah I I I really think it is because of just the different you know groups that need that additional support like your organization um I just looking at like Stacy she has close to 600 kids and she's you know one principal that's trying to do you know the administration of just that many kids and that much staff along with sped and ESL and any of those things a lot I
like the idea of having someone who is also who's like a a Content matter expert who has who has done sped I mean that's one of the things we're looking for instead of you know you guys I don't know what your backgrounds were before you became administrators but um you know may not have as much expertise and having someone who's actually done it that's good in my past I've been a sped director wow it was one role and position I was glad to kind of move on and move away from it's uh a lot of coordination it yes and then it's keeping up the sped laws and uh just kids that are in um special programs they're lots of times High needs um and trying to accommodate and provide any kind of service that meets
their needs can be exhausting and overwhelming for teachers and any other staff that works with them director or director of student services they're kind of that support person that kind of gets them through maybe a hard week um I I also appreciate the concern about sort of adding to our administrative load um and I'm just going to bring it up because I think it's something that we probably should address um you know with our TLC program we have had a position there that we did not fill in our TLC lead which I don't know that we necessarily consider that administrative but at the same time that was a position we took if we were to fill that now I think we would be taking a teacher out of the classroom putting that in this SCH
so I I think to be comprehensive I guess I would ask do we have intentions of um filling that are looking at that in the future and I I reached out to our board and administrators too what you know what is not being done in that capacity or is this the right direction to head in terms of bil the needs in our district if I asked that correctly but I would put that thought out there ling a lot on here I we haven't even had that discussion like how's it going without our TLC lead um again the principles and the instructional coaches they just kind of take care of things and do a good job of it never complains so I I I don't know where they're at I don't know that's fair this my
husband so I think he's invaluable [Laughter] should I I don't know I I guess that would be part of my question because when we talk about and I'm bringing that up because we have resources and our resources are important so many resources and um so looking at you know what we're doing with our resources and where we can best utilize them is important to me um if we're going to add this position and if we go oh my gosh you know we have this other position out here that we didn't fill that we need to fill that's another part of that sort of um those layers that are supporting our classrooms if that are not in our classrooms well it might be interesting to go through all this list of all the things that this
um the qualifications or that the duties that this person would have be interesting to go through and find out who's doing this right now and maybe it's not even being done and that might point out the need to have somebody like that I mean are things just getting pushed aside push aside time for it or I didn't know I had to do that or that might be interesting well so how would it be would it be reasonable then if Dr Johnson and her team got some of that information that you guys have asked for but we would want to be able to post for that like I would rather see it at the end of February if we can so that we could vote on this and get this posted so kind of an idea
who we have to keep in mind they're goingon to be gone this next week too so look but we have three weeks till our next meeting be right so like you're kind of looking for information like who takes care of the elll program who does the sped program I think I want to know like where these hours what what are we what are we gaining look here like how much time are they using devoted to that right now what um how's the resources being deed up currently and what's getting rid of that is that going to allow them to do with that time and what's the need there for that time somewhere else what's that extra time going to go to that makes sense now if that I don't know whether that could do I
don't want to over task you but so I'm I'm hearing Laura say like for example if that if we could come back and actually put an action item if if that is a demonstrated need to talk about at our work session in February so that then it can be posted that would be my preference I would rather get it out there sooner I know it's that time of year that's that's where I'm at too I guess unless we think we have enough information it l us obviously so we have an it's an action item it wasn't under discussion it was under action so we'll need to table someone we do need to table table a motion yeah where we're head I'm trying to be sure that that's what we want to do or for lack
of motion someone would have to make a motion then it die or someone can just table the motion table is can I table make a motion to table director of student services position there a second I'll second okay table a motion Jody G yes Jenny Jordan yes for the plane yes and chrisy thank you and thank you for your willingness to kind of that's going to be a little bit of responsibility on all of our administrators too to maybe look through that list and help support getting that information okay next item is our board policy Updates this is the second reading that have a chance to look at there's lots of pretty pink highlights and changes but that's a lot of stuff we're just required to do um I move that we approve all of
those I'll second reading of board policies Jenny Jordan yes for mclan yes Christy pellet yes J G yes okay next item is um a change order uh to United Construction Services for our storage building um recently looks like to me it was mostly Builder I don't know if anybody here would know that this the more fil dirt needed because the building size increased or is that something I mean can you nobody here probably knows that you just go in and say yeah we got enough top soil here or I mean because it it's changing by what 900,000 bucks don't know I thought it had a yeah it's 9900 something dollar I don't know if that was I don't know whether that wasn't included in the original for or whether it was just after I I'm
assuming I don't know Andy is there something there I didn't look at it to see yeah I wish I wish there had been a little note of why description yeah yeah it just says shortage of top so on site so okay Russell yeah Russell about it I'll make a motion to approve it I'll second La McLean yes Christy pellet yes J yes Jenny Jordan yes connections there so then the next item is the pay app number four for the storage building project number four out of this says subf final at the top I know we were getting close to having this wrapped up this came from the vendor from United construction said this was the subf final yeah it looks like kind of a small one it I would say we should receive one more
and that should be the plan okay I'll move to approve that pay up second Christy pet yes Jody Goodridge yes Jenny Jordan yes B mlan yes just looking struggling I guess we'll at the very end here oh yeah I did miss the consent item see yeah the8 y I was so excited to talk about those survey results we're g we're going to come back to that so um item D is the southwest Iowa Apex consortion agreement um something we do look annually sure it's an agreement um if it's it's linky but if you read through it it's uh a Consortium of other schools that we uh kind of work together for um um program called Apex and Apex is um kind of a behavior intervention program and location School for students that need that support
currently we don't have any kids that attend that but we are part of that Consortium and we want to stay part of that Consortium that that that allows us I did just want to check on the dates at the top it's listed as being for 2324 and it looks like theyve had signed it in July of 23 they did and then I knew and so they didn't get it to the right they didn't get it to me it was to Sarah's old email and so finally they contacted me and said you haven't signed that they thought they were talking to Sarah so it was just some confusion because I was new and so then they resent it to me and said this is what we sent you know be sending signing it again in July
pretty soon yeah yeah you'll be signing in now that but we haven't been using their services this year we have not been using they just wanted to keep us a part of that absolutely yeah it would have reached us had I not been new they knew my email just wonder all right I'll move to approve the Consortium second thank you we don't have Josh you got Christy pellet yes Jody Goodridge yes Jenny Jordan yes La mlan yes okay I will go back to the consent agenda that we um need to approve as always um you can go ahead and and pull anything out we did have the addition of um Julie van menen um she TI teacher as a resignation so if there isn't anything that you'd like to pull out I would entertain a
motion to approve I move we approve the consent agenda second hey chrisy pellet yes Jody Goodridge yes jeny Jordan yes for mle yes that concludes um all of our action items and our um consent agenda um move to upcoming dates um we do have our next meeting is our work session um and it looks like we're planning to be at the achievement Center for that so a little bit of a location change to make everybody aware of um in the conference room there and then we'll have our our next board meeting will be March 13th um but as we said there will be a couple of us going to the capital to Advocate with our legislators this next Tuesday um so finally uh we have an little evaluation question for the four of us and
that is did each of us make clear the rationale behind our decisions tonight as we discussed IR I thought we did great at that no us I yeah I appreciated having that question there it actually made me think about it more as we were working through to try to be like yeah are we making sure that we're clear and other people are clear on why we're making the decisions we do thank you for adding those of a nice little self check us yeah I think one meeting forgot or somehow we just missed it it's nice when they're there they don't have to be I was a little um concerned that I going to come up with those I didn't yeah I so thank you very much I was planning to but Beth just did it
and I'm GNA go okay that's good yeah so all right well um thank you very much with that I would take a motion to adjourn I'm Mo we adjourn second all in favor I and the meeting ised at 754 thank Youk you we don't have Josh the
