001okay we'll go ahead and call the meeting to order it is 602. let's rise for the Pledge of Allegiance I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all right thank you I move to amend the agenda to add e-d discussion E1 Master schedules E2 superintendent evaluation 53 22 2023 2024 social studies adoption 54 Biometrics opt-in opt out E5 trustee barbecue E6 summer lunch program second motion is second all in favor say aye aye any opposed hearing none the motion carries now I'll entertain a motion to approve tonight's agenda look to approve the agenda second Motion in the second all in favor say aye aye and you post hearing none the motion carries um

002moving into the discussion items that we did not get to on Monday's board meeting um we had talked about the master schedules just a smidge during the meeting and didn't know if it was sufficient enough so I put them on as the discussion item because technically we hadn't entertained those does anyone need to or want to have discussion on the secondary school's Master schedules no but I would like to see Timberlake middle schools in the same format as the other other ones just because that's the one I think I have the most concern about as far as plus sizes and kind of what's going on there yeah it's difficult yeah I'm curious when anyone else clicks clicks on the links are they getting security warnings yeah okay I didn't know if that was a new

003feature or if it was just I haven't been previously me neither I just did the last yeah okay this previous meeting was the first one that update uh it would be um the board book software yeah okay or it could be something on the network too but I doubt that you would be bored but is that snowball any other discussion we'd like to have on the master schedules um how about if we explain the actual layout of them So for anybody watching or that goes to um grab you know to look at him I mean so we sort of have like the room the teacher the room number if I'm looking at Timberlake High School and then the time that that period happens right and then uh whatever the the class is and then the

004number next to the class is the student account number yeah okay okay is slightly different than the two high schools so with lakeland's middle schools layout be sufficient for um yeah I think yeah because it does list the teacher the first period time slot the subject and children can yeah I yeah I like that one for the Middle School okay so it's actually East grade individually and then the classes that have kind of a mixed or teachers yeah the mixture of I wish a high schools kind of looked like this it's a lot easier to read yeah um Bob did you have something uh Timberlake High School those teachers who have a period that shows two classes within a rag there I'm assuming that's a first and second semester that's how I read it too

005okay so are you referring like if you scroll down to Lawler he has health and health all in one cell but it's split and one has a body count the other one doesn't yes okay and I'm going to assume that the um like how her classes are going to be the same the second semester so that's it and that's why it's first it's only one line just because our classes are going to be the same person second semester okay yeah health is just a semester class so that account could change okay so some did it and some did not is is that accurate okay yeah so you're like your geometry is a full year of course so they don't it's not separated into two but health is a is a semester course so okay it

006shows two because the second semester there will be a new body count in that second cell semester so for a lot I think um rather low enrolled classes at Tampa Bay ice ice 13. I mean it's a sweet deal for the teacher but yeah so it's not economically some of the um some of the higher level math classes are definitely smaller but even algebra some of the algebra one classes are not just regular um if it says Concepts we keep those numbers we try to keep those numbers under 20 because those are as a class of kids who struggle right with the algebra but um so let me do we have a quota limit or something I mean outside of class sizes there editing time do they say well if we don't have 20 enrolled

007in this then we're not going to offer it or if we don't have we haven't done it that way because once the Master's schedule is set it's it's hard to pull that class out because one you've got teachers who need to be teaching five periods and then you're rearranging the kids so one of the things that I think is unique at Timberlake when you have smaller student body smaller staff they still have to offer all of the credits that are required for graduation and that sometimes takes more staff to do that because you have to the kids have to be able to get into the different classes and still take all of their their normal core classes um when you look at Lakeland High School I know Mr Hoffman feels like we could definitely look

008at um they offer a lot of electives which [Music] brings down some of the numbers and some of the other classrooms So like um so Jimmy just feels like as we have some attrition at Lincoln High School instead of adding that staff back he can absorb it a little bit Yeah and um move some of the the electives that his core teachers are teaching to elective teachers and and also some of the numbers that way strategic math at Lakeland High School that's special education is that strategic English is as well correct okay yeah when I looked at the I mean that's the first thing I thought of when I saw the numbers I thought that was the only only thing it could be I was hoping anyways um but his numbers look a little bit

009better you know they've got they're around between 20 25. well algebra one for standards she she has most of her so the algebra 1C those are Concepts classes okay so her regular algebra class she's got 25 minutes but the others are those are those are small because we those are kids who struggle okay but they're smaller probably there's definitely smaller like you could almost take three of those classes and divide them into two and have the right now 18ish kids there looked at or some of them but what is what's a little bit concerning to me is that we have a need for four periods of algebra one Concepts that's a lot of kids that are coming into our high school that are not prepared to take the regular algebra class so that's that's more

010concerning to me than how much of a reflection is that a prayer a few years yeah that's exactly what that is the last six seven years of math instruction but this does give us kind of a starting place and as we start looking at budget at the end of this year and how we're going to deal with some of the budget issues you know one of the things in a budget works out but it relates to this is um we are down 130 students this year last year to this year this year right or this time last year to now and um the former CFO actually budgeted for more units I asked him to budget flat and he budgeted for more so that's going to impact our revenues obviously one of the things that how

011much time you spent with principals you know that are doing master schedule but as they look from one year to the next in order to create to build that Master's schedule something is happening when they build that that allows these classes to come in as small as they are in something you know when I used to do that kind of thing you know I would I would roll the grade forward have obviously and distributed over starting with the ELA and math and then on from there but create only as many sections as as would be necessary you know to cover the total number of our students they had to make sure how careful they are in doing that part of what it has a lot of this it will be part of the work in

012the early spring as we're starting to look at budget and Staffing because um you know when I worked with with principals in doing that I mean typically they would have to bring that master schedule in in the spring are and appeared it was an issue numbers I did that with Lakeland High School but we did it in the summer instead of been starting in the spring so that's time that's on the books for this year whatever culture they're building uh Amazon so I could color it up and do my thing yeah well let's look at it yeah well I would do uh you know at this stage of the year you know I would take colored pencil and to take a print copy of this use green and red for more red is maybe too

013many to get a kind of a visual I don't know this is fitting together did I see two prep periods for the Homeland teachers I think there was or shouldn't everybody just has one there shouldn't be anybody with more than one okay let's see I think it was I think I know what you're talking about though it was in this spreadsheet it was next to each other but I think because I it jumped out at me too um I think a third grade prep at fourth grade class whatever it is oh it's in the electives at Lakeland Middle School oh okay Lakeland middle school teacher says home economics prep in Hallmark and then home economics why he would have had to ask that question and what is the ad prep um the 80. so in

014the remember in the negotiated agreement there the 80s at the middle level have two periods that they're not teaching that they are using for their their activities during their time wow so they get two of those preps and a prep to basically they're only teaching at halftime yeah I didn't know we agreed to that okay that does help to have a visual mm-hmm secondary schedules obviously are much harder than it's really easy to evenly distribute your elementary kids right right um Charter at the high school level the other issue I see is you know maybe there's some balance problems here and then I know that can be problematic for example the social studies says 16 23 18 19 and then 31. are you looking at Lakeland Middle School yeah yeah so I don't know if

015it's there you know making an effort to try to balance that as we get underway yeah the one right below it does same thing yeah yeah there's an Ela with nine kids um no which teacher Smith that's special education yeah even some of those I'm wondering if there was I mean I guess it depends on what they need and what services they're getting created there was some kind of way to it we've been consolidate some of those as a and I think it just depends on how many so the way they've got this broken out Roberta Whitey is the seventh grade special education teacher and then Jacob writer is the eighth grade special education teacher and Heather Smith has does lots of things but she's also covering sixth grade special education so there must not

016be as many special education kids at sixth grade um because I only see one which is interesting I'm going to see one classroom seventh grade you know it's pretty well balanced yeah white swings are happening oh Carrie Murphy also special education for six six sorry I missed that so Heather's taking one group of ela kiddos yeah because it might be even if some of those other ones like at the high school level or whatever but could be Consolidated and then you know if the teacher obviously the teacher needs to work can they come down to the Middle School level and pick up you know they were where we have bigger class sizes I mean I guess if there's room to make another class that's the other thing we run into you know is that there's

017room to do that or to move kids around or something yeah social studies seventh grade is really large the entire seventh grade class is really large and so I actually went over and talked to the principal and just said what did we need to do about some of these numbers um you know when you look at how many open spots we have at Lakeland Middle School at sixth grade and how many we have at eighth grade and then seventh grade's way over the number that we should have right do we have I just asked do we have a sixth grade teacher who can teach seventh grade for part of the day do we have eighth grade teacher who can teach so they were moved this is actually better than it was um uh the clerk

018was a little bit nervous because when we were getting ready for the board meeting Monday I didn't have this because they were moving kids and so they were trying to get this as accurate they're still moving some kids so this was going to change still a little bit more but they were moving people around and trying to fix that 30 kids in the seventh grade math class yeah there's a lot of kids not insurmountable but it's a full blown and to have two of those in a day right in social studies I mean that's 30 30 31. you know 30 kids keyboarding I think I don't know that that would be I guess it depends on the group of kids you know right yeah I'm not too sure yeah you know I've taught was yeah

01930 plus kids in classrooms and I'm more comfortable with 30 kids in a social studies classroom than I am December really Ela I worry a lot about our our teachers and the amount of grading that they are required to do because of all the writing kids do and when you have large class sizes and that can be true in math too I mean it's a really good doing a good job and correcting a lot of papers and giving feedback on right their product their math processes yeah I'm trying to pay attention to those that they've identified that need the attention and yeah yeah it's hard to pull kids aside and provide a little extra instructions that's where the table comes in great because you can get your groups going and these guys will sort of

020work on their own while you as long as it's quiet I mean some people are fine with noise well I appreciate seeing these yeah you know important piece of work I agree that the principle does and then balancing classes as the school year opens it's important as well is this something that because I don't think we've ever brought these to the board in the past this is something that you would just like as a recurring at the beginning of this here to see to see sense that we would bring him every fall yeah this is what I asked for four years ago yeah it was one of those things this and demographics understanding just that what does the school look like you know as far as the members the classes the teachers you know a

021lot of the other stuff we can just pull online right what's reported to the state or the feds but um yeah and why is the strength class so large at what school are you looking at um who is this this is the one that's not named I don't know who it is uh oh I'm sorry it's Timberlake I lied Timberlake High School yeah um yep and it's uh Kane in gym they've got 45 45 40 29 30. when I see those numbers all I can think about are all those stipends that when they if they have so many kids in the class but they don't apply to the sports detective yeah PE teachers okay yeah so I have a question um and there are two teachers in the gym it does uh reflect on the

022stipends but like we have a teacher teaching um seventh period I believe which I moved to school are you in the middle school they so their seventh go ahead um student yearbook seventh eight it's their seventh period and she's been stipend for it in addition to her full salary when she's supposed to be working through seventh period as well she's um because on the negotiated negotiated agreement there is a stipend at 5.7 percent yep for a yearbook I I because I understand that they do a lot of work outside of contract time so that's the class that's the time when the kids are sitting and working in editor or whatever but the teacher does a lot of work on outside of contract time to make sure things are formatted correctly and on so that the

023yearbook publishes the way it's supposed to this is the class period that the teacher actually does the work outside the seventh and eighth grade or at the junior high level they're taking a lot of the pictures and stuff for yearbook because students don't necessarily have the skills so they're going to activities after school to okay yeah there's definitely a lot of time outside of that's just one of the things that I was like wait a minute I know we keep stipending things and when and it's our contracted time yeah yeah and that's where it's like why are we stipending people for working and doing the jobs that they can hire to do um and I I do understand what they're saying so thank you for the clarification Is there further discussion for the master schedule

024oh I really appreciate uh yeah I'd like to see Timber likes on this stuff myself a note and I think it may be beneficial to coordinate when you're reviewing with when it's brought to the board preferably before school starts so I don't know if that can be shifted around I know it won't happen so bring the drafts in the spring when I principles because that's that's ideally I think that's when we should be looking at it because that's when we're talking about Staffing right yeah which impacts budget exactly and if we don't have a full picture it's really hard to just shoot numbers of the dartboard yeah so if I started working with the principals in March rolling people up I could bring it to the board in April and that would still give us

025time to make some decisions about how many positions we're going to open for opening so the earlier the better because you know how it is our quite gets so full with everything else that the more time we have the better we are so I I'll I'm gonna aims to bring the draft to you in March which actually I think is a little bit better because it would give you an idea prior to us for starting IBB with what the staffing needs are going to be and how much money is going to be allocated so you're getting sick so let's put my mask on oh gotcha okay it's that paint yeah can I ask one more that's our funny question yeah um is it helpful if we bring the draft master schedule in March or April

026um preferably March so you can kind of see what the roll-up looks like and what the staffing needs to look like then does it also make sense to bring it back to you in the fall after the event the final numbers are so you can see where we landed so we want it in both okay okay theoretically we should have a rolling history of being able to compare all of that somewhere you know so you can see year over year you know yeah right exactly okay so to the September board meeting that's good planning document moving on to the superintendent evaluation we need to pick a date that we can go over the superintendent rules and if you um if one of you would just share with me the new copy for this year's evaluation

027so I can put the goals in there would be great okay shall we pick a date in October sure okay um I'll be out of town until the 10th of October well I'll be back for the meeting okay we'll be back regular meeting yeah I'll be out back on the night okay does anybody else have any obligations on the that October 10th yeah that well that second week of October I think I wouldn't plan you can just sit here um I I am actually going down to Boise um they're having they're they've invited superintendents go down but uh superintendent Crutchfield is going to roll out some plans okay um that we're gonna need to know about and so I'm I'm going it's um up in the Lincoln Auditorium so there will be legislators there so

028I'll be there I'll be back Thursday night so I'm here on the 10th would we like to do with the 16th no I have an obligation well you can certainly do it is that what they did I'm just thinking if we run it on the 10th and while we're trying to implement new measures to get meetings in a more timely manner fashion if we come right back to 10th I think we'll just I don't know that we'll be up for it and then for her leaving on the 11th I don't think she needs to be like stressed over it um I don't I don't this is just kind of talking about my whatever works for you guys how much time will I tell you five minutes nothing it really takes five minutes um yeah when

029do you come back speeding [Laughter] um are you expecting a heavy agenda we're at the regular meeting we never expected heavy agenda and then because okay let me just do that Friday the 13th email in October yeah we could do it at six o'clock and then I'll be over to Lakeland High School for the homecoming game we have barbecue that night okay oh gotcha is it back can you guys do mornings do mornings work and we're only talking about half an hour I know you love it I can't I can make it work um are we trying not to add a half hour executive session to our regular how about Monday the 16th no go for it right 17 17. geez Bob it's already gonna have priorities all right why don't we tentatively plan for

030it for the board meeting the agenda is out of hand then it will have to be about to have another meeting yeah which I think we're going to have to do anyways go back to what we were doing before well I mean if we're gonna get you know really I mean cover what we need to cover and you know not be here until you know the next work day exactly you know I do didn't have to do I think we need to do all of like the business like the bill everything that the office needs to pay the bills stay functioning one time and then all the other stuff that comes up maybe later in the month whatever needs to be I mean that's what I'm thinking would probably work you know uh Monday night's

031meeting if we hadn't had the executive session would have or yeah it would have been done around that um right a normal time but I'm just being executive sessions to their own meetings with for students needs to which we need to do that anyway because we yeah so so we'll tentatively schedule it for can't does it work for the board I know it pushes you a little bit could we start executive session at 5 30 so that we are ready to start oh I'm absolutely fine with that yeah I just yeah okay I have to just make sure that I'm leaving walking out the door at five because instead of well there's just one more thing I know I can just get it done I know I do that all the time everybody's like we're

032leaving okay see you in the morning okay make sure you go home okay for the ninth we'll go ahead and we'll do we'll start at 5 30. the next item is the social studies adoption yeah we just wanted to give the board an update because with all the other adoptions we've already come to you with kind of here's what's happening um uh so we wanted to update you we even with the new Ela adoption that we just purchased there are stories within the anthologies that we are not going to be using because we've gone through and embedded those and just felt like nope this is for example there's a whole unit in the first grade book about world religions and one of the activities is they're using a Venn diagram to compare Islam and Muslim

033and there's no way our parents are going to want us talking about world religions with six-year-olds right so we're not doing that and this series is really heavy history so it's got really some really good stuff but we've gone through and pulled out the things that we just don't feel like work for our community um we're very concerned about what social studies adoptions are going to look like because if we go in with any mainstream publisher we're going to end up with a lot of things that we're not going to want to put in front of kids so we have um Lynn has worked with Rebecca and we have reached out to companies and asked us that we've asked them to send us their fifth grade textbook because if we're going to see critical race

034Theory we kind of assume it's going to be in that fifth grade textbook for sure and so if we can't purchase the fifth grade textbook we're not looking at the program and so we're trying to do some vetting before we get the whole group together and bring things to them one of the curriculum that we're going to look at is the Hillsdale 1776 curriculum because that one at least we know is going to be something that we can put in front of our kids but I just we just wanted you to know that we are moving forward with it but we're taking a little bit more time than we have with the others because we just don't want to put a lot of time and effort into it and then we picked three that we

035like and find out the two are not even we can't even buy right yeah so the Hillsdale approved by the state um that's a good question I don't know I can reach out and ask I believe so that's what I've been told that I've been told by not the state people so I'm gonna check with him okay and the Hillsdale um that in particular is all online they don't have actual right but we can we I mean we were going to spend money to buy textbooks so we can spend money to send them to a company and have them print them and buy them so that we have books that please will not be as much as buying a textbook but in my mind that's the better route to go than to buy a textbook

036that we can only use Parts seasonal stuff because we can't pages on it yeah exactly Yeah well yeah because even if it's in there right we can not teach it but kids can go home and read it yeah and or parents happen to see it and they think yeah yeah what do you guys doing things that were yeah so so we're trying to not even to have it exactly so we're trying to be very careful I just want the board to be aware we may only be able to bring into 1776 curriculum program um we don't have to use means in curriculum that's just because it's approved or it's you know peer-reviewed all I mean I'm just knowing the history of where that all came from to begin with it's all you know it's sort

037of like the uniform building code you know so people got together and decided they were it and then everybody said yeah you are you're it okay whatever they say goes right my thing is this it doesn't necessarily you know all the garbage aside it doesn't necessarily matter um where it comes from as long as they're learning from it and the test scores prove it I don't care what it is if if it's creating that much of an impact on my education to where they're drafted and understanding it and the scores prove it I mean who cares where it came from right and it doesn't have all the garbage in it right that's my bigger issue yeah and your social textbooks are a higher risk for that so that sort of thing oh yeah absolutely right

038oh absolutely yeah which is taking the extra time we just didn't want you to think we were had dropped a ball and we're moving it Forward we're just taking our time as thorough as we can so that we're not wasting the committee's time by having them look at things that there's no way we could bring to the board as a recommendation yeah um yeah there's a few of those places out there um right here so what's the other one out of Chicago um okay their name either but they have similar uh Heritage was the other one other one yeah they have um similar curriculum you know it's a shame I looked recently at Dr Ed Hirsch's stuff but it's been taken over by the newer generation and they've just ruined the curriculum because he had

039a very good educational philosophy all of his curriculum for all was free all of it all you had to do was print it you know um and there was a school in Spokane using it but they've unfortunately went same way everybody and they've done it really back I mean I was shocked because he they used to be pretty solid and safe but what I liked about the 1776 curriculum is The Kindergartners and first graders are interacting with the U.S Constitution and the Declaration of Independence and instead of world religion instead of world yeah well that's the thing and not only that it's so interwoven into everything but you're saying social studies all that but it doesn't matter what grade because what they've done is they even the little stories like in the math books and

040all that yeah they they sneak it in everywhere and it might be a simple thing it might just be the art depiction you know um where they pick it up or you know it's just the story problems and it's yeah sad that they're spending that much time trying to train little brains to think a certain way and all we want to do is have a tool that teachers can use to teach the concepts that we need to teach and teach and we have to spend this much time going through what's actually in the book anyway that's why it's on there we just wanted to update you on thank you for the update on the social studies adoption um next I asked to talk about the Biometrics opt-in off doubt this year when Food Services uh

041I guess at the start of the year they send a letter out to parents and the letter said if you don't want Biometrics used then you need to opt out and we've sort of set the Precedence but no everything is an opt-in for parents because I didn't even know we did Biometrics but um it's it's scanning the thumb event but there were a few parents that are like why are you doing this to my kid why are you making my kid do it this way well I do understand the E's because children lose things and it is faster but I also understand the concerns from parents with where technology is and so I was a little concerned that food services just sent out their letter and there was no basically oversight from the district on

042this one out so I think we need to have that revised did we need to let Chartwells know you have to put opt-in on your stuff and if the child's not opted in then you use their name yeah you use their name before some other yeah yeah and I already had that conversation before Kevin so he knows that that's we just missed that form so yeah um yep moving forward it will be an opt-in perfect then um the trusty barbecue we were supposed to hit this Target in August and we didn't um you know life is busy for all of us now school started and there's Friday night Sports and so what do we want to do with this how about next August the order of the spring okay for a holiday dinner that's why

043I was thinking like a Thanksgiving I love that too did December gets crazy with everybody's awesome um holiday parties and stuff but maybe Thanksgiving something November I think that would be kind of cool to do just sort of a Thanksgiving you know we're thankful for them and um really thinking about what Thanksgiving really is for so okay so instead of a barbecue would everyone feeling bored with only a Thanksgiving Fiesta because oh my gosh is it Mexican tacos are awesome always that's right I'm going to do tacos for tacos for turkeys does that sound good for everyone yeah okay do we want to pick a date now so that we don't get caught in November going oh yeah we're gonna do something I mean we did pick the month but we didn't um is there

044a particular place that we want to hold have our dinner um well I'm just gonna let everyone know I won't be here she has a baby for the whole month of the I am leaving November 8th regardless of election results I'm leaving November 8th and I won't be back till December 1st she's a grand baby well then why did you choose November well like I said I was caught up in the moment I thought that was a great idea what if we did a what if we did a Thanksgiving like we're thankful for our celebration later after the holiday season um or I don't feel like you're doing October October is good yeah it's a harvest month Oktoberfest there you go let's have October that would be fun football seven more at the fairgrounds that

045yeah I'm just October October 5th on the 7th of October well we could do something later and be like a like Halloween schnitzel we could do a costume party dude Friday Friday October 27th does that work please come from the field Friday October 27th do we have any games on that day no will any boys be headed to State okay over what 27th or girls I shouldn't just because I don't know what soccer's agenda is cool still football season though is it still football season do we have home game that night sure should be on our calendar we do right well we don't have Timberlake stuff on our calendar we only have like but I'm still working on that oh that's all that matters Timberlake Senior High School let's look at their Athletics do we

046feel that holding something on a Saturday would not be as Saturday turnout I don't know either I'm shooting in the dark here but I think beer and brats will bring people so 10 27th Timberlake is away 10 27 Timberlake's away it's just it's the board and our spouses right oh that's what we talked about I thought it was supposed to be for the teachings oh kind of a bonding thing just yeah okay we can do that at Kelsey you can go to the liking bar that's right that's where the old timers that's close to my house down before I guess four orders aboard and their spouses and all the administrative editor and director staff and their spouses where did you hold this because are you going to host no that's actually not that time of

047year that's a lot of people oh we could I could ask my wife about getting a boardroom I Resort upstairs yeah smaller boardrooms they do and they they'll cater and everything okay we used to do that for my work parties she'd set it up and yeah I can see those little ham food and stuff just sitting there and okay come down she had a bathroom a magician and a clown a magician DJs and Lake cruises and oh yeah we can do a link Cruise too you know that would have been a fun thing to do in August yeah we could hire Carl oh did you yeah what Carl Lewis oh wow wow good job that's awesome 59 congratulations congratulations yeah wow yesterday oh happy anniversary how old were you when you got married after friends

048their parents were married or very young I think they were 14 and 18 or I don't know something like that and they had 65 plus years before that's awesome he passed away first yeah so Dave you're going to talk to your wife and see what you can work out for us okay yeah I mean it was always a good time neither high school has a home game the weekend of the 27th of October 27. Friday the 29th or Friday the 27th or 6th we'll see what uh yeah see what they have opened we might have to work around schools um because it depends on where they're going we've cut back on that because of the amount of mileage we're laying in the travel and it's really supposed to be that the home team just has

049the administrator on duty and so they are they've cut back and said about sweet s we'll go to the Coeur d'Alene Beach we'll go to Post Falls sorry you don't want to exclude anyone right yeah I don't um there aren't any games sorry Timberlake is away yeah but I didn't see one at all for like so uh time of day dinner yes email reminder yes I've got something to think about for the future though they have the Costco I think it was uh we looked yesterday was twelve hundred dollars to charge Foods we could probably get it I'm not inclusive meal of course that's not bad very large group right well we've got 20 some administrators yes I think so it's the administration and the board yeah and then so administrators directors directors okay everybody

050maintenance you're kind of including all those who were somewhat directly with the board yeah some time or another cool all right so you'll look into it and report back to us probably we could probably get a free Cruise too actually you know what I mean yeah remember Carl Lewis right remember Carl yeah he's a captain for on one of them oh he's the boat man oh is he now yeah he runs a hole because he'll move it a few years ago yeah cool then you guys can go down and get a massage too afterwards or maybe before depending on what day we're doing okay and then lastly so we'll need a quorum notice for massages the last item I asked was the summer lunch program because last year um we did the summer lunch we

051brought it back and I my biggest thing was well why are we not up at the North as well as down here and we had I thought this year we were going to do it here in the north but we didn't we just did it here again so I did some checking okay um the last time we did it up north um we the we only had 13 people per day eating so we lost money and actually if we don't run summer base next year Jessica said it we we lost a lot of money this year because we weren't we didn't run summer Basin so we didn't we weren't the only time we actually had enough people to break even with the summer food program at Lakeland Middle School was the three or five days

052that the wrestlers were at Lakeland High School for their camp so we lost money this year on the summer food program oh really but that's why we didn't do it up north because we haven't the two or three years that we did it up there we just there's not enough and part of that I think is half of the kids in North Timberlake High School are from Apple and they can't get there right um and the elementary kids don't walk over there sorry so it's something that we can ponder you know we've got three base programs now and we can staff some base then it makes sense to run it here because we definitely have the participation well I think it might be who the board to actually see the numbers from the last three

053to five years of what what numbers are we looking at because we grow I mean we just keep consistently growing and how and how well were the people notified that it was there because I knew I copied right you could have as much food as you could make people right you know so but everybody knew well that it was there you know yeah yeah well I was just thinking and Gathering the numbers you're gonna have but even before covid um the numbers up north weren't great so I will ask Jessica and Kevin to pull like the 20 the 18 the 19. and then the 22 and this year numbers so for up north and down here so you can kind of see what those are I think I want to see the Copic numbers too

054just okay yeah we know we're aware that they're going to be weird yeah so 2018 through 2023. okay I will get those to you and we'll have those for October now we can move into the Sip work session um so I filled out the metrics part it's really horrible we need to focus on focus on um and I put in there what our targets were and then what our actual performance was so you can see that and then we have to set our targets together the four-year cohort graduation rates numbers I'm struggling to get why they haven't like finalize them they went through the grad great great appeal and they haven't released them yet so we have the targets oh I'm sorry I could have put the Targets in there I mean we're trying to

055get the actuals um 2022 targets graduation rate um so our Target that we chose last year for graduation weight was 95 percent and they haven't released where actual performances because they had the window open for grad Reed Appeals not yet when do we have to have this in October what is it first okay yep at least a draft we can I can bring it back to the board at the October board meeting and we can tidy it up and then I can send them that actual that draft tested in by the first the other thing is and I don't know maybe it just never got updated but still on the district's website it's still a very very old 2020 sip plan yeah I don't I I know we I sent it to him he had

056talked about it and all that because I was I wanted to look at it today to sort of look at you know where we were and I also pulled up what some of the other districts were doing and um but yeah it was old out there we updated every year 2 23 yeah so um we just have to identify what we want our Target to be for this cohort of kiddos for the graduation yep I would assume we wouldn't want it any lower than the prior year but I don't know where these kids are I guess we could look at the data and see um and what was the state's averaging they're at like 82 percent rate well I know last year which I guess so you did put these numbers in but the growth

057was supposed to be consistent and like stranded three percent straight across the board going down we're not doing that so I I didn't want to make that assumption because the board gets accepted except the targets um I know that uh Mountain View's graduation rate last year was right around 90 percent um and Lake London Timberlake are usually higher than that so I'm in I'm anticipating our final rad rate is going to be 95 or higher as a district members yeah they haven't updated it since 21. no because when we came back to school they opened the grad rate appeal window and so they had to go to the admin assistants had to go through and look at because remember this is the cohort graduation rate so this is looking at the Freshman four years ago

058how many of those freshmen stayed with us and graduated and if we can't say Johnny left and went to you know Salt Lake City and we don't have documentation of that then Johnny counts against us as a Dropout even though he may have gone somewhere else and gone to school so we have to have documentation every time a kiddo withdraws withdraws from our high schools we ask the parents to document are you homeschooling are you do you know where you're moving when they when they go to a new school if we get the records request we can put that in the documentation so they have to go through and pull their written documentation for every one of those kids that the state's identifying as a as a dropout and we haven't gotten since that window

059closed we have not gotten the updated graduation rates and uh the 96 the 95-96 90 plus percent that you're you're talking about is is not the cohort it's no it's just that 90 percent of mountain View's senior class graduated last year so yeah well that was this last spring so the number you're seeing and I well you're not seeing that was our Target was 95 . yeah they have to account for anybody who left between their freshmen and their senior year I don't think it started they hold it against us so we can't have numbers because we stayed in school the whole time and we can't help it that nobody else did but they we can't have numbers and that doesn't even we get nothing for that you know the kids get nothing for that

060you know that's just kind of a student please whether he goes out of school or goes to Salt Lake City but we have no verification right right yeah that's not our ultimately account form fine but yeah there's no way to account for them great but yeah and why is the automatic assumption that it's Dropout yeah yeah the default is drop out yeah unless you confirm otherwise well I think they should have to prove that they've dropped out I mean who makes those rules the state at what level though I mean this state superintendent or I'm not sure if that was I don't know if it was the state board that said the parameters if that I don't there's no statutory language that's that's how they're doing it right um but it's either the state department

061state board one of those two groups came up with the rules for habit determine what was the percentage in Spring before the appeals right Mountain View graduated 90 of their seniors um Lakeland and Timberlake probably graduated 98 of their seniors okay maybe in higher Timberlake graduated 100 of their seniors Jimmy might have had one or two kids at Lakeland that didn't walk but may have graduated this summer so our numbers are really high but again it's the I know Jimmy had 20 kids that he had to go back and find documentation for Ryan didn't have as many maybe 10 still cut a lot our asthma systems are really good though yeah I was going to say maybe they should be keeping a file when those happen so that they don't have to go back and

062dig for them oh they have the file like a separate file so they don't have to go back and find them where okay there's a copy where you would dig and find them but here's a file that has only those items in it yeah that's what they do so they have a file every time somebody withdraws from our school for that year in terms of they have a file on that and and they do ask the parents to sign whether they're homeschooling moving to a different school so we can use that as part of our documentation Okay so that's one of the reasons I think our rates are so high is we do our work on the front part instead of trying to track people down what would you like your target to be for

063graduation the 23 cohort it was out last year's numbers are being able to look back a few years and see where these kids are yesterday from your data I would say you know 95 I don't know so let me look um 21 22. in 2122 all students 92.2 percent graduation rate for Lakeland ring 22 22. do you know what we had on last year's sip I'm um so that's what I'm looking at so on the um our 2223 performance Target was 95 okay um our our performance Target for 21 22 was 92 and our actual performance in that year was 92.2 so we hit our Target right um our Target for last year was 95 I'm showing our we hit 93.1 for for your cohort for class of 21. oh because I'm on the state's

064report card and they don't have 22 listed so I I have their so I have their report that they sent out that's interesting they haven't updated their website yeah so but 21 we had 94. 22 99 you know 20 weeks in 21 we had 93.1 oh 93 okay and then this last year we were last year I don't know what the cohort looks like but no I'm sorry I meant 22. we were 92.92 so we dropped so we dropped that percent but yeah I mean that's coming out of coke 21 22 was the postcovid year for us so if kids left during the 2021 school year and we didn't because we were out and we didn't get that documentation we couldn't have proven where those kids were because it's yeah that's just so ridiculous because

065it's not even accurate it's like why keep numbers that aren't even correct let's just look at their graduation rate by the year how many kids graduated this year I think we should hold it at 95 yeah that's what I was thinking yeah I mean sure the obvious Target is so last year our Target was 95. okay so I'm just curious why we put in 86 where we didn't on this 2223 performance Target it says 86 percent yeah why did you say that where did you get back you're under examples I think oh yeah okay I was like what because I'm looking at her oh there's extra okay I'm looking at ours there you go it's under the mattress oh there we are oh yeah I was like oh my God you guys there's purple mine's

066blue and then just as a reminder the state's document we added that last column on the right where it says actual performance because they just had us put our targets and we never showed it the public when our actual right what we what we actually did so we added uh um but I went back and looked at our 20 22 23 Sip and we didn't have the actual performance in there for grad rate either because we hadn't gotten the number so I just actually put it in there so we have it to look back at um in my live document okay so 95. yep and I'm thinking the math and the ELA off the top of my head I I don't think we should change anything we should just leave it again just carry the

067same because those are we had all new math all new yep you know the reading and language all of that was well we're not quite there no um right with any of them so I think it would be silly to move Beyond where we're not quite reaching yet right so just keep our performance targets the same I think so I I agree with Ramona then there's a lot of change you know this makes my stomach hurt that we're saying that we're our Target is 39 yeah but go look at the data yeah so yeah these numbers don't I mean that's what's so frustrating about it is that they're not a true representation it's like we had a hundred kids and 98 graduated it's 98 you know no no you can't count for those two or

068four or however many you don't get to count we showed up for two freshmen bless you yeah and then left I don't know where they went okay so section two literacy proficiency um so this is the iri well we surpassed in the spring grade two spring iri so that one should definitely should be increased yep I think it should be increased to 70 what we met yeah yeah I want some good news so we just took the fall iri and you know we made we did make some changes to what we were requiring teachers to do with regard to instruction last year for foundational reading and our kids are coming in higher in the fall than they have in the past so there's some retention retention through the summer that's awesome but um Betty Kiefer

069scores and almost 20 percent higher at every grade level it's amazing what they're doing so except what I think we should do is thought here so for grade one that should be 74 because that's what kindergarten came in at 70. [Music] 69. yep because by all account those grades should bump up to that percentage because of yep and they're getting more instructions so we should maintain our kids who were proficient and actually add some so then for this year's kindergarten class that's really kind of the only one we need to think about I would just keep it because it's 74 yeah oh yeah yeah well we actually ended up kindergarten ended at seven this year's kindergarten or 74 percent but we were the target was 76 so it might be smarter to raise that one

070I mean to keep it at 76 or around about there yeah because that's a good Target to achieve for the incoming grade yeah we want the success teachers yeah and they are improving well who knows but we are trying to turn everything around and now we have the tools in their hands so they should be able to yeah we're seeing some improvement this fall which is very exciting good so so with us thank you for doing that everybody else is not doing and why are they not doing it because there's pushback yes well there should be no business right I agree it's no choice the reason we're seeing improved scores this year is because I we we gave them a directive last year there you don't get to push back anymore yeah you will use

071these programs and we're seeing that they're worked are retaining the information yeah but Betty kiefer's been doing it for a while while so Betty kefir's always used boac since 1995 or six when it was adopted and so it's just a natural part of how they teach kids how to read that so that part was is really solid then they added the really great reading which is the the one piece that boec lacks is the um is reading and text and phrase reading it's really just the isolated phonics instruction so really great reading gives them some practice with the and they teach it exactly the same way the phonics part so it's it's a it's a really strong practice and then we added Hagerty which is the phonemic awareness piece because we didn't have that in

072any of our programs so Betty Kiefer the this year's third graders were the first kindergarten class at mediciefer to get that those three programs married it's the strongest instruction that we've ever had and so you can see that like our this year's so the last year's first graders this year second graders fall scores that Beta key for their 77 proficient already wow everybody else is 50ish so there's I mean you can't discount the data anymore you just cannot correct so today when we were talking about reading instruction and Betty Kiefer said please don't make us give up what we've been doing and use the new reading program with Fidelity because we don't know that the phonics instruction is as strong as what they're doing and so I said you don't have to you're at school

073you're dead you're demonstrating that you your kids are learning to read at a really high rate and they really wanted to see it through to see what their third grade scores look like this year because that's the group that they started with so that's that's the point at which uh it's a critical thing is exactly yeah exactly but we've got 71 percent of income and first graders have been cheaper we're proficient on the fall test and 77 of second graders wow and the third graders haven't finished testing yet so we didn't have that but there's a significant difference between what the other five schools have for their income scores but they're better than they've been so we're making some progress my concern is we have a new Ela program and they want to just use

074the new program in its entirety and we don't know for sure how strong the phonics program is so we're going to monitor that very closely well I'm yeah who I am yeah we already know what works so there would be no monitoring to anything we already know what that's what I don't understand why do we keep doing the same thing over and over and over and think it's gonna it's not we have a model the model works so guess what to have continuity across the district and to be the best that we can be we implement the model now if they can come up with another model here's my challenge come up with another model that beats the model that we have and then we'll look at it that was but in the meantime that's

075what I said today yeah they didn't like that yeah well you know there's all kinds of other schools and school districts there's lots of people that need jobs we have children that need to read and write and know how to do math yeah absolutely yeah because where the bottom line is is whether we like it or we don't like it the the student suffers you know and we don't work for you know it's we work for the public it's their tax dollars it's their children some instances the teachers children um but that's when we have something that works why would you not want to do that because you didn't think it up because you didn't have a hand in it no we're supposed to be here to provide the best education we can possibly provide

076and that's actually our reward right when we can say no look at this you know here's our third graders here's our eighth graders here's you know right look at this that's the return on our text right yeah absolutely and that's that's the proof that we actually know what we're doing right and you know we can make excuses and we already know like some of these numbers are ridiculous like graduation whatever but we know internally what's working right and that's what we should be striving collectively to do is the thing that works not repeating what doesn't work and why the education system ever got away from phonics I have no idea I do not know how anybody reads without having well I know right I know they read by sight and they come to a word

077they don't right now by sight they can't read it right yeah I know 60 year old adults that can't sound out words because when they went to school there was no phonics you know so we should never be teaching reading or recognition of consonants and vowels and blends diphthongs whatever you'd want to throw out there without phonics I mean that's just we should we should never want to commit I 100 agree with you the good news is Lynn and Norma did take the new amplify phonics scope and sequence and they've set it side by side with boac they are very similar they their sequence of instruction is a little bit different but they do do they do focus on the six syllable types all of the great it's the science of reading everything we know

078about brain science is in there um what's what isn't quite as strong I think is just like boak is so scripted that if you if as a teacher I didn't know what the rule was for when you use CK boak tells you what the rule is um Lynn and Norm I haven't dealt that deep into the lessons yet to see how much information teachers are given so that if you don't know what you don't know you don't know what to bring to the kids where boak gives it all to you so um what they're doing is what they're going to be doing is working with the principles and looking at those things side by side so if they're using the amplify phonics program because it ties to the spelling and the grammar and everything that

079goes into the whole lesson right um that we're making sure that we're using the boac program to supplement and that we're using the bobac instructional strategies which are the is the part that is the strongest for the program because it's completely tied to the brain research so we're not letting them willy-nilly make those decisions um it's it we're all kind of marching all together but the expectation is they're all using Hagerty which is the phonemic awareness piece they're all teaching phonics using the boac instructional model following the Amplified scope and sequence and filling in where they need to Betty Kiefer is changing nothing and doing what they have been doing because they want to see what the results are for that third grade class and we had principals today who were mad at me about

080letting them do that um and they they talked about the implementation dip and that's not fair to compare their scores to what Betty Kiefer is going to get because they won't have an implementation dip and I just said that you shouldn't either because you should be using the moax strategies to teach your phonics it doesn't matter what the program is it's you you but the problem is is they haven't been teaching the Rolex so we probably will see an implementation dip because they're not as versed into this so some of the others are you comfortable you have all the principles on board with that now okay 85 percent it's going to be a workout our goal is 100 I know yeah I 100 agree with you and I they were not happy with me today

081because I'm this this is an area where I'm not on accidentally right outside yes I'm I'm okay with them not being happy with me because for the entire time that I was the assistant superintendent this has been my focus and because I was not the superintendent I didn't have the level of authority that I needed to get people to do what they needed to do right and now I do and so that's we are going to do right by kids and we will provide strong on my behalf you can communicate yeah absolutely it's the right it's the right thing to do yeah it's the right thing for kids absolutely because if kids can't leave third grade and they can't read school is forever hard for them right and then doors close because they stop trying

082because they don't want to work that hard and things that they should be able to do they're not able to do and I don't I don't want that for any child that's ridiculous when we have the tools and resources for them to and we've got I mean if you guys ever have time in your day and want to go with me and watch reading instructions at Betty Kiefer it is it's like magic okay um so you just so you can see what it looks like but it it's amazing yeah I think I'm around on that you're allowed in all of the campuses so okay um correct words per minute uh so six or kindergarten does sounds per minute and they our Target was 90 they hit 96. awesome so that's awesome I think that's a

083great Target um what we found in the other three grades with the words per minute is that the teachers weren't specifically teaching to reading fluently anymore because the iri has changed so we had to go back and make sure and work with the teachers on what does the instruction look like when you're working on fluency because they had to let that go so um the numbers are not where I want them to be all of our grade levels should be 95 percent what was our rule for this one this is three percent yeah let's buy it there so they so we set the target at 63 and first grade hit 68. so then second grade should hit 68. I think we should bump second grade up to 70 because they were at 68. okay this

084year I would agree with that okay and then second graders were at 63.7 so if we bump them up a little bit what do you want that to be okay uh three but what was this a that's what I asked wasn't this the three percent increase or we are just this was new I think this one okay but I think this target was new last year our Lea chosen this was the the first year that we did the yeah we correct one these benchmarks last year that we didn't know so if you did three percent and you rounded your 63.7 to 64 you could say 67 I mean this year's third graders in to get 66.7 so but we only raised second grade two percent because they were at six they'll they should be coming

085in at 68 so do you want to move it to 71. and then 67. and not only that I think the staff has a percentage in their head it's very easy I would think for them they can look they always know there's a three percent minimum expectation you know so then I would what do we want to do for first grade because we target him for 63 they came in at 68. yeah that's awesome and I do think we could bump at 271 percent as well absolutely when you consider that those are the kindergarteners yeah that are coming that came in at 96.6 right they're coming in with their letter sounds yeah okay but um one of the things that I do say to our staff that's not popular ever when they're writing their smart

086goals and they they'll literally put on paper that 75 percent of their kids are going to achieve a goal my response to them is which 25 aren't and when are you going to notify the parents that you expect that they won't and they always look at me and go what if you're writing a goal that says you expect only 75 percent of your kids to reach this then you're already setting the bar low so you may as well let the parents know right now that they use plans yeah your goal should be 100 right put it on paper Yeah a hundred percent if you get 98 we're going to celebrate that right but we don't start off with the low goal unexpected you know a quarter of your class is not going to meet your

087your yeah it's all tied up with that darn ape money because you have to hit 75 of your kids have to hit your target to get the money so they just set their goal at 75 percent holding themselves very high in Canada but it is highly offensive to people it's highly offensive that they push back when you told them that they're gonna do something so um okay mint College and Career Mentoring I had to reach out to the counselors I have Lakeland High Schools percentages I don't have uh Timberlake high schools yet but Lakeland High School had 49 of their Juniors and 12 53 percent of their seniors took at least one dual credit or AP course last year and I don't know what timberlakes are going to tell me that so I don't know

088if they're right around kind of where we set our Mark so I don't know if you want to do a three percent increase there I mean we've got 50 percent or more if those kids are taking yeah it's pretty good yeah that's a little different than yeah I like because yeah right the the other thing that we could do because this is really focusing on college-bound kids we're not really tracking our CTE kids so we could add a metric for next year that says the percentage of students at the high school level who are um yeah that would be great I like it yeah okay yeah then we're capturing everybody there are a percent of do you just want to be Juniors and seniors do you want to do Expo level do high school students

089because I don't know is it only Juniors and seniors that can go to K-Tech well K-Tech but at both schools we have like at Timberlake High School you have all the FFA courses those are all CTE um and then Corey cut it's got his and then you've got the FC SCS yeah so there's definitely things on campus kids can be taking so high school students who take at least so what do you want our performance targets to be you're looking at like 50 percent of our Juniors 50s Anniversary thank you um do you want to stick with kind of what our performance targets were last year because we basically hit them and then so what do you want that to look like thank you um I think those are pretty good numbers really like you

090said about or what they are you know right because not everybody's going to college right right right exactly no but I'm just I wonder how many [Applause] how many students I would be interested in you know on average every year how many what percentage of students take CTE courses is it 50 like the dual credit and AP or is it less I think it'll be less because like especially since we're counting all four years because there are only so many spots for the ones that are on campus for the freshmen and the sophomores so you're gonna have a small percentage of those classes when you get to Juniors and seniors then it were locked in as far as K-Tech goes to the number of seats we have right yeah so I would say that our

091CTE numbers are going to be 15 20 lower because you're a little commissioner yeah yeah I didn't want to go with a 50 right I mean if that's just that's unreasonable we just don't have the availability for those classes well and I think if it's the first year we're measured yeah I'm gonna say 15 and for the first year implementation here's a goal we're going to collectively try and hit and then let's see where we're at yeah okay so 15. and then for the other two do you want to just keep the performance targets that we had last year do you want to modify those at all I'm fine with those I mean those are 50 yeah well what I would say is that the results come in higher then we should bump it up

092to the higher to whatever that Year's accomplishment was because then you can kind of see if we're evident flowing here or if we're on so okay so if we're lower so for right now if we're lower I would say we stayed right and if we're because you're going to have to average the two schools right and I do so I I think Lakeland High School typically has a greater percentage of kids credit just because they have credits that they can think of Timberlake is limited um and Lakeland 11th graders were at 49 which is one higher than what our Target was but 12th graders were at 53 which is one percent lower right so I anticipate that these numbers are going to be a little bit lower than our performance targets okay so why why

093is um Timberlake offering less um part of it is um the question I mean they part of it is you have to have staff who want to offer those so a lot of Timberlake has schools dual credit courses are being offered through NNU which has made it easier for them to offer more because they don't require you to have a masters in your content area Lakeland High School has a whole bunch of teachers with master's degrees Timberlake High School doesn't so for a long time it took them a while to get their program started because they did they didn't have teachers who could teach for Nic then and then you opened up and they've so now they've got physics they've got um calculus they've got for um algebra the pre-trip pre-calculus trig they've got history

094but they also have a smaller staff so they have like half as many teachers up there as like when high school has so they just have to fix that and there's really no reason it should be that discrepancy I know that you probably have um different culturally Community culture but now and then see instead of not allowing kids to buy playground equipment Equity to me would be the offering the same thing even if it or at least the same amount of class at the same level it might be different because you have a cultural difference in between the two communities and it might not be as great as it used to be um but I don't that those are the things I think should be Equitable because there should be no reason that students who

095their parents happen to bought a house North don't have the same offering as those who bought their house um those I think are things that we should look at people because they can't be yes absolutely yeah yeah and part of that I think is we'd have to go back and look at those Master schedules because when you look at some of those dual credit classes at Timberlake high school that those are the classes where you have the small numbers of kids in so yeah computer just died do you need a power cord not all of them but some okay so but I don't I agree with you I don't think I don't think we're offering an AP like at Lakeland High School we have AP World History not a dual credit but an AP which

096you can get college credit for if you score high enough on the test I don't think we're I don't think we're are we offering AP World History anymore at times I don't know about world history in our government right government yes but I don't know but so world history um so what I what I can do which might be helpful for the board is I can bring to you kind of lakeland's AP and dual credit offerings and then timberlakes and we can kind of look at where the disparity is and start working with staff to see if we have interest in teaching some of those courses yeah I would ask the students too I'd hold the students and then and their parents and ask them what do you think about this whatever this is um

097this is what Lakeland offers right is this of interest to right the community yeah yeah or here are things we could offer to you are there others that you might want right because just because lakeland's offering it they might not be interested in that right there might be something very interesting exactly yeah so I saw I'll bring you the list of what's being offered currently and then I'll work with just input from kids about what they might want to add and then how to look at the master schedule and figure out how to do it okay so I will put the performance Targets in based on what I hear from Timberlake high school if the school year 2223 results are lower than our targets we're going to keep our targets if the results are higher

098than our targets we're going to go with the current results correct correct got it I don't know if I agree with that and I'll tell you why because when we set those targets High we're going to put pressure on the staff to try and meet that which means we're going to force kids who might not be interested because we're talking about going to college and we're talking about you know I don't know if that's I mean I I don't know I don't agree with that I don't agree with I think if we're at a 50 across the board if more kids want to do it more power to them but I don't want the staff to feel like they're pressured to meet this goal and then they're making sure all these kids are going in

099filling out fafsas trying to you know make sure that they're getting their college courses and all that when they might not want to do that you know so then do you think we should lower seniors no I don't think lower I think keep it the same just keep everything just leave it worked out yeah you know that they're at a 50 percent margin I mean that's why I'm looking at it I'm looking okay so we're saying you're looking at our class of seniors and and juniors and we're saying half of you are going to be this college-bound group you know 15 20 whatever are going to be our CTE kids and you know five percent are going to the military right right whatever and so on so and forth yeah joining the family business or

100so do we just want to round out those performance targets at 50 and 50. and just let's see where we're at with those with those numbers you know whatever you were saying they came in at 53 and 50 49 and 53. oh 49 well there you go okay well and sometimes they're talking about some of those kids are going to be in both of those categories right right you know you're those being completely separate there are kids that yeah doing credit AP and CTE classes so right yep yeah I mean even they do the auto mechanics or Machining or maybe that it's still a lot of them in the you know Community College AAA or what whatever right so I'm going to end up going on to engineering once they get in there yeah and

101I bet you we have a lot of kids at Timber Lake School would take at least one FFA type class or the shop class and are in Colleen Wells history class you know um well Katie did all all three she did AP government and a bunch of dual credit classes and and did FFA so she did all of them some kids who are okay at the bottom the highlighted part is just the narrative and I just copied over what we wrote last year I just have to update the graduation rate so it's highlighted in yellow until and I'll change the dates um I'm just waiting for the information okay and then the staff performance report I'm working on I haven't haven't gotten I have to go through this is this part is such it to

102use it's so dumb because it's not meaningful at all but I because I just have to go through and I literally have to touch every single person's iplp and look at what was their smart goal and what percent of their kids met the smart goal and then I have to identify which teachers had this used the same assessment for their smart goal oh yes yes such a pain so I'm working on this part but I I don't it's not meaningful I don't know why we're doing it other than busy work the legislators want to see what percent of our teachers are actually meeting their goals so and so I have a lot of pieces of paper in front of me with I ready diagnostic yeah I ready this the teacher created that I mean there's

103a performance of the student already tell you whether the teacher's being in the goal or not I mean why are we done all measuring things I don't know yeah especially when you look at the entire class yeah I think their intent was that our ISAT scores are terrible across the state every district is struggling and so this gives the teachers at least an opportunity to shine on something that they're actually using as meaningful I think that's the intent of this there's just no easy way to pull the information so I literally have to close myself in a room and go through all of this and figure it out it will be done you even have to do that yeah without being able to have something a little more automated and it has to they have

104to use the same assessment and there have to be five yeah them with the same assessment before to count so yeah I remember this was that new implementation yep um just uh I we're gonna be in the paper at some point this week because Jose snow was at the board meeting not last this last week but the Octo August board meeting and we had taught been talking about the math highsat test who Joseph yeah and so she had some questions um about the ISAT based on just the things that Lynn and I had shared with the board and so I shared with her my conversation with Ryan Cantrell and some of the concerns about the math I sat in particular and we talked about the math standards you want to know about common core and

105so it's always interesting when you spend two hours talking to somebody and they have little tiny like three-word Snippets of information it just it always makes me nervous about how is it all what is she really carrying it what and what is it right well she goes back and reads those notes what does she get to remember right but she was she was recording so she can go back and listen but just so you know I will be paper and talking about how I don't think the math I said is a good indication of what our kids can do in math well you were already in the paper for the members the district's numbers in Monday's paper oh it was my what your little face is right there next to being an apparatus oh for

106the um did you like my quote because they wanted they kept email it was about the are you going to run an emergency Levy is that the one yeah yeah and I said no we're not running an emergency loan and then she came back with well tell me why you're not running an emergency Lobby is it because you don't have enough kids and so my response back to her was um this year we don't have more kids this year than we did last year so we can't run an emergency Levy but even if we could I would not recommend to our board that we run an emergency Levy because our taxpayers just passed a supplemental and a plant facility Levy and it would be unfair for us to add to their tax burden so that's

107what I sent and that's what they think nice it's nice yes [Laughter] exactly I just I really wanted our community members members yes well it is the truth you know that's what makes it even better right you know yay yeah for the truth so anything else or the Sip that are interested in Lynn will bring the fall data to you probably maybe November because I don't know if I have to I already get it done by the time we have to turn stuff in for the October board meeting but we'll have the default data in the next two at least by November share with you and it'll be good for you to see I'd like to Circle back for just a minute for that struggle you're having with the elementary schools involved when you run

108a check to see whether the time on task and reading is the same at all elementary schools um no not yet but um we started the conversation today because one of the principals just talked about the new program when they went to the training they said you know you should be spending 120 minutes a day on reading instruction at the elementary level which especially K3 is 100 appropriate um and so she was concerned about what does that look like to get science and social studies in if we're also spending you know 60 to 90 minutes on math instruction and I was quickly doing math in my head and thinking so you still have like two and a half hours of instructional time so you should be able to fit in the social studies and the

109science in and you can actually teach your social studies while you're teaching here in your reading because you can use your social studies text right as the as the tool or in there yeah so um so we started to talk today about instructional unit so I am going to circle back around and I am going to ask them to provide for me how many minutes at each grade level they're spending is be interesting to see whether or not that it's contributing yeah I don't think it is because I do think we're spending a lot of time in in the area of reading I just it's some it's just really is it are you focused on the right things make sure that it's efficient time spent rather than just minutes also get um some information numbers

110or whatever uh on professional development for the administrators the teachers uh to the I.T staff the transfer you know all the Departments Transportation I'd like to see how much professional development you know how much education are we giving to our people you know our teams right well we've gotten a lot of people the teachers got a lot of PD a lot on the week the two weeks before school started to get them up and running but I'll I will I can tell you that I don't think there's any professional development happening for like facilities technology they usually go to the the um so the conference I can't think of it it's four letters I can see um transportation has several different professional development days but we're going to be limited this year on what we

111do for professional development because our professional development dollars didn't get budgeted properly so yeah I think we're down to like 13 000 left in that fund yeah that's fine but I can put the I can bring that to you so you can kind of see my department but the teachers are definitely getting the bulk of the routing time and then we can have a written a better understanding you might already have it of how we're meeting the two-year commitment so you know the statute's really not clear everybody always interprets it as a new two-year teacher but really the statute says that we would provide alternate yes well two years the professional development you know mentoring what have you so I would like to see how we're doing that for teachers into the district because I

112mean we have our own culture here I would assume um in our own expectations of what Lake Lynn is right and then also if we're doing it for being teachers I'm trying to see how early meeting the goal of that statue which the board is supposed to be doing right you know well we have I think we have a really strong Protege program for their first year with us we aren't probably not as intentional maybe as we need to be with the second year I mean they they have their person they're assigned to for mentoring but as far as professional development yeah and differentiating in that too because you know how are we meeting the mentoring Protege whatever for those who have number one a blended degree and those who have special ed and those

113right because there's a lot of difference you know the Gen somebody who was educated just gen Ed is the other world compared to somebody who has a blended degree right you know and then you add a special ed and whatever else they might come with so I would just like to understand that better so that I know that you know when I'm talking to people you know in the community whomever it might be staff whoever that you know I know we're meeting the statute dancers we're gonna need that thought about when I was when I was looking over this you know someone to hear things it kind of it's like oh yeah today does anybody have anything else on the set how are we doing on bus drivers numbers um I think we barely have

114enough we might have one or two relief drivers there were still we actually had I think we had six that so we were thinking we were gonna be in the best spot we've been for the last couple of years but out of the six I think only two were able to pass their CDL and the other four couldn't so we're continuing to recruit and higher we did increase the bus driver wages this year that's helping a little bit we're at least getting more people I mean it's I mean if it gets to the point to where we need to you know have a conversation and see what we can kind of that conversation I mean if we have to come up with some incentive to get people to take a job yeah because we can't

115I mean with bus driver gets sick or it gets it has to have surgery or right you know yep and we that comes up we had that happen last year and then our office staff is out there right driving yeah and that irritates parents because they're trying to call the transportation department because the bus hasn't gotten to the stop yet and there's nobody to answer the phone because they're all driving yeah and I have a radio over here and I'm answering phones and redoing the drivers so yeah it's not fun it's all hands on uh episode where she played the I think it was her right she had the hat that had all the different bills on it she kept turning it depending on what she wants that's what I feel like a lot of

116days yeah you definitely have been the principal said that this was the best start to the school year that we've had in a long time that's exciting super great super yep kids came in super smooth parents were happy I know great to keep it going yeah feel for the number of parents that got me zoned that actually came and or knows that opted out of the district or when I asked for a transfer to him um I don't Anna felt like it was probably 50-ish families that we lost as a result of the rezoning but I don't know if I don't know if that's accurate I don't know if people moved because they can't afford to live here yeah and really hard yeah yeah and you know Jake is down from 466 to 402 which

117is exactly what we were hoping for and Anna went up from 270 to 360. yeah that's a lot maybe 380. she's closing in on 400 which is what we were trying to get her to the goal yeah and Tiffany's down um 60 but we only we didn't move 60 kids from her building so I think that some of what we lost at Twin is just people moving so overall McDonald's yeah we we try we've we tried to work with individual families and we really looked at each child and what was best for the child that China definitely had some situations where you know we had kids who with severe anxiety and forcing them to move as a fourth grader wasn't what was best for them so we've made it we found a way to make

118that work so they could stay and I think parents appreciate that when you're willing to sit down and work with them one-on-one to try to find is going to be best for their child [Music] who were able to Zone Zone transfer back to Garwood because kindergarten because our kindergarten numbers are low across the district it's just crazy because last year they were so high right especially at Garwood yeah something was happening I don't know what it was but it's when times were good maybe they just were too busy doing things they're just went to sleep but yeah right yeah 2018. yeah so we just for whatever reason this is just a low birth year so it happens yep the other but the other wonder that I have is and I wonder if it will continue

119to be an issue for us is um we continually hear from families who want to be in Lakeland and can't afford to live in Lakeland and so that's I can't afford to live here they can't afford to live anywhere yeah but they need that they would have to drive or find some Transportation or something but with the new law that shouldn't prevent them from coming now right nope and so Rebecca actually spent all week this week calling families so if they had requested an open enrollment to Betty Kiefer third grade and Betty Kiefer doesn't have any room in third grade she's looking at that sheet that I shared with the board Monday and calling the families and saying we can't accommodate you at Betty Kiefer but we could accommodate you at John Brown or Twin

120Lakes are you interested in either of those schools are are they open to that yep for the most part most of them are but some people who are up north and we're hoping to get in Spirit Lake or Athol that's not feasible for them to drive all the way down here so that's where they have said no but yeah for the most part we were able to fill most of them so so we are abiding by the law how many units is that well to our uh Brian used to say a classroom is a unit roughly so 25 kids you're looking at nine classrooms that's fine that's fine it'll all work out because I you know in watching these last couple of years tell you the truth I think what's happened and what we're seeing

121is a normalization of the reality of the numbers that these are really people who live here yeah people who live here after the yeah not only that but just the you know the operation of the district itself I feel like the reality of where the district's been and where it was because if you go back and you look at the numbers because I once again I plotted the numbers I still have all these numbers of the the enrollment um what the actual enrollment numbers were versus the projection the projection was always we number one we never met it it was always hundreds of whole school off and you can go back and pull them um so I think basically what we're seeing is the messaging never really matched the numbers The Numbers Never affect them

122the messaging I never found that I had a friend who's a for it wasn't for retired friends about it or for the federal government The Numbers Never matched for him either so I think a lot of what we're experiencing is just um or reconciling of where the district's actually been you know like I don't really think it's that far off of where the where the reality's been when it comes to the actual numbers right is my estimation of what we're actually experiencing now funding of course the state you know when they say oh we're going to do it this way and this way not really we're going back over again yeah and they're causing us a little bit of strife but yeah we'll get it figured out and we're gonna that our staffing matches our

123enrollment yeah that's going to be the most critical thing that's a big challenge I think for the next but the good news I think for our patrons is If This truly is how many people are living in our district we're not we're I'm not feeling like we have to rush to a bond issue because we we definitely have room in our schools you know Jake brought up again today he's like you know I've got 400 kids if I get a couple more I'm I'm going to be overcrowded again and I said Jake at one point we had 550 kids in your building yeah and 550 kids at Betty Kiefer and we didn't have we didn't have class sizes of 30 so um we can make it work um so I did they just want to

124stay at 400 they like that 400. that's why it's important to look at what we do that today when you have those low class numbers and you have those over a period of time it's really easy to get used to that and it becomes an expectation and it's not necessarily a reality forever to do that well it's not affordable it's not efficient in any way yeah yeah I would just like to guess a little closer Staffing to what the state's actually finding for us so that we can operate within our budget and not be dipping into our fund balance yeah and try and put things you know like uh like looking at actually you know how many literal you know uh Librarians do we have like somebody with a degree for the job those kinds

125of things would be nice too you know but we're getting there little by little so we're just chipping away yeah yeah what is nice about this board is it I feel like it's kind of it's a team effort but we're bringing you all the information and it's all of our brains together looking at them coming up with what's the best way to move forward instead of one person making all those decisions right well any other discussion on the Sip we can end the meeting we're already 10 minutes over let's say we end it all right so we'll go ahead and adjourn the meeting 11.
