Um, Mr. Hopkins, Mr. Guthrie, >> Mr. Kursner. Okay. Um, Mrs. here. Dr. Sult >> here. >> Mrs. Eric >> here, Mrs. Cotay >> here. >> Miss Venezuela >> here. >> Okay. And I will make a motion to adopt the agenda. >> Second. >> All those in favor say I. >> I. Any opposed? >> Motion carries. 4 Z. To the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for it stands nationisible and justice for all the first excited about is governing board report of current events. Has anybody have anything to report? The only thing I was going to report was that last month we had requested a discussion for this month [Music] trips and stuff. We decided to put that off until next month to give Dr. Sero chance to consult with people

at the law conference lawyers. So that can I have anybody else on the board? >> Yes, sir. Mr. President, members of the board and everyone in the in attendance, our audience, um I just want to share with everyone the uh an update. I can ask uh Miss to go to our attachments if she can pull up the board's policy on visitors to schools as this falls under you know the first few lines especially as far as it says uh the superintendent shall establish school visit procedures such procedures shall permit full use of all legal means to ensure that students employees and district property or property is safeguarded. So that leads into uh the next point I have here. The American Association of School Administrators, code of ethics for education leaders make the education while being

students the fundamental value of all decision- making. So um you have in front of you on one of the attachments just a little procedures and history chronology of how we got to where we are now with our with our fence. Um, email communications were sent out informing the AUSD community of the protocol for before and after school procedures and for high school lunch procedures July 25th, 3031, and August 1st. The communication stated the following. Main entry red from 7:30 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. First bell rings at 8:10. Students arriving after 8:15 a.m. must be buzzed at the school office. After school dismissal, main red entry gates unlock at 3:10 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and 110 1:10 p.m. Wednesday. This is what was sent out to parents uh to keep them informed before we started

the school year. Dis auditorium gate primary building prek to third grade. Disgate is open at 7:30 a.m. for families to drop off. PreK and kinder families must have a visible prek or K parking pass to park in the parking lot when you walk the students to class. That's what um what I have right here. I'll just share with anyone whoever wants to see it. Uh first and third grade families stay in their cars uh in the morning and and during a drop off in their cars and proceed to the bus pay roundabout which is a drop off pickup area. Uh at the same time, uh those same families have a chance, the first to third grade families want to walk to the primary building, they must park by the rock wall front of the school

office and enter at 3:10 p.m. >> 110 p.m. Wednesday. >> So, uh this is for our first and third grade students for the Dyus auditori parking lot. um high school uh uh lunch procedures also to make sure everyone was informed. The red softball gate is open from 11:55 by facility staff until 12:30 p.m. for students came in for lunch. The red softball gate is monitored by the security camera system for added safety and accountability. After 12:30 p.m., students returning must use the red entry gate by the school office and be buzzed in. uh an August 8th email after our August 8th school safety team meeting to discuss the new gate protocol was sent to our AUSD families providing an update for the first week of school parent drop off and pickup procedures. We will be

meeting again tomorrow. Uh the school safety team um and the people that are meeting to to on a weekly basis to discuss the new gate protocol are miss our facilities team managers Mr. Yon Mr. Cotton, Chief Tivot, our SRO, Deputy Richardson, and myself. Uh, an email will be sent with updates to make our new gate protocol more efficient. Uh, critical and important reminder that we've talked about it in our school safety team meetings is um, this is a significant change. We recognize that to a parent drop off and pickup routine that was in place for many years. I want to stress that this is our second week. uh the procedures that were in place before were in place for 10, 20, 30 years. And so this is our second week. It will take time to

have the best possible protocol established from a pro from a protocol where we had um where long story short, families could come on campus at any given moment from any given entrance and without notifying the school office. So we have to have best practices in place that are used in other school districts throughout Puma County and southern Arizona. This change is being done with the best interest of the students in mind and to ensure their maximum safety at all times. I want to highlight as school and district officials, it is critical, imperative and necessary that we know who is on campus at all times. That is a best practice that we have to uh that we've worked on improving this year. Uh those bulleted points are just more of the history of how we came

to where we are. Um I won't go over that. Just talks about when we first started to meet the parent copies, student council, parent classroom meetings, the board superintendent reports, and uh the consent agenda item for for the expenditure for defense. What I do want to share with with everyone is is just thought I'd share just some of the comments uh that I've received from the different stakeholder testimonials to the school safety with a criminal offense. Mr. Hector and Mrs. Maria Campa grandparents on Thursday July 31st upon entrance through the school office before school office gate before open house told me quote translation. The fence looks very nice. We never had this when our children came to school here. This is a job well done. Congratulations and thank you for the fence. Mrs. Julianne Cruzer,

a booster club president and a text message to me on Tuesday, August 5th stated, "I love the new school fencing. It looks awesome." Mr. Roger Pat Lunan, AUSD staff member and parent in a conversation with Miss Katy with Rial Cuffs and myself on Friday, August 1st in front of the district office stated, "Back home in the Philippines, our schools had fences, gates, or even walls around the campus for our security. I feel better knowing that my son is safe here in school." And uh what caught my attention the most was two students in the fourth and seventh grades. I believe they're brothers talking with me after talking with me um after the first day of school waiting for it to ride while sitting on the rock wall next to the district office gate. They both

told me I like the fence because it makes me feel safe. So uh we realize this is a this is a change but we are on a daily basis talking about it. the different people on the school safety team. Like I said, we're going to meet again tomorrow just to make sure, you know, how can we make this more efficient? We realize it's going to take time, but um it really is good to see how in the district office we have, uh Miss Valenuela, Mr. Simon, and Miss Vasquez, and Miss Gutierrez all have access to the iPads. So, we see who comes into both of the the gates between the school district office and also um in the school office. Miss Maria, Miss Fues and Chief Tibbit also have the iPads with access. So we

have six sets of eyes but also uh having access to their their secure to their security system to their phones and so uh you know we're getting there. I think we would just really ask what I would ask just you know just for for the patients it takes time. um our facilities uh at at dismissal we know is is probably the most challenging point right now but at dismissal we have one of our facilities team members at the softball gate at least one or two of u Mr. Mr. Angel and Miss Esther. I'm right here at the district office gate every day after school and in the morning. Um, our kids actually really, you know, they get off the car and they come and they open the gate. They open for their parents and so,

you know, they really, you know, they're really getting into it. Uh, but we have someone at each of the gates. Uh, we also have a good team at the at the Dyus gate. I believe Chief Tivven, Miss Williams, Miss Con, Mr. Yon, and one of our par professionals, right? I believe helps helps the students go outside. So, um it takes time, you know, um we've made sure that we have there's 22 parking spots between the school and district office, and then there's about 12 spots, but we have 10 yellow parking spots for district staff and food services staff to park right here. We've pretty much cleared up the 12 parent parking spaces that are from the end of the 10 yellow parking spaces to the end of the rock wall. Today we had about as

I was here at this game had about eight or nine open. Uh and I want to stress that for our community after school. We make sure to have these these parent parking spots open here. There were a number of those spots. We still had a few parents parking across the street right next to the old parking sign. And so what I want to do is ask Deputy Richardson to help me talk to those parents about, hey, it's a lot safer. Yes, we know you have to maybe wait a little more and park on one of the available spots, get off the car, come to the gate, but that's a lot safer than being across the street and motioning to your kids to cross the street when especially your truck is parked right next to the

no parking sign. And so that's one of the frustrations that we've had is just uh really making sure to stress with our parents just to just please be patient. I mean, you know, it's 10, 20, 30 years of doing things a certain way and now we're having systems in place. I'm sure Miss Rodriguez in her district where she's at, they have parent drop off and parent pickup procedures, you know, and so we're just we're doing the same thing. In my 25 years at all the different schools I've been at, there's always a parent drop off and parent pickup procedure. Whether it was when I was working at Saffford Middle School or Metal Park Elementary School or Harry Johnson Primary School or Cardio Intermediate Magnet School or Tulsa Elementary School as an assistant principal or Hoka

Middle School as an assistant principal or Tully Elementary as a principal or even in Ogal Unified School District as a principal at Lake Carpenter Middle School. Every school had um had parent drop off and pickup procedures and many of the schools had gates or fences around campus. And so it takes time but it it's we're really trying to implement best practices. And so uh the the system that I shared here with you as far as for the dy pickup area for pre-k to third grade miss and the elementary team work together to try and have the best possible procedures. So uh that's what I wanted to share just to keep everyone updated. Um like I said we're going to meet on a regular basis as a school safety team. we meet here in the boardroom

and right after that as we're doing that missa is typing up the feedback that we're all giving each other so we're all on the same page Mr. Cotton Mr. Chief Tivot, Deputy Richardson, and myself. So, we want to just make sure to update our parents as much as possible before the year started and on a weekly basis. So, that's where we are. >> Okay. >> One quick question is actually, did you turn his volume all the way down? >> I just turned his volume down, but he's still on the phone. >> He might want to have >> Okay. I just didn't want to be turned all the way down if we had for for you to be able to vote or have a discussion. >> Yeah. >> But um if you get a lot of

background noise on your end, if you could mute it on your head, that would be helpful. >> Oh. >> Um can I actually say something? >> Sure. >> Um I love the game. I love it. I have no issues with it. My issue as a parent is pickup. Not I mean I park over here so my kid walks to my vehicle so I have no issue like getting out of my vehicle. Uh, one day last week I got caught on the highway by a group by cars trying to turn left into the parking. So, I couldn't even come down Wel Road because people were waiting. And then on what was it? Monday and yesterday, people were literally lined up at the gate on the on the road blocking the road waiting to get into the

gate. >> Okay. >> And it unfortunately it's going to cause an accident. >> Sure. or cars. >> Well, cars. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Right. Well, we can talk about it tomorrow and and and we can just come up with the best uh you know, possible, you know, how to address that. Um we'll get it figured out. I I I've been looking from when I've been at the gate here at the district office. Uh I had looked going south on a well road. I haven't seen that long line from the gate coming back north to Wellro. So, that's just when I've looked. I mean, usually it's around, you know, uh, 3:10 that the gate opens up, 3:15 to 3:20, 3:20 to 3:25. I don't see a line, so I don't >> Oh, no. It's It's before

It's before the gate even opens is when the line happens, honestly. But yeah, so that's only my >> sure >> negative feedback on it, but it's it is going to be it's an issue. >> Well, we'll have to keep working together. We'll keep working together to figure that out. And uh we have that Yes. >> To visit a buddy and pick up his daughter, the school that she goes to online. I mean, it took us a long time to get they checked your car when you came to the gate. >> Oh, yeah. >> And then you went all the way up and then they confirmed that you were the parents before they let you have the kid. Right. >> But the school was laid out in a kind of legitimate time. It wasn't never nobody

ever thought that we were going to have this offense and this system or whatever. You know, I think Dr. and the staff just kind of limited by the way by the way the school was built, right? I mean I maybe there are some changes you can make, but I I don't think so. I think it's going to just the way it's going to be. Am I am I wrong? >> Well, I I think Mr. Hopkins, Mr. Mr. Dr. I think the biggest challenge from from what I can hear is is is the pickup at Dyus in the parking lot prek to third grade. And uh like I said, we'll we'll assess it and see what else we can do. Um we have the the the system in place for prek to kinder for the parents

to park and get off first because those are the little kids, the youngest kids. And that that's kind of been in place at every school I've been at where the prek and kinder parents and students can can park and then get their kids and so but um we'll we'll we'll keep working to figure it out. Um it it you know miss you want to add anything just on on your initial observations. So pick up or drop. I thought that it would be crazy but hearing from Chief Tibbit that they have it outgoing like Chief is there by the gate and I know Miss Williams is by the first Ramada there to to check the parents and we just need to remind them that it has to be on top of their dashboard that sign at

all times and it has the name of their child so Miss Williams can check. So, I think we're we're getting there. We're not fully there. You know, we still have some ironing to do and reminders for parents and yeah, but that that is I've been focusing on that the last two weeks. Our kids are getting better with the 3:00 and 3:10 release and getting there on time with the bus 3:15 for the most part that they leave. I know we have a few hiccups, but having this radio where everyone is, you know, is is on is really helpful. But maybe the next time I want to see what's going on in this side because I've been so focused on that side, making sure that kids are shepherd, you know, >> to to that area because

there's just a lot in that area. A lot. >> Yeah. To follow up on what Lonnie said, I told people if this school was being built today, there's no way they would put it here on the corner of this intersection used by Rocky Point shortcuts or police department and all that. If anything, it would be better at Walker Park. There's no traffic, >> right? Mr. Hopkins and also Miss Frig, Mr. Ley, of course, we wanted to go smooth. You know, like I shared with Angelina, Rome wasn't built in a day. You're talking 10, 20, 30 years. Um, I really want to stress different people coming on campus at any given moment from any given direction and not checking in, which is which which is a very unstructured approach. It's not a best practices approach. I

have not seen it in the 28 years that I've been involved as a teacher and administrator at any school where people just come in unannounced, don't check in, get their kid, walk up to the door, knock on the door, take the kid to go, and the office has no idea who's on campus. That is a complete inappropriate, very unsafe practice. What I was sharing with all the team is, hey, if there's any questions or just any frustration, please direct the people to talk to me. I'll gladly meet with them in my office. I have an open door policy. Um, what I've seen just being here at the district office gate is we we've been able and and it's been we've sent emails to staff members. I've even called staff members in my office. Hey, reminding

staff members. You don't you're not at the district office or food services. These first 10 yellow spots are for for district office and food services staff. We've been able to move out around seven, eight or nine staff members that were parking right here taking up those extra parent parking spaces. You know, just speaking from what I've seen here on this side by the district office at dismissal. I can't stress that enough. There was literally I counted nine or 10 parking spaces that were free from the end of the first 10 yellow spots that were filled up by district office and food services staff. There was nine or 10 spots and I still counted a few parents parking across the street. I can't stress that enough and I was going to share that with our committee

meeting tomorrow, but I'll say it now. The same parent was parked underneath next to the same non-p parking spot. And I mean, you can't make this up. There's 10 spots. Okay, you have to park, get off your truck, and walk up here and get your two kids. Everyone has to give a little extra for the safety of the student. That is a situation where it's convenient for adults not want to get off the car and have their kids walk across the street, which is very dangerous. So, I'm going to ask Deputy Richardson tomorrow if he can come and talk to some of the parents here that are literally the same truck. I'm not going to say what color the truck was or who was in there. Same driver, the same male driver in the same

truck. No, not you, Mr. by by the same non no parking sign. You can't make it up. Motion to the kids. Come across the street. There's eight or nine or 10 spots. So, so I get it if we have some of the parents who want to get down, but they can't at the Dyus parking lot. And there's 22 spots here in between each gate that are full. There's nine or 10 spots over here that are open today. So, if any of our parents, first to third grade, want to park here and get down and walk to the primary building, there's parking spaces here. So, it's just a matter of it goes to that that that thing we talk about doing what is best for students or what is convenient for the adult. A lot of

the times doing what's convenient for the adult is not the is is is a hard thing to do, but doing what's best for students that's driving our decision making. So, I can't stress enough uh Miss Mercy, you and your team at the Dy Kids, if any of our first and third grade parents are saying there's no parking spaces, there's nine or 10 here. It just means a little bit longer walk safer. >> And so, uh we'll keep working at it. We'll keep doing our best, but I wanted to make sure you share those parent testimonials, too, and the works from the students. But, uh Mr. President, members of the board, that's that's sums up my entire report. One other thing I want to add is that These treating myself would recall very well how many

students used to take off le school go to Pali Park go wherever right we we had our store quarterback arrested by so in the parking lot one day during school because he left to go do some business right and so not only does it keep bad guys in I mean bad guys out but also keeps the kids >> in the campus. And so certainly >> I just have to say like I'm very very happy that we're putting all of these safety classrooms in place. My first year working here I was um just kind of dumbfounded to see the lack of security that was here coming from districts that had these security precautions in place. It was shocking to see the lack of security that was here. Um, so like you said, it's an inconvenience to

the parents and the adults, but as a district, we do need to have these safety precautions in place. We need to get up to par with the rest of the other districts. Regardless of us being in a rural community or the big city, we have to put these security measures in place. >> And Mr. out cuz Miss Rodriguez that picture that you have as your attachment um the high school wall fence you know where that's from >> the Philippines >> that's from the Philippines >> I mean you could take that picture anywhere else >> in this country with those safety measures. So I wanted to share >> have three other school, >> right? >> I just wanted to share with you if that can we should we should we should have procedures like that as

well. We should have the minimum >> absolutely >> offense or some kind of safety measures. That's not in Phoenix. That's not in Tucson. That's in the Philippines. So we should be able to do the same thing and we are. It's just it takes time. Change is always hard for everybody, but we'll get there. Anything further on that? >> Okay, next up we have public comments, but it appears that we have no public comments. So, I will make a motion to to approve the consent agenda. >> Second. >> All those in favor say I. >> I. Any oppos? >> I. >> Motion carries 5 to zero. >> Okay. First item of personnel is approval of additional CSF funds for the 256 school year. >> Mr. Mr. President, members of the board, um the administration and our

consultant agreed instead of revising the certified salary statement for the 2526 school year, it is recommended that an additional 1,000 be added to the classroom size fund amount allotted to each certified classroom teacher. Recommend the approval of the increase of $1,000 classroom siphon amount for all certified classroom teachers. Sir, >> I have a motion on that. >> I will make a motion. >> I will second it. If there is no discussion or question, I'll call for the vote. >> All those in favor say I. >> I. >> Any opposed? >> Motion carries 5 to zero. >> Next item is the certified contract adjustment for the 2526 school year for Elizabeth Blanchard. >> Mr. President, members of the board, Elizabeth Blanchard is now certified and eligible for a contract adjustment for the 2526 school year. An

adjustment to Elizabeth Blanchard's contract for the 2526 school year is recommended. Sir. >> Okay. I will make that motion. >> I will second. >> There's no question or discussion. We'll call for the vote. >> All those in favor say I. >> I. >> Any opposed? Motion carries five to zero. >> Next item up. Certified employment annual substitute teacher renewal. >> Mr. President, members of the board, the administration brings the substitute teacher employment renewals to the board annually. The following individuals have expressed an interest in substitute teaching for the office school during the 2526 school year. You have the names of the teachers right there. Um recommend the approval of the renewed employment of above individuals that substitute teachers sir. >> Okay. Ask for a motion on that. >> I'll make a motion. >> I will

second it. And then if there are no questions or discussion I'll call for the vote. >> All those in favor say I. >> I. >> Any opposed? Motion carries five to zero. >> Next item, classified employment approval of addition contract in hours for Carl W. >> Mr. President, members of the board, the administration in the grounds and custodial managers are recommending Carl Wat professional at office schools be approved for an increase in hours each week. He's doing about 30 as a parap right now to 10 and grounds or custodial staff for a total of 40 hours per week. Recommend the approval of the increased hours per week from Mr. Carl Wagner. >> Okay, I have a motion on that. I will make the motion. >> I will second it. There no questions or discussion. I'll

call for the vote. >> All those in favor say I. >> I. >> Any opposed? Motion carries five to zero. >> And the next item up, extra pay position employment. >> Mr. President, members of the board, the following individuals have expressed an interest in the corresponding extra paid positions. Brady Mangus Bjo, district testing coordinator. Terry Makarayo, yearbook adviser. Dear Roa National Honor Society, Daryl Yak, volunteer football coach. Donell Dor, volunteer volleyball coach. I recommend the employment of the above individuals for the corresponding extra pay or volunteer position. Sir, >> okay, I will motion on that. >> I will second and there's no question or discussion. >> All those in favor say I. >> I. Any opposed? Motion carries 5 to zero. Okay, business. First thing we have is implementation of long-term substitute. >> Mr. President,

members of the board, the administration is requesting long-term substitute pay be included for substitutes after 8 days of continuous service in a single classroom. Substitutes long-term substitutes will be listed at $150 per day. Recommending the approval of the long-term substitute paid $150 per day be instituted for the 2526 school year. >> Okay, I will make the motion. >> I will second. a question on it which is what is the regular >> regular to pay right now is 125. >> Okay. >> And this is pretty consistent with with how other districts do it. I know uh in county in the foothills they were they had uh the difference between the regular pay and the long-term sub pay was about $25 increase to as recently as just a few years ago. >> Okay. I have one question

about this. What what um I don't know the word I'm trying to say. I can't think of it. Um what what how many like you say the long term. What is a long term? How many days is a long term? >> Well, yeah, we're we want to be a little bit ahead of other districts or we say after 10 days. We're we're saying after eight days. >> Okay. >> Yeah. Try because in this case, we had our long-term subs here at the very first day when everyone else came back. So they were working really hard. They were getting the classes ready. They were here for open house and so >> during planning. So they were really working hard to have the start of the year for our fifth and sixth grades be off to to

a real start. >> Is this going to be backdated or is this going forward starting tomorrow or today? >> Um well I believe Miss Vans you wanted to share something about that. It'll be going forward for today. If we wanted to change the motion for it to be backdated, that would be up to you. But because we've already paid out that that day from here to there, um uh it's real specific that we can't change anybody's pay without for. Um, so that can be made, but we wanted to put for some strange reason it was in the working conditions in our we confirmed unit for the longest time and then it I don't know if it got taken off I had it. So I don't remember if it got taken out purposely or accidentally um

between the agreement between the teachers and the um the administration. Um, but we used to have this in here and it was 10 days. So that's totally up to you if you want to do backing for those two individual teachers. But as far as the policy to put back the policy is as a long-term stuff, um, it would be within that eight days. >> I think it was my motion to do it. So I'll amend my motion to make it back that day to cover the people who have already done 8,000. >> So do you want to do back pay for all of those people moving forward? So like if tomorrow I'm not going to as the third grade teacher I won't say anybody's name out loud. I don't want to chase him. Um gets

uh sick, falls down, you know, and then has to be uh wherever. So then they start off at that 125. I don't remember what the policy was before, but once they hit that 8th day, does it go backtrack or did they go from the eighth date on forward? Oh, I see what you're saying. You know what I mean? I see what you're saying. That is a good question. So >> I wasn't I wasn't reading that in my motion. I was meaning for anybody who already did eight days, but it's going to come up before today. It is going to come up. Well, um, that seems like that would be create logistical headaches >> for you to do that. So, I'll make my motion that we back to to anybody who has done eight consecutive days

already this year gets the extra pay for that, but that it's at the eighth day when it kicks. Yeah. >> And it kicks into the one. >> So, it would they get regular pay until they hit that. >> But with that being said, it would have to be consecutively. Yeah. >> And they can't like they can't like not sub for like a month and then come back. >> Yeah. >> But it's the extra pay starts on that. >> So my question is and maybe it's not even an issue. >> Do you ever have subs that are in different classrooms for eight consecutive days? This says in a single classroom. So, it seems to me like if I came in to the third grade today and the second grade tomorrow and the fourth grade the next

day and back to the third grade, it really wouldn't be fair that after eight days I didn't get the extra money just because it wasn't in the single classroom. That's what I'm saying. >> Oh, I see what you're saying. >> Right. Um, Mr. Hopkins, Mr. Dy, we have to check really to see how often that is happening. But, but I'm just I'm use your words from the past, apples to apples. We're just focusing on the eight days >> in a single class >> of the teachers in the same classroom. You can always revisit that later on, but I think for right now, this is just referring to the eight days that two of our teachers have been in the same classroom. >> Yeah. >> But I yeah, interested in having a future discussion about that,

too. You can only see one point too. But if I'm called eight days in a row for different classes, it's the same inconvenient being called in the same class eight times. That for October. >> Any other questions or discussion on this item? The only other discussion I would have is probably how about if I don't like somebody and so I only let him work seven days and then have them come back again with another seven days. Not saying it would happen with this superintendent, but I'm just saying down the line that you Yeah, >> you should not have had those situations like that. But that's one of the benefits of being a sub, right? pull up a staff has bounce around like that. >> You're going to say I want to stop for two days

Because at the day of day the teachers are supposed to have like, you know, if I'm gone in an emergency, they're supposed to have >> ready for something to do. But if we're out those eight continuous days, we're going to have to have lots of plans and try to figure stuff. >> So the reason is pay more for one classroom is because when you're in that classroom for consecutive days, you're going to have to come up with lesson plans. You might have to do extra grading. There's extra work that comes with being in that single classroom. If you don't want to be

in that ceiling classroom, you go to this classroom and that classroom. You don't have to do that extra stuff. So that's a benefit of being because you don't have to do that extra stuff. So we shouldn't have to pay extra. You're bouncing around because there's no extra work. [Music] >> Okay. Okay.
