001Mr Hopkins here uh Mr K is absent uh Mrs Rodriguez here Mr Guth Miss Olson here Dr suo here Mrs Aron con here and I'm here no so we've already appointed Acer have a motion to all those in United States of America to the okay it is public comments we have no public com before even we go into the first of the informational items which is the certified employment for 2425 school year teacher Mr President members of the board M who was a teacher at a schools from 2015 to 2021 has been interviewed for a position as a reading intervention teacher no board action is necessary at this time this is a study session item only have any discussion or questions on that on to the next item certified employment of substitute teacher ad do
002Mr President members of the board ad Dominion has been interviewed for a position as a substitute teacher no board action is necessary at this time this is a study session item only okay anybody have any discussion questions on that it okay and we will go on to item C which is the classifi hour increase teach Mr President members of the board PR the board approve 2425 classified hourly salary schedule classified employees can increase hourly wages by completing college and professional development hours on April 19th Candace Mor gave notice to the HR analyst she intended to complete the final two college classes to complete her bachelor's degree Candace has completed these hours and is eligible to for pay increase uh the amount right there listed starting 9:16 202 before no board action is necessary at this
003time this is a study session I well that huge rise 10 cents an hour we have any other discussion on that one or questions not we'll go on item certified classified employment for fall intercession Mr President of the board eight teachers and four PA of professionals from K12 will work with students who need additional support and Nath during the break from October 7th to the 10th for 5 hours per day teachers and AIDS will have expressed an interest in teaching working for intercession you have the teachers listed there and the par professionals no board action is necessary at this time this is a study session item only that's question typically what is our student turnout for these fall sessions summer sessions spring sessions Mr Mr Mr I can have Miss go and give some background
004information on that I'm just going to go by the last intercession in the summer but anywhere from 6070 to 8090 but I'll let her talk more about this about about like that it starts usually about 70 know 70 kids and at some point it down though but the good thing about it's just four days and it's just for four hours so it's not very long in the past we had a whole month during the summer that was not effective that's why we got it shorter and about yeah 60 to 70 kids participate that's pretty good turn out can we do any testing after those intercessions to measure the impact it's had um what since last year I believe we are more focused on the benchmark assessments okay so it's per standard and then and then
005when they come back or at the end of the I can't remember fully Mr Mr Case is the one that's leading the intercessions and if I remember right at the end they retake the test like that portion there five questions first standard okay thank you any other questions on that are the is it mandated for some kid to come to no we highly we want that to come but it's not strongly encouraged right calls to parents teachers ad anything F and the next item e is volunteer position employment for football coach Nicholas a Mr President members of the board Nicholas aary is interested in volunteer coaching for the boys football team his volunteer employment has been approved by the co-head coach and athletic director no board actions is necessary at this time this is a
006study session IEM moment I'm ass you still need to get a background Che I believe so I believe I believe he's I believe he should I think he's been approved of he good okay I thought I knew I wasn't capacity figure he had to get some background check for he's also working for theadi the radio station during the games yes yeah yeah yeah yeah I also figured his job is reg job in John probably require background check to okay item F business approval of the prek solicitation letter Mr President members of the board if you guys can go into a board docs I'll just as I'm reading this you can kind of look that over uh just and give us your feedback in an effort to increase funds for the AL prek program a solicitation
007letter has been drafted by the prek director who happens to be here today in attendance and approved by the district's attorney the district's attorney has suggested the letter be approved by the governing board before public issued since it is a solicitation of public funds no board action do necessary at this time this is a study session item only um we have it there on on the Whiteboard any information any feedback please let us know uh what do you guys think the heading Stu shows Dr No that's I just that right now off before the wede okay because the the hard copy I have here says Mercy don't but that one is different the one thing I'm curious about is I think it's important I mean the main reason that Tyler is suggesting such a big
008jump is because it has not gone up at all in eight years and to me that's that's important information for the public to know because they know that minimum wage in our state has gone up and they know that expenses have gone up but if they're not realizing that oh this Tosh hasn't changed in eight years they might think that's an incredibly big jump whereas just doing the math in my head the other night I realized if we had just increased at $25 a year for those eight years we would be at the 475 level and it wouldn't have been a shock to the individual wallets so I I don't to me that that would be valuable you put in there part of you know part of this is hey this hasn't got up in
009a while an expensive path and that's why it might that's why they're looking at this but I'll take other feedback on that as well who this being who's this going to well we just want we want to make a list between Miss Mrs C actually took the lead and just gave us a a number of of uh in fact you're okay with it can ask her just to give us a quick little back yes I have come up with the list of different scholarship organizations that we have in town and some business owners um yeah we we need we need something official to be able to get things going the F yes this eligible for tax reate money on federal taxes yes on state taxes no like so you donate to football you can't donate
010to preschool correct because it's not it's not extracurricular it's it's technically Child Care is preschool so the individual if I had a kid and they were going to pres school and I was paying tuition then I use that that what I paid as tax credit money but the school the individual school or donating if I'm donating for the prek program I can't individually give tax credit if I'm paying the tuition for my kid then I can use it as tax credit but we can't um if if I gave to to the actual school or whatever then it's just a donation that I can get off the end it can't be used as big syst anybody else have any suggestions on the letter or you know feel free if you if you need my idea of
011including the lack of increase for years you Mr can I say something just a reminder and of course you guys will make the final decision but just so everyone knows and Mrs C correct me if if I'm wrong I believe we have 15 students right now yes sir and we'll go up to 16 in November not all students will be paying this increase in tuition I believe it will be seven the other nine right um the other nine have scholarships or the scholarships are worked out six are under scholarships six are under scholarships and then two two for special education funding I think um when we had the meeting back in August we only had four tuition based students so after everything was put on the paper and the announcement um we still continue to
012get involvement for tuition base so some of the families are aware from then on we have three additional families so now we have seven tuition B from the meeting in August to now three have joined and tuition and there's one more coming in November and they are aware of it when the child Burns three then that's the eth student memory sech from last month you actually let folks know that the tuition might be increasing already so the fact that we're still getting students so it's seven of the total 16 yes that would be basically this incre not all six okay and that's who the funds we're asking we're going to be asking for go to help those to be able to pay that increase yes sir I put in here seven tuition based maybe should
013I do eight since we're going to get another one I would yeah it does matter and the new is paying the 275 not the new nothing's beened so still the 275 they P yeah it's next month that we have Ted it until the next month so it's 275 time8 kids times how many months 10 months 10 months I think you know if I I'm trying to see where you're going here Mr President Mr Jey I think the deficits at 37,000 with adding those three tuition have joined since August to now just an estimate if it stays at 275 with just those three not counting the fourth one it's maybe around 31,000 to $30,000 deficit if it stays at and just those two those those families keep paying the same tuition if we get additional it's
014going to go below 30,000 stay at 275 now we can have for you uh for October um we can you know that that's just an estimate if it stays where it's at we don't get no more students which you we have to do a conservative estimate 16 students four more paying 275 a month more or less 30,000 would VI the deficit more or less stays where it's at and we get no mo so only problem I see with this is this going to be a perpetuating problem you know what I'm trying to say it's not going to be like a onetime shot make we're going to make this $35,000 goal this you know and then next year we're going to turn around and say we need another $35,000 I'm just saying that that it's pretty
015difficult all right that's where I I think the situation would have been helped a lot had there been that maybe $25 a year increase over all the years I said since 2018 when it was last gr the price of everything is gone up but not the price of this program and it's a valuable program we want students in it so yeah if we if we do vote to go to 475 it's not like that's the last increase we would vote at but hopefully by then we can come up with a predictable system of expect giving out the expectation that hey every year it's going to go up a small amount you and I'm completely aware of how much the jump of $200 a month could have a negative impact on students and their families that's
016where I'm thinking if we do this increase we also do it and make clear that we have the understanding that it will keep increasing but we want to have it increased in smaller steps so that it's not a barrier any other feedback you guys can on the letter just on the letter or on the whole situation just mostly on the letter yes what you can always maybe more uh elaborate more on what you're thinking about on the vote in October what you guys decide to do yeah we'll have that full discussion that can take that can go over anything and everything with the program the letter look good yeah okay there's nothing else on that we'll go on to item G the 2425 proposition 301 plan for performance Mr President members of the board a
017committee made up of teachers representing a variety of grade labels 3K 12 and subjects taught review and revised the attached prop F1 plan classroom s from plan 100% of teachers voted to approve the attach plan on Wednesday August 28th 2024 no board action is necessary at this time this is a study session item only you can look on has it up on the white board in front of you I'm just going to go through my notes Here uh very focused um teachers must be certified with the standard of provisional Arizona Department of Education certificate um 301 money will be prated to Wi teacher certificate is received CE if they are not certified at the start um documentation School provided forms phone calls emails direct messaging emails printed for positive parent contacts prek through sixth grade
01880% of the parents The Home Room class have to be contacted with proof of of the contact attempts grade 7th through 12th grade specials teachers uh PE art um music um 80% of of of uh of of the designated class has to be contacted uh smart go specific measurable achievable rigor and relevant time Bound for the teachers also for the As far as the uh student rate of improvement as measured by the smart goal uh that's very critical uh at on the second page at the top the first paragraph provide positive feedback something in there really is is directly related to our mission uh generating relationship with parents is our mission g g g if you remember game that's the whole focus of making sure the content different parents to gain as many parents as
019possible each time um smart goal is very rigorous per based on the performance quity performance assessments the benchmarks um Project based learning the rigorous the rigor maybe it's not the performance quity performance assessments what are the teachers coming up with what kind of r uh assessments are they using and just to uh a reminder Miss has to approve all of the goals so um if there's anything else she wanted to add um anything else you could I think he said it all I know the smart is the smart go thing new this year not necessarily but they did at the start well before the start of the school year like they started they rote their big go you just have to revisit it and and see if it's still the same yes they so the
020teacher sets the goal and then if the kids meet the gold the teach for their fund question Sor how much how much are we talking per per teacher more or less how much the money yes I don't know that that uh Mr Hopkins Mr Dey um the the performance for this specific part the performance pays I believe 5614 the total classroom site fund was 14,35 and if you remember what Tyler mentioned earlier and a few months ago 8420 8421 that was collapsed into the base salary for every teacher this 5614 by Statute has to be through some kind of performance so and this will be they'll be F this in May so for each teacher is $ 5,614 for this specific performance plan for each teacher the certified mut reement and one who gets certified
021partway through is pro somebody get certified way through the year bonus pay for the amount of the year that they were ceri yeah the maximum pay up6 and last year was the first year we started doing that 2324 whereas in years past it was awarded the year after the goal was met uh few of our teacher leaders specifically our our CT director Mr Ji met with Mr Mo myself and this I'm going on Dr sholz and made the adjustment to where the teachers get their performance P for the year's goal before that year is over before they for the summer May which makes sense that's how District do to me it's you want you want the reward to come soon after the action you don't want to earn it and then wait a year get
022it me want to make sure that the goals and everything that we set are attainable enough so our teachers can get this money because they need this money to survive right and so want to make sure that they they every teacher goes over the go direct they're directly both they they preliminary wrote it already except for the primary they made their last Wednesday because they just got their div data and then they're going to revisit it before finally submitting a effort just to make sure that okay is this is this attainable yes you know that's that's the C you want everyone to get the maximum okay okay we're on to the next item item each donations to the office Mr President members of the board and response to the request from Miss sssen donations on
023a school's website I believe I'm gonna turn this over to miss valuel who has a really really nice presentation for you of how this applies to us here in our Unified School District so I work with our our P sale contact which is clover that's the machine that lets us yeah take cards cards Apple pay all that kind of good stuff um and they uh they work with our website people to add um a donation button at the top um I didn't want to make it kind of colory or flowery but it's it should be right at the top as you log into aqu schools like yeah yeah so um it should be where the intern it's going to be slow um and as soon as we click it it'll send you to Clover it
024has a direct link to our our point of sale and everything is is masked under their um secrecy privacy log on I did test it um earlier today I um or I should say a certain person gave dollar um to uh and this is the process that it comes to you go to their their website the person can put in their their contact information their card commission and then they um hit donate on the bottom um instantly they get a screenshot that says that the the receipt which received the donations received and they get whatever email address that they give will get that separate second receipt um at the same time I as the the the district Treasurer um I get an email saying that you've been paid you know so much money by this
025person and it gives their email address and and that and then I checked our bank account and it shows um that the dollar was deposited into our bank account so everything happens within seconds of each other and I can um because I get this this little email that says that we've been given a I can email them back and say you know contact this and that thank you very much you know um is there any more information that you wanted to give me on because the only thing it doesn't really have is a like a notes category specifying where spey where they wanted or where they needed I I talked to Clover and they said um without us upgrading like our platform for so much more a month or whatever and I said well we'll
026try just right now just to if once I get the the automatic email because it it it happens everything happens within seconds I can always reply back to them hopefully they're still online or on their phone or whatever and say can I have more information on where would you would like this donation to be applied or you know this or that or whatever and then when they get the donation I I didn't show it um because it's a screenshot of my email um but it gives the School's contact information inform um on the receipt of the donation given so if they wanted to follow up if um I F enough um they could always email and say hey this is you know blah blah but I can't get that extra extra little notes or specification
027without going to a whole another you know so much a month for for the process or the whatever so um for right now we're just going to see how this works out and then um you can still do Apple pay Google pay you know all that kind of stuff but it is on our website and it is live and it is so you can be emailing every donation to find out where they want this I'm kind of stuck because like I said unless we leave it's a a couple you know 100 to upgrade our our point of sale um system is that for month is that per month or is that just in general I believe we pay they take every month they take a certain percentage off of what we bring in from our
028from our Point sales so like if we're doing um uh football t-shirt sales basketball you know entries or whatever it's going to be more the percentage that comes out is more than like baseball softball where we don't have those point of sale tickets but I am doing a lot of like yearbook sales so it all depends on what typ of the year they don't want to say okay we're taking you know $500 every month or 100 every month so they say a percentage of everything that we collect is taken out and then the bigger the amount that we collect the bigger the percentages or that they do it as a percentage instead of a dollar amount so then that way my low sales you're not pulling into the red and and the high sales then
029you're coming out kind of you so the percentage would go up so it's not really a dollar amount for coming out each one okay well think I Wasing the same I think it was kind of the same thing you were on which was do we know if we were to upgrade it to that we have an idea of what like the yearly cost would be estimate you had said 200 and don't know that was just off the top of your head it was just off the top of it's a percentage Okay so thinking if it's $200 for year that makes sense to do it because the time you're going to spend working emails is more valuable than that $200 a year right and it you that and it just makes it more efficient to the
030system but that only works if we know what have a really good idea of what the increase would cost the school right because if it comes out that it's going to be a wash I know that the point of s system is is convenient people come in cards um hardly everybody car around them but um if it ends up being a watch then I mean there's really other than just having it to be a convenience it kind of GES itself and I I I argued until we got this we've only had this probably what three years four years before we didn't have any P system but when we started it at the time three or four years ago the card at the premium that we wanted to start at it would have been a wash
031and we would have made no money and for a school district where if you're paying for yearbooks or this or that then that money is going back into the the point of sale system it didn't really worked out at the time so we went down to the lower system so I'm not sure how it's going to be now but that's when we started the the level above it was taking away from those those areas instead of giving to them so as a school district I mean if it were a business and we were just selling stuff like t-shirts or whatever then I mean it would be a wash and it would be fine but because kids are raising money on certain things or were were replacing certain things then a wash isn't a isn't a
032good idea for school district were you saying this is the first time we've had that on the website so that by itself might actually increase the number of donations we're getting now it's right there people can see it without having to call the office to find out um I definitely would be interested in kind of revisiting this after we did it going if we approve it Wednesday to see if it makes Financial sense to upgrade because again you know if if you get 10 donations in a day and you're sending out 10 individual emails eventually that winds up not being an efficient use of the district's money to be paying you to if it's if it cost less to just have the automatic line on there where would you like this donation I'm excited about
033this notna lie so my L I'm excited about it okay we have nothing else on that the next item is the report on JB basketball and track Mr Hopkins uh members of the board the uh want to just go over the information you have the attachments and board docs I'm going to read over the notes I have are the same I just have some some side notes but this is for uh in response to Mr guff's request for H JB basketball and track so we actually broke it down into a junior high junor high school basketball because we have a number of our freshman and sophomores that play on the bar SE so we're trying to trying to be as diverse as we can here so you have Junior High School basketball you have a
034head coach there the cost basketballs uniforms a subtotal uh some other notes just for you to have um High School boys and girls practice 4 to 8:00 pm daily in the gym uh Pima County Parks and Recreation does offer sixth to eighth grade basketball the high school team to use the white activity bus for their away games one uh key element we'd have to focus on is we would need more Transportation Drivers so I've talked to say about this about trying to get more of of our other employees of their CDL license so that would be the challenge um High School tracking field there's the head coach cost uh now from what I uh you have a Canyon State athletic association cost per athlete uh we want to have at least 10 athletes you see
035the uniforms at least 10 times the amount and the reason is as you see in one of the attachments and board dos and just doing some research I believe uh 10 students is the amount to have at least a have a competitive team this was for March 5th 2014 there was an extracurricular Cur extracurricular extracurricular activities guidelines minimal participation of interner Scholastic this is passed by the board previously to try and have at least a good number of students versus a team of four or five students go to an away meet maybe the other team has 15 20 25 30 I'm just making up a number so uh I believe also uh in doing research the this was made in 2014 when AO was still in the AIA Arizona inter Scholastic Association hour with CAA
036um track and field February 28th practice would start May 4th regular season ends uh other notes of Interest number six Transportation will take place during the same season As baseball and softball so once again uh we would need to really focus on having more trans more drivers more people SC CDL any of our staff or how we could go about getting additional drivers for another wanted to to always be well if I if I understand correctly we um we might we might be able to do it with what with what we have we just we need we have Jose is our main driver like for example he just drove Friday to Saturday to and you need him to do it because he's the one who has the CD out but he also does the county
037so that's why Mi mention of of having additional drivers um try and just to see if we can get more feedback last time we we only put up a sign a signup sheet at the school office uh we should also probably address this with student councel to get their feedback see what what ideas they have um Melissa razio is the director of track and field all meets are on Saturdays so that might address the challenge of not having enough transportation drivers that for track and field the meets are on Saturday CLE so that is for your information and um com sure sure so if you call JB basketball which I don't know how much there's even a JB league in the CAA that you can bring up your seventh and eighth graders and then your
038high school kids your freshman sophomores that will never see the court they would be able to play on a JB level with your seventh and eighth graders and it would give those kids a chance to play some basketball if you called it JB right if you call it Junior High then you can't bring little freshman sophomores down to play play with them right as for transportation we'll never have so many kids that you got to send a bus driver you don't send a bus driver now with with the cheerleaders or whatever you just have the coach drive and so the coach would drive the white bus with with those kids in the bus right you'll never have more more kids than you do have space in the bus for those for those kids so you
039wouldn't have to have a bus driver am I right or wrong that's that's an option right then in high school to start off with huh to trct to start off with we don't have to start off with Disc Shop Hut long jump if we just entered kids in running events to start off with to start off the program to get kids interested even if it is five kids six kids then the the program will build on itself year after year after year so you don't have to go out and spend all this money to start off with if they run sprints distance relays participate which is what they did before we had a track team before we didn't have long jumpers discus I mean we were a lot bigger when we had all that right
040so you could you can do that without buying all that additional equipment again the coach can drive the white bus to your meets on Saturdays so you wouldn't have to have a bus driver if anything I'm saying is wrong just tell me I'm wrong those are options you know and and so I just we have a group of kids they can't they're no good at baseball and they're no good at softball and so they spend the whole spring doing nothing because they're just not good enough to to play you know those years in softball they have 26 girls out there you know and and 13 of those girls are never even going to see the field but they might go run on on a Saturday right and participate in in something and be busy and
041make grades so they can you know and so I I think the reason that they're looking at those ones is because our track is not up to code and wouldn't be not going to have here I know but if you're talking about them practicing they'd still be practicing they don't have to practice in the field though they don't have to practice on it they can run around the town too as long as they're running together because that's what they used to do at my high school well I'm thinking too if you're doing finished if we're running track events we'd have to have them set measurements we'd have to have the hurdles set at the specific lles Donnie I'm still speaking if we're talking about track events there are measured distances that have to be R
042so we could have them practice by running around town but if we're going to say okay now we're doing 100 yard dash then fine we can do it we'd have to have somebody go out and measure out 100 yards and somebody starting it and somebody stopping it and yeah we don't have to do hurdles but that is another running event like I'm saying if we can't practice if the field isn't if the track itself isn't up to the code of our conference to me I wouldn't be comfortable having students practice on that track all we need is one kid hit that curb and break an ankle and the school's liable for so make differ respectively you can take a drag pull it behind a tractor drag the track and the track is smooth enough 100
043yard dash still has a curve those are the things that because again if somebody running in the outside line and they take a fall and they hit their head on the side of our bleachers which are right there I had talked with Eric about this at one point and he mentioned that we have enough he said there is a possibility down the road of just replacing the track and we could do that without moving anything because we have so much distance between the bleachers and the football field but like I said just for for practicing even even though we know it's not going to be running meets there on our track but again we wouldn't want our I wouldn't want our students practicing on a field that is not as safe as it needs to
044be to qualify to be a Conference Track oh Mr Hopkins um if I what what if we what if we focus it looks like that option of of The meong Saturdays I think actually help us with the challenges that we have what if we really really focus on let's really focus on uh High School track and field just give it a shot I mean we have enough time in ADV event right now it's not till till the spring to really plan for it and even if we get 10 I mean it's it's a start I I can think of already one staff member right now could be a potential track and field coach works here on a regular basis he's he's done running and all the other schools he's worked at around Arizona if he
045would apply and then you know we go through a process and he's the best person selected um but Saturdays opens up an option of that maybe the first option would be a little a little too challenging to get into this year because it's in a few months but maybe we can focus on that High School track and fail start honestly I'm in agreement with you an I want to have as many sporting events our students to do part of but I want them to be up to the standard that they need to be and that's why when this has come up before I've always wondered if we've thought about cross country because there again we don't need a track for that and there's minimal equipment I just don't know what interest are on I just
046don't know what the interest of the students is the logic you're using right now respectfully right we couldn't play a softball game go walk on that Outfield go see the amount of rocks and things that are on that Outfield right if you're going to talk about something to be complet and save you could never play another softball game on that field you could never play another football game I me we played football you you saw how the football field wasn't better now but you saw how it was well look at the baseball field look at the goer holes and things that are in that field yes using the logic that you're using we don't have a safe field we don't have a safe anything other than a basketball court so it sounds to me like
047you're saying since these ones are already not as safe as they could be it doesn't matter if we add something it doesn't matter if we add something else that's not as as could you saying we ran track on that for 50 years and I never heard of a kid falling hit in their head on the concrete slap and standards have changed over the last 50 years what this an acceptable track I know that from completely different standard so yeah I agree we want to have as many options as we are and if you're pointing out the fact that we have facilities and sporting that needs more more maintenance to it then to me it would make sense to spend the money fixing those ones than investing in another one that's not going to be up
048to the Safety Stand and again I agree with you I want to have as many sporting opportunities for our students as possible I know that there are many students that that's what keeps them in school I don't want to be sitting at this table finding out that one of my students broke an ankle on the track that was definitely not up to the standard of our can I ask a question now um did we not put up a sign up sheet last school year for cross country in the office I thought we did for track and fill oh track and fill and how many did we get any people that signed up only had a few students but I think it was probably try and have a little more active campaign this year it's so
049it's probably at least what six five months ahead five months before I think that's something where if you do have some sh signing up and then showing up some interest generates among their friends more people because they see it happen a lot more competition for kids in the fall than there is in the spring because in the fall you have leading and football and so you almost bring in almost all your the majority of your kids and volleyball and so you have the majority of your kids involved in those Sports in the spring L you're competing against baseball softball cross country in the fall try spr I believe I believe the parks also does run a cross country they didn't do it last year but they did do it the year before yeah so I'm
050wondering why they did last year was there an interest what happened there but I mean there's definitely kids participating in these events so I don't think they did it for the older kids though really I don't I think it was just the younger kids yeah and there's no track at all how Parks no they ran they ran the football fi or the field the Little League field I think cross country is part of the Sor desert um Sports Le so hope they do do that I I don't know why B didn't participate but the other schools do participate and I believe is right after football and just before fo this next four yeah yeah they do have it out this morning desert and really I do think if we did go a little bit for
051some of the shorter sprinting competitions we wouldn't necessarily need the track we could measure that out when we have yardage markers on the football field already they could do 100 yard dash running from don't believe it's actually because of confence discuss anything else okay and if there's nothing else I'll go on to the next item which is the report of the school Mr President members of the board we have our Dynamic move on reading Co coordinators they are very dedicated um I'll take them seven days of the week and twice on Sunday so this lines up actually to a governing board go governing board goals goal one the governing board will receive beginning middle and end of the year student data with a focus on reading scores demonstrating growth on the D's reading benchmark so
052we have Miss C and Miss badis to share some you know this is critical I just remember teaching first grade for three years and our our our our mission at the school was if a child can read if they're safe the child can read they can do anything if they're safe they can do it even better so if you can read you can do anything that starts here so got hello again and good evening um as Dr sh have mentioned Miss marar and I are your moon one reading coordinators this year and we have the DBL beginning of thetion so just a quick review what is tibles it stands for dynamic indicators of basic early literacy skills so your key wordss here are early literacy skills in order for a student to be able to
053read they need to have good foundational skills in reading and that's what dibles assess all right more information about DBL here it's a literacy assessment collected by teachers interacting with students one in one when they are tested they are not tested as a group they are pulled out from the classroom one at a time in a different classroom to be tested um and then we do this three times a year the beginning of the year the middle and end of the year and that's what we call the Benchmark assessment more information here um Theos school has different subtest so these are the different subtest that the students took letter name influency when name ex segmentation fluency nonsense word fluency word reading fluency oral reading fluency and Maze for kindergarten they did the letter naming fluency
054until word reading fluency for first graders they did the letter naming fluency until the oral reading fluency and for second graders and up it's from the letter naming fluency until me so the higher the grade level the more subjects um these are our colorcoded indicators red in the next couple of slides you will see the numbers the figures the data um these are the indicators if you see red it means well below Benchmark that also means the student is significantly at risk for reading difficulties the yellow stands for below Benchmark that means the student is at risk for reading difficulties green is at Benchmark and blue is above Benchmark this is where we want to see our students now remember this is only the Baseline we only establishing the Baseline um we did the beginning
055of the benchmark test last month August 19th so we're barely in school for about two weeks when we started collecting this data um Miss bagar will dig more on this data okay so good evening everyone I am misses I am the kindergarten teacher so as you can see here oh before telling you about the data I just want to share it to everybody that our beginning of this uh beginning of the year Li assessment was conducted earlier this year than last year so for as teachers I I think we believe that it's better because you will be able to see the students who are at risk already especially students who are already in well below Benchmark and Below Benchmark so that we will be able to group them according to the to their level and
056data and then we will be able to give them um differentiated instructions so when we go to our um kindergarten data so as you can see there we have five students who are at well well below Benchmark and nine students who are at below Benchmark we have three students who are at Benchmark and we have one student who is above Benchmark I ask a question yeah sure are are any of those kids English Learners yes later I will show you that we we will show you the number of students who are em yeah I can tell you some of the ones at Benchmark came from the oh yeah for kindergarten we have the else because um only from first grade to third grade we being pulled out by our yes so as you can see
057here just like what M goate uh shared to us we have here the different um sub tests for kindergarten so from letter names bonic awareness letter sounds to coding word reading vocabulary and brand so for kindergarten um the strength that we have there is word reading fluency and vocabulary so as you can see we have there our um word reading fluency and vocabulary we have 12 students or 67% of our kindergarteners are already at Benchmark and for vocabulary we also have 11 students who are already at Benchmark so for our areas of focus we have letter naming and we also have letter sounds I have one question on the previous slide I just didn't know the ones where it's got White Stripes going through those were students are yeah no I think it means if
058they are starting to be assessed and they miss so many consecutive it just continues the test and doesn't let them finish so those are our risk indicators to so um we will now go to first grade so first grade we have six students who are at well below Benchmark four students who are below Benchmark seven and lastly we have seven St students who are already at Benchmark so for first grade we have um their strength is in decoding which we have um where is it we have nine students who are already at Benchmark and we have one student who is already uh at above Benchmark so I'm sorry to keep I keep so first grade we did have English Learners right there's no El in that group and any of these any of the Devils
059so Kinder yes the E is mixed up there the first grade group no second no third grade no yeah and then they'll they'll show it okay so for this data we don't have El students here um uh we will have another um data for them later okay so if you have if you have English learner kids this test a lot diff a lot more difficult for them than a than a kid that is not an English learn yes so then this would be screwed in that that's not the word I'm looking for it but it it it would be screed screwed thank you into into people thinking while these kids aren't doing very well but the reason why the statistics are are down is because we have kids that are English Learners mix into those
060groups so in kindergarten they are all mixed up uh those data in kindergarten they have uh all mixed up like uh English uh Learners and also so so in the in the first grade you take those kids out of out of these stats yeah from first grade to third grade are they are those kids tested anyway though yes different SL we have we also have their teacher for the n program so for um just like what I said for first grade their strength is in decoding and their area of focus is in letter names and word reading fluency so let's now go to second grade then again this data we don't have El students here so uh we have six students who are at well well Benchmark six students who are at below Benchmark five
061students who are at Benchmark and we also have five students who are already above Benchmark so for second grade their strengths are in Reading uh reading accuracy and decoding so as you can see here in Reading accuracy we have 16 students out of 22 who are already at Benchmark and for um decoding we have 16 oh no no 17 17 11 no 16 students who are already at Benchmark and we have one student who is already above Benchmark so for their area of focus we have reading fluency and we also have reading comprehension for third grade we have here four students who are already at who are who are at 12 below Benchmark and eight students who are below Benchmark four students who are at Benchmark and four students are already above Benchmark so for
062third grade their strength is in Reading accuracy so they have 15 uh students out of 20 so 75% of the class is already at Benchmark and we have there their area of focus we have letter sounds and decoding so here for the next slide we will show you the El students so as of the moment we have from first grade to third grade we have 16 students who are um El students so um I put here in my note we have from first grade we have four students second grade we have 11 students and for third grade we have one a total of 16 students for E so we have 13 students who are uh well below Benchmark two students who are below Benchmark and one student who are at benchmark all right what's our
063plan so our data is only as good as what we do with it so this is the plan that we have um for each classro to have whole group instruction that's strategically adding routine that addresses the foundational skills and we know the foundational skills are phone phonic pmic awareness you know some vocabulary in their comprehension and fluency um for identified theer two students you know um small group instruction according to D's results and provide differentiated instruction normally um theer two instruction would happen during Center time when they do their Center rotation small group um instruction um theer three um start progress monitoring every two weeks and additional daily small group instruction so the students in the two if the teacher met them in the morning there's an allotted time again during seventh period they will
064be met again during seventh period to provide that additional small group instruction so those students are like getting double dose of instruction one in the morning and then one in the afternoon and then we hope that when after school school shooring starts um we can offer that to our students who needs help inter session can also be an Avenue for that and then reaching out to parents and families um we have an upcoming parent teacher conference in two weeks so we can use that platform to share the dles res as well as resources for the families to use at home our kids that go are they able to do after school tring yes they have time to do that um there's a bus we do arrange for bus once that starts we're hoping to start
065in November you have any questions how will the reading intervention teacher be utilized to address well right now we just first we need uh intervention teaches be here so so the three intervention we have embedded in the schedule right aside from that we're thinking of um doing that so not during math instruction not during the core instruction for ELA um we still have to really look into it but at the same time we have to pull them 20 minutes a day but depending on the data and depending on our results and who our Focus withing I know it's easier to close the gap for first grade so maybe one of our targets will be first grade and then the second grade too and we I find our third grade um score seems like it's a
066strong group based on that data I'm not sure if um they'll need a lot of extra support but that's what I was thinking of the intervention but again still have to sit down and really nail it for for the timing and I don't have all the timings yet so are they going to be mostly in the primary area or are they going to be providing reading intervention and I don't have I don't have all the answers yet um I know a number of our kids are doing what is that thoughts study smart tring so those that are doing study smart toring will take note of them because they they see the teacher every day four times a week a number of them and then for those that do not have then then you really have
067to collaborate closely because we talked about really sitting down and to go about this and then from there because our our reading teacher is also has high school kids so this teacher has is doing uh call that the specials period three and period four and then period five or perod I can't remember who also has because this is a SP teacher as well so she have um 9 to 12 SP kids at one point for ELA so the other times then we will tap for for the intervention I don't have all the answers that's what I'm saying but we're going to use as many teachers as possible including our four teachers because we have that embedded in their schedule we just have to make sure because I don't we need to revisit it I've heard
068feedback about the afternoon maybe not as effective and you may need to move it a little earlier so so those things so again like you know there's basically no one best solution in everything we try not working and hearing feedback and we have to go back to the table sit down and then adjust the schedule that's one thing that I've heard that that the last year is is not as effective so we definitely have to revisit and from there her schedule will only have two periods of that for intervention she has two three she'll have three periods you'll use her for intervention what FS I don't know yet and then for our math teacher Soo Crossing finger so that you'll also be able to join the other times that should be available will also be
069t for intervention so so I said more the more people the better maybe just for the next time for you know since we are separating our general like English speakers from our El students I'd like to see data like broken down data on the El students because we just had the bands I want to see specifically where they're having a deficit because then I want to see where reading intervention is going to basically all of them is read but we're not getting the we I I recommended not to put it up there because we only have like they have the third grade data only one student I like I requested for as as much as possible if it can be just you know one data as a whole so it's not identifying anyone student but
070yes in the future we'll we'll have that I know it was there it was not comfortable this afternoon okay so maybe next time don't segregate the two I want to see them together as a whole class and at a full grade level what do we need to do for each I did recommend that but we didn't have a lot of time okay well we have time now for the next one yes we now have time for the next one it's just better to see all of them together so we'll see the whole Cort we did this so the same slides but just additional slide for E well you separate I want to see the broken down data where they're showing their deficit is it the letter meing is it the you know nonsense words different
071sub unless you're just going to combine them into a grade band I want to see all of the kindergarten data all of the first grade data not segregating e from your English speakers because I think you know yeah yeah yeah we talked about that earlier but the very short time frame that we had to turn around and submit and said you know what get it next time we will make sure that we have that get it's just better to have the whole dat then segreg right because then when you're providing your reading instruction and your intervention and your differentiated groups yeah you know what I mean you have to take that into account agre but one thing for sure interventionist will focus on the well below Benchmark of course yes not the below Benchmark but
072the well below kids they usually the [Music] ones absolutely there anything else thank you I think it was a great presentation thank you very much I think we're lucky to have you guys than item um mine is going to be pushed to October okay is that us no it's the uh um um jrc oh yeah yes we're going to move that to October yeah yeah okay if there is nothing else I will ask I make I will second all those in favor pass [Music]
