Mr kersner just present oh stand by on repeat holding pattern for a second standing by till I start the recorder almost there then I'll start the roll again all right here we go roll call Mr Hopkins Mr kerer just present Miss Olen here Mr Guthrie Miss Rodriguez Dr soltero Dr cholt miss valella all president account okay may I have a motion to adopt the agenda I will make the second all in favor go ahead all in favor say I I all opposed approved please stand and Jo me for the Pledge of Allegiance Pledge of aliance FL of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God andice okay look like we have no public comments before us so we'll go past that to the first informational item
is Administrative employment of principal mercy and Mr President members of the board um Mercy has been interviewed and reference checks for the position of prk2 great no board action necessary this is a study session okay anybody have any questions for discussion you want to look over the attachments first yeah I have a discussion okay discuss I think you did a very good job in this pck I can't think of anybody see maybe but Mercy been here for a long time she's fantastic I can't think of a better that's just my opinion I am extremely comfortable and excited about this pick for principal I haven't felt this excited since we brought Lance on board so I was really excited about that this guy here um I actually do have a question question um how Miss Mercy
how are you going to be able to um fill all your hats sure sure Mr now um because I know I can't do all the so many different things so one student council advisor I think that's going to be their approv tonight is going passed on and another thing that's really very heavy on me and it's one of the things that's very important for me is the academic advisory for for high school and I have added a line item in i c one grand to make sure that we have one third grade level to track credits and you know mentoring mentoring KPS and there will be strategies in place just for that and then we have I also have to pass on the move on the reading so I've talk to the two which will
I presented tonight because that's another thing that's very important for me very personal that's since conception I want to make sure that we have the right I think those are three heavy ones we are still in the process of thinking one more strategy for the scheduling okay see that guy sit next turn his job load's going to get a little heavier a little bit of Delegation to happen and I've had a few people ask me over the week how the search was going and after the we had finalized with the agenda was I was able to tell people I said well it looks like we'll be discussing and voting on mercy and the the community members I've mentioned that too were also very pleased by that decision um we do have a question though if
you're going to be announcing football games that that that's the that's the key to this learning now every yeah now you could just delegate that we could have Lance come back every now and then for guest appearances no I agree with Eric I'm pleased with this choice and it's um to me it's important that the district grow its leadership from within when it can and I think you're also somebody that everybody knows the staff the students you're you're you're already here they already know who you are and they already know you have a position of authority so yes ma thank you any further just again Lance wish you the best thank you so much thank you for staying on you didn't have to really really appreciate it no won do that until okay the next
item on the agenda then is approval of additional summer hours for July prek program for Runa Mr President members of the board r c prek director is requesting additional hours of work during the summer from July 8 to 11 and July 15 18 there is no board action necessary at this time this is a study session okay she going to be teaching kids or she just good preparations well you know you have she she was very she's very meticulous you Mrs cot she did uh gave us an attachment that we put for you guys to see she's going to just uh enrollment registration scholarship and Grant application and ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations um proposal she was also focus on processing R um Child Care Health consultant meeting with them uh attend mandatory
training of regional scholarships and prepare training materials for staff so she's going to be getting stuff done for the whole year it's like she always does very very meticulous she does a great job she's fantastic with the administrative as well as well as with the kids so she made let's keep going on the agenda here go with approval of employment for pero Andra June and July yes sir sorry about that Mr President members of the board the administration is requesting set on be added to the work in June Summer School from June 3rd to the 6th 10 to 13th and July jump start from the 8th to the 11th and 15th to 18th no board action necessary this is a study session not item one okay any questions or discussion on no and the next
item is the extra pay position Employment Group number one Mr President members of the board the following individuals in group one I'm requesting extra pay volunteer employment for the correspond positions you have your name listed there in the responsibilities um Dr sholz and I are working out a few more uh final names that should be added for the Wednesday meeting but that's the majority of the uh of the extra pay volunteer positions um no board action necessary this is a study session atem all okay and we they're split into group one and group two because group two essentially is all of lon's offspring so easier for him to easier for him to abstain from that rather than going individually in line item so next one is the extra pay position Employment Group number two can
can I can I actually say something about group number one or ask a question yes um are these the same advisors that were previous for this last school year you know what um I Mr President Miss Olson I will uh call on some some have changed I'll call on Dr sh I'm more I'm actually more concerned about the high school ones that's the ones I would really like to know about I'll call Dr shab and his team to uh elaborate on that more Dr Dr con as you know she Junior advisor advisers um Miss Lopez I've taken that over so those ones are needing um freshman advisor I don't FR is it is okay they supposed to be following that's what I was just going to ask if they were actually going to stay because
like because I know that like when I was in high school the class advisor for the Freshman followed them all the way to senior so that's what's going to happen okay so then like Mr B he'll end up going to a different one when that when that year goes up okay back on okay so so um Mr for like the past three years has always been the senior class sponsor because the class before their junior class sponsor didn't go over or left or didn't want to move with the class and he's really good with all of the seniors and he done it before so um for the past three years he's always been the senior class theor class auor um The Freshman Class sponsor is now going to be high oh no the Freshman CL
sponsor this year is now going to beor she can't move right so um but the only one moving with is deloma deloma was the sophomore class sponsor this year and she's going to be the junior class sponsor for next year but she has that but that's the goal though is to have them move up okay okay ultimately but it doesn't I understand yeah okay I was just curious not yet Bo basketball basketball boys no basketball coaches not yet that's in process Mr Ho [Music] Mr yeah I saw saw an advertisement on Facebook mention Facebook our website and we actually have an interview set up this week already perfect okay said next item is extra pay position Employment Group number two Mr President members of the board the following individuals in group number two are requesting
extra pay volunteer employment for the corresponding positions you have them listed there on their positions word actually necessary at this time this is a study session item okay any question or discussion are I have a question so head coach gets paid assistant coach gets paid correct volunteers do not so I noticed that cheer has two assistant how do that how does the pay work head head coach say it again head coach head cheer coach we have a head cheer coach and then we have two assistant cheer coaches how does the money get split split if it's how does that work well from from my understanding um I'll turn this over to our high school team I'm sure they can elaborate on that Dr sh your team so what we've done in the past we we've
also had two head coaches co-head coaches and they just split that s okay now I I don't recall been much longer does a sport like cheer have more assistant coaches than other sports no uh uh Carol is supposed to be a volunteer volunte be okay I was just I was just curious there were two so we'll have two getting the full salary yeah okay just like with football and basketball and any other sport we uh the head coaches input is taken to who gets the St and and usually they do the same about who gets the PID okay on the agenda it does say assistant Cher coach for munte so yeah on the Wednesday meeting it'll say volunteer okay that's the Tyle on my part okay anything else on that item we'll go on to
approval of the annual performance-based compensation for the superintendent Mr President members of the board um approval of the annual Performance Based compensation for the superintendent for achieving of performance goals for the 23 24 school year U the performance-based composition that may be earned by the superintendence 5% 100 base salary no board action necessary to the study session I moment you have attachments uh that that we put in your board dos um I wanted just first to call your attention to the superintendent goals uh document I'm not going to go through every goal but I'm just going to highlight for the the interest of time uh you have also in there two artifacts that I really wanted to focus on and we touched on this in May but I wanted just to revisit again you have
an artifact on mission and vision just so you can see that this is this has been ongoing this is the last two years this is a process so you see what we have for our vision and the mission statement action steps and and as you have if you want to go back and forth um on the superintendent goals related to the mission and vision part just really highlighted um this year as far as when we went out to the community and got some feedback at the Western Pima County community council meeting we had actual participants give us feedback on on what they would like for us to to focus on also as well with uh the vision and mission statement and also you have uh on the on the uh document January 31st highlighting a
PD with the staff we also sought input from the staff on vision and Mission uh if you go the other attachment and well I'll get to that last the the next page page two I really wanted to highlight this for you because this goes back to uh to my um when we had interviews two years ago and this was actually a goal that I talked about and and this stayed as a focus for for us as a leadership team number three goal it talks about the oala for K8 this is a a projected it's not definite but it's projected that for elementary Ka there's a good chance we'll go from seven out of 10 to nine out of 10 points but also what I really wanted to highlight was we had a 45% 45% of
our English Learners showed proficiency level growth so they went either from a pre-emergent to emerging emerging to a basic basic intermediate that's that's is quite an accomplishment so I really wanted to highlight like that for you since it's talking about academic achievement and the one we really are really excited about is projected results for high school if you see uh last year high school at five out of 10 eight out of 10 and that those 10 points are five points are for growth on the aala five points are for proficiency so as you can see there's a good chance we might go from eight out of 10 to 10 out of 10 36% of our high school English Learners showed proficiency level growth so I really wanted to highlight for you from those the the
very last um uh the the other attachment there on the certified Sal schedule that artifact I want to highlight for you because that's actually a benchmark that we wanted to focus on the first year we really focused on the retention compensation but but this year we really focused working with our true professionals Consultants I'm going to highlight uh the certified salary schedule as you see we're able to have a 1% increase in each step but also we were able to what other districts do whether it's Gilbert hegley or Sunnyside unified in Tucson collapse the classroom s fund into the base salary so it was it was this is something that our consultant helped us out with so that's for for you to have that that goes back to the uh the superintendent uh goals the
document sheet at believe us on the fourth page Benchmark seven review pay and benefit salary scale so wanted to highlight for you that these goals were a focus not just last year they were ongoing they they they were every evolving um we had we we hit these goals we on on artifacts for each goal um but I really wanted to highlight those three artifacts especially that academic achievement that is big and as you can see uh Mr President members of the board on page two of the uh Golds document under number three gold it has section B really wanted to highlight those meetings because that was all four of us meeting with the professional Learning Community team team leaders on a regular basis during the aala test so we were actually looking at every student's
K3 4 to 6 7 8 9 12 we were looking at the proficiency level when they were going to test trying to set up when they test based on who has more time to do more preparation uh if a Kinder first second grader or emergent they could use more extra study time so all of us meeting in room 7even we had a few sessions in in in our in my office next door or we all were looking at the data ongoing on a daily basis I really think that helped in addition to the great PLC and the teachers in the classroom they all had the data in front of them too everyone knew the names of the kids what the scores were how close they were to the next cut score level so uh that's
what I really wanted to highlight for you um took a lot of work but it was well worth it was well worth it so that's for you to have and that's all i' say based on many many factors of the last year you definitely earned the performance pay for in my opinion it's um been nice both uh both with the performance of the school and even as importantly the communication with the the board on to anybody [Music] else okay then we'll go on to the next item which is approval of District signers for the a USD bank accounts Mr President members of the board to help the district guarantee checks and Anis our account National Bank Arizona a request is being made a recommendation from the auditor the the recent audit for the board to
approve a change in signers on a Us's accounts the recommended signers are right there for you to see attached as an attestation we must submit to National Bank upon approval no board action necessary this is a study session item one one question I have about this is will we if we vote on Wednesday to approve new principal will we not need to update this to include her name on it and should we not just go ahead and update this now for Wednesday uh that that that can be an option sir um I I could talk with Miss about that option between now and Wednesday and we can figure out um if it's something that we we'll move forward with or if we're good with those four signers but um we can have a definite for
sure for the meeting Wednesday okay you have two signers on every check yes sir yes sir we have [Music] two yes okay anything further on that item if not then we're on to the intergovernmental agreement with Pima County Joint technical education District Mr hop members of the board annually the Pima County Joint technical education district and satellite the AL Unified School District agre to an intergovernmental agreement IG for the operation and funding of the JT program the agreement is attached and approved signed by a Us's legal council Mr hord reviewed it looks good this is what all the other uh uh Pima County districts are doing as well um no board action necessary this is a study session item one uh Mr Hopkins Mr Guffy as of right now we have a we have Set
uh the Aerospace Mr chigi we have we're focusing on also maintaining the electronics program uh the culinary arts program and also uh we have uh another program that we're we're planning to introduce architectural drafting it's a classroom that it's a program that that all other uh districts in Arizona are implementing Catalina Foothills Morana sunite unified are are implementing that program it's big and so we're taking a big step working together as a leadership team to have that come to fruition for this coming year perfect any other questions or discussion the next item is the approval of Soul Source vendor for Power School Mr President members of the board I'm going to uh bre through this explanation and Mr Casey is going to be available for any questions you might have he's really taken this project
uh by the horns and so uh AO school is looking at getting the online registration in online forms officially called enrollment Express and ecollect from Power School due to the total amount Mr Casey looked for other providers to get quotes and reached out to edup point the only provider on Mojave Cooperative to get a quote and they told Mr Casey that their online registration product will only integrate with her student information system doc sign had reached out last fall offering online forms including registration but their product will only allow us to collect the data electronically it will not transfer automatically into Power School power school has also bought out in school messenger our emergency contact system I will turn it over now to Mr Casey in case you have any questions he is here to
to uh elaborate any more Mr Casey is there anything else you want to add and you work real hard on this um Mr President honorable members of the board I want to say one thing um this product the power schools on enrollment Express um does integrate easily so parents can go into Power School account most of the information will already be there that is already available in power school will be posted into that form already and then if there are changes they can submit that and from the school side it can be approved electronically so we may not need any parent to come to the school office unless it is necessary then there's a change of address they need to upload certain forms electronically but in case verification we decide we when we decide the
policy procedures for that if when there is an upload of document if they need to come in in person they may have to bring it in otherwise for Renewal parents may have to can be done from home from the mobile app or the laptop and then we checked compared with the other providers there wasn't anything that is not even close in functionality to that piece of access and AV this product was provided by in the past it was provided by a third party and Power School bought it and now it is part of power school so that is why it is the only provider power school is the only provider power school is going out and buying all the services that are linking that happened with school messenger have emergencies us to be in school
messenger but then halfway between this year they were bought out by power school so um now we have no choice it's the it's the we have choice but it's what integrates with power school so we don't have to upload every every single time I would have to be uploading every single um parents you know emergency contact but right now School messenger grabs from power school and then automatically sends it without me having to go in and download or expor or import or however you need to do it but they bought out um School messenger uh during last year so all I'm want to say is I'm personally super excited about this not having to fill out tons of paperwork so I'm super excited families that AR to yeah we will have paper forms available and
we will also have assistance like computer available in the office and provide assistance they want but by appointment this will be effective for 2425 right yes perfect I'm good with that I'm excited you too okay then the next item first reading of AO Unified School District governing board policy adoption Mr President members of the board um this policy update aggresses Technologies including the use of General generative artificial intelligence AI programs and Platforms in the classroom policy IGN and DB use of Technology resources and instruction no board action necessary this is a first reading only uh you have I believe you have the have the attachment there um as you see on that first paragraph This policy update addresses Technologies including these as I stated right here you go to the next page talks about use
of Technology resources and instruction cloud-based systems but it really page two artificial intelligence programs of proper use of how programs can be effective at enhancing student learning PR students so with the competencies and knowledge needed in the digital age its youth should also be guided by responsible and ethical considerations including mitigating bias promoting transparency and promoting AI benefits to all students use of AI programs in the classroom should be approved by the site or District administrator and teachers instructions and expectations should guide the classroom used AI teachers should include relevant lessons on correct and responsible use of AI and students should be taught standards regarding plagiarism and source citation should use these guidelines AI is used for a school assignment AI use should be guided and monitored by teachers and are administrators and should align
with the district's guidelines and policies including any relevant student R responsibilities AI resources should be available to all students including both disabilities and English language Learners use of an AI system should comply with the family educational rights and privacy IA engion support data privacy and security so this can count as the first reading and on Wednesday can just make reference to this again as a second reading but um any questions or comments or this is artificial intelligence it's here I think it's kind of funny that at the same one when we're talking about artificial intelligence we're talking about eliminating tapes and floppy jks saw that the last time I saw a tape going history being erased or Commodore 64 I used to play Oregon Trail on Commodore 6 okay if there's nothing else on that
we'll go to the next item which is a report on Bibles and aella scores Mr President members of the board um um this is information perer request to Gover board member Mr rguez I believe on dibles and Zella and as as one of the board members said earlier this is really building our leadership capacity so we believe in our staff having a chance to present so we'll turn it over to I Believe Miss Mr Casey right always always love sharing data with you especially that important um I want to share with you the comparison between the fall and the the spring results and just focus on this one first so this this colum is well below Benchmark during the fall and we had we had a total of 34 kids for the district right and
then next is below Benchmark have 18 at Benchmark was 15 above Benchmark is 15 okay and then we look at that we want more blue and green and so we want the red so at first this is all red right so now we are at the end the the end of your assessment this one changing or you know what's the right word for it smaller is what you want to see right so you get that and then from here I just made this chart here okay so so that's the fall that's the spring we want this to go down right and we want this to to go up so that's what we want to see at the end of the year so for the composite score obviously this all went down that's what we wanted
and this all went up sense and this one you know we have some from below that moved over here we did not want that it still happened but most of them has moved to blue and green and that's a yay some of them stayed it Mak sense I know um I know it's important for us to see the breakdown per subtest so for letter nameing fluency which is just for Kinder and first grade um yes there's 53% to this that is growth there but we still have a big chunk that is still below grade level that's about 47% 47% so obviously we have to do something about that pic awareness feny again Kinder in first grade this went down right from 24 to 21 24 to 3 and this kind of went went down but
I think they all moved over here but overall this is gr is this the the nonsense words no not yet phic awareness oh um the nonsense for I think is the next one the sounds and the words next one is this one not sense word fluency letter sounds um we're still seeing this dropped this dropped this went up this went up that's what we wanted so yes positive job word reading fluency this went down went down went up went up again that's what we wanted not as much because this is still 41% total that is below great level but still you know there's there's there's the growth and the oral reading fluency went down went down went up went up again that's what we wanted oral reading flu fluency accuracy oral reading but just the
accuracy this has always been the strength um well below is just 10% six so that's both a total of 14% is below grade level and the rest is on grade level which is 86% that's always and I think one of the things I really like to see is the accuracy going up because when your accuracy is up you know the kids are reading and they're reading accurately once you take the time factor out of it you'll see that the words per minute increase well well you could see they can read more when you take away that time um limitation but when the accuracy is increased that's a big plus yeah so this continues to be a strength so I say like what whatever our teachers are doing the primary it's working the maze this is
the reading comprehension basic reading comprehension just for second and third grade this went down went down went up went up this definitely went up but still this is a big chunk this is 52% of our kids are still below grade level in reading comprehension so there's growth we are still about half of our kids reading below grade level this is our goal for them to comprehend what they read for them to comprehend what they read they have to read accurately and they have to read fluently and for that to happen we just have to keep on reading uh teaching them explicitly all the foundational reading skills so that's that's what the move on and reading is about the ad children right yes so that's I think that the next slide is telling us some of
our strengths overall growth we have a 31% growth of at and above benar marks at fall we had 36% it went up to 67% of kids from kinder to third grade that is at and above we at an above Benchmark and that's really a plus and again oral reading accuracy is has always been our strength 86% of our kids um is there and every subset has shown significant growth in students who who reached or exceeded the benchmark so that's that's cause for celebration but this is move on and reading and when we say move on and reading they can we have we want to make sure that we also want to focus on who are not yet there um okay the next steps who are not yet there so it's important to know that we
still have that much that we need to help so what are our next steps we have partner with study smart tutors they have started last week we had eight kids that started working with our two tutors and today I I was expecting six more but five showed up but I believe tomorrow we'll have one more that will be showing up so that's a total of eight six 14 kids that's showing up for move on and reading so right now it's just second and third grade we're hoping so I've talked to study smart tutors earlier I try to um negotiate with them that hopefully after the first batch so after the first 14 is done um we can serve the first grade and kindergarten who are also below grade level in in in dibles and let's
see so this what I talk about then we need to build we need to continue to build the foundational reading teacher capacity so teacher teacher matters they cannot give what they do not have so it's important to you know invest in professional development two of our teachers are trained this lecture training designes right we have Miss Ina and miss miss agar as well she's here right now I've invited her to join us she's she's a co- move on when reading director starting next year oh I think it still has to be approv soending and being positive um they will facilitate a couple of training Workshop sessions with all the reading teachers because they attended six days of intensive training I was hoping that they can Echo all those six and we I know you'll know
that if you teach whatever you have learned then the more that you internalize it and you'll be able to teach your class and stay with so so I'm for that so they'll be teaching and they know that and I'm hoping to schedule that before the school year starts then we we need to have refresher training for M plus intervention this is the the tier three intervention that we provide our kids that are not yet on gr level and obviously we need a PD on reading comprehension because again um a number of our like half about half of our kids are still below grade level terms of reading comprehension so so I find this very important I will work closely with a Cove on and reading directors making sure that you know they they'll be confident
in their new roles and we need to establish extra tier three support during the day as early as September it's important I'm hoping that we can continue to partner with study smart teers and that's all I have for tonight if there have any questions if you have a child who is an English learner say that again if you have a child which is an English learner okay but he being examin she he'll be yes she will be assess in a Zella she'll be provided with um eel support so there's an NE teacher and at the same time there'll be a the three support for for the child so you're doing this this a session on these kids and you have kids that are English Learners right you would naturally think that their grades are going
to be lower because still learning to speak the language so even though half of our kids are are at bench Mar Below in Reading part of that is because they're still learning to speak English right yes and a lot of times I found with that when them teaching e students they're able to decode words and bond words but it's the comprehension piece that is yeah that's that's the kind of the barrier because I've had readers who have been e students become at readers but when it came to the comprehension piece where they're understanding what they said that's where the problem started so then you have to BU like support for that
