interesting our kids in our classrooms Generation Z is are the age group from born from 2000 to 2023 uh leadership don't go alone integrating education and Technology datag gon visual creating engaging self check pixel art assignment for any subject Choice boards with rigor let them speak number talks for all grades reading groups and centers 101 digital skills via passion projects seven positive behavior strategies Collaborative Learning strategies Five Below five mentoring practicing resilience while learning from students strategies for a captivating classroom so uh AO Community that's the conference that we went to um Angelina can we go to the pictures please so we can just share some of that the pictures from that very special day it's the first time we had we've had a team go to the Beyond textbooks conference called the super conference

in Bale Unified School District wanted to share that with everyone um we uh were we came out on the big screen they had all of the school districts their pictures on the big screen and there's a I mean I hope you all can see that uh we've been a partner with them since 2022 I I got real excited when I saw that because that really I believe helped us uh improve our our grades at the Elementary and high school level we can go to the next picture we wanted to make sure we were happy and having fun and left to right we have Miss lria with her green bow and miss darara miss Fernandez they didn't know I was going to put this up so so thank you guys missena and Miss maningo uh part

good even even everyone even community and we are so first and foremost we are very privileged to be able to take part that what a a lifetime for me it's my second year here and that's my first ever super conference literally super conference because we came across with a lot of teachers across Arizona and we get to connect with them and uh greatest takeaway I had personally because we went to like there were uh probably like over 50 breakout sessions and we wanted to be in those sessions all those sessions but we can't because we're given only like six hours or seven hours to to attend to the session so we decided our team decided to decided to um uh we agreed to go to different sessions so we can bring home something different to

the class and to our fellow teachers and we we are excited as well to uh bring to our classroom what we have learned for me personally I have a very wonderful experience reaching out and be able to realize that what we experience here is also the same experiences that our our fellow teachers across the country that they experien so it like it's an affirmation that we can get through this so what really stand out for me that time is my uh the topic that was about the use of technology in the classroom so I was thinking like well this is really interesting because how though we are a small town and a small school we are also not behind far behind from technology we have L air we have where using um uh uh class

Google classroom and when I start there class tags everything we have those things when I sat there and listened very excited to for new things to learn uh we were introduced with schoy it's I think it's attached to power school but uh they didn't talk about more uh about itly because it was something like we have to purchase so we focus on the use of Google classrooms and and uh it's not something new but it's something an old school but it's something that we we can benefit from and aside from that I uh also went to one session that really excites me that time I said wow this is really great because it's about global uh making the Learners become Global thinkers connecting from AO to the next district from that District to the next

state and so forth and so on so I think if I'm going to rate my experience as a teacher there now especially to add to that is meeting a few Filipinos who were there that time is my um learning that there are other things that I need to learn more and the additional knowledge that I am willing to share to my colleagues who are not who are not able to to join us so I think that would be my fellow teachers of different experience so they want to share it too okay um good evening everyone hello guys um I was so excited when I was told by Sir that I will be part of that conference um you're so eager to learn something more or something new uh among all the sessions that I've been

through one that I have you know I think it's like my that I I can share especially to my colleagues that uh when I went to the uh the par professional I was supposed not to be there but then the session that I've chosen was cancelled so I have to transfer from that to the other room but then even if um uh it's something new to me but because of that session I've learned so many things I understand better how am I going to accommodate the power how will I be able to help them in able to cater the Learners especially when they are assisting the learning so I think that's one of the great things that I've learned from that so thank you thank you everyone for us to go there thank you to

our board members um Dr s our superintendent and our principal Dr Lans so my dear parents and students my colleagues good evening and um this Beyond textbook conference is um um an Open Door it opens the door for me to um keep a breast with what's new in the field of our profession and uh thank you so much for the opportunity for being one of the members who attended and this recent Beyond textbook training that we attended is truly very instructive very informative and very reassuring and I have purposely chosen the sessions in instructions as mentioned a while ago by our superintendent and I focus myself in the instructions and culture instructions basically focus on strategies and methodology of teachings and culture one aspect of that is about culture focus on cler management and best

practices and as I um talk to my colleagues we do share same experiences even though they've been in the long profession already and I am mayi and I I'm mayi in the sense that uh we in we are in a new um country new environment and it's kind of different to where we we used to teach in our um country so here I was able to learn how to survive and tribe especially in handling Middle School classrooms because we know very well that middle CL middle uh middle schools uh are really tough and very challenging especially with classroom management so most of the five PS that I have chosen focus more on classroom management it's one way for me to cope and understand and immerse myself with a new culture and aside from that I

also attended um about how to handle severe behaviors this training provided me basically a wide range of new skills in managing my classroom management and it provided a professional growth to refresh my knowledge and to keep in touch with new strategies that I can use in teachings in my field in social studies so giving us the opportunity and how I wish that my other colleagues will also do the same for them to experience also what we have Beyond text training is a lot and thank you for supporting and giving us this opportunity thank you us you uh a USD for this scaffolding and good evening thank you hi good evening to those who don't know me I'm alya I'm the fifth and sixth Ela and social studies teacher and first first and foremost I would

like to say thank you to the administrators for for giving me the opportunity to be part of a BT super Conference held last September 29 so if I had to rate my experience in the BD super conference last September 29th from 1 to 10 it will definitely be 10 and if I want to describe my experience in three words it would be engaging engaging because we have in the sessions that we I attended we are all engaging we were all engaging we have discussions we exchange thoughts thoughts and ideas we have interactive conversations we we were given task and we accomplish it and we um we we we learned by doing it in our sessions that I had attended there second is it's um um extremely helpful for me as a teacher I have attended

five sessions so let me get my copy um I have attended maintaining balance routines and procedures I have attended Clos reading implementation changing behaviors through restorative practices I have attended collaborative strategies and um reading groups and centers and the one that most struck me most the one that struck me most is the reading groups and centers because it focuses on the the fluency and comprehension and of course the students are grou with their reading ability so it makes easier for them to do their test because they were grow in their reading ability and third is I could describe it the experience was very really very excellent in terms of food in terms of venue the place was very nice the scho is very nice big spacious it's clean the accommodation we were welcomed with a

band and the red carpet but we were able to take a picture we forgot and then the speakers who made really the amazing speakers they they anwers our questions they um they responded well to us they demonstrated the the the session well they explained well and then it was really productive day even though it's just one day but we learn a lot there so it does not only impact me as a teacher but as well as my students thank you thank you so as the elementary teacher I'm the last one so well um who among you have walked into a red carpet with a band and a lot of photographers come into you like they pepper taking pictures of you so we did that very first thing in the morning when we arrived we welcome

with a band with a red carpet with people cheering for us and then when we got in 700 people 700 plus people in there already and the atmosphere is really welcoming so it was just a really really nice experience so um but uh I think we all learned a lot of things different things and um one thing that has struck me the most with with what I've attended is the data gun visual so I know that the school right now is uh really focusing on Dat and making it um better so that uh we'll have better grades and score so um this one this topic specifically went through the importance of making students aware of their data and their scores so um the key points that I've learned there are um it's both it's both

for you and for us teachers and for the students that they know their data that they are aware of where they are and when data turns visual or when we we show it to them and when they know it students can interpret and grow as Learners because they are aware and when they see where they are they will take responsibility in action toward it self-efficacy is that what we keep on repeating there and another thing is the immediate feedback they need to know right away what they did wrong and correct it right away so it stays with them so the the wrong things doesn't stay with them long but the right things stays with them right away and then um one more thing that I'm going to implement in my class is the assessment tracker

and I would also like to share this to my colleagues because it will motivate students and will make them engage in the dialogue about about their learning and though data seems to be a big thing but it can actually be implemented in little kids too so that those are the things that I've learned and um one more thing in that specific um topic that I have attended I I didn't know that I was sitting beside a superintendent and I was I keep on talking with a assistant principal and it just let me know oh yeah by the way I'm from I'm in Globe and I'm an assistant principal of this school and and I kept on telling you thank you very [Applause] much before you continue I'm just gonna add for the record that Eric

K Rich has joined us by phone now good okay uh next we have first uh thank you to our teachers um we really wanted to make sure that we share the experience of everyone here in the community and also those that are listening throughout AO next we have a uh for the second part of my report we've been in a constant uh renovation process from July 1st 2022 to now so I want to highlight uh our bar football field renovation kind of want to share with all of you if you can look on the screen the top left is is the before you remember what you would see out there the North End Zone area and now on the bottom is the after just really think it's it's critical and important that as a community

we have the best looking facilities we're going to do our best you know uh it it's our Texas stadium right and I'm not a Cowboys fan but we want our football field to look like Texas stadium or Candlestick Park or Soldier Field but our our student students and our families and our community deserve that so I want to recognize some some really hard workers who really helped us out volunteers strictly volunteering on on their own time and I want to call them up here we have some hats for them now you guys can pick the hats you want if they don't fit let us know we're ordering some some some more hats but something a little different from the traditional certificate so I'm going to call up um our volunteers who helped out I I

see I see some of them in the audience today want to call up first Mr Weber will you please come up here Sir Mr Gibson is Mr Gibson [Applause] here Mr Ka Mr Ka here Mr Le up [Applause] [Music] here we have any other of our volunteers who left out with the scrap metal clearing out in the North End Zone um now uh you guys can pick the hats um like I said if they don't fit please forget you right you guys you guys just wanted to really uh uh just to give them a big thank you uh they they took time out of their schedule and they did a great job as you can see and I also want to thank I I had asked a few of our couple of our managers to

be here as well I know Mr cotton could be here but I ask Jose he can also come can also board members would you like a picture with them a picture you guys yeah I tried to happen I like one two three and then one more one two three nice thank you um you guys want to say any words Mr Mr Gibson whoever guys me they were sweating out there tell you we got a beautiful again Mr Gibson Mr Leber Mr thank you yes sir there something I'd like to say real F yes sir it's not a coincidence since your arrival that many things are getting done on this campus and this football field been like this for 20 30 years and since you're arrival it looks like it does so I think you should

members of the board um Mr etor Strada special education department and support consultant has been working with Mr darara a special director on revising the special education department recordkeeping EIP Pro is a special education platform that is designed for ease of use this system provides the ability for special education staff to ensure paperwork compliance and storage the system stays updated with new regulations based on Arizona specific laws and revised statutes that cover special education the system is designed to enhance compliance and ease to ensure that students who receive special education support are provided with a specific resources to address their needs before I make the recommendation Mr Strada is here Wednesday and Friday he travels from out of town and he just I want for all the board to to know he is here to

answer any questions but he wanted to talk a little bit about EIP Pro and just how much more efficient uh the process is versus the one that we have right now Mr stra thank you for being here thanks sir uh members of the board thank you all very much for um allowing me to be a part of your team in order to enhance and uh rebuild your special education department when I first came in here it was extremely difficult for me to even start to understand what was going on because of the C software um it's a it's an extremely not user user friendly program and I had a really hard time working with it e Pro on the other hand I've been working with for 10 or 12 and I'm not a I'm not

a member of e Pro they're not paying me to do this so this is just based on my experience um it is a program that will absolutely um as Dr sotero said uh every year uh EIP Pro updates the software based on Arizona revised statutes that that have been updated they make sure that it's the most updated uh compliance the records in there have the most updated compliance uh based on revised statutes um and and storage wise I have it working out of town I do a lot of work sitting at home behind my computer it was extremely difficult for me to even start um helping the special Department work on their paperwork because there wasn't anywhere that I could go I actually physically had to come here to look through some of the files

with thep Pro we can upload everything in it storage it's an unlimited uh storage space so signature pages reports um outside of the the actual IEP and and eligibility documents you know psychologist reports speech reports we can upload those into each student's physical profile and it makes bringing the team you know being in AO we have speech pathologists that work in Phoenix that do virtual having them uh giving them the opportunity to be able to look at real time information uploaded into the program it's it makes the process so much easier and the the user aspect of it it's extremely user friendly it goes you know spot by spot by spot through each one of the through each of the processes and it just makes these teachers these special ed teachers I wanted to to

recognize mrar um being up here they have so much to do paperwork is absolutely one of their uh one of their major priorities especially at case managers in order to allow them to utilize their time more efficiently EIP Pro allows them to um the way that it flows is so much easier um and it's so much more user friendly so I just I really uh wanted to offer you guys were given a copy of the side by side that I presented if you guys have any questions I would love to be able to answer any questions if you have any at this time if not I highly encourage request ask that you guys approve the the switch from C's to e Pro if you guys have any questions I'm more than welcome to I'm more

than happy to answer I'm at a disadvantage who you represent sir um so I have uh Carl graso is the CEO of Education Support Services they he provides all of the school psychology evaluation reports and all the Speech Pathology and speech therapy um I'm a subcontractor with him I'm education consultant advoc ored education Consulting advocacy team my job is to come in and help with compliance making sure that the the paperwork is in compliance with the law in order to ensure the students are getting um the services that they require based on their disabilities so it's we we're team effort and that's who I am thank you for your service absolutely my pleasure thank you guys very much I appreciate it Mr any other questions um Dr sholz and I have been meeting with Mr

Strada andc and Mr delara on a regular bi-weekly basis just to have us all be more informed during the whole special education review um we're going to have the State Department of Education coming by in a few months he has experience with with that part also and so this has been very uh very productive implementing best practices as far as the software um I have experience working with EIP Pro also in the gas Unified School District is very efficient you can monitor and adjust you get updates and so this is a very uh it's a much more efficient best practice system versus the one that we have okay anybody on the board have further questions thank you very thank you sir being said the administration and staff are recommending moving from CE to EIP Pro

for all the special education department okay may I have a motion on that I will make a motion I'll second it I hi Mr Mr I pass by okay next item on the agenda is the 2223 performance payout Mr Hopkins members of the board 2223 performance feay data has been calculated by the leadership team the board is being asked to review an award the attached proposition 301 funds to qualified teachers from the 2223 school year recommend the approval of the payment of these 301 funds to the teachers as listed okay I'll change it up and make the motion this time you have a second I will second Mr hi hi Rodriguez hi Mr Mr I pass okay next up is the approval of the 2324 performance plan Mr Hopkins members of the board the attached

0462324 301 performance plan was approved with 28 certified teachers voting in favor and three abstaining The Proposal gared a 90.3% approval rate all teachers who voted vot voted yes I recommend the approval of the attached 2324 performance plan as approved by teachers okay and may I have a motion on that I'll make the motion I'll second it I I I Mr Mr hi okay next item is the second reading of the AO Unified School District governing board policy adoption okay Mr Hopkins okay Mr Hopkins members of the board uh before the second reading just like we did in uh times before but we'll refer back to what was reviewed uh at the October 9th study session for the first review so pretty much just going over the the highlights here um want to remind everyone

her uh for Dr Paul Tai the Arizona School administrators executive director recommended as I shared with all the board on Monday no to policy advisory number 753 for reason stated in his email that I shared with you Monday okay and I have a motion on I'll make the motion I'll second it hi Mr hi Mr hi can I ver vote what I have here is I recommend the approval of the attached a US board policies upon second reading with the exception of policy number 753 to not approve policy number yes you okay with that yeah Mr okay next item up of business is the resolution to the Arizona School Board Association okay Mr Hopkins members of the board it was recently reported that the newly appointed executive director of asba engaged in the falsification of

his educational credentials which represents a serious breach of trust and violation of ethical standards inherent to his position school districts in Pima County and around the state have resolved to send a joint statement to the asba governing board the joint resolution is attached you have received this information this is the board's decision okay I have a motion on that I will make the motion I'll second it I I hi Mr hi Mr I okay next our discussion items first one being the Arizona School Board Association policy Services Mr Hopkins members of the board our board member requested a discussion on asba and looking into terminating their services there's no board action necessary at this time this is a discussion item for report you also have I believe in your attachment section we just received this

uh Miss Valen shared this with me uh this afternoon and we shared this with you to have in your attachment regarding um it's on the business resolution one oh it is okay yeah regarding um just what other past presidents of asba as far as they're concerned um with the process of what we talked about so uh um this is a discussion item for for for the board okay tell Eric to take it away Eric believe you were the one that requested the discussion on this yes thank you Mr Hopkins um after I seeing that we as individual school districts are asked to pass a resolution to basically compel the asba goting board to take action on their hire this individual they hire to fail to v um I feel that there is no reason that

we need to be associated with the asba any further I think it's absolutely ridiculous that a decision that they should have clearly made themselves to rectify should not have been put on us or any other school district in the state of Arizona I feel that this affects their integrity and I do not feel that the yo Unified School District should be affiliated with the asba anymore okay thank you do we know why the board of directors likeed to go ahead and hire we heard that oh Mr Hopkins Mr gy that is something that only they would know as far as why they selected a this person for the resigned because so the president of the board resigned um I'm sorry how can I this he did resign MH okay after being told by the lawyer

for asba that they were in breach um with they were he was told that um it violated fiary duties under Arizona law and opened it up to liability the board ended up voting um I think passed by one vote to hire him at which point um the president had resigned M um the new president who came aboard put out a statement to the rest of the board saying um our shared Journey demands that we move forward together and those who feel Divergent from this path are respectfully invited to resign from their positions immediately at which I think two more board members did resign after that how big a board is it I was looking at the website it's awfully small no bigger than ours I mean just their main board executive board members I'd have

to Mr Mr have to find out the exact number find that out to me the most shocking thing about this is that the former president actually had a report drawn up that that showed that the person didn't have the credentials they want and that the board decided to not review that report and approved him anyways that being said and I understand um understand Eric's frustration and I'm frustrated with asba about this as well that being said I also want to draw into Focus the fact that we have over the years received a lot of benefit from association with asba that's who puts on the law conferences for us that's who's provided training for us that's who did the search that brought us Dr soltero so I I would like to see both the executive director

and the current president removed from aspa of course that's not up to me but I think it I do think it could be a detriment to the to the AO Unified School District to sever that connection with asba based on other services that they provide that really have nothing to do with who is in those two top positions with us and I agree there an alternative to them U Mr Hopkins Mr um Mr Guffy uh I do have give me a minute I did speak to Mr Hufford about the this situation and he just provided me the following information as far as what we're doing now what you're doing now as a board discussing getting it started with a discussion um asba does have policy Services the trust has policy Services um an option some

asba some districts are members but use other policy Services um so there's the trust also that provides policy Services um and also to keep an eye Miss Valenzuela and I on the uh the executive director situation he's also aware of that situation as well so that's some of the information I have to share with you so of these other agencies that provide policy services do they have the same history and reach that asba does within the state like would they have is there capability to give that training on par with ASAS or or above I would need to research that more Mr hop ASA Prov provid those Services the trust provide services and Arizona School administrators is also providing services so there's different organizations that provide some of the same Services since this happened okay

so this is a this is getting more and more uh getting more and more attention M around the state from all districts across the state and other organizations like the ones I just mentioned yes so much your advice well the best thing I can think of is just kind of like what you're doing right now talking about it then you guys decide uh how you want to move forward and um we go from there and just uh we can research the services provided but um I think this is a good step in the right direction what you're doing now just trying to find out more information and research more that F that F tenous he been over here too pay these folks pardon we pay these folks they we do we do uh we do

pay for their services we can look into that as far as the exact amount that are paid for all the different Services we can provide that information sure and like I said I yeah I'm kind of outraged that they had a report just decided not to look at it that would be to me in hiring either one of you if another board member came and said wait he never actually went to school and me saying no we're disregarding that we're just going to vote on what and like I said I think I think both the president and the executive director both need to need to step down from their positions because they didn't do their one of them lied the other one didn't do their due diligence to catch that even when it was pretty

much handed to them so and I think and I'm sorry but I think also with us going along with um I guess combining forces with other districts and putting pressure on them to you know take action is probably the first step that we need yes and I do agree with Eric that it it shouldn't take that to get them to do this but that apparently is what it's going to take and hopefully they can write their ship after realizing that there are numerous districts that are very disappointed in in that action on their part just a reminder um that t School districted 5S 5 Bale 5 m 5 5 Z all the the other districts that have voted to approve this resolution and spend a unanimous vote okay and just to clarify also our relationship

with our lawyer has nothing to do with our relationship with asra Okay so I know we I know we like having Mr Hufford okay is there any more discussion on that put my yeah I have another thing to say if that's right yes yes I understand we we all have received some good services from the aspa prior but for me that just that doesn't matter when they're going to have this type of representation and decision making at their board level I'm not H I'm not happy with it I don't agree with it regardless of the services they provided before this is right now this is a straight up reflection of their ideals their values and how basically they're representing all of us elected governing board members of our respective districts that does not sit right

with me so I personally in my opinion I would like to sever our relationship with them regardless just due to this and that's all I'm gonna say on that okay thank you very much okay there's no more discussion on that the next item is the quarterly assessment 20% to 10% yes Mr Hopkins members of the board um I will uh there's a reporting questions answered by Dr shabos Miss Aran and Mr Casey um there is no board action necessary this is for discussion purposes but um they will provide more context uh Dr shab M and Mr Casey on this uh situation provide an update Dr SCH Mr President members of the board first um I made a Ry Mistake by not communicating um well enough I I believe um what the quarterly assessment is what

what quarterly benchmarks are why we chose 20% as a site um it was mentioned prior but it wasn't but but again I'm No rookie that's what's embarrassing about it but as a working State should have got more information out there to everyone back step just a little bit so so we belong to Beyond textbooks beond textbooks one of the biggest um one of the advantages that we that we H have with Beyond textbooks and that we use is that they have a calendar that that tells us when to teach the essential standards so we all know about state standards and all of our students are tested on those state standards and at the end of the towards the end of the year we have a state assessment on State Standards there's a million State Standards

so what theond texbooks has has done in years of work has broken down the essential standards what do the students really need to know the most important things and they put it on a calendar based on our school calendar and they do it for all the districts depending on what their calendar looks like so we our teachers post those standards you'll see it in every room you go in or if it's running on the on the um screen they'll be posted on there they talk to the students about what those standards look like and then they teach to those standards so these are the essential standards here's what you have to know so come at the end of nine weeks it's called a quarterly Benchmark we're going to give you an assessment on what you're

supposed to know and what we're going to find out is do you know it do you need ring because we'll do that during intercession and then you'll have a chance to retake that assessment um or is there enrichment involved you're already passed that now we need to look at some scheduling maybe and what enrichment opportunities we can do for you so we give the so so we chose the 20% um 10 it was 10% last year and and and yes there were there were some concerns concerned parents and community members then as well um and I did have some discussions with some of those parents and um what what they found out through the process was yeah there's going to be a one or two day hit if your child doesn't do well on those

standards that just and not do well it's it's if they don't know the standards they have to know so so there could be a hit the next time a grade goes in this because it Blends in with the semester grade the next time a grade goes in which could be the next day um that's totally going to change again so you could drop here the next day a score goes in and it brings it up and and and that'll happen again until there's another assessment so we just want to be able to make it important for the students because as you know what's what's a essed needs to count for something if not it just doesn't mean anything one of our one of our lovely parents that uh that I had a great relationship with

you know she made a comment the other night I wish we could go back the way things used to be well principales really wish that because we didn't have letter grades and it was just as long as parents liked you and like the teacher everything was wonderful but um that changed a long time ago and we we're changing with the times and you know we're following best practices with many with many of the a districts and that's what we're trying to do and a schools that that we've been at or that we see and best practices is to um assess those assess those standards hold the child accountable and then and then retach him let him retake it and see that growth um and that's and that's what we're trying to do so it's not

you know as as a site we're not trying to say we're going to be at prep school and this is going to we're not doing anything outlandish like that we're just trying we but yeah we are trying to increase um the rigor and the knowledge of the students on on what they're supposed to know and and let them know about it the the only one of the big positives about having this discussion is is I don't think any school really talks about academics enough and this is bringing us together as a community and as a board and um and one thing I I wanted to say too is this isn't a the board the site um vers parents and I love when parents have concerns and bring it up because they bring some new insight

and and make us relook at some things and then we can have the discussion we have to remember we're all one big family or one little family looking at our school and so we're trying to you know I think everything we do is with what's best for the students academic wise I mean that's just kind of the way I've I've been principled um and those were the first questions you ask how is this going to improve academic achievement which which means for each child how is that going to increase their academic growth and so and so that was why the decision was made um we did have some concerned parents and there was quite and there were there were some grades that really dropped I moved it back down to 10% the leadership team all

together talked about it we moved it back down to 10% not everybody was happy with that on the leadership team some wanted to make it 15 some wanted to make it 12 I moved it to 10 because that's what it was last year um and in in doing that uh by the time I check the grades the next two days most of the kids had already changed and and gone up because of those assessments grades going in it wasn't meant to be a Blindside to to anybody you know to catch anyone off guard but it is but it did wake some people up and when I and and not and I'm not talking about certain parents I'm talking about a lot of kids like this is going to count yeah the the important things that

you're supposed to learn they are going to count we're going to assess it and it's going to count but but we're given an opportunity I have to go to intercession no you don't have to do any of that we're given that opportunity you get a sandwich every day at that intercession and we're going to build you back up to retach those standards and then you're going to get a retest on it and so and and and you're going to feel good about yourself and you'll do better at the end of the year on our state assessment um if you don't do that we have other opportunities before school during lunch and after school tutoring we're going to start providing after after the break and and once you're at a point to where the the teacher

or the tutor says you know I think you're ready for this they retake that test and total and the grade totally changes I do want to make it clear as well that um I think there was a misconception that that we changed it back to 10% because there were students ineligible actually very few students became ineligible the ones that became ineligible many of them were going to be ineligible not because of this test but because of another class let's say US History you mean eligibility for sports eligibility for sports yeah um and I know one of the parents that spoke um his children weren't even involved their children we're involved in the eligibility part of it so it's not just about the sports um I'm going to have Miss Mercy Mr Casey fill in my

fill in the blanks uh if I feel passionate about it or I sound that way it's because I want what's best for our kids not because I'm defending this move if the whole Community said let's not do grades at all then we don't do grades the whole Community says let's just grade on standards and you've heard about schools that do the standards report cards it's just based on how you do on the standards so we don't have to have any of these other grades it would just be what you got on that that's going to be your grade and there's some schools that don't do this there's some that do um again I just kind of follow best practices and and what I see some of the really good schools doing and some that are

involved with us with BT and I kind of went with that and when I say I it's not it's we the leadership team went with that but um but again I I I I really do enjoy the fact that we're talking academics and that I'm able to share this and if I had to do it again hindsight you know I would have send a letter out explaining here's what it's going to look like here's what could happen your child could have an A get a zero on this and end up with a SE that could that could happen for a day or two until your new grades come in that could happen but um if they have an A and they got a zero on that there's that we have bigger problems but um I'm

G to pass it over now to uh Mr Casey or Miss Mercy which everyone wants to fill in kind of the gaps that I left and thank you for let speak that's a question one of the presentations you gave us was it on this testing or or not not yet we just finished this last week it's a quad basically yeah and I think I think with these new test I mean with anything new you're going to have these growing pains right so it's nice that we're able to experience them now and get them ironed out so that way kids are ready at the end of the year to take these tests they're already familiar with it and we'll see better school at the end of the year but we've seen over the years whenever they

change the state assessment everybody's score drops next year then you get used to that new assessment tool then they change again it's unfamiliar so I think these Benchmark testings that they're taking now gets the kids more familiar with what the um format is going to be and they're they're going to be comfortable with it at the end of the year when it's time to take those end of the year assessments so honorable members of the board um what I want to say couple of things one we have been using a different assessment platform for n or 10 years and we switched it to Performance matters for this one main reason it aligns with the Beyond textbook and we have the ability to access frequently and also there some kind of end of the quarter exam

which we call the Benchmark so students are part a standard for sometimes for week um sometimes it takes two weeks at the end of that standard there is a formative assessment five question assessment to see if the students really understood if they really got it and if they don't fully get an understanding of that standard teachers will provide assistance sometimes after school hours or um during the inter session or other locations to make sure that they catch up and they Master the stand this will really help them to be ready prepared for the next lesson and also for the next grade level and when they go from high school to college they will be ready for to take the on grade level the actual credit earning courses without going into remedial classes and so this

way our students are College and Career ready by the time they graduate so that is our goal that is our vision for students to be really prepared for college and carer whatever path they choose choose to so even for students in middle school or Elementary they're getting ready prepared for the next grade level and next course in high school when we do this another part this is a little bit of theory there is something called a forget Cur of forgetting so something that you learn today by the time tomorrow you may remember like 80% of that and by the weekend it is going to go down to say 40 or 30% of that if you don't use that or recall that so the same way teachers taught something during the first week of August by

the time October they may have forgotten some of that but this gives a final examp for the first quarter gives them the opportunity to revise go to review go through those standards again and bring it back bring back the memory to another 80% so that by the end of the year it is more likely to retain in their brains so this is like the theoretical part of it having a quarterly exam is really helpful for them to remember that on longer term that is going to help us as a school and help the student to remember keep those skills very active and freshing their memories um we did communicate about the great part of it uh to the parents that we are changing switching from this assessment to a new assessment in August when we

had the parent uh evening parent meets for the high school we did communicate that but it may not have been very specific or clear enough and it was like the fting back and really didn't do a good job in reminding parents and students about that the third part of it is yes students um we want students to go through that process of learning and earning the grades based on the standards they have mastered so we do give them the opportunity to go back and learn those stands again and take the test again that was one of my reasons to say let's go with the 20% and that way there will be more encouraged to go back through that process and learn and master it and come back take the test again to earn the score

back and it was not my intention to like make some students ineligible when I suggested this idea to make it 20% to increase from the 10% that we had before to 20 but the goal was to make students understand that this is important and they have to review before the test and is going to help them um do better on the test and I hope by the next test students will understand that important and they will do that review process teachers have been helping students to go through uh the prior standards and review for the test but students will do their part too by reviewing it before the T and that's all I have thank you thank you is there a plan to um take it back up to 20% % in the future for

me yes this is my my P but can I backck real quick starting from February 2023 in February 2023 um C good evening everyone in February 2023 the leadership team together with a few teachers um attended the PLC professional Learning Community training to facilitated the r be partner and I know I remembered it was during that time that we realized that it's so important to change from maap performance matters because map as what Mr Casey has mentioned um is adaptive assessment we had this for more than 10 years and it's not it's not helping us like when we do PLC we analyze our data it's so difficult to analyze the data when what we're teaching is not what we're assessing so it was then that we changed we decided to change and from then like

we included uh we included the performance matter um mentioned it to the teachers in the new uh new teachers induction in every training we me I mentioned it several times with them I mentioned this to the kids the families that you know I talk with and we will continue to do that why um as a parent parent I've seen my kids you know graduated here I've seen some one of my kids could not I should say that far and going to community college or um university because i' I've been telling these kids now that you know when you go to college when you apply for college when you're accepted you actually have to take a placement test and you take this placement test in math and reading um they have to see if you're ready

for a college course if not then they're going to give you remedial class like with Mr Cas has mentioned we want you to graduate ready for this college courses and this is the only way we're do I'm passionately saying this because these are best practices um in BT we a day follow they answer brick to Force four questions one what do we teach we teach essential standards based from based from me essential standards because this is not all the standards I'm a math teacher I've taught algebra yes when when my when my kids um took the the a of marit 60 something per of them asked but as a teacher I had to teach them everything and it was overwhelming when I teach my when I taught my you know geometry my son did not

like me because I had to give them everything this essential standards only given how many essential standards for first quarter for four or five yeah usually it is like a for different grade levels between usually between five to seven Anda it is three to five standards what I have seen so not a lot so if we're so focused on these standards and our kids really listen to our teachers then for the quarter exam we say Benchmark exam but it's actually a quarter exam because these are these are questions that came from the standards that were taught and after every standard they're given the common formative questions right assessment of five questions these formative questions are actually kind of the same questions that will come up in this Benchmark assessment so it's not a surprise but

then you know my the teachers would say some of these kids like I feel feel like they're they're not with me like this kid would be talking so you know when I see them and I see them in the hallway come here what are we talking we have to pay attention me as a math teacher I know for one thing if you're absent there or you're not paying attention for the day you'll be lost you'll be lost so when when um when um a quarter is over the teacher will not have a time to go back for that because they have to move on to the new standards if we don't make our kids responsible or like have making them you know decide that oh I need to go to this extra support so I

will get this that way for juniors for example when when I will take my ACT I'm actually ready when I will go to senior year I'll take my freeeup I'm ready because the moment I miss a standard or standards it will be it will be difficult but if we raise the bar it's going to send the message to the kids that I want to do better and I've talked to several kids already about like you know it's okay to go back then it's fine as long like for now as long as I'm hearing I get it I value the the lessons now I'm paying attention I'm good so hearing that from the kids is really very good but but again it will be a community decision but you know that's practices we have to do

something when we take this assessment we do something about it and I know we mentioned about intercession we mentioned about after school tutorials this is the only thing we can do for high school for Middle School we have an extra they can have a double dose of math or double dose of ela that's that's embedded their schedule in the elementary we also have embedded this in their schedule it is only in high school that we don't have except for the after school before school during lunch uh tutorial for the intercession so I have comments first thing is I have nothing but respect for the three of you for Bo as the federal I never found you be mean-spirited any of you even though I've seen you with a reason to be mean-spirited right but I've

never seen you that way you're always a sweetheart all the time so I don't think you would ever do anything to intentionally hurt the kids second thing is over the years I've heard so many times from parents other people don't send your kids to a school because they don't get an education right teach them at home send them to another school we've had prominent people in the community have sent their kids to other places rather than keep them in in a school so now we're saying hey we'd like to raise that bar up a little bit so that our kids are competitive right whether they are stupid paramedics or their CEOs right they they they are competitive if the the only only thing I could see where where you might have made a little different

feel is if You' said to kids hey if you don't do well in these tests you're going to go to intercession they might have been a little more motivated you know about about doing well on the test because they might have but if they don't go to intercession they don't go to tutoring what's the result of that I mean what's the consequence of it so so I'll hold on Ronnie I'll talk you right there so my kids came home saying my teachers are telling me it's 20% of the grade and if we fail it we have to go to intercession if we don't go to intercession then we are not allowed to do Sports which personally I'm not okay with that because our kids I believe the principal would ever do that the K the

teachers did tell all of my kids well all my girls at least um the kids work hard as it is to be do any sports that they do and then for them to say what then at that they were like what's the point why are we even having a fall break if we just have to go to school um I can interject because it sounds from what you were saying that that was part of a miscommunication there being dropped from you know because they have that chance to bring it back up and not be Dro from the SP if I would sent a that you know what I'm saying whether whatever the teacher said what whatever a child interpreted as how at least you would have got okay I see this that's there's nothing about

what you're saying right now so and then you could just call come see me times the gra here's what's really happening but but I'm not yeah I believe that it's interpreted wrong and you say something probably some teachers stated it that way and may been some kind of you know my scare tactic but to raise the feathers a little bit and get get them like well think this really ser I said kids did have prev knowledge my my kid knew that they're going to be testing so yeah yeah so yeah so how are we going to deal with the kids that don't test well like kids that have anxiety from testing how how how are we going to deal with that it sounds like if there's formative assessments after a standard they're already going to

have the practice to be able to do that and as long as they focus on those formative assessments after every standard they're going to be ready for that Benchmark because it's going to be the same format it's the same question and if kids can work with the teachers on that with their peers on that at home with that and practice it I think by the time they're ready for this the benchmark test it's going to be a piece of cake no no worries I've got this I've seen it before I'm amiliar with it and then the anxiety level goes down I agree with what you're saying some people never in their whole lives test well time they they they always test terrible and and in EMS the way they address that is part of the

The Paramedic program is to teach people how to take test right to teach people how to take tests so they go in with the best skills which reduces anxiety right absolutely yeah but there's always going to be kids that just don't or people not just kids people that just don't test and I I don't think anybody has an answer for that you know because that's what we're doing right now I mean we have interm testing next week and all we're doing this week is reviewing uh test taking strategies um you know if you're in a bind and you quite don't know what to do how can you approach this problem giving kids the skill set and the tools to be able to go in and take these tests it reduces that anxiety level for them

I know from having worked in GED programs for so long where the whole thing is based on passing five standardized tests that there is a lot of testing anxiety and it doesn't really have to do with if the student knows the information or not it's that they know it's a test now and they get nervous about it so I would hope that kind like what I do in the GED program when I know I have a student who has that is kind of give them strategies that aren't even academic with the strategies to help calm that anxiety yeah um you know sometimes it's as simple as just okay just focus on your breathing control that for a bit but I've had GED students who I really wished I that it was legal for me to

give them a GED test and just tell them it's a worksheet because they could knock it out of the park but once they know it counts as the test it's like I always refer to it as like their brain's like a sponge but then sometimes you get too much pressure and all the information comes out of it so my my hope would be that just individual teachers across the board could also be working on how to work with students on reducing their own testing anxiety because it's it's going to be important if they go on to college or anywhere else when they know that they're being tested on something just to have skills to reduce that anxiety and definitely a big part of that is confidence in what they know but there is another part

of it that's that's not about that it's about this fly I'm the but you know so I think I think it's in my experience it's kind of a two-pronged approach to make sure they know the information but also to make sure that they know that sometimes they're stressing themselves out over I've seen so many times grading something and I'm like well you marked it right the first time and then you rethought it and you marked it wrong and it becomes a a confidence thing and I know one of the most surprising things I say to my GED students when they're going to take the actual test they'll say wish me luck I said no and they kind of startled I'm like you don't you don't need luck you know what you're doing you just need

to show them it why likes you but you know I think um I think both of those are important to just kind of give them some strategies for reducing that anxiety um as well as making sure that academically they're prepared for it right but I mean even with your students right when you're teaching and you have a formative assessment you let them know try your best and it's okay if you don't know all the answers because then that lets me know what I need to teach you what I need to retach you what I need to focus on with you so I think if the teachers are able to convey that message to the child it's okay you don't know anything or any everything and the things you don't know I'm going to be able

to teach that to you so it kind of like okay I'll do what I know how to do and then with that that drives our instruction right this is what we have to the results don't be afraid it's okay if you don't do well it's okay but we need ask for the support they need to want to get it like I talked to a student earlier like you know he wants to sign up for for the Toral and I asked him so what was your score he said it's so bad it's exp that's not that bad you only are 20 points away from getting a pie of 60 and 60 makes it a green and that's actually now like way better really yeah so I think it's just you know some strategies that you need

like keywords that you need to to remember here so so those things like it's okay it's okay not to to do well at first but it's not the end of the you know it's not the end of everything there's a second chance it's just that it's not also okay to just give the second chance without the support this yeah that's not best practice yeah and I think if that's communicated to them too that also could have a natural effect of reducing some of that anxiety where they're like okay if I don't do well I still have a chance to make it up and sounds like within a few days to make it up and and bring the grade right back up to where it was yeah I want to finish it with myself saying I

would much rather as a board member have the people that are teaching our kids want to set the standard higher right set the standard higher and and have the kids reach that standard then I would just stay the status quo because we know that's not working right well to speak to m eron's point too about you know when they go if they go to college they are going to be given assessment test if they have to take a remedial class they have to pay for it and it's not college credit class so it doesn't go towards their degree it becomes extra classes they're having to take I've I've certainly seen that with GED students as well over the years Mr Hopkins in closing I've been very quiet to the last 20 minutes to um but

but sometimes when we listen we learn a lot and what I heard was formative assessment every standard just so everyone knows and all those listening throughout our AO Unified School District Community we made the big turnaround from February to April of last year when we started incorporating formative assessment right like a five five question test assessment and especially at the middle school level the whole Middle School teachers here in the high school I remember our high school math and science teacher did the formative assessment and we would meet every Thursday during that two-month period but also the elementary school teachers this was after receiving a Beyond textbooks professional development uh from Mr Edwards and Mr Justin they had shared with us the formative assessment piece it's really going to help you it was hard for

all of us to to want to make that change but but we did it with the teachers and and um Elementary School and one step further they did the formative assessment and the raching en Rich part so I I share that with you just because we went from 46 to 62 in high school that's four points from a b when our score was a d based on last year's cut score we're still waiting this year for the official scores I'm just going by last year's cut scores we went from 64 to 77 at ka8 about six and a half points from an A this does work it is changed you know like West Brown talks about it it's all of us you know parents staff family students we're stretching but in the second semester this

is going to be we're going to be used to this but the results show that it does work um and I just I'm just listening to all the comments from everyone and and uh I had a prepared statement here to read but I'm just going to talk to you from the heart just listening to you the explanation they gave we talked yesterday for about an hour right I like oh wow what she said wow I didn't know that you hear it then you forget like he says you have the theory where you hear it then you forget his comment his coming today there comments again and I just kept thinking to myself you I'm a parent right and I thought what they said can be shared with any parent anytime mhm all the parent has

to do you know is got a question come and see them I mean I'm just thinking as as a parent now you know um because the explanation she gave that he gave and he gave and that you guys are giving I I mean parents come and talk to them first thing you know I'm not going to recite to you what page from the book what manual how we should follow this this and that this Common Sense everyday Common Sense any parent that has any questions on any issue here in our district as it as it is you this for an example the quarterly assessment they would just come and talk to them talk to all three of them I learned from them yesterday what they said and then just today listening to them right now

I learned even more my point is for any parent here that we have on our campus and throughout the community any question that they have please come come to us first and we'll help you and if we can't if we don't know the answer we'll find it look at how look at how they found out the answer we'll collaborate with BT with Veil we'll collaborate with other superintend we have an excellent consultant now Mr stra he's helping us collaborate the special ed Department we'll go to the technology department we'll go to our district office our new Finance team we'll go to our you know you made mention earlier about our our our lawyer he's one of the best educational lawyers in the state maybe the best we'll find an answer but but all that I

can say just from listening to everyone for the last half an hour is any parents or anyone in the community even if you're not a parent have any questions come and see us and we we'll we we'll figure it out you know this is great dialogue I love that we're talking about how can we become an a think about that that's that's the undercurrent here how can we become an a district we're not talking about nothing else we've talked a lot about like what you said Mr Guffy over the last few months facilities stadiums everything but we're talking about the last half an hour about academics and I love that and how we become how we can become an a district I think it's great that's the whole thing why we connected and partner with

the Bale Unified School District and BT every school that super conference is an a school and I bet they started with conversations like the we're having tonight so that makes me feel real good and it should make all of you guys feel good too that we really want to work on just having not one of the best districts but the best District in Arizona this is a conversation that I think is a blueprint for reaching that goal and and and thank you that's all I this okay any further discussion on that okay then our next agenda item is the invitation to add possible new agenda items future meetings anybody have one at this time no is Eric still on the phone no okay I wasn't sure I thought he might have one but there's certainly

time before the next meeting to add one so okay now I will then I will ask for a motion to adjourn will make the motion I'm GNA wait and see second that's like waiting for you hi hi hkin hi meting insurance at 7:40 the long longest meeting that's the longest meeting we've had since you joined the board we've had we've had three hours January in my sister's District their meetings starts at 5:30 they oftentimes go past 2: in the morning no way and their board should not be in office and they should have been removed multiple times for open meeting violation they literally without announcing it had an executive session where they fired their superintendent and lawyer and then hired a new lawyer with no education background without posting that they were having an executive

session about that was
