for what you've one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice yes mr president uh honorable board members um i'm gonna uh ask for dr chabot smith to talk a little bit about uh our job tutoring an opportunity to begin tutoring uh early in august for our native american students and so i'm going to ask if uh dr both first can say a few words and then miss smith also uh give us her her insight as well thank you so that available take place that year didn't also take place um before it did take place last year a lot of the activities that they were able to do we had we held meetings we somewhere in person and uh some were virtual um one concern that came up at the meetings is that when jwm

tutoring did ever take place it was always later in the year so at our last meeting at the end of last year we well we all agree they continuously talked about the more tutoring and um and their the funds just keep growing because they're not being used and they do carry and they much much of it carries over i think all that smith can tell is that um but we had quite a quite a bit of funds in there and so that wasn't the question so we had said we we had set aside money at the end of last year to be able to start tutoring right away this year and we weren't sure how that was going to work with our big number of turnover and that sort of thing with our teachers so

we weren't really sure about it also mr casey and i felt that um i'll speak for you mr casey i i know at least on my behalf we felt we weren't able to give of ourselves to to the program that it was something that kind of we took over because there was a need for someone to take it over it wasn't that there was a lack of passion from us it was just uh time and um and what you cut out to take to take place for the requirements that are that this federal and state have for you to do these grants so um we seeked out assistance in that and mr sane doug shane one of our new teachers said that he would be the director and his wife is also our art teacher

and so he always tells me whatever he does really means they are going to do and uh they've been in schools in the past and reservations they've been to youth time schools they've been at in the past had thriving organizations without jum police organizations and groups helping out our indigenous families and students so he had a lot of neat ideas he volunteered for that there was no one else to really interview he wanted to do it so he's taking that over he's already met i i don't have the exact dates and times and what all he's done but i know that he's met with some of the leadership uh parents and community members that we have for joan and ones that work in their office over there he's been he's met with them he came

up with the dates wanted to get tutoring started right away so we asked for teachers that wanted to partake in that and we got their names and we bring that to you this evening um to to get that started he he was he wasn't that well read up on all the requirements for joan but mr casey and i did meet with him and we kind of went over hey here's what you're supposed to do here's what we did here's what we were supposed to do and some of those things didn't match um so kind of having somebody else and another set of eyes were like yeah we needed to have that one thing we didn't do i'll say i didn't do you should have a high school student on the committee on the john committee

and we failed to do that i don't think i ever even read that until we were going over the requirements with him i was like oh we need to have that there's just so many but so i think it's going to come together and be bigger and better and hopefully we'll be able to do some of the activities that they've done in the past the sales rodeo was canceled last year maybe that'll come back around they've had activities around the holidays here in december which they did in the last two years but they told me about them and how great they were so so there are people willing to uh willing to help i do know that mr sane already has reached out and talked to one of the heads of the community college on

the on the reservation and they're actually coming out to do something he said with him and just this was in passing he was telling me these things a couple days ago so um that's where we are the financial side of it mr smith can smith you want to share with us any insight sure um i'll be happy to share the same uh discussions that i have there are allowable cause of the purpose of the brand too but it sounds like you started starting down the right path by meeting with the needs of the group and establishing their needs because the funding we have we've only applied for so much but right now we're approved for up to 210 hours of tutoring for both high school and elementary we can amend that for more or adjust

for once we determine the need we can approach a school supplies backpack for each food that's needed and we can use the other supplies for any kind of recognition or awards or graduation as long as we're addressing the neighborhood american needs we can get the questions for it so i'm excited because i have a first in place and maybe i should be with you and share what i know uh because there are even more funds available so the fact that you're approving these tutors now is excellent we're right at the beginning of the year we're not going to be doing this four months inwards we're already behind so i appreciate that guys that this wagon ended in the right so we have money for their salary there's their benefits and the supplies that they need

for so this is a program that's very dear to me i really feel like we kind of let the native american kids down and on them um the do you know offhand where the tribe provides any social workers to work with kids work with families to specifically get them enrolled in school because i know we have native american families a novel that i technically enrolled at t.o i didn't go to class one time last year and um and when i spoke with the mom she seemed hesitant to enroll the kids here and and i was explaining to her that you know she can't go over here without the kids go to school again and so there's at least two households full of kids that that are not attending school anywhere they're and so they're just

not going to school so i'm just wondering if the tribe provided social workers to come in and walk these people through the enrollment process in our school system and get them enrolled because we can't teach anybody we can't get into the school right and so um and you have any idea how many native american kids we have in the school system i know it's over 100 mr casey do you remember the exact number of those last year 74 was the number of students with that five or six forms documented as native american students but those were declared as native american was like a hundred and two or hundred and three somewhere around that as far as the social workers are doing on them okay i do i do have one comment and that is january

just does not allow success for mental health or social and emotional learning i do not know why but it is specifically or i was just hoping that if the tribe provided social workers that they could assist these families in enrolling in the school system and yeah they can't but we can't spend our jail money on that from this grant right i thought this was all part of it thank you so much my understanding is that all the funds that are still implemented are spent have to be actually approved by the indian education committee has that happened have they approved mr sane as the j1 coordinator because we've had questions about this in the past from members of the native american community about funds possibly being disbursed without their uh approval so that would be my

question has has the committee approved this and not that i know of um i wouldn't think so you didn't have a meeting my understanding of how the jail funds work is that yes there's only certain things that we can we can use the funds for and if the disbursement of the funds of the disbursement the approval of what we use them for has to go through the committee but they actually have to approve the funds so we improve the funds for tutoring at the end of last school school year with the committee at the committee yeah when i said we did not reward yeah with the committee which they've been asking for all year and so so we said well we'll set these monies aside and that was approved you know virtually that one of

the virtually some of the regulars that have always been on their committee were there but mr sandman now i spoke with resultant sandalwood which is on the committee um committee she says she will be here wednesday at the meeting so if we have any questions we might be able to actually direct them to her then it would be too late too for us to approve this if they haven't already approved it is that in fact excited to see it sure sure well it's a great guy it gives a great step in the right direction it was just a matter of uh getting everything taken care of sure so um the laura is that is that um are you saying verse in this is that your understanding that that the use of funds needs to be

covered by the indian education committee the family and the community involved in the whole process as a liaison for this program so don't you're asking me i'm just asking about the legal requirements um that i know there's a document that lists the types of things that are eligible um but i think also there is a requirement that the committee approve the use of the specific uses of the funds so for hiring a person did you go through that well when we apply for the grant bank and say what is for um and so what comes first apart from yours i'm not sure but mr shane will have to meet with the with the group so that they can put forth ideas but but i'll be happy to work with him in any way that we

can and the grant is proved so i'm sure that the nightclubs are answered i think where the committee came from was because when mrs clover retired and i don't know when she retired for a long time we didn't have a j-1 coordinator there's nobody planning for it nobody wanted to do it and we're pushing openly i i'm gonna make this really quick um and then so we had a committee of parents that became the j-o-m committee that made decisions because there wasn't a staff member on staff that did it so then we got another job coordinator they worked together with the j1 committee and the coordinator so i don't think it's something in the actual grant that says that you have to get the committee's permission i think that's just the way it evolved with

like how we had a committee for the longest time didn't have a coordinator so the committee and the coordinator always work together but i don't think it says it in the grant because we have the jon which is state and then we have title six which is federal so i seriously thought that it says anywhere in each of the grants that you have to get approval of the parent committee um so i think it was just that's just an awful thing was because we didn't have a coordinator for the longest time so the parent committee became the de facto coordinator and then once we got a coordinator again i think that's where it came from i could be totally wrong but i think that's where the you know getting the committee's approval came from so

oh so my understanding is that community has to exist it's part of the program but could we get more definitive information information on that because i just because this questions have been raised by constituents who are part of our native american community and i want to make sure we're doing this right for them absolutely okay thank you sure the next uh informational item is approval increase for the part-time employee yes mr president um this is something uh uh we uh it is very critical uh mr russell plays a a very important role um and just a keynote here i wanted to make sure to uh to read out loud that uh mr russell will have no benefit increase as he works less than 20 hours per week um it goes along the lines of we

have to really the people that we do have we have to really make their beer for the people or quite frankly what i've learned and what i've been what's been shared with me from dr shabolds and angelina and and our and our finance and business staff is that we could lose them and so uh mr russell does uh play a critical role he's the only other awful unified school district transportation driver he also works on security cameras field maintenance check security and safety for the campus doors locked and working any other issues that may arise helps the setup for games when needed general maintenance and repairs around campus is needed so uh um long story short that is is my recommendation the approval of a two dollar pay increase for mr russell so that he

stays with us yes mr president um and talking and i've talked with several of you over the last week uh this once again goes back to just keeping the people that we have and just uh learning i'm learning very quickly that uh we all wear four or five hats and so uh um miss francisca lopez has stepped up to the plate uh dr chabots did talk with her and so uh long story short i am recommending the approval of the reassignment of francisca lopez as a culinary arts teacher she has a set up real nice she's excited at the open house she was really just you could see it and she wants to be here i don't know how else to say that you know uh mr president mr guthrie was done for mr president

mrs roberson she wants to be here we're not trying to say hey okay though can you call us back or call us back now we're gonna email you okay we haven't heard from you uh she wants to be here and when our kids can see somebody who wants to be here and our families as huge and so uh that's that's uh that's gonna be my recommendation and she's already certified she's certified also yes uh yes mr president mr president um this is the first of two brothers this guy really wants to be here as well uh came from up north he's relocated here he loves ahu he wants to be a part uh i think what stood out in the interviews when he pretty much just looked at me and he said i want to

be a part of the community and all who has a very proud tradition and i want to i want to give back so he's he's got a lot of heart and he has a lot of experience construction oil rigging experience working in temperatures 60 below zero so he's done the hard hardcore work and he'll be a great asset to our own to our district unemployment yes jason horton is is his brother uh also relocated here from up north she wants to be here as well um stood out in his interview and and the same reason he wants to continue to be a part of the community and so um i am going to recommend the approval of the employment of mr horton as a maintenance custodian worker and so um i believe he did uh

speak speak to you mr guthrie if i understand correctly and that was a condition that that i shared with him that please notify your current employer um [Music] uh mr president uh she was interviewed reference checks completed i recommend the approval of mr ortiz as a teacher's aide a very critical position in talking with dr chabots paraprofessional the special projects the department one-to-one and we need that and that's the bottom line yes mr president uh ms vega also interviewed reference checks completed uh same critical position paraprofessional special projects one to one um we need that dr chabot has reminded me miss angelina miss candice before she left in this house and this chelly we need those one-to-one professionals i can take a quote from patrick's lazy ditto okay and i will go into more detail

um we we need the one to one i don't know what else to say okay [Music] and i conducted the interviews a few weeks ago and uh is um she's interviewed reference check's completed we believe she's going to have a lot of energy she wants to be i believe she also has her students here but she wants to be a part of the team and give back to the community so we've got to keep [Music] mr president recommending the approval of employment of the above individuals we also have in the works uh dr chabots might be able to talk about this person a little more he's met with another potential uh candidate who has a degree in business also a cte certificate or he has what's called the realtor he'll be eligible and he's bilingual

so we're working with him miss angelina dr and actually we he was he was introduced to us to through one of our law enforcement community members who brought him on campus and introduced him to us so that made me feel good that people in the community know that hey they need help getting substituted um do you have enough one-to-one teachers now uh our paraprofessionals are you still looking uh i would have to refer that to dr chabots i i believe we're real close but because i know there are quite a number of youngsters who need that and i don't know if there are any left from last year sometimes we gain students like within the last few days yeah i don't know about that i was like it might have been nice to get this

heads up so uh but uh but yeah we're still we're short i got hold of we i have a text right here asking what i can interview next so for childhood director doug shane as jlm indian education coordinator jay barry holland as different coordinator robert casey as the power school mentor art my go middle school student council marceli munoz athletic coordinator and co-senior class of advisor chad chinji cte and jk director jose mia senor co senior class advisor and drama class director [Music] yes sir uh mr president um is recommended that the board approve the above employees for their corresponding positions they all play uh critical roles they do a lot and quite frankly if they wouldn't do this i don't know who else would because um mr casey can dr chabot mr simon can't

miss angelina and i wouldn't be able to so uh we need them in these critical uh clothes and so that's that's my recommendation um i was just looking through there's somebody i don't see all of them there but yeah sure thank you next item is discussion on business items eight [Music] well yes mr president we have here where um you guys get to have a you know this will be uh this is a board decision so you can talk about who you would want to on september 10th the saturday after the law conference that mr hopkins and i will be at asp is asking member boards to vote on the 2023 political agenda vote for new officers to serve on the asda board of directors county meetings election of county directors who serve along with

officers on the asba board of directors so um the board can choose to not send a delegate for the current year or send a delegate and decide what the delegate is but that will be uh your decision yes it's the next day this is uh this is your scene it's our chance to have a say in what the sba does politically and it's a pretty powerful meeting for a small school like us because it's only one it's a vote per district so we get as much of a vote on these matters as tucson or big distribution so you think it's important um if you're willing to do it that's it yes mr president um uh regarding the uh arizona school board's association a policy advisory for approval of a new policy jldab so um some

of the stuff you all received uh and providers policy the regulation and the exhibit um i went ahead and and spoke with nick joseph the director for legal and policy services with aspa shared with me uh what what the main focus is of this policy is um that our district would be able to continue we'll be able to have school-based referrals for all students uninsured or underinsured students can get service um to also working with with access so everyone will have a chance for for for services an opt-in policy that we can follow enables all children to get funding for behavioral health treatment this was created by the legislature also it was meant to include parents involvement and so in talking with mr casey i shared this miss angelina and myself reached out to dr

chabots and mr casey and and mr casey was sharing with us the process that we currently have so so correct me if i if i'm wrong in any way mr casey teachers with parents permission selfless behavioral referral the counselor gets involved and works for the parents for the most part is that right yes and so he also shared we it would be good for us to have a policy a place like this for us to continue doing this and so that's what um the intention was of this policy and uh that's what in talking with mr bazan also he shared with me to share with you that for wednesday to recommend the approval of the attached policy of jldab upon second reading now this title is discussion report on offlineschools.org yes sir mr president um

we have a very special guest with us you all are very special but this next guest is especially special today and uh we have our i.t director mr simon i believe this is very critical that you hear it from him um i can't tell you my version and he's okay but he's rit director he's a director for a reason so he did a lot of research over the last week or so he's going to share with you about our transformation in rahul schools.org and i just really felt it'd be better if you heard it you know from dr mr simon himself so uh mr simon um in a nutshell the way that we have been running the email addresses here with tabletop is if you yourself as an individual were to go and get cox

internet tabletop telephone comcast they would just give you as a courtesy an email address it's just a personal email address it doesn't have uh any regard as to like say the bylaws that we have to follow within the district or anything like that whereas uh the g suite or uh the google based system that we switched to i get uh i've come to learn that we switched to that majorly when um the rona broke out hardcore and everybody had to go to distance learning so um i actually took the liberty of printing out an email that i that angelina got like just august 5th so this just came through since i've worked here um there have been i mean that i've seen like four or five attacks that i've known about and like we traced

one to like a teacher's computer that had like some weird browser extension installed so like these attacks do come even though we're just some small districts down in the corner of arizona um so this email right here is kind of cut off and not displayed very well but at the bottom of the first page it says attention angelina at tabletop telephone due to congestion in our mail server all unverified accounts will be shut down unless you verify please verify by of course you know putting your full name your email address your password and then confirming your password and this if you look it comes from admins at tabletoptelephone.com so obviously tabletop is not verifying accounts this was a phishing email um and one of the most popular ways that hackers do things is to not

actually uh not actually hack but it's what they call social engineering which is to send an email that creates a sense of urgency all logic goes out the window et cetera so angelina obviously knew and picked up on this but if she just hadn't or clicked the link or just thought oh let me secure this real quick i mean potentially just because of her position here i mean it could have sent us back to 1995 electronically and that's not an exaggeration we got ransomware on our servers i mean it could be the end you know until we completely start from almost a year 2000 type collapse you know the tin foil hat one that never happened so um i know that there were some concerns um there was a i think uh garrett who is

our basically um i'm pretty entry level into it i admit that but uh garrett had his like a seasoned veteran at like 15 years and he started like sweeping the floor of i t and worked his way up to like a systems engineer um i mean these answers are all pretty simple and straightforward uh except i mean if there's any any other questions having to do with uh following the guidelines i mean google by definition is going to automatically comply with all of the bylaws it was designed for schools and of course google is a billion-dollar conglomerate who hires the sharpest minds in the industry all of their policies and protections are constantly they're dynamic they're constantly updating whereas no offense to tabletop but they're just a little internet company in the middle of the

comparison you know so um it kind of seems like a natural progression that you know we set things up and make things more secure because tech is only going in one direction and we basically just have to follow um with all that being said um there were some account questions i can literally just recap them or put them in my own words but are we abandoning all the tabletop email accounts uh no we're not abandoning them we're just making aho schools the primary because there's a lot of confusion oh did you send it to my table top did you send it to my ipo schools and any organization on earth can benefit from increased communication efficiency all the way from the military down to little government things like us yeah um yeah basically uh tabletop

telephone is an older system it's uh it's the way that it's built is kind of archaic if you download it on if you have tabletop on multiple computers and you download something to one computer then it will not show up on the other computer whereas gmail is much more modern if you download it to your phone it still shows up on your computer it still shows up on anything else that displays it i don't know if alexis did that yet but it's probably coming um will board members continue to access the yes that's a simple answer can we port our email history no that's uh part of the problem with tabletop is that um when i'm trying to set up somebody's computer to and their outlook to check their email if they don't know their

password because you know they used it once last year and then click save um then i have to email oh on an unsecured line by mind you um elloweena over at um tabletop and then it takes her 10 minutes 20 minutes usually she's very fast for that i'm grateful but like if i catch her towards the end of the day i would get an email till the next day that holds me up that holds the teachers up and it eventually affects the students so i can pull out my phone and reset somebody's password um and email in like 15 seconds so it keeps things like efficient um how will tabletop email records be preserved uh yeah the district will have to rely on tabletop basically and the computers in which these tabletop emails are stored

with google they pretty much give us not an unlimited but a seemingly unlimited amount of space that we can store emails on and they're automatically compliant um with all of the alphabet suit rules i've never seen that afterwards the so let me see who has direct access to tabletop um that's again part of the reason we're switching nobody here has direct access we can't fix it we can't work on it we don't have anything we basically call up and call a customer service line every time we have any little problem including email uh password resets and i should not be doing password resets over uh over an email system it's basically like it's insecure the um email records preserved for g suite that's automatic who on staff has direct access to other schools that would

be me and the people at safari micro that are helping us out um basically uh it does say changes are love and cannot be altered so even my activity is tracked and monitored so it's not like i can you know willy-nilly do whatever i please with that sort of thing um when can you expect your accounts to be published on the district's website that's um that's a simple update that we can do um we're basically just uh waiting for the approve waiting from everybody to give us the you know the go ahead on such a thing um we have an ability to this is kind of a sideline we have an ability to if you don't really want to use the aho schools email we can have it auto forward you to your personal email

but then that kind of gets into compliance issues so it might just be best if we all just learned how to use that um i know that was kind of a possibility that was discussed previously i'm not exactly sure what can be done to protect our published accounts or spam and hacking uh well basically that's that's gmail and g suite the google admin services you know t gives a incredibly diverse array of features that we can we have certain keywords that intercept emails if people talk about certain criteria violence sexuality stuff like that um and then uh and then we need to deal with them as necessary but other than that um all the emails just go from one person to another and nobody's out there watching those sites so all right i mean not

this after myself but nobody's out there watching besides the people sending a receipt so i don't know if anybody else had any questions and so are all of our emails are george mentioned that in the past there's been some questions about can we use personal email we've had some discussions with that about our attorney in the past and he recommended to not because all of our emails are subject to disclosure and once you start using your personal uh email accounts those are two so spider um so there are there's three policies including here that have to do with uh you know communication for board members um you all have a chance to look at them i i recommend it um george so support requests for access to email um email records he would make a

request to you is that uh i'm not certain of him like the legality uh i mean uh i don't know does the superintendent have the capacity to insist that i disclose an email i have no idea i honestly if that if that does apply um then i would have to basically do it as requested of course okay and then and that would be there will be records at that yes yeah email is tracked uh you know recorded yeah um and let's see oh so just a request once we're all up and running on it i'm still getting all of my correspondence from asba to my tabletop account we can all get those accounts changed absolutely sure yeah that all the district secretaries have a in through asba and i go in and i have each

of your profiles and i can change email addresses and contact information and people so yeah i can change that great thank you george you said the table is up there no unfortunately yeah it's especially like taking all the bulk of the correspondence and then moving it is like a total no go just you can't get the two companies to talk to one another like that we're not at that point in technology no i knew they couldn't do the whole i knew they couldn't send like the mass of all the emails there might be a way to set up like an auto response um i think i looked into that on tabletop on their web client but i didn't see it i know outlook has the capabilities for auto responses but outlook is like a bit

of a weak point in mind auto responses are definitely possible but um would you have an open an outlook account for it to autoresponders with the staff members using our schools 90 percent of us 95 of us use outlook either with our tabletop and our our schools we don't have it jointly like the old schools at the table top or everything just comes to one so up with the staff members because everything's just saved on the server so even the tabletop emails that we had would be saved on a remote desktop on the server through outlook now if anything got deleted and we had to reboot or whatever for the staff it's easy for the board members is that it's more difficult because you're not using or i don't know that you're not using outlook

and you're not using our server that gets backed up again so um so for we are technically 99 misused outlook from our remote desktop we don't actually log into tabletop or log into uh gmail i i do because it's like the the youtube is off of my office schools the facebook is on throughout a whole zoom uh google meets everything above my awful school so we get it for free because we're an actual school district so um i'm probably one of the only like handful of people that actually log into gmail through my aqua schools because all of the different little apps are connected to it through the website everything is connected through my arnold schools so um i'm sorry so that can get back then if you guys aren't using outlook and you're not

using it consistently through either tabletop or all tools it's harder to to get back back up or to get that because cable top if you use it through the rds their server then there's not a lot that you can do about it yeah what you're saying is once you receive an email somewhere it's gone cleared off of their server whereas gmail hosts everything and i'd also like to add that you don't have to you with the appleschools.org you don't have to set up outlook outlook could be a bit of a rat's nest first you can go to gmail.com type in your email address type in your password and there you are there's all your emails from any computer in the entire planet hook up in here so nice easy barry log out of one gmail

i've been doing another one yeah i mean you can yeah you can uh you can even log into the chrome browsers now which is nice and it'll carry over all your bookmarks from one computer to another wherever you're in i mean this is so um so google or gmail and i have it saved in here so and it'll ask you my it's rodney with the capital so i have everything that's where laura's right here doing google meets so and then the this camera is doing youtube and it's all through my uphold but if i log into my remote desktop i have it through my outlook right again so everything all comes to one sometimes like you said for practice you can get convoluted because you're just pushing everything to that outlook and then you have

to follow what out out there but this is just for our accounts our accounts like the sba council those will be moved over to our our office schools accounts so that will that will most of that will be resolved um right i'm just waiting for you guys to tell me like hey i'm comfortable with all the schools i log in and then i can go to the the website and say okay now this has changed this email address to this email address and that's the logic so all of that's fairly simple i'm just waiting for some of you to use it already um but i didn't want to just completely change everything and then you'll be standing there so i was just waiting for the subject to actually do something like that does that make

sense i'll have one set up tonight i'm glad to be here the next on the student uh data for the district uh mr president um has his data analyst mr casey here he is a data guru whatever you can think of he's already thought about it and done it and he has about six different hats as well yes so he's going to share some critical uh student achievement information good evening everyone i started here in 2012 as the student data analyst so that was my only title at the time of course i taught a couple of high school math classes but throughout the time whenever i introduced myself as a student data analyst so let's start with the involvement summary from this evening so this is our involvement we have 428 students as of today

including pre-k and kindergarten let's go to the next one these are the school grades um 2017. elementary and high school had c's and 2018 he had an elementary headless c and high school got at b after that the state did not assign any new grades they continued to keep like we were allowed to keep the same grade or we were allowed to keep the better of the two grades so the schools had the same grades in 2019 and 2020 due to the new assessment and it recovered 2021 they didn't grade the schools but there will be the state board of education will be coming up with the criteria for new school grades this fall and so we'll be getting another grade in 2022. this is a graduation rate from 2018 to 2022. we have been

sometime really good in 90s mid 90s but last year it was at 81.82 we have to say we have been graduating almost all the students who are enrolled here at the end of their high school term um these missing students are like they were dropped out sometime during their freshman year junior year or sophomore year and in some cases we were not able to track those students when they moved to another state or another country we couldn't book humans sufficiently enough to count them as continuing their education so some of these students may have moved on to another district or in the state especially on the state and graduated from there but they are counted as dropout for our district so this is the state test results in math starting in 2010 to 2014 is

ames results as you can see the red is bad or the lowest performance level we have different names across different tests sometimes it was called false far below some cases it was called like a minimally proficient so it changed the terminology changed but they always had a four level performance branch very below grade level and one is like approaching or partially proficient and the green stand for proficient and blue for highly proficient or about grade level these are combined results for all grades um from 2010 to 2022. in between we are missing 2020 because there was no state assessment during that year as you can see we were improving from 2010 to 2014 and they we had consistently the same assessment there was also funding differences like significantly increased funding during the same years of

0532012-2014 uh and after that the new assessment ac married in 2015 um things changed all together and then we made improvements through 2019 we can see the red part of it is going down but the yellow the approaching part showing some progress or like somewhere in the same area but then the covert impact you can see that in 2021 and 2022 also like the change in instruction and 2022 also changing assessment so at this point i can say these are the actual numbers 149 and the 37 all those numbers are the actual number of students uh but if you notice like all the bars are at the same level because they are like standardized to a percentage so when you look at it you can compare them from year to year but you can all

you can also you also have to keep in mind that it is not the same assessment the situation was not the same there is a lot of different things that come into play the funding number the teachers and the number of students and the environment there are so many other factors impacting this i think 2015 when we got all of our we got like six teachers were turned around that year yeah so they're finding changes there were also like the multiple hacks that i started wearing came because of that too so some of that like number of stuff total number of teachers who are reduced all that came with the global i mean decrease in funding this is all the same data but in numbers the left hand side is the actual number of students

which you saw as bar graph the right hand side is the close and page and if you look at the bottom line to the right far right at the bottom we have very close to 10 of students being proficient this year adding the last two calls like 8.25 and 1.46 so that is like 9. seven something so that is how much the percentage of students became proficient in grades three to eight in aasa math assessment so i can say 9.7 something very close to 10 percent and at the state level we had 33 of the students being proficient this year we were close to 10 you know so when we compare it to the state some of those schools were open throughout the time of course or like they were in school most of the

time the city schools did much better compared to the schools that are broken this is the earlier results a similar trend like increased performance in the beginning years um and through the aims test now somewhat consistent or like a through the ac military and acm two years like somewhere around the same range and towards the later 2021 and 22 you can see the students who have significantly addressed the increase when the way out and the number of students who are proficient is has gone down and the same data in numbers and the left hand side is again actual numbers and the right hand side is percentage and the last row 2020 to spring aaa we had 13.5 of the students proficient adding the last two columns and 72 percent minimally proficient or at the lowest

level what subject and at the state they had 40 percent students proficient and foreign is 13.5 but one thing when we get the results the students see it as either they passed or they or they'll see the four performance levels um but they don't get to see how close they were to being proficient and especially with the new assessment they are significant multiple choice tests and there we get to see how many of the questions they got for answers we are right out of the total number of questions and with that data looking at individual students i counted and calculated about six percentage of those students were within like four points if they had answered four more questions correctly this is like about somewhere between forty three to fifty something questions different grade levels have

different number of questions but out of that like if they had four more answers right they would have been proficient so that is a significant number of students who are very close to being proficient and if you can get those students move up and like first part of it is going to be letting those students know that even though you also say that you are not proficient but you are very close to being proficient and working with them and like motivating them and making sure that those who are proficient last year stay continue to stay proficient and highly proficient and show progress in themselves that will help us improve our great uh school grade for them this year i'm really worried about our school grade but instead of like seeing it as information i'm looking

for data that is actionable that is useful that can be acted upon and this is where one piece of information i see is like those students who are very close we need to get the proficient within this year itself and we also need to move a lot of students who are in the approaches or very close to being the second level they need to be moving up one level and the beyond textbook this year we adopted that and that is definitely going to help us make sure that we are covering all the standards by the testing so that is also going to help us in this okay let's go to the next one the previous slides were showing data for grades three to eight but we administered the nuvia numbers evaluatives association measures of academic

progress that's the name of the test and that's a benchmark that we gave three times a year one beginning of the year sometime like towards the late august or beginning of september and second time in winter and the third time we administered us at the end of the year to see how much progress we made through the year and we started administering that in and this is from kindergarten through 12th grade everyone takes this so this comparison this is like giving us information on students below 3rd grade and students who are in high school this is the results from math kindergarten through 12th grade and you can see that a similar trench of like students at risk is going up especially through the last two years and this is at five level they categorize them

into five levels the low low average average high average and high so it's a different categorization instead of the four levels this has five different levels but you can still see the lowest level is going up and definitely you know the reasons the hardships that we have been going through through the last two years okay and this is the same data in numbers and we have if you add up the last two columns at the bottom row you can see nine plus sixty about fifteen percent of the students um close to being proficient in that and this is english language arts and the trend is similar and especially like a this one is missing 20 21 here because we didn't administer it in uh during that year we didn't administer the november but we did

administer the state assessment during that year but the benchmarks were connected to head generated during that okay let's move on and here going to the last row columns 13 plus 5 is 18 proficiency reading another um important number here is like close to 10 percent of our students receive special education services um and a quarter of our students are english learners like close to 25 of our students are english learners who are still taking as a assessment so they these two groups when you see like higher number of students who are at the lower level it is not only because of the other struggles other impacts but also students who are new to the district students who have very limited english they are like learning english and like because of that they in the first

few years or first couple of years they will be performing at the lower level and then they show improvement we have about another like 10 percent of our students who are formerly el students and then they became proficient and some of them became proficient on the state assessment too and i said profession they became proficient on the other english language assessment from the state and they also became proficient on the stage achievement test when we say students receiving special education some of those students are proficient but what i am trying to say is like a lot of students need the extra support and extra resources for them to be performing last year our even though we have like about 25 percent close to 100 students in the el department we only had five students who

were counted as proficient who changed from intermediate or like basic to proficiency last year but we have a significant number of our students made improvement and they have like a 36 of our students are at the intermediate level and about half of these students they are already proficient in at least two of the four areas they have like reading writing listening and speaking out of the four two of those areas they are already proficient and some students like they are like just this close like two points or three points that they need um so those students definitely need to hear that they were very close to being proficient so that they can put in that extra effort and pass this year and if we improve this english proficiency that is definitely going to help us

reclassifying english learners as fluent um or proficient english learners that is going to help us with our school grade definitely like moving students upward on their achievement test which is the aasa the state assessment that is going to help us and students who are in the special education who are documented correctly and we provide them the correct right support that will also give us points towards the school grade and improving english proficiency will also give us points towards school grade for high school graduation and enrollment um and meeting seven requirements like taking cte classes and completing fafsa all those things will give us points and another thing that we are going to explore is something called some achievement in certain areas which the state is calling it as diploma seal those seals for certain areas

like civics and personal finance so we are going to look into that students may have to take certain assessments and ask and bilingual literacy is one of those so if we have significant number of english learners who are becoming proficient and doing well then they may also achieve some of these recognitions later on when they go to high school okay so that's all i have if you have any questions i'll be happy to ask you were you aware these numbers when you took the job uh to be honest no but i i knew the most recent numbers because 2019 were the last data that everyone saw and so i mean i can't speak to when he said i think a lot of people went down not just here in southern arizona where i won't name

the district but there was a school that had an a they were like 86 to 88 2019 data and they took their 2021 aaasa test to see where their students were and um they were adi is 60.05 i think under the the most recent k-8 scores 6.05 was a 60.11 is where you have to get to be a c the school that was the name this district high 80s 2019 after the 2021 uh assessment everyone took they're at 62. everybody i think went down because you're looking at i think there's three tests right you you go to azmerit then i want to easy m2 for two years and aasa which is crazy it's just like it's almost like what's an analogy that the goalpost of the globe statistics you want to have at least a

good five to seven year window of the same assessment and you see right there in three years azm2 is just two years so what i am excited about is similarities um in my previous school comparing it to our school we talked about the ells i mean there is a great chance to get if the if the formula stays the same mr casey and dr chavox i think it's ten points you get for ells five for growth five for proficiency when he shows that thirty six percent of our intermediate that's real exciting because if we get two or three or five four or five more points on those ten points that we didn't get that helps push our score up so you can it's not just the ela and math per se but then also with

the graduation rate and the other things that he shared there's other ways to really get those points but if you do show growth in your ells it's going to help you double so there's a lot of room for growth and i remember in your interview process you thought that improving those scores would bring the whole school along it definitely helps 25 is about say if you estimate 428 students 100 students at least if they go up they can help the whole school but they go up in multiple areas that helps us overall i see ics he mentioned a great point beyond textbooks that's a great foundation another thing if i'm wrong wasn't the 11 through 14 school years when the state was dumping a ton of money and turnarounds and improvements for schools also so

a lot more resources available during that four-year period and then all of a sudden gone so i'm sure that had some money merit an azm2 a lot more rigorous than aims right yes it was not only the multiple choice but it all had like a description and more like a different types of responses not multiple choices yeah easy m2 and ac merit it's amazing how just a small small percent can really change things and my dissertation basically was on how back then aims as a language test and nothing more be more proficient in english you're not going to do well and the more background knowledge you had which usually means the wealthier you are the more the better your vocabulary the better you are proficient that english and you're really going to skyrocket um so

just come to talk around rdl students are very important to us in improving our schoolwide grade and uh i reminded every class today that what you know to why we're here on canvas speaking english to each other especially for our eel students is so important to help each other out because once you leave here one i know many of them aren't speaking english and they don't hear the households so we gotta practice while we're here on campus and it works like if you have four four or el kids together and uh one of them usually can communicate but they've got to help the any bush in it but they've got to help the other ones out too so we always talk about that just practice and how blessed they are to be able to speak

two languages i always remind them of that i'm not saying speak english speak english like that's the way the practice is here and most of our parents that's what you they want as well so we raise those scores and we're going to see we're going to see improvement it's just tough comparing comparing assessments like that the large districts will have the you know 50 000 students 30 000 students that stayed in school the whole year when we went to edgenuity and so those large numbers those kids stayed in school and their scores are higher i mean that's where you see the state rankings just kind of blows away from the rural schools that didn't have those opportunities so there's some catching up to do but if you know where to look and what the pinpoint

you use your tier one two and three interventions appropriately including two of them and uh and we'll see an increase but but be prepared when the state comes out with the letter grade we're going to be loved and how does that affect us well well i think i think i believe we can only get better you know but but we'll have i'm excited about when i hear mr casey talk about the map the nwea they have five sessions it really helps us just you know break down the data even more um ela the math the ozella a really good enriched data conversations i believe we're going to improve not even seeing what the letter grade is um just because there are so many factors that are out of our control and now we have things

that we can't control ell the focus the assessments formative assessments are critical we have a strong curriculum framework we didn't have for i don't know how many years now we have beyond textbooks which it's going to give us a guide um consistency and assessments is the second year of aasa so hopefully it's just we have that consistency but just now knowing what to be prepared for even more because it just the only constant is change it keeps changing but now now we're ready you know we can only get better i say that from the heart and i believe we will get better but it's going to take some really you know some really um learning focused confronting conversations all of us with our staff with everybody that these are the numbers what can we do

but we have we have a great foundation of teachers we really do i i i believe in our team and i have a lot of confidence that we're going to see growth and and on this new model i think what brent from beyond textbooks was talking about if the model stays the same for the letter grade accountability 50 is growth so you saw a lot of reds so i i didn't see where i saw opportunity those minimally proficient can go to um partially proficient the yellow we get points we get 0.6 and if those yellows can go to the next one proficient we get 0.4 so 50 is growth and if we show a lot of growth even if they don't get to proficient but we cut down that red section that's going to help

us towards improving our better grade so there's a lot of ways to improve and i think after the whole 2020 thing you're going to see a whole new baseline of letter grades for schools across the state everyone i mean i think we're just going to see a negative on everybody's grades now you might have a few you know like you said that were in school and it might excel but i think on the whole we're going to see just all districts across the state just drop down school that i told you about had a lot had a reading coach had a reading coach a reading um two kinds of reading specialists and they were in a took the same test everyone else had to take so 20 to 21 to get an idea one point

from me to d [Music] coming in you know it's like coming in as an underdog as coach all right i'll take that you know this is where we started i didn't have anything to do with that this is where they're going to go i'm going to have everything to do with coding and so i think just that fresh that fresh blood coming in and getting everyone motivated on the same page i think there's only one way to go so that that part you can't kind of turn around and say yeah there's a bright side to this i'm speaking for myself i can't think of two better leaders on our district than you guys so i'm glad you're here we work together mr casey ms mercy our special director our ell coordinator other teacher leaders we

have a really strong foundation from lilly our new teachers right we've gone through the beyond textbooks leadership retreat we had a course hall of 10 people right now 10 people who got the training there's a this this is the right time to be here we're gonna we're gonna show we're gonna show it i want you to speak to your question about the significance of the letter grades just practically if i'm a parent and i'm new to this town and i'm deciding whether i'm homeschooled or to sell my kids to school i'm going to go i'm going to work on the internet that's going to be one of the first things i look at because the school's a lot of great is so it has a pretty direct impact on our potential numbers and enrollment numbers

um i also want to point out that i love data i love grades i this is the most um expensive report that we've received since i've been a board member and i really super appreciate that um and can we get the slides could you email us the slide slides that you yes but i also want to point out that this is about individual student success and the better when meet the needs of our students the better these numbers are going to be so it's not our kids really absolutely okay anything else next item business update on that solution yes mr president both have some very uh critical information for us and this can also help i think uh address some of what we just saw so um so as you remember recall we had come

to agreement with grad solutions and signed the contract that we'd be working together ade had some dates that they required um they had some requirements that we needed to get in on certain dates we followed that and got the information in so we needed a new entity number so that we could start a new school and go through this process somewhere in the middle of the summer time towards maybe beginning of summer um grad solutions gets a hold of us and says look we're having a hard time with some of our districts adp is has changed their verdict to where um even though we had things in on time and our information out of time we applied for this for this uh alternate alternative school um it's it's not going to take place but here's

the people's numbers to call and accountability and so there's different organizations within epd talking to each other or not talking to each other so of course when i get that information time for me to call them and say hey can you make some exceptions because here's what your wording says everybody's on vacation when i call two week vacation um and so that really never got hashed out grad solutions came and spoke to dr soltero and i a few weeks ago so that we could kind of say make sure we're all on the same page sure enough ade came out and uh and said look you can reapply again and it's going to be second semester and um the same process you had before the entity number it kind of has they've got their act together

now and you can do that and then come july first so next summer july 1st you'll actually have that alternative school and when you get the ball rolling what's going to happen about it even though we were late to the game we had everything in in on time and believe me you know me if i hadn't gotten it on time i just tell you it didn't happen like whatever you know and mistakes happen but this time dang and i did get it in on time and they failed so that's like that that's unusual but um but then it's going to work out so what they are going to do with this this year is they're they've taken the names mr casey talked about the students that were considered dropouts because we didn't have that information

we have the contract with them they go through adp they're allowed to have those students names and they're allowed to go and research and they have to beat manpower to do it they're going to get try to get a hold of those those students and do whatever it takes to uh to get them if they haven't graduated to graduate if they've gone to another school or graduated they're going to have that information and it'll come back and we can change that those numbers change you know it may be a year or so behind what we really wanted but but those numbers will at least be able to go up i mean one student as you know our numbers just jumped up because we have so few um so so they are taking that list and

they're going to work on that and we're just in constant communication with them to get to make sure that everything's aligned and we're ready to go for uh for next year to have it ready and they're also they're also working on some other things since we do have that we do have that agreement with them that they want to help us any way they can with possibly some guidance counseling even if it's through zoom and they're looking into some other things that where they're like hey we don't want to lose touch with you we don't get you know it's really solid and going so we want to do what we can too and help out so they've been really helpful that way and try to figure out how we can utilize them this year but

um so it's unfortunate that we weren't able to get that off the school up and running right now but i'll make sure it's in place and using them [Music] yes sir i'm going to kind of walk around a little mr president just uh and i apologize for my whole long story trip my wife and daughter are coming back from ensenada so we're just getting into human hair so i just want to make sure that they're okay they're coming back that's good but um uh angelina's gonna have this on the screen bless you and um share this here with everybody here's mr casey so i i just i'll go through this uh as you know as concise as as i can but at the same time just going over some critical information because a lot of

i think what what was talked about earlier really goes into these goals um i want to just give a few a few uh caveats before the weekly update i normally give you today just for this week i'm gonna make it happen wednesday during the superintendent's information report so i'm going to share with you what i would share during the update on the report wednesday so that's that's coming just done when we have the meetings that we you'll get something for me monday and wednesday so that's just a heads up um goal number one as you can see i have three goals here and setting up my goals i made sure to speak with uh to meet with uh my mentor through the superintendent's collaborative just to give me some good solid guidance on having some

some smart goals in place and so the first one talks about improving academic achievement that's what we talked about just a few items ago and and i want to really highlight a bullet number one professional development very critical for teachers i really consider this a big win and this is talked about in our superintendent collaborative celebrate your big wins first and foremost i want to get your attention to our back poster right there that is critical we came up with our leadership retreat on this third year in the boardroom we had about 12 people of the three of us and nine teacher leaders that's our y statement for beyond textbooks we're gonna make that really nice and have it up right here but it says beyond textbooks provides a compass and guide to help teachers

teach the students effectively standards i'm sorry standards in a timely efficient manner to improve both student and teacher performance student performance teacher performance approved you're going to see an improvement in our numbers and we have that now as a guide it's going to help us we have a pd set for also this wednesday i believe dr chabots i believe an assistant superintendent or choose coming from vail to come and work with our staff to call the bt 101 a couple hours of training in addition to supporting the goal we talked about it earlier mr casey the map the measurement of academic progress formative assessments devils as zelda that's going to be in place but also digging down even deeper in the data data analysis with our leadership team progress monitoring the students to see how

they're growing from the first assessment to the second to the third but also any formative assessments are necessary in place in between to measure growth and in the last bulleted point here on this goal on goal number one regarding data analysis progress monitoring planning with our business manager uh ms smith has been uh very critical in working with dr chabots and i as far as making sure we're using the financial resources to to benefit our students and staff as much as possible beyond textbooks there's i believe um over 100 000 students in throughout the states in the country that are using this framework it works we're not reinventing the wheel bail school district we talked about letter grades i think they have 15 schools at least 12 or if not more or a schools so

we're not just going out there with beyond textbooks here we are we're following a guide we're following a district if you look at the data the groups in the pudding they're a schools that's where we want to go that's why also a big reason why we partnered with them and they're going to be giving us ongoing professional development the whole year so we're excited about this that's goal number one about improving academic achievement uh goal goal number two i want to share with you uh establishing and expanding upon community partnerships is very critical not only throughout our school district community in ajo but also throughout pima county in the state uh there are some strategies right there that we have for you that i have for you relationships are critical with community members internal and

external i've been very fortunate to start this already with every one of you i enjoyed our one to one uh mr guthrie gave me the tour but we had a good just heart to heart with each and every one of you about what you feel the strengths are of the district where we can improve and what your goals are i need to know what are your goals that helps guide me and how we work ongoing throughout the whole year also attending all of the uh superintendent collaborative network meetings is very critical we've already had one the aspiring superintendents academy for latino leaders we've had two um we have our first pima county superintendent collaborative meeting uh next thursday and it i i really i can't stress this enough this is very critical to just to

develop relationships because there's items that we've had on this is our third meeting now that i've talked with a number of you about where through these relationships as part of of my goals networking with other superintendents how do you guys handle this policy we had a challenge with this policy in the first meeting long story short i'm gonna set up where i go and visit superintendent's neighboring district that helps us helps us have the most efficient policy to where i want to make sure that i'm taking care of you and doing my job and that we're making the best informed decision possible on critical items that affect all our stakeholders some examples of goal one and goal two go one high school graduation rate also by having this increased focus data analysis formative assessments uh

k three increasing the k three literacy rate move on grading having more proficient students that all has a connection in goal one on improving academic achievement and also as you saw the data it can improve the data as well with the different subgroups uh goal number two you talk about relationships some real life events that have taken place um partnership with lieutenant olsen pima county sheriff's office and deputy gosano they were here august 4th at the open house they had 100 backpacks guess how many they passed out all of them they ran out they were so excited they ran out of all the backpacks they said we're excited about this this hasn't happened in a long time so that that's that's positive um the rotary club was in here this morning miss farmer and ms

heard we passed out 30 backpacks to our fourth graders it's 130 it's it's those relationships it's critical having that those partnerships um meeting with the people from isda rotary club international day of peace is set for september 21st we've been planning with lizzion so this is critical this helps us also get to where we want to go with our achievement we have those partnerships we have those those connections goal number three uh the superintendent will provide will promote family engagement through ongoing opportunities in offline unified school district i want to just share some of the strategies of provide celebrations and recognitions for student achievement looking at classes reports formative assessments dibbles asella establish ongoing family meetings on school safety and other critical topics throughout the year i really would like to start our school safety

meetings the goal is to start this month ms angelina and myself already met july 29th with the trust we met with the trust the emergency management services team manager katie soares and consultant jennifer corey they met with us we shared with them through dr chabot's partnership working working with us we shared with them our executive operations procedures our emergency response plan procedures our lockdown evacuation active shooter they have those documents they're looking through those documents they're going to give us feedback because it's good to get feedback from people who are outside of your four walls they work with all the other districts in the state they want to do a personal walkthrough right angelina they want to come down angelina was very savage she googled matt real fast aerial map of our district so they
