we need to order all right the roll call mr hopkins is absent mr cruiser this second's here mr guthrie mr robinson here dr dooley here dr cheval and mrs burns eric you want to go on are you it's adoption of the agenda [Music] no you have to do adoption of the agenda first miss duncan i and mr crozier all right okay now everyone please stand and join me i pledge allegiance to the climate of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all the next argument is information items and i had talked to mr um hopkins about having someone on the board with me give a report so i would like to just tell everyone that last saturday night at
the elks we had an award banquet and at that time the certain elks and citizens of the community were given awards and i am very happy to report that mr lonnie guthrie became aho citizen of the year we need to get there it was for his work at the ambulance for his work with sports with his work with kids with his work at the school board and other things as well but those are the main items all right the consent agenda may we have a motion for the consent agenda i'll make wall street mr guthrie miss stephen i mr cruznerage mrs robinson hi all right the next item that bill um um the board is the personnel would you like for me since we didn't have a space station to go through here the first
one is the essential classified resignation last year in april during the meet and prayer agreement uh carmen ochoa one of the school secretaries uh submitted her resignation by a certain deadline it was april 15th and she received a small stipend to be attached to her salary this year her resignation at that time stayed she resigned and at the end of may uh her situation changed which which we're glad for because that's the time of year we all help we can get over there um her situation changed she could work through um in the end of the fiscal year this year so we're changing her resignation we're sending her work agreement from may 31st to uh june 30th so i'll ask the board to prove that and then we would just go on and vote yes
quick all right um i need a motion that we would approve the extension of carmen ochoa's uh classified resignation under promotion mr guthrie mr robinson hi miss duncan aye mr cruzenrich okay going on to the next one uh the stink next personal lab is a classified resignation of uh custodian um fausto we call him tito young is to stole him and i'm on support of it which makes me kind of frustrated uh jose all right tito's been working here for about 10 years hasn't he something like that he's been a good employee we will miss him uh regret to uh receive his resignation but i encourage the board to accept it is he retiring or is he going to work may i have a motion to accept the resignation of tito young caution i'll second
it mr um miss robinson all right mr eye mr cruz hi leave you with one guy now we hired we got another person um the next personal item is accepting to the classified uh red peripheral resignation uh miss laurie daniels she submitted her resignation last week effective march 1st um third man the board proved that uh her resignation i don't know what we could do if the board didn't improve it's always one of those jokes about we can't we wouldn't padlock anybody's leg to the desk but it's a formality we need to do for personnel okay i'll make motion a second mr guthrie mr robinson hi miss duncan i mr crossing ridge thank you um the next item on personnel is the employment classified employment of the custodial maintenance worker benjamin aguiar aguiar gonzalez mr
aguiar gonzalez has children in school and we he we interviewed him his brother his resignation his uh recommendations uh came through it took us a little while we thought we could get this done earlier but his uh references were strong so it's a recommendation that we employ uh benjamin aggie our gonzales as a maintenance custodial position make a motion all right mr guthrie mr ramsay mistaken i mr kirschner at pass 4-1 to hire benjamin angula the next item on the personnel packet and number five is extra pay position employment um we have individuals here that have expressed interest to fulfill vacancies we had the first one is eddie vega edward vega he as assistant baseball coach eddie graduated from high school here he's been living in morenci moved back last spring had a son in
school he graduated i think 2009 so i'll recommend eddie's assistant baseball coach last fall we had the resignation of a teacher and he that person was co-junior class sponsor the junior class is rather important jose villa senor one of our teachers has been carrying that by himself over the approaching of spring prom uh the work gets a little crazier and so one of our parents and an employee here marcelia munoz has agreed to be a junior class sponsor which i think is kind of i think it's advantageous to the male and female both with prom and stuff like that to help work on that i recommend the employment of eddie vegas assistant baseball coach and our cellulose as a co-class sponsor for the remaining school year club code junior class sponsor i apologize i hear
a motion i will second that miss dungeon i ms robinson aye mr guthrie all right um mr cruz nurse all right it passed four to one to hire edward vega and asella munoz positions of assisted baseball cook and co-junior class sponsors the next item is staff for spring intersection uh teachers as well as teachers aged prayer pros um if one of the things we've done in the past i don't know what dr richard foles wants to do is not we don't have we have less than five kids show up for class we kind of said well we gotta make sure you have five kids yeah this looks like a big number typically we have about 100 students show up for spring break for spring and fall intersection the persons that have submitted a letter of
interest and serving as teachers are married to beltran anna silvano chile aaron khan olivia garcia one teacher changed their mind uh mr rigadone richard reagano a new teacher that we hired last board meeting his name was arthur mangingo he's a math teacher i hope i didn't murder his name too much alice cadiz um rayleigh um remijo and april caballero pair pros that have expressed an interest to serve and most of these peripherals are working with special needs children as a one-on-one or someone to help those students alejandra figueroa sherry simpson gloria gonzalez munoz rafaela duran breezy nunez isabel silva crystal pacheco samuel hernandez and franny lopez many of those people we had to help students during spring intersection week after next [Music] motion i'll make my second day mr guthrie mr robinson all right miss
doc and i mr cruznerage all right okay that's 41. four to zero excuse me i've been saying foreign the last item on the personnel for this evening is a resignation of a coaching position uh kayla leone it was our co-head coach for girls softball uh submitted a letter reservation when we did the book we didn't have the letter yet uh she gave it to mr young co-athletic director um yesterday i wanted to today so we have have that as back up um so again uh kayla's we're not sure uh we've heard anybody kayla's requesting uh it's um of her resignation because of personal reasons your emotion maybe i'm seconded mr guthrie hi so you have somebody planned to take your place have an assistant coach we have a code a head coach alvarez and angelina's
out there so we could do something else because the season just off a good start we have two games so far we still have a number game to play so we've been doing pretty well too the first game they won one we won one and we lost one but i can't go to away and they have three in a row so we have to yeah [Music] now we do business approval of the modifications of the 2022-23 school gallery this is a simple procedure we made a mistake um administrators need to admit that but we had uh january 2nd monday as the first day back but just for staff for teachers to do that development and class work it does not impact the kids so we already had 180 days we can't do that it's a
federal holiday since january first new year's day is on sunday so we're just doing away with that that that holiday i'm sorry that in-service day the student's schedule remains the same since the board approved the the calendar i felt more comfortable how many folks approve this uh slight modification i make a motion second mr guthrie mr robinson aye ms duncan i mr cruz revenge pass before to zero the second item on business was um we uh i'd asked uh dr chabots to do a survey with staff and that was completed about two or three weeks ago i asked him to kind of review that with more of the students so probably two months ago i guess now already um the staff was given the survey and it was new to me as well some of
the interviews who someone doesn't last year and um so they were asked to take the survey just uh we had a discussion on one of our wednesdays to just be um you know very open-minded and honest about it and that um you know they'll interpret each question uh the way that the way that they're going to and then it'll be interpreted by administration with the help of the staff so um there was a week or so a timeline given during that time i must say we were hit extremely hard with covert and quarantined so um i don't know it's very difficult to to measure what what would be different this year than years past and the way they felt um just because it was such an interesting and unusual pandemic year and i guess last
year you know they really were here for a full year to to uh to be able to know what would make sense comparing year to year but um so we went over as a as a full staff and what i told them was my intent will be to meet with the advisory committee we have an advisory committee representing the elementary middle school high school and a couple of the grade levels are doubled up on that committee and we'd be able to break down each one and so that i would be more comfortable and understand but what does this really mean what does it look like as far as what can i do to uh make improvements um on the questions that are school-wide obviously but especially the ones that were for administration um so that
process is an ending report back to the staff uh here's here's what i've seen here's what we talked about as a committee and these are the things that you know i think that i would be able to improve on to to help with the survey here to at least be a reflection of what what everyone's thinking when they filled it out and have that discussion with the whole group as well so um i don't know if we want to go over each item or nothing okay or if you want to just take a look at it first no the board doesn't have a copy okay many of the things that i've seen in the past and doing these were very comparable you know there's never enough communication between administration and staff and when i was
a staff member and not an admin it was the same way i never felt there was enough communication and uh and so as admin i try to do as much as i can but obviously number two there's places that need need work on so the one at the top is last year and you think it's because of culver that people feel unsafe or whatever in school that's the thing i just don't i just don't know you know i don't have anything to base it on i mean the kova obviously has changed everybody's mindset about everything and being here at school with the quarantine not knowing one day to the other as a teacher and is my class going to be quarantined are we going to be contact tracing uh the next day am i going
to be covering somebody else's class i would think that for better for positive in some areas and not so much in others i would think that would uh that would impact the way you would answer a survey but then again the way it's stated safe or safe as far as outside influences safe as far as health um you guys interpret that question are we going to break any laws by answering if you are asked directly okay no i interpreted it when i answered this as my physical safety um so like my my chance of getting harmed by a student my chance of getting injured um i didn't think about covet at all when i was answering this nathan did i this after we had that national teacher shoot up day um and i thought about
like campus security and no cameras it's exactly what i led my answer to thank you move on to number three staff promotes educational success for all students and i didn't even i'm just kind of interested in where we were this year since i was representing this year that's selfish yeah i mean one of the things that we tried to use the same instruments but a little bit of this i'm not trying to make an excuse or anything a little bit like comparing apples to oranges because last year students were on campus one quarter of the year so they've been gone in a full year so this year we've had as dr gold just said we've had full students first time in a year we didn't even have hybrid and uh so um honeymoon period has
been over for some time for teachers first year uh they can be more worried and more in the past this year's hat the whole code thing anything in the press there's a lot of stress on children as well as staff and that that could mean this year comparing a full uh seven months but almost seven months almost three quarters of the year with last year to one quarter click on number four administration respects to students um that was the one that was rated most highly my staff and um this year this year uh i think it looks like it went down maybe slightly from last year but it's it's high compared to it was written more positively than than all the other ones yeah seventy percent with the top two this year seventy eight two
last year since no come on yes it'd be very similar so this one here really concerns me i mean staff is feeling like all the kids aren't being treated well 40 agree but it's down from everything is down from last year and i just question it says on number five nine highly disagree that's colored black but in the diagram there's no black so i think it's the light blue that's why this is the light blue that's what i figured just looking at the percentages okay not to speak out but that's that's what i equated yeah i think it's not coming over on the on the um on the powerpoint the color from here there like this one is cool did i remember from last year that this this was a paper done on paper it
was not good correct because it's not just given to the teachers excuse the classical staff it's given to uh the paraphrase maintenance give it to all the aides not all of them have an email address and not all of them have access to internet during the day it was given to all the secretaries now we all have email addresses that i can say okay only these email addresses are going to take it um but for the custodians the aids the parapros um they depart from the same thing the cafeteria staff not all of them have email officers so there would be no way that they couldn't send that link to somebody else and then take a staff survey so it had to be a paper for me that way it would be equal for everybody
to take you see where that junior high students doing school district in texas for being bullied the national story right now over i guess they believe this kid to the point that he thought about you know taking his life and so his family suits the school district do you think we have a bullying problem here my mind is not bullied it's hard to ask people like us we're not victims but independence it's a really tough question i'm sorry yeah well i think there's a definitely a problem with the definition of bullying because i'll talk to a parent who haven't seen all year and um they'll say their child is being bullied so i want all the information and then they have been called a name a couple times and where there's others that are teased
constantly we're having groups group meetings with these kids their names are given to our counselor um which you know for most of the year wasn't available at all and there's parent meetings and these sorts of things so there is a group mentality that's even stronger since we um since we've come back from being out being out the year across the nation so not just here and that group mentality and bullying it gets adults as well i'll tell you that most teachers and administrators here are fully my students i mean it happens like that it's really fascinating to uh to witness you start to correct or redirect a student five others walk up on you and they're defending them and raising their voices and it had nothing to do with what they're doing but that would
be bully behavior you know and so so that that that's interesting because it's it's it really is student i'm sure so if they're going to do it to adult they're doing it to each other i had a daughter that was moving to the point that we were going to pull her out of school and send her to my and i went to talk to the principal about it she told me that she would help her pack and um and so but luckily she started needing the meanest baddest football player on the campus and all that ended right i mean seriously all that in that point and she finished up her senior year and graduated but uh i know i know what it's like to have you know i had four children but she was the
one that got bullied right and so i know what that's like and it disrupted our entire family you know and to the point that i didn't know what to do you know and so on and that's very frustrating upsetting to a family so we're very sympathetic with them and empathetic and um you know try to do try to do we can begin you know we have sel classes we have professional development teachers on social emotional learning we we preach every day being respectful and responsible to all the student parents and students and um i have an employee that could be having a probably have a young child that pulled him from school because she said that he was being bullied yeah and this is this is one that was most one of the most concerning
to me because it was one of the lowest one of the worst scores um and obviously you know the direct impacts on the students um somebody doing everything again i'm sure there's more i mean we just have to keep keep working at it and listening we look for signs the stalker is especially with that middle school i mean because that's just their nature unfortunately it can be me and they want to they all want to be have friends so they get me together and the next week those people aren't together but they're me you know the others and that's just kind of the way middle school is but she she's always informing us and she works you know behind the scenes as well with those groups and it happens in fourth and fifth grade as
well you know i mean no one's safe anymore so um we know about it and uh and doing everything we can and like you said it doesn't just they're not just being bullied but their grades are going to go down it affects the family just every everything about uh the culture that they that they live in is uh it's gonna be suffering so yeah is there any particular program like bullying focused program that the school is using i know they're i don't know my name's about that i know that i know there are programs designed to uh address the names just um no it's not just for evolving whereas all the all the seo work that we do for social emotional learning um is supposed to help with that and kind of deter um those
that are wanting to be bullied and we have the paperwork in the office there for anyone that wants to report anything can always fill that out um you know i mean a full-time counselor with an office sure would be nice but they've taken those away at a lot of places and uh because they're they're that's what's effective you know it's like restorative discipline that takes people in time i mean the two things that we don't have you know the human resource in that time um because we're spreading really thin and we're like we're not any different than any everyone else that you read about your daughter or people that you talk to in education so do the best we can and uh and continually look for ways to make it better for sure and i
know the coach and we had some incidences right where one kid would play another kid and i had resources that teachers don't have of course you know what i mean on the field to prevent that from happening so you know um do you have do you use the coaches i mean do you when you have issues like that yeah especially with jose on campus even as uh the athletic director so the basketball coaches on campus but that throughout the character now um and i mean i've seen him going to classes and he asked permission he can go full kid and talk to him so not just about this but absentees and parties and things like that and we don't have a lot of coaches that are right here on campus and see it you know
here in person uh that's a good tool that we can utilize to admit that they are or it's not visible like like in the group in a group setting because they all have different process so one teacher may not see this and then they go to a completely different teacher with a completely different um you know form of students i know on the soccer field there's not really a lot of of getting on trailers they're really good about picking each other up about probably about six years ago we did have oh she can't do anything or whatever and then i think you were coaching at the time and we had a school we had to pull the world apart and say look we're not here to knock anybody down or we're not here we're all
here to learn it's a public school program or not but it's it's hard to it's hard to see in high school just because they have different conflicts with somebody in that season every single day in the same amount of process it's easier to see than the ten thousand kids functions a day and the student number may be way higher than this or maybe way lower that's how the students feel this is staff that's right and one thing the staff also sees that the public probably doesn't but if you have children you know that um that include um social media on this that's something when we think about lowering a lot i mean a lot of times for my generation that's the last thing i'm going to thank you like well did i see them do
that i see i'm not seeing all this stuff that's going on 24 7. writing the mean things and that they're saying to each other and have been pasting and that's that's what we would call it but they're they're moving photos around words around and changing sentences that they can do now that i mean just you know really be mean but this but as a staff administration we hear talking about it for sure that doesn't have to just happen here on campus but it's happening happening at home and you know a lot on campus they all have phones so that's that's another piece that's really frustrating and you know um it's hard for us to to handle except tell the parent if you don't want them reading it don't take it off get rid of their
facebook get rid of those uh groups chat groups cigarette and i mean that's that's kind of on you if you're gonna let your kid read all that to come to school we've got about 20 people that we can't really get a hold of right away and if they don't have that to read then that that goes away but you know that's that's a deep conversation but uh anyway um so if we just go through the other ones if you just want to kind of look and look at those top top two numbers and have someone raised anything else that sticks out to you we have to address it administration too is kind of that's another thing that i want to talk about the council with the leadership team that i have is like number 13
the administration communicates well with staff and wherever it says communication is that so the other thing was it's not clarified to me what is administration is that mr casey miss mercy because they have offices in the administration building which by certification they're not considered administrators here but they're quasi administrators and is that just dr dooley and i then really the two official administrators and where does that go how how wide is that um so that that was if that was clear it was like no they're talking about you the principal then i can look at and say okay so what do you want me to do to communicate better with the staff to communicate better with parents when decembers aren't as high as they should be and so that's what we'll be working on well
so i can get back to them and then on as even though we're losing a good handful of teachers for next year it's something that uh i can present beginning of the year is what we came up with last year everybody and here's where uh the committee and i talked about improvements that i can at least make and then and improvements that we as a staff need to make this staff survey says that we don't do a good job with our bullying's really bad and staff's responsibility as well to fix these things you know none of this is going to fall on the superintendent or just the principal i mean this you know this is a learning community so we're all involved in and being a solution to the problem or at least starting to
make away a little bit to primitive the areas that we thought were low anything else i think one of the things talked about and i'm glad things have changed because in my generation the only type of bullying is physical and we know that verbally following her healing class only then double sometimes so i think that's something's hard it's harder to to see we didn't watch students playing soccer out here during lunch hour or before school but when they're 15 20 yards away we can't do what they're saying to their i agree those of us that have kids no one was happy to have your child come home and talk about having clothes or uh by a colleague or by a another life here we certainly hope it's not happening adults you didn't send these to
us online right by that email actually no but i will okay yeah we'll go through them really fast i i don't know we'll make i appreciate sure i want to make sure you have a copy my goal will be to meet with that committee and come up with some clarification here's what i'm here's what they told me so this is what we'll look for next time that's this is what they meant by administration here what what bullying actually looks like here's what they came up with we had more conferences here so that might also help to put more time on it but it's just more priority yeah that's okay that's that that's kind of what i was thinking those those two things stand out from the communication and the fact that it's you can see
that there's [Music] because bad things happen to kids we can't say in one sentence we would appear because we want to support kids and look the other way when people are saying they're good they've got it on campus and it concerns me that teachers don't feel safe on campus i you know i mean that's that's something that i i'm concerned about you know and and the ladies are nice enough to share with us that it wasn't coleman that they thought about and they thought about the security issues and i know not really that over the years you've tried to find ways to close the campus and it's just impossible to do or too expensive to do and i understand we have an open campus all the time and i don't think i don't think about
that every day yeah and uh you know what could happen with an open campus but that does concern me and so you guys think there should be cameras and more police um and the walking animals are very often is things that can't be controlled i mean there were foxes in north carolina called playgrounds it's not like it's it's a foreign concept to have wild animals if you have a forested area or anything you know we have to have it rattle snakes [Music] i kill three in front of the locker room over here this summer and um canceling recess the rest of your god but you know talk about javelina we had them in practice every night the bad part is we scrimmaged them we just called nothing and they got from you from us practicing
them instead of talking about bullying is there a program that you can work with the youngster who is being bullied that knows how better to react to it i don't know if i made myself clear but sometimes there that they they uh make them themselves look picked on and some are all kinds of things they can do and the one who's bullying loves it because but if that person knew not how to do that so you'd have to work with both sides um three once a short one's going to say you just stopped people coming first call the second quarters and only only through that last month so cannot deal with it and he's paid off with a grant i talked to somebody at abe today that they wanted to talk to you or miss
mercy about renewing that grant so if that guy gets renewed then the council gets renewed but without it i think it it kind of goes away the next item um mr robertson asked us to put on his discussion i mean anyway this is dealing with board uh board handbook board procedures and i'll let her take it away yeah so this is i i put this booklet together and it's um it's not completed anywhere it's more of a template it's something that since i was a newborn member i thought it would be useful to have kind of a board member onboarding manual um but in my mind that evolved a little bit into more of a handbook um just like staff has and students have um so anyway this is a discussion there's no intent to
make any decisions but take a look at it if you have comments i'm happy to have comments criticism if you'd like to see anything in here please let me know the idea is to apply to just explain how operations work a bit and in some cases clarify some of the procedures so for example on page six um i just put together this one page on the pre-election of board offices we came to an agreement just before the last officer election about how that would go and i just documented it so it would be there for the next time and hopefully as we make decisions like that uh this book can grow and we can track track the decisions we make so um they can be sustained or they can be changed if we don't if
we want to change them yeah that's pretty good thank you for doing this yeah you're welcome and then on the last page that's part of nikki whaley's notes from the training that we did in december um and i'm hoping that not tonight but the next time we have space in the agenda to discuss the agenda request procedure um because we were there actually the three of us were at that training that eric eric and run were not so it was left a bit up in the air that's all thank you mrs robertson um do you see this and how soon would you want this if you didn't answer would you like this to be and i have adopted by the board of labor board meeting i would ultimately but i don't think there's any hurry
to make that happen i mean it's really like it's really just a template now i added some things in there um so there would be things in there but the idea is for it to be a living document that grows as one thing i want to point out i initially um initially i thought i'd like to have an onboarding book that had more information about the district um because i came in i really didn't know anything like how many students there were so many things i didn't know um so so that was the initial idea um and i thought it would be for board members but in considering it more and and i actually stole this idea idea from another school there's another school that called as a governance team team handbook not a board
handbook because it really is a partnership between the superintendent and the board how all this stuff happens we rely on youth um and so anyway that's open for that could be changed it can be renamed but i like the idea i like it yeah that's it that works so i put that in there no [Music] the last page oh way over here is there anyone who has a request for agenda item you do just the one that i just thought that's what there's no more business we need a motion to adjourn i make an abortion journey okay mr guthrie mr robinson hi miss duncan i mr cruiser marriage thank you
