shop school visiting didn't you? Not yet. Nope. Nope. There was something I did but I can't remember. Oh, yes. Yeah, we went to the Boys and Girls Club um dinner and it was very nice as usual. Yes, it was good one. Mrs. Williamson? Uh I went to the East Valley School Board Consortium at the beginning of the month. Um it's just a nice time for neighboring districts to get together and kind of see what's going on in the other schools. And then I also did attend the Boys and Girls Club fundraiser. Um and it's it's always just great to see and to to help the kids. Such a great thing. Yes. >> So, that was it. Mrs. Garcia? Oh, let's see. So, I missed the Boys and Girls Club event because we were doing a
fundraiser for an alumni that has cancer and so we raised 15,000 for him for his medical. Mhm. So, I'm glad that some of you guys got to go. This is the second year I missed that but that was a good turnout and I just wanted to kind of do a shout a shout out. It's kind of like the right place at the right time. So, I was leaving one of my properties that I manage and I just have to kind of share a funny story. So, the Smeds Academy had um I guess it would have just been like a fire drill practice. Right. And Mr. Betterman was out there and I was kind of stopped and it was just so cute because he was out there telling jokes and the kids were listening and I
was like if he only knew that I'm like 20 feet away from him watching him do like a great job with the kids. So, I just wanted to thank him for just he wasn't he didn't know anyone was watching him with the whole point was, and he was doing a really good job trying to get the kids aligned, so I wanted to thank him for doing that. And that's it. Very nice. Mrs. Lee? I went to the marathon dinner thing and um just got to talk to a bunch of community members and I also visited Four Peaks and got an update on what's going on in their campus. Great. Thank you. Okay, so for me, I just want to first say, I know we have a lot of veterans here tonight or people that are
maybe still in the military. I just want to say thank you for your service and if you're here, please stand. Let's give these guys a round of applause. Thank you so much for your service. Thank you. Also, I've attended the consortium with Miss um Williamson and Dr. Pappalardo and it is a great time to get together with other school board members from other districts and see what's going on. Um I also attended the Boys and Girls Club, which is an amazing organization and Connie Vandrell, who handles it every year, does an amazing job. I don't know how she does it. And I also like to give a shout out to Miss Pam Bradshaw here. She had a really nice idea. I was talking to her about our students of the year and she thought it
would be great to do something special for them this year. So, she went around and collected little gift cards for every student and I want to thank her, uh Vicky McLaughlin, who is also here, Mrs. Ross, who also contributed, um and Links Auto Body, who, if anybody knows Links, Bob there is amazing. He does a great job on the cars. He fixes my cars all the time. So, I want to thank all those people for doing this for our students of the month. So, at the end of the awards, Miss Bradshaw is was to hand you something, so just stay put right before pictures, okay? And that's all I got, guys. On to the super Oh, wait. We're going to do reports by Chief Callender. Um Imprints of Honor, come on up. Thank you. Good
evening, Madam President, board, staff, and everyone else here in attendance. Thank you so much for being here tonight. So, we had this incredible opportunity, and this started a few months ago, and probably four or five months ago at the beginning of the school year, to where we were asked to participate in an event called Imprints of Honor. So, Imprints of Honor has been going on for 15, almost 17 years now. And what it has was back then it was a handful of people here in Arizona that had said, "Hey, we're losing all of our veteran stories as they're the World War II veterans are starting to die off. And we really are losing those stories." And so, again, the these this group of people said, "Hey, we're going to do better, and let's start capturing
those those stories." So, they put to it. And years later, now we're in uh I think they just surpassed 250,000 stories. And what's really interesting is every year they collect all these stories, and they put them into a book, and this book is super thick. And what's really neat is that book is then presented every year to the veterans that are interviewed, the interviewer, which is usually uh a uh high schooler or to eighth grade, and then that story is then put into the um the national archives. And so, it's there in in memorial. And so, this year we participated. And what was really interesting, so they came to me and said, "Chief, we want to do this." And I said, "Perfect, let's do it. How many do you guys usually do for a beginning
program? They said, "Oh, five is a lot." And I said, "Got it." We did 13. So, what I did was I made it a civics project for all of my first years. And so, it was about 50 students, 50 cadets for NJROTC. And I broke them into teams of fives. For you military folks, that's a fire team, right? And so, we spread load the work and they had the opportunity to interview some incredible, incredible veterans, which we have a handful here tonight. And so, veterans like Phil Todd from Vietnam, Carey McDavid, who's one of our teachers, uh from Cold War and uh the Gulf War, right? And several other veterans. Some of them that would uh were a part of Vietnam, some that were a part of the Cold War and into um the first
Gulf War, and then others like myself and a handful of others that did Afghan- istan and Iraq. And so, it was a really awesome opportunity for these students to hear these stories firsthand and then to write some beautiful, beautiful pieces of work uh that I think uh Phil Todd's going to talk to you a little bit here in a little bit. So, anyways, that's what we've been up to along with a bazillion other things that our ROTC is up to. Uh but that was just this Sunday that we had the book dedication. And so, they had uh people uh that had to kind of put all this together. We had 40-plus veterans uh that were um that were there for it. And what was really neat was they had the ability to sign uh their
their stories in this book. And so, several of us were there. I think probably 10 of the 13 were there. And so, it was a really awesome opportunity. So, I could talk all night about it. I don't want to take your time. I apologize, but that's what we're doing. Uh moving forward, so as we're getting close to the end of the school year, our ROTC is still kicking. We're We still have a ton of stuff going on. Uh just this coming week, I think we've have uh six color guards that were were doing just just this coming week. Uh so, our our kids are always out there in the community. What's really neat about our unit so, each unit in the valley and across the state, they're known for doing something, whether it's physical fitness
or marksmanship, our kids, they're known for their community service and for going out and doing the right thing with whoever needs it. And so, again, you in the community have any opportunity that you'd love our kids out to, just let me know and we'll make it happen. So, thank you again. Appreciate it. Um quick question. Is Is that the book? So, this this is the book that was put together. And is it my understanding that they're for sale? They are. Absolutely. >> how much are they? 25 25? 25 bucks. >> Okay, cuz there's some people interested in purchasing. And how do we Who do we contact? And who do we Who do you see to >> if you come to me afterwards, uh we'll make it happen or shoot me an email. I'm sure my
email's somewhere on here. Uh if you just shoot me an email, we'll take a uh a a tally and then we'll we'll get them ordered. Super easy. >> Perfect. Thank you. Thank you very much. >> Thank you. Chief Calendar is doing an amazing job. Okay, moving on to the superintendent report, Dr. Pappalardo. >> Yep. Madam President, members of the board, members of the community, students and staff, it's been a busy month and I think May is going to get get a little bit busier. So, um starting off the month, we met with ASU and Blueprint to talk about our tutors. Um And as you know, Mrs. Fant was on TV because they're bringing visitors now from different places because of our the success of our program so early, which is really great. Um So, met
with Pinal County professional development team to plan for staff development for the 2026-2027 school year just a couple weeks ago. Um Also had a meeting with the chief of police, the fire, and the city manager, and the mayor uh to talk about things for coming for finishing this year and for 2026-2027 school year. Um Attended the Boys & Girls Club fundraiser. Um want to thank um Alexis for going and Cammie Cottrell and her significant other for coming with us as well, and Mayor Verna. Um attended the awards night at the high school last night. We raised The students earned, I should say, $2.6 million worth of scholarship. Amazing. >> Okay, that's amazing. We just got the Azella Some of the Azella results back. Jamie Burns' class had over 20% of her students become proficient. So,
these are English as a second language students, okay? That's amazing. Um Also attended about a week or so ago now, um with Mrs. Fant and Tara Williams. Tara Williams was our teacher of the year for the VFW as at her family was there. It was a great event. Very nice. And finally, we attended the Lost Dutchman banquet. Okay? So, now we'll start our staff and student recognition. All right. Okay? Oh, one more thing. Just so you know, on your on your dais, you have the AJHS everything you want to know about where you should be in the month of May. Okay? We're We're 1 day late for the scholarship night. All right, let's welcome up the American Well, who's the American Legion, right? And the AJ Elks Lodge? Not yet. Okay. Mr. David Johnson, could
you come up, please? There you are. Almost lost you back there. It's pretty hard to do given as tall as you are. You know, I met David um early this summer in July. You know, unbeknownst to me at the time is that um David is an Olympian, a bronze medalist. Wow. Right? Did you know that? >> No, I didn't. >> Yeah. See, all right. >> It's not that long ago. Okay. So, he's a very humble, soft-spoken, easy to get along with guy. Okay? Um so, you know, I knew I knew I was going to have to pick someone this year. So, I picked David. David will do anything that is asked. Okay? He's He is the compliance officer for special education, right? For those of you who don't know what that means, it means he
makes sure that all the IEPs are written well, and our kids are in compliance, and our teachers are doing what they need to do to serve those kids effectively. Okay? That's his job. And he substitutes in classrooms when we need someone. He goes to all school when we need someone. We can send him anywhere, anytime. He gladly does it, and he says, "I'm just glad for for experience to help." That's his motto. He just wants to help. You know, he demonstrates consistently a strong commitment to this district, to the kids here, to the adults here, to the parents here. Um he's a strong leader when it comes to coaching people and supporting the new educators we bring in in special education. He really does help to build capacity with our teams. He's He's calm, he's
positive, and he's He likes to work collaboratively with anyone he can. You may have seen him on some of our Facebook commercials when we were trying to revitalize the field for Cactus Canyon, right? He's the guy who says, "I used to be an Olympian." Just one of those kids, right? So, um So, one of his co-worker co-workers said, Patricia Mason, "Dave's unwavering unwavering dedication sets the standard of excellence for our special ed team. Whether managing compliance, mentoring students, or stepping into a classroom, the moment support is needed, he consistently goes above and beyond. This well-deserved recognition, his tireless commitment to student success, and his invaluable support for fellow educators." And his motto is, "I just want to help." That's That's what he says all the time. You know, David's dedication, consistency, and leadership are clearly
reflected in the impact he's had across the district. He not only meets expectation, but regularly exceeds them, serving as a dependable resource for staff and a strong advocate for students. You know, I had Alexis help get these highlights for me, so I appreciate it, Ms. Scott. We had you try to make it a surprise for him, but we couldn't do that, but we tried. He came close, right? Thank you very much, David. It's my pleasure. Congratulations. At this time, I'd like to invite the high school principal, Mrs. Ginn, to the podium. Good evening, Madam President, Governing Board, community members, and colleagues. It's good to be here with you tonight to share about two of our outstanding students of the year. Sometimes when I tell people that I'm a high school principal, they grimace. Just a
little bit like, "Ooh." But what they don't know is the amazing caliber of students that I get to see blossom in our high school and that I get to work with and I'm surrounded by. And just like David Johnson just said, it's not work when you're having fun every day, when you get to work with incredible kids like this. So, first I'm going to call up Luca Pape. COME ON UP. WOO. ALL RIGHT. SO, COUPLE OF statements from teachers. Luca Pape is a leader in the classroom and on the football field. His dedication, perseverance, and excellence in both academics and athletics serve as an inspiration to others. Luca is a respectful and responsible student. He is kind and helpful to his peers and has a strong work ethic. All right. Now, let's learn a little
bit. Last time when he was student of the month, we got to hear about some of his current things that were happening in his life. And so, now we're going to talk a little bit about leaving AJ in the future. Are you ready for it? Yeah, he's ready. All right. So, what has been an experience at Apache Junction High School? What has it meant to you and what moment stands out as the most impactful? Luca says, "My experience has been great. The coaches and teachers have positively impacted my life in many ways. The most impactful moments are the end of each school year because you might not have that same teacher again." All right. So, which teachers, staff members, and programs have influenced him the most during his time here? He says, "Mr. Yulin, Mr.
Walker, Coach Binkley, and football and wrestling have pushed him to be the best." And he's pretty good at all of those. What challenges have you faced in high school and how did you grow from those experiences? He says, "I have faced many experiences many challenges whether in sports or in the classroom, but it taught me just to keep trying and you will succeed." What are your plans for the future or what goals and aspirations are you excited to pursue? Luca says he is enlisted in the Marines, appropriate night for that, and he leaves on August 3rd. Thank you for your future service. All right. Congratulations. Well deserved. All right. Next, I'm going to call up Whitney Wynn. All right, Whitney, one of your teachers, Mr. Powell, says you are one of the best and favorite
students. You are smart, dedicated, and hard-working. She goes above and beyond what's asked of her in class, and that is very rare with students today. She has a bright future ahead of her. Miss Her English teacher said, "Whitney is committed to making the most of the opportunities presented to her. She goes above and beyond academic expectations." All right, now let's hear about your future. Are you ready to see what you wrote like 2 hours ago? Yeah. Okay, her experience at Apache Junction High School that has meant the most to her, most impactful moment at this school would be giving me lots of information that she would need for college. So, you're ready. She's ready. All right. Which teachers and staff or programs have influenced you the most in your time here? She says Mrs. Klein
has helped her many times with college and any questions she had. How has Apache Junction prepared you for your next steps after graduation? It has prepared me to be myself and always try my hardest. And then last, what is her What are her future plans? And I love this that she has one of her previous ceramics teachers here. She says, "My plans for the future are to go to ASU to become a ceramics teacher. I have always wanted to be a teacher and help others." So, when you're ready, come find us, okay? Congratulations, well-deserved. All right, I'd like to welcome up Ms. Melinda O'Barr, the principal for Cactus Canyon Junior High. Thank you, Madam President, board, family members, staff. I'm so excited to introduce our two students of the year. Um first one I'd like
to have up is Angie Rojas Padeo. I'm sad she wasn't able to come tonight, but she needs to be recognized. Um I want to to read a couple of comments from her teachers. And she is a high character individual who brings it every day. She shows high levels of leadership is and is unfailingly kind. She is thoughtful and demonstrates higher level thinking skills. Her involvement in multiple activities make Cactus Canyon a better place. That's from Mr. Conkey. And Angie is motivated, hard-working young lady. She's nice to her peers and always has a positive attitude. And that's from Coach Kim. And just a few things about Angie cuz if you meet Angie, she is a stellar student. Um and when you ask to have her describe herself, she says she's smart, she's determined, and she's a
leader. And she is that. Um and we asked her what her dream job was and her dream job is either a lawyer or a medical field, something in the medical field. So, I'm hoping to see great things from her and I'm going to watch her through high school and college cuz she is brilliant. So, congratulation Angie even though she's not here. Our second student of the year is Leon Friend. We have amazing things about Leon. So, a few of his teachers put some things in for him. He says Leon is a very good student who holds himself to a high level. He is also a highly creative individual and very good critical thinking skills. I appreciate his sense of humor and his ability to recognize a pun from Mr. Conkey. Uh Leon is an amazing
student. He came into advanced math this year skipping seventh grade math and ready to jump into eighth grade content. His ability to adapt and think through complex topics is going to get him so far. He asks questions when he struggles. He's not afraid to continue asking, which is such a golden trait. I'm so honored to have taught him this year and see how how far he will grow and even further. He has the brightest smile every day and never fails to make everyone laugh. I appreciate having him in my class every day from Ms. Romero. Um a few things about Leon. I did ask him what are three words that best describe him. He says kind, hopefully funny, and strange. I don't think you're strange. Um and then for a role model, he says my
brother because he's funny. Um and says he's strong and inspirational. And his dream job is to be a game developer. Make those math skills go into effect there. That works. But congratulations and thank you for being here tonight. Congratulations. And I'd like to welcome up Principal Kelly Fant. Fant. Sorry. Thank you Ms. Ober. Madam President, members of the board, Dr. Pappalardo, members of the community, colleagues, families. I am Kelly Fant. I'm the principal of Desert Vista. I'm honored to present two of Desert Vista's exceptional Mustangs tonight. Our first first Mustang, she's over there back in the corner, is fourth grader Evelyn Kocaizer. Come on up, Evelyn. I had the opportunity to speak with Evelyn again after she was selected as one of our students of the year and it was wonderful to hear her reflections.
I got some different information from her. She shared that her favorite thing about Desert Vista is her friends and her teachers. And having been here since kindergarten, she feels a strong connection to our school. Her favorite teacher is her current teacher, Miss Smith, because she describes her as both nice and fun. She appreciates that Miss Smith gives her opportunities to share her thinking and creates engaging lessons that make learning enjoyable. Math is still Evelyn's favorite subject, especially multiplication and division, which she finds both fun and manageable. Most kids don't like division, but she certainly does, which is fantastic. Looking ahead, she has big dreams. She would like to become president of the United States one day. Because she finds the role inspiring and she said she appreciates that you don't get bossed around. I mean,
that's fair. Nobody's going to tell you what to do cuz you're now at the top. As she prepares for next year, she's hoping to have a great teacher and learn new things and even begin learning how to play the violin. Outside of academics, she enjoys reading scary books and playing games like hide and seek. Miss Smith, her teacher, said Evelyn has truly blossomed this year, both academically and as a leader on campus. She consistently demonstrates what it means to lead by example, taking initiative and making thoughtful responsible choices in everything she does. Evelyn approaches her learning with determination and pride, always pushing herself to do her very best and striving for excellence in her work. Beyond her strong academics, she contributes positively to our school community through her kindness, leadership, and willingness to grow. She
is reflective, motivated, and continues to set high goals for herself. She has been an absolute joy to have this year and I am proud of all the things she has accomplished. I have no doubt that she will continue to do amazing things as she grows and takes on new challenges. Evelyn is a thoughtful and engaging student and we are proud to recognize her as one of our students of the year. Congratulations, Evelyn. And our second incredible Mustang is way in the back, too. This is third grader Javier Ocampo. Come on up, Javi. So, I had the opportunity again to talk to Javier and learn more about what he enjoys being part of Desert Vista. One of his favorite things about our school is his kind classmates and he really enjoys our outdoor style campus. His
favorite subjects are a tie. He couldn't choose just one. He likes both art and PE. He loves to draw both at school and at home and in PE, he likes running and playing games that Coach Rumble has taught them, especially Gaga ball and tetherball, which he claims he learned at the end of kindergarten, but I don't remember learning tetherball in kindergarten, but you never know. In his free time, he likes to draw, play on his phone, or help his mom. He also has three dogs at home. He has Max, Twinky, and Buddy. He enjoys reading the Plants vs. Zombies books and his favorite color is red. As you can see. When thinking about the future, he shared he's still exploring what he might want to do as an adult. He's considered becoming a teacher or
maybe an artist, but not quite sure yet. So, because he loves art so much, I talked to Ms. Reinhold, his art teacher, and she had this to say about you, Javi. He's a caring friend who consistently thinks of others. He brings a positive presence to the classroom and is often seen with a smile. He puts strong effort into his work and takes pride in creating a polished final product. Javier interacts well with his peers and is respectful in all settings. He takes responsibility for his actions without making excuses and listens carefully, following directions without needing frequent redirection. Javier is the kind of student who helps create a positive classroom environment, and we would love to see more students like him. Javier is a creative and thoughtful student, and we are proud to have him as
a part of our Desert Vista community and our student of the year. Congratulations, Javier. All right. Now, I'd like to bring up Ms. Broxma, principal of Four Peaks. Madam President, Governing Board, Dr. Pappalardo, families, community, and staff members, I am so privileged today to recognize um a student, one of our students, actually two, from Four Peaks Elementary. So, I'd like to start with recognizing Sapphire Howe. She is an exceptional fifth-grade student from Four Peaks who truly embodies our pillars of excellence. Each day, she demonstrates what it means to lead with integrity, show respect to others, and take responsibility for her learning and actions. Sapphire's commitment to doing her best both inside and outside the classroom sets a powerful example for her peers and reflects the strong positive culture we strive to build as a school
community. So, some words from people that care a lot about you. Starting with her homeroom teacher, Mr. Shaw. He says, "Sapphire represents the best of what our school has to offer through her integrity, excellence, and respect for others. She has gone through this year with a certain hunger, a need to prove herself, and she has done more than enough to convince those around her. Yet, she still maintains the innocence of her age and brings a playful attitude and humor that one can't help but feel energized by. Each day is made brighter with her presence and our class is so proud to have her serve as a champion for our school this year. Ms. Mortensen says that Sapphire has been such a sweet girl for the years I have known her. She has grown so much
in her mathematics this year and I can't be more proud of her. With her attention to detail and the willingness to continue to grow academically, she is poised to success succeed, excuse me, at anything she puts her mind to. Ms. Renzulli, her art teacher, shares that Sapphire is a rare gem. She has shown amazing qualities as a leader, a student, and an athlete. She is the type of person that if you hire her, she will get the job done. I am very fortunate to have someone like Sapphire in my art class because she really helps students organize their ideas on paper. She continues to be a beacon for those students who seem troubled and challenged with activities, always a cheerleader with things that can seem out of reach. Congratulations, Sapphire, for representing Four Peaks as
one of our students of the year. All right. Now, I'm privileged to introduce to you Cashton Trissellari. Cashton is a student that constantly goes above and beyond, not only in academic achievement but also in his character. He is kind, inclusive, and dependable, often stepping forward to support classmates and contribute to a welcoming environment for all. We are proud to celebrate his accomplishments and the positive impact Cashton has at Four Peaks Elementary. So, his teacher, Mr. Shaw, shares this. "I had I'd warned a bit about this Cashton fellow heading into the school year and he has done nothing but follow through as described. In the best of ways, of course. Cashton is unrelenting in performance in the at the highest levels. I have enjoyed watching his success as both the teacher and coach, continuing to be
amazed by his his consistency. Ever level-headed and humble, these admiral characteristics seem to come naturally. Um he's adds through phenomenal parenting, certainly. Okay. At that is left to be said is look out world, here he comes. Ms. Mortenson says, "I have had the pleasure of working with Cashton this year in advanced math. He is a determined young man with a bright educational future. Cashton always made sure to ask questions to clarify his math reasoning. He is the one student who has not only mastered his grade level math, but has also shown perfection for two years in a row on his state mathematics assessment receiving 100%. He received a perfect score for those very challenging assessments. Along with his academics, he is well-rounded student with sports, extracurricular activities, and a great sense of humor. He has
all the jokes." Ms. Renzulli shares, "Cashton has been a very successful student council president. He has paved a productive wave in getting things accomplished with student council events and activities. This young fellow is amazing across the board with his academics. He took second place with Battle of the Books and represented our school with pride at the public library. I am so proud of all the little and big accomplishments he has made this year. If you ever get to talk to him, he will definitely make you smile because he is very funny. So, congratulations Cashden for representing Four Peaks as our student of the year. Now, I'd like to invite Pat Smith, the principal principal at Peralta Trail. Thank you. Good evening, Madam President, Dr. Pappalardo, members of the board, family community members, colleagues. It is
my honor as the principal at Peralta Trail Elementary to recognize two amazing Bobcats. I apologize, I'm losing my voice today. Um our first student is a scholar who stands out. Her teacher unfortunately couldn't be here this evening. However, together myself and Mrs. LeClair, with her teacher, have amazing things to share with you and why we selected her as one of our Peralta Trail Elks students of the year. Sage Einsworth, come on up. Sage consistently goes above and beyond in striving for excellence in the classroom and serves as a wonderful model of respect, responsibility, and leadership for others. She is actively engaged in her learning, always seeking to get the most out of her education, and remains unwavering in her commitment to expanding her understanding of every concept she encounters. She embraces challenges with confidence and
is never afraid to ask questions to deepen her thinking. This year, Sage has proudly served as our student council treasurer, demonstrating outstanding leadership and setting a positive example for others across campus. She is a kind and inspiring leader who encourages those around her through both her actions and attitude. In addition, she is a dedicated member of our fifth grade math elite team and is preparing to compete in the district math bee, showcasing her strong academic drive and love for learning beyond the classroom. Sage's kindness, determination, and leadership make her truly deserving of Peralta Trails Elk Student of the Year Award. She is an inspiration to those around her and will continue to do great things as she moves on to sixth grade. We are incredibly proud of you, Sage, and all of your accomplishments at
Peralta Trail. Our next student that we've selected as one of our Peralta Trails Students of the Year is a fourth grader from Mr. Erkoff's class, and that is Carson Halsey. Come on up. Carsten is an outstanding fourth grade student who exemplifies determination, intelligence, and leadership both in the classroom and across our school campus. He consistently demonstrates mastery of core subjects and shows a strong willingness to challenge himself in all areas of learning. Always eager to share his ideas, seek new knowledge, and explore concepts beyond the classroom, Carsten approaches learning with curiosity and confidence. His talents, positive attitude, and strong work ethic have given him the tools to excel academically and will certainly continue to lead him to success in the future. Carsten is a true role model for his peers, setting high expectations for himself
and inspiring others through his dedication and character. Simply put, Carson is a great friend to others. He is encouraging and helps them whenever they need someone to be there for them. In addition to his academic achievements and kindness, Carson is a proud member of our fourth grade math elite team and is preparing to compete in the district math bee, showcasing his love for math and problem-solving. He got a perfect score on our school math bee. He is also a talented athlete who demonstrates not only skill, but out outstanding sportsmanship, integrity, and teamwork both on and off the field. Often, he is seen helping to resolve disputes and demonstrating positive outcomes through conflict resolution among peers. Carson's kindness, determination, and leadership make him truly deserving of Peralta Trail Elementary's Elk Student of the Year Award. We
are so proud to have him at Peralta Trail and know he will continue to accomplish great things in the years ahead. Congratulations to both of our Bobcats. At this time, I would like to invite up Mr. Bitterman, the principal at Superstition Mountain Classical Academy. Carson, is it okay to be clean up? Is clean up like the best player on the field? In the batting lineup? Just say yes. Yes, thank you. Thank you, Carson. Uh Madam President, members of the board, community, families, um at Superstition Mountain Classical Academy, the student of the year is thoughtfully selected based on a student's commitment to both character and scholarship. Students chosen for this recognition consistently exhibit the core virtues of temperance, fortitude, justice, and prudence, while also demonstrating the strong friendship and responsibility within the school community. Our first
recipient I would like to recognize comes from Miss Rice 2-3 combo class, Carter Demery. This is from your teacher. Carter is truly an outstanding student whose kindness and willingness to help others makes her shine in the classroom. She consistently goes out of her way to support me and her classmates, often stepping in without being asked to lend a hand or offer encouragement. Her helpful nature creates a positive and welcoming environment where everyone feels supported. Carter is dependable, responsible, and always strives to do her best in everything she takes on. She takes pride in her work and approaches each day with a positive attitude, a strong sense of responsibility. In addition to her academic efforts, Carter shows a great empathy and respect towards others, making her a wonderful role model. Her selflessness, leadership, and caring spirit
make her incredibly deserving of the student of the year honor. Congratulations. Third grade is killing it. Our second student, also from Miss Rice's class, is Santiel Ornelas Romero. Santiel is an exceptional student who consistently demonstrates a strong work ethic and determination in everything he does. He takes pride in his work and always puts forth his best effort, even when faced with challenges. Santiel is very athletic, and he brings that same energy, a level of energy, discipline, and perseverance into the classroom each day. He is motivated to improve, pushes himself to grow, and never gives up easily. Beyond his personal achievements, Santiel is respectful, responsive responsible, and a positive influence on those around him. He leads by example through his actions and attitude, showing others what it means to work hard and stay focused. Santiel's dedication,
resilience, and character make him truly deserving of the student of the year recognition. Congratulations, Santiel. Thank you. You can go back one. You're a little taller, so you can go back one. >> Congratulations. We're going to take a 5-minute break. >> Mhm. >> We're going to have an AJ Library update. Hi there. Good evening, Madam President, board members, Superintendent Pappalardo, parents, students, and staff. My name is Megan Carbineer. I'm the Outreach Librarian at Apache Junction Public Library, and I just want to thank you for having me this evening. I'm going to share just a couple updates about our public library. Um, I just always want to give a reminder that all students in AJUSD have a student library card automatically with the public library. So, they just tell us their student ID number, and they
can check out three books or audiobooks with us, and uh they don't have to do anything. It's totally free. It's automatic. And they can also check out a study room, reserve a study room to do studying at the library. They can check out a Wi-Fi hotspot if they don't have access to internet. We also have online tutoring, and they log onto that with the same student ID number, and that tutoring is from 2:00 to 11:00 every day in a variety of subjects. And so, we also have online research and databases and computers. All of that is access at the library, and the students have automatic access with their student library card. Um, I also just want to mention we have a couple events happening this week, and we're having a chess tournament on Saturday, and
it's for all ages. And we are having a grad cap decorating night tomorrow. So, if you know any seniors that want to decorate their cap, we have all the supplies, and it's provided for free, and they can decorate their grad cap uh for some fun. And one of the big reasons I wanted to come was to talk about our summer reading program. So every year we have summer reading. Last year we had over 2,000 participants, which was awesome. And we hope to have even more this year and the theme is called Unearth a Story and so all ages from birth to adult can get prizes for reading throughout the summer and we have lots of great events and just fun stuff happening and it's a great incentive for kids to read during the summer. So
all of these little flyers I have right by the table or right by the back door but on the table. So please take one with you. We're also having a really cool event coming up the following week. We're calling it Birds of Liberty and we're going to have a bald eagle at the library and it's for the America 250. We have a grant that we've gotten through the state library and so we're going to have different birds of prey but specifically the bald eagle. So we hope you'll come to that. It's on May 7th at 5:30. I have also out there calendars and that event is on the calendar for May. So please grab one of those and I want to mention anybody who lives or works in Apache Junction gets a free full access
card with us where you can check out 30 items. You have online resources and everything else I mentioned, our study rooms, computers. So please come get a free library card even if you don't live here but maybe you work for the school district. And please take any of the flyers I mentioned. I also have my card on the table as you go. So thank you. Thank you, Megan. >> Megan. All right, we are moving on to item three, consent agenda. Would somebody like to make a motion on the consent agenda? Madam President, I'd like to make a motion to approve the consent agenda. We have a motion. Would somebody like to second? Second. Mrs. Ross seconds. Mrs. Ross? >> Yes. Mrs. Williamson? Yes. >> Mrs. Garcia? Yes. Mrs. Lane? Yes. And on the asset motion
passes 5 to 0. On to public comments. I'm going to read a quick announcement. Speakers will have 3 minutes to speak so that everyone who wishes to speak will have the opportunity per ARS 38-43102H prohibits the governing board from discussing items which are not on the agenda. If the item you are addressing is not on the agenda, please do not expect the board to answer questions or discuss the issue with you. Comments need to be district related. Thank you. We will begin with Phil Todd. Come on up. I only need about 42 minutes. And I can probably do that. Superintendent Pappalardo, President Kimball, board members, staff employees, family and friends. In November 25, President Kimball contacted me and asked if I would speak with the AJUSD junior ROTC about my military service. They wanted to
interview veterans and participate in a fundraising event with an organization entitled Imprints of Honor. The stories would be published in a book and sold to make money. A copy would be placed in the Liberty in the Library of Congress for future reference. I agreed and came to the school and was interviewed interviewed by Fire Team 6. I didn't know who was in Fire Team 6, but we have one representative here. And Ry- Rylan Galvez, right? Galvez? The rest of his team apparently moved out of the school. Is that right? They dropped it even though they didn't want to be in Oh, okay. Dropped it. Okay. Um In January of '26 I received the first draft and there was very few changes were made. Last Sunday my wife, my commander-in-chief, and I attended the book signing
ceremony in Scottsdale. We learned that Frank White and Mike and Mike Overmyer were also interviewed by the cadets. The three of us were part of the five Arizona veterans that were flown to Washington, D.C. to participate in the wreath laying ceremony at the Vietnam Wall for the 50th anniversary of the treaty signing that ended the war. Other veterans interviewed by Fire Team 6 were Noah Worley, uh, a welding teacher here, and Carey McDavid. He was here. He's a science teacher. Steven Stapleton, a history teacher. Gina Salazar, director or district director of business. Hunter, uh, Callender. Uh, Dennis Parley, a Vietnam veteran. John Schmitkin, right? Uh, Vietnam veteran. And Carl Nafziger, uh, currently in the service. I watched I have watched the ROTC honor guard perform at several wreath laying events honoring deceased veterans at Mountain
View Cemetery. AJUSD and the parents of the junior ROTC cadets should be very proud of what these young men and women do to honor the veterans. I also attended the 2026 changing of the guard and award ceremony at your auditorium. High grades, teamwork, and leadership were a major part of the program. Your ROTC instructors have done an outstanding job. On January 4th of 2022, but We'll give you grace. You can finish the sentence. 2022. Go ahead. In January 2022, we were honored to have some of the former cadets and instructor come to our home at 7:00 in the morning to help set up and attend the French Legion of Honor award presented to Mr. Garland James by the French Ambassador to the United States. Mr. James had landed at Normandy on D-Day and was being
honored for his service. I know that available money is very limited, but the 100-plus cadets are learning so many things that are not taught by Evette. Leadership, responsibility, teamwork, pride, and caring for just are just a few items that will help them wherever they go and whatever they do. Please continue to support the Junior ROTC program. Thank you, Mr. Todd, and thank you for YOUR SERVICE. ALL RIGHT. KIM THURMBACK, come on up. Thank you. Good evening. Uh John and I attended the scholarship presentation last night, and I was blown away. This school district has absolutely surpassed anything I could have expected out of it. And even though you guys missed the presentation last night, you're doing a good job. Thank you. The one thing that I fault everybody for anymore is communication. We don't communicate
all of the excellence to the community. Last night you presented to uh freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior 4.0 students. These weren't just A and B students. These were 4.0 students. You had 11% of your freshman class receive 4.0 awards. Out of 150 kids, that's great. That was 17 kids. Uh your sophomore class had 8% at 14 kids for 165 students in that class. Your juniors were 18 of 161 at 11%, and your seniors at 181 seniors were 10%. That's remarkable. You went on to have 72 scholarship recipients, or 40% of the senior class. Your community is backing you by 20 scholarships just in your local community, who I think we could get more support out of really. You had 20 uh from Pinellas County. You had five universities and colleges handing out scholarships, and two
of the military. As Dr. Pappalardo said, that was 2.6 million dollars given to your school. Now, let's figure out a way to get other monies into the school corporation. And John and I are fully fully prepared to do what you need for us to do to spread the word to work on a bond issue so we can get some things done around these schools. But we're more than happy to help and I thank you for doing an excellent job in promoting education to the schools. And I'm sure the charter schools can't touch what you guys are doing. So, thank you. Thank you, Kim. Thank you. THAT WAS SO SWEET. ALL RIGHT, MOVING ON to information and discussion items. 5.1 Center for High School Success Agreements, Mrs. Verna. Good evening, Madam President, board members, Dr. Pappalardo,
community staff, and students. Um, we have the opportunity through the ninth grade success grant that we were awarded to work with this group called the Center for High School Success. So, in order to have this grant, we have to have a partner that has shown that they can produce some great things out of ninth graders so that they're on track to graduate. So, this is our agreement with them. They can provide professional development for our teachers in ninth grade, help them achieve academic success with our students so that those graduations are 100% and those scholarships keep going up and up and up. So, it's part of our grant that we received to partner with this group. Any questions you might have? Any questions, Mrs. Ross? Mrs. Williamson? No. Mrs. Garcia? No questions. Mrs. Lane? No
questions. Dr. Pappalardo, is there anything you want to add? You know, we live in a time right now with high schools and most kids, right? That, um, if we experience failure early, we don't persist. Okay? So, we need help with that. We need to have our kids become persistent. We need to have a way to motivate them when they believe they're in failure. Okay? Um so, this partnership is very important for motivation, for staff development, for our educators, and more importantly to keep track and communicate with us to help us stay on course so that we can get 100% graduation rate out of our ninth grade, and hopefully get more kids into trade and/or college or into becoming interpreters. Okay? That's what we're looking for. Sounds great. Thank you. Thank you, Ms. Verna. All right.
We're moving on to action item 6.1, approval of the High-Tech Network and Security Solutions LLC agreement in the amount of $49,000 and $9.09 annually for 5 years. Any questions on that? We discussed this at the work session. Um Dr. Pappalardo, was there anything you wanted um discuss on the High-Tech network security? Well, as you know, what this does for us, it takes away the servers, right? The server issue. It's all in the cloud. We don't end up replacing it anymore. So, over time, you save money even though you have the outlay right now. Okay. >> Right. So, it's more reliable. You're not dependent on our server being kept up. Right. Okay. And so, we don't have to purchase any servers. That's correct. So, we save money doing that. Yeah. Any questions? Um Mrs. Ross? No.
Mrs. Williamson? No. Mrs. Garcia? No question. Mrs. Lane? No questions. All right. Would somebody like to make a motion? Madam President, like to make a motion to approve the High-Tech Network and Security Solutions LLC agreement in the amount of $49,000 $19.09 annually for 5 years. We have a motion. Would somebody like to second? Second. Mrs. Ross seconds. Mrs. Ross? Yes. Mrs. Williamson? Yes. Mrs. Garcia? Yes. Mrs. Lane? Yes. Unanimous. The motion passes 5 to 0. 6.2 approval of the Zayo Education Communication Service Agreement in the amount of $2,583.21 monthly fee for 3-year contract. Dr. Pappalardo? So, as we discussed in the work session, >> Right. your phones are going to stop working sometime next fall. So, it's not like they can be upgraded. They can't. So, this is the cheapest option. Um I talked with
Mrs. Williams about the shipping fee that's in there earlier this afternoon. Just So, would you look at that? You know, it's not that it's gold. That's shipping. But, there's about 400 phones that are shipping. So, that's the estimated cost for that weight. Okay. Any questions on that, Mrs. Ross? No. Mrs. Williamson? No. My question was on the shipping. So. Well, that was a good question because I looked at So, you think that they would give us free shipping for a school district? Yeah. And I mean, if it were me, I would probably still ask that. >> Right. It's not Amazon. Mrs. Garcia, any questions? That That was my question, too. Like, did we try? Did we ask them? Yeah. Um they we are in communication with them. So, this is an estimate, but they think
this is their best price for shipping. I'm sorry. They did reduce it. They did reduce it. Should be, right? >> hear you. Yes, they did reduce the price originally. This is what they say their best estimate is now. Okay. So, what was more? Where are they coming from? Like Well, probably China. Yeah. I'm just going to check. That's probably where it's coming from. It just seems really high. I know. Mrs. Lane, any questions? No, that was my question, too. It was like the shipping is just as much as the product, so it is I'll go pick it up for $2,000. >> Okay. No, that was just my question. I could use $2,000 in gas to pick it up. Okay. And Dr. Poplar, I just want to I think in the work session when we were
discussing it, I think the cost is kind of comparable. It is. So, it's not going to cost us any more. Right. It's comparable to what it was. Okay. All right. Thank you. Is it possible to see that breakdown that I was asking you about earlier today cuz it says in number eight that there's like a breakdown. We We can contact him and see what they will send us. Okay, I would like to see the breakdown of that shipping. Do you want to see it prior to making a motion or Like that's what I'm asking is if I mean if we approve this, what is like what is Well, we still can get you the breakdown if you approve it. Right. But if we approve it, are we approving it at this price or >> You
You will be able to go back and negotiate that price. But what happens if the price gets lower? That's better. Well, if they get lower, they'll give us a lower price. >> No, I meant do we have to re-approve it? No, because you already approved a price. So, if they As long as it's not higher. Right. It can't go higher. We're We're not going to do that. Yeah, I think we should see what the breakdown is cuz it says like number eight that there's like a list of the breakdown. Just like to see what that looks like. So, we'll get it for you. Thank you. Okay, and Dr. Page, just email it out to everyone so we can all get a copy. Okay. All right, would somebody like to make a motion to approve this
AO education communication service agreement? Madam President, I'd like to make a motion to approve this AO education communication service agreement in the amount of $2,583.21 for the monthly fee with a 3-year contract. We have a motion, would somebody like to second? Second. Mrs. Ross seconds. Mrs. Ross? >> Yes. >> Mrs. Williamson? Yes. >> Mrs. Garcia? >> Yes. >> Mrs. Lane? >> Yes. >> And on the motion, passes 5 to 0. On to item 6.3, approval of the Prospector Pride Football Booster. Now, we talked about this in the work session. This is something that we have to do for um any new booster clubs um coming up for the new school year. Any other questions on this, Mrs. Ross? No. Mrs. Williamson? No. Mrs. Garcia? No. Mrs. Lane? My question is, we didn't have one before?
The football team never had a We had a touchdown club and we resigned that. This is a new one. Okay. New booster. Okay. Okay, that answers my question. >> Yeah. Okay, that was getting ahead. All right. Dr. Popoola, is there anything you want to add on this or >> I think um our accountability with booster clubs is improving greatly. >> Yes. I think Mr. Yates has done a great job with Ms. Guin to get this rolling in the right direction. So, I think there'll be updates as we go cuz we'll we'll find different things, but I think it's much improved over the last 3 years. >> I agree with that. >> Agreed. Totally agree. All right. Would somebody like to make a motion on the Prospector Pride Football Booster? Madam President, I'd like to make
a motion to approve the Prospector Pride Football Booster. We have a motion, would somebody like to second? Second. >> Mrs. Ross seconds. Mrs. Ross? >> Yes. >> Mrs. Williamson? Yes. >> Mrs. Garcia? >> Yes. >> Mrs. Lane? >> Yes. >> And our motion motion passes 5 to 0. On to item 6.4, approval of the athletics and activities club extracurricular supplemental pays for 2026-2027 school year. So, we went over the stipend schedule. Has not changed, looks like, in the last 4 years or so. Um Dr. Poplar, is anything you want to add on that? No, just like we said in the work session, this is the same as before. Right. >> Right. I think there was only one change for the $600. >> Yes, there was one change that we made for the elementaries to make
it a $600 stipend, so we didn't have to stop the clubs once they ran out of money. Right. Based on an hourly rate. Makes sense. Yep. Any questions on that, Mrs. Ross? No. No. Mrs. Williamson? Uh I don't think so. Did What Did we ask at the work session what those numbers meant? I thought that came up. Yeah, it did, but I wasn't people >> answer on that? It was a percentage. It's a percent. Okay. Right. Okay. >> Right. That's That was hourly. Mrs. Garcia, any questions? Uh no questions. The only thing that I asked is that we look at it for future and try to evaluate and increase. Mhm. Yes. Mrs. Lane, any questions? >> No questions. All right. Would someone like to make a motion on the athletics and activities club extracurricular supplemental
pay? Madam President, I'd like to make a motion to approve the athletic and activities club extracurricular supplement pays for 2026-2027 school year. We have a motion. Would someone like to second? Second. >> Mrs. Ross seconds. Mrs. Ross? >> Yes. Mrs. Williamson? Yes. >> Mrs. Garcia? Yes. Mrs. Lane? Yes. And our motion motion passes 5 to 0. On to 6.5, approval of the Arizona Department of Education Intergovernmental Agreement number CTRO80245 as presented. Dr. Pappalardo? Okay, so we're bringing this back again. Okay, you guys already approved this once, but we need to straighten out the language. Um in terms of that, what I'm trying to say to you is that when this first came out, ADE contacted GenTech and told them that they would have the money directly to them. That's not the case. The money will
come to us. GenTech's going to invoice us, and then we're going to pay for it. Okay. >> Okay. So, that's why it's bringing back so we straighten the record cuz there was a misunderstanding between GenTech and AT- ADE. GenTech thought they were getting the money. Okay. So, it's really the money is coming to the district and then we have to >> Right. They will invoice us and we will pay them like we're paying them now. >> Okay. Great. Yep. Any other questions on that, Mrs. Ross? No. Mrs. Williamson, any questions? >> No. Mrs. Garcia? No questions. >> Mrs. Lane? No questions. All right, would someone like to make a motion? Madam President, I'd like to make a motion to approve the Arizona Department of Education or education intergovernmental agreement number CTR080245 as presented. We have
a motion, would someone like to second? Second. Mrs. Ross seconds. Mrs. Ross? Yes. Mrs. Williamson? Yes. >> Mrs. Garcia? Yes. Mrs. Lane? Yes. And on the asset motion passes 5 to 0. On to 6.6, approval of an opening Apache Junction Educational Center School through Graduation Solutions Program for the 2026-2027 school year. So, we talked about this at the work session. Dr. Pappalardo, do you have anything to give us on this? >> about this MOU before. Mhm. Okay. So, what the state ADE state finance says is we have to have a name for it. So, that's why we're bringing it back to have it the high school the AJ Educational Center, okay. >> Okay. Um whether or not that opens in 2026 2027 right now is an open question as we're in negotiations with them. And
so we're not quite where we want to be. Okay. We're close but we're not there yet, okay? Still have some concerns. We have a meeting with them coming up to iron out those concerns before we go ahead and do that, okay? >> Okay. So this approval is just basically to adopt the name. >> adopt the name, that's correct. Okay. Any questions, Mrs. Ross? No. Mrs. Williamson? No. Mrs. Garcia? No questions. Mrs. Lane? No questions. I have no questions. Someone would like to make a motion? Madam President, I'd like to make a motion to approve the Apalachee Educational program. Do I need to add You have to say the year. Go ahead. What What did you say, Mrs. Crumel? The year, the school year. Oh, and this is for next year? Mhm. 2026 2027? Correct. Okay.
Need you to add it. Yeah. All right, Mrs. Garcia made a motion. Would somebody like to second? Second. Mrs. Ross seconds. Mrs. Ross? >> Yes. Mrs. Williamson? Yes. >> Mrs. Garcia? Yes. Mrs. Lane? Yes. And I'm a yes. The motion passes 5 to 0. On to 6.7, approval of the Center for High School Success Agreement. We talked about this also at the work session. Um Dr. Pappalardo, do you want to give us a brief rundown? >> Yeah, so Ms. Burnett just brought this back to you for that 93,000 plus money. Right. That we're going to bring this corporation in to help us with our data, demographics, all that to keep students on track and staff development, okay? I think it's great. >> next 5 years, okay? That sounds amazing. >> And then she that we
get 22,000, we keep 20% of the money for to help us manage that. Okay? Mrs. Ross, any questions on that? No. Mrs. Williamson, any questions? I know I think all my questions were cleared up earlier today. I had just um questioned why the first year was so much less than the other years, but I was told that's cuz that first year is a partial All right. Right. So, that helped there. Okay. Mrs. Garcia, any questions? >> I also had that question, so could you just explain it to the board, Dr. Pappalardo? >> Yeah, so it's based on when with the grant is um granted to us, right? So, it's prorated. Yeah, the grant is prorated, right? So, this 5,000 help us get set up for the coming rest of the years of this grant, okay?
So, that they have time for planning and getting materials they need for the start of the 26 27 school year in the ninth grade cohort, okay? Got it. Yeah, and I just wanted to make sure that they get the um support that they need, so they're not their workload isn't uh overwhelming. Exactly. Exactly. Yep. That was it. Mrs. Garcia, any other questions? Uh no questions. >> Mrs. Lane? No. No questions. All right. Someone like to make a motion? Madam President, I'd like to make a motion to approve the Center for High School Success Agreement for the 2026-2027 school year. We have a motion. Would someone like to second? Second. Mrs. Ross? Yes. Mrs. Williamson? Yes. Mrs. Garcia? Yes. Mrs. Lane? Yes. And I'm a yes, the motion passes 5 to 0. Monetary request for future
agenda items, anyone? Uh Madam President, do we need a motion to go into executive session before we do that, or no? Are we taking that Was that off? That's off. >> That's off. Okay. Yeah, that's an old agenda that we had in there. Yeah. I was like, where is that? Sorry, this is I printed this and then I was like, you threw me for a loop for a second. Okay. Um Madam President, I'd like to do add the agenda for the climate culture survey to go over that in a work session. Okay. Anyone else? Nope. I'm just going to add to the agenda on policy update. I think we're going to over the summer just start reviewing our policies for especially for new board members to um just refresh old board members like myself and
new board members that have not had the opportunity to go through all the policies. So, we'll do small batches at a time. Mrs. Lindauer, anything? Nope. Nope. All right. Would someone like to make a motion to adjourn? Madam President, I'd like to make a motion to adjourn. We have a motion. Would someone like to second? Second. >> Mrs. Ross seconds. Mrs. Ross? >> Yes. Mrs. Williamson? Yes. >> Mrs. Garcia? Yes. >> Mrs. Lindauer? >> Yes. >> And on my side, motion passes five to zero. We are adjourned. Okay, Dr. King.
