001Paul Saunders. I'm principal for the ASDB Tucson campus. We are here this morning for our high school honors assembly to recognize the outstanding achievements of our students here. So, I would like to introduce Sherry Brown to the stage. This is Sherry Brown making her way from the seating in the auditorium. She's now behind the podium. Can you hear me? Okay, great. Good morning, everyone. It's going to be an exciting day. It's just the beginning, and I'm very excited to kick off the award ceremony with my favorite scholarship, the Sunrise Lions Club scholarship. And the Sunrise Lions Club has been providing scholarship for ASDB students for over 30 years. And due to the declining number of members, the club closed, but because they had such a fond place in their hearts for ASDB students, they gave
002their funds for us to continue giving the scholarship. And when someone from the Lions Club came, they always wore their Lions Club vests with all their pins and everything. So, um when my dad passed away and my sisters asked what to do with my dad's Lions Club hat cuz he was a Lions Club member in Dover, New Jersey. I have this hat. It's purple and orange, and it has some pins stuck on it, and it says Lions Club of Dover, New Jersey, Lou Brown, past president, 1963-64. So, that's my dad. Let him rest in peace. He'll be happy to be here with me. So, I'm putting the hat on for the award in the spirit of the Lions Club. And this award goes to a student who's continuing their education, um post-secondary training. And the
003recipient of the award is quite a a doer, I would say the least. Since being a student at ASDB has involved been involved in many many plays, many chorus performances, has been involved every summer for the last 3 years and will be doing this summer the summer camps that's offered through vocational rehabilitation. The student attended Colorado Center for the Blind the foundation um for blind children and the Southern Arizona Southern Arizona Association for the Visually Impaired um SAVVI here in Tucson. And the student will be attending the college prep program up at ASU and which is perfect because this student will be attending ASU to study to become a TVI, teacher of the visually impaired. So, without further ado, I would like to announce this scholarship award of $2,000 to Jazmine Martinez Guzman. Come on
004down, Jazmine. All right, Jazmine. Although you'll be a Sun Devil, us wildcats will still cheer you on. Jasmine is making her way on stage from the seating in the auditorium. Waiting to greet her on stage again are principal Paul Saunders and Sherry Brown. And Sherry Brown presents her with her official certificate of scholarship. And with that, Jasmine's going to return back to her seat. Now back to Paul Saunders. Thank you so much, Sherry. Our next award I'm going to introduce Henry Saunders to present to our student. This Henry Sanders now behind the podium. Hello, good morning. My name is Henry Sanders. I have the honor of presenting the Seen Chan Chen Siao Chao scholarship. This scholarship is for a high school three high school students that have excellent academic achievement. The first award goes to
005Nicholas Cabral. The next award goes to Von Dewayne. Final award goes to Amari Chaney. First on stage is Nikki Cabral followed by Von Dewayne and now Amari Amari Chaney. It's worth noting that Nikki's wearing a t-shirt that reads "I'm in Gallaudet University." And Amari is wearing a Gallaudet University hoodie. These are three recipients that received the scholarship. Congratulations. Once again, congratulations to you three. Each of the three students has now received their official certificate of scholarship and college check. They're now making their way off stage together. Stage right, back into their seats in the auditorium. Now, this is Paul Saunders. Thank you so much, Henry. The next person to present an award will be Esther Marie Hillman. Please come to the stage. This is Esther Marie coming in from her seating in the auditorium. Coming
006up stage left. Can we also please have David Funkus and Harold Campbell on standby for the next awards? Thank you. I've never been one that actually likes to stand behind a podium. So, you have to forgive me. I'm a very proud optimist and I can stand here and tell you the Optimist give out 3/4 of a million dollars worth of scholarships every year. But, I would rather show you the impact of the Optimist have made right here at this school. How many of you guys here in the audience have ever gone to the Braille Olympics in LA? Gone to the the Hollywood um theater. Stand up. Stand up if you have If you've made that trip to California from elementary school on up. That's a That's an event totally paid for by the Optimist in
007California and the transportation and stuff that gets you guys there and your snacks is often provided by local Optimist clubs. How many of you guys have tra- attended uh track and field at the high school level? Can I get my my my track athletes to stand up? All of those All of those snacks that you guys get, the drinks you get, um quite often your shoes, your awards, all that kind of stuff is provided by the Optimist. How many of you in both the the School of the Blind and School of the Deaf have ever received student of the month? A handful of students that were invited for given given a $100 scholarship right there in your in your hands along with lunch for you and your teacher. How many of you guys have attended
008the leading dog program the leader dog program getting training to work with a dog when you get older? A lot of that is provided by the um Abilities Optimist Club. How many of you guys have supported the Camp Abilities during the summer? I have a few more hands going up. students but they Again, many of the volunteers working with you have been Optimist and a midst of the funding for that comes from Optimist. How many of you guys have attended the basketball camp here um during the summer? With Gerald Brown. Southwest Deaf Optimist Club puts that on. That's Optimist members from California, Utah, Nevada, and Tucson, Phoenix that put that on. And the Pablo Optimist Spirit Club it provides you guys with breakfast, lunch, and dinner at that camp every year. Been doing that for
00917 years and I only know that because Gerald and Letty's daughter is 17 now and we've been doing it since she was born. What got me involved with the Optimist in this school is the communication contest for the deaf and hard of hearing. When I started that there was a $1,500 scholarship that was going ungiven. And I thought that was a shame. So, I started doing that. One of my early winners is up here sitting down who beat out her her brother who was a senior, beat him out as a freshman. How many of you guys would stand up if you've been a recipient of that? I know Brian's in the audience. I don't know if Ashley, your basketball, volleyball coach. Um J- uh junior was a winner was a winner of the award. So,
010many of your past coaches and a lot of your staff and stuff here have been winners of that in the future. That scholarship now gives out $4,000 every year and uh or awards $4,000 for the scholarships every year to a student with at least a 40-decibel hearing loss. Um so, students compete from all over the state of Arizona for that. And it's open to anybody from high school and below with that hearing loss. And uh let's see. In addition to the um scholarships are the the student of the month, the Tucson Club also gives out um an additional $250 scholarship each year, one for the School of the Deaf and one for the School of the Blind. And at this point, I would like to go ahead and bring the two other people up to
011with me. It is, I believe, David and Harold. Come on up. David and Harold are coming in from the audience, stage left. They're there to greet Sherry Brown to receive the certificates of scholarship. This is David now. Hi. This is a very prestigious honor. There has been one student who has shown so much growth since middle school. We've watched over the years and they have been involved in different sports, different extracurricular activities, and last year, this past summer, went to the youth leadership camp and we saw their leadership skills blossom. This school year they came into their own. They showed great characteristics such as leadership, sportsmanship. They became a role model for other students. And can you guess who? This goes to Nicholas Cabral. Congratulations, Nicky. Come on up. Nicky's now making his way on
012up from the audience, stage right. Congratulations, Nicky. He's there to greet David with a handshake and receive his certificate of scholarship. This is for $250. Esther Marie's also there to greet him with a hug. And Nicky departs back to the audience. Now, this is Harold. All right, good morning. Um Harold Campbell and uh here to present the Optimus Club award for the ASB uh to a student that has been here been here, I don't know how many years, but again, we seen her blossom, we seen her grow and mature uh from a little, you know, girl to a grown woman, just full of confidence and uh ready to take on the world that is she's ready to graduate. I had her this year I was honored to have her this year in my math class
013and with her technology and her intuitiveness and her intelligence she was able to exceed and just show how good she can be and of course she was student of the month one year and just outshined more than we ever thought she could. Well, not that we thought but maybe other people thought we knew because that's why they came here. And this award goes to Sarah Young. Come on, girl. Sarah Young's coming up from the audience stage right with a family member. Esther Marie and Harold Campbell are going to be there to greet her. Harold hands her certificate of scholarship and now the three are standing together in the bright house lights. Harold's going to help Sarah off stage. Meanwhile, Paul Saunders is returning to the beside the podium. Next, I would like to call Carrie
014Hodgkins to the stage. Carrie receives the certificate of scholarship from Sherry Brown and now she's behind the podium. Good morning, everyone. Happy to see all the family and friends of our graduates here. I'm Miss Carrie. I run the coffee shop which most of the students have been to the Sentinel Cafe. This The student that I have the pleasure of giving the scholarship award to, I have taught in the past, has worked in the cafe, is a phenomenal worker, and I bet if I were to ask everyone up here, when you see this this student, they will always give you a smile, they'll always say hello, how are you, and a big positive attitude for everyone that this person comes in contact. So, I have the pleasure of presenting a $215 scholarship to Mr. J.T. Tenorio.
015He's also known as the mayor of ASB. Junior's currently making his way up the wheelchair ramp on the far side of the stage. And here he is on stage now. Again, greeted by Carrie Hodgkinson. She shakes his hand and hands him his blue certificate of scholarship with his check. They pose for a brief picture. Now, Junior's heading back off stage. Paul Saunders returns to sign. Thank you so much, Carrie. The next staff I will call to the stage is Annie Remke. This is Annie now. She receives the certificate of scholarship and heads behind the podium. Good morning. I'd like to present this next scholarship called the Ralph and Martha Hogue Scholarship Award for $215 to a student who also always comes to school with a positive attitude, always kind to everybody, extremely thoughtful in the
016words that she shares with others, and quite the poet that I learned about last year. Um if you ever visit the park that's next door to our school on the Santa Cruz River, one of her poems will be recorded on there. Um this goes out to a student I had the pleasure of working with the past few years, Florencia Moreno. Florencia is coming up the stairs from stage right. Annie Rempe is there to greet her. You go, girl. They make their way over toward the podium side and Annie hands her her certificate of scholarship. Florencia says, "Thank you." Now back to Paul Saunders. Thank you so much, Annie. Next, we are going to have Sherry Brown produce or Yes. Hello again. Um I'm excited to give out this scholarship award where Excuse me, award called
017Self-Determination Scholarship. It's a new scholarship we created because we had a unique situation this year where we had a student who wanted to graduate a year early. And I've been here 30 years, so I've been here a long time and no one has ever graduated a year early. But this young man was determined to do so. He came into uh ANS to be uh semester late and deficient in some credits and actually wanted to finish early. I said, "Well, if you roll up your sleeves and want to give it a try, let's figure it out." And so, this student started taking online classes through Educational Options. And he completed 11 half-credit courses in about a year and a half time over working over the summers. He also took three JTech courses in culinary arts and
018pastry. He was the only student who took two JTech classes at the same time. He took one JTech class during the day and then did one after school. So, for the old phrase, "When there's a will, there's a way," this student certainly made that happen. So, it gives me great pleasure and honor to present the Self-Determination Scholarship of $500 to Daniel Sanders. This is Daniel Sanders coming down the far side of the BPAC here. He's going to be greeted by Sherry Brown. They go for a high five and then Sherry hands him his certificate of scholarship. He departs off stage and back to Paul. Thank you, Sherry. Now, I would like to ask Henry Sanders to please return to the stage. This is going to be the first placard going out. Here's Henry now. Hello
019again. Thank you everyone for being here this morning. This award goes out to the most Outstanding citizenship award, which means it's an individual that has the characteristics of an all around student who is respectful, caring, helpful, is a great role model, and kind. This award goes back out to Marley Campbell Teter. Unfortunately, she may not be here this morning, but we will make sure she receives it. Next, I'd like to bring forth Kimmy Dossett to award the School for the Blind recipient. This is Kimmy replacing Henry behind the podium. She's also got a placard award in her hand. Hello everyone. My name is Kimmy Dossett. I am here to present the outstanding citizenship award. This student demonstrates outstanding citizenship by always having a positive attitude and treating everyone around her with kindness and respect. She
020leads by example and continuously practices independence, taking initiative, and advocating for herself. I present this award to Sarah Young. This will be both an award and a scholarship for Sarah as she makes her way back up the stairs with her family member. It's worth noting that the award she's receiving is in the shape of the state of Arizona. It's a wood placard and it's engraved with Sarah's name as well as the name of the award, which is outstanding citizenship award. Now Sarah and Kimmie are posing together in the light. Sarah's holding her award. They both smile and pose for a picture. Now Kimmie's going to help Sarah guide her back downstairs on the far right side. And it's also worth noting that Marlee Campbell Dieter is here. She has arrived and she's going to be
021able to receive her award in person with Henry Sanders. So yes, Marlee, just to let you know that you have received the outstanding citizenship award for being such a great role model. You are respectful to your peers and to teachers. You are caring and helpful. You are a wonderful role model of kindness to our school. We thank you for being an outstanding citizenship. Thank you. Marley has a very wide smile as she accepts her award and along with Henry makes her way down the stairs on the left side. Back to Paul. Thank you. Now I would like to call our ASD assistant principal Melissa Brown to the stage. This is Melissa Brown receiving a handful of papers from Sherry. She's now behind the podium. Thank you, Paul. Hello. Good morning. My name is Melissa Brown.
022I am the ASD assistant principal and I am honored and truly proud to award the CTE J Ted recognition of completion awards. Three students will be receiving these awards. The three seniors have each taken welding for 2 years at Marana High School. This individual is dedicated, works hard, gets up at the crack of dawn, and does not give up. I'm a I'm proud to announce that this student has received their completion of welding certificate and I just found out that they have passed their certification test. They are now a bonafide welder. This student is a certified welder in our community. Through the American Welding Society. Congratulations, Nikki Cabral. That student has now made their way up on stage. They're now standing beside Melissa. She's handing Nikki a certificate of completion. He poses for a picture
023with Melissa. Congratulations, Nicholas. And then departs back offstage. That makes two scholarships and award for Nikki. Our next student has taken two JTED courses at Marana High School, excuse me, at Mountain View High School. This student was enrolled in culinary during the day and in pastry and baking after school in the evening. He worked tremendously hard and I've seen pictures of his work and he's an amazing baker. Beautiful cakes that he has decorated. Unbelievable. I'm proud to announce that this student has passed and received two certificates. Food Handler certificate and the JTED completion certificate. This certification goes to Daniel Sanders. Daniel is making his way down the far left stairs of the auditorium. Again, previously Daniel won the Self-Determination Scholarship, so he's now winning a JTED CTE Completion Recognition. Woo! He makes his way up
024the stairs and Melissa is there to greet him with both certificates for a total two. Congratulations Daniel. Come stand for a photo. They smile and pose together. Then Daniel makes his way off stage. The next student we'd like to recognize is a junior. This individual took welding for two years at Marana High School. He loves taking welding and would like to pursue this as a career. He looks forward to using his welding skills in work ed his senior year and I'm so proud of his accomplishments for this year. He completed his welding certification. I'd like to recognize Lemuel Tomey. Lemuel is taking a bold strategy and crossing some of the seats in the auditorium vertically. Crossing over them. He's now making his way again down the far left side of the auditorium and up the
025stairs onto the stage to greet Melissa. And they're posing for their picture now. He departs off stage and Melissa Thank you. is replaced by Paul Thank you, Melissa. Now, I would like to call both of assistant principals to the stage, Karen Tallis. Please come and join Melissa Brown to present the next awards. Melissa, we'll have you present first. Hello again. I am honored to present the ASD academic achievement award. This award is where we look at a student's GPA. You might be thinking, "What does that mean?" G is grade, P point, A average. The student's grade point average, a cumulative score for for the entire year. We have three top students. The first GPA goes to the student who receives the bronze, also known as third place. With a GPA of 3.30, proud to announce,
026if you can guess, Lemuel Tanay. Lemuel's going to return back to the stage having just received the recognition of completion for their course. He's going to receive, again, a placard in the shape of the state of Arizona. It's wooden. It's going to have his name engraved as well as the year and the ASD academic achievement text. Congratulations. And we ask that you stay on stage. This is back to Melissa. Next, our silver second place award with a grade point average of 3.42, I'm proud to announce goes to Sarah Tomac. This is Sarah's first award. She's making her way down the stairs now. Again, she also has a placard. Congratulations, Sarah. She poses for a picture with Melissa, and Sarah's going to remain on stage next to Lemuel. All right. Now, the gold award goes to
027our first place GPA with a grade point average of 3.50 goes to me. No, I'm just kidding. Hmm. Proud to announce, drum roll, please. Miss Marley Campbell Dieter. This is going to be Marley's second award. She previously won the outstanding citizenship, and now she is first place for academic achievement GPA. She greets Melissa. Congratulations, Marley. She greets Melissa on stage, receives her placard. And now all three students are gathered together. Congratulations ASB students. Excellent work. Don't go anywhere. The students are going to remain on stage. Now this is Karen Tallis. All right. Now to present the ASB academic achievement awards. Like Melissa said, it's a great point average with a top grade point average a top GPA of 4.0. We also would have had a bronze, silver, and gold, except we have to be a
028little different. This year we have two students who tied. So therefore we have two silver awards. With a grade point average of 3.83. Mind you that's out of 4.0. 3.83. We have Jamal Stell and Anfernee Burke. Jamal and Anfernee are both going to make their way on stage from the right side coming in from their seating in the auditorium. Karen's there to greet them with both of their academic achievement placards. She shakes Jamal's hand and hands him his placard. And they pose together briefly. Now Karen's handing Anfernee's placard to him, shaking his hand as well, and they're going to pose. Anfernee and Jamal are going to move off to the side, and Karen's back behind the podium to present the final award. And for our gold with a grade point average of 3.91, Miss Caitlyn
029Burke. She had to show up her brother. This is Anfernee's sister. She's making her way from the seat in the audience as well. And she's there to greet Karen. They shake hands, and now Caitlyn has her placard. This is back to Karen now behind the podium. And now Paul Saunders. Congratulations, students. It shows how hard you were focusing on your schoolwork, your determination, and that will continue on into your life after high school. Now, I would like to call our seniors and juniors to the stage. All seniors and juniors, please come up. So, currently on stage again, we have our ASD and ASB academic achievement award winners. As well as Paul Saunders and Sherry Brown. Seniors over here. Well, the seniors over here. Your juniors over here. So, now all of the juniors and seniors
030are making their way on stage. That includes all of our award winners and scholarship winners for today. And this is a total mix of ASB and ASD students. Sherry Brown and Paul Saunders are still on stage and currently behind the podium is Jazmine Martinez Guzman, who earlier won the surprise Lions Club award. We, the seniors, oh, we, the seniors of class of 2023-2024 year, have maintained the ASDB spirit all year. It is with great pride and expectation that we pass on through the ceremony the title of senior class to you. We wish to pass on to you the spirit of Sentinels, our winning sports program, our SPG, and the pride we feel in ASDB, our school. Jazmine gestures to the students to her left and right and departs from the podium and is replaced by
031a different student. One of whom is Caitlyn Burke. No. Hello. Put the mic in on. The other student with Caitlyn is Eduardo. We, the future class of 2024 and 2025, proudly accept this spirit and assure you that we will proudly carry on this tradition throughout ASDB's 112th year. That was Lemuel banging on the drum on the left side of the stage. Caitlyn and Eduardo step away from the podium. And they go gather with the other line of students on stage. Now, Paul Saunders is beside the the podium. Oh, what a wonderful tradition, seniors passing the baton to the juniors. Thank you so much. I would like to thank everyone for attending this morning's award ceremony to uh our students' achievements and successes. I hope you all will be able to attend graduation tonight to see
032this wonderful group of seniors to my right graduate. You have worked hard and earned it. Thank you again, everybody. Have a wonderful day. After gathering on at stage right, the line of seniors are going to depart off stage. Same for the other side with the group of juniors. The projector screen behind the podium changes to a graphic which reads, "Congratulations." All right, we're leaving tonight, right?
