[Presenter] We from Sons of Orpheus, of which I'm a member, always feel like this is one of our favorite events of the year. We get to sing on the same stage as the students and a nice mariachi band, and it's just a very enjoyable evening and we know it's for the benefit of the food banks that do such great work at feeding the people of the Tucson area. So, we’ll be back later after the students sing, I will introduce to you Malea Chavez, who is the Chief Executive Officer of the food banks. She'll have a few words for you, and I think at that time I’ll be able to give you an estimate of approximately where we stand on tonight’s receipts for your generosity, and we very much appreciate that. So, on with the show. The students are first. [Miss Kate]: Hi,
everyone. I’m Miss Kate. I'm the music teacher here at the ASDB. I just wanted to give you a quick little intro for our first performer tonight, Samantha Maderos. She is not a student here but she is our wonderful student teacher who comes and volunteers every Tuesday after school to help with the music group. She's going to be performing a really special song, ‘O Holy Night’ and if she would like to say something about it, she can, but she might just launch into it. So, give it up for Samantha. [Applause] [Samantha] Hi, so I picked this song because it's very special to me because well, every day, every Christmas time that I had the opportunity to perform while my mother was on this Earth, she would nag me every single year about ‘O Holy Night’. It was her favorite song. She’d be
like, “When are you going to perform it? When are you thinking?” So, even though she’s not here to see me, I really wanted to perform it because it was really special to her, and I want her to see that I'm finally doing it. And, even though I never really got to tell her while she was here that I appreciated her at the actual performance, I still get to tell my dad that I really appreciate him, and all the times that he’s driven me here so that I can do this. So, this is ‘O Holy Night’. [Applause] [Solo Piano Music] O holy night, the stars [Music] O holy night, the stars [Music Stops] I’m just gonna get that one more time. Sorry all. Thank you. Appreciate it. [Laughs] [Music Continues] O holy night, the stars are
shining brightly. It is the night, of the dear savior’s birth. Long lay the world in sin and error pining, ’til he appeared, [Music Pauses] [Music Continues] and the soul felt his worth. A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices. For yonder beams, a new and glorious morn. Fall on your knees. Hear the angels' voices. O, night divine. O night, when Christ was born. O night, divine. O night, O night divine. [Music Ends] [Applause] Thank you so much for listening to that. That was a bit of a mess. I was a bit nervous, but I wanted to take some time to thank you for all coming to the ASDB Christmas Concert. Sons of Orpheus. This is their 25th year performing, and it’s an amazing group of singers. They come every single Tuesday to perform and they have
been doing an amazing job rehearsing. They’ve worked so hard and the songs are so much fun. And I’ve had an awesome time getting to know your kids, and getting to hear their stories. Getting to just see them grow and have their experiences. And I really thank Kate for letting me come here and help out with this group. I’ve known her for so long and you know, after all this time, getting to have this experience, get into the world of music education is amazing, and I really hope that you enjoy this concert. [Applause] [Audience Member]: Looking good, kids. [Student] Yeah! [Applause] [Student] Does anyone want to say like, ‘Happy Holidays’? Be quiet! And I called you out, James. [Miss Kate] I need to remind you how much courage it takes to be up here on stage. So,
thank you for supporting your friends. [Applause] [Music Plays] [Students] Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way. Oh, what fun it is to ride in a one horse open sleigh. Hey! Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way. Oh, what fun it is to ride in a one horse open sleigh. Dashing through the snow, in a one horse open sleigh. O'er for the fields we go, laughing all the way. Ha Ha Ha. Bells on bob-tails ring, making spirits bright. What fun is to ride and sing a sleighing song tonight. Oh! [In Spanish] Cascabeles, Cascabeles, Fa La La La La. Que alegría todo el día, que felicidad. Hey! Cascabeles, Cascabeles, Tra La La La La. Que alegría todo el día, que felicidad. Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way. Oh, what fun it is to ride in a
one horse open sleigh. Hey! Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way. Oh, what fun it is to ride in a one - horse - open - sleigh. [Music Ends] [Applause] [Music Plays] [Students] Grandma got run over by a reindeer, walking home from our house Christmas Eve. You can say there's no such thing as Santa, but as for me and Grandpa, we believe. She was drinking too much egg nog, and we begged her not to go. But she forgot her medication, and she stumbled out the door into the snow. (Ooo) Then we found her Christmas morning, at the scene of the attack. She had hoof prints on her forehead, and incriminating claw marks on her back. Grandma got run over by a reindeer, walking home from our house Christmas Eve. You can say there's no such thing
as Santa, but as for me and Grandpa, we believe. And we’re so proud of Grandpa, he’s been taking this so well. See him in there watching football, drinking Coke and playing cards with cousin Mel. (Ooo) Christmas without Grandma, all the family’s dressed in black. And we just can't help but wonder, should we open up her gifts or send them back? (Send them back!) Grandma got run over by a reindeer, walking home from our house Christmas Eve. You can say there's no such thing as Santa, but as for me and Grandpa, we believe. Now the goose is on the table, and the pudding made of fig, and the blue and silver candles, match the hair on Grandma’s wig. (Ooo) I warned all my friends and neighbors, better watch out for yourselves. They should never have gave a
license to a man who drives a sleigh and plays with elves. (Sing it, Grandpa!) Grandma got run over by a reindeer, (Not a caribou!) walking home from our house Christmas Eve. (She wasn’t running!) You can say there's no such thing as Santa, (But what about..? I don’t know) but as for me and Grandpa, we believe. (Sing it, Grandpa!) Grandma got run over by a reindeer, (I don’t know who did this!) walking home from our house Christmas Eve. (It was in the middle of the night) You can say there's no such thing as Santa, (What do you mean?) but as for me and Grandpa, we beliee-ee-ee-eve. Merry Christmas. 013I've also invited some amazing, beautiful dorm staff. [Laughing] And I hope you enjoy the song that we’re about to sing. It’s one of my favorites. [Music Plays] [Narrator] Alright, you Chipmunks. Here we go. [Music Plays] [Students] I want a hippopotamus for Christmas. Only a hippopotamus will do. I don't want a doll, or a dinky, tinker toy. I want a hippopotamus to play with and enjoy. I want a hippopotamus for Christmas. Only a hippopotamus will do. He won’t have to use our dirty, chimney flue. Just bring him through the front door, that’s the easy thing to do. I can see me now on Christmas morning creeping down the stairs. Oh, what joy and what surprise when I open up my eyes to see a hippo hero standing there. I want a hippopotamus for
Christmas. Only a hippopotamus will do. No crocodiles, or rhinoceroses-es. I only like hippopotamuses-es. And hippopotamuses-es like me too! [Music Continues] Mom says the hippo would eat me up but then, the teacher says the hippo is a vegetarian. [Music Continues] There’s lots of room for him in our two-car garage. I’ll feed him there and wash him there, and give him his massage. I can see me now on Christmas morning creeping down the stairs. It’s the right time, to rock the night away. Jingle bell time. It’s a swell time, to go riding in a one-horse sleigh. Giddy up, jingle horse. Pick up your feet. Jingle around the clock. Mix and a-mingle in the jinglin’ beat. That’s the jingle bell rock! [Music Continues] What a bright time.
