And to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Motion to approve the minutes. Um I have a motion to approve the minutes of the regular meeting of the Board of Education of April 13th, 2026. So moved. Second.
Motion a second. Any discussion? Hearing none, all in favor? Aye. Aye. All right. Now, can I have a motion to approve the minutes of the closed session of the regular meeting of the Board of Education of May 13th, 2026? So moved. Second. Uh any discussion? Hearing none, all in favor? Aye. Aye. Aye. Uh no communications. Welcome. Okay. Uh before we take a motion for the consent agenda, uh Vince is going to give us just a little quick context on and we discussed more at the May 11th board meeting at Wilson, but just just to uh give us a little idea of what's going on there. Yeah, so with the uh new LFI classrooms that we have over at Wilson, uh it was brought to our attention that we kind of needed to update that space.
Uh it's kind of in the cove um between a couple wings over at Wilson. Um so we worked with uh Aaron, the building principal, uh and uh a committee to kind of come come up with this um so that is what you're going to be voting on. Aaron, you want to speak to that committee um and how that went about? So at the start of the year, we had a call of the public, uh a parent who was concerned about some of our life skills programming, brought it to our attention as we move fifth graders oftentimes to the middle school to create space in our elementary and developmentally students in our life skills pro- programs still play and play is very important to their development. But at the middle school level, um having a safe
place to play and um a place that is developmentally appropriate, um we did not have at the middle school level. So our life skills program is at uh what Wilson and now we have two classrooms there. So um we started a committee um to just address not only that parent's concerns, but just concerns in general and to generate ideas on what other um improvements can we make to our facilities to really support students in our LFI and life skills program from pre-K all the way through grade 12. So, we've had some really nice participation and some really nice ideas generated. Um we also have had some improvement to a restroom at Wilson as well to make it um in a little bit more handicap accessible so that um we have a a nice changing table
embedded inside the room and just better elbow space to really help to keep employees safe as they're lifting students, but then also just to maintain students' dignity as well. So, yeah. Okay. Well, thank you guys um for that context. So, now uh the recommended motion of the Board of Education approve the actions contained in the consent agenda as presented. So moved. Second. All right. Is there any discussion? Uh hearing none, can I have a roll call, please? Lindsey Hines. I. Jeff Manis. I. Audrey Adamson. >> I. Ramona Dixon. I. Jason Farrell. I. Chet T. Smith. I. Okay. Number six, approval of the student teaching clinical agreement between Augustana College and the Moline Coal Valley Community Unit School District number 40 for the 2026-2027 school year. The recommended motion of the Board of Education approve the
student teaching clinical agreement between Augustana College and the Moline Coal Valley School District number 40 for the 2026-2027 school year. So moved. Second. Uh any discussion? Hearing none, can I have a roll call, please? Jeff Manis. I. Audrey Adamson. >> I. Ramona Dixon. I. Jason Farrell. >> I. Lindsey Hines. I. Chet T. Smith. I. Okay. Number seven, approval of teacher education placement agreement between Illinois State University and the Moline Coal Valley Community Unit School District number 40. Recommended motion of the Board of Education approve the teacher education placement agreement between Illinois State University and the Moline Coal Valley Community Unit School District number 40. So moved. Second. Any discussion? Hearing none, can I have a roll call, please? Ardy Hamson? I. Aye. Ramona Dixon? Aye. Jason Carroll? Aye. Lindsey Hines? Aye. Jeff Maeglin? Aye. Chantel
Smith? Aye. Okay, reports, requests, and open discussion. Dr. Sells? That was fast. I'm going to go through a couple of notes before our closeout of our pace school presentation. It's a busy month, right? We have a lot going on in May, but it's it's really the best opportunity to celebrate all of our student accomplishments, all of the great things that our staff are doing. And so, it's a very exciting time. We also had six students apply for the Board of Education seat. We'll be talking a little bit more about that. We had six sophomores apply for a two-year term starting next year, which would be service for their junior and senior year. So, we will be putting a committee together to review those applications and hold interviews as needed. The goal will be to announce
the new student at the second meeting in May and have them begin in August. And we'll be looking for some board member participation in that committee, along with our student Board of Education members, Deputy Superintendent or Board Reporting Secretary, and myself. And we'll work with President Dismet on getting some board participation on that. But we're really excited to see students involved in that process. Tomorrow morning, we will have a very special visit from a delegation from Asbach, Germany, a group of 11. They're already here, but they'll be here visiting the Moline Coal Valley District beginning at 8:30 a.m. and will be with us until 11:30 a.m. touring the district and a couple of our schools. The city of Moline is in the process of establishing a formal sister city relationship with Asbach, which is home
to the working Group, a world-renowned road construction and equipment manufacturer acquired by John Deere in 2017, which is why they're here. So, we're really excited to host them. They have, among a number of their city officials and members from this um company, they've also brought uh some representation from their schools. So, especially their high schools. So, we're really excited to welcome them, learn a little bit about their school system, and bring them into some of our schools as well. So, um certainly board members are welcome in the morning to join. We're going to sort of replicate the model of school tour that we did for when the State Board of Ed was here, um since it sort of came very quickly. Um but I'll put that out in case anybody is available and would like
to join us in the morning. Um couple of other events. Um I don't know, are you guys going to talk about Operation Prom? They're We're not going to talk about Operation Prom. I can if you want me Okay, then uh Abby's going to talk about Operation Prom, uh held uh going to be held later on this week. Um Embrace All Art. We have a wonderful new tradition of a fabulous art show of our life skills program. This year it's going to be May 14th. Uh this is a special event to celebrate the artistic abilities of these students, as well as to fundraise for the purchase of additional assistive technology equipment and other needs uh for this program. The really cool thing this year is we're able to join not just students from Hamilton, but our
life skills students uh from Bicentennial and Wilson. They have all created art in both traditional and non-traditional ways, including paintbrushes with controlled pouring cups, switch controlled spin art, fans, sponges, um and so much more. So, that fabulous art show will be held May 14th at Hamilton, so you are welcome to come along and bring your fabulous checkbooks, uh so so you can purchase some wonderful art. We actually have some of their art hanging in um the Old Town conference room and it's awesome. We love it. Um we, as a reminder, uh Chet mentioned, our special board meeting is going to be held this coming Monday, May 4th. Again, thank you all for your willingness and flexibility to schedule an extra meeting day. We know it is a very busy time. Uh we appreciate the flexibility
from Kate Bulevo from IASB to provide us a second separate meeting day to host the communications professional development class. Um since we are having that meeting, we'll go ahead and just throw on a consent agenda and be able to take care of um any items that we can get done in consent it as well. So, we'll plan to post that agenda this Friday. Um I also appreciate your willingness to start a little bit early. So, we'll start next Monday at 5:00 p.m. Mark your calendars for 5:00 p.m. We'll send a couple of reminders, but we learned that that was a bit of a lengthy class, so this will allow us to get started a little bit early. So, thank you and we'll have to remember to get some snacks so uh we can be refreshed
while we're going through that class. Couple of other events, of course, May 7th is our Moline Public School Foundation spring celebration. We have an awesome foundation. They give out nearly $50,000 in teacher scholarships every single school year. Everything they do is for our teachers, which in effect then benefits our students. And these scholarships are for special projects that enhance learning, that go above and beyond sort of normal school supplies that the district typically is able to provide, and they are just wonderful partners. So, please consider joining that event as well. Um looking ahead to May 11th for our regular Board of Education meeting, that will be hosted at Wilson. Um we are uh looking forward to their spotlight and um, just want to mark your calendars to come to Wilson. May 12th is our senior
convocation, our awards ceremony, and I would say next to graduation, this is probably the most wonderful and positive, fulfilling event, I think, that we have in our district because it really is the culmination of academic success of the students in our district. It is very inspiring and it is very, um, I think, just heartwarming to see the success of our students, but the success of our parents and our community for supporting so many kids to be so successful at Moline High School. So, um, be looking for that event as well. We also have the Quad City Apprenticeship Signing Day coming up on May 14th. Um, it's going to be hosted at United Township this year. They did a little bit of a switch. It has been hosted at the, um, Waterfront Center in Bettendorf, but
is now going to start being rotated in school districts. So, Moline, hopefully, will be able to host in the next couple of years. This is a wonderful opportunity where we find students from all across the Quad Cities be able to sign with local companies and businesses for internships, apprenticeships, Department of Labor apprenticeships, and it is a really, really, really cool event to see what our kids in our community are doing, but also how our businesses are stepping up to provide authentic work-based learning experiences. So, there's just so many wonderful opportunities to see our kids, um, this this month. Um, believe it or not, the Triple I Joint Annual Conference registration is opening up June 1st. It always is so crazy to talk about it in April, but we know that, um, the registrations happen fast
and the conference hotels, um fill up, and we know that um this is a wonderful professional development opportunity for the Board of Education. We actually submitted for three or four um conference presentations, so we don't know if any of them um have been selected yet, but we're really looking forward to another exciting opportunity for learning and board engagement. So, we will be reaching out to get your um RSVP. I know it's hard to think that far ahead, but um we want to be able to do the best that we can to lock in um the conference hotel, so that um it's much easier to access the conference sessions. Um and lastly, after all of the different um activities that I mentioned happening in May, um Tara and I talked about posting um just a general
board activity notice for May for student and staff celebrations, so that um the community can be aware that uh the Board of Education will be together for many events, and we'll we will get that posted as soon as possible so that we will be covered. So, those are the events of the day. I also um at the end of my weekly update that you receive um on Fridays, but sometimes Saturdays, sometimes Sundays. Um at the very bottom, um there's a calendar, and so there's some specific dates for grad walks and convocation and those dates and times. So, if you're looking for some of those specific events, I do have them listed at the bottom of the weekly update. So, lastly, um I wanted to just do a very quick bull blows out. Thank you, Craig.
It's also really hard to believe that we are here um at this point as well. Um you have in front of you our timeline, and I'll go over that um in just a moment, but I just wanted to remind you of our purpose. This is our strategic plan. Does Moline Coal Valley School District have a strategic plan? Yes, we do. It is simple by design. It's a placement style and we follow the acronym PACE: People, Achievement, Community, and Environment. And we are very easily aligned to the Illinois Five Essentials: Collaborative Teachers and Staff, Ambitious Instruction, Involved Families and Community, and Supportive Environments. Those themes really meld well together and this is really uh the definition of what we do, what we value, and and what's important to us, and really how we operate on a
day-to-day. Speaking of the Five E, we're excited to get our data back hopefully in the next month, so we'll be able to see how we are inching closer to our goals and and what types of goals we want to set for the next school year. Um the timeline that you have in front of you is just our normal cycle for setting the goals and monitoring the goals and then closed then closing them out. We try to have a very transparent process. We come to the community and we say, "Hey, this is what we're going to work on. This is what's important." We do monthly monitoring and then we come back at the end of the school year and sort of close them out and say, "This is what we did." Um here we are in
April. The Extended Cabinet, the District Leadership did a self-evaluation of our goals um last week and then here tonight we're doing that formally with the Board of Education. Um next board meeting on the 11th will be an opportunity to collect some input from the Board of Education on our new goal focus areas. We will then do the same thing with principals on May 14th and begin to synthesize all of that stakeholder input along with our performance data that we are collecting here as we round out the end of the school year, 5E, um our academic assessment data, attendance, all of it. Um then we get to work to start writing the new goals, and it typically takes about four or five meetings. We hem and haw over every single word for hours. That is a
fact, believe it or not. Um that is not an exaggeration. And I feel like we get better at it every single year. Um so we're excited to work on that process and be able to bring those to you, hopefully in July, but we also have that first meeting in August now to bring those back to you for formal approval and start the cycle all over again. Um I do want to give a big thank you to our district leadership and our school leadership for their collective work on this year's goals. The schools have really done a great job um adopting the format and really aligning their work to the district goals so that all of the arrows are moving in the right direction. And I also want to thank the district leaders and building leaders
who were involved in our monthly pace school updates. That has been a wonderful suggestion that came from you all last year. We actually loved it. It helped keep us on track and um provided those updates throughout the year and not just so much at the end of the year. So thank you to them and thank you for that suggestion. Real quickly, we have a very simple, user-friendly process to close them out. We evaluate ourselves using a red light, yellow light, green light. We want it to be accessible to everybody. Um a green light is just a rating that we give ourselves if we achieve the goal as it was written. Did we do what we said we were going to do? Now that doesn't mean that, you know, we never talk about it again. If
we rate it green, that means we did what we said we were going to do, and now it has become a part of our standard operating procedure. It just becomes a part of our system. If we rate it yellow, that means the goal was partially achieved. There's more work or time needed, or it was a multi-year goal. And quite frankly, we have a few more yellows this year because we have taken on some multi-year goals and taken some pretty big bites of some pretty big rocks that we know are going to take more than one year to achieve. And then red light, we should never have a red light. I don't think we have yet, but if we do, that means we didn't touch it. We didn't do what we said we were going to
do. So, this is where we landed. It might be a little hard to see, but hopefully you can see the colors. Um we gave ourselves some yellows and we gave ourselves some greens, and there are no reds. Yay! We There are no reds. That's the way it should be. Um so, real quickly for our two people, or we have three people goals. One, we rated ourselves yellow, and two, we rated ourselves green. The two green were uh portrait of a graduate goals and AI stakeholder committees. That work was completed directly as written. So, now the work continues, and it becomes a part of our standard operating procedure, but we did what we said we were going to do. The yellow goal, this is for our ASEND goal, and it is quite complex, but we accomplished
a lot for this goal. Um in August, we're going to roll out to you uh a year one, a year two, and a year three ASEND mini goals, so to speak. Uh we're very excited about this. We are getting ready to uh be able to launch an honors diploma. We're excited to be able to launch a diploma plus associate's degree new partnership with Blackhawk College. We're excited to be able to move forward with a new tracking system for students based in starting in seventh grade. We started with that group this year to begin to find those highest achieving students so that we can make sure that we're paying closer attention to them and giving them more specialized um service when it comes to scheduling and other opportunities. The um If you're planning former curriculum night
was completely revamped and we're back to goal setting now. So there's a lot happening with this goal and a lot more to come. For achievement, we have two yellows, one green, and a half and half. The green goal is the new digital learning platform and blended teaching model that we worked on. Dr. Pribble led that committee along with Mr. Kerstrup for Aspire and Moline High School. Totally revamping the credit recovery system as well. That work was done as completed and now we're rolling. It's going to take a lot more time to really implement, but the core work was completed as written. The MAP goal where students we increase the number of students in grades 3 through 8 scoring at or above the 70th by 5%. We already achieved the goal in reading. We already moved
the needle by 6.4%. In math, we are not quite there yet. We're at 3.3%, but we're still waiting for that spring window to close. So we're kind of a half and half yellow and green there. The other two are yellows as well. The one at the bottom is a multi-year goal. It's by summer 2028 and that is making sure that we meet or exceed the state average on the Illinois assessment of readiness IAR in our core subjects of math and literacy. And then the one above is a new early childhood apprenticeship that is still under development. We got started really late with that one in the school year because we found out about it really late. So that one was a yellow also. For our two community goals, they both earned a green. One was
reduce chronic absenteeism by 10%. Shout out to student services. Shout out to our principals. Shout out to our families and our community. We got that down by 19%. We still have a long ways to go, but we are moving the needle in the right direction. So that one was a green. Um and the other one, shout out to Candace, our public relations. Um she and I and the team have done a lot here and we still are working. Um expanding district marketing, branding, district website. Shout out to EdTech. Our career pathways um has been revamped. Our fast facts um is almost done. This is our new district promotional flyer that's going to the arsenal. That's going to uh all the realtors in the Quad Cities. We're just waiting on that last photo shoot and then
we'll be ready to print uh with our high school students. So um lastly, the newsletter, the quarterly newsletter that goes out to our community, that will get a refresh this summer. So those are the last pieces that are already in motion. So we went ahead and marked that green. And for environment, these two were yellow. This one is also a 2028 three-year goal. So obviously we marked it yellow. We are really striving for all green by 2028 in our Illinois five essentials. And that means we are we receive and earn the rating of strong in all of the five essentials, supportive environment, involved families, ambitious instruction, collaborative teachers and staff, and effective leaders. And hopefully, you can see how important it is to us that we are working so hard with our staff and our
community to get there. And the last one is discipline referrals and also onboarding some new behavior management systems, and this is work in progress. We are still working through Capturing Kids' Hearts and Town program. We actually have a big Capturing Kids' Hearts professional development on June 5th for all administrators. So, that is a work in progress. And lastly, I'll say we learned throughout the work in this goal that the way we are tracking minor infractions, minor referrals, needs a refresh. So, this goal will likely be tweaked a little bit for next year, but that is why we gave it a yellow. And lastly, you don't have to click on it, Craig, but I just want everybody to know the action tracker that you have seen throughout the year where we document all of the action.
That's there um linked as well. Any questions on that? I know it's a lot. I will also share this with you so you can look at it more closely and be able to link to the action tracker. Um lastly, leveling up for next year. We will continue to have both quantitative and qualitative goals. We'll continue to take on big rocks. We are really focused on system improvement, big system improvement, while doing small incremental changes along the way. So, you will see both kinds of goals. And we will continue to provide those updates to you. I thought that was a great addition, and we'll make sure that our action tracker is forward facing. And lastly, um our pace poster will have a new clean fresh look for next year. Um we're always looking for ways to
brighten things up and freshen things up, so we're going with a new format. Um so that is your sneak peek. Um any questions? I know it's a lot. I know I was tired of hearing my own voice there for a little while I was going in, but um questions? No, I just like to say thank you for taking into consideration the feedback that we provided. The um action tracker, the monthly reports really helped not to have a whole lot of questions at the end. Um just understanding what's qualitative throughout the beginning of the year versus quantitative has been super helpful. Um and I I definitely appreciate you and the leadership and the cabinet of principals um effort in doing this. Thank you. Also, I think having trackable like percentage goals has really helped because when
we're hearing this, we actually are hearing numbers and seeing where that's improving instead of a generic "Okay, we want to do better." So I think that's been awesome that we actually have these goals that have numbers behind them and and research behind them that's been huge. Thank you. I I really also I'm excited to see um the some of the programmatic things in terms of for our high-achieving students, some of the other work based I mean, these are some of the things that I think just enhance and just make uh the experiences students have in the only all the other experiences are really robust. And so, I mean, we've been doing that with lots of different populations of students over the years with this and it's just exciting to see them all come to fruition.
Thank you. Thank you. Thanks. We will move on to student board member reports. Um so as Dr. Savage mentioned, we have Operation Prom next Thursday, I believe, during 6th and 7th period. Um, they're taking us out to the driving range to reenact a simulation of a car crash, and then we will listen to a speaker afterwards, just to encourage students to make safe choices and smart choices, um, after prom, which is May 9th at the University Club in downtown Moline. This past Friday, um, Moline Boosters Moline Music Boosters hosted a trivia night. It was my first year attending. I thought it was fantastic. There were so many people there. It was a great environment. Very successful night. And then we also have 1X coming up and this Friday and Saturday Saturday, orchestra is having their
pops concert. I think they have some musical theater, uh, pieces selected to play for you guys. So, if you're interested in going, that one I've heard is always great. Last year they had Star Wars, people loved it. And then my I would also like to give a shout out to our AP teachers as we're gearing down to studying, um, the extra work that teachers put in to make us feel prepared for the exam does not go unnoticed by the students. So, they've really done a great job. And then Interact Club went to a Kids Against Hunger event with Riverdale on Saturday. There were students from UT, Riverdale, and Moline there. So, it was a great opportunity to collaborate, um, get some more family spent in the district. So, that was an awesome event. Um, yeah,
a few things. Spring season is just coming to, you know, its climax. So, sports are obviously underway, and we have a really successful season so far. Moline boys baseball has been undefeated in their conference. Moline tennis has lost one and won two. And obviously boys track and girls track is doing amazing, too. And some exciting events, maybe not so exciting depending on how you see it, AP testing starts next week. So, good luck to every student that's taking one. And yeah, that's all I have. Okay. Thanks, guys. And now we're moving to board member open discussion. I'm going to start real quick. Uh we've been informed that our senior student Board of Education member, Abigail Greenley, will not uh be able to make it to the next couple meetings. So, with that, we'd like to
take a moment to recognize and thank our student Board of Education member, Abigail Greenley, for her outstanding service to our district. For her 2 and 1/2 years with us, she has been a thoughtful and authentic voice for her peers, ensuring that student perspective remain at the center of our work. Her commitment, preparation, and willingness to engage in meaningful dialogue have made a lasting impact on our board and our community. In serving this role, she has not only represented her classmates with integrity, but has also developed the skills and confidence that will carry her forward as a future leader. We are incredibly incredibly grateful for her contributions and wish her all the best in the bright path ahead. Congratulations and thank you. And with that, we have a little token of our appreciation. Speech. No, I
guess I guess I will say something. Um I just like to thank the board. It's been a very insightful opportunity to serve on the board. It's been something I've very been very grateful for. Prior to joining, I had no idea what a school board looked like, like how you guys go to meetings and just decide on things, you know? And so, it's been very insightful just to see the processes that you go through and the work that gets put into the decisions that I'm on the receiving end of. So, now I understand how that looks from both sides. And so, those are skills that I can take forward. So, I'm glad that you guys allow students to be on the board. It's been a great experience for me. Thank you. And just real quick, so
we've been so lucky to have you on this board for so long and just I go to a lot of events in the district and you are at every single one of them. So, you have a way to represent in such a holistic way and thank you for all that you do. I got just your work with women in STEM and your work with actually grade schools and making sure you're giving back to the next grades and they're coming up. I think it's been amazing to watch, to see cuz those kids look up to you guys and you're doing so much in the grade schools. It's very impressive. Thank you. We're starting a new recognition wall at Moline High School, which was you've had so many great ideas, Abby, throughout these years that we are
implementing that make me really, really proud. So, through conversations it came to the realization that not every student at Moline High School knows who the student Board of Education members are. So, Candace and I were actually just working on this today to replicate the photos that are on the history wall out here in a smaller print size, but we're going to start a wall at Moline High School to honor the student board members as they come on with their years of service. Excuse me, with a special recognition so that students know who they are. And since it was an idea that came out of our conversations, we're going to make sure that we start with you, Abby, so that you get up there even though you're done. Okay. Does anybody have anything else for open
discussion? Just a plug for the foundation event that's coming up with the Moline Public Schools Foundation event. If you haven't been, it's a wonderful event. If you don't know about the foundation and what they do, please look them up. Um, I had the privilege of being on that foundation for 5 years and actually got to read the grants that the teachers were writing. Um, and they are coming up with really innovative ways to get students engaged and this is funds that would not be covered, you know, through their normal budget. So, please attend if you can, donate if you can, um, or at least like and share the event on Facebook to your friends. I said >> Superintendent, was there any final number from Friday? Uh, I know I don't have but it was probably
record-breaking. We had some good amount from our silent auction stuff. So, thank you for attending but that um, want to say to you with graduation coming up um, that involves Project Graduation. So, another place you can give to is of course um, making any donations to Project Graduation and encouraging our seniors to attend that. Um, and then I will make my plug out here to all of you, anybody that's listening, that anybody would like to come help uh, do the um, casino night portion of it with me for my eighth and final time um, from about 10:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m. Uh, please I need volunteers to come help uh, teach students how to gamble. Um, it was very fun last year. But if you are at all nervous cuz I did not know I
don't know that much about gambling, I guess. And they were like, "Hey, these kids aren't old enough to go to a casino anyway. So, tell them whatever you want." They said, "Yeah." No, but it's so fun. So, I was looking for volunteers overall even if you don't want to do that part. But it's a great event. And really a lot of times people will think that they have to have a senior kid to be involved in it but no, you can get caught up in your first child's freshman year and then do it for 8 years. So, Now, you can knock on our our door. You know where we at. Yep, I'll come by. Oh, there you go. You know. Anything else? All right. Well, then I'll move on to close session. Uh I have
