All right. It is 5:00 on Wednesday, January 7th. Calling the special board meeting to order. Please stand for the Pledge of Allegiance. >> [laughter] >> I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. I was getting thrown by the roll call. I'm like, I can't say everyone present, but Okay, we have no public comment. You do notice the absence of Ms. Whitley, Ms. Hanson, and Dr. Hanson, don't you? Okay, yeah. Last [laughter] time I was like, roll call, I'm like, I know, cuz it's a it's not a committee meeting, but it is, though. Threw me off. I know, I was like, Hang on, let me get my brain in there. As far as
you know, dirtier was something done earlier in the day. Okay, so first up is the health, life safety amendment 10. Did you see, you know, this is the connection to we need to get this amendment taken care of, so then we can use the life health safety funds uh um for the actual project, and I need to have this approved before I can apply for the small maintenance grant. Um so, we'll get this approved tonight, hopefully, and then I will present to you guys the grant next Wednesday, and then we'll get that to the state, get that uh taken care of. Okay, I need a motion to approve the health life safety amendment number 10 as presented. So moved. Second. Both? Yes. Flores? Yes. Duchenko? Yes. Strader? Yes. Motion carried. Okay. >> because is I'm
on this side of it. I know. Well, I like I said, I had it in my mind committee meeting and I'm like, no, this is different. Um next up is the full-time bus driver that we talked about at the last board meeting. Transportation meeting. No, we talked about this one in the board meeting, wasn't it? Both. Both. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. >> [laughter] >> Yeah. So, I need a motion to approve the employment of Thomas Hines as a full-time bus driver. So moved. Second. Flores? Yes. Kishanto? Yes. Trader? Yes. Bell? Yes. Motion carried. Just for reference, um they started that route on Tuesday. I sent an email out to all 29 family members. Oh, yeah, you were right about that. Um I should I don't know if I sent it once or twice. I didn't see
It was twice. >> Yeah, he said he wasn't sure if it went the first time. >> Right. PowerSchool didn't say it sent it, so I just resent saying apologize. Um so, that's speed thing curve, so it's It's in motion already. Thank you. Okay. So, next up is the press plus 120 update. This is a discussion because while the first reading at the next meeting, the second reading at the meeting after that before it actually gets implemented. Correct. So, as always, I gave you guys I didn't make you guys read this. I gave you this. Um there are a couple kind of big ones. Now, I won't say big ones, I shouldn't say that. There are decisions that the board has to make. Um and so, I kind of put things in order of where they
need to be addressed. So, the first one is 660. Um there is a consideration to require the Irish Famine as part of the curriculum. Um so, I did reach out to our social studies teachers and well, the principals did for me. And it is covered, but right now it's not required. And so, when I say I would not I would recommend saying no to making it a requirement because if you make it a requirement and you don't cover it, you've now violated your policy. If you still do it, there's nothing against doing more and not enough. Does that make sense? So, um I would recommend keeping it as it is right now and not adding the requirement of the Irish uh famine even though it is covered. Um and then on 6210, um that is
the adoption of um >> [clears throat] >> excuse me, the adoption of your instructional um materials. Right now, things are brought to you and they're approved and then they're adopted. The change would be that only the primary instructional materials would be covered by you and then the rest is approved by me. And so, the default on this one again is no, allowing you guys to do what you always done and keeping it in your hands. Um that way it's not, well, the superintendent got to make that decision even though he's you know, it's For right now, I'm very happy with the way we do it. We we come up with a plan, the teachers do all the research for you guys and then they bring it to you where they have a family night, do
something like that, and then you guys approve the the curriculum in and of itself. You have the adoption in and of itself. So, I would recommend also saying no to that one, which is the default setting. All right. Yeah, I I don't disagree. Read through I did read through Aw. the things Good on you. with all my notes. >> [laughter] >> Um but yeah, I I agree that that should be left in our hands because then if there's people in our community that have concerns with um some of the material, then they can bring it to the board's attention and we can look from there. Then it doesn't rest on one person. You get multiple views. I have a question for the Irish famine. They didn't add anything to the what we're teaching now. So,
it's like the standards and like the content. There's no new stuff they had to Correct. Correct. >> I'm saying. They didn't add >> saying the concept of that would have to be covered. >> they didn't say like you had to teach certain things of >> Nope. Nope. It's in I can actually read it to you if you want. It's It's in there. They would add it after the Ukrainian refugee. That is part of the requirement as it sits right now. But the Irish famine isn't a requirement. There There was your consideration if you want to put it in there. I guess I'll leave it up to them. If they cover they cover it. Yeah. That's one of those It's good to have leeway in case something happens or they don't get to it. You know
how teaching is. You maybe get stuck on something a little longer and >> Right. As long as they're doing what they need to do for the course, the extra stuff if they can get to it. Yeah. Have they ever do Do we know if they ever didn't get to it for some reason? >> I didn't I didn't ask that specifically. I said, you know, do you Mr. Thomas says he covers it in his class. Mr. Herron does it in his part of US history. >> Okay. Yeah, I mean, so as long as they're I mean, that I would say that's their own time is all. Is there anything else we're supposed to do in those classes? Sounds good to me. Okay. Um then the next grouping that you see there are all the changes based
on the bills that were passed in Illinois. >> [clears throat] >> Um I did bring the um this is the the I would say this is the semi-controversial one um because if a if the SRO including wants information or requires the police requires any information from us, that's the 7150. They actually have to fill out that that that form of request. They can no longer just kind of walk in, flash a badge, and say we need this. There's now a process that they have to follow. So, that is the document that we once approved that we would have in all the offices. Um I've already shared it with the SRO. I'm sure he I know the old chief had it. The new chief probably has seen it as well. So, oh, sorry. No, it's okay.
It's your It's your It's your Basically a records request based on um police needs. And this is just basic law enforcement, so this would cover like if kids were on probation and a probation officer wanted to come and see and everything, it would they would follow the same That is a standard >> That is a really good question. If they are looking for records, I would probably say yes. However, it's already if it's already court-ordered, that's because a lot of times with a probation officer, those things are implemented through court order. But if it's I don't Yeah, I don't want to do that. Maybe maybe not. But if it's you know, "Hey, we noticed this happened the other night. We would kind of like to come in and and pull the you know, we would
like attendance records attendance records. Well, no, not now you actually have before we could you know, you were able to work in in cohesion with them. Now there's an extra step to make sure that they're just not getting uh There's a reason we're just asking versus just asking. Correct. What sort of kind of a cover, making sure that whatever's being given out is should be given out to people who should have the information. >> Agreed. Yes. So I don't think it's a negative thing. I mean It protects everyone's privacy, too. Yep. Um >> [clears throat] >> Do you just kind of want me to go through the rest of this form or do you want to Um You got to pull up Uh this piece of paper. You have this one. I mean, this is
silly. There was really a Leif Ericson Day? >> [laughter] >> Apparently, yes. So just just so you're informed, Leif Ericson is no longer a holiday. Leif Ericson Day is no longer a holiday. Um I don't I don't think that I really had anything else that I was personally And the good news is most of these we already do, like the vast things Steve's are in charge of. The sub thing we is a new one we are going to implement and obviously implement that next year. That's going to be part of the in-service day when the staff works in buildings. Um we're going to have the district will have the subs come in and do their trainings. So, it's some of the requirements of the subs is a little bit more than what they had been
Now, they have to be trained in the >> [snorts] >> E B R S, the the the fire, the tornado, stuff like that. >> And that is maybe I mean, since this is a new thing, I wonder if maybe some of the local Will County schools, like maybe each district takes a turn and ends up having like a monthly kind of training and stuff like that. Cuz I remember other districts that the like bigger districts have had once a month is our sub training. Yeah. To kind of get new and everyone has to do what you have to go through and maybe that's something cuz we all are all smaller and probably the same subs that sub for us, sub for Creekside Park and everything like that. Maybe we all take a turn. Yeah, maybe.
Maybe. Every couple months or once a quarter, that way you can get the newer subs cuz that's the problem, too. When you need newer subs Once you get hired in, you get training. But what if you have a sub Oh, well, we got to wait cuz we don't have, you know Oh, yeah. Do they have like some kind of a handbook that they can So, that's one of the things we got to kind of create. Like we have all the documents to get it created, but we need to put it in Cuz I know stuff like the fire, tornado, like all that kind of I'd say easy to put together. >> sub binder they always get from the district office and stuff like that, but we want to be able to You're right, we want
to be able to give them a solitary one that says, "This is our our E B E B R S. This is our fire. This is our tornado. This is our bomb shelter." And whatever we can figure out. Yeah. You don't want to Yeah. Yeah. Um, there was one other one that I wanted to know. So, there was where they added a requirement for um, the drug abuse um, to be covered. 660? Yeah. Okay, I'm sorry. >> [laughter] >> Yeah, so page top of top of the second page. >> So, 660 is your curriculum content policy. That's the that's the the big one that everybody Before we get there, can I just one question? I don't know. Number eight, you know, all the kids have to do fast to graduate. Is there a spot on
PowerSchool that when the kids do it, they can just click so it's done? Or through Schoolinks? Like I did That would be That would be a Steve Sarsfield question. I know he is always provided the list of who has and has not because he has contacted the state multiple times and says, "I can't make them do it. I I know you're asking me to do it, but I can't force them." And they go, "Well, then they can't graduate." So, I know he has the list, but I I don't want to give you an answer of yes or no because like for him so it's the weirdest thing ever. Why but why would you make it a state requirement if you're not asking for financial aid or grants or anything and you're not going to college?
You don't need my information. I'm sorry. Sorry, that's my I agree. >> SORRY, THAT'S MY PERSONAL THING. IT'S AND IT'S so it's very it's the Cuz I I was like I was like I was not able for my kid like my kid's not going to college. I don't I don't need you don't need my information. Right. Yeah. No, I >> [laughter] >> I don't disagree with that that that's No, I just said if they have to do it, try to make it easier like if there is a way that just like the kids can do it on Schoolinks. >> Yeah. I also believe there should be an opt out just like you guys said. There should be an opt out that fits fits a lot. I had to sign a service. You can opt out
for FAFSA. They do they there's a waiver they have to fill out and like say they're doing like military or something. >> Right, but they still have to do it. It's not an like we can't opt them out. We can't say this is not a requirement for the school to graduate. It's They either have to do the FAFSA or the They would have to right. They have to do one of the And that's what Steve said. He goes, "There are people who won't They're going to opt out. They're not going to fill out. Who cares?" Well, we care. They need to do it. And and they're telling you you can't graduate high school because you didn't Well, not even them. I mean, that you would need your parents' information to do. So, that's also not
fair because you're telling a child that they can't graduate because their parents do something like that. That's another thing I've got because you got to have Both parents. Well, not always. If you're a single parent, you don't have split 50/50. 50%. That's a new one. If you're 50% >> Oh, maybe that's new cuz that wasn't not when we when we started this Bergamo roll. That was the lovely 23 roll. We we just know that we're not in charge of the state, so >> [laughter] >> I mean, we don't get a say in it. It's just one of those things that's like whatever. Everything that the government does. Anyway. Um I like I like >> like that one. Okay. >> [laughter] >> Sorry, if I don't. Go ahead. And then No, it's fine. Just kind of
give you a encompassing 660. The bulk So, my perception now, I've not heard of this, but my perception reading through this, if you remember a few years ago, there was that comprehensive section ed class that we don't teach here. But, a lot of schools opted out of it, but we didn't theoretically opt out cuz we don't have it here. And so so my belief is and I if I'm wrong, I apologize. So many schools opted out of that specific course that everything that was included in that class that was not specific to sex ed was not being covered. So, if you look at a lot of this, it took out the the drug abuse, the internet abuse, all those things, you'll notice were part of that comprehensive health program, but because classes weren't being taught
because so many people opted out of it, they were missing that component. So, they pulled out basically the non-sex ed portions of it and kind of implemented it elsewhere. So, that that in the grand scheme of things is I believe the bulk of 660, but please ask anything specific. Um no, just so there was like a drug the um DARE drug Right, the drug abuse comprehension health program um and then they put it in as a requirement for K through 12. So, does some of the things that our SRO does, does that is that covered? Yep. So, it's that theoretically DARE program K through 12, but the program that we will have teaching it >> yes, would cover that, not necessarily part of like a classroom curriculum or something. Right. He'll He'll He'll take care
of that at the elementary. Um the junior high, we probably touch on a little bit but it's more going to be the the health teachers and then obviously the high school teachers here. Um, we're going to have that as a unit in your health. Yeah, cuz it's it's a three week. We get the letter that says home what what they expect them to do. Um, I have a this probably just our curriculum question then for it. About the internet safety, social responsibility and all that. Is that also included in the grades three through eight? Like Yeah, it's age appropriate cuz some of those fifth through eighth graders are all on social media. >> So so 2027 so it's not going to be next year but within two years. Yes, the instruction of internet safety is
a requirement and so Mrs. Real would have to implement that and then um, yeah, Terry will still be here at that time. Terry will put it >> But it's also just instruction. I mean, they're not monitoring it or any consequences. But I mean even when I was in school we had internet safety where you went and you talked about what you should say and what you shouldn't say and how it's always out there and I'm sure that's even being talked about now with the children whether they listen or not. >> And I think what Adrienne is alluding to is connected to number eight. Yeah. >> Number eight is specific to nine 12 but I I think it would be age appropriate to implement that at three eight as well. That just because something's on Tik
Tok doesn't mean that it's a great idea to set fire to your cat. Don't set fire to your cat. It's also like It's like a paperclip and a chrome charger. Or inhale cinnamon. Yeah, or like just with the snapchat, you know, that Cuz you see the kids even on messenger on Facebook that has to be through your parents. Yep. But just the social what is appropriate for >> Well, and that's hard too is how okay, you're saying three through eight to teach social media but the social media apps say that you're not allowed to be on them unless you're 16 or over. So we can't teach those concepts or those apps or anything like that because legally those children aren't allowed to be on there. Which is why I think there's that separation at three
eight nine 12. >> Because social media, I mean, I've got a thing I send out to all my parents every year. Most every social media app 3rd through 8th isn't legally allowed to be on unless they lie about their age. But there's But But I think there's some way we can incorporate >> Like the cyber bullying Just Just the idea The idea of You know, hey, your siblings might have this. That kind of thing. Or you might watch a YouTube video about a Tic Tac. >> Yeah. Yeah. So silly. Yes. As having to talk responsibility, numbers six and seven would not be a a meme. Shoot. So then literally everything else in this packet is your this your either legal updates. Um They They change some numbers. Or it's part of the five-year review that
nothing has changed, so they just kind of change the date. Updated some language and things like that. What was number one? What did they change in the course labels? Where is number one? Oh, the the very the bottom first page. Removing some terms or labels of I think that was just some again some names they updated names. >> covered up. Yeah. And I can tell you what it actually used to say. So this is number one there. This is number Oh, they struck part of it here. I can't read that. Sorry, ladies and gentlemen. What does it say? Dangerous opioid So it says in kindergarten through 8th grade students, subjects include and then it and music and then it cuts out and Good. You can read that. I can't read that. >> Oh. And drug
and substance abuse prevention including the dangers of opiate opioid abuse. So, it removed the terms of of requiring as part of your instruction. And it took off like it's not career it's career and technical education not career and technical vocation education. So, it took off vocation. >> Yeah. So, it's it just changes Okay, I was wondering cuz it seemed very generic. We don't call it RCTE. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, it's not called character education anymore. It's called prevention and response to bullying and suicide prevention. So, that's what I meant throughout there. You you'll see they changed the the names. The content's basically the same. It used to be family consumer science. That was the name of it. Now it's CTE. Facts. Then in physical fitness it's public health. Like just changing terms. Just when you think
you don't learned it all >> [laughter] >> they're going to change it up. And then obviously the last one is um I shared this with you as well. We've had to talk about a little bit. Just for just I know you guys know this but just for for a reminder for our public who's watching now or will be watching now. The >> [clears throat] >> the the concept of a board policy is to create guidelines overarching role overarching ideas that then get implemented by myself, the principals, the teachers, so on and so forth. And so this is an AI policy. This in a nutshell simply says that is the responsibility to do safe, responsible um monitoring. Most of this is related to staffing still. There is nothing in here specifically that says that kids will
be using AI. Um I know that's always a big concern that we're promoting kids using AI even though we know they kind of do when they do a lot of stuff. Um but it does provide a consistent message regarding responsibility, the use of anything. Um it's always going to be taught. It well, it's coming whether you want it or not. I mean, I I went to a couple at the the school board conference. I went to a couple sessions about AI. And it was literally the best presenter kind of did It doesn't matter how you feel about whether it's coming or not. It's kind of like computers. Way back in the day when people are like, "I'm never I'm never using them. I'm never" Now, there's not one person that does. Like that doesn't use
computers and stuff like that. And it's like a train that's coming at you. And you can stand in front of it and say, "I don't want to do it. I don't want my kid." But it's come like and not preparing them for that future is kind of putting them at a disadvantage. It is does create a role of So, Joe, the technology director, and Paul, the specialist, will be in charge of the AI ethics and safety officers. It creates a title for them. So, right now, Joe does all of that through SOPA. Well, they all do it through SOPA, which is kind of the initial level of everything they do. So, they really do it now. They make sure anything that's used here is approved by the state of Illinois. They get the certifications through
SOPA. So, there's nothing that's There shouldn't be anything where that that's being used that hasn't already been approved by both the state level and us. So, then would the next thing be like Cuz this is mostly what the the district policy. My guess is the next step is that the teachers and principals will start to develop like the Within your annual Yes, like the what the students can and can't do, their accountability, and the negative repercussions of, Yeah. not following whatever it is that they're Cuz they research in elementary school, too. So, it's like it is Cuz cuz cuz right now, it is still unless there's not a teacher that says, "Hey, go to Gemini and write an essay." That that's not a thing. So, if a kid does that, that is >> It's plagiarism
or what? >> It's cheating. It's It's an unethical use of of academic >> Well, it's even getting hard even I teach research strategies and stuff like that. We do a research paper and the problem I've been having lately is I have to end up finding these websites that kind of lock out everything because even now if you just go into Google and you type something in, it starts an AI response and they just want to copy that. I'm like, "No, no, we have to learn how to read like it's it is very hard even as an educator to try to find and prevent that because it is just in everything." Yeah. So, days of using an encyclopedia are over. They're on the table now. Yeah. So. Okay. That's kind of everything I got for y'all.
I don't know. Just second public comment. What are we doing here? I got a Well, committee and we were at Yeah, that's my fault. You messed up. I did. No. Okay. So, that's all we got? That's all I have for you. Okay. So, I need a motion to adjourn the meeting. So moved. Second. All in favor say I. I. Opposed? Meeting adjourned.
