[laughter] >> It's a good idea. >> All right. We will uh continue on with the the rest of our agenda. Um >> I wanted to share

007with you um because I share with you annually that uh the eighth grade um there will still be the eighth grade trip to Washington DC through World Strides. We have aboutund students signed up for that. That's the um May 2nd to 4th weekend. I think it's always important to point out, I know the board knows this well, that this is not a district sponsored trip. This is a trip that um we work with World Strides, allow them to communicate directly with our families um who have an interest in their eighth graders going on this trip to DC, but it is not a district event. But again, um just want to always keep you up to date on that that happening again this year. Uh last Friday we had our teacher institute day and you have

008the agenda there from the day. Um elementary teachers focused a lot on standardsbased grading. Uh middle school staff focused on um just engaging instructional strategies, executive functioning and how to support our middle school students. And then a lot of our other um employee groups had more specialized uh professional development based on their unique roles. Another quick announcement, we have our family learning night. Next week's a really busy week in district 96. I think every week's a busy week in district 96. Um we have family learning night next Wednesday and that will be family math night. This is our fourth annual family learning night. Um really hosted by our family community partnerships action team and excited about that as it's really become sort of a part of an annual tra tradition with our district families. So

009hope a lot of families will be able to join us for that. Um it is time to start registration for the coming school year. So we have we are launching our virtual kindergarten information night on March 5th. Um as you recall during the pandemic we started doing that virtually and found out that lots of young families really benefit from a virtual opportunity to learn about uh kindergarten and the registration process etc. So that's been ongoing that we've done that virtually but we do launch it on a certain day because it's also marks the day then that we open up registration for families and um parent we have uh organized the services of Dr. Doug Bolton. He's a child psychologist that worked with our staff a couple years ago on Institute Day. He's written some books

010on uh the well-being of um children and the importance of school as a really important place of connection and nurturing uh for children and we're excited to bring him in to do a parent night for us on April 13th. So again, just have that in the future on the calendar and wanted to share that with you. And then perhaps more immediate um and last but not least under the superintendent's report is that we are starting our new strategic plan um next Tuesday night. So you all have the roster of the students, families, parents, staff members, administrators, and board members, three of you that will be joining us for strategic planning starting next week. We actually had a living the plan strategic plan session just this afternoon that kind of put some closure on our current

011five-year strategic plan and talked a lot about just the the achievements as well as just the um people reflected a lot on just their own personal and professional growth and opportunity and being involved with it. So it was a really valuable meeting but um excited to be launching a next five-year plan and we have a survey that soft launched today. Um, it will be communicated with all families by way of a family email tomorrow and it will have a QR code and a link to the survey. Um, I know the board members also have some hard copy cards that we're going to do everything we can to really encourage a whole lot of um, participation. It is going to be one of the major factors that really brings a lot of family and staff voice

012into the strategic planning process. So, that is the superintendent report. >> Thank you. I know we briefly talked about this last time, but uh Doug Bolton is an a great speaker. So, just to put another plug in for anybody listening, uh put that one on your calendar. I just double checked. I forgot to, so I've got it on there now. >> All right. Thank you for that. Uh up next is the approval of our consent agenda. Could I have the board secretary read tonight's consent agenda? >> Pretty short consent agenda this evening. Tonight's consent agenda consists of uh minutes from the previous meetings, the January 21st regular business meeting, the personnel report as presented, the payables pre-list as of January 31st along with the payables pre-list as of February 18th. >> Thank you. Is there

013a motion for the board of ed uh before we vote, does anybody want to remove any of these items for further discussion? No. Okay. So, is there a is there a motion for the board of education to approve the consent agenda as presented? >> So, move. >> Second. >> Thank you. Kathy, would you please call the role? >> Okay. Mr. Olic. >> I. >> Mr. Bari. >> Hi. >> Mr. Hunt. >> Hi. >> Miss Gun. >> I. >> Miss Kick. >> Hi. >> Miss Claps. >> Hi. >> And Mr. Mayorhead. >> I. >> Motion passes. Thank you. Up next is the uh contract for a our new Ames school principal for next fall. Is there a motion for the board of education to approve the 2026 2027 contract for the principal of Ames Elementary School

014to Nicole Maza as presented? >> So moved. >> Second. >> Before we vote, is there any comments or discussion on this? >> No. All right. Kathy, would you please call the role? >> Mr. Versati >> I >> Mr. Hunt >> I >> Miss Gun >> I >> Miss Kick >> I >> Miss Claps >> Hi >> Mr. Ole >> I >> and Mr. Mayorhead >> I motion passes. >> Do you want to say anything? >> Yeah and I will make a few I [clears throat] will make a few comments. [applause] >> Nikki is here. Um some people know Nikki already. Nikki has been a teacher with us for a number of years. She has also been in our newly designed administrative position this year as our elementary intervention and support coordinator. Has done an outstanding

015job with a new position that we say is sort of like an assistant principal, but it happens to be at all four of elementary schools and um really designed to be a lot of direct support to our teachers. Um Nikki, I have I have come to know Nikki as a truly hands-on leader. Um very compassionate leader, a great listener. our staff just were really excited the staff on the interview team to um to choose Nikki as our next Ames principal. So um again thrilled to thrilled to have you joining the team just in a new way. She's already been on the leadership team but joining in a new way. So and I know she has her family with her here tonight. So >> I have my son Tommy and my daughter Saraphina, my husband Vince,

016but I just wanted to say thank you um Riverside District 96 um board members and Dr. Martha um Ryan Toy. Um I am truly honored and proud to accept this principal position for Ames and to serve the continue serving the community just in a different way. Um I am grateful to Mr. Herman and the Ames staff um and team for the strong student centered foundation um that is already in place and I really look forward to um working alongside and learning from our students and our staff and our families um as we move forward together always doing what's best for students and keeping them at the center of our work. Thank you for placing your trust in me. [applause] >> [applause] >> So, it appears we may have a new position. >> Yeah, we do.

017[laughter] >> So, we'll see that posted go up. >> Uh, okay. Up next, another approval for our new director of finance. Is there a motion for the board of education to approve the 2026 2027 contract for director of finance to Steve Wilder as presented? >> So, moved. >> Second. >> Thank you. Any discussion, comments, anything before we vote? >> No. All right, Kathy, would you please call the RO? >> Okay. Miss Gun, >> I. >> Miss Kick, >> I. >> Miss Class, >> hi. >> Mr. Olic. >> I. >> Mr. Barati. >> I. >> Mr. Hunt. >> I. >> And Mr. Mirhead. >> Hi. >> Motion passes. >> All right. And Steve Wilder is also here tonight. I don't know um [applause] I haven't had an opportunity to [cheering] get to know Steve yet quite

018as well as I know Nikki, but we um we got an opportunity to get acquainted during the interview process. Um Steve is also somebody that we have a lot of just through our shared network of school leaders and district leaders. A lot of people reached out on Steve's behalf to share what a what a great leader and how great he would be as our new director of finance and operations in district 96. So, uh, Steve brings a lot of district office experience and we are thrilled to have you joining the team as of July 1 also. So, um, thanks for being here. >> I don't have prepared comments. You did a great job, by the way. [laughter] But what a great night to come [snorts] and and and be part of a board meeting to

019recognition. This is what it's all about, right? There are a lot of things that happen behind the scenes and I'm looking forward to being part of the leadership team that's part of that as well as working with board. Um, but this is what it's all about. So, I got really lucky to be here on a night where students are recognized, to see the energy, to see that passion, to see parents and and relatives here to support them. Um, one of uh the leadership team members reminded me that this is a place where people treat each other as family, and you could see that here tonight. So, I'm really looking forward to being part of that. Thank you for the opportunity. I'm excited to get started. [applause] >> All right. Up next is the Riverside Education

020Council. Any commentary? Nope. Not tonight. All right. Any board member comments? >> No. Getting ready for registration. >> Doug Bolton's a good speaker. Just th put that plug in again. >> I attended um one of his sessions at the conference, the annual conference. >> Yeah. Kind of. Yeah. Belonging, power, belonging, greeting students, open door. >> Yeah. He's a very uh he's a very engaging speaker and his content is very um very meaningful. >> Move on. Any other comments? >> Nope. Okay, that brings us to old business. Uh first up is the approval of our school calendar for 2026 2027 and school dates. Um we had a bit of conversation around this last go. I don't know. Uh before I I call the motion, does anybody have any other comments or questions or anything uh before

021we motion and vote on this one tonight? >> I guess given the amount of uh feedback we've received, would it make sense to have a recap on some of that discussion from the last meeting? >> Uh I'm only aware of one, but yes, we've heard some too, but >> Oh, okay. I have not heard anything other than the one email that we received. So, uh yeah, we I don't Martha, I might hand it over to you. closer to the inner workings of this. >> Sure. Sure. So, and I'm just going to go from from the memo, too. I know Angela, um, Dr. Doola did a great job explaining it at our last meeting, and some of the intricacies of the unique calendar. Every year is a little bit unique just based on when different holidays,

022fall, etc. Um, as you know, we always have a goal to align winter and spring break with Riverside Brookfield High School. And then we look at the high school start date. We look at the other elementary schools within our area. Um, we've kind of talked about this sense that, you know, high schools seem to be moving toward starting even earlier in August, whereas elementary schools, I think, have have been sort of not not necessarily inclined in that same way. I know that's an area that people have a lot of discussion about. Um, right now there would be about a what week and a half, two week gap, right, Angela, between the start of Riverside Brookfield High School and our own elementary district. So, this would have a start date of Thursday, August 27th, and an

023end date of June 8th. um the staff would come back for two institute days on August 25th and 26th. So that's essentially the start of the school year. And then summer school dates are also part of this approval process. Just to point out, it's this summer school which would be July 13th to August 6th. >> Yeah. I I would just add personally like I think the some of the comments I made last time too was like I don't necessarily like the calendar, but it's just a very like it's just a weird way that the calendar falls this year and then these other things that we benchmark again is just really challenging and unique year at least compared to the last five that I've personally been involved with. Um >> and I think also to point

024out that [clears throat] the um addition of the half days that we had not had before still count as full school days. They're not counting as a half of a attendance day. >> Yeah. So that's not >> causing affecting Yeah. Thank you for pointing that out. So, at the last meeting, Martha, I think you were going to meet with uh parks and wreck to discuss some of the short uh or would they be able to cover any of the shortfalls? >> Yeah. So, that is something that um you all decided and we agreed to through an intergovernment agreement last year that um Riverside Parks and Wreck will provide half-day programming for the half days that we have in our calendar. I know that was something that the board felt really strongly about is that we

025did not want our families to um be unnecessarily impacted by a half day of school. So, I actually had our first planning meeting with Riverside Parks and Wreck last week. Um they are very ready to go. I I think the trickiest part that I'm fretting about is numbers, right? Like, you know, is every child in District 96 going to sign up to do this? I think perhaps they should. You know, it's a great opportunity. Um, or is it going to be something more similar to what the parks and recck department might notice on uh an inclement weather day or they do like a schools out session on some of our holiday uh weekends. They don't get a big turnout. So, they are not anticipating necessarily that there will be a whole lot of kids like

026not hundreds and hundreds or near you know a thousand even. um that they are thinking that it's probably still a time when families may adjust calendars, that neighbors may help each other out or family members, etc. So, we're we're looking at getting how can we gather numbers um earlier in the process. So, Riverside Parks and Wreck is looking at that. They really feel that they should take the lead on gathering those numbers. They have a registration process. There's information that they need to know as they take children sort of essentially under their care for that period of time. So I I felt really confident that they have thought about it a lot. They brought their whole team to come in and talk about it and we'll I think we'll have to sort of live into

027it a bit that we'll have to be ready. We know that um one of the things we have agreed to do with staffing if needed is that our own pair professional team the way we wrote our current CBA with our collective bargaining agreement is that um if needed our own pair professional team could be available to support and supervise students as well. They're not anticipating needing that, but again, I think time will tell and the actual registrations will give us the best indicator. >> Um, any indication on how far in advance they would like signups? >> Yeah, I think they will want signups like in at the beginning of the school year. Maybe when you sign up for before and after care, you would also sign up. And not that it couldn't be added or

028changed, but I think to get some prediction of numbers >> if you know you're going to need it, go ahead. But that it's still open up to a day or two before maybe. Yeah. >> Because they are thinking if the numbers aren't large that they would use um the water tower and the scout cabin that they have a van that they would even be able to like bring kids in shifts. If there were a lot of kids, they would probably rent a bus for that. But that um again they're again probably estimating on the lower end. I'm wondering about the higher end. Again the higher end our own pair of professionals could support and we can use our own classroom. So you know I think we're ready to go whether the numbers are large or

029the numbers are small. >> Yeah. A little bit of a learning curve with this one. >> Yeah. Yeah. [clears throat] >> Any other questions or comments to discuss? Okay. Uh, is there a motion for the board of education to adopt the school calendar for the 2026 2027 school year and summer school as presented? >> Some move. >> Second. >> Thank you. Uh, Kathy, would you please call the role? >> Okay. Miss Kick. >> I. >> Miss Lamps. >> No. >> Mr. Ol? >> I. >> Mr. Barabi. >> I. >> Mr. Hunt. >> Hi. >> Miss Gun. >> Hi. >> And Mr. Mayorhead. >> I >> Okay, motion passes. >> All right, next up is adoption of our budget calendar. This one's pretty straightforward. It's just the series of dates uh for our process of reviewing,

030adopting, drafting, adopting, filing uh budget. Is there a motion for the board of education to adopt the proposed budget calendar as presented? >> So moved. >> Second. >> Any discussion on this before we vote? >> No. Okay. Kathy, would you please call the role? >> Okay. Miss Claps. >> Hi, >> Mr. Olic. >> Hi, >> Mr. Baradi. >> Hi, >> Mr. Hunt. >> Hi, >> Miss Gun. >> Hi, >> Miss Kick. >> I >> and Mr. Mayorhead. >> Hi. >> Motion passes. >> Okay. Next up is a very lengthy press release. Um, and before I call a motion on this, I'm going to hand it over to you, Miss Gun, to just if there we got a couple questions in here. If there's any other highlights that you want to make sure we call out

031before we vote on this one. Um, no. I think just the questions we had addressed during the first read, how we wanted to answer those. Just a reminder that this uh press update specifically came out of a lot of the fall policy updates, the legislation that came out of the general assembly this past spring. Um, so a lot of sweets uh suite of material was impacted based on some of the different um like public acts that touched various parts of our policy manual. I suspect there's actually some more uh some more to come in the next uh press update release. Um but I don't know if there were any specific I I don't recall from our last meeting walking away with any questions we needed to get back to you all on as we typically

032do after a first read. So just >> yeah I haven't heard of any guessing everybody's okay with it. >> Yeah. >> Y okay. And so the couple and and everything is I think default because we we're using the no default for the Irish famine one. We're using yes because we already have that language in for the >> instructional material and >> was it only those two? I thought there was three. Okay, just those two. >> It's the edits ones and and we were going to leave the edits uh the way that we had the edits for those two >> public comments for the district chain of command. Yeah. >> Yeah. and it's reflected in your motion. So, >> yeah. Okay. So, is there a Let's make sure we're 120. Yep. Is there a motion for

033the board of education to approve the second reading and adoption of press policies number 120 along with the two D96 edits as presented? >> So, move. >> Second. >> Kathy, would you please call the role? >> Okay. Mr. Ole, >> I. >> Mr. Barati, >> I. >> Mr. Hunt. >> Hi, >> Miss Gun. >> I >> Miss Kick. >> I >> Miss Claps. >> Hi. >> And Mr. Mayorhead. >> Hi. >> Motion passes. >> Thank you. Last item on the agenda for new business is playground equipment. And this one's actually pretty straightforward compared to the others. Uh I know um Mark had given us kind of the I think at the last board meeting like a this is a really good quote. Um, not sure I fully understand the whole cooperative thing, the legality of

034how this all happened, but it does look like a very good quote. And it's, as far as I can tell, it's exactly the same equipment that we saw in our drawings. >> Um, which I think everybody kind of liked. >> No, I guess I just had sort of questions about the quote. Um, I'm not quite I mean I there's like four items on the quote and so I'm assuming there's more more items in it than four items in the in the uh playground the renderings. Is that like the I guess I'm I'm assuming it's been everything's been encapsulated into it. >> That's correct. >> Okay. >> So, are these like just four large pieces of equipment? Like they're considered like one climbing thing? It's not like the tree and then the stairs and then the

035slide all independent. >> Um >> because it just says outbranch structure for 175,000. So I'm assuming that's that whole giant thing that's like in the middle. >> Correct. It's >> I thought the rendering was reattached there. >> No, it isn't reattached. It's just >> there's more than like four items in the playground. So I so I'm not uh like I don't do playgrounds, but it just I was just wanting to make sure that the renderings >> I think if you um looking at the rendering that $175,000 I don't recall the name. The branch out system is that entire big structure in the middle, including what appears to be a slide that's off to the side that's attached to it. >> Yep. >> Then there are the three other structures in there that are all-encompassing of

036a number of probably play activities for students. >> Okay. >> I think that's the >> I think the structure in of itself is quite large. >> All right. Yeah, that's that's kind >> so we could confirm it. >> Yeah. >> I think Yeah, that's a good call. Let's just validate that we all understand that. But that's sort of how I read it, too, because it was it was one piece of equipment for a substantial amount of money. And if you look at it, it's all connected with the nets and stuff. So, I'm guessing that is all one >> considered one unit, so to speak. And then you got the swings and then this bridge thing. That's it looks like the bridge thing is that um two to five premier structure because I think they said

037that was like for younger kids >> and then what I'm assuming then is the song word thing is connected to the thing right behind [clears throat] it in the >> that's sort of >> otherwise it looks to me like there's one extra piece on the rendering that's not on there. But if those are if they say those are connected then that makes sense. >> Yeah. >> And to Dan's point we can just confirm that. But I think it is like if you >> that's all one structure like >> right? >> Yeah. Zoom in on that. Yeah. You see how it's all connected? >> Yeah, that's kind of Oh, wait. There's more pictures. Duh. >> I I mean, I don't have a baseline. I don't do I don't do playground like you said, but I mean

038263 seems like a pretty good price just compared to the other playgrounds that we've done. I know it's a different playground, but that does feel like a pretty good quote compared to what I can recall the others. >> Right. I'm not concerned about the quote. Um I'm more just wanting to make sure we >> making sure we got itemized right in the Okay. Other than that, any other questions for takeaway? >> No. Okay. >> And just to clarify, Mark, we're good to wait till March board meeting to vote on this or do we need to make March cow a special meeting and take action? We can double check that with DA also. >> Yeah, I I probably would encourage board to make the March cow a special meeting where you approve this. just the quicker

039we get the order in and we don't want to be held up by a lead time of anything. >> Okay. >> Well, there was an anticipation we were voting on this tonight. Am I right on that? >> Next meeting >> instead of the regular do it at the cow. >> Okay. >> So, two weeks instead of four weeks. >> Okay. >> Is there the option to for one of us to make a motion to approve it tonight? >> I no [laughter] >> because we didn't list it as an action item. Okay. >> Trying to think. We have done that in the past, but we've always said that we were going to possibly take action and then we listed it as an action item, right? As far as procedure goes for these meetings. >> I can't

040remember doing that. >> We say cost approval here on the agenda. I'm looking to my meeting expert Kathy Pino. >> You think it you think it's we shouldn't do it? >> No. I >> Well, I don't have Yeah. Either way, >> I think we're not >> if it's it's just two weeks from now. >> Yeah. Right. >> And there are some questions. So, I'd rather get you those answers. >> Follow regular procedure. >> Making sure we are [clears throat] >> capturing all of the elements in the plan, >> right? >> Two weeks should be fine. >> Okay. >> And really, I mean, so just kind of repeat back what you said, it probably would be fine if we did it March 18th, but if there's a reason we could do it sooner, just do it

041sooner because then we don't have to worry about the extra two weeks. >> I would. Yeah. >> Yeah. Okay. Okay. So, we'll take away we'll just verify the invoice compared to the D drawings. Make sure everybody's comfortable with that and then we'll come back in two weeks with a special session. If we don't want to vote on it that night, we can always table it or we could take action. So, okay. All right. That is it for tonight's meeting. Um future meeting, no public comment. I'm not seeing anybody new here. Um, future [clears throat] meeting dates, March 4th, committee of the whole will make that a special meeting, 7 p.m. at the multi-purpose room at Ames. March 18th will be a regular business meeting at the in here in Hower at the Learning Resource Center

042at 7, uh, close session if necessary. April 1st is canled. April 15th, regular business meeting, 700 p.m. in the Hower Learning Resource Center. May 6th, committee the whole, 7 p.m. multi-purpose room at Central Elementary. and May 20th regular business meeting at 7 PM in the Hower Auditorium. And with that, this meeting is adjourned.
