001Call this meeting to order. We'll begin with the pledge of allegiance. And I have asked our head girls soccer coach Britney Hamlin to lead us in the pledge. >> I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands. One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. All right, we'd like to uh excuse Mrs. uh Stebons tonight. She's not here with us. Give her an excuse tonight. We u kind of have a light agenda. So, we'll just start right in. First uh item is a consent agenda. Members of the board, has anybody in your review of the agenda looked at anything that you would like to take out of the consent agenda and add I mean and and vote on it independently. Items
0022.4 and 2.1. >> Right. There might at this time it'd be appropriate if principles if you'd just like to say something about maybe new hires or we don't have the junior high here. >> You don't have to name them all. >> Yeah, you don't have to. Just say say yes, we have some new hires and maybe I'll learn their name in a little while. Right. >> Just for the record. >> Just Yeah, just for the record. >> Sure thing. So, we have uh let's see, five new people at the elementary or not the elementary at the high school. Uh >> oh. Uh oh. We have five new people at the high school. Our chemistry teacher is new. Um, our head basketball coach, he's also a sped teacher. He's new. Um, he came to us from,
003uh, NIA basketball program, college basketball program. Um, and then we've got a number of new coaches that we recognized a couple weeks ago or a month ago. Um, and so everybody's kind of in their place. It's been a great couple days and, uh, we're looking forward to the year. >> Thank you. Yes, sir. >> Elementary. At the elementary, we have four new teachers. We have Rita Wilhigh as our sixth grade teacher. She rejoined us. She was with us and was a third grade teacher a couple years ago and she moved to North Carolina and came back and joined us. Um, we have Katherine Gerbowski. She is we we scored with her. So, we get a lot of overseas applications and this was a application that lives just down the road from me and she had
004a beautiful valid Arizona certificate and we snatched her up. So, anyway, she's she's just lovely and happy and wants to be with kids. And then we have um Brienne Smith from the district office joined our first grade team and she's just wonderful. And we have a new U of A graduate whose parent >> they're down >> whose parent has a cabin up on the mountain. So we we snatched her up also. >> I didn't hear what you said. Do I need to make a comment on that? >> I No, I said bear down cuz UVA Wildcat thing. Sorry. >> Good job. Good job. >> And for Mr. Rolloloff. >> And then we have a couple aids. J um Jaylen, oh my goodness, Jaline Petty is our new title aid and then we have Pearla Moya
005is our new sped aid. So couple new faces on the campus and we're we're happy to have them to fill those spots. >> Great. >> Thank you. >> I I did notice that um Britney's here and there was an item about uh volleyball. I mean was it soccer? girls soccer. Um, did you want to fundraiser? Did you want to just take a minute or you could >> What? It says calendars. >> Yeah. >> What What's on the calendars? >> So, they basic just walk around with a calendar for the month and you buy a day. Uh we get so many people in our fundraisers that are kind of tired of the cookies, tired of the popcorn, tired of all the things. And then they always want to donate money, but the system that we're using
006still takes a percentage just like they would if you were selling the cookie dough or whatever. And so they've been want wondering how do we just get the money to the program? And so these calendar ideas are perfect. They if they buy the first, it's a dollar. If they buy the 10th, it's $10. But if every girl sells their whole calendar, it's $300. And so 20 girls, $300 is a significant amount of money for the program to improve the program, buy equipment, get them better training. Um the goal is to hopefully be able to get a week where we go to a camp either at ASU or GCU or some indoor facility where they get a week-long training at with college um coaches to just improve their soccer and get them more looks because nobody's
007coming down here and watching games, but we do have some really great talent coming up. New slant on a fundraiser. >> Yeah, >> like that. >> I like that. >> If my birthday was that month and I bought my birthday, what do I get? >> I will totally make you cookies and bring it for your birthday. >> Okay. Are there any other So, none of these items we need to vote on independently. All right. Can we have a motion then to accept the U consent agenda as it has been presented? I'll move to approve the consent agenda as presented. >> Motion and a second. All in favor say I. >> I. All right. Item uh 3.1, recommendation to approve and adopt a revised expenditure budget for fiscal year 2026. Courtney, do you want to uh
008review that with us and explain? >> Yes, do. Thank you. >> Can you hear me? Okay. >> Okay. Thank you. So this is our first uh this is our first revision for the 26 the 2526 school year and this is just a requirement as we're as we get changes from AD right we make our necessary changes to it and so I'll just go through some of the this is just going to show you a comparison from what we had in our adopted budget to what is now in our revised budget and so you can see that there is a an almost 1% increase in uh per pupil um from $5,13 to 5,13 $13 and some change. Our enrollment projections projections did to go down by just by about one um in ADM. And then our
009carry forward uh for this is our estimated carry forward for capital is $400,000. If we look at a comparison for our budget and this I want to spend just a couple minutes here. So you're going to see our M budget goes up by just over one by about 1.1 Um is this I am not seeing >> this doesn't look like it is the right so this one is not looking >> I think correct >> okay the paper is correct so okay so then there so our that's good yeah let's look at the paper because and then the rest of it should be okay but this is not right I'm not sure what happened with this and I apologize um so this is showing showing an increase of 1.1 million in the M. Um, and then
010you'll notice that there is a decrease in a pretty significant decrease in capital and that's because we're moving we move money from capital to M for salaries. What you don't see in M or excuse me in the capital. So you'll see this um FY26 revision. It's about 446,000. We still have some money from 25 to roll to c to roll over into 26. And so that's going to be an additional about $400,000. So, we're at about at roughly 850,000 in capital for the 2526 school year. Um, we are we're we don't see a change in federal and state grants. We still have that amount. Our impact aid is uh still at 500,000 and then other funds um is going to be that $2 million. So, the but I did want to make sure that I
011I explained that difference in M and capital. And so, that's where that difference is coming from. Oops. I'm sorry. Let's go back one. There we go. So, our M increase again, just that one, just a little under 1% and then uh because of that money that was moved into I'm going to stop using this. Just keep looking at your paper. I'm not sure what happened with this. I apologize. I'm not sure what's going on with that presentation. Um but our so the money moved from capital, our decrease is moving that money into M. Um and then these are federal and state grants are estimated allocations. We work on those. So, we're actually still uh finalizing our 25 grants, our year 25 grants, and then working on our fiscal year 26 grants as well. And so,
012there are several of those. Um, a lot of salaries come out of those out of those grants. And so, we we work on those um throughout the school year. >> Is there anybody who's like officially does everybody just kind of help pitch in and look for grants basically in the office? >> Right. So, the the grants that we we have, we have our federal grants um that are and we have those, you know, those we we work on every year. Um and and that's something that I'll I'll continue to just I'll I'll fill in those grants, right? And I'll work I work with um AD on getting all that done. We did fill we do have the 21st century grant this school year at the junior high and high school. >> Um and that one
013is um that is that was a concerted effort. I had a lot of help actually was from Sarah Bronkey on um on writing the that high school piece of it. U and so we'll we are starting to work on allocating funds that all of those funds have to be put into a before and after school programs and summer learning and there has to be a significant amount for summer learning in that. So we'll be we'll have some great summer programs this school year too. So um but we just that is we're working on getting that set up. We that's going to take just a little bit of time to get rolling and so hopefully we'll see some of that. We'll have some more information about that in in September. >> Okay. >> Um and then
014again, so no no issues or no changes on impact aid. Uh and so um so just the the the big change in this presentation was really just the that change from M and Capital. Yep. Any questions for me? >> When do they decide on our enrollment, our official numbers? Because obviously we get our per people pupil money, >> right? And I I mean and I actually am looking at our I mean I'm I'm kind of excited about our our actual >> because it seems like we're up a little, right? >> It does. And so so I'll actually I don't have the date on that one, but I I will get that date for you as for far as when we have that date on our new ADM and I'll I'll share that with you. >>
015And then I'm I'm assuming that would be before December and then we'd have a revised budget hopefully for December. >> We'll have a revi right. We will. Right. Well, and we should we should and that's what I I looked at the 25 2425 school year and our next revision seem to come through in December. >> Okay. >> Thanks. >> Y >> and one of the big days coming up as you know um our schools are doing our student counts each day because by the 10th day we'll know you know what our 10day count is, who's shown up and who uh who has the 10day withdrawals. But so far looking pretty good. I know even at the junior high we're up over 10% uh at the junior high alone. So enrollment's looking good and that's was
016a good thing for us. >> What about the elementary, kindergarten, first grade? >> So I don't know the numbers from last year. I think we were about 800. We're at 733 right now. So today's warm body count was 733. So I think we're maybe down a little. I don't know exactly if it was 800, but we're down a little if it was 800 last year. Brian, do you remember? >> Okay. >> We averaged about 758, not to include preschool. So, we were at 771 last year with preschool. >> And I can >> which is 20 kids or so. >> And touching on that just a little bit is our um and looking at the counts they've been sending over, our kindergarten cohort is a little bit smaller right now. So, I don't know historically if
017if all of our kindergarteners show up on day one. Sometimes um in different communities, and this is my first year here, so I'm not positive, but sometimes kindergarteners can come in a little bit later, trickle in a little bit later, but >> yeah, but we're hoping. >> Are we doing I can't remember. Are we doing full day kindergarten or two halves? Just one full day. Okay. I don't have any other questions. Um there's any other comments then we need to vote. Can I have a a motion to accept item 3.1 the revised expenditure for the bud budget for fiscal year 2026. >> Have a motion from Margaret. I need a second. Second from Michael. All in favor say I. >> I. All right. 3.2 recommendation to approve the out ofstate travel request for the Blige
018girls soccer team. Um, Mr. Rolloloff, do you want to speak about that or do we want Britney to speak about that? >> Coach Hamlin, would you like to speak about it? It's >> Sure. >> to Gallup, New Mexico. And >> there we go. >> Sure. Um, sorry, I don't know what I'm supposed to do. Okay, >> stand up. >> Um, we did this tournament last year. It's really fun. It gives the girls So, we don't have a lot of teams in fall soccer. It is getting bigger. We added Winslow last year. Um, Sedona Red Rock just joined back in this year, so we're increasing that count. But when we go to our two tournaments within fall, we're just playing the same teams that we always play. Um, and it's just better for the girls to
019kind of see competition they've never seen, learn to adapt on the field. It's good for us coaches to do the same thing. So, this tournament, it's close. It's about two hours away, even though it is out of state. Um, it's a really well-run tournament and sometimes Shello's there, sometimes St. John's day is there, but they also do a really good job as I mean, we played St. John's last year, but we didn't play Xolo and the other two games were somebody new and and it's just again a really great tournament for the girls to see some new teams that they haven't seen before and to keep it exciting. So, we really like this tournament. >> I have a question. You said, did did it are there other schools that have just joined the fall soccer
020that we didn't have last year? >> Yeah, Sedona Red Rock just put a team together. Yeah. So, um, Paige did end up leaving a couple of years ago and going into winter. I do wonder if they'll kind of come back here in the next year or two, but we're constantly looking to increase those numbers and really push the fall soccer, but that was a that was a big one for us was getting Sedona Red Rock back. >> Great. >> Thank you. Any questions? Not. We have a motion to accept the uh out of state travel request for the Blue Ridge girls soccer team item 3.2 as presented. >> I'll move. >> Have a motion for Michael. Second from Margaret. All in favor say I. >> I. >> All right, Mr. Rolloff. We'll uh >> turn
021some time over to you for a district update. Two days worth of update. >> Thank you, Mr. Merrell. Uh we're we're very excited and uh I don't know if you guys been able have been able to see it from where your perspective, but there's really good energy and I don't know how to compare it to previous years, but I really really like the energy. Um the welcome back night we had last week, Tuesday at the elementary school and then Wednesday at the junior high and high school. I've never seen such a positive welcome back night in 29 years of education. That that was the best. uh teachers, students, parents, families, administrators, everybody was chipping in and everybody was happy. Questions got answered. Um a lot lot of positives going on. So that was that was
022um uplifting for me to see the excitement um coming into our schools. Uh last Thursday we were able to bring in a consultant to talk about um professional learning communities as a professional and he's an Arizona person. So it was nice to uh get that whole district PD going and I can tell you the comments I received from the teachers. They were really excited about that as well. So um things are going really well. And then Friday, um, they were stuck with me at the kickoff. And, uh, so they got to hear a little bit about me. And it was it was a little bit more talking than I I really like to do, as um, you guys might remember. I'm not I I like the two-way communication and more collaborative. Um, I don't like
023talking at people, but it was it was a it was a great day and I I kept it to an hour and um, you know, Miss Gab and Mr. Grenell were able to join us for that. So, uh it was really I know the staff really like seeing um some of our school board members out there. Um in your packet also in addition to that uh cell phone we uh we added cell phone phone procedures. Uh there's a new uh law into effect uh for how cell phones are used and over overseen in the state of Arizona. And so um since it's a procedure, it's not a policy. we don't have to vote on it, but we added it in. Um, so it's in alignment with the law. And I know our administrators have done
024really good professional developments with our staffs on on how we're addressing cell phones in our schools to make sure we're we're within legal limits. First day, it was a lot of excitement. I got to start over at the elementary school with Miss Butler. Um, kids were happy. Parents were even happier. teachers did a great job welcoming the kids and it once again just a great start to the school year. Um and so that was great. And then I got to come over to the and by the time I came over to the high school and junior high everything was running smoothly over there. So that was um really really good. Uh in addition last week I was able to attend the chamber of commerce meeting. Uh, Miss Wood invited me to that and along with
025the Chamber of Commerce and we got to talk about a lot of issues in the community and I know um it was really good to see the support from the Chamber of Commerce and Mayor Irwin and and all the folks there were very supportive and want to want to have a um great collaboration with our school district. So, we look to um continue that. And then the last thing I want to touch on is um on Monday we will be having a recess from school in honor of code talkers day and uh that's on Monday August 18th and I just I just wanted to talk for a second about that because I think anytime we can acknowledge our our veterans in our community and uh you know the impact that they had on our our
026foreign wars like in World War II. I know my my grandpa was a World War II veteran and um you know honoring our veterans and our military because I think military like public schools is one of our great American institutions that makes us excellent here in America. And so um so I think honoring local heroes and uh heroes throughout our country is is a great thing and it's a great uh lesson for our students. So I'm glad we're modeling that with our students. So that's it for me. Thank you. I I did have one question. Did we ever find a band teacher? >> We're still looking and I've I've been shaking trees. I know Mr. Grace shaking every tree that we can get to to find someone who's musically inclined could teach band. I've even
027tried to see if we can get people who can flap their hands close enough where maybe a student could lead it, but we've we haven't had a lot of luck with that. So, I know we're getting creative with our students, but it makes us all sad that we don't have a marching band this year, and that's one of our priorities moving forward. >> Yeah. >> And even with the midyear I'm sorry, even if we can find a mid-year graduate to get the ball rolling, or you know, some universities don't graduate in traditional semesters, and we're going to keep looking all the places we know how because we know how important that is. >> Great. >> Quick question. Um, do we have a calendar set up for the following school year yet, Mary? No. When do
028we typically do that? >> It's it's for 26. >> Yes, >> we do not yet. >> Okay. >> We are working on that. >> Okay. Because we Yeah, I have some questions, but that could be later. >> Okay. and I can take those questions so that when we get our calendar committee together, we can look forward to that and maybe we can I've seen some districts where they can adopt, you know, a couple year block ahead of time so we have that all set in stone for years to come. So, all right. Thank you. If there's no further questions, next item on the agenda is call to the public. I'd like to invite anybody that would like to address the board to do so now. like to keep your comments to about three minutes and
029not make them personal about anything towards negative. If it's positive, you can talk tell us, but if it's negative, we don't want to hear it. I'm just kidding. Just kidding. So, it looks like there is nobody here. So, the next item is a u movement. I I need a a motion to adjurnn. >> I have a motion from Michael, a second from Margaret. All in favor of adjournment say I. >> I. Thank you. >> Miss Ford was >> I'm sorry. Our next board meeting we just didn't do what we did. Our next board meeting will be September 9th at five o'clock at this pl at this location. Set.
