001folks it's uh 4:45 we're just going to open this hearing public hearing and turn the time over to uh Kim is that okay yeah we'll let you do the presentation right now this is a public hearing yes this is a public hearing for our instructional time model um anytime that we have a change to our instructional time model we have to um go through the whole entire process that you went through and you approved our original instructional time model so we are doing some slight changes to it and Miss hoffmeier from the junior high is going to present that for us thank you good evening uh so that we have I believe you all have a copy of the instructional time model um but I'm just going to go over some of the the um
002high points of what we're doing with it so this it asks how methods replace instruction that would otherwise be provided in a teacher-led in-person classroom um in this instructional time model we talk about remote learning alternative hours Project based learning and Mastery learning are provided to students who are experiencing extraordinary circumstances these events could include um health safety welfare considerations natural disasters or inclement weather um we do have some attendance tracking procedures that we need to go over as well high school students um it says that Blu High School reallocates any minimum instructional time or instructional hours by course adjustments are aligned under AR 1588 and 15901 on a per student basis these changes include allowing students to spend more time on greater depth or classes requiring additional instruction consists of these minutes enabling them
003to catch up or stay on Pace the initial total number of school days for 20 23 2024 is 170 days this may change due to circumstances such as cancellation or delays due to inclement weather um as we move down classes and attendance procedures all bluid Unified School District classes and courses including um and what I had stated above remote learning alternative hours Project based learning and Mastery learning will be offered they must be entered into the uh sis our student information system and that Synergy this information tracks scheduling attendance and reporting to ad the required steps include the teacher of record entering all assignments grading and attendance into the sis um students may be reported as participating in remote instruction for all or part of the day when taking attendance um and so this is
004really when we're talking about school closures due to weather um or unexpected events such as a water man something like that that's unexpected um and when they are reported as remote learning in most circumstances so the if you take a look at the very the the last piece of it these are some of the ways in which we could have students um turning in assignments so student participation on assignments added to Canvas OR the school website that are either completed from home written assignments provided to students to complete from home or time spent working on projects with a method for reporting participation during a given time frame um and then completion of a project so if any of these these things are met that qualifies as student attendance in a situation in which we are
005not in School due to weather or another unexpected event um and so this just really outlines what we are going to do when students are not in person um and how we are going to provide instruction to them in those circumstances do you have any questions for me yes sir yes um do we still issue uh laptops to all of our students all of our students that are 7 through 12 have have laptops issued to them I believe six 3rd through sixth have classroom laptops correct so k6 we have we're one to one we have student laptops but we don't send them home um in the event of a longer time where we were going to be out or whatever that may be um we would be able to send them home with with our
006students if we needed to preferably grades four five and six rather than going all the way down to kindergarteners because they need assistance on a computer more than they need assistance with pen and paper if they needed that so yeah okay I was just wondering because this curriculum you're developing would be based on most of it would be done on the computer I'm assuming quite a bit would be done the computer yes but not necessarily it it's all up to whatever the grade level decides the work would be so if it's not age appropriate then they could do packets or other alternative assignments that don't require a computer but if something came up Suddenly in like over a weekend and we were delaying we were cancelling inperson School Suddenly at least n or 7 through
00712 would have a laptop at home where they could they would right into the curriculum that's correct and if they for some reason were not able to complete that work from home they would have an opportunity to complete it at a later time as well okay I have a basic question sure so this is our policy for like our school groups and school days does this also um affect like if we had a child that had a long-term illness or so they can utilize these as um making up or being president school because they're participating in the work cor correct right any other questions test the only question I have is when legally we have have to have the next public hearing because we have to have two for this so the next public hearing
008I'll be our next October 17th okay yeah so we have to have two public hearings we'll do that at the next um board meeting and then on that agenda um we will approve the um time instructional time model and then as soon as it's approved I'll upload it to Arizona Department of Education and we can move forward all right thank you possibly we might have to move that board meeting up a week would that app that yeah figured you might with the report that so whatever that board meeting is we'll just do it at that board okay all right I I just wanted to add for anybody that might be viewing on Facebook or anybody in the audience this is not a sharp departure from what we're doing we're not making any differences it doesn't
009impact the scheduling the students it doesn't impact their daily schedule all it does is provides us flexibility in the event that there are interruptions to day-to-day instruction I'll also add that we have no intention of asking the board to remove to go online for any length of time I know there's some rumors going around in some of the States they're going online only the district has no intent to do that we're prepared however to address inclement weather leaking gas lines or what the other things we've suffered over the years and snow days and that type of thing I just wanted to and state championship games and state championship finals that travel a long way that's not in there we need to put that in there without saying thank you do we have actually do we
010have any examples of how it's going to look different like what a packet may look like so it could depend on so there are a couple different things that could be done it could be a written so for example it might be a written assignment um that either could be um it could be something that's submitted online if they have access to a computer to do that or they could submit it when we return to school in person um same things at younger grade levels it would be more I mean it would be more packet based um pieces and I'm not sure that we I think we had discussed um same thing that we we will give opportunities for things to be completed if they don't have access to anything while they're working from home
011um or provide packets if needed to a student you know who doesn't have any kind of online is it going to be the same like per class like in um elementary school so if you're in first grade this is what it's going to look like so then it's already pre-planned and prepared so we don't have a gap correct it would be grade level wide the elementary school would be grade level wide so if you have a first grader this is what all first grade would be doing if you have a second grader this is what all second grade would be doing with most likely k6 all being the same okay so that if you have a first or a sixth grader it's grade level content but it's in the same form format okay and at
012the junior high it would be grade level departments that would be the same a little bit different at the high school just because of the levels of uh you know different departments um but but still try to keep that continuous and would it be sent out via email or something like that that day uh on canvas typically or um and so that's something that as far as the communication goes we'll work on making sure that that's very explicit um on if we have an inclement weather day um on what that would look like for students um and because we'll be coming up on the season shortly um we will start having those conversations with our students and our teachers as well as about what they can look for if there is a you know you'll
013look for this assignment on canvas um or they might print if we know that there is some weather coming we might actually print some things out and have them take that home so that you know if we if we have notice ahead of time then we can do things like that otherwise it would be up on canvas thank you thank you for those that just walked in this is a public hearing based on a proposed instructional time model there'll be another public hearing before the board meeting next month so we'll conclude the public hearing right now and at in 5 minutes we'll start a reg scheduled board meeting
