001yes of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands with liberty and justice for all uh okay um this is a part of the cast of beauty and the beast we're missing some students who were either busy or had other obligations so um it's a fun song it's be our guest and you'll have double parts going because we did have two casts and um yeah you notice we have the beast in back our two bells we have cogsworth and our two lumieres and our two mrs potts and our chip so we just invite you to sit back enjoy and be our guest [Applause] [Music] is [Music] don't believe me is [Music] gathering [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so yes [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music]

002yes [Music] [Applause] [Music] she's our guest [Music] is [Music] [Applause] [Music] hello [Music] time [Music] is [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] uh i d and mr bloom train can you kind of come up here i want to make sure we recognize we had a lot of community members first of all kids that was awesome beautiful give yourself another big granola because that was awesome thank you very much you represented our school and community so well uh i saw it on that i don't know what night it was but i know you were the luminaire and rick was the he was the uh right there he was a beast so whatever cast that was wonderful and i heard the same about every show and we're so proud of you can you make sure all of

003our community members that participated are recognized so we had brian bloomstrand who did all our sound [Applause] which there was no feedback whatsoever way to go um becky evans who was my stage director [Applause] alicia did much of the dance along with some of the students [Applause] and i and i have to call him this dave the builder he did our steps [Applause] deborah jensen all the beautiful things you saw on stage she was in charge of all our props mrs horn was an everyday supporter of everything and we had two that were not able to come [Music] so shanny walin would help backstage and with um costumes and who was my other one oh christy alder helped with the soloists who'd i forget oh and jensen where's jensen our beastly makeup artist [Applause] but

004had it not been for all these people and all the kids the show would not have happened not like it did so thank you for inviting us [Applause] good job kids thank you board what do you think you know i thought i was beyond crying when i watched that performance the first time it brought tears to my eyes because so proud so proud to be a part of that thank you you did an awesome job for everybody that was involved any member of the board like to say anything i thank them for coming thank you for coming tonight and bringing it all back that memory is wonderful thank you so much great great example [Applause] [Music] okay next item on the agenda is recognition of our april br star award recipient dr wright alicia you're

005busy tonight come on up lauren alicia the cruz is our br star come on up alicia [Applause] so not only is she talented in the fine arts department but she's also talented up in the front office anything that we need done she's jumping all over making sure i stay on track and the rest of the office stays on track so alicia does a great job so we want to recognize her for that thank you [Applause] okay next item on the agenda is our consent agenda and board is there any item that you would like to take from the consent agenda and vote on independently after reviewing your packet yeah do we have any personnel here that have been hired that we'd like to to meet maybe not too many no all right so can we

006have a motion to accept the consent agenda as presented motion from chuck have second from margaret all in favor be unanimous mary okay business section of the meeting recommend num 3.1 recommendation to approve the hire of new employees for the 2021-22 school year dr wright you want to go through these positions yes sir do we have any of uh jb do you have any of the maintenance folks is daniel here tonight no daniel's not here tonight and stephen porter just returned he left for a couple weeks and didn't didn't like the job that he went to and he's back with us he's a great employee daniel estrella is also an excellent employee but he's not here tonight okay thank you and don's not here for the best way of the new replacement all right we

007have a motion to accept these new hires emotion from jennifer ii from chuck all in favor unanimous okay item 3.2 recommendation to approve the teacher retention stipend dr dr wright this is a hundred and i mean a thousand seven fifty dollars can you explain what that is and yes sir is it a continuation of things or will it be just a one time yes sir thank you this is a one-time stipend that is paid to all teachers that will be here um i believe the pet is october the 1st of october 2022 the way that uh the 1750 figure was arrived at that's roughly three percent of the average salary which is 58 000 there's still a lot of uncertainty around school funding the striker bill that had been introduced that still places a considerable

008amount of money at risk we're really unsure frankly what it's going to how it'll all shake out but we do have the capacity to provide this the 1750 stipend we recognize that there are inflationary elements that are you know the three percent doesn't make up to seven percent inflation that we're having statewide and maybe closer to eight percent nationwide we recognize that but we felt we feel compelled to do something for our hard-working teachers and so that the recommendation of the board is that we approve very you approve rather our request is seventeen hundred and fifty dollars per teacher those are certified teachers pre-k through twelve and those that are employed in here october first twenty twenty two would qualify qualify any questions from the board i i wonder how this compares to last year

009and what we were able to do uh last year the retention bonus part was is half last this is half of what we did we did 3 500. it also had a higher payout on 301 i think there's a one-time i don't know kicker is what they called it but a one-time incentive on 301 combined the retention in 301 last year actually this school year at the end of this school year the combined will be for those that qualify sixty eight hundred dollars and generally our teachers are gonna all of them will qualify for the retention bonus if they've been here we paid part of that in the fall of last year the second part of that will be paid june 3rd along with the 301 payout that remains so that it's roughly half of

010what the retention was last year last year yes sir and then this 1750 will be in october yes sir okay yes sir all right any questions from the board in regard to that so where did the 1750 come from uh the average teacher salary district-wide is about 58 000 it represents three percent of that figure any other the 301 questions yeah addition to 301 and their base salary and everything else this is truly in addition to that it's a retention bonus there's no further questions we have a motion to accept item 3.2 motion from diana second second for margaret all in favor that would be unanimous also okay item 3.3 a recommendation to approve the junior high and high school course content books as they were presented to us are there any questions or comments

011from the ward about those content books can we go over some of the new things that we're going to be doing i know there's a couple of new classes in high school and whatever questions you have we'll be glad to have you just answered oh you're doing junior high right now yeah never mind junior high in high school junior high and high school combined so speak into that mike because right so um i was wondering if principal yes ma'am can just announce those differences so people can know do you uh lauren's going to come up from the high school i think most of them are at his level we are picking up a couple new additions on let's see page numbers going to be for you in the ap section we have we're going to

012pick up all of our other core classes england we've had ap sections in english math and social studies this next year we're picking up for science so we're going to have this first year we'll have ap environmental science and we were trying to get ap biology i think we that's why we included it we weren't sure if we're going to be able to get somebody that would be able to have that class in their class load so we wanted to include it in case we did get somebody that could handle that there's still a possibility that we could pick up the ap bio for sure we are doing the ap environmental science and that could be anywhere from a freshman level course all the way up to a senior level course you have to have

013three sciences for for your graduation requirement and some of those upper end students who want the three lab sciences to be the high end this will allow them to pick up ap environmental as a senior instead of you may be picking up earth science as a senior so this is a great addition to our course roster so we have the ap and the bio and another new one that we've that we're looking at is we have the ability to do english 101 and 102 on campus this next year so we have two individuals that need qualifications to be dual enrollment certified and so we're looking at expanding the talent program is a great program that we partner with nau or excuse me mpc we want to be able to to bring that to more of

014our students here on site we know kids do better when they have a teacher present in the classroom so we have a lot of kids who have opted to not take the talon english 101 102 through npc just because it's a virtual classroom so having teachers on campus this next year is going to increase i think our numbers of the kids that we have doing the english 101 and 102. we have a large segment of our population that are taking cte nava classes and the english 101 102 fits better with their schedule than an ap english class so this gives those students an opportunity to do that on campus as well and we're also looking at doing english their junior year and english 102 their senior year to meet the requirements of junior year english

015and senior year in english we have to make sure that they are matching up with the standards for each specific class year but this will open up the door for kids to who may be restricted in their classes that they have to take to give them a another elective if they're able to do those two classes in two separate years so we're excited about the offerings that again we're bringing higher classes to our class load but it's able to be extended down to kids who may not have had a chance to take a college class before so we're super excited about it yeah it's cool yeah yes mr president may add something lauren um into the board one of the things that we have discovered is that if these kids get to high school age

016kids get to take a class they have some success some of them are going on in pc and they would otherwise not have done that some of them are really taking advantage of it they're graduating with an aaa and so they're two years of college in and many of those are those that are also qualifying for like the lumberjack or asu scholarship and so they're down to two years and most of that's paid so it's a great opportunity to springboard that mr webb you want to add to that another thing that we're bringing in through mpc is they're they're going to be offering a science class with which will allow those students who are doing nava classes to come away with an aaa they can they were just missing that one class and that one

017class is now added to our asynchronous class offerings so kids will be able to pick up that last credit to get their aaa that's cool i think this is really good because it cuts down on no driving time for these kids a waste of hours and i've seen kids way over schedule themselves just to get in an extra class because they don't think about the time it takes them to drive back and forth so they're safer here you can watch them yes also my understanding is npc now because the state is now allowing kids even their sophomore year to take dual enrollment classes is that correct and are we offering that they can yes they can take like we have students right now who are taking dual enrollment with us through cabinet making our graphic

018design so both rice mr rice mr peterson students can choose to take dual enrollment classes and credit with them as a freshman sophomore so they've been able to do that awesome if i could add one more thing mr president jennifer you had a question too on ap and advanced placement some of those courses we're also looking at trying to expand the asu open learning lab to provide specific courses for students that want maybe mandarin chinese they want to take a high-level language i want to assure the board the kids that want to go to tier 1 school the luminaire mr lawler he's going to stanford so the ones that want to go to tier 1 they're still able to qualify they have this through ap and the rigor is there where we need to improve

019and we're working on is on the curriculum side is our kids in the middle the avid program helps kids realize hey i can do this too many of these children are going to be first generation college students and that's exciting once our kids get into college they graduate at a much higher rate than the surrounding schools i mean by three times the amount it's just getting them there and helping them see that there is an opportunity i wanted to also just recognize the hard work mr webb and his staff yes gosh has uh they don't understand when you're trying to create the schedule and you're having to meet the needs of kids that are very struggling they're in ninth grade in the reading at the fifth grade level and then you have kids like and

020mr lawler said i could share it he's he's been reading the highest at the college level since he's been a freshman and lower we have them at all levels that's not easy so we're trying to provide those students all the students an opportunity we need to get the kids in the middle we need to move them forward and the kids at the bottom end academically that need help we need to find a more organized way of doing that the curriculum that you approved is going to achieve part of that and so i also want to commend mr webb and his staff as well as the junior high and the elementary teachers our our kids are like other kids in america a lot of these kids have have suffered from um the effects of this pandemic

021and the the strife the political strife and all the stresses many of them are a year to year and a half behind and we've been saying it we're not going to catch up inside of here but i think we have made up ground and we'll see the results on the 25th are still not going to be stellar but i think 20 20 23 in may when we get them the end of may of 2023 we're going to recognize some of the work that we've been doing that they have been doing these staff members and teachers and administrators and i just want to commend courtney and lauren and ryan for their contributions here because it's not going to notice scheduling we could do something much easier and less expensive and it wouldn't meet the needs of

022our very top students it wouldn't meet the needs of the kids at the very low end we're trying to reach them all thank you any other questions regarding junior higher high school court content lauren um if i recall when i talked to you about the course content book we discussed the computer the programming class that we were offering one an npc and now mpc is going to have it as a navit class correct that's correct so see in that one offered through npc is four seniors and so we we're taking that one out of our course offering we actually had one of our the members of the tech department ruth mcbride was teaching that class and she was you know she was working her tail off doing that and her tech duties so it just

023was too much for so it was perfect timing with npc picking up that course so we have quite a few students who are interested in that field so it's going to be nice that they can continue that now with the nava program yeah thank you lauren and courtney so there if there's no further questions can we have a motion to vote on item 3.3 regarding the high school and junior high course content book for 2022 and 23. promotion from chuck a second from diane all in favor looks to be unanimous also okay item 3.4 a recommendation to approve the social sole source provider advancement via individual determination that's avid we had an avid presentation by mrs reek but a month ago and she explained what this is and i do believe we accepted that program

024now that we're just working towards it being the sole source yes yes sir and for accounting for um auditing purposes and to follow the statute anything over ten thousand dollars for a single person has to be approved as a sole source provider and rationale must be provided the rationale is simple it's there's no one else that has the continuation of the program if you had mixing programs it wouldn't work we this is a k-12 approach and so because it exceeds ten thousand dollars we need the board's approval uh to uh name app excuse me to name this um provider's sole source avid is the sole source yes sir provider any questions regarding that were understood i mean that understood well all right we have a motion to accept item 3.4 for avid to be the

025sole source provider emotion from chuck the second from margaret all in favor be also unanimous okay item 3.5 which is also along that same lines this is the nexus coalition friends of navajo county anti-drug correlation for junior the junior leadership academy this is also for a approved sole source provider because it has a cost of twelve thousand dollars yeah this is we do this every year this is i understand what this is a long-standing program yes sir and it's valuable and it's a summer program it exceeds the ten thousand dollar limit so we must have the board approved it as well in order to proceed um ages 10 through 12 are the participants during this i think it's 10 through 14 what this states i'm sorry ages 10 through 14. yes sir did i say

026something 12 i'm sorry 10 10 to 14. wait wait wait eliminate those two years that's right any questions regarding that all right can we have a motion on item 3.5 i have a motion from diana second from margaret all in favor that's again all right uh boys we've been through this pretty quick dr wright would you uh give us a superintendent's report absolutely i received a both a note and an email from the gentleman that runs the white mountain country club golf course and he was complimenting a coach ron everingham and his team he said without exception it was the most well-behaved most well-mannered group of kids they've ever come across now that every time i hear that i want to share it because i need to do a better job of sharing the good

027things that are going on and to recognize coach everingham's effort and those those students that are on that golf team so i appreciate them and i wanted to recognize that we saw the beauty and the beast i don't know how many i think most of you were able to see at least one of those uh showings and uh as you saw it was really it was the best most uh amazing high school production i've ever seen and i would say it rivals stuff at the collegiate level it was just entertaining well done and so the amount of work that went into that and and there were community members that donated a significant amount of money that did not want to be recognized but you need to know as a board there was those funds to

028make it go forward those were community donations the hours that went into it there were hundreds of hours donated on the parent side the community side the one contractor that was there he's working on a place at my house he's always busy and he stopped to help with those things and so there are a lot of people that came in and made that work and it meets the needs of a whole group of kids that that's how they express themselves and man are they good at it so i'm just really proud of them and mr bloomstrand and teresa and all those others that have done the hard work they do that all the time that's what they do it's who they are and so we're very fortunate to have them i i would say in

029regard to that i've watched a lot of the plays here at the high school they've all been good but i think this took another level this brought it to another level and i think the standard has been set that's going to be hard to maintain in the future and i i i'm sure these leaders can do it because they did it this time on a shoestring i think also it's a good representation if you have the community support and you're working together to help kids you can do great things and so that's what our community has been about for a long time and i think that's important the high school band if you remember they had a they got a score of excellence the second highest rating if you remember five years ago it sounded

030like pots and pans being banged together jennifer only did an amazing job i'm not exaggerating it was scary wasn't it but we loved him and they kept playing and it was it was it was tough and they're starting to really come together jennifer i think it's their fourth year with this is it not it shows and we said just stick with it i think we had 13 kids then 17. the the drum line within a couple years was really organized quickly but those other instruments are difficult but now we're starting to grow that program we've offered it down to the elementary level at some level this year too and we want to try to expand that and the junior high jennifer and teresa and mr bloomstrand they they're they're amazing the the groups of kids

031and the diverse how many sections they have i don't know all i know is they get here very early and they leave very late so we're very proud of those programs and so this band received the second highest rating at eastern arizona's college festival we want to recognize them as well and jennifer olney within her efforts there for interested community members at on april 26th at 5 30 pm in this room we're gonna we'll start and outline the sex ed committee well that ought to get some headlines there people are paying attention now so what we're gonna do is that by statute there's a prescribed way that you have to flow through this and there's certain hearings that have to occur this takes time it's not a one meeting it's going to take time principles

032if you'd return and ask your staff members faculty and staff who wants to participate there's not a limit on participants i'll go ahead and head the community up we'll get it running and we'll explain the parameters and then what we're going to do is present what we've been doing and then we'll we're open to committee input then at the end of that i'll take from the committee i'll take a probably consensus and an idea and i'll have to come back to the board for its approval of of what we're doing this is going to take us probably up to the beginning of next school year or certainly through the summer it will probably be in august before we're we're done we don't start teaching this if we do teach it um it doesn't start till

033sixth grade we don't teach this to kindergarteners so some of the urban legends that are out there we're not doing that um and we'll show you what we've been doing and what the programs are doing and anybody that comes in an outside provider is going to have to understand we have a set curriculum that you must follow you can't deviate from it can't go off script and so we'll make that i have talked with my administrators without exception they feel it is important to do they feel their perspective is we're not starting before sixth grade and we want to keep it science-based and and keep the politics out of it and just share the information that the kids need to know to keep themselves healthy and safe and so for those interested community members what

034we'll do we'll put out an all call we'll put out on the the website we'll put it on the marquee and then just word of mouth the 26th in this room at 5 30 we'll have the kickoff meeting and so that's that's where we're at with that any questions from the board on that topic okay you can also email mary ford that's m4 brusd.org i will provide in june we may have need to call for another levy adjacent ways levy there's two important projects one of which is at the porter mountain turnabout i don't know the i would as long as we consolidated what four years ago four or five years ago four years ago this week k through six when we went k through six since then uh release time mornings and afternoons it's

035busy the first couple weeks of school it's backed up to the 60 and so we've had some narrow misses with children almost our kids running across the street after school to their homes in one instant a city worker with a semi truck almost hit the kid came so close it bumped the child and the driver had a heart attack well at that time i started working with the town it's been over two years we said we've got to figure something out well we don't have the resources on our own to do it but we're working state county and then there's some covet funding federal funding we have adjacent ways that is money that can only be spent ingress egress on our property and have to do with a very narrow scope of of purposes and

036so if we first have to go to the state to see if we're approved to use those funds that way if we are then i'll form a committee explain to the committee what the deal is how much we would love you for that and and move forward the other important project that we have that we're trying to get interpretation to see if adjacent waste can be used for is in front of the high school we get a river that runs through it in the monsoon and then it freezes when we have snow and then it gets hot and cold at night it's a slip and trip we have people slipping and fall every year we had two this year one of our employees is still in fmla from a slip in that area and so

037we had the state facilities board director out here evaluating porter mountain for weatherproofing which is really painting and and weatherproofing from cracks chuck joined us there's the floors that are have moved because we did the civil engineering and pulled the water from underneath the foundations no longer being undermined by that so the floors have moved an inch and a half two inches in some cases and so we've got verbally the state's commitment to help us out with that we're in the process already roger and jeff have done an outstanding job of keeping on top of that the roof needs to be replaced ac units need to be replaced the paint job alone is probably three or four hundred thousand dollars so we're looking at probably a million five in work or more maybe two million

038but that's going to come from the state it won't come from the local taxpayer we're working on drainage behind that facility as well at the high school the project that was approved is already there with the gym the old gym the main gym rather and the boys and girls locker room areas that are joining the stadium there's leaking behind that and there's that roof needs to be replaced and that's already been approved we still have a few other projects that i won't belabor the point too much it's sufficient to say that we're we're continuing to press the sfb to fulfill its obligations and we're doing our part on the facilities to make sure that we're providing the preventative maintenance and then we're lobbying chuck spent a couple hours with me touring with sfb the nowhere

039serious and we're going to continue to lobby for our students in our community i i don't have any other i do have one more we have hired lauren's biology teachers also going to be our head girls soccer coach play collegiate soccer science teacher right out of college we're excited about that and so um that's a hard to fill position and we're making a pretty significant headway on our staffing we're on we're on track we're not done yet but we're on track and that's there's no questions from the board mr president that's that's all i have i don't have a question but you've been on top of the state since you got here trying to get these projects oh my focus on trying to get these projects done and they'd still be sitting there if you

040hadn't yeah thank you for a while they didn't like you very well or they were afraid of you or something i don't know as long as they keep approving that and we get funded it's good well proving it and getting it done are two different things yeah but we'd still be sitting here worrying about a lot more than we are right now thank you i second that and not here maybe can i just make a cake yeah um so the state we're maintenance guys okay and so when we go to battle for these grants and try to get these hundreds of thousands literally millions of dollars they they don't have a tendency to listen to us all i got to do is make a phone call to dr wright he makes a phone call he

041sends emails out and things happen so his support is you know 50 of what's getting all of these uh and and we're talking probably close to five million dollars in grants by the end of next year and projects that are going to be underway and it's his support behind all this that keeps this stuff going thank you margaret for mentioning that well there are a lot of people in this room that haven't been here longer than he has and when he came we had so many projects oh yeah that had just sat still because we didn't have any money and the state just kept saying no no no no no and so he became a friend of the state many trips down there many phone calls a lot of time a lot of frustration and

042with jeff too so thank you always reminds me of the princess and the pea you can take that for what it's worth maybe you can sleep better knowing that these contracts are underway maybe you know that doctor right there are a couple things that i think and i'm not speaking for the entire board but a lot of people have come to me from the community that want some board input and i think we need to get it get you looking into it so we can possibly get them on the agenda so we can do some action and maybe uh you know vote on something at least get some information first one is uh tax credits a lot of people have come to me and they said you know i give my tax credit i don't

043know if it's getting spent where i asked it to be spent is there any way we can have that tracked so that they can they can do that so with so that we can publish every now and then some you know this many dollars was given to the the drama department or the stalker or football or whatever it was so that we can get that out there so people because they they think it's just kind of goes into a dark hole here at the school and goes into this fund that you know gets used for you know candy bars for the office or something like that that helps people see the spots that really need donations right absolutely and along with that and this came from athletic sponsors not really sponsors but people that are

044interested in the lakes at the school they would like to know if if that money is going towards the purchase of new equipment um uniforms that kind of stuff because they see kids wearing the same uniforms they've been wearing for 15 20 years and they want to know if that money is enough or you know where that money's going for them and also to pay the coaches and they didn't particularly say that the assistant coaches but perhaps the the head coaches maybe get a little bit more money to keep them here so we could stay competitive and not have a turnover like that if you guys can come up with something and bring it back to the next meeting i think it would probably be useful any other questions or comments from the board in

045regards to that make next year easier yeah it might make next year easier if we can get some things like that on the agenda so we can vote on them yeah i had a comment from a friend that um when her taxes were due was going to have to pay and you can right contribute she contributed a sizable amount to the blue ridge robotics club and she got a little cash register receipt but that's all she's gotten and she was kind of hoping to get something some better acknowledgement of that maybe we can send cards out for people that don't aim the the board needs to accept those donations one thing so when the board accepts them we always send a letter and we sign i sign it so i'm not aware of that donation

046okay make sure it is coming to the board for its approval but that is our practice to recognize them and we do in every instance because it's important we don't take those those dollars are hard earned and we appreciate it but i appreciate i'll look into that for you mr waldo yeah and then if i might add mr president operationally we're going through right now to see where can we tighten our belt we're struggling in transportation what adjustments if any need to be made to make sure we have enough drivers and take care of local students as well as primarily local kids first and then whatever adjustments that we make we'll uh we'll be glad to present those i'll also remind the board that we'll have our annual presentations um in august it shows about

047what we did last year what we're doing this year the first board meeting in august if there are other elements that the board like to see presented in advance of that we could do that in either june or july thank you in regards to contributions um i totally agree we need to have some type of um clear definition on how we handle that because many times and personally i've experienced it where we've submitted a significant contribution in the past like we paid for all the track uniforms coming from my husband's office and not once have we ever received a note so we could use that appropriately for his business taxes as a sponsorship so we need to do better and ensuring that it's recognized because we need to be able to use that for tax

048purposes too and and these are always you know several thousand dollars worth of contributions so i don't know how we can go about that because i don't know if where you know like when we give the check to xyz person is that coming to the district office so they know so i think that sometimes we'll get the information but a lot of the time we don't so if it's large any any donation of any size should go through the board for two reasons one for just as you said we we need to know about it because if they're if we're going to receive a donation on behalf of the school we need to make sure it's it's accounted for and then recognized two i think what happens is people that are well intended are helping

049they're going directly to the team of the coach or to the a.d or just or just bringing in their uniforms and it's well intended but we should be recognizing that so i'll work with we need to provide some training to principals ads [Music] head coaches and even one case i know we have a brand new scoreboard we didn't pay a dime for that you know and the soccer field came from somewhere we need to figure out who donated so we can recognize them and then also you know it's it's a significant right well for something like a scoreboard especially i think it would be nice to put something on the scoreboard saying donated this one has it recognizes the practice the medical practice on it yeah but you're right mr walter we could do something

050that says i might say i recall several years ago when diane jackson was doing the tax credits i remember getting a little receipt but also i got an email and it had uh it was a one-page thank you thing had blue ridge logo and color and thank you for your donation and it itemized exactly where the donations went and i haven't seen that i've given the donations but i haven't seen that in the last couple of years okay i think that to me it seemed very worthwhile good practice but i i think maybe right donations are important and then when some person collects a donation like basketball team for example they're asking for a banner donation of four to five thousand dollars and when that banner never is seen on any basketball games it makes

051it very hesitant for a person to donate again that that's why all donations and fundraisers must be board approved right now they're happening and they're not some of them are not and we're trying to get our arms around that but all donations all fundraisers must be board approved that's a recent auditor's change that we we're abiding by but it's going to take us the better part of this year and the first part of next to get that message out but if you hear of those please email brenda and i directly so we can follow up on it well it needs to be right at the heads of clubs and anybody that's in receipt of anything yes i would say if we establish like a minimum amount right you know if they give uh you know

052200 or more that they get some kind of a note or an email or something from the sponsor of that club or the president of the club or somebody representing club and then also it would be nice to let that person know exactly what it was used for where what the intent is for it to be used and i think we'll have a lot more repeat customers but if if they give the donation and they get a little cash register receipt and that's it you're probably not going to get another one that's a good point that's a good point that's yeah the irs i don't know if they're going to take just that cash register receipt i yeah i don't know who's going to be responsible for that but i think it's important business office

053up district office we'll get it figured out right okay and that should be aimed at every new team sounds like a lot of extra work i'm brendan already on it you don't take money personally right yeah right um another thing is i want to make sure that we include um like it was brought to my attention that our drama team doesn't have our theater team does not even have like a coach or an assistant coach so maybe we can reevaluate that because all of these people that put hundreds of hours in in excess of sometimes like a track coach received absolutely no compensation so to ensure that our sports teams and our other arts and extracurricular teams all of them have an opportunity and i think that we'll get better donations that way too thank

054you sounds good anyway kind of open a can of worms with that one yeah it's okay i bet i open another one [Laughter] kate this is really going to open a can of worms a lot of people are coming to me and want a four day week and i if if i remember right we promised that we would stick with the schedule for five years so that we wouldn't create so much confusion because i think there was one four year period that we had three different things going on and i felt sorry for the kids that adapted to those so i don't know what we can do about that but i think we need to be looking into it and i think we need to know what it would involve if it would save us

055any money or i i just you know i'm a little hesitant because i'm an old school type person i like the five days but we're running a lot of stiff competition with four days and you know it looks like it's successful in some places maybe not in others i i don't know but i i would like for us to do some groundwork i'd like to know what the administrators think i'd like to know what the teachers think and i'd like to know what the community thinks and so i think we need to have some some work put into that okay if it's permissible this time is permissible to the board what i'll do is i will put an agenda item the next for the may 12th to enable me to establish a committee and then

056we will probably not do this until the early of next fall there's no way to get this just to be clear right way to get this done coming here okay but i i think for the board meeting can you have us some statistics to look at i you know like yes i know that's a lot of work and it's only a month to get it together but you know i'd like to hear from the high school and the in the junior high elementary what your thoughts are and what maybe what some testing maybe you've looked into some testing scores and how they're you know affected that way so i you know so we have some numbers in front of us and maybe some financial numbers too i don't know how that i think we can

057wait for that i think it's going to be a several month vetting process so maybe we can just announce that we are entering the phases and then allow this group or committee that gets formed because i know it's there's a lot of information and i know it's going to take every single department and every you know like how will this impact i think giving us time is really important to do it right i just think giving direction why is giving people direction and not having it come in front of the board until later okay if it's just this is a bad year to ask people to do something like that okay then if it's permissible what i'll ask the board is to permit me to establish a a forward committee of stakeholders all educational stakeholders

058that we normally do and to do that sometime in the fall of 22 to begin it but to jennifer's point this is a nine-month process or something but i understand i i get calls like that as well and i know that when we're interviewing people too they're considering show low or they consider now shallows four day we're five so it's it's a there are other elements things have changed last five years and so i i think it is important that we're not telling death to the community and we'll listen and take that feedback and then and then uh you know i'm more than willing to do that more than willing to happy to do the formal announcement of the formation with the permission by next board meeting yes then we would follow up after the

059school starts on how it was formed and then give community members an opportunity to volunteer to be part of that yes okay i had the idea i think there are a lot of people though too thanks for expanding on that there are a lot of people too that know this this is a catch-up time and they're concerned not enough time being spent right you cut out a day so you have to look at it from both sides yeah that's why you know ultimately i want to see some numbers and some testing scores before we make everything is messed up because of what we missed so that's going to be hard to get okay the next the next can of worms that whenever i'm in a conversation yeah i've had three things i've never been a

060conversation about the school these are the things that people bring up those two and transportation and class size you know and the transportation is a burn a saddle of some people we're sending buses to white river and they'll say you know i'm looking at those buses there aren't any kids on those buses so and i don't know how many kids were hauling i don't know cost wise what it's taking to do that i i don't know but there are people in the community that are pretty concerned about that and then the other argument is is we're bringing kids from outside district into our school on open enrollment and they're increasing the schools the class sizes and limiting the number of hours educationally that the kids that live industry can receive so you know those are

061just some concerns i don't know how they'll be answered but i think we need to look into that if it costs wise and whatever if it pleases the board on the operations side we're looking at transportation from a driver's standpoint but we're having a harder time finding drivers so we need to look at that and say does it make sense economically it ties up two drivers the second on the class side open enrollment is a whole separate issue every school is subject to open enrollment but schools may also establish their capacity so with if it pleases the board i'll make a presentation on classroom capacities that we will establish what it looks like based on our current projections and you know what i can give you an update on all of that so you know

062where we're at and then well frankly we've had annually we've always had the board approve our open enrollment policies now they're very narrow in the state stipulates them anyway but it is still the the way that works superintendent suggests [Music] provides the capacities and in our case i'll have the board review it and ask for your approval um i just think it's a good practice we've done it like that for seven years and so if that timing works for you we'll put that on agenda item as well what do you think i think that's something we need to look into now so we can have some answers you know those are the same three things i get drummed with just about every time okay well a lot of people don't know that we can cap

063at different yeah levels yeah well there any other direction that any members of the board would like to see us move in the upcoming months i think we're going in a lot of directions yes that's a lot of directions at once but you know i'm trying to represent the people that all are at me all right next item on the agenda is call to the public and we invite the public to make comments to our request of the governing board regarding items that are not listed at this time elsewhere on the agenda those wishing to address the board are asked to submit a request to address the governing board form available from the secretary of the governing board which is mary ford members of the board may not discuss items on the agenda therefore action

064taken as a result of the public comment will be limited to directing staff to study the matter of scheduling the matter for further consideration and discussion at a later date the operating roles of the public are as follows individual time limit is three minutes per person and time cannot be seated to another individual so if there's anybody that would like to address the board right now we'd love to have you bring some info can you can you can you fill out the form for mary got him thanks this is just part of the open meeting laws we have to have the names of people that make comments thank you kara messi caramasa yes i am a citizen here so i do not excuse my allergies i was outside most of the day i don't have

065any students at school right now but i am a former educator so i'm very interested in what's happening these days in school and one of the things i had read and was that the arizona arizona school counselors went to a training in i believe it was chicago a couple of weeks ago the national conference on social emotional learning and i don't know if any of our counselors have gone and i'm i don't know how to get that information so dr wright if yes ma'am i can answer that they did not attend that oh okay and in fact we haven't had the social emotional learning that is anything under that is really student support it is not connected to critical race theory it is in chicago and there are trainings that are taking it that direction

066ours is towards specific support guidance counseling and that's it it doesn't get into the other elements of of critical race theory and we have not participated in those trainings and there were two things the other thing was that i know mr pico was talking last meeting about a junior leadership and he did mention that one of the components was sel and again i am interested can we see the curriculum for that it's for fourth and fifth graders um may it starts may 12th through the 17th it is federally funded sure so absolutely what i'll need to do is follow up with the county i'll work with mr pico to gather that um i think the real important distinction is that uh geographically those two the social emotional learning in our area means something very different

067than oregon well that's good to know yeah it it does and so for but we've even tried to change some of the terminology if it's going to be student guidance we call it student guidance we're trying to stay away from that phrase because it is used differently um it's not used that way in ours it's not associated with critical race theory or any of those others it is in some areas for sure um so i can provide that for you i'll work with mr pico um if you could give me a week i'll have i'll have that available in some way shape or form either online or hard copy for you most likely online i appreciate that that's right okay if we can read this i gave dr wright your email address name okay what's

068it on there yes ma'am it is yeah can you read that former math teacher i think i can read it i graduated high school and snowflakes oh that's pretty good i can read your uh telephone number well i'll we'll follow up with you make sure you get that okay thank you yes ma'am thank you next would be janelle [Music] good evening my name is janam the question i have is regarding you just approved for the friends of the navajo county anti-drug coalition so my question is and then you can get back to me later is how many drug issues vaping in the bathrooms things within that nature has happened at the junior high in high school and then what's being done about it so if you guys can get back to me i'd appreciate it

069yes ma'am we will i can tell you anecdotally a little bit we've taken a couple of steps we've noticed that the door the bathrooms that are designed all bathrooms are designed even with doors when you open it up there's a privacy wall we've removed those doors from the entrance and we're having less problems it's still private but we're not having the vandalism problem vaping at the junior high in high school is a problem just like it is everywhere what we're doing about that we'll provide you a little presentation and tell you i'll give you the data that we have and take and talk to you about the steps we're taking to try to mitigate that we do that yes ma'am okay next one is here we go the next person is uh i can't read

070this jennifer bramhall i know it's perfect penmanship cursive mixed horrible penmanship i never received any rewards because i'm a science person you don't have to worry about that all right so i'm here under another hat for our non-profit it's project elevate and camp grace i wanted to just announce that this will actually be for our entire state of arizona but we were awarded a grant through asean track to provide free day and summer camps for the entire year we can have over a thousand students that's involved and we're hiding all the math and science components into large projects that these kids are going to be doing so we're really excited of all the stuff that we're offering we already had over 50 kids every single week that signed up and most of them are from

071our community and we have it open to all the other ones so i wanted to let you know it's really exciting the two stipulations is you could not be a church or you couldn't be a school to get the funding and we're neither one so we're really excited about it and we're going to be opening up opportunities for teachers to get paid quite substantially so the state required that we pay 25 higher than their currently our current hourly rate to be able to have teachers come for two hours every day and help us with the program so woohoo yippee yeah congratulations i'm kind of excited too because my grandkids have enrolled already the good ones the googles i want to see are here uh next person would be colleen and olivia i'm sorry hi thank

072you so much um i talked about this last meeting and uh anybody get back to me it was the whole issue with cnn being shown in our classroom um because of like sexual misconduct with their employees now i know that that was a mr dr wright had said something about it being like a hollywood issue that you know there's a lot of sexual misconduct with fox news and cnn and msnbc and all across the board which i get but upon further research i'm only pulling cnn for sexual misconduct problems with including minors and pedophilia um just for instance the cnn there was a producer back in december two of them actually john griffin and rick selby who were soliciting underage photos of a minor the one was and the other one was arrested for multiple

073accounts of trying to enlist unless unlawful sexual activity of a minor it was a constant thing that kept going on now i do realize that the one of the head joe the ceo zucker was let go or resigned since and i don't know if that was the main problem but there's many instances throughout i mean there was one with the jeffrey toobin exposing himself on zoom i know a lot of people know about that um i personally would not want my child to be watching anything on a live or you know even a pre-broadcast that comes up with this a lot of the people that were fired chris como donnell don lemon's actually still there he was accused sexual assault chris cuomo was actually accused of sexual misconduct and had to leave i do understand

074that that happens a lot but like i said my concern is the pedophilia part of it and that this is almost acceptable from this news network now i'm not saying push right wing push left way there's cbs msnbc there's abc and they do have sexual misconduct with adults between men and women and that and that that's just unfortunately part of our society i get that but when it crosses the line into minors that's just not something that i think should be on our students tvs on top of that they're backing and i know this is still controversial the disney elites that were coming out the disney ceos and things that were the higher up executives pushing the do not say gay bill which that's not part of it and we've i'm sure we've all done

075our homework and that's in florida but things trickle down and they come through and they trickle to different societies and a lot of that gets misinformation when cnn is pushing that it's okay and that it's right wing to be you know going against these ideologies and what's it going to hurt it just seems like more of an agenda that's being pushed instead of an open conversation so the children can come to their own thought process maybe talk to a person of authority like you know a principal a teacher ask their take and come to their own conclusions instead of getting this shoved down their throat i personally don't feel that certain things like sex ed and things should be taught to children under sixth grade which i'm i'm all for another thing too is when

076they're pushing this russian disinformation and they're pushing all this information and that's and that's on a lot of size but come to find out um they're reading their words from before and saying oh no we were sorry but they're shoving it down the throat without giving people an open mind and kind of putting it out there the way they're supposed to be doing but might like i said my main and there's plenty of newscasts that go on left side and on right side and we can mesh them together by all means that's part of america my problem is the pedophilia and the heart and if they're in engaging in this which it is documented and they've been arrested and charged problems things like that might want to start thinking about if this is going on

077in their network maybe it shouldn't be going on in our school system just my thoughts abc msnbc all that they push a different narrative than fox news and oem news newsweek which are newsmax which is not even in our schools that i know of which is fine but this part is where we need to protect our students and our children so that's why i thought of it okay thank you firstly um i think i told you i'd follow up with mr webb and i'd call you and i didn't that's my fault i will do that this next time i will say it's also it's in every instance parents may opt out if a parent said i don't want my kids watching cnn they won't watch cnn that kid can be excused without without any repercussion

078that the balance that we have is is this is just the idea of censorship is trying to make it appropriate for the age and the other side of that is we're using those things i don't want to take tools for my teachers that kids need to see that it's important but we are trying to separate it's becoming increasingly difficult to keep academics and keep the politics out of schools i don't care far right far left whatever keep it out of the schools and so we're trying to teach academics teachers do need some flexibility our jobs try to support them in every way we can having said that our principles it is their job to make sure they understand the content that's being taught in no case should we be showing an entire episode of fox

079or cnn without any dialogue and purpose normally those are small little tidbits segments that are shown and there's discussion but i will say that anytime a parent views something as inappropriate they can you can opt out of that our teachers are accommodating i'm very reluctant to say just a blanket can't use this any longer it we in no way shape or form support harming children or any organization harms children we're not saying that there there is a difference between administration and the front line people we should not be showing things that are that we don't know how they're going to come out because the teacher ultimately is responsible for the content that's going on in that classroom it's a balance we want to support our teachers too we want our kids to be educated we

080do apprec we do a really good job of that can we do better probably so um but are we doing a pretty acceptable job and i think we i think we are but i will commit to you let me follow up with i i'll say probably junior high and high school i don't think it's being shown in elementary and let me see how it's being used what networks i i mean it's a pretty good suggestion is in making sure we're varying those i mean it shouldn't be just foxy and in there they're on both sides of the aisle there are plenty of outlets and we could mix those up as well and so let me get with my principles and i'll follow up with you may i call you colleen you said i couldn't read

081that well i guess i put my glasses on okay thank you i appreciate the comments thank you any other individuals like to dress aboard if not can i well announce we need to announce that the next board meeting will be may 12th [Music] at 5 p.m and we will also have one june 21st 2022 at 5 pm and july 12 2022 at 5 pm at this location for the next three months we're locked in there do we have to are we just waiting for having that hearing that you're supposed to have tonight yeah what the budget hearing when will we know about that that'll be may may may 12th may 12th okay so may 12th we'll probably meet at 4 30 4 45 for a public hearing 445 for that for the public hearing for

082the public hearing and then we'll approve we'll uh vote on that board i mean that revision to the budget okay uh nothing further we'll can i have a motion to adjourn i have a motion and a second all in favor everybody wants to go home
