001the clock that was hanging up there celebrating information yes I thought I thought we always looked at it and you you know okay it's five o'clock welcome everyone to call ourselves to order at least I mean almost silence tragedies in Texas has passed away from there are plenty of others that's that's it thank you we have anybody to lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance today can you start me from back there no no no okay okay to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all thank you please be seated we will call our roll I'm present uh Dr O'Neal president Mr heater president um Mrs Barnes Griffin president uh Mr Urban president Mr Lowe president

002thank you um we have some presentations this evening we are starting with Muncie Central wrestling hello everybody hey my name is AJ Bradley I've been here a few times I've had the privilege to meet almost all of you uh today I have two of my wrestlers with me uh this big guy here this is Titus Waters over my shoulder and this here is Lexi Edwards uh before I give them a chance to talk to just a few things I like to say with what we accomplished this year what happened and why these two are here first this year there's a lot of Firsts for us on the individual front this was the first time in central history that we had four wrestlers with over 30 wins in a season which is Big considering you wrestle

003usually less than 40 matches two of those also had over 35 and Titus here actually set the school record with 41 wins which is pretty big so that was awesome we had our first two ever freshman sophomore State placers one on boys and one and girls Miss Lexi here was the first ever girl freshman sophomore Placer as well which is also awesome because it's the first year we had a program so she was wrestling girls who had been wrestling three four five years this is the first year we have one she goes and she's our first girl to qualify and place so that's pretty awesome it's her first year wrestling as well so that was great our boy was sophomore Gabe Hardy who plays we had four wrestlers in the Conference Finals this year which

004was more than we've had in the past 10 years as well we had a semi-state this semi-state champion this year which was the first time in 15 years in Muncie Central history we also had seven girls on our inaugural team and of those seven five of them had winning records uh they five of them also qualified for regionals and put on a great show and it was awesome with our first state qualifier in over 10 years that too was Mr Titus Waters we had multiple guys ranked in the top 10 this year for the first time in over 10 years which is very big for our program and the thing that I'm most proud about is our academic Allstate in wrestling they do juniors and seniors only we had 11 students that qualified and eight

005of them made it so on the wrestling team alone we had eight academic All-State wrestlers which is the most we've ever had and I believe almost any sport with less than 20 kids has ever had so that was pretty awesome as well and that's probably my most proudest accomplishment because when I took the program over four years ago we talked all about culture culture culture changing culture and the first was the classroom you gotta be a student first and this group of kids there's there's a direct correlation with our success on the mat and our success in the classroom because a lot of these numbers that I said the numbers overlap the numbers overlapping you know like Titus set School record one semi-state went to State also two-time academic Allstate and I can say that

006for other people as well but overall it's a great season we're building I saw many of you at some of our events I know Dr K she took uh shared out some photos from semi-state and it was a pretty awesome year I do have Lexi here if there's anything she would like to say waxy you wanna she's a beast on the map but on the mic she gets a little nervous you want to tell us about your experience so how was your first year it's okay nobody else use my first year was fun Well you certainly have a flair for it yeah so are you looking forward to next year yeah so are we so are we anybody where'd you what what middle school did you go to North Side north side okay and you're

007a sophomore okay and then uh how's school going school it's going good but what's your favorite subject you don't have a favorite subject okay are you are you being well coached well we are extraordinarily proud of you and all that you've accomplished so thank you so much she was a little humble there when she asked about how school's going she's a all a and like 1B student in the last two years like her GPA is over 4-0 so she's going to be on the academic All-State list next year so I didn't want her to get away with that and our other guest here is Mr Titus Waters hi Titus how are you I'm good how are you um I'm well this evening uh do you have a you had a nice season yeah it was

008all right I didn't end the way I wanted to but it was fun while I lasted well it gives you something to reach for right yeah and so what are your plans um well I was getting I was getting heavily scouted I do football too and I was all saying everything in that too so the recruitment process went pretty long because while other people were going on football visits I was on the mat so after the season was over I had a bunch of visits I had to make up and everything and My Two Front Runners we were shooting a Wabash for wrestling and they wanted me for football too but I was not doing two sports in college high school was enough and then I you wanted me to play football but I'm uh

009I haven't posted anything yet but I'm gonna go to Wabash to keep wrestling yeah and that's that's the I mean that clearly is the right choice yeah yeah I know you're a little biased but I think it's the right choice it it's like it's an Ivy League essentially it's D3 but it's one of the best schools in the country fantastic wrestling program and you know you will do really well that's a good group of people over there running that program and and anything either of you need anything either of you need Lexi you too anything you need from us let us know thank you and that goes for Downstream too when you're away at school um that first year can can be tough at times just understand that you're not alone okay that's right thank

010you great year [Applause] thank you for coming coach keep it up keep up the good work yeah boys basketball all right good evening um we have a little slideshow to keep me on track and not talk too long we all like pictures so uh one it was about a year ago I guess when we um when I was here last and uh what a year um it's been it's been it's been a lot of fun it's been a lot of work um but we're really really proud of what we accomplished this year um you know I guess we'll just go to go to slide two and I think I'm in control of that um we'll go with uh well I'm gonna stay there because we had to delete a slide because of a video problem

011but when I took this job um one of the things that brought with me is something that I've had since high school my coach had a a chant that we did after every win and it just talked about pride and and um you only do it after victories and we've been doing that for about 10 years it's something I've carried on everywhere I've went and this year coach Matheny that's in the middle of the circle there and over here we've been doing it for a decade and we I think realized after our scrimmage at Avon preseason scrimmage that we might over achieve this year and it was because of this silly little chant that we do um so we taught all the guys after the Avon win and then we did it together and he

012and I looked at each other and like you know we were lucky enough to win a sectional a few years ago I've had some big tournament wins where teams do that chant and we said immediately in the locker room like these guys you know are starving to win um and and they honestly it was after that that chant where we were like these guys are are gonna are bought in gonna do anything that we ask them to do and we really just might overachieve this year um so I was going to show a little bit of that but my video wasn't working but um that was that was when we knew we might have something um we have three teams uh we started the year with three full teams unfortunately we lost a few guys

013on the freshman team with um eligibility and then some injuries so um had to kind of piece that together for a little bit but that team and those freshmen stuck together ended the season with a winning record and uh won the city tournament so coach Cato and Coach Wharton who also assists with football uh we're great with that group of guys and they had a really solid season and we're I've got five or six of those guys that we're gonna need to move up and play at the bigger level next year uh junior varsity uh coach Benford uh and Jose Barnes did the majority of that coaching they ended up 12-9 we had 10 sophomores and three freshmen that played a lot on the JV team um and I would just add uh not just

014because coach benford's here but uh I'm probably as uh thankful for him joining us as uh as any new coach that I've ever had um he's he's in one of our buildings he's at Northside Middle School and uh he's the type of guy that we want leading our kids uh and I'm thankful for the relationship he's got with my son and certainly all the other players and um glad he's going to be back doing it again next year so as far as the varsity group of course I can't see it all but we uh we we have we have plenty of coaches that wanted to help we had no shortage of that so we would have eight or nine coaches sitting on the bench uh coach Brian Matheny I said we've done this for 10

015years together um you know coach Benford is a big part of also the varsity group Coach Rick painter who is in the building teaching science and then Cody Wolfe a past player of mine that that helps us out um we finished the season 15 and eight um we were had an 11 game win Improvement in the program and that's the second best Improvement in the state um in the NCC we were five and three which allowed us to finish third place with that we had three all NCC selections and that's a that's hard to do to nominate players and and figure out who deserves it but our three seniors uh that that got that were Daniel Harris uh Joey allum and uh Antonio Gore um Daniel Harris was also an All-State honorable mention player and

016um just wanted to point him out real quick before we keep going but the the some of the other metrics I guess that are out there that that matter um uh to us uh as far as record-wise is the max perhaps ranking we improved almost 200 spots in the state of Indiana this year and then um our defensive average that's what I will always hang my hat on it was the third lowest uh points against uh since that stat has been kept since the early 90s here at Muncie Central um you've got a few pictures there our seniors there with Coach Matheny a couple of our award winners at the city of Champions um Princeton young and uh Surf and then our whole team up there in the in the top one um you know

017we talked about building the program everybody does but I want to make sure that I I say what I really mean about these five seniors and you know we're 15 and eight and we didn't bring home any trophies and we're not going to hang any banners um but I think the the legacy of these five guys may be as big as any team we won't know this for several years but if we can keep building and winning this is going to be the team that brought people back to the field house after covid um after a couple of tough years um you know we just steadily saw people coming back to watch these guys the way they play The Way They Carried themselves and the way they just LED this group and so we we

018won't know yet um we won't know for a while but I think they may be as important as as any team we've ever had and those all five of those seniors have opportunities to continue academics with Athletics in college one has already committed for basketball Antonio Gore one is committed for football Joey and um one I hear is going to be committing this week and then the other two both have options as well so that's exciting um and something we want to see them do you just got some other pick issues there some of our our fun outing seven past players come talk at Team meals and then our Saturday morning Youth League that we were able to hold it South Side um was was a lot of fun as well about 75 kids in

019our first year for that on Saturday mornings a few other just pictures of things that that I think these guys will remember more um you know I know that if coach long enough to know they're not going to remember much of what I said or or mini games they're going to remember our sectional dinner at Johnny Carino's um where they got to order any dessert they wanted and that was the highlight of the Year probably but uh you know just other team meals and team fun um coach Benford and his son bringing some energy on a Saturday morning and just how much fun the guys had with the little guys um you know playing dodgeball or something out of the ordinary so um again just some pictures to show some some of our fundraisers this

020year guys getting out and helping at a golf outing serving concessions on Sunday or on the Sunday afternoon League we took a trip to a Ball State game a freshman through varsity and then picture of some of the guys that got to go talk on the radio show so again a lot of fun um the the last thing we want to honor and talk about is just the past and the tradition and the history here this is Muncie Central um and um obviously very excited to be a part of it but one of the big projects we wanted to do this year was to to honor some of that our locker room didn't um have any mention of a past player in it and so we uh we made sure we we got some painting

021done uh the players as you can see the paint his hair weren't very good at it but we did we did as much painting as we were comfortable as high as we wanted to get on a ladder to be able to get some of this signage up and we have our thousand Point scorers from South Side north side and Muncie Central we've got the All-State players from all three schools as well as the Indiana All-Star coaches and then of course our three Mr basketballs and then all of the state banners in there and just want these guys the younger generation to know what what we all knew growing up that this is Muncie Central and uh that's who we're playing for so thankful for it uh the the last thing I would say as one

022we want to give the field house that full again but I want to thank the administration and thank you guys there are some things we need to compete the program needs to compete in our sectional and in our conference one of those is getting taken care of and that's the extra goals in the field house so that we can be more efficient more effective in practice and I know that the four side goals are getting done this summer so it's a big investment and we appreciate it thank you thanks coach you all do you have with you I just have Joey but that's because he's here for your extra credit not to support me so can he Joey come on up yeah I like this so Joey and I have known each other even probably

023longer than he realizes because Mrs Williams my wife taught him in preschool yeah at First Press and she was very excited this year we had a lot of excitement about you so what are your plans I'm going to play football at DePaul University that's unfortunate yeah Titus you get all the help you need I would all seriousness I will look forward to seeing you this year's Monon Bell game at Crawfordsville yeah um what do you study um undecided pardon I'm undecided they don't uh actually let you decide until sophomore year okay well I'm anything else you want to chat about did you have a good year I do yeah uh my first year here for field I don't know and I mean it was a big move didn't really know very many people but I

024mean people made it easy for me so how was how are the academics I mean depends on the class you take but I mean it's just like any other school I mean you've got to put in the work okay okay well you brought a lot of excitement and Coach thank you for your work and please pass along to uh your other players that how much we really enjoyed watching them this year and your coaching staff for all their work there was a great deal of Pride at those games and it was wonderful to see and Walnut Street was alive uh during the winter in a way that it hadn't been in a while so thank you uh very much and we wish you the very best and if you there's anything you need and Joe

025anything you need heading off to DePaul uh let us know thank you thank you so we have the Northside Middle School London trip who's reporting on the London trip anybody here for Northside Middle School London trip [Music] yeah I can talk about it please please do we want to hear all about it this looks like I know luckily I know that Emily probably did a great job on it but um so that was one thing I was going to mention I'm the family Navigator over at Northside we went to London for Spring Break um this year and we spent six seven days there we took um there was 39 of us from Muncie who went between the chaperones and the students we had at least 20 students I want to say um and it was

026super super fun so I'm gonna see what pictures we got some pictures of Big Ben um we went to a bunch of different things so we did Back to the Future of the musical we went to Big Ben we went to Stonehenge the students had a really great time they got to do a lot of educational stuff but also a lot of like cultural immersion so we went on Bridges is and walked over the glass the glass Bridge we saw the crown jewels um did a lot of stuff oh we got to see The Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace which is really unique because we know that King Charles which just had coronation so um leading up to that we got to learn a lot about how like Queen Elizabeth um and her

027passing how um how the changing of the money and the currency and everything so a lot of the students were excited too wow this was really touchy a lot of the students were excited to see that the currency was Queen Elizabeth and so some of the people over there were telling us you know hold on to that because next month is going to change all to King Charles so um we had a bunch of really awesome tour guides so um yeah we're really fortunate with that um yeah just a lot of pictures we had to go international travel so they got to go through um the customs and things like that which was unique for them a lot of them hadn't had passports prior to um coming on the trip with us which was really

028cool um they got to uh you know have to be on the plane and experience all that traveling and on in London there's the left side of the road driving and all the different things that they got to learn about in that way um Stonehenge I was picture we had one of our family's um come the Smiths so Judah and Jonah and Christina David they all came so some families got to come and chakra and things like that um there was that Eminem like we did so much stuff I don't even know how she could hack all of all of this um presentation but lots of awesome kiddos um for me it was really important as a family navigator to get to know some of these kiddos um being new this year it was my

029first year so I got to really get to know some of them and you learn a lot when you spend seven full days with a student so um lots of their habits and a lot of their their jokes and their games and fun stuff like that uh we went on the London Eye so one of the nice things about EF Tours which is Education First is that they basically plan the whole entire trip for you so they include all the tickets they include admission to museums admission onto the London Eye all of our generous work provided um those sorts of things um there's like um those sorts of things um there's like lots of different cultures so that was like the Chinatown part of London um tons of pictures um I was right in front

030of Buckingham Palace I am in the future somewhere but that was like our whole group photo which was fun um but basically uh one thing that I was going to talk about within um the family Navigator role is that we are planning um another trip for next summer and that's going to be to London Paris and Rome and it's going to be nine days one of the nice things that Emily and I are working together on which again I didn't know she had this presentation but um we're gonna do a lot of fundraising so one of the the downfalls to that is that there's a cost so like that trip specifically was about 3 000 a little over 3 000 for students and so we have already started putting together some ideas for um Color

031Run um empty your console for like the the staff parking lot um bookathon tape your principal to the wall kinds of things Mr Williams is probably not excited for that one but um different fundraising opportunities so that way students who maybe not are not as fortunate financially will be able to kind of join us so we're really excited about that I've I've ranted and raved about it because international travel is something that isn't always the easiest to come by for some of our students so giving them the opportunity I think is really important so I'm excited for future travels so if you could let me know with fundraising fundraising cranks up um I can probably put you in touch with some folks that would be more than willing to to help out oh that would

032be that would be absolutely Dr cake give my contact and um and I would like to expand it if at all possible in terms of making sure we are able to broadly do as many as many students as possible on the trip did you see any plays yeah we so we uh they kind of thought it would be if this is something that was a little more like student oriented so we saw back to the future of the musical and for me I like I like live plays in theater and stuff like that so I was like oh this is going to be kind of like lame but it was like one of the best plays I've ever seen in my life um they were fantastic the music was on point they had like a

033giant Back to the Future car come out into the audience like in and the students were like ranting and raving and like they they all had the best attention I've ever seen students be so enthralled so we did go to that show and we we saw so much did you visit the Tower of London yeah yep so you went through the tower yep the tower we did the the London castle the London Eye um Westminster Abbey Westminster yes we did and then um what'd they think of poet's Corner in Westminster Abbey did you go did you do you remember poet's corner I I do but I don't know that all the students were as interested the students were like um very interested in the food and so there was like a day we went to

034Borough market and the students got to go off and kind of like try different foods and eat different things so I think the culture immersion is really important um so there was the accent and there was the currency and the food and all those differences I think were good um did they have mushy peas do they have what the mushy peas with their fish and chips uh they did it no we have a lot of um pie and mash and like bangers and mash and so a lot of mashed potatoes and like roast and kind of like home styled stuff so um yeah anybody have any questions about the trip I think it's fantastic and if there's you know anything the board can do to help out with fundraising yeah Mr Heater is great to

035dunk tank yeah yeah so uh I think we're on to you as family Navigators yeah right [Laughter] alrighty I'm gonna shorten this because we're all a little short over here um so my name is Alexis Haynes I work at Southside Middle School as the family Navigator and I'm going to kind of start us off um but we've got Haley Williams she's the South View Family Navigator behind me is Lindsay you've met her remed is the Grissom family Navigator and Emily works at East Washington I'm gonna try to not mess this up um so we wanted to talk just in case you guys didn't know what the history of family Navigators look like we wanted to talk a little bit about how it started for us as well as how it started in general um so

036family Navigators are underneath what we call City connects which started as a larger program connection connected with Boston College about 20 years ago and so they worked with Boston Public Schools to essentially help meet those needs that we all know affect our students the things that we see in the classroom as well as outside of the classroom at home and make sure that our their students were supported in all of the ways that we can't to be as effective and as successful in school as possible so that started with Boston College and connected with um City connects and Boston College and then in Indiana that connected that connection happens at Marion University and so Marion University oversees the family Navigators through the city connects program and so we have a program manager that works with

037US Weekly daily sometimes who helps to guide us and make sure that we're implementing the practice effectively and they work very closely with Boston College who partnered with the Boston Public Schools to implement the practice to start with so they've done a lot of things to help make that integrate into Indiana effectively all right I'm Haley Williams I'm the family navigator at South View um so part of our practice model and approach is um helping meet the needs of the whole child through what we call whole class reviews and individual student reviews so during whole class reviews we meet with every single teacher to go over every single student in our school so it's very tedious it takes a lot of their planning time after school time so we're very grateful for our teachers for

038that through the whole class reviews we look at four different domains so we look at academic we look at social emotional Behavior Health and Medical and family with this information we then kind of tier them which is what is on that graph so this we call this a tiering triangle typically in like an mtss process what you would see is about 80 to 90 percent of your students fall in within tier one um so this is students who are responding well to that Universal instruction during class with little to maybe no needs um so tier two we'll see about five to ten percent of the student population that may be students who need group intervention for math for reading things like that and then tier three those are our most at-risk youth High needs students

039so typically you see about one to five percent of students fall into that category um and what we do from there is we refer them for individual student review so that becomes a multi-disciplinary team where we figure out you know what's going on with the student what resources can we connect them to inside and outside of school and try to create smart goals for each of these students um so typically City connects wants us to be at that eight percent of our students there depending on how many we have um so during this presentation you'll get to see each school's data and kind of how it compares to what a typical tiering system should look like and also things that we have been working on the school year and coming into next year hi again

040I'm Emily from East Washington so at East Washington Academy we're serving about 442 students we know that things ebb and flow a little bit even since we put this presentation together about 437 students are receiving or have received this year three or more services and in total to date 3562 Services have been delivered please note that I did not personally deliver 3562 Services however as a whole our our building worked very hard to try to serve these students and these families and these are the this is a number that we did collectively as a building these services are broken down into three different categories we break them down into prevention and Enrichment Services into early intervention services and then intensive or crisis similar to what Haley had mentioned so of those 3562 at East Washington

0412781 were prevention and enrichment and those were similar to Girl Scouts robotics math bowl science Bowl the things that we know that at times really energize our students to get to school and so we have been working to reintegrate more of those exciting enrichment activities to help our students just feel really excited to be there we have this year served 692 early intervention services and those are going to be again similar to reading groups math groups we've had a lot of wonderful after school tutoring opportunities that have occurred and during the daytime as well and then we've served 89 intense over crisis services and those are similar to Meridian Health Services counseling maybe some homeless needs trying to meet those we have a skill Builder from Meridian that's been wonderful for us this year and

042so she's been working in the school and at home as well so those are similar to what those services are so of our student body the breakdown in the tiering system for us has been tier one uh 48 of our students have been assigned the tier one status so again when assessing strengths and needs through those whole class reviews students were assigned a tier looking at strengths and needs and so our tier one students have the most strengths fewest needs in those four domains so in academic social emotional Behavioral Health and Family and so these are the students that are going to have more primarily Enrichment Services our tier 2A have a few more needs in addition to some strengths and we have 25 percent of our population or 112 students who fit into that

043category and they're going to have again more Enrichment Services but also maybe some more preventative Services as well and early intervention moderate we have 16 or 72 of our students in that category and as we continue down to tier three those students become um they have more more risks fewer strengths more needs so we had that many of our population in that category and then for tier three you're intensive six percent of our population are 28 students fit into that category so they're going to have more of the intensive or crisis services in addition to the others as well we talked a little bit about wanting to put some strings and needs just in general from our school and these are not necessarily research based though I could probably come up with some research to

044help support them for sure um but in general I feel like for East Washington a big strength for us is the knowledge and the commitment of the staff I feel super grateful to be with this staff and with these groups of of people um who've just really given a lot to our school and we have a lot of supportive families that I'm really thankful to work with when it comes to needs we're continuing to work on helping our students read at grade level that's continuing to be something that we focus on and then continuing to work to find additional resources in the community to meet the counseling needs of some of our students who are in the more tier 2B tier three categories so that's something that we're continuing to look for so we'll send

045out an interest survey to all of our families at the beginning of the year and on those interest surveys we ask our families to tell us what things are your students already involved in and what things would you like your student to people involved in and then we ask the older students you know what things would you like to be involved in and so from this year I received a lot of information from families about you know tutoring mentoring leadership some self-esteem so on and so forth and so I was able to implement a girl scouts backpack group in our school this year and this is something that I was approached with they had a three-year Grant so it's free that's something this we've had 90 plus students signed up for it's been weekly it's

046been during the school day so there hasn't been an after-school barrier when it comes to Transportation so that's been really wonderful we're going to continue that for next year and hopefully add even more um and so that's been really good I've also worked with Dr Emily Rutter at Ball State to put together a group of students who honor students who are interested in coming into our school and doing some additional tutoring in our school and so that's been really nice we've had some weekly students come in from Ball State who have served our students very well certainly the food pantry is something that we do monthly at our school we've worked to increase our social emotional learning groups as well as continue to increase their Community Partners that we have at our school for next

047year we're continuing Girl Scouts continuing tutor tutoring mentoring I did connect with the ball State the college mentors and that will start which will be really nice we want to expand those after school programs get those students excited to come to school parent needs assessment is something in addition to the interest survey that I plan to do next year to see from parents what specific things do you need more in your home that would help your student you know continue to be successful at school increasing parental involvement get more parents back into the school supporting volunteering looking for that to occur and then expanding the big idea food pantry more Community Resources in our school on a regular basis so there's lots of work that we're we've been proud of to do this year but

048there's certainly more work to be done at uwa I'm going to pass this off to remed now here we go thank you somber Matt Page the family navigator at Grissom Elementary School so as Emily talked about Grissom we're celebrating 471 students and 97 of our students receive the whole class review this year uh the other three percent were either new students that came in late and were weren't able to get that whole class review so we have 2918 Services delivered this year um and 400 of our students were receiving three services or more as Emily talked about 1746 of our students received a prevention and enrichment program so these are just like our Sports choir band and those Enrichment Services that are provided to students 1021 received early intervention services which is our family supports

049and also SEL groups we had a ton of SEO groups that happened this year and that would be big thanks to our counselor for running those we had 151 students receive an intensive or Crisis Intervention and that's more of the counseling wraparound services or family supports that we may put in place so as far as Grissom this is the data from the 97 percent of the students that received the whole class review we saw that 56 percent of our population was tier one which was low needs and few needs 26 percent of our population was tier 2A ten percent of our population was tier 2B and three percent was or seven percent was tier three more intensive so we like to see the more intensive students receiving an individual student review and for this year

050seven percent of our students across the categories there received a individual student review so as far as our highest streams at Grissom I would say it's just accountability of our staff and our students when I looked at the data for academic domain uh we had a high amount of students that had strengths in participation so we see that from teachers holding them accountable of them doing the right thing our highest needs this year are math and reading achievement what we saw is that we had a 30 percent need in reading this year and we saw that 29 uh need for math in our daily so some highlights from Grissom this year has been awesome it's been a good year for us um one thing that I implemented this year was the community engagement committee and

051we have a few teachers on that committee Mr Logan uh Mrs Bilby Mrs higginson um and Mrs Hoffman they're all on the committee with myself and then Bridge Community Church uh Jeff Helm and his organization Lads hiding so the reason for the community engagement committee was to bring in community and partners and try to align our goals what they're trying to do to provide services to our students also this year as um we talked about I sent out family assessment tools and from that on that tool I asked about housing food in the home and clothing or any general supports so what I saw was that it was a high need for food this year kids not having food on the weekends so we implemented Astro packs and Astro packs is a food scarcity program

052where we send home shelf stable food just over the weekend they get through like a Friday and then also before break so we'll send that food home and the donations from the food came from the churches around Bridge donated to us we also received some donations of self-stable food from Ball State which was awesome and uh yeah so that's been a good program and that's provided to a handful of our students that need it another thing that we implemented this year was cooking club and cooking club is run by Miss Dixie Denton and Mrs Lisa Bilby who are awesome so cooking club when I sent out the uh surveys in the beginning of the year to our students seeing what they were interested in we saw a high interest in cooking so we brought the

053cooking club and also we saw a high interest in reading so we tied those into together so in the cooking club they learned how to read and write while also learning how to cook so the kids love it and it's been a good program and from our community engagement committee we were able to get uh money funded to us for that program so that was awesome and uh thank you to Jeff Helm and his Organization for that um something else I help out with is planning for our family nights this year as you can see we had a huge family night which was a community of readers um it was the last one we had in uh the mayor came and read which was awesome so our students loved that he read a child book

054and we also had uh numerous individuals for Newton's here she came and read a children's book to our students that came out so that was uh pretty good and as a family uh family not family Navigator that's one of my jobs to assist with those nights and bring it all together also a lot of community organizations came out for our students at night so that was nice SEL groups I served as a hub for SEO groups this year um and we had a lot of SEO group topping and one thing I see is the need so it tailors to know what groups certain students should be in and just to make sure those are happening we have 15 SEO groups that happen in our first semester and then we had 12 FCO SEO groups that

055happened in second semester so something that I sent out to families was our family assessment tool which was good to help get all the information to lead uh some of the things that I brought to the school this year our goal is going into next year will be to increase Community engagement meaning that would be myself going out to the different organizations uh or different councils to sit on to see how we can make a connection to bring to the school uh something that we're looking forward to is the big idea shift we'll bring in more of Our Community Partners in and it's a Allison Quirk who's had a lot of great ideas about how we can make big idea better so we're going to be focused on that for next year we're looking into

056attendance and tenant field trips going into the next year so we're planning those now uh so we want to boost our attendance we saw from the data this year that attendance was a huge problem so we want to combat that and that's on our goals for next year another thing we have in mind is we're going to be pairing with college mentors as well coming into next year and then from our community engagement Council Mr Logan is going to be leading up a Breakfast Buddies club for mentoring for our students so we're putting that together just to have students start off on the right track in the morning before getting started on the school day with a mentoring program and we also would like faster intervention planning so this summer uh I have all my

057data from this year I'll be looking at flagging students going into next year to see exactly where what students need to be in certain interventions starting out faster so we know on day one going in instead of waiting a couple months around all right I'm gonna pass this off to Southview thank you thank you hi I'm back all right so we have 486 students at Southview um I have the privilege to say that all of our students are receiving at least three or more services um that can be an SEO group that can be Vision hearing screening um most of our students have at least five or more services uh 2 211 Services were delivered this year um 1919 were prevention enrichment and early intervention services so the reason why I put those together is

058because sometimes they overlap and what they do um 328 intensive or crisis intervention services [Music] so in the yellow you can see that that is our tier one that's 162 students um tier two is in that light blue that's a low 2A so those are mild needs which is 121 students tier 2B is that's our moderate we're starting to get you know quite a few needs that's where 90 or 90 students um are assigned there and then our most intensive needs 104. so we have a pretty large number of tier three students who really need that intervention and support um so yeah so I would say our highest ranks is dedicated and knowledgeable staff our staff know so much information um with our kids which tells me that they have a great relationship with our

059students and are also our families many of our families have come to me and I really appreciate I get to work with them at their most vulnerable States I know that's not always easy coming in asking for help um in our highest needs I mean basic necessities you're talking food shelter anything like that and I do want to highlight that I have spoke to 24 families who have experienced homelessness this year um so I have started to have you know conversations within the community with stakeholders about you know are we all running into the same barrier about housing in which we are so we I'm working with the team to come up with a plan on you know how do we present this to the mayor um to go forward and address that housing need

060um this year so there is a huge need for clothing at Southview so we I started a clothing closet we also partnered with shift grief group it's a nine-week program outside of school it really Dives in we have a lot we we notice that a lot of our kids have lost parents or other close family members so we thought that was really important for many of our kids college mentors started this year it was a really great program a lot of our students enjoyed going to Ball State University and like ramad said that'll be at Grissom next year um this year we had additional Christmas assistance so I think we had eight or nine Community Partners who were helping with Christmas career day is this Friday so if you see me running around it's because

061I'm trying to schedule all third fourth and fifth grade kids for career day so a lot of different professions are coming in to talk to our students we're going to have four 20-minute sessions so I'm really excited for that that um 812 I got a grant from 8 12 this year to provide hygiene products and hair products for our students of color many of them come in in the morning and you know they're like they have their Hood up and they want their hair done before they go to class so sometimes I will do students here before they go to class in the morning stronger Community partner relationships I think I'm pretty good at going out in the community trying to insert myself into those conversations and highlight the students strengths and needs to the

062Community Family engagement Council started this year as well um going into next year I would like to see like more programs and clubs at Southview and if we can figure out transportation that would be amazing and I know that a lot of our students would enjoy that after school program um like remed said expand food pantry night since day one I've kind of tag teamed with the community of bringing as many Community Partners into every single food pantry night that we have also we have began to flag students for the fall who really need to start those intervention services from day one um and a big barrier to that is trying to align the individual student review process to the mtss process because they do a line so next year um we plan on working

063that out this summer thank you guys it's me again I saw him at Northside Medical I'm like a huge picture taker I love seeing pictures of our kiddos and all the things we do so lots of pictures on there I'm not gonna go too hard on the data because it's kind of all the similar kind of data but this year I'm serving 390 students Northside has a very large population this year so I have not I'm not able to serve the 8th graders this year the practice model typically only serves about 400 students per coordinator so there are goals for that to increase in the future but right now we're only serving sixth and seventh grade right now 2000 over 2000 Services delivered um the majority of our students are also receiving three or more

064services um that's the breakdown of the prevention versus early intervention and incentives or crisis I will say a lot of our students um do receive the prevention enrichment type of services just because we do have a lot of sports and clubs and activities and things like that some of the things that are pictured we took our students to the State House took some of our students to London we've done lots of field trips and things like that so you can see pictures from Camp Adventure from the roller skating rink from food pantry things like that in terms of tiering so I do the same process as all of the other family Navigators and we break those students down into tears one thing that's notable about my dad my data is that over half of our

065students are tier two or higher so that's concerning because the practice model would like to see more students in that tier one area needing prevention enrichment but with some of our middle schoolers you know we have kids out of dish like from out of district and we have students from um you know just really really tough spots in Muncie that their their need is a little bit higher so we do see over 50 percent of our students being tier two or higher some of our strengths would be that our teachers are very knowledgeable and dedicated and we do have a lot of those clubs and sports and things like that to offer our students our highest needs would be tier two service options so um because we have so many tier two kiddos we don't

066have we don't have hundreds of service providers to be able to address the needs of those tier two tier 2B and tier three students and then also parent School communication I've done a lot of Outreach this year to this to the student's parents to family members and I'm struggling because they're not really reaching back out to me I'll leave calls I'll I'll go on to email and leave them emails and then follow-up emails and then business cards and all kinds of stuff and it it's I'm struggling getting the buy-in from the family so that would be a need for me as well as attendance our attendance numbers are really struggling so it's hard to offer these students services in the school when they're not coming to school um in terms of highlights again some more

067pictures um so I started social groups based off of my dad my daughter this year um because we have so many two to be 2A type tiered students I kind of broke that down and looked at what are their need areas whether those types of um tiers and so some of our biggest issues we had fighting we had peer conflict we had General socialization things like that so the four groups that I did I did two general socialization groups and then I did a peer conflict socialization group and I did Ace regulation emotion regulation some of our kids who can't calm down or some of our kids who get anxious or angry we worked on different skill sets same with like peer conflict we worked on empathy and trying to get these kids to understand

068that sometimes fighting isn't the best answer so that was one of my initiatives this year was those social groups we've worked a lot on incentives for students so we have so many incentive field trips and we have honor roll and we give ice cream and ribbons and all kinds of stuff like that which I've tried to be a part of some of our other field trips we went to The Nutcracker we have a field day planned we took all of our eighth graders to the Mac we're taking all of the 8th graders to Ball State and then today I just finalized permission slips to take our 8th graders on an incentive field trip to Kings Island so there are tons of field trips there's tons of incentives for our students to do well academically behaviorally

069and attendance wise for our food pantry I increased family quantities this year so we were receiving quantities for about 60 families and now we've bumped up to 72 families so that means we're serving more people through our food pantry which is good um increased service providers we've added more behavioral interventionists skills Builders and therapists into our school which is good we've participated in our first district safety check I don't know if those are like pushed out to some of the other schools yet but I think that was really good and showed our students that we care about their safety we've been able to do two of those now at North Side um I had a social work intern um from The Ball State social work department so they they came to me and asked if

070I would be interested in taking a social work intern she was super helpful learned a lot and then kind of felt like she was part of our North Side staff by the end of her um practicum so that was really great bulletin boards attendance meetings Titan closet there's a hundred things that the family Navigators do um Beyond throughout all the schools so goals for 23 24. um I have gotten a lot of donations to be able to do student hygiene bags not only for sixth and seventh grade but also for sixth seventh and eighth grade so we're going to be giving them hygiene bags that have like shampoo toothbrushes things like that but I've I've gotten enough donation to be able to do all of those for next year which is really exciting um we're

071gonna add a few clubs based off of the student interest surveys the Lego Club crafting club and then we're going to continue fundraising to get those travel club members up we want to get kids out of the country and get them to explore and see those kinds of things um and then um I want to continue with getting some grants and things like that for our Titan closet and our Titan store we have a really great incentivizing program called the Titan store where students earn bucks for their um their good grades their good behaviors and they can spend those on like candy and books and all kinds of stuff so I'm looking into some grant funding for those continued big idea family event and then continued Partnerships with the PTO and then I think one

072more all right so at South Side I am also serving sixth and seventh grade this year through City connects that being said I still help our eighth graders as much as I possibly can um it just doesn't reflect in the data so that's 303 students give or take depending on mobility in and out of our school um this year we have seen 1797 Services delivered um 1191 of those were prevention and Enrichment Services and like we've talked about that's our choirs our clubs our Sports um yeah the regular activities that we do in school and we've had 244 intensive and crisis Services provided and that is grief counseling and intensive services are based around like our suicide or homicide assessments and things like that that our students need um for our tiering we have about

07338 of our kids that are in tier one so that low needs um we have 31 that fall into 2A which is that mild need 21 fall into 2B which is that moderate need and then about nine percent of our students fall into intensive needs or tier three and that's right about where City connect says we should be they say about eight to ten percent should be in tier three um and everything else should kind of fall in between um at Southside we see a lot of those in-betweeners so those kids that kind of settle into that that tier two a or 2B spot and they kind of drift back and forth depending on what's going on in their lives um I want to highlight our strengths I said our strengths right now our staff

074dedication our staff is very diligent in making sure that our students needs are being met we work together really well to connect students to the right person the right Services the right things that they need in order to be successful and that extends to our teachers who constantly reach out and constantly try to boost our students up to make sure that they're getting what they need um and we also have really supportive families I've found that our families want their kids to be safe they want them to be healthy they want them to be successful in school and anytime we call them they are ready and willing to help us and we've really appreciated that at Southside um our highest needs fall into that social and relational skills building that's where we see a lot

075of our student needs um things like SEL groups and things like that are the stuff that our staff has talked a lot about this year we'd like to implement more of that next year to make sure that we are meeting the needs of our students and kind of focusing in on that tier two a and to be to better meet those needs we also would like to see some better academic engagement making sure that our students are excited to come to class that they're willing to engage in what's going on and that they're really taking in what's going on um and then as South you mentioned we have a lot of basic needs that still need to be are blessed to have Deb Houston who runs our Panther Pantry in our Panther Den but we

076still see a lot of students who have housing needs food needs clothing needs laundry needs and so we're working really hard to continue to meet those needs as well and then for the stuff that's going on um I'm gonna go back so you can see these pictures this is from our family night on this first slide we had a great family night back in February we had over 20 Community Partners and clubs and different groups come in to meet our families and get to know them it kind of explain what we've got going on at South Side a lot of our clubs had tip booths and things like that we had food that night we had a lot of buy-in from our community which we were really thankful for this picture shows the top one

077shows Dwayne Clemens from Ivy Tech and he is him and Wayne Johnson have done fantastic things at Southside they've implemented a mentoring program where they reach out to some of our kids who are starving for relationships and they have also helped to implement a College and Career course for our eighth grade students where they earn a college or in a college credit for attending a course for four weeks during their success class and that has been great and our students have loved it and they really enjoy seeing Wayne and Duane around the school they're they're there all the time and just some other pictures from our family night um as some of the other family Navigators have talked about we also did student interest surveys and family needs surveys from our student interest surveys we've

078been able to implement a lot of clubs the pictures that you see are Miss drum which is one of our Math teachers that she's implemented a hatch Club where our students get to learn about literally growing animals and what that looks like in the the incubators and you know learning about all of that I think we have turkeys that are supposed to hatch this week but these are the chickens and our students have loved it and they've got to learn about it and got to pet the chickens and it's been a great time we've also implemented a chess club with Miss King and Mr Beckett we also have a cooking club with Miss Williams along with her Garden Club with our with our greenhouse and so we have a lot of great things going on

079and our students wanted that they wanted the cooking they wanted the hatch Club they loved that idea and so that's been really great I think we've also really been working on improving our communication with our parents and upping some of that this year as well as bringing them back into the building after covid and welcome welcoming them into what we've got going on at Southside and I hope to do that even more next year and then continuing to build those Community Partners has been huge for me this year and getting to know what was already going on at the school as well as what we needed and I mentioned Wayne and Dwayne with Ivy Tech they've been fantastic we've also worked really closely with the boys Girls Club with Youth for Christ with their tutoring

080programs and things like that that have been really awesome this year goals for next year I have a goal of serving our eighth grade students next year that decision to kind of only serve 6th and seventh grade as Lindsay mentioned had to do with trying to keep us closer to that 400 Mark but at Southside our numbers are lower as far as enrollment and so we're going to add in eighth grade for me next year which will be a pretty smooth process because we've already got the seventh grade data from this year and hopefully that can kind of just transition over to eighth grade as well as building our Community Partners and continuing to figure out what we need and work together I love remed's Community partner board that he's got going on in Group

081and I would like to see something like that implemented at Southside as well to better align what we've got going on and how we could get that looking better at South Side um and then I'd also like to continue to build our Partnerships with our families get to know them better help them to learn who they can go to if they need what you know whatever they needed so I'd like to do some of that at Southside as well um and then we've got overall data so we just wanted to make some of this a little bit big picture for you guys so us family Navigators we're serving about 2 105 students give or take depending on the day um we've implemented about 11 730 services this year um and then 1 875 of our

082students are receiving three or more services um so that could be prevention Enrichment Services that could be intensive Services it just depends on the student um we've also had 8702 prevention and Enrichment Services as of when this PowerPoint was made and so we've got new Services every day of course for our students um 2219 early intervention services and 809 intensive and crisis intervention services um and then we see about 42 percent of our students fall into tier one overall for the for the district um 27 fall into 2A uh 17 fall into 2B and then about 10 fall into tier three which again is right on park or what the what the program says we should be doing our highest strengths this year according to the data that we've had is Youth Development our social

083skills our academic skills and our interests we've seen our students really start to thrive and really start to engage in what they want to do at school and so that's been great this year but we continue to need help in tutoring areas and we've got lots of groups working on that as well as Crisis Intervention and counseling services we have a lot of Community Partners that offer counseling but unfortunately we have a lot of students that need counseling and so trying to figure out who we can go to and Who's got what waiting lists and stuff like that is what we've been working and then we wanted to highlight Our Community Partners yeah so just kind of to close out so one of our biggest shops is to engage with the community with our families

084and be able to offer services so most of us have social work background and the big thing within social workers resources and connecting our families and our vulnerable populations with the services that they need so some of our Community Partners are listed here we have hundreds and within our data system we actually document every time we add a new partner we put it into our data system so that way we can use it so if I use a certain partner today I put it into the system and tomorrow I could be like hey that's a new service that I didn't know we had and we kind of connect and work together so we want to thank all of our Community Partners and if there's ever more Community Partners or more resources we're always willing to

085engage and kind of show those to our families and so that's kind of our overall data um and yeah we just want to thank you guys for your time and learning about what we do and continuing to support us and to support the children thank you so much assuming any questions for the family Navigators I do I just just maybe a clarification or something I'm forgiving my ignorance um you I think Haley mentioned about the homelessness um is that a pervasive thing throughout the system the South View was the only one mentioned specifically um what is that what does that look like again forgive my ignorance maybe but what does that look like so I'll let I'll let I'll let you answer for her what it looks like like with our McKinney vinto students and

086you know if we need to order clothing if we need to get them extra resources connect them to our food pantries um I think that that's something that kind of affects all the schools but I do know that it's been really intense for Southview this year let's say our YWCA we have representation from all schools wow so typically at Southview like parents will come in and they'll talk to me about the situation or talk to a trusted staff member um and then I start calling places um I whether that income-based housing whether that's the YW emergency housing is really hard to find um usually there's wait list or they just don't have any room um I rely on darika I I call it my darica card because I'm calling her all the time like hey

087do you know somebody at the YW I have a family who's experiencing XYZ um so really it's just taking the time to sit down with the family and sometimes you know I have to tell them like I don't have a right now definite answer for you but I will find a way um so whether that is trying to figure out where they can go for one night or if they can stay with a family member and such like that um but it's really hard you know I carry that home sometimes of like I don't know where this kid is going to sleep at night tonight or tomorrow um so sometimes I have to tell families I don't have an answer for you right now um but I will figure it out for you so wow

088it's a lot of um like I said 24 of our families that I know of this year that have came and talked to me I know that there's more um that you know I haven't had those conversations with parents or who are doubled up with family members who still qualify for that mckinney-vento but yeah it is a very heavy thing to experience and I'm not even in the situation so so you've had 24 families at toffee this year who have experienced an episode of homelessness yes and I want to say that's families that's not just one individual you know some of our families have a eight plus kids and that's also another barrier is um some of the shelters will have restrictions and requirements for families so you could only have you know this many

089kids or you can't have your pets so it's like what do they do with their pets um or as the YWCA is only for women and children so if you have a husband or something they have to figure out where to go that night so like I said earlier I've been having conversations with outside stakeholders as well um to figure out a game plan of like how we all move forward because some of the Partnerships that we have created with outside agencies are working with the same families that we are um so how do we're all coming to the same barrier in trying to support these families so um yeah things I'll just say because I didn't see it up there and it's like so there's our region for Delaware County where region six as

090a relation homelessness so every second Tuesday of the month we have a CLC meeting like a Continuum of Care so everyone that touches everybody leadership is together and so I want I'll make sure that I connect you all so that somebody can be a part of those meetings yes please you can get all your kind your needs met right there in that spot too with us thank you I also hope to pull like maybe some DCS data to see how many families they're working with at Southview specifically um I just think that would be super interesting to compare my data to their data and figure out you know what's going on thank you thank you uh any different questions you certainly have your work cut out for you and we are very pleased to have

091you um do you feel spread a little thin that would be my impression given the numbers and the data that we're seeing that um well I I'm grateful that City connects Marion University came to us with that they had a state Grant through the 1008 State learning loss Grant and so they were able to First offer to be able to fund a few of our Navigators and then the mayor also saw that this would be a great connection between the community and our schools and the students and so he contributed several years of paying for a couple of the Navigator salaries but I've promised all of them they're critical in our schools so even if we don't have grant funding Brad will always find funding to be able to keep you so I tell them

092don't get nervous but they all have done such a remarkable job and I hear from the teachers the parents the students the community they've made great connections and you know they've all been here a short period of time so we're grateful for all that you do thank you all for your passion your heart thank you and let us know if we can meet further support at any level so thank you [Applause] okay well good evening I wanted to just bring it to everybody's attention again that this is Teacher Appreciation Week our schools have been very busy celebrating their teachers we have a delayed celebration next Wednesday the Allison is working hard with minatrista to be able to to celebrate our teachers between four o'clock and six o'clock and so that will give us an opportunity

093Minnetrista can show our teachers some other opportunities for students out at Minnetrista so we think that will go really well for us so you're all invited please join us we finished up our process checks this week Monday we were at West View and I wanted to share with all of you that we heard from many of the teachers either new teachers or veteran teachers they all were very grateful for their raises and so I know that you you did that and they're they're recognizing not only being grateful for their raises but they said that they feel support from the board from Administration so that Chuck and I went to tape record them and bring it so it's always good to hear so I wanted to pass that along to you process checks are really important

094it takes you know we go and we're in schools all day we get to hear from teachers so in the past one thing that we heard that we changed was that Project Lead the Way was just great program kids loved it but was putting a lot of additional responsibilities on classroom teachers so we hired an extra teacher that's a Project Lead the Way teacher at each of the elementary schools this year during process checks two big takeaways that I have on my list one teachers from all the schools told us how incredibly hard e-learning is they said it takes so much time to prepare for it um it's very stressful for them it's hard for families who are trying to have students participate many of the students have technology issues and you know they can't

095be right next to them to help solve it or we heard from teachers that they may only have one or two students participate and so it's not a very beneficial day so Chuck is going back to the calendar committee for us to figure out some other things to do with e-learning and that is not what we were expecting to hear at all but again it was every single school all the teachers mentioned it to us and so um that's one way our process checks we're hearing from teachers and we try to respond to to what their share ring we also had two of our schools really shared that their schedules were so difficult because they needed more playground equipment and so we were able to quickly adjust to that and a little bit later um

096you'll hear from Jim who we're going to bring something on to the to the agenda to be able to address that so we are really grateful that teachers are are so candid with us and and share things and then we're able to make decisions or move forward based on some needs check later is going to be sharing the PD calendar so I know Andy always does he puts together updates for all of our teachers so make sure that in my comments I'm encouraging all of them to participate in PD this summer we have many opportunities on Thursday is celebrate Excellence at the field house five o'clock to seven o'clock and we also will that's a kickoff to our All City Art Show so we're trying to combine a little so more families can see all

097the great work going on and then Thursday is also the Mac graduation I think it's Adult Ed at graduation at six o'clock seven o'clock oh I have an extra extra hour in there for celebrate Excellence I if you paid attention to the newspaper the turf was installed beginning on Friday kudos for Brad for overseeing that project is going really well and then great news for us Sarah England um had her little baby A little girl Josephine and they are home and they're doing well now so we're very happy for for Sarah great news uh anything further for Dr any questions the questions thank you Mr enser pardon mystery answer you're up that's my name foreign author after hearing all the work you're doing for students we have some questions about money but this is what

098was on the minds of people today of a government that will ban books and I hope you don't play into this because it'll create more problems with your education system more division among parents and taxpayers and frankly it's time to get down to helping these kids I see this program that works hopefully will be continued but as you well know going through the state budget uh there was both good and bad at least finally lawmakers have figured out that they should pay for textbooks uh the government the schools parents shouldn't have to pay anymore that's something they did but on the other side a banned books they gave Charter Schools I found out just the other day since I didn't go through the whole 400 page budget they're giving them property taxes now what's that

099about again I know School of Choice is overrun public education and fostered private and Charter School operations but they don't do the same work as public education I did see as far as the numbers the billion or two that they pumped into K-12 the Muncie schools would probably get a good stipend per student here this in 23 and 24 or upwards to and 9 900. the but the problem is that as you get more money from the state you're going to find that they're going to deteriorate public education by going through choice and that's what people want these days they want choice now maybe you stabilized uh enrollment but for how long and for how many when there are others out there getting the same money that you get and doing maybe less I saw

100something else that bothered me there wasn't a lot of accountability on the uh well whatever you're going to spend the night I haven't heard anything taxpayers haven't heard anything about more problems with schools that you have to repair or work that you have to do and of course you've heard me before that um a lot of people didn't like the idea to turn down the old State they thought that was uh just a spin Thrift move to put down a Turf and I don't think that was necessary they didn't tear down all elaborative field just to put it down the other issue too of course as I always say uh as far as buddy here there's no way public education should fund the pay-to-play operation with the YMCA they betrayed their uh ancestors of taking

101in homeless boys and men now all it is is a playground for those who can pay and I don't think that's a good idea to teach kids like that but anyway those are some of the things I thought about thank you thank you Mr Yen sir so at this point I want to invite Dr Bales to the podium so this evening is bittersweet um Brittany Bales has been a member of this board since the outset in July of 2018 she has brought passion and heart to um her role she has served with a great deal of compassion a great deal of consideration she brings a voice has brought a voice to this board that was extraordinarily valuable she's an advocate for children she's an advocate for teachers and that her heart she's an educator Dr

102King said life's most persistent and Urgent question is what are you doing for others and Brittany exemplifies that in her actions every day we will miss her dearly um we're all still adjusting I think to that it feels a little unbalanced tonight I think um and that's no comment on you guys [Laughter] um but you know our our loss from a governing perspective is the gain of the corporation from an educational perspective and and Britney's on the agenda for uh the assistant principal role at Grissom uh which uh she will bring a great deal of skill and she will make an extraordinary difference uh as she continues to exercise her servant's heart um so I just wanted to make sure you heard that and also to give you a moment if you like to speak

103and so the floor is yours um it's been an honor of privilege to set this table with you guys I've learned a lot I'm thankful for the friendships I hope that we'll stick around it was great it's worth it to you all and I'm positive that the trajectory we'll continue with that we have to do so much so that I'm going to come back home where I started my teaching career at Muncie most of you know that but you might not know that I started my own education at Grissom so it's very much kind of confident so I'm excited to be an astro again I'm ready to get started taking notes while you were talking I'm excited so thank you for trusting me um with all the little asteroids that I'm going to jump right

104in yeah we will miss you but I Grissom wool Grissom will gain immensely so thank you [Applause] so on to the consent agenda we have uh or do we have any other new teachers this evening with us any other folks who are just coming aboard um I want to recognize um Deborah Mizell who's is it myself who's retiring from Northside Middle School uh as the music teacher and she's been with MCS for 10 years and Northside will miss her um with that then there are two other contracts to add and I we can add them in the consensus agenda I presume um these are really exciting really exciting stuff we have two bids um for playground equipment at Longfellow Elementary Schools and it is AAA State of play and the total quote for that playground

105equipment is 168 192.40 and then we have uh and this one just tickles me pink um Mrs England Anglin was here in um what a month ago six weeks ago whatever however long ago asking about playground equipment and we have a bid for playground equipment for Ewa and that bid is two hundred thousand dollars this is being funded by essers other Federal grant Morrison mock um Ball Brothers foundation and kitzelman Foundation so this is funded is it entirely out of those funds track nerd brand okay so it is not coming out of the budgets being funded by um a variety of different sources who've been generous with MCS so uh that is exciting and being added since we are adding these and the necessity of doing that was to get those installed before the upcoming

106school year and if we postpone until June that was going to be questionable so any questions regarding either Ewa or Longfellows playground any questions at all outstanding okay so we have then our other items uh in the consent agenda with those items added again for the record the minutes that's uh Longfellow quote and the Ewa quote both from AAA State of play um any any questions regarding any other matter in the consent agenda if not we'll entertain a motion so do we have to motion to change the consent agenda yeah it probably wouldn't hurt let's let's go ahead and do emotional I'll make that motion unless so too we're done day I'll second it okay okay all those in favor of going ahead and adding the playground quotes to the consent agenda signify bye hi

107hi same sign thank you now with the consent agenda as a whole with those items added uh you know do I have motion to approve been moved seconds and seconded uh any additional comment okay uh all those in favor signify post same sign okay thank you we have uh on item 6.01 Mr Jerome award contract for construction manager is the Constructor yes thank you uh presented in your board packet tonight was the uh potential motion here to permission to aboard a contract for construction managers Constructor and that would be awarded to Core Construction this particular project is for phase two of our 2023 uh Muncie Central uh Bond project this will help us there at the football stadium and the track what this will do is help us build the uh concession stands and restrooms

108there on site and we are pleased to make that recommendation Core Construction has helped us with three of the Esser projects and two other projects we have pending here they've helped us with reportable classrooms at Westview and Northview as also the previous 2022 Bond project so with that I'd like to recommend Core Construction as a construction manager as Constructor what that means is for construction will be the one that bears the burden of the bids when they actually take bids on the particular project and that's kind of a new way of a new way of doing construction manager here in Indiana that kind of follows the higher education model that was in place a few years ago and I think Mr Lowe for helping us introducing us to that concept it's worked really well and

109that's why I'm happy to make that recommendation to the board okay any questions for Mr Durham I just like to thank core they've done a wonderful job thank you for what you do thank you Brad He's Mr construction it's amazing what you're doing and see it and what other hats you wear that Dr K says food service but thank you okay we have a motion do I hear a second second you're the second third Halls of paper 65 bye all right same sign okay thank you financial report uh thank you uh also including your board packet is the update after four uh four months four calendar months through April I'm always happy to report when we receive our state basic Grant Revenue uh on time still projecting to get about 43.4 million dollars uh it

110could be uh that could be slightly conservative it might be a little higher once we get the new uh funding formula of course the legislative session just ended um it's been very favorable to Muncie schools even with a projected enrollment I think they projected our enrollment basically flat but still a higher Revenue per student so that's where we have been benefiting from that um so that's been that's been a positive thing we're still our overall cash balance at the end of April was in our checkbook was 34.3 million dollars uh obviously that's still a very high amount still at the end of April our education fund balance 16.3 million we have our outstanding State loan balance that's down to 10.3 million we've paid a million seven so far you're in date so that just kind

111of summarizes our financial report and uh for the end of end of April okay any questions for Mr Jerome regarding the financial report hearing none do I hear emotionally approved financial report so moved same sign okay we're under the bond project legal notices yes thank you uh also included in your board packet uh this is the continuation of the this is the 2023 uh Bond project really kind of phase two of our construction uh what we'll be doing tonight we'll uh we will have uh three resolutions to be considered and passed by the school board we have uh one particular resolution uh determining the need for the project that's considered exhibit a resolution you have the resolution reapproving the building Corporation because this would involve uh selling bonds once again I also have Exhibit C

112which is a resolution approving the form of a lease uh and just to remind you this particular project to be there at the Muncie Central uh High School site is about six point or one million dollars it will be paid for with bonds it will be paid for with basically a two-year two-year average station schedule that's why it's considered tax neutral it's like having a two-year car loan or a two-year house loan but that's the way uh the why have we structured it that way to be tax neutral and that's how the baker Tilly uh financial consultants have structured that for me and uh that's what I bring for you tonight so that's a brief reminder of what the project was and these three particular resolutions I'm asking for consideration than tonight okay so with

113that we need to open our public hearing for additional appropriation is that right well first first approve a notice in the resolution yeah this is separate the three notices I've given you here uh exhibit a exhibit B and Exhibit C those are separate okay so do you need a separate approval on those uh you can you can take those all at once if you wish yeah so we have three notices those been have been in your board packet any questions concerning the notices moved and seconded all those in favor signify bye aye opposed same sign Okay so we've got then resolution determining a need for the project resolution reapproving the building Corporation resolution proving the form of lease exhibits a b and c respectively um any questions regarding any of those exhibits if not with

114annotation came to motion to approve is exhibits a b and c then move do I hear a second second moved and seconded any additional uh discussion with that um all the favor signify uh by aye aye opposed same sign okay show those proved Now we move on to um the public hearing yep no let me if I could I'll introduce it for you then sure go ahead and do that uh this was uh separate this was a separate uh from the uh previous mentioned uh Bond project what this does this is our to conduct a public hearing to consider an additional appropriation that I'm asking the school board to consider uh in the following ways for the additional amount for the rainy day fund for 2023 for two and a half million dollars and also

115an additional appropriation for Debt Service fund of 2.5 million twenty thousand five hundred dollars uh I'm asking for this additional appropriation to help us with our spending in our 2023 uh budget we already have those funds in place for the rainy day fund and we'll already have those funds in place to make our total spending for Debt Service as well it's just uh the budget as approved by the dlgf back in December didn't have the finalized Debt Service payments yet uh for the bonds that we had just done so this allows Muncie schools to be able to spend to an approved limit um we're not increasing the tax rate by doing this because the funds would be in place so at this time I've tried to explain why we're asking for the additional appropriation and

116then this would be the appropriate time for the board president to conduct the public hearing to ask the public to respond or comment about the additional Appropriations for the rainy day fund or The Debt Service fund at this time okay and this is our second hearing correct yeah last last week we or last month we introduced the concept and the permission to advertise and tonight is the actual uh public hearing and then following up on last month's meeting it's my understanding for the benefit of the public and the board that we expect to replenish the rainy day funds in the fall that is correct I did not mention that tonight but it's still still my plan uh still I still our plan here at Muncie schools to continue to replenish the rainy day fund uh

117in 2023. usually I do that in November or December of a calendar year okay thank you with that we will declare open the public hearing for the additional appropriation as noticed to the taxpayers regarding the transfer of funds from The Debt Service fund and from the rainy day fund at this time we will open the meeting for public comment does anyone have a public comment regarding the additional appropriation again Ricky answer I just want to make sure that you are going to pay back for any day did he just say that yeah I thought you said that yeah I thought so too that's what I heard okay well because again as I've said before I don't think any school or government holds millions of dollars in cash need to borrow transfer or hardly do anything

118else other than pay the bills and spend the money because a lot of this borrowing still only benefits the people who are the investors the banks thank you thank you Mr answer any additional public comment an additional public comment okay uh would entertain then an emotion or pardon me um a motion to approve the additional appropriation resolution it's almost second any additional questions or concerns okay would enter then all those would ever signify by I I suppose same sign okay we will show the additional appropriation approved um Mr Durham um do I hear a motion to adjourn the public hearing so I'm been moved do I hear a second second uh with that all in favor of rejoining the public hearing signified bye same sign okay um Mr answer any media questions [Music] careful members

119mentioned tonight anything you can do to address a lot of these homeless families because they are literally so I was thinking I'll ask you a question you can answer you choose to answer or not so in hearing your last comment at the public hearing you can consider yourself a hamiltonian or a Jeffersonian uh actually I'm an American and like I say um you know just take care of our kids and there's always somebody blocking over defending the money yeah no I was just that that was the same debate that was the the same that debate on debt versus no debt was oh yeah yeah it was Hamilton Jefferson so I you you're definitely a Jeffersonian yeah so well that's because of extraordinarily prudent management by that man over there and by this folk and and

120by the oversight of this board and particularly Mr Heater that didn't happen that didn't just happen that that took a lot of effort and skill and sweat and tension and we're not going to Fritter it away okay thank you uh anything further should we mention Kyra's karizik sorry so she has she has been awarded the Excellence in teaching award by the ball brother Foundation um they will have a celebration for her on May 23rd at Minnetrista and um you know she she is our dual language immersion teacher at Westview fabulous teacher and not only is she such a great teacher she also is very involved in our community so I know um they were a host family for one of our Afghan families that came here and I know there are numerous ways that she

121and her husband are very involved in this community and so very well deserved yeah I think that's a great recognition I'm sorry if I well I thought I mentioned it at the last but maybe I did not so I'm glad you mentioned that yes thank you and so following up on Mr inser's comments and and he took his leave but I do want to a couple of comments I want to thank the legislature for um reopening a budget and supplying funds um for the educational fund so I do want to take note I mean we're we're certainly uh there's obviously as legislation is passed it um it takes a while to get it in to the format where it's easily readable um in my world by Statute and I know that our folks are going

122to study the the statutes and see what applies to us but I do want to sound a cautionary note um as I read the statute that Mr yenser referred to on the front page of the paper it would involve potentially parents around the state who or others who question um items and books and libraries in classrooms and then the board our school boards around the state would be at least the initial Arbiter of that challenge and the cautionary note I want to sound is that I looked at this oh over the past several days and just a short listing of books that have been periodically challenged or banned for periods over the last 80 years include the following The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald The Catcher in the Rye by J.D salons or The

123Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee The Color Purple by Alice Walker Ulysses by James Joyce which um for those literature scholars in the room I've attempted many many times to try and read Ulysses because I heard you should and it's impenetrable which so I I can't gather anything out of it obscene or otherwise [Laughter] beloved by Tony Morrison 1984 by George Orwell Animal Farm by George Orwell Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck one of my personal favorites Catch-22 by Joseph Hillary farewell Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway winning the Nobel Prize for literature in the early 50s Native Son by Richard Wright which I read in college Slaughterhouse Five by our own Hoosier Kurt Vonnegut Shortridge High School um and I I go through that listing just to

124show the whims of time um you know we go through these periods the statute that's out there and a meriting front page news in one of the newspapers here within the past week is it's a new statute it's not a new issue and I think there this board will be responsible if faced with those questions we have in the past um and I just want us to be sober about the process and to caution um that um there are times when the pressures of the moment lead to challenges and concerns which in retrospect will be our Shea so with that anything further entertain a motion to adjourn moved in Sacramento all those in favor signify bye same sign thank you
