thank you Cindy f it's real tight [Music] my good evening everyone welcome to tonight's board meeting if you are able please stand and join us iedge Al to of the United States America to the for stands one nation indivisible thank you item number four is adoption of our agenda we have a very large board present this evening so you will seeing a lot of redundancy uh if I could get a motion to approve tonight's or to adopt tonight's agenda all dor I you um item number five is our public hearing regarding our adjacent ways Levy I'm gonna do call to the public first got thrown by this whole not starting at five o'clock thing item five is actually call to the public and we do have two people that would like to speak with us

tonight first up is Miss K ler with the Chino Valley Historical Society I would never forget you K I'm sorry Hi everybody I'm K ler next week will be my 30th year in Chino Valley next month next month so still and I recently retired from our our library I work there with in the cataloging office with Scott and um this is my 11th year as president of the historical society and I wanted to invite you specifically to our our new Museum our new our museum across the street in the spring but I got Co so I didn't get that together to invite you so I'm hoping this fall that somehow we have a specific time when you all can come and see the museum on your own and and just get in-depth tool of the

place so I wanted to kind have you thinking about that when it cools down a little bit um that museum exists because of you in 2008 Jeremy Plum got us involved with um the Cooper EG Center and we had the little horse barn Leon's horse barn from 2008 till 2122 when they asked us to swap with the old dairy barn so now we've had the old dairy barn it took a year to redo the doors put in Windows get all the junk H I know my volunteers have been incredible on that and then in so the last two years we've been we've been open this is our second year that we're open now and we can only be open when the weather's good because there's no heating or cooling it so we have um April

May and midt and October and so so sometimes sometime when it cools down in September maybe or maybe after October meeting we can go walk across the street we'll see what happens I like to be sure to invite you all to come to that um the historical society is 21 years old I think now um and we have had great programs and we had field trips and we have this great museum now so if you're not aware of it right across the street caddy corner here is a Cooper egg Center Museum and the we're very we're very proud of the work we have amazing volunteers Jeff and Kim who are there almost every week you'll see them out there cleaning painting doing carpentry work we've had donations from Earthworks for gravel Ace gave us money

for paint Chino rentals loans this big equipment one in fact someone donated a bunch of railroad signs and signals to us this spring Mr Tona and U our volunteers got together and and Remy tenberg himself came to Peter's house with his with equipment of his crew and helped dig them out the ground and bring them over here and and get them set up at the at the Museum so we have a whole really nice we've already had had two old railroad foam booths one from Del Rio and one from Jerome Junction but this really adds to that really lets people know this is a railroad exhibit so we're very very thankful for that and I recently put up a new exhibit on chino Valley's historic properties which has been really popular people oh that was

my the lady that had the the hair salon so anyway I did want oh for our plans for the future we' would love to have some big events there um and I'd like to coordinate with with the program but they're they're so um constricted by their their their school schedule and their responsibilities it hasn't worked out yet but someday we'll do that and um oh yes the house the duplex up front had issues when they worked on it before it has it has um trouble with the foundation and with the ceiling trusses and I'm working still working on getting historic registration application done for it because once we get that listed we can start applying for Grants and I was just at the hisor preservation conferences last week before this and the last thing was

about funding and there's a state parks funds but I found out that because you are connected to the state you're not eligible for State Park funds but you could form a foundation and that Foundation could then do it but there's also a lot of other funding too so just things to think about in the future and what I'm what keeps me awake at night so I thank you for your time and hope we see you at the Museum this fall any questions what hours we're open 10 to one I like 9 to one better Butte I Saturday mornings um in in September mid September I forgot my and October and April and May from 10 to1 and the and the entrance is right across from um the back from the back parking lot at the

log Cen bar it's a great little Museum if you guys haven't been there the neat thing is is leavon Cooper I don't know if you I didn't tell you that part that this property was um a Land Development company in 1914 in Cheto Valley imagine and they set that up as a demonstration Farm to sell had 4,000 acres of land they were selling 40 acre lots and they built Watson Lake Dan and they brought the water via canals to the lots that they were selling and uh um and that was a demonstration farm and the house on the south end was where the manager lived and the one on the North End where they conducted business there's a big old Vault you see that big cement thing sticking out the north side that's the Vault

and then all that was the the dairy and they had vegetable gardens with a lot of cabin is they planted Alfalfa and they were there until 1926 and various people owned it in between and in 1945 OT and Georgia TR alata and their daughter leavon so leavon came in 1945 she was in her mid early to mid 20s and she ended up marrying Ken Cooper who had the Chino grains which is not Olson's grain and that's how became the Cooper farm and they lived there they got married 1946 she died in 2004 and he was there to 2007 so that really is their home their place and I didn't realize that she had set up those demonstration rooms in the in the barn already lot of a lot of work she did so come and

see Leon's work and come and see our Museum thank you K yes you know I talking about the railroads Chino Valley was here because the railroads tell the folks what the original name of Chino Valley was Jerome oh Jerome Junction yeah yeah J that was the original name of Gino Valley why because the Narrow Gauge from Jerome came to the main line of Santa Fe where perkville Road and that's where the post office was and then when they folded then the post office moved into Chino and became Chino Valley then the railroad disappeared other people came and fart but it was a railroad town were here because it was a railroad town so come and I've got come and see our demonstration on the railroads in the and and our new railroad exib thank you

so much thank you next we have Miss Jamie m mine is on a totally different thing thank you for for listening um my husband and I he's been here in Chino Valley for quite a few years more than I have I've been here about 20 years and we're older parents we have a 12-year-old daughter um she's been going to Chino Valley Public School since preschool she knows Brandy Cox very well um we love the schools her first year of sixth grade she just ended this last year year we are not loving the zero to four common creating system um my daughter is a very great girl um she's she caught like she will not miss a day at school she wants to be there every day she's usually on the principal list um she's in

student council she volunteers to help kids and this last year of sixth grade was tough for her plus a lot of other children I know um every teacher that we talked to on the the 0o to four common grading scale said that she was one of her their best students that she was a role model that she helped other children but in the five different numbers that they get um without when we went to parent teacher conferences we would ask every teacher how do you grade and every single teacher that we talked to had a different way of grading some said that they did did it on average but most said that even though she had mostly fours they had to give her what was on a certain testing that she had so she got

multiple twos this last year supposedly she was one of the best students in the class her the first semester she cried her eyes out she said Mom I don't feel that because kids come to me for help I don't feel that I can help them anymore that I'm not smart enough I know lots of children that are grounded because they have twos and threes like on a regular basis with this new Common Core um and even though we're told time and time again it's not a a c d or fail um that's how the parents see it that's how the kids see it um she was asked by one of her teachers to be in the Honor Society well she was not able to fill that out because she had twos throughout the year and

the actual paperwork that was with the Honor Society said if you have threes and fours the whole year and they had in parenthesis A's and B's that you would could be part of the Honor Society he's in student council he loves school but she hasn't been loving it this year because of the grading system she feels like no matter what she does that she's not doing well enough um so I'm not not sure exactly who put it into place I can see at a younger age like kindergarten first grade where the kids are just learning where it shows that they have room to improve um and I feel for kids that are struggling and that are having a hard time but when every teacher grades a different way and I'm told that she's one of

the best children in the class and that she helps everyone and is smart I'm like what can we do to help her nothing she's doing a great job well then how come she's getting a too so we're not a fan we're actually thinking about pulling her to another school because of the gring system um the other thing that we've noticed like when we went to um Awards ceremonies stuff like that that the discipline is not great um my daughter tells me a things that happen all the time like there was a a teacher that had moved from the Philippines um teaching at Heritage the kids were awful to her she said Mom I feel so bad for her she said I gave her a hug every day because the kids were so awful swearing at

her misbehaving and there was never any disciplinary act they would just talk to the discipline coach and then they would talk about it and then it was over with so I'm older so I feel like the discipline was a lot more when I was younger but we've never seen that happen in territorial or Del Rio so I just feel like um there's more that could be done with Heritage Middle School and um I don't know whether the parents have a choice on whether we stick with this grading system or not um and I should probably do some more research to find out like how this actually was voted in so but um I just want everyone to know that it and it's not just my child I'm a girl scout leader so all of my

Girl Scouts have had some of the same issues and I've talked to their parents about it and some of my daughter's friends so I just feel that it's it's not really helping the children and when they had the numeral not the numeral the the letter grades it pushed them to do better and now my daughter's like well I guess I'm going to get whatever they give me I thought I was doing great instead of saying oh if I do extra credit or if I work really hard then I can get an A instead of not knowing what they're going to get regardless of how we're doing so thank you for hearing me um like I said my husband and I are very involved in my daughter and her school and the community and I just

feel that um that this common grading scale is not benefiting our children so I didn't set the timer but sounds like you're done so I if you would like we can't respond to your comments here but if you'd like to for the rest of the meeting this will be discussed so if you would like to stay you're more than welcome like I said I just got off work and threw some clothes on to make it here in time but I just felt short that's very important for the school absolutely thank you for your comments what a coincidence that's awesome all right public hearing time um for our adjacent ways if we could have a motion to go into public hearing um in well it as a second all in favor all right Mr Livingston please

yes mam president members of the board we have a an opportunity to reach out to the public and let them know some of our needs uh I did a little bit of research before the meeting for at least the last five years the district has had a lot of needs in maintaining fire Lanes throughout the district there's about eight different areas if you went through every campus there's about eight different areas that need either slurry seal coat repair or chip seal or alligator crack repair where the the moisture has actually separated the the surface asphalt down at least three inches that needs to then be removed rep placed reinforced more than just a chip seal on the top or a slurry seal coat and there's a few places in the district I've walked with our

maintenance director um that need subsurface removal of either incorrectly compacted materials or materials that have failed over time some of these are under our solar arrays over on the west side of of the highway over at Del Rio and Heritage Middle School uh I've only been in the district three and a half years but those of you that have been here longer um know that when the floods come on the south side of Del Rio and cross that road and keep going north they don't obey our uh our property rules which are you know please go way to the west or way to the east they go right down Del Rio parking and right down Heritage Middle School parking I was there last year when there was a flood before we did a lot of

work uh and there was four inches of water standing in the Delio Park Lot water tends to be responsive to gravity so it pulls it down into those subsurface areas and some of those areas under our overhead solar panel struts pillars if you want to call them aren't necessarily Firelane the the monies that we're talking about tonight increasing our our Levy to local taxpayers would go to fix fire lane primarily and curban gutter needs of the district we have a quote that we got back in May two months ago from a valley based it's a roadrunner asphalt Valley based company that's on a state contract so some of the profit has been uh scraped off of that and limited because they serve a lot of public sector entities like us over 1.3 million to do

some subsurf or some some on-surface repairs chip seal slurry seal coat uh and a little bit of subsurface soil removal and compaction and that's not comprehensive that's just from a visit we did last year and they remember the conditions and I said if your conditions been improved we said no they haven't been improved uh so we have a at least 1.2 million worth of work we could move on the last six or seven years I've looked at the levy uh couple years it was Zero for several years it's been a 100,000 our district evalu or net assess valuation has gone from 200 million to 275 million which is a good thing keeps that keeps that rate down what we did is for the last several years we were bringing in a 100,000 the last four

years every year that resulted in about a $400 cost per $100,000 home value last year well this is the year just ended the 24 year 23 24 year we took it from 100,000 Levy up to 250,000 that resulted in a $993 cost per 100,000 valuation and this year we want to take it up to $350,000 U which is still going to be $12.66 per valuation um and those are the reasons we need this uh if we don't repair and maintain our surfaces um they tend to deteriorate based on heat and water damage I'm not sure when our track surface at the high school was installed I think it was 20078 n in that time period uh summer of 2022 the cracks on our high school track having not been repaired some cases were four inches

wide and six inches deep and the ground there at the north east corner of the track had to be removed about 3 ft down and for almost 100 yards almost a quarter of the quarter mile track subsurface 2 feet down some some cases 3 feet down after the track surface is removed we had contractors in there for a month doing that and then getting that ground prepped so it was solid enough to hold the track and that's just for a track that's not for vehicles so and that project was $658,000 uh the one over Del Rio school if you've been to the south end of Del Rio where we completely put in French drains drained that water to the west and reinforced it $486,000 last year so that's a compact area where we reinforced it

that we were able to use that fire lane in the in the statute that we can raise These funds under that fire lane to the east side of Del Rio School uh that whole area that we paved is considered fire if we have a fire event fir tracks would have to be able to have access to that whole place so that was eligible for these funds um and sadly we didn't have enough funds on hand so we had to use our own Capital funds last year in addition to maybe 880,000 from these funds these are called adjacent ways kban Gutter and Fir Lane work is is kind of what they're limited to Mr Moody anything to add to that that parking lot is amazing we've had two major flooding um rains and they filled the

reservoir and there wasn't any standing water in our parking lot so after having Lake Del Rio for quite some time you can even walk in the South door there without getting yeah you can walk in without getting water you could walk to your car without a boat it was it was nice that's all I have any questions or comments gentlemen anyone from the public any questions comments all right seeing none I'll entertain a motion to close our public hearing so moved second all in favor perfect I also item 6B is another public hearing this one regarding our budget for 2425 fiscal year again a motion to open tonight's public hearing so all in favor I Mr Livingston thank you thank you so a quick summary of of three of our funds that are what we

call primary funds for our bu budget and a quick update on where we're at with those so the year just ended I I call that current year because I'm working in that year probably till the middle of September we have 17 grants that we're working on and some of those cross fiscal years our year end is clearly June 30th the federal government's year end is September 30th we ran into an entity the other day whose year end was April 30th U so when grants go beyond fiscal years we're continually um alloca any money and and dealing with last year so the year ended June 30th of 2024 our operating budget was an even 20 million our capital budget was a of two million and our our large fund that we like to reserve for Teacher

expenses and related expenses like that classroom site fund fund 010 was three million for budgets uh this year our budgets reflect a couple different things we don't have a lot of student growth uh we've had some expenses that we dealt with last year uh including the over 400,000 from Capital fund for the Del parking lot other areas the fire lane over there so the new budget for the 24 25 year based on there's about 15 different factors that the state looks at for operating budget has fallen from 20 million to 19 million 348 uh capital budget fell from 2 million to 1.1 million and the good news is because the state economy is still projected to be very strong we have a fund 010 that we call our classroom site fund again mainly for teachers

teacher salaries uh has jumped from 3 million up $400,000 so we really appreciate that and it's a base on a percentage of the returns that come to school districts from proper from income from sales tax in the state of Arizona so if that state sales tax fund continues to be very robust on consumer purchases etc etc we get a direct proportion of that and then we pass that through to instructional staff so those are the three updates uh we're aware that uh there's a lot of variables that go into this and we'll be bringing this back probably probably the October meeting to revise because when we got these factors from the state uh in June and we proposed this budget in June and we'll adopt it tonight I hope uh the final figures approved by

the legislature were not finalized yet so now they are but we have to revise that because we can't if we had that 19 milon 348 in our operating budget proposed we can't jump it up to about 19 million 650 or whatever it would be with the new figures we can't increase the proposed the adop and only wait till we revise that in October of the current year that's that's all I have question anyone in the audience any questions or comments once again seeing I only a motion to close public hearing regarding all in favor thank you moving along to item 7A tonight's superintendence report very first one miss in evening so this time in the packet we have all the goals from the Departments and from the schools the one exception is that you don't

have the academic goals in this packet because Julie Bryce is reporting on our state testing data from Spring at the August meeting and we'll be talking about some specifics regarding academics when she does that so she's on for the August board meeting presentation a few of the things I just wanted to remind everybody we have that May 29th planning day and that planning day was really that first step toward identifying our brand that we you know our our schools are safe that students leave here pre prepared for the workforce or prepared to continue their education and then we work together as a district to accomplish those things and so to that end each department um created some goals that align with our brand and align with the unique needs of that department and throughout the

school year you'll be receiving monthly updates on the things that they are celebrating achievements that they're making steps toward those goals and the things that they're continuing to Monitor and adjust as they go along I wanted to point out a couple of things because as a result of that um May 29th dat some people got a big jump start on it um our district RN under our safe and healthy students she wants to celebrate the fact that we have hired a second RN for the district so we have an RN on each side of the highways we have a health aid on each side of the highway and an RN on each side of the highway so we really believe that that UPS the services that we can offer to students we have students with

some pretty significant medical needs and this is a way of providing for that and you might remember a few board meetings ago that um the board decided as we have health aids who leave the district for whatever reason move on some have gone on to RN to school to become RNs that will be replacing the any vacant health aid positions going forward with EMTs because an EMT can perform medical procedures that is CNA cannot we have kids with some pretty profound um needs and apparatus and Specialty certifications that goes along with that so she's super excited that we're able to hire a second RN at Heritage Middle School um one of the things that they are celebrating um a little prematurely but truthfully it's a roll out of a refined student handbook and discipline Matrix

to address some of the discipline concerns that we've heard tonight and we'll also o be hearing later in the agenda I think it's probably a an early on celebration about a return pending board acceptance a return to a traditional grading system at Heritage for our special needs Learners one of our biggest celebrations I think Nicole would be would be the first on board this was her first celebration is that we were able to hire h a district psychologist who is full-time for the district so because we've been Outsourcing a lot of our psych services so it not only saves the district money but provides additional provides extra services at a lower cost so that was a fantastic celebration it's pretty cool that like you set the goals and early on you're already starting to hit

some of the mark So Deo even though they're not um our district employee they really do see themselves as a partner Department with us um one of their goals was to increase the number of meals served throughout our summer feeding program and we closed um April and May with participation counts higher and our June participation counts at our grab and go and our on-site our congregate meals at Del Rio have been hired so that's a celebration transportation is celebrating because they have a high percentage of Staff returning which is phenomenal so those are some of our early celebrations some of the other things so any questions that you have about what you see for goals we have quite a few people in the room are responsible for the goals questions you might have about their

goals or celebrations they can answer too this is by stupid question second page okay goals and strategy Community Partnerships what are one Pride cards so we have cards that go out so on our Community Partnerships we have our what's great about Chino Valley cards and so what we are expanding this year is for our business partners to have um a poster they can display in their business that shows that they're part of our pride that they're part of our district that they support us and we have we normally hand out our what's great cards to people there will be a QR code on that that they can scan to learn even more about the district so they'll be partners with the pride um and it could be businesses it could be government agencies it could

be anybody who wants to stand out there and say we stand with the school district and support education in Chino Valley given out to customers available for customers at the Y available for customers and um posters that will hang in facilities and with a QR code on them with a QR code on them so yeah we're trying to step a little forward but yeah we're in the process we updated the what's great list last week and um we're working on the the poster design and the QR code this week so thank you yeah you're welcome any other questions about the goals comments I love it regarding any that might be taking place at any of the schools anything anything you want all right so um yeah I'm very curious at the high school um how

it is that you're able to plan in two PLC meetings a month we have so Wednesday if you want the microphone pick up too camera um we we safeguarded Wednesdays are kind of a sacred day for us so Wednesday mornings we don't schedule anything else so we've got two PLC scheduled a month um one of those Wednesdays will be a department or I'm sorry a grade level team meeting so plc's will happen in departments then we'll do a grade level team meeting to help work in and incorporate some character we're kind of taking some tips from the rest of our schools and I think that would be beneficial at the high school um and then the other Wednesday is a staff meeting so two department meetings one staff one grade level team just can I

impose on you to introduce your new team member I would love to uh so we have he's here in the flesh from Georgia Billy Richardson which he very helpful already so just started last week what role are is he playing he is one of we have two assistant principles so when Marty campelli shifted over to the Middle School um we were able to fill the position with Mr Richardson okay so you're um you're able to meet those meeting times before school and after school so that class yes uh po school so 7:30 to 8:15 okay uh some teachers electives it's a little bit unique because some of our teachers are not on campus at that time so they might meet in the afternoon but either way we all meet like Wednesdays is a sacred day

or at least one day a week and if they need an acceptance granted to them they need to come to thank you actually I so some I got my high school notes too um and this is my ignorance what does the ter term unwrapped standards mean on what does it mean to unwrap standards unwrap unwrap unwrap so one of our goals we are we are we we will leave in standards Based Teaching not necessarily A standards based grading system but um one of our goals is to make sure that throughout the entire school year we started this in April so we practiced it we have an unwrapping the standard document where the teacher has to identify what are the nouns verbs so what is it that we need the kids to do what are the

skills that we they have to have um what's the success criteria look like so once we understand completely what the standard is asking then we can start building a learning task to align to it oftentimes and it's not people work really hard designing am amazing beautiful lessons but sometimes it's a little bit backwards where we design this amazing lesson and then we find we try to find a standard to fit to it rather our goal is to be a little bit more authentic and intentional with teaching to the standards uh we did a lot of Summer work this this summer too a lot of Summer work linking implementation with the standard itself basically yeah we're going to make the the standards have always been a reference but they are going to be our Lighthouse now

they're going to guide us yeah thank you good I have one more I'm sorry okay the the last one which says improve athletic systems and communic I have no idea what that means either um in our athletic department there's there have just been some frustrations I'll be honest um with either communicating with a a part-time athletic director we just hired a new athletic secretary and so some things fell by the wayside and we want to make sure that while we're focusing on academics Athletics is a huge component of what we do it gets kids involved and engaged and so we're working on streamlining the communication systems I only have to so out of our 10 sports programs um and then there's some boys and girls included in that most of my coaches are off-campus coaches

only two are on campus so working out a system to make sure that they get the information that they need especially with banking um and just making sure that they're properly trained we're working on stream streamlining having actual systems in place not just kind of institutional knowledge what's been passed down we're formalizing it more going to document the process for doing with your coaching staff and which will then make it hard copy to make it easier to evaluate yeah and also helping my athletic director um the athletic director should be the coach of all coaches and so I want him to take a little bit more lead on what the direction and create a vision and a direction for Athletic program so we're gonna be getting more into the management that's super thank you you're

welcome [Applause] thank [Music] you so after the goals is a section that has a letter that all staff received near the end of the week last week karon worked super hard to get that out about orientation so on July 31st our all District Welcome days you you'll have you see the letter that the staff received and then you see the schedule for that morning and as always you're invited to come to particip participate in as much or as little as you want because we all know that bloodb pathogens is super riveting and you wouldn't want to miss that training will it count for the one I actually have to take yeah well it counts here so that's just to give you an idea what that warning looks like and then on the back of that

page is the detailed calender of events between now and the first day of school that you may be interested in a attending we didn't include everything because we didn't think you wanted to come to like restraint training or CPR or things like that but we did includ in two of the things that I think you'll be the most interested in are uh Monday July 22nd is the new teacher breakfast at the high school so check-in starts at 7 The Breakfast really is 7 to 8ish and then we do other orientation activities with the new teachers that's going to be in the culinary room like usual except we're going to eat on the patio this year weather permitting and it would be super awesome if the weather didn't permit and we had to scramble just somewhere

dry but you know we'll hold out hope and then the other one is of course the July 31st date so those of all the things um we have this coming Saturday is the um the backpack giveaway we've had about 500 phone calls go out that's by invite so we can make sure that the students who need the backpack school supplies first day of school outfit underwear socks hygiene items that they all have access to that so that the calls have gone out for the invite for that our Kegan training which is instructional strategies will actually be taking place at the Grace Family Center at where we had our May 29th typically we have it in the cafeteria at HMS but the HMS kitchen is getting new flooring so all the cafeteria equip the kitchen equipment

will be in the cafeteria and so we don't have anywhere else in the district large enough to accommodate the group so we'll be where we were at together on may29th um so that's in a small building the front yes sir yep so and then you'll see um we have our new teacher Academy is extended over four mornings and bry's got her kindergarten jump start going on in there so we can get all the kids assessed who are coming to kindergarten so and then I did put all the meet the teacher events on there for you in case you want to wander the campuses well kids and parents are wandering the campuses meeting the teacher so those are the things that are coming that's that's a small list of the things that are happening in the

next month do you happen to know where we are where we're at with the back to school Fair do we have all the we have all the needs met for the kids so we have um adequate supplies for all of the students who've been invited Plus we have more so what we do is on that day this week they're already starting setting up in the gym and they like kind of pick away at it all week um we have many community volunteers who come and help you're welcome to drop in anytime during the backpack giveaway on Saturday or to come and help we have transportation there because we've redone the bus routes so the new bus routes will be going up on the website this week but people could get a hard copy also forms

that they may need to fill out we have translators there um but they'll everything so what happens is they check in they get a sticker that says about like the kid or the age group or whatever they get the backpack with all of the stuff that's the right thing for their age group so we have adequate for that then we do have um plenty of other supplies for walk-ins a lot of times after meet the teacher or during that first week of school we especially get high school kids that need supplies so we're poised to meet that all year long Lory shops every sale and so it's a um it's an event sponsored by Chino Valley Education Foundation for our students in need so other questions about the upcoming events okay so construction projects so

hbac is underway at Tech they've been ripping around over there all summer it's been interesting getting in and out of territorial so far this summer with all the construction on the road the really nice thing is the road's wide enough for a bus and a car now so that should cut down on um a slight amount of first day frustration um we have the we're waiting on the Portables to be moved to the school sites with which would be Tech and cbhs um Ed said that they're breaking down the Portables at Del Rio today uh they were there today they have the skirting done and they've already separated both Portables like apart from each other so I expect the end of the week they going to be Haul on those things ripping down my fence

and haul on those things those are scheduled to go to cbhs as far as we know so those will go um out here sort of near the tennis courts just east of the tennis courts is where they'll be at cbhs and then um we have the Portables at our HMS scheduled to go to Tech right now the office at HMS is currently in the Portables Caitlyn's got the world's biggest office right now size the classroom and U she'll have to give it up go back to her cubby hole sooner or later we were waiting on um final notification firm school facilities board for building renewal to replace the ceiling tiles and the light fixtures and the offset HMS it's been on hold because they were waiting for new fiscal year to roll um new fiscal

year is rolled we are not counting on but that they'll be in there before the first day of school no promises we're we're hoping otherwise she's not really in the back 40 but she's you know out there so they're out there um and then we so once that's done then those Portables will go to Tech the wood shop expansion is underway it's looking really good they're creating the exterior to look like similar to the rest of the HMS campus and there's a little HVAC that we're waiting on to complete that wood shop expansion you'll remember that we had a large Grant from Mountain Institute to expand our wood shop there and we also had a large Grant to enhance our Robotics and unmanned aircraft system program at HMS so all of the things have come

in for that and we're hoping that the wood shop will be done before school starts it's it's the agback piece right so and then we have the final going in or the new flooring going in at the kitchen at Territorial and HMS those are scheduled to start later this week um moving the kitchen equipment out into the cafeterias redoing the floors in the kitchen because the old vinyl super old was cracked and water can can grow stuff can get underneath so that's what and what I wanted to say was that John Livingston and Chris Sheriff were totally dog with a bone I sat in on one of the phone calls with school facilities board and that flooring alone they were able to get it at zero cost to the district and that is a huge

accomplishment because it's something one of the questions always is what have you done to maintain your flooring watch it so other than that but they were open to replacing it and at no cost to us and I every little bit we do that school facilities board pays for saves the district tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of dollars so that's something I want to celebrate this month is that in the spirit of our together theme John and Chris have worked extremely well together if if they could not work as well together as they do we would not have all the projects underway that we do so kudos to both John and Chris so nice any questions all right well thank you welcome item 7B Financial reports for June 30th 2024 Mr Livingston yes

uh board report I I've got just a few updates on expenditures we have until the and little bit on Revenue not a lot on Revenue we have until the about the 10th of September if we have late revenues coming in for a project we could still Place those in the 2 for Ledger Ledger for the year Clos June 30th we can still pay bills for sure up until about August 20th and then the County Schools offices you've had enough time to pay for goods and services received by June 30th so this is the one of three reports you'll get that I've given you tonight this is an actual date with our our transactions and the County Schools office transactions that ended calendar-wise chronologically wise June 30th there will be more activity in this ledger so

you're going to get at the at the August meeting you're going to get another June report for the 2425 year and you're going to get July expenses for 2425 report number one and you're going to get report number 13 for the 24 year in the September meeting you're going to get an August report for 2425 and the 14th one for the 2324 and then as we get into October we're going to roll the cash and close the years so this is where we are right now uh expenditures if you look at our beginning page there as of the month of June as of that date June 30th on a budget of 20 million expenditures of 19,1 18,000 those have already been reduced because we know we have cash short funds so those expenditures are continuing

to drop if the money has arrived for those funds they don't have enough money and they're probably going to fall expenditures are probably going to fall to Ballpark 18,9 918 m950 which will bring around that 1 Mill million 1 million 50,000 carry forward into the 2425 year which we definitely have budgeted for the 2425 that does that mean our incumbrances will increase that same amount so I'm just talking about expenses for last year now yeah so these these so incumbrances let's let's see so the 456,000 right yes expenses are pretty much done they're pretty much done for the 24 year there's still that amount as of that date but uh yes those are going to fall at the same time those are going to fall incumbrances um because just remember when we have a a

purchase order for $310,000 for APS and we spend 246,000 that other 65 has to be incumbered so things like that that we always budget a little bit High because we don't want to be caught short those will continue to go down yes sir absolutely and then the other good news is that as we we get these cash short funds like the instructional Improvement based on Indian gaming casino revenue uh we've got 40 if you look on the cash report here towards the end we picked up $ 4,531 total we're going to get another 55,000 fall park that's what we've been getting for the last sever years so once that final revenue is booked in that fund then we can move some eligible costs in there that have already been paid in m so that takes

the M expenses down while the incumbrances go down at the same time same way really I wouldn't have put in the 2425 budget 1.1 million of carry forward unless I was pretty sure we were going have pretty much that so we're not there yet we're still waiting but it's coming so great great question yeah that's that's good news on uh Capital you look at the capital budget $2 million for the year end of June 30th of 24 expenditures 1,380 same things happening 468,000 encumbered those are falling as well we had some things that we were we were looking at there but we don't have final expenses it's coming and then you see the 416,000 we spent in the 620 fund at Jason ways we could have spent right up to our budget up to our

cash 524 but cash as if you go back to the cash report we ended the year in 620 fund that we could start next year with because it all carries for 278,000 use for those projects next year for the adjacent so we add the 350 to that 350,000 takes us up to about 620,000 for cash in that 620 fund we will not touch for anything until we bring it to the board and let you know what we're going to do for selections for contractors to re repair or either curban Gutter and I we've heard kbon gutter may be involved a little bit over territorial we're not quite sure how that's going to fles out yet we know there's going to be some some Street Firelane access over here to the Northeast if we get that

grant for the co housing project north of softball field and we know we've got at least 1.3 million already on a quote we're going to act on that or St slurry chip seal and and Chip sealing projects just to throughout the rest of the district for for Fire Light so there's a a quick look at cash and expenditures uh within budget and then these will be again unspent budget balances roll forward into the next year any questions so far I got a couple funds I'd like to highlight as well okay so I'd just like to highlight highlight a couple things here if you go to the page it's called Cash balances and it's about the sixth page in your document and there's three pages there page one two and three that ends in the lower

right corner 5.6 million 5.6 million that's page three you find that little I'd like to just highlight some of these funds that are brand new for me so so even though uh you know we've heard that the maintenance director and I trying to get some things done there's things that we have no clue we're we're so busy doing other things but thank goodness for us we've got superintendent Daniels here that just never stops looking for new money for the district so I'd like to just I'd just like to to highlight a few things here so if we go down to fund number 338 on page one you see some activity there and you see the uh expenditures there of the 32,000 expenditures page one yeah right right here 338 page one you see those expenditures

we had to uh the expenditures to that 32,000 that was a grant that again that we had for the district for nurse Workforce and Equipment that's been uh received and booked by the district that would not have happened to this event would not have happened to that 32,000 without this Grand find so thank you thank you we go down to 370 let's no more else on no other ones on the first page there let's just keep going down to the second page fun 475 this is your Grant we did get from Mountain Institute and we had to prefunding because this took a little bit of time we had to put money into the account we'll get that back into our own account and then we got money from Mountain Institute to pay for these things

so the 40 4169 692 you see um that was the expenses from that account and now we've got most of that back already from m Institute superintendent Mountain Institute is actually a school district you probably know that and they have several teachers from different areas they provide VOC programs County so that's that fund 477 next door of 148,000 you know I'm gonna have to think or 77 making me think uh about what that one is actually the 148,000 of cash and 89,000 I'm GNA have to get back to you now that's a brand new fund we've done nine new funds this year U 483 we know is school resource officer and 483 we've already spent the 111,000 and that's gone up just a little bit U and we've got that yet to recover so that

was you know we have four full-time school resource officers now two from this grant one contracted and one our own employee then we've got one in District and then we B one given to the district from localino meeting so four one to four so I'm amazing uh then we drop down to let's see 531 is the mentoring Grant 532 is a 30,000 you see the revenue came again from Mountain Institute way to way to go on that one 534 is the cougar Camp you see those expenditures 11,610 and fun 534 uh and then 537 look at 537 uh that's a fund you probably didn't even know about and that's a hungry kids grant that we did this year and we bring in food from a Mojave vendor in over in Kingman Cisco and we bring

in food and I can't even measure how many meals we've delivered to local kids over 100,000 over 100,000 weekend meals the district has been a great partner for the foundation um it's enabled the foundation to obtain product at a lower price because of the aspa Mojave contract and then the foundation um pays the bill when it comes to the district so it's been a great partnership but we've done over we did over 100,000 weekend meals last year I presume this is a new funding St because you show a zero balance right brand new this year brand new this year and 477 I just had to pick a second 477 is a high cost extremely high cost student fund from the state for special ed students that we we Outsource to a private provider in presc

so that's a high cost student fund one more to mention here is a 580 fund that's brand new this year and this is the revenue that my partner here right next door Miss wolf gets the the pleasure of collecting every month so that's our that's our teacherage fund and you see the $ 51,4 that we've put in there that's from monthly rental since we started renting maybe the first week in October yeah that and then there's no expense so that $181 expense was us basically paying some APS bills on all the units for a month or two and then one or two right now and then when people leave we have to pay their APS to make sure it stays in a not goes into aers so we have about 42 maybe 43,000 you see

the cash in there 49,679 th000 that we got when we borrowed $930,000 from a third party finance company we pay 138,000 year on debt service so that's not that's not Revenue neutral now but after 10 or 15 years or bringing in 40 or 50,000 rentals we'll we'll be able to really reduce the district burden for that 138,000 service and that was designed when we designed the various fees uh for the occupants of those units y we're keeping them we're keeping them steady and no plans to increase the monthly fees right so that's another good news funds think about one for a second any questions on funds or fund balance or no I'm okay put you on the spot next month though okay thank SP the whole month going to this just what she has the

nastiest question ask okay I believe Mr F has a question I'm really curious about that 100,000 me in the last year um that otherwise wouldn't have been there on the weekends and if there's any measure for any other impacts positive or otherwise on our kids and our burning going on in the district are there is there any way in which to see determined or have determined uh other positive effects so and I just want to stress that it's um it's a reimbursement account like it doesn't C like the district doesn't spend any District money on weekend meal bags that's all Chino Valley Education Foundation funded um so Lori Marley actually tracks attendance discipline grades attendance at Friday school um academic achievement of our homeless students and students who receive meal bags is not just our

homeless students but students in need who receive weekend meal bags um overall our students who receive weekend meal bags have better attendance fewer discipline infractions and made G greater academic gains this last year because we do um we have reports that we do for other granting agencies um based on the results of how the money was spent so today I an um for example dignity yrmc was a $10,000 partner to the foundation that helped sponsor the bags of hope that we did at Christmas time and so those were some of the stats that were provided today to yrmc it does have a positive effect on enrollment like continued attendance no 10day drops and academic achievement it was really impressive actually at Del Rio our weekend meal bag recipients um the students made more than double

the academic gains that the general education population made W respond with one thing to so you've probably heard of our or seen the posters for our summer feeding program for national school lunch and my understanding is that started about the 1 of June somewhere in there and we know people can show up at a window at a site there's two sites I high school and territorial grab and go at cbhs and congregate where you sit and eat at Delio so they they show up and that's only for the summer so we have quite a few people taking advantage of that but this program that we're talking about in fund yeah hold on now three or 537 goes year round it goes during the school year okay during the school year so they so we' kind

of got Bounties in throughout this and we run an emergency food pantry in June and August on the second Saturday of the month that is a result of our Chino Valley food neighbors program a program of the Education Foundation as well and that program has done six about 45,000 pounds of food out through the emergency food pantry over the last fiscal year and that's every other month so that but yeah okay so there were six time six times was open or five times six times six times the next one is the second Saturday in August anything thank you thank you Student Activity report though okay we can do that keep you on track so so these uh these Student Activity funds uh are raised by students with approved applications and we know that the middle

school did some of these back in March got five or six approved and we see that the middle school has really the only expense the month of June here that's $ 6581943 camp or one of these campway I think campway and then I always get involved because it's an off-campus event and our insurance company issues a Certificate of Insurance as if it was happening or was taking place on campus and it's it's something that's kind of cool to talk about because they always ask me will there be a climbing wall above nine feet will any part of the student's body be above nine feet and uh I always say no and and I hope that I'm always right so liability goes that high too yeah so so that's there we go that's so that's the

only real expensive fantastic thank you item 88 through J is tonight's consent agenda um seeing nothing being removed from that I entertain a motion to approve tonight's consent agenda and I'll second and all in favor I thank you item 9A tonight's Personnel report Miss wolf Miss Daniels um you should have received a supplement to the personal report um and on our personal report we have one new certified staff member two new classified two resignations two declined offers two certified changes six classified changes 12 coaches is 39 extra duties and 159 time sheets can you tell me on the supplement number nine what the hard to Bill position was um was in um um a special ed at one of our sites at at Delo sorry special at Delo and Justin talked about the summer curriculum

work if you look at those time sheets the 159 the majority of them were for some very specific kinds of work on curriculum pacing guides assessments and things like that this summer and we used Esser the some of our remaining sr3 funds to pay those time sheets which I think came in just for curriculum work a little over $60,000 so we were using some of the last of that grant money to improve instruction going forward yeah for sure a mass so miss wol yes can you report on why people who were offering a job turned turned us down they were um par professional positions and that the position that they had um um initially told them that they were leaving offered them more money oh so they decided to stay there right any other comments

or questions then with that if we could have a motion to approve tonight's Personnel report and supplement i v we approve tonight's Personnel report who the all in favor I thank you of course item 10A now let's talk about and approve the $350,000 adjacent points ly so to to put it in perspective if you're a homeowner in the district I just went back to these numbers um and for the years that there was a $100,000 Levy that we were bringing in um if you had a $100,000 property let's say your Levy would have been about $49 this current year just ended the levy went up to 93 it went to 9330 for that $100,000 now if you're going to adopt this tonight and the levy goes from 250,000 to 350,000 that $100,000 that assess value

home would jump to $127 for every 100,000 assessed value so if you got a half a million assessed home 127 * 5 about 640 if your home's assessed 250 it's about $283 per year so that's that's and that's going to bring in that 350,000 that we add to the 278,000 we ended last year with which gives us about 630,000 next summer we know we have to have contractors here on site hopefully like May 31st because they'll probably have two or three weeks for the work to do and hopefully by then we'll have funds approved for the housing project e so they can just do everything at once and get I don't know 15 20% of the work done here but hopefully all the work done there while they're here any additional questions all right then

seeing none this is an action item we can have a motion I move to approve the $350,000 adjacent ways Levy second all in favor I I item 10B is the approval of the 2425 District expenditure budget all questions were answered last time anything else from Mr Livingston right seeing none sorry to burst your pule seeing none um well entertain a motion to go ahead and approve I will move to approve the fiscal year 2425 adopted budget for factors provided by a school Finance unit Factor base level and student average daily membership counts will result in further revisions to be required second all in favor I I item 11a cvhs student handbook update Miss hello um so you should have received several pages from our handbook um that had some highlighted portions so I'll just kind

of Hit the highlight the highlights the highlights of the highlights uh we clarified and and earlier last or at the end of last school year we talked a little bit about our concurrent enrollment process and we refined the enrollment process um because we were not being financially responsible we didn't realize we didn't know what we didn't know um but holding kids accountable for college so if you get a DFW or Y for a YC class um we are charged for that and so well we autom atically help students who are in in any of the dual enrollment programs uh that Yi has but we do lose money if a kid fails or doesn't receive a a c or better so we clarify the process we have an enrollment form now our requiring parents to be

a part of the process and we've talked with YC so we've clarified that for attendance we are just trying to educate our parents a little bit more on the importance of attending school I think we all know that but at the high school level we do get deemed a little bit more because every period counts against us so a kid who misses 10 or more days or sorry 11 or more days is deemed chronically absent and that can happen six times a day so every class matters and so we just wanted our families to understand that but also clarify what an excused absence is versus an exempt absence code so a field trip um or a medical coding is exempt like it's neutral a lot of our families would call and say hey my kid

is sick and that's okay um but we we need to start coding those as excused and after a certain amount of excused absences a student is at risk of losing credit so their seat time that's a requirement if students are not present they cannot meet the minimum seat requirement and they're at risk of being denied credit and so we want to educate them try to get the information out way ahead of time and help them understand uh what that really means a loss of credit we had a couple students last year where we literally had to go back to their transcripts because they did not meet the requirement not many but a couple and they ended up with FS because they didn't meet the they had like 36 26 36 absences so unfortunately U there

were a couple of students who separate the ramification so we don't want that we're trying to get the word out for discipline uh all we did was just restructure all of we reframed it a little bit categorized it into uh minor major and Urgent this aligns with a multi multi-tiered systems of support approach which is a we call mtss framework and there's supports for academics and their supports for behavior and they're tiered um and so tier three behaviors are considered urgent tier 2 behaviors are considered major tier one are minor um and then we provided a menu of possible consequences that could happen depending on the number of infractions or um sometimes a student has an infraction in August and then they don't have anything until April and so we wanted to provide a little

bit more wiggle room to keep students in class because our job is to educate them but also to make sure that we provide a safe and secure learning environment um so we've expanded the options for long-term suspension it's no longer just a oneandone um and also we're trying to educate our parents on what long-term suspension actually means because a lot of times at the discipline hearing they didn't understand that their child is going to be withdrawn and now it was and it it was up to them to find some kind of educational option typically online um but we want to try and keep them at school so if they have uh one of those major infractions they're allowed to stay but they'll receive a 10day suspension we give them another chance on the second infraction

it will move to long-term suspension so we're we're trying to keep more kids on campus but also discipline and then on our diploma criteria that I presented earlier in the school year we actually want to exclude the require reement of students participating in a PSAT assessment it's not a required test um and I don't think that it needs to be a requirement to receive that particular diploma so I was wanting to exclude that requirement and finally we'll make Spanish translations available to our any questions yes please please go for it okay um actually very well written I I thought it was tremendous change from what we've had in the past but I have two comments first on page 31 second on page 32 page 31 and this is going to sound strange coming for an

old engineer I have a gramar gamical suggestion okay on the line that says depending on the reason for long-term suspension the following stipulation may be applied to students and I suggest add the word when returning to Chino okay would have thought okay no because it's true they will be eligible to return so just just clarification now the next page uh and that goes to the uh minor behavior incidents prohibited items on on campuses uh first I don't see any mention of cigarettes or ecigarettes prohibited on campus are they all per no no no um they are it is in our it is considered it's not minor that one is a major so major would be like tobacco so any tobacco related electronic cigarettes both well tobacco and ecigarettes okay it wasn't mentioned in this list

of of minor so you're saying those are major offenses page 33 page ilicit illegal yeah it's considered a controlled substance position good okay now why can't you have a cell phone with you you're allowed to have it absolutely you're just not allowed to be using it in the middle of class it doesn't say that it says prohibited items on campus so shouldn't it say use of cell phone that be a minor offense um I we could change the verbage it's be but during the class so we have posters and we talk about that on the first day of school during our handbook assembly what using those devices mean because it could be confiscated it could be considered a prohibited device or a prohibited item Just Like a Knife you don't have to have it you

don't have to use a knife but if you have a knife on campus it's prohibited yeah I I guess I'm still confused um because it says prohibit it's under the term prohibited items on campus including but not too so it reads it says a cell phone is a prohibited item I agree so you would want clarification just say use of cell phone or something okay no I see lots of phone calls without right now say asking why their child can't have a cell phone in their back no I get it okay we can clarify that yes and I think to that point so the state of California has banned all cell phones on school campuses and we districts in Arizona have be have begun Banning them as well Apache Junction banned them at their last

board meeting and so it could I so because of that it could create some confusion since our neighboring states ban them across the whole board and then districts in Arizona are moving that direction too sooner or later we know we're gonna have to deal with it but not today okay well if it's okay just add you so there and I think it my standpoint it be clarified got it like anything Mr all right this is an action item if we can have a motion to approve um the VHS to the handbook upate so moved with with the U yes suggestions the grammar and then the clarification and I will be happy second well in I of course please remain um item nine or I'm sorry 11b is our 2425 calendar change for cbhs so we

are proposing to just move to two semester exam days um in May that's what we had but for some reason in December it was a thre semester exam schedule so Wednesday Thursday Friday it was a 1 second third fourth fifth and sixth um lots of folks prefer the three-day uh with timing and the amount of time that kids have in class and just idle and then also with the 10 to 15 minute break um idle time where it's not lunchtime but kids are everywhere on campus for this 15 minute nutritional break it was a bit unnerving um so the the times that we start and the times that we release will not change they are actually the same exact time um 8:25 to 12:40 and that includes lunch um kids who don't have lunch are

able to leave if they have a vehicle but um we would just like to be consistent and only move to one exam schedule again an action item I would move to approve the 2425 calendar changes listed I have a second all in favor I thank you item 11c transition to [Music] traditional well I would I am requesting today the board to approve transition back to traditional grading I sent out a survey out I think you can see survey results survey out to parents students and teachers 78% prefer traditional grading that went out in the spring um 66 responders indicated traditional grading had more significant impact on their child's education and their academic progress um I can just see from the past year it wasn't working so I appreciate what you shared today thank you for

that I appreciate that um so I just my proposal I can go a little deeper if you want any questions I like Jamie's kin's new best friend questions comments okay on agenda item number 11 C I move that we approve the transition to traditional grading at H second all in favor I thank you go home and tell your daughter yay and we did vote to we tried to see if we could vote multiple times but only only let us one time all right item 12 a uh cbhs Athletics and Charter Schools you're not Mr D no but if it's okay I'll just read exactly what he put on okay okay and these are two annuals we present I'm new so I just learned that we present these to you guys each year so a student

who is enrolled in an Arizona and I also want our communities to know this a student who is enrolled in an Arizona online charter school and who is domiciled within the attendance zone of a member School may be allowed to try out for the inter Scholastic Athletics and activities on behalf of the member school if permitted by the member School governing board on an annual basis prior to the school year the member School governing board shall deter determined by formal board action whether it will permit online charter school students to trial for in Scholastic Athletics and activities and said board determination will remain an effect for that school year Athletics at China Valley High School is an extension of the curriculum and culture the high school administration strongly believes that our student athletes need to

be part of the school population and our goal to develop leadership skills student athletes participate in classroom and school activities and it is vital to building these relationships with students and staff the China Valley High School administration athletic department and coaching staff is focused on building a culture of respect accountability perseverance through daily engagement within the school setting examples of cultivating these strong characteristics include daily attendance reports monitoring of grades and everyday communication to staff the high school administration is also concerned that online Charter Charter School student participation in athletics and activities will drain resources from the school district the China Valley High School administration recommends that we do not allow online charter school students to participate in athletics and activities at the high school the only online students who will be allowed to participate

in cbhs athletics will be students who are involved in the Chino Valley Unified School District online program I will be the first to say that I have always supported this I am a firm believer that to be part of a team you have to actually be part of the team and that goes for the entire day questions no all righty I'll move to approve the uh CB USD that that CVUSD will not allow online on C cbhs students to participate in athletics second all in favor I thank you uh the next is about homeschooling and Athletics similar but I'm going to read it because I again I want everybody to just understand what we're talking about also Mr say sens his we sorry could or to have a family emergency okay a homeschooled student is

a student that is being taught by his parents or legal Guardians the curriculum that is being used for education has been approved by the superintendent's office of Education in yabai County a student who is enrolled in a home school setting that has met the requirements of the superintendent's office and can provide a certificate as evidence should be allowed to participate in sports at cbhs sports give students the opportunity to grow and build relationships which will better prepare them life Athletics at chin Valley High School is an extension of the curriculum of culture the high school uh the high school administration strongly believes that our student athletes need to be part of the school population and our goal to develop leadership skills student athlete participation in classroom and school activities is vital to building these strong

relationships with students and staff the Chino Valley High School administration athletic department and coaching staff has focused on building their culture of respect accountability and perseverance through daily engagement within the school setting examples of cultivating these strong characteristics include daily attendance reports monitoring grades and everyday Communications with staff the China Valley High School administration recommends that we do allow homeschooled students to participate in atletics and activities at the high school I want to distinguish carefully between the difference between the two yes so online Charter High School students that Charter School receives funding for those students a homeschool Arizona statute says that students to our homeschooled which that means they're not enrolled in an online program or with a formal school that receives State funding State Statute says that we have to allow H school students

to participate so not only in athletics but in extracurricular co-curricular we have homeschool students who come for band we have homeschool students who come for our CTE programs we have homeschool students who participate in athletics what we've learned losses were compelled to do that when they're not attending another school that receives funding from the state of Arizona something um interesting about that is over time we've had several families who children have started to participate in athletics whether it's at the middle school or band or other things who by the time they're in high school their students might start taking one or two classes on campus a day a lot of those kids end up enrolling full-time with us because exactly what um Justine read they become part of the culture they want to be part

of the they're part of the team they get to know the kids they get to know the staff and they want to participate fully in what we do kids who are attending online school spend all their time with the online school that school is getting funding for them homeschool students the law says we have to allow them to participate so just to offer that distinction since Arizona has lots and lots of schooling options and the one thing in here is that they have to have registered with the county school office office as a homeschooler in order for and we have to take that affidavit so the this confuses me a bit um why are we join the get on the bandwagon yeah so why are we making a decision or what why do we have

to approve this we affirm it every year we just affirm it and isn't it not true that homeschooled students are likely to be receiving State funds now yeah depends depends on the homeschool students so if a family is receiving an empowerment scholarship account for their student they lose the empowerment scholarship account if they enroll them in a public school for any portion of the day including extracurricular activities that one is the the county Esa does not recognize them as homeschooled they recognize them as empowerment scholarship recipients and they don't receive the affidavit they're not legally homeschooled anymore what you're saying County school office made the distinction yes so this not apply I got it so they would be able to receive I got it correct and um we had a situation with um Ms last

year where a student had home school prior they were not um Esa recipients their student came to school one hour a day to be a partner with Unified Sports and wanted their child to continue to do that the minute we added them on the roster they were notified that they lost their empowerment scholarship and school said hey do you still want to do this and they said it's more important for us to have the kid involved with unified than it is to receive the money we didn't take it in a p we'll do without it because we want our kid to have this experience yes it's um Arizona has certainly might the waters I think the distinctions were made C though way affidavit is the is the key so we'll take you but you got

to have the affidavit okay thanks uh so okay your turn okay someone's turn well my rather last a read this one Ona item 11b I move that we approve to allow students that are homeschooled to participate in athletics at CH Valley High School second all in favor I I item 13A first reading of revised policies DB annual budget it actually is our second reading but we're bring it back to be the first Tre correct yeah last month we looked at a preserving a 4% carry forward um in the m&o budget what we found was that we needed to clarify the language of the um policy revision that we were bringing to the board and that we needed to make sure it was on the right part of the policy manual last month was probably a

little bit of a rush job and so we've clarified it it spells it out nicely um it's in the right card of policy manual so here it is as first reading and it's a whole lot longer and more detailed but it fits the bill a little bit better right well with it being a first reading there is no action to take on that um items 13B is second reading of our technology resources and instruction policy number J J in D do we have any questions about that I know last month um I think Peter asked the question about Ai and what that looked like in the classroom and one of the revisions of course you know is just to keep up with the times because the language for tapes CDs and floppy discs was removed

the language for AI was inserted um and then I just wanted to point something out the Forest Fe Management Association of which this board and District participate has set aside a substantial amount of money for professional development for schools as it relates to the unfolding world of AI wow so I just because since the questions came up about that good parts bad parts right um you know we've screwed around with it a little bit at home hey you know create a form for blah blah blah and it's amazing how much simpler life is um when you can just tell the computer to do something this C this makes a lot more sense but know G to be a question anywhere do we Define artificial intelligence no because well it's like a little defined in here

but truthfully it's such an unfolding that's my problem I my wife and I have these long discussions at home even about you know what is it that we're going to be subject to and you know what is it not and that was the only real thing know the language is fine but I'm just curious to know as anybody you find anywhere really what we mean when we say artificial intelligence no I had to ask a question I bet that's all I needed to do no thank you any questions I'm gonna attempt to bring you an answer next month would you I would appreciate it well and I would I would tell you that so we so Joe who goes by the nickname Deco do you want to give us a wave back there um Joe

is our new um streamer and Technology Guru in the back room he works for Yavapai County in their its and um Joe streams Board of Supervisors meetings planning and zoning and all that stuff I told him he would find this far more riveting um but I I would say that the county is scrapping with the same thing with AI all over the board and and every government entity every employer everybody we're all struggling with what does this mean and what does it look like if you don't get into Zoom meetings The Washington Post has a wonderful series of Zoom meetings on all sorts of topics which are free you just you'll answer it and then all of a sudden you can watch these and they've had several on artificial intelligence recently and I'm still more

confused that's why I had to ask the question tonight because they're not answering it either what is the breadth and depth of what we mean when we say artificial intelligence I had to ask I'm sorry that's okay I plead ignorance okay well this is an action item so someone would like to make a motion to I guess I to I think you are okay I will on agenda item number 13B I approve the second reading of policy I JN DB use of Technology resources in instruction so all in favor I good night ladies and gentlemen see you next month this is the this is
