001welcome public we appreciate you being here if you'll stand with me let's have the pledge of allegiance i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all thank you for those in our television audience we do have a quorum tonight uh mr artona myself and we have miss martinson on the telephone just to let you know so with that item number four is adoption of our agenda if i could have a motion to adopt tonight's success and a second i think all in favor thank you item five is call to the public i do not have any notes on my desk uh would anyone in the audience like to speak this evening with that

002we'll just keep on moving on item number six is our public hearing we do need on our proposed budget we do need a motion to open the public hearing madam president and do i have a second i came here all in favor all right and so moved mr livingston all right so we do have six items i would like to discuss really briefly and then i've got a support document list here maybe half an inch there if you have a really good question that pushes me back into the data i can just dig that right up from here so the six items i'd like to discuss is are as follows number one the year ended this june 30th the student count was reduced due to a distance learning percentage reduction that count ended up being

0032057 students and next year that distance learning percentage is going away and we've estimated after i've talked with several folks especially and it was right here 2150 so an increase of about 90 with no reduction so if you factor the distance for the difference just for the reduction we're looking at at least about 35 to 40 students that were maybe not here this year just like sixth grade going to seventh grade first grade going to secondary 40 to 50 students and then we don't lose the reduction so this week so that's where we come up with about 90 more students 2060 basically to 21.50 so the capital funds that the district generated have always been reduced they're called district additional assistance this year they're reduced around 111 000 that reduction has gone away so that

004means our capital budget went from new revenues of around 910 000 to this next coming year a million ten so they went up around 100 so that's really good we go to page one we see the difference there i can keep you from going to pages here so the reduction in capital including the doing a way of the distance learning increased their operating budget by just over a million dollars that's again an estimate from our ending approved budget for this year and in our operating budget to next year 14 and a half million this year 15 and a half million next year if everything comes out always wanted so and we do have one more one more bit of news part six the classroom site fund has been collapsed from three different groups of funds

005for students for teachers and teacher performance and different factors it's been collapsed to one fund which will be easier for principals to manage performance and compliance and contractual terms and the funding for people for that went up from 425 dollars per student this year to 733 next year so the revenue this year was 1 million 150 000 next year it's projected to be 1 million 820 000 so about a 35 increase that goes straight through to certified teachers that are teaching again approved curriculum with a sort of certification from the department of ed those are the main things capital went up slightly our operating budget one half a million dollars based on the factors that we have at this point and correct me if i'm wrong john just as a clarification two days um classroom

006site fund also called prop 301 so we prop 301 actually doesn't even exist anymore so we want to kind of get away from that term and go to the actual term which is classroom cycle so they are synonymous but we want to kind of get away from the proper one that increase the prop 301 is a one year only increase by correct so they don't it's probably going to go down next year and so um cindy and john and i have talked about some strategies to kind of level that out so that we don't get this bolus of money and then all of a sudden salaries go down the next year so we want to we want to do that and then also and i'll talk a little bit about this in my update we

007have no state budget this is the best estimate that we have from the depart actually the auditor general's office so we guarantee numbers are gonna change we i i i would bet my life on it that we're gonna have a different budget comet latest december we may decide to do something earlier but um you'll know more once that budget is approved thank you um peter annie do either of you have any questions not here i don't have any questions okay thank you we do need a motion to close our public hearing and a second all in favor all right hi fantastic public hearing closed um item seven eight is our superintendent's report mr shaw okay you have uh my report on your desk um a few items sr3 i gave you an update last board

008meeting and we did not have an amount allocated yet we learned this a couple weeks ago and we have just over three and a half million dollars is the district's allocation for esther 3. um according to the um federal law that that was part of the created essay three twenty percent of that or seven hundred thousand dollars give or take has to go towards learning loss and for at least the thing that we're doing now summer school is budgeted to come out of sr3 and so that's that's part of that it could be um hiring uh we've talked about hiring interventionists so extra teachers to kind of target kids that may be falling behind there was a pass program that was done at the high school to target those high school kids high school seniors

009to make sure that they graduate that kind of stuff so we have plans in place but it's cindy is trying to trudge through the mud of the instructions and guidance on what we have to do and so we are uh working on evaluating how things should be spent along with um the grant requirements and it's not it's about as clear as money it is uh difficult to to get that across so she's doing a fantastic job but we we have some preliminary numbers and we want to kind of figure out exactly what we need to do before we get those out uh could i ask any questions please uh cindy we know about the summer school this year uh are there other interventions that we're going to need to do with that particular high school

010uh and that's why the yesterday sort of brought that question to mind uh of some of the deficiencies that not just you know the upper grades in high school but across the curriculum in high school that we found from last last year's disruption the i would tell you that we're addressing a lot of them during summer school and i have uh i'll talk more about summer school a little bit later in the agenda but for example we have more than double the amount of kids attending summer school at the high school this year than we typically have so they're feeling like as far as credit efficiency goes that they're really on track and their kids crop from multiple grade levels attending all the way down to ninth grade so that's going to help substantially as

011far as skills we had our high school teachers worked pretty hard on some of those basic skill stuff with kids even in the distance learning scenario so the only kids that we think will like may need some extra attention to that end are students who may have taken the year off so we can't say exactly what is that right now we finally were able to get to a report that department of ed reference was available about our kids who are i guess i'll say this theoretically eight wall um you know we've heard those tens of thousands of numbers from across the state this year and we had 137 on that list that withdrew from us either we withdrew for a 10-day drop or withdrew for us and went and never were picked up officially by

012some other district in arizona so the high school's already been working on ferreting those kids out to see were they dropouts do they just take a year off did they are they homeschooling and didn't register with the county or you know things like that so we're in the process of trying to work that out because it's the only way the kids who we have we know where they were feel pretty good about how we ended the year skill wise credits wise that kind of thing it's the unknown those just sort of vaporized kids that we won't know until they show up well and i can understand the kids that sort of disappeared from them from the system i had certainly trying to get them back in and everything i was more curious about you and

013i had an earlier discussion about the failures of distance learning you know it just did not work and i just wanted you know since we have this this money if there's any things that you have thought of for the kids that are back in particular right now focusing on high school level to supplant or supplement uh some of the instructional programs that we have or extra activities that we have to try to address the deficiencies that came out of the distance learning so they feel like they've done a pretty good job because we've been back in session for so long we had tutoring virtual tutoring during the periods where we were out but we had several teachers at the high school who offered before after school and sometimes friday school tutoring as john mentioned we

014had the pass program to bring the kids in and since we finished all of fourth quarter and part of third quarter in person they feel like they were able to do a lot of remediation since they had the kids in at the end of the year between that and what we're doing in summer school heidi was telling me the other day she we have kids doing um 87 full credits during summer school which is a lot yeah so where you're thinking is that basically continuing on with the supplemental assistance that we started this spring through the fall and we'll still have tutoring available we always have tutoring available we'll still have tutoring available um for kids as well and opportunities for credit recovery too beyond the normal in the normal classroom plus online options that

015we offer at the high school so our goal is to make sure the kids are graduating graduating on time and even with the current year we have a few seniors who are finishing up during summer school even though this was a small senior class believe it or not our dropout rate once these kids finish up this summer that's going to improve that number of kids who may not have graduated exactly in may our dropout rate is still less than half what the states is [Music] even with a little bit of bumpiness you know so another indication that i wanted to share that we learned about on tuesday is that our our current kinder class is right now and we're still very early about the same number as our incoming first grade class so and we

016still have a month and a half of enrollment time so that's good that means people i think people are coming back and we're also seeing some of those um kids that should have been kinders coming into first grade and we have a plan um to address those those needs as well and is it pre-emergent first or what's the name that we're using um transition first yeah so they're age-appropriate for first grade we can put them in transitional first hopefully they're uh able to kind of keep up as first graders if not that we have plans for them as well to kind of keep them caught up they're keeping me in the first grade though yeah so in essence some of them will have skipped kindergarten right because they just didn't enroll in kindergarten as john

017mentioned kenner and kinder enrollment itself is at 136 but that kids that um are being identified for transitional first we have that number in place looks like we're going to fill two sections of that so it's like john livingston was saying we felt confident bumping that number up a little bit from where we ended the year for budgeting processes because of that yeah into looking positive on the wrong side super legislative update if you've been following along they actually um tried the house tried to pass a budget and could not um they are then they researched i think until maybe tomorrow through tomorrow so um i don't have a whole lot to report and they have to do something by um june 30 otherwise we're all on vacation july 1st because we're we can't pay

018the bills so um anyway um not much on the legislative update um there is in your packet there are some parent surveys that we do as part of the process for the paid to the pay for performance on the classroom site fund they i was very pleased with the results even though in some cases in all cases i think they went down a little bit on the uh and shifted to the left a little bit lower ratings but with the year we had i'm pretty happy with how the results turned out um considering that you know people that are unhappy tend to be the the most the ones that participate the most in the surveys and for the most part you know people still seem satisfied with what's going on in the district and part

019of that is how i think we finished really strong so end of year update we were all at graduation fantastic graduation i think the one of the best of in-person national anthems i've ever heard in my life you know they did they did a fantastic job uh i wanted so i want to give the high school kudos for that i was able to attend most of the end of year celebrations at the schools um just the the vibe the the atmosphere was very positive parents enjoyed seeing their kids at school at school function and so that was really neat we also held our end-of-year celebration for staff we had five uh 27 staff members get their five year 10 16 get their 10 12 get their 15 20 get their eight um apples we have

020eight get their 20 year apple sorry four get their 25 year special awards two including one here get their uh 30 year special awards and then we had six staff retirees and a little bit about the special awards this came out of the superintendent employee advisory committee something a little bit different than just a pin for the 25 and 30. there was a our ag department used their laser cutter to design i don't know what you'd call it it's not a plaque but a a decoration that was specific to the employee so i think yours had palm trees that's what yeah struck me because i started to see those everyone was different and i'm sure that they were relevant you know to that particular individual yeah but the artwork on those work was stunning yeah

021i don't know if those were designed here or these are pre-packaged programs that they are able no i think well i think they can input the like the digital um file but it was all cut here yeah so so our laser cutters did those yeah so and karen's was colorful yeah some of them were just the metals but karen's was painted and everything she grabbed it so quickly you had to sort of look that's not the security you held the wrong side karen as you're heading about that well these people over here were happy yeah but uh mike and i were on the wrong side we just saw you sitting away with it well that was a great idea yeah so and that again came from our stats some of our staff members who thought

022you know just a different way to honor those 25 and 30-year employees all right and the last thing staffing as of this morning we believe that all of our teacher positions are filled at territorial del rio and heritage we still have two teaching positions at the high school one i think we had nine applicants or something for social studies so we are pretty confident we'll be able to fill social studies um struggling a little for our current technical education teacher to replace uh mr foster our drafting teacher we do have a plan to kind of get those first-year kids their certificate we hired a part-time teacher to teach so they get their second year of drafting done so we and that's actually i think a request that you'll approve later uh no that's welding we'll

023prove that late yeah that's building but um so we have a plan for that but we have i think four or five different openings for a cte teacher and we take any one of those we're trying to kind of um see if we can just find somebody that has may have some experience that can help us in that position so we have three counseling positions open that's proving to be a little bit difficult um one of those is the high school counselor we have our special ed counselor for our special ed kios and then we have our grant funded position and territorial that we're trying to fill and then we do have various paraprofessional and other classified positions right now so someone's looking for a job we can pretty much put you in somewhere and

024that's it for my report unless there's any questions any questions wonderful moving on item 7v1 financially thank you thank you so hopefully you got the email i sent yesterday i believe and this has been something i've been just kind of watching closely the last few months since i've been here and there's a timing issue so i did these reports last friday thinking i was in good shape and then when i got here monday june 7th the countdown reported about 900 000 more revenue and dated it back to may 31st on june 7. so when i saw that i just quickly redid the reports and there's two numbers that i circled the front page and i had that discussion with mr opponent today these encumbrances are definitely going to go away really soon we just got

025some hesitant folks that don't want to reduce the coverage right away so that's going to drop off way below a million right away but we're just a little hesitant to close them as quickly as i thought we would so first page you can you can see where we're at with our budgets with capital emino and adjacent ways we will bring in another 100 000 at least in fund 620 next year for adjacent ways we have a 4.55 levy that will be coming to you for approval and when we adopt the budget any questions on that first page just the encompasses are not really positive but they're going to go right second page then you can follow from july to june and that one million three twenty eight thousand in the upper right corner second and

026then that if you go to the very back page is exactly what we have in our vision software at the end of all funds and that's always my goal to the cash that we have at the bank push it into this report so you see it and there's other things that happen to these accounts rather than just revenue and expense sometimes we do journal entries to fill another account so now they're balanced to the penny and that was about 900 000 short when they got here one day but again that's where we were on the 31st of may so you got real numbers then and you got real numbers now so it's just all the numbers ledger at this point uh any questions then on where we're at with the cash balances or balances i

027do not do you peter john and i already had our phone conversation annie do you have any questions okay thank you okay great thank you all right thank you so much i want to put it on the record uh people know me from from before that i usually call imagine how old you have questions john's been wonderful to work with we would spend half hours this morning on this phone and you know his ability to communicate in his knowledge and answering all my devious questions is very very very appreciated i just want to get that out absolutely thank you you will probably put one out there and i'll have to really do some research but that's that's great well it's going to be a challenge every month john i'm trying to come up with a

028better question every every month there was a biggie he answered this morning that was a delightful six million dollar question yeah i guess i didn't mention that because we already covered it i took my senior thing okay all right then how about item 7b2 our student activity fund report and you should have that in front of you so you do have that in front of you 123 i think that's the lower left corner so that doesn't show a tremendous amount of activity this year uh i can ask mr greater since he's here student council at the high school had 9 000 resident 9 000 expenses started with 33 000 ended with 32 000 a chunk of that probably was yearbook revenues is that right um probably not i do not believe yearbook goes towards student

029council correct revenues are going to come from dances with them this year besides that um i don't think they even did any other types of fundraisers this high school did okay so thank you yeah so when i went over that with miss miss gray earlier uh i made a distinction after what you said and what she said this money is really not even tracked in our financial software this is all local bank account money with the schools and 123 000 is a little less that we have had in the past we've had over 150 000 a year in so it doesn't reflect a lot of revenue i guess is the main thing but yeah the year was i'm not surprised but it is all held in our local bank national bank of arizona and every

030every school has their own funds i understand that it's not even considered district money we're just a fiduciary of this student money yeah so any any questions there i don't think so uh annie any questions no that's fine do it all right thank you okay all right okay okay item eight is approval of consent agenda if we can have a motion to approve it please and a second i'm going to presume thank you all in favor aye thank you all right um let's go on to 9a which is our personnel report we do have a supplement so please refer to that as well the there are two moves certified this is between the regular report and the supplement seven new classified five new classified substitutes 21 resignations which is normal at this time of year

031nothing a lot of those are ours classified substitutes that we call and ask if you want to come back next year they say no and we they resign and they get paid their lead and that kind of stuff um actually they don't get paid their leave we take them they leave off the books uh one retirement one certified change 12 classified changes nine extra duties in one time sheet all right does anyone have any questions regarding the personnel report with that i'll entertain a motion to accept tonight's personnel report with supplement and you do it first this time fantastic second and all in favor aye thank you moving right along to item um 9b which is our superintendent's contract as you recall we did discuss this in executive session last month i believe we clarified

032everything that needed to be clarified however are there any additional questions that can be answered or would either of you like to pull this into executive session this evening not here great then can i have a motion please to accept or to approve school year's 20 21 20 21 to 22 22 to 23 23 to 24 mr schultz contract so move second all in favor all right thank you item 9c new welding teacher position at cvhs actually i'll have mr president i'd be happy to report well um this year for um cte we had a whole big batch of registration events going on so we had a lot of fun with that um publicly on the record i think edie holbert and riley davidson they work their tails off to make sure they chase down

033tons kids to finish registrations get kids loaded up into the system so first off uh thank you to them um but this position here that we're talking about tonight is for a welding instructor so currently um we have welding in the morning time it's basically a zero hour um starts uh about seven o'clock and it goes through the first period of the day and that instructor he is paid 100 by yelp by college um and we run our kids through that programming there well this year at the conclusion of all the registration and the students picking classes for next year we had an increase of i said about 100 but we usually get about 12 to 16 um requests this year we had 36 requests on there so that doesn't include um the students who

034are in year one rolling into year two it's only five kids but um so total potential of 40 41 kids in those classes there um so with that we wanted to add in a second time frame for that teacher now again zero hour first period he's played paid by yet by college and according to his contract that what john morgan has shared with me is that they can't fit any more clock hours for him underneath their pay scales and the contracts they have for their employees so um but aaron is available during that morning time excuse me the welding instructor that we're considering um and so with that he's available and would like to pose post a position up there to get a welding instructor there two periods of the day for us so it's

035a two hour block um so and with the 40-ish kids we'll be able to uh yield enough money to be able to pay for that teacher through adm and other certifications that will come and uh so that's the request as to why we want to have the welding teacher be two periods of the day more on our campus so you may or may not have the answer to this um this number of kids is obviously a little atypical any reason that you know yes so when i'm not gonna go into a long story about it but basically what happened was this there was mr holder in his agriculture one class they were working on welding classes are working on welding as part of their curriculum for agriculture for the year one kids freshman probably the

036two weeks three weeks prior to students going in and selecting the registrations and selecting the classes for the next year so unknowingly he was building a pipeline of interested kids the wealth and so um that's what happened there so that's what i believe at the same time uh welding's always been a pretty popular program and uh when we notified kids that we were going to be shifting the time frame and the start time typically it started at 6 45 7 o'clock well after looking at things with yelp by college we could really start that later on closer to 7 30 so it really opened up the door for a lot more younger kids to be able to attend so it's wonderful yeah any other questions one question is our is the welding program leading to

037a certification of any sort great question so um these classes definitely are earning certifications not only are they earning american welding society certifications they're also earning the you have a bike college structural welding certificate so it's yeah it's a college credential of sorts so you know a lot of the families they hear that my child is going to get college credits before they even leave high school and you know none of them have that or they're very excited that their child is earning a college credential which they don't have so excitement with that and kids um can often get maybe two or three welding certificates out of it that's wonderful thank you that's the beginning process they can come out after you know several years not several but multiple years at yet by college making

038a lot of money as a welder you know with those great certifications well that's what i think because that's the world today uh for non-college graduates you know you need these certifications everything i've read is you need that and that guarantees you better income than i probably heard in my lifetime so i'm glad to hear that that welding running program is leading to one of the certifications it is exciting just as a quick anecdotal note about cte we have two kids um if you're not aware baghdad minds they um every year they work with the amplified college and um they all open up not sure the exact word basically some paid internships for students to apply and those paid internships include uh i think 12 or 14 college credits you provide transportation from the prescott

039area to baghdad to get paid internship paid hands-on learning so they do that and this year i knew for a fact that we had uh three kids who did apply to get into an internship two of them went on to the they went through their initial interview and they moved on to their second interview which took place someplace right around the week of graduation or thereafter a young man and very happy to say a young lady as well so anyhow i i want to mention that the amount on the on the cover sheet actually you need to double that because this was initially for a one period teacher um a one-sixth teacher when um it was looked at it actually needs to be a one-third or two-period teacher so um if as part of the

040motion if you can include a um the 0.33 fpe welding teacher that would be i think um more specific as to what we're actually looking for well then we'll just move right on into emotion um i'm going to guess peter would you like to make a motion yeah let's do that okay i move that we approve the new welding teacher position at a .33 uh of a full-time position as presented on our agenda wonderful and a second again thank you all in favor all right thank you thank you item 10a 2122 proposed budget okay well to review i think we've got a couple things just to do in summary if the board sees some credibility and accurate numbers and extra data and a doctor approves this budget we bring it back to you july 12th

041for adoption for the year and then that's when we know a change not only in the form will come but we'll have to change the form based on some legislative factors but at this point we've got the change in the million 35 000 in our operating budget projected and we've got a slight increase in our capital budget as far as the allocation projected and the reduction reduced so those are the factors that we're bringing forward at this time and i would certainly do whatever i could assure you that every number that's in the budget has been researched and documented and i've had about 11 phone calls with ade staff some of them multiple times we do have some uncertainties results-based funding at rio school is coming from the governor's office and they promised us another

04298 000 this year that's always on a year by year basis we never have a lot of knowledge going forward and i will mention that we do have six million dollars budgeted for this repair and upgrade and maintenance of our buildings and we had a meeting today that uh indicated that that could very well take place in the 2122 year it's just more assurances and more validations and more infrastructural engineers we're looking at our buildings to make sure that's the way to go that was my six million dollar surprise okay so we do need them unless there's any other questions questions great then if we can have a motion to approve the 2122 expenditure budget that is i will so move as presented all in favor all right thank you item 10b a four-day instructional

043model okay the um state law has changed and the statute that allows the four day week is has been rescinded and a new statute has been has replaced it and so in order to maintain our four day week we need to show provide proof that we've done two hearings which i i dug through our minutes and found the hearings in march and april of 2009 a familiar name was on those hearing minute meeting minutes mr atona you were president of those uh hearings um and then in april of 2009 a four-day school week was approved for the next year which was 9 10. since then it's been in place so in order to maintain it and at this time of late in the game i would make no other recommendation and i wouldn't even if

044it was plenty of time uh the four day week is i think a advantage to our district in multiple ways and it's something that i would recommend keeping in order to do that we need a in this case it's a letter from the governing board reaffirming that we want to that we are going to continue with a four day week next year so that's all this is it's no change in a calendar nothing is anticipated changing next year all this is doing is is going through a hoop that was put out there by the legislature in order to maintain our four day school week and we obviously want to keep our four-day schooling and you know when mr tonois was there uh part of the ridiculous might even have been his request a requirement three

045years later we had to do a survey um and of both the community and of our staff and in both cases it was very interesting it was almost identical 80 percent of our community and 80 percent of our staff wanted to keep it versus 20 and if i remember correctly john we held a meeting with all staff and community invited in the gym and we had hundreds of people came to that meeting speaking pro and con it was very interesting dialogue because we were breaking ground at that time right one of the first districts in arizona weren't we that went in four days i i don't know about that but it's it's definitely the largest in the area and we still are the largest in the area that's on four day week um and so

046and i think in in the community um i believe in cindy you can correct if i'm wrong but the town is on a four day week yes and so it's really and and that was soon after i think we went to a 40 week i think the town and went to a four day week and so i think it's it's part of the community now um and kind of uh here to stay sure and i remember a lot of the discussion about the advantage of the four day week does it actually open up friday for athletic activities other extracurricular activities special events uh which i guess is to be exactly successful right and you know we talked about some of the financial uh positives at that time and one thing that we really didn't think

047about was the advantage it gives us in hiring we have people that will take less money um you know they are maybe down in the valley making more money or somewhere else they'll come here because of the uh it's a lifestyle choice they want they want that extra day you know to be honest a lot of our teachers end up working an extra day um outside of the instructional week just get you know instead of working on saturday work on friday and have two a two-day weekend sure and so it it is a strategic advantage in hiring as well all know what you're saying over the past 12 14 years it's been basically a full success i i would say so i i agree as a parent i would never go back to that but

048it's wonderful yeah i do want it on the cover sheet it says um i think it says for discussion and information this is a national item yes so with that action we're looking for a motion to authorize a board statement to continue using a four-day school week amy i sort of have a vested interest in this could you mind making the motion [Laughter] to continue supporting the four day week i actually think that's kind of awesome okay do we have a second did we get you back so i was reading the the minutes and peter is the one that made the initial motion back in 2009 so i actually think it was fitting that you did it well that's why i thought all right item um 11a is our summer school update okey dokey on

049the desk in front of you is a uh an update of summer school and it however i decided to print it it came out differently than normal just flips on the short end not belonging so a few things that i thought were pretty interesting to note we have 463 students in attendance when we had our initial sign ups and projections we had some parents at the middle school who signed their kids up as a threat we know that because they called a told us that and they signed their kids up as a threat that if you don't pass your classes you're going to summer school i already signed you up so then on the first day of summer school when they didn't show and the school called they said oh my kid passed their classes

050so they're not going to come so we had a few drop off because of that um we did have a child at territorial who was only signed up for morning and went home sobbing because everybody else got to stay but him that was his impression and so begged to stay all day so we had a few shifts from half day to all day because kids discovered while there's a ton of fun stuff going on i received an email from a parent of a student at territorial who is a great student but just begged to go to summer school wanted to go to summer school and so because we offer enrichment and not just remediation in summer school we do have quite a few kids who are coming for some extended learning and enrichment and she

051is having so much fun she her mother shared with her that she was excited to go back because the next day it or whatever the monday was going to be michelangelo monday and they were taping a piece of paper under their desk and they were going to lay on their backs on the floor and color the paper like michelangelo and this is team chatter which is really cute so in addition to the cute things and there's lots of that going on i wanted to say this which was also kind of funny the chino valley education foundation spent roughly five thousand dollars providing incentives for children to have perfect attendance at summer school and those incentives have ranged they range from everything from daily drawings for 10 food gift cards in the area so that's for

052every kid in summer school is eligible that day for that drawing for showing up that day at the end of each week there's a 25 value gift card for the middle school high school from amazon for kid who had perfect attendance for that week the del rio territorial have pool passes and zoo passes and movie passes and they're all family oriented and so they have those kind of drawings if the kids have been in perfect tenants for the week at the end of the 16 days that month of summer school we have bicycles we have airpods we have an ipad mini two laptops nintendo switches and games and all kinds of stuff to encourage the kids to be there every single day of summer school so that was something that the district can't do we

053can't use grant money to pay for incentives but the foundation said you know what let's spend 5 000 bucks and get those incentives in place so super cool um the summer school administrators told me when they were praying around all the prizes the first day the kids were really excited about it a high school kid told heidi wow you guys are going to great lengths to bribe us to be a summer cycle and then they have various snacks for each day that they can pass out just for fun snacks just kind of a spontaneous thing like an otter pop or a little bag of chips or you know something to just make it a fun experience and make it not feel punitive but fun to be at summer school so by all accounts so far

054it's going pretty smoothly we have transportation provided morning afternoon and midday because you will notice on your paper that at territorial we have 168 students in attendance that is about almost a third of their total enrollment is going to summer school at territorial which is fantastic and because we heard from that age parents of students that age during the year that they felt even though the teachers were doing a great job they really complimented the teachers when we were doing at-home learning they felt like maybe they didn't know enough to teach their kids basic reading skills or feeling help appropriately so we're really seeing that so we have 126 all day in addition to that we have 31 who are am only 11 who are pm only you can see the staffing count there they're

055doing pre and post tests for reading and math we have special ed resource teachers available these are all the kinds of lessons that they're doing skill builders math facts in science they're building volcanoes and they're doing food and nutrition unit they're building their own healthy lunchables they're seeing how many marbles they can put in a paper boat before it sinks they're building towers out of marshmallows that are joined together with crispy spaghetti noodles you know uncooked spaghetti noodles they are so they're getting a little civil engineering lesson in there peter their art is pint-sized picassos and pe is called little olympics and so they're having a lot of fun with that that's a territorial at del rio a lot of the one of the things they're doing are literature and author studies for that enrichment

056component they're also doing gardening and plant life cycles they're doing electricity and circuits which i thought was pretty interesting and i noticed yesterday i think that mit has discovered a new way to generate electricity so i wonder if they're going to learn about that they are doing textiles tie-dying in clay and they're playing the ukulele at del rio and learn how to spell that to write that in this report heritage we have 102 students which is astounding normally we have 20 about 20 in summer school from the middle school so we are having pre and post tests insights they're doing hands-on science projects and they're preparing for a mini science fair that they're going to have social studies is doing junior achievement of arizona's ja finance curriculum which is a fantastic curriculum in art they're

057concentrating on drying and painting they're also doing gardening and for pe we ordered quite a bit of specialty equipment for pe so they're doing things they don't normally do health and fitness wise that are geared toward lifetime health and fitness so that's kind of exciting thing the high school's probably the most boring sorry brian um kids are mostly a credit recovery we have yeah no pint-sized picassos of the high school we have 90 students enrolled 69 of the 90 are taking two classes each we have 18 that are doing their courses online 10 are doing one in person and one online at cvhs or at home we have a certified teacher who's proctoring those courses eight kids are online only they're doing that from home so they can work and do other things in attendance

058for our seniors who are trying to graduate and will graduate at the end of summer school we have 36 juniors which is fantastic because then we're not trying to help them scramble next year 41 sophomores the most sophomores we've ever had and heidi and i were talking about the nine freshmen and the 41 sophomores the effect that this has when a kid fails a course during the school year like fails english 9. they still go on to english 10 they're taking english nine at the same time english nine classes are crowded because there are students in there who have failed so when students are making up credits during the summer it helps level our class sizes during the school year as well so 90 kids taking classes means better leveling for class sizes during the

059school year they're doing english and math pre and post tests there are 80 they can earn 87 total credits toward graduation and these are the courses being offered in person english 9 10 11 and 12 eligible 1-2 geometry and financial algebra which is the senior level math biology and we have special ed resource online kids can do world history american history or foundations of science so they are definitely oriented at the high school toward things that kids need to graduate transportation had you know a few little hiccups here and there to start it off just because everybody's all on the same buses and we're trying to get kids dropped off and picked up and all that stuff food service is going extremely smoothly and um otherwise only only good stuff that's enough of a good

060stuff that's worth well kudos to all of you for me it's we have the summer school administrators at each campus with the exception of brandy who's assisting none of them are typical administrators some of them are people who think oh maybe i want to be an administrator one day i'm thinking they're all thinking no right now and we have um like at the high school mr metz and mr holder are splitting it up we have um leanne weller is the summer school administrator at heritage cassie krauser who are both instructional coaches cassie's doing it at del rio emily myrick who's an instructional coach she and brandi are sharing in a territorial so it's giving our staff who want to work that high rate higher rate of pay it's giving people administrative practice and experience and

061it's freeing up normally like brian heidi and marty would be overseeing summer school having other people overseeing it and at the middle school means the administrators can hopefully take a little time off or things like that as well so lots and lots and lots of wins in this and we've had people i've had people call me and say they can't believe that it's free that they're blown away by the fact that it's free for kids to attend which i think is really cool so that's where we are halfway into it all right look forward to hearing about it at the end of it anyone else have any comments or questions on it send you just a real quick question i know the high school has always offered it are the other other schools always offered

062a summer school program before this year yes and no um the middle school has their summer school has it's usually on the high school campus for transportation and food service and all different variety of things but um theirs has typically only been for students who are in danger of being retained in their current grade level so it was an opportunity for students to avoid retention for example at territorial and del rio almost every summer since i've been here we've had a summer program it's always been by invitation only for students who need that extra boost so um like one year we ran more than one year we ran a really robust program that was geared toward language partners for english language learners for example we've had students who are [Music] students who are homeless students

063students who are just need some extra help in order to be ready for the next grade level it's always been my invitation only so we've always had something just not and and we've had uh gifted programs during the summer too and we have fluctuated what we offer depending on what the need has been each year so and we instead of two bus runs which is what we normally have one that goes north and one that goes south we have nine bus runs plus one special needs plus this summer that's a thanks annie any questions or comments i just think it's so wonderful that people take advantage of this yeah yeah absolutely well this was just a discussion item so no action to be taken on that um our next item is an executive session so

064i do need a motion to go into executive sessions [Music] fantastic all in favor all right all right okay thank you all right why don't i call you back in just a few minutes um we have the videographers gonna we're gonna actually do the meeting in the in the boardroom the video officer is gonna bug out he's he knows about it we'll give everyone a chance leave it and i'll give you a chance to do something we'll call you back about five minutes thank you all you guys have a good night thanks brian
