001Mhm. >> Mhm. >> I let the minutes reflect that with the roll call that three of the five board members are able to be here tonight. Um, the man and Josh are not here tonight. Uh, letter B, we have public comments on agenda items. Are there any questions or comments on the agenda items for tonight? That's good. Uh, we do have an amendment to the agenda. We do. >> Um, please add under new business item 3D, approval of storage barn at the middle school high school for up to $170,000. We're getting three bids and um we've gotten at least one, so we know it's going to be under 170. >> I move to approve the amended agenda. >> Second. All in favor? >> Aye. >> Uh, next we we all were provided minutes from our
002last meeting. Are there any questions, additions, or corrections that need to happen to that? >> I move to approve the minutes as presented. >> Second. >> All in favor? >> Aye. >> Uh, next we'll move on to our routine consent items, approval of reports, travel, monthly personnel, bill list, payroll claims, and donations, as well as field trip requests. Are there any questions uh in regards to those items? >> I move to uh approve the routine consent item items, approval of reports, travel, monthly personnel, bill list, payroll claims, donations, and field trip requests. >> Second. All in favor? >> Aye. >> At this time, I'll turn over to Dr. Shoemaker. >> So, thank you. Um uh as many of you know, that we've um advertised for the high school um principal position, and we thank Kirk
003Gammon for um his service, for his friendship, and for all of these that he's done for um for our kids in the community. Um I had the opportunity today um after we concluded the search uh to talk to uh Lynae in a meeting, and um and told her um who the choice was, and she said he would be so happy. So, during the meeting, uh he's she texted back and said he's eight static. So, that selection is uh Kim Nicholson as the new principal of >> No. >> So, that's that's awesome. Uh Kim's done a fantastic job, and and Kirk and Kim are very close, and worked together previously, and Kim's done such a a wonderful job um that um uh she's now now the principal. So, um he will continue the vision, and we
004look forward to his continued service. Um so, we we also that creates an assistant principal vacancy, and we quickly went to Molly Bates, and said, "Would you be interested in being an assistant principal?" And you said, "Yes." Is that >> We're excited. >> And we're we're excited. >> And and she said, "I got to get Will a net for tonight." So, it looks like it's done. That's That's good. So, Molly is the new assistant principal. As far as we know, um Kim's the first female principal at New Castle High School, and certainly is the first uh tandem uh leadership assistant principal principal uh female. So, we're We're excited about that, but we're excited, you know, the work that you bring and the dedication that you've demonstrated already um really got you the job. So, continue
005it. That's all. >> Thank you. >> And it was nice because um we we were I always like to go in, when possible, to to let the staff know um ahead of time before it hits the paper, and you know, you find out on Facebook or whatever. And um and so, they were very very happy. Uh a couple of board members here, and uh that was nice, too. So, well done. Uh you don't have to say anything you feel like. You don't It's It's completely up to you, or I can move on to the We can move on to the next thing. You already said stuff to the staff, so >> I don't have to say anything. That's okay. >> I just want to say thank you. I really appreciate the opportunity and Herb has
006actually already texted me today, so that meant a lot. >> Oh, good to hear from him. >> Yeah. >> That's awesome. >> Certainly. That's certainly >> Yeah, very excited uh for you guys, excited for our corporation. So, obviously it's a huge It's a huge uh positions, and uh just looking forward to Uh next, we will move on to the uh submission of monthly corporation uh curricular uh receipts and disbursements, fund reports. This isn't something that we vote on. Uh just something we can review and ask questions on if we have any of those. All right. Uh next, we will move on to our new business, and with that, we have the retiree recognition, and I will turn that over to Dr. Shoemaker. >> So, uh when we look at this, um we have well over
007300 years of service uh, and that's really phenomenal. Um, I think it's the most since I've been here um, uh, that's retired in terms of years of service, not the number of people. So, we've got a lot of great veterans here and we're losing a lot. Um, I want to say thank you to not just the the teachers, but it's the the the family members that that, you know, um, sometimes take that backseat to grading papers or projects or you know, on field trips or what whatever, you know, is the topic is yours. Um, and so, I want to thank you for that because it's it's that's your gift of service as well. Um, because sometimes, um, you know, um, uh, it's time-consuming. Not not sometimes, it it always is time-consuming. So, we want to
008thank you. Um, so, what we're going to do is we'll go through and if you'd like to say something, um, and it's great to see so many family members here. You know, I see former great students, you know, I see former board members and my future eye doctor, that's a good thing. It's always good to see people come back. So, um, we're going to start with Jennifer Auspaugh, 30 years, 25 at Newcastle Middle School, uh, English teacher. So, Jennifer, come on up. >> And and I would pick the the person that started last. I would pick the last. >> It's alphabetical. >> I didn't know. >> And if you'd like to say anything, you can. If you don't want If you don't want to. >> I'm good. >> Okay. >> Thank you. >> All right,
009thank you. Next, we've got Amy Mattingly, 31 years, Parker. All in second grade? >> No. >> Okay. Okay. Well, the last one's Parker. >> The last >> one is correct. Yep, correct. Yep. >> Well, hold on. Thank you. >> Thank you. Thank you. >> Jim Mathis, 32 years. Now, this says 30 years at Wilbur Wright. Is that Is that >> No. Yeah. >> I'm not going to get that one anymore. I'm one for one for three, so Good baseball. >> Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. >> Jennifer McGallon, 33 years. I'll just give 33 years. >> There you go. Thank you. >> Martha McGrew, 200 uh 12.5 years at the high school special education. I will say it's an honor to be with Ralph at the Optimist Club. I usually sit by Evan. He gets
010me in trouble. I need to sit by Ralph is what I need to do. Kristy Williamson, 33 years. We have two people retiring to go babysit grandchildren. We cannot compete with that. >> Good. >> And Christie's one of those, right? >> And Beth Witham, 37 years. >> You're the second babysitter, right? You're the only >> It's funny if we if we were all children, they'd be they'd be they'd be good with that. Um I will say um I want to thank uh you for your contributions and uh especially Jennifer Magallanes just a a word when we um embarked on um a lot of um Well, we were we were the lowest paid um in the corporation as far as teachers uh many, many years ago. And um we're now the highest and our starting salary
011is higher than Noblesville. Uh that's pretty impressive and it's really teamwork that got that done. It's not finger pointing. It's um collaboration and it's having a common vision and working together and you can do a lot if you just work together. So, um I want to thank you um and it was you know, Mark um Schlatterbeck was in in in influential in that and Melissa Law. So, it was a lot of teachers and a lot of people that um came together for that. So, you're a representative well. Um so, thank you. Thank you all. Anything from the board? >> No, just thank you all for your guys' commitment. Um some of you've had my kids. Some of your uh daughters and babysat my kids and uh and that's that's a feat of its own. Uh
012especially with little Livvi. She's a wild one. But, uh I just thank you guys for your commitment to our community and and our kids and uh just we're just blessed to have you guys. >> Very blessed. >> And your families, yeah. Even Naya. >> So, um Raymond, can you take a picture of all the retirees? Um and then that way, if you want to leave, you can leave. If you want to stay, you can stay, too. Um but if you have dinner reservations, you can do what you want. But, um there still is a few more days of school left, so please please be careful on the way home. Night night, Bryce. Night. Thank you. >> Thank you. >> I know, I I have to stay. >> I'm counting on the young ones to come.
013Those older siblings >> Yeah, all right. See you. >> See you. It was nice seeing you again, Bryce. >> See you. >> Good job, Bryce. >> We'll go ahead and continue >> Yeah, sure. >> with item B. And that is the uh review of for approval of 2026-2027 middle school and high school handbooks. >> Mhm. >> Any questions? >> Those Those have been updated um largely um due to um legislation such as Senate Bill 78 which indicates that students are not to have cell phones um or um personal electronic devices which communicate uh during the school day. So, um yeah. So, we had to update the handbooks to reflect the policies and the policies we're going to go over on next. Anything else? >> No. And we will we approve the 2026-2027 middle school and
014high school handbooks. >> Uh so moved or second. >> All in favor? >> Aye. >> Uh next we have the first reading of the updated policies. >> So, there uh each one of these policies were changed by Church, Church, Hittle, and Antrim and they were forwarded to us. I provided the the board um with the um changes. They were redlined and uh red font so you could quickly see what was changed. There were a couple of them, I think uh A300 and A301 which were sub- sub- substantial and again, those were related to um cell phone use and electronic device use. >> Any questions after the uh retreat? >> No. >> All right. We will move on to uh item D and that is the uh storage barn uh bid process. >> So, um like
015I said, we've got we're getting three bids. The first bid came in at 1:53 um and we will get two other bids because we need to because it's over $50,000. Um >> Where are these barns going to be? Are they >> It's It's one barn. It's a 50 by 100, I think is what we had quoted. >> And where is it going to be? >> That's going to be um uh just to the west of the career center, to the north of the old tennis courts. >> So, is that where the stall is, right? >> It's It's in a It's a It's a fenced in gravel area right there. >> Right. Okay. >> Fenced in gravel area. >> Right. >> Is this the last one? >> Any uh >> The audience is just >> We
016don't have to do anything here. >> We're reviewing the uh >> just a discussion. >> I have a second. >> Um, it it actually should be approved. >> To be approved at that amount? >> I'm sorry, yeah. >> Uh >> I I move to approve the um uh >> storage barn uh bid process with uh 170 a hundred seventy thousand dollar maximum. >> Second. >> All in favor? >> I. >> And then next we will move on to the building grounds and transportation services update. >> Now, um we are finishing uh that the new multi-purpose restroom facility. We're going to be adding a retaining wall along the sidewalk which occurs around the old field. Uh that's the next large piece to be completed. Other than that, we're just waiting on punch list items to be
017finished up and then we'll be able to open those restrooms up. Uh the career center roof and it's going to They will start putting that on in June. We will have pre-con meetings for that coming up in about 2 weeks for that to take place. Um, we are also going to be starting the resurface of the track in June and those pre-con meetings are coming up here very quickly as well. A lot of preparation to get ready for those items. We also have um bids not bids out. We got quotes back to have the fence on the north side of the old field uh replaced with a black and coating and to add a gate that goes directly to those restrooms. So, excited about all of those improvements in that area. Um, then of course
018preparing for the summer, all of the maintenance and custodians are preparing for all of the movements that are going to be taking place throughout the buildings. Um especially at the high school, there's a lot of room changes that that are going to be happening, so they're preparing for that. And then, summer cleaning is always a large task, and so as soon as the students leave uh in June uh or May, uh they're going to start in knocking all that out and and and run with it. So, excited about that piece and everything that comes into play in the summer. That's it for me. >> Question, how how are we doing to um facilitate restroom usage for the multi-purpose? Is that going to be When will they be open and all that kind of stuff? >>
019So, we have right now we've discussed having that um those locks keyed for a G19, which is the key that at but that the coaches have and the athletic department has. So, it would be we would lock it we would the expectation would be that it would be locked unless there was a team or an event taking place, right? So, it wouldn't be open necessarily to the public, but >> Right, unless there was an event or student use going on. >> Is the band having one? >> The band will have one as well. >> Okay. >> If I might comment, I stopped by the baseball field today at Sunnyside and Jeff Thompkins has a bull deck has installed the rough-in wiring for the lighting and REMC was there today setting poles and installing lights on
020the poles. So, it's uh pretty exciting to to see that going on. >> Yep. >> Sunnyside field looks immaculate right now and has really for the past year we went through a lull or we went through some different changes. Uh you know, there was some attention brought to it and being good stewards of donations and the local business names on it and it I've been there a couple times and driven by. It looks great uh and it keeps improving and the lights is a dream come true for a lot of us baseball junkies. >> The guys from REMC said that when they turn those on it's going to glow like Field of Dreams. >> Good. Good. >> Credit to Josh Cooper. >> Yeah. >> To get to get that. >> Yeah. >> He's He's worked
021hard on those. He's really good. >> Yeah. Anything else on that, George? All right. We'll move on to the uh superintendent's report. >> So, just again, I may have mentioned it last time, but we did get the uh the the school board did receive the ISBA board recognition um for example of governance. Um and we do have that hanging up here. We also want to put up the um uh the the recognition from the Optimist Club um our partnership too. Um no spotlight on new programs tonight that we're we're turning the future. Uh last day of school for students is May 22nd. Senior recognition is May 28th. And Bundy and commencement is May 31st at 2:00 p.m. in the field house. Today Stephen Sullivan was chosen as the Region 6 assistant principal of the year.
022So, congratulations to him. He had to do with this year or he wouldn't get it done. He'll be the >> Yeah. >> He's He's moving into a new role. He's actually getting a promotion. So, uh two superintendents have called us to visit the high school to see innovative programs and initiatives. And that's always an honor when people call and say can we come and look at this program or that program. So, and that's just in the last week and a half or so. It's been really cool. Let's go into the um the board photos. And um this one's all about Parker Elementary and kudos to Holly Miller uh for raising money for the new um equipment there. Uh she did a phenomenal job getting matching grant and then a lot of donations. And it really,
023you know, look at what one person can do what one person can do. Um >> Wow. >> Yeah. So, um Uh credit to her and um the kids are going to be the benefactors. So, >> I was I was really impressed with the communication around when they were finishing up installing that and the uh kind of the unit unity or unification between the Little League and and the school. Uh they shared a I noticed on social media there was a lot of sharing of information about We know it looks great. It's not ready for you >> yet. >> Uh and they they did a good job of help keeping the kids uh safe until it was actually ready. So, it was kind of cool to see community come together like that. >> Great leadership. This
024um and the kids are the benefactors. Um here we've got the All-City band um concert this past Thursday. Uh and that chicken keeps on um appearing. So, he's kind of a ham. And so, the chicken's a ham. >> No, no, that wasn't >> I don't know who I know. >> Oh, wasn't it? >> I know. >> You look something >> I know who it is. I said He's He's a little >> He's a little Sorry. >> That's a topic for tomorrow. Washington, D.C. I did get reports back on this. It was a phenomenal trip um and went really really well. Any Any comments on that? >> Uh we appreciate the opportunity to fly. I think we were able to really capture almost everything that we saw, but um cut a lot of time out. So,
025I think that that will be our proposal moving forward. So, it was a really really good trip. A lot of good parents that supported kids. Some uh first-time fliers on their first time. Uh things that he sees and >> How many kids? >> 30 right at 30. 32 33. >> Mr. White, what time did you have to be at the airport on when you departed? >> We met at the airport 3:15. >> Oh, wow. Yeah. >> The We got back to Louisville at 5:00. >> It's beautiful. >> That's definitely a >> in two years, too. >> Yeah, I wonder why. >> I just heard a lot of the cost difference between driving and flying was about $150. >> Really? >> Yeah, cuz we eliminated an entire day and the time on the bus. So, it
026was not I don't think we lost because of that. >> Good. Good. >> Yeah. Yeah. Well, thank you for doing that cuz it's such a learning opportunity. Never been to Blue Springs. It is rich. >> I'm going to make friends. >> Okay, at Eastwood, um they celebrated Earth Day. Cleaned up the place and working hard and helping others. Associate's degrees, um that is a lot of money saved if you just look at that. And that's all Henry County students through the Career Center. Uh but still, um all of these students received uh two years of college education. Um really, really is amazing. So, congratulations to them and their families. And the congratulations to McKinsey and all the uh um collab membership corporations. Uh Wild Wild Cats Karate, um so yeah, I I think the adults
027were more excited about this one than the kids. Kids were were Good. Good. Um it's fun to get out and explore and experience new things. So, um Miss Cook uh second home for uh enthusiasm. The next one's Copy Paste, it's called. And that was Ethan Teacher took a day to honor Mr. York copying his style and giving him a book card. He passed it with flying colors. So, Tony's going to get a little bit of ribbing there. And that's fantastic. No No No No No No No No. No Alabama. That's good. How are you? >> Yeah. >> Good. And then there was prom. Sharon member went out of style and you can tell she dresses up as Elvis and I saw the the video and she cut a rug there with a little help from
028our students and off and left this hair and she looks beautiful. Whoa. So this is the glow party and that is a dance and it was by Riley and it was a fundraiser. They actually raised just under $4,500 which is really impressive and they had fun. So this is always a favorite of mine. The academic awards it's really not it's the top students. It was used to be the top 10. So it it fluctuates but I always love it because the kids speak about that person which has made a difference for them but then Daniel you know Mr. Daniel was up there and I thought it was great that Mr. and Mrs. Shoemaker were both recognized and that girl had never had DJ but she was just inspired by his resiliency and the way he
029conducts himself and what he's had to battle through and she just had seen that every day and thought that inspires me. I thought that was really cool. So yeah just and then obviously Rene was honored there by her daughter. So a lot of touching memories there and the kids did a phenomenal job. I just felt like their speeches were great. So students versus teachers You can tell by happy how happy the kids are that they won and so but they the adults took it in good fun. We do have a good group. Some of them some of them took it in good fun. >> Some may have took it better. >> Fine. Fine. We're all fine. We're fine everyone. >> Uh unified field day, um that was a fantastic. We were actually here in the
030in the in the warm ones. But the chicken made an appearance for that as well. That's always a a a a good It was the first time that we held it that way, um but we've had unified track meets before, but it is just out of line. So, uh credit to everybody involved there, especially Mrs. Nicholson for making it happen. Uh and and there's the group picture. And then um You've heard of house arrest. I think this is coop arrest, maybe? >> Coop arrest? I don't know. I don't know. >> I'm with you. >> Rain Rain you put that in there, didn't you? >> Yes, I did. >> I got to think that's hilarious. >> How'd that get past you? How did you get to see about that? >> WTHR What we do for our
031What we do for the kids, right? >> Well, the chicken couldn't fit in the back, in all fairness. In all fairness. >> He's been wanting to go on a diet. >> So I heard. >> That's it. >> All right. So, next we'll move on to the budget, and Megan, that's all you. >> Mhm. So, to cover expenses incurred in April, um I'm asking for a transfer of 380,000 from the education fund That is a little bit higher than normal, but that was a pay We had three pays in April, so that justifies the increase over most months. >> Okay. I move to approve the uh transfer from education funds to operations funds as presented. >> Second. >> I. >> And then lastly, we have the uh public questions and comments. >> I want to say
032something. Uh Friday there was so many many things going on with the park route thing, unified, and I got to a few of them. It it warmed my heart to work to have the unified field day. But what really warmed my heart and was the way the kids behaved at the student teacher basketball game and when they played the national anthem, you could have heard a pin drop. And the respect that the kids demonstrated I've been in a lot of schools and a lot of times when they're playing the national anthem, you can barely hear it, but they they stood there, they were quiet, they were respectful. So, I am just so thankful that is the expectation. >> Yeah, it's a good reflection of the leadership. >> Thank you. >> Any other questions, comments?
