girls please feel to grab cookie in the seat the we'll take three minute recess hi [Music] no oh C [Music] spe something you [Music] spe [Music] he that we will start our meeting up again thank you all for S CR Valley great thank you Mr that said we uh after couple miscellaneous items we've got to do and then we'll get to the reason free to in so we need to First approve our uh 32nd meeting we had week or so ago back in July and that we will move on to the superintendent report thank you everyone for being here good even Welcome to our new school here it's going to be very short and sweet because we do have a longer presentation with Mr naan and Mrs weas on our back to school events that
I know want to hear about so our theme this year is friends so it is season8 it's my e year at superintendent so I'm super super excited to be here able to serve our families and our students and our commun so thank you and it's episode one board meeting first board meeting and it's going to be the one where the PS not get out of the part this year um so again thank you for being here tonight um I shared with the staff we have four major I want to say norms and goals of what we're working on and first of all the definition of friend is a person has a strong liking for and Trust in another and it's very important that we work hard um to trust each other and to know that
we're all working for the common goal of increasing student achievement and putting our efforts into teaching and learning the definition of teamwork the collaborative effort of a group to achieve a common goal or to complete a task in an effective and efficient way and we work very very hard will continue to work effectively and efficiently right we're going to work smarter not harder in order to meet the needs of all of our students and staff and families um academic rigor creating an environment in which each student is expected to learn at high levels so we are going to push our students a little bit um I made some personal calls this summer where we analyzed data and we um had some conversations with parents and kids to say we want to put your students in
the higher level math class we want to put students in algebra do we have your support um our data has shown that a lot of our students who are um in the middle who are proficient but ready to go to highly proficient or are partially proficient kids that are ready to go to proficiency we have to push them a little bit right and raise the bar because our students will meet our expectations and the definition of perseverance the ability to keep doing something in spite of obstacles grit and determination so that's something that we worked on with leader and me in terms of all everybody having to persevere and we don't give up and there's things that we may not know how to do yet but we will teach our students and we will get
there um we're off to a great start and I just want to thank our entire staff students and parents for a great start of the school year with only one new certified teacher we have truly been able to hit the ground ready and get right to work with our data talks our data walls and I did see Mrs AUST here did she leave oh there she is okay that's our one new certified teacher so my entire 30 plus years of education I have never been anywhere where we um did not have any turn over in the elementary school level and we had one Middle School teacher retire so that really is a true Testament of the fact that we have a great dedicated team we have teachers and staff members that love being here as
much as we do and we are just very fortunate and grateful for that so thank you um there 's just a few pictures of our Colts on the first day of school and there you see some of our staff members with our friends um stage taking group pictures of our team there's our board in the middle um we were missing a few that we will screenshot in we're gonna put your head in there Mr GI we're gonna add your picture there um but again so we're just very fortunate we're going to have these pictures up on our board in the front um on our extraordinary board so thank you also just an enrollment update so we do have 605 students Ka preschool there's 33 students so we have 638 students on campus so at the
end of the year last year we ended up with 643 students on campus so we're pretty close to where we left off with a decrease primarily in preschool right now um so we will be looking um at increasing enrollment we're currently recruiting students for Kinder first six and seventh grade so if you have any neighboring friends relatives we have a student that's driving in we have a lot of students who drive in from TD area so let's go forth and do and make it another great year and we were fortunate to have both the C show up to our first awards assembly and it happens to be something that was here on the Das but I will um keep it a secret so thank you thises my report thank you very much first day was
a good day so with that we go to the admin report Mr all right welcome everyone so we're just going to start off with a little bit about how we started the school year we always start pre-service week before our students come with all of our staff we rolled out the theme of I'll be there for you because that's truly what we want to make sure that all of our families know we are here for you support and here to serve so we went over team collaboration we had guest speakers we had your hunt that happened with our staff and we jumped really first thing into meetings about our student our teachers got to meet let's say preschool got to meet with our Kinder teachers about their rosters our Kinder teachers stayed behind and they
met with the first grade teachers and went over ideas shared things as they pass on the torch for our students from one grade to the next with really great collaborative meetings leader in me and professional development about our leader program our teachers put on lessons modeled for each other as we prepared to Ru out the year for our amazing qus we had English Lang language learner training by our coordinator m l Zoo dual language collaboration and that's where our pastors who are teaching Spanish eth grades we had all of them meet together and we planned for the start of our school year and we also have technology systems and professional development and you can see our teachers in this picture down here that's just one of many pictures that we had this is what our
data room looks like we sit collaborate we have data walls and we just get to really talk so that we can plan unique to the need of our students and here's some of those pictures scavenger hun collaboration we had Mr Vance and Mrs de and Mrs bionas Mr Foxx this is a picture of them acting out and modeling for us they were modeling the skit about how you're there for your friends so Mr Vance was moping around and he was in a bad mood Mrs Dey was gonna help out so we learned a lot from each other then we had the meeting ret night we all got to have you on campus with us we want to thank you for coming out being proactive and getting ready for the the school year it's great to
see you all back on campus you're smelling faces the Colts excited to meet their new teachers and see their past teachers in stff and we just want to give a special shout out and thanks to those who came and had taable set up to give information before eache Club Valley Library UCC Arizona Rangers our PTC and our foundation and then the first week of school last week it was five cool days some schools start on the Thursday Friday we started on a Monday and it was a great week we got a lot done so we thank those of you have kindergarteners or new are new to our district you many attended our breakfast that first day our students worked on positive behavior intervention supports rotation so that's what PBIS stands for so if you ask
them what did you do in your rotations what did you learn they went to the cafeteria we went over rules that are in expectations in the cafeteria the gym for when they go to assembly they rotated to the playground to just the bathroom areas and we had our team of our staff who they're waiting during those rotations all the way through eth grade so we can go over those procedures digital citizen citizens training for students with one-on laptops has been rolled out and has begun as well as our laptop roll out we got all of our laptops out last week with hard work from a lot of our staff and our librarian this is L new Middle School morning and schoolwide lunch procedures which is recessed before lunch and if you are leing before you
have heard a little bit more about the and the rationalist to why we're doing that we had the Lions Club come and help nurse with vision streamings so those just finished on Monday they started last week Sports practices and activity routes began beginning of the school year Awards assembl is how we ended last week it was a great assembly to recognize and welcome all of our folks back and we think those of you who were able to make it we're going to have more assemblies throughout the school year and we hope that we get to see who be able to come to some of them and then the play to grow parent information meeting which we had last Friday that's how we wrapped up our first week of school and we just held another meeting
today if you weren't able to make that we'll be posting the link to our website and sending it out on our weekly so you can see the video as well and that's just if you make sure that you're getting that this is new we're sending it out every week now and once a month we'll have even more information but we just want to make sure that we keep L we hear you we've heard feedback from you and we really take that to heart and we really want to make sure that any information that you need to know from week to week you have and if there's things that are missing please reach out to us and let us know if we can make sure that we get them in our in our we all right
so now we're going to go back to last year just toap some things um third quarter Sports last year for girls basketball we had 22 total athletes soccer 33 total athletes wrestling 10 athletes 65 athletes participated third quarter Sports Dr soccer received with Southern Valley League sportsmanship award you remember last year coach Morgan got it for the boys and girls which is really awesome and so we're really excited about the the growth and the sportsmanship of our coaches and our students for third quarter for fourth quarter softball we had 18 total athletes baseball had 15 total athletes track cat 89 total athletes which is the largest track team has ever had um and then 122 total athletes participated in fourth quarter Sports boys and girls both play first place in track okay so that was
like I don't think that's ever happened here as well where they both got first place was the great turnout so really excited about that and then we set many track records as well okay so really excited about that and you can view up in the lobby of the middle school when you go in there there's the track record board so go ahead and look have the year and the kids that Tri those records so it's a big accomplishment because I I I hear tears up here which means one of her children's name was taken off the board this year but we're really excited about [Music] that um School Safety and Security every year at the beginning of the year M Rico likes me just to update the board the things we've been doing and will
be doing to continue to keep the kids safe um the threat assessment team comprehension School threat which is seag we've got a team established that works with local law enforcement to do that as well um staff attended te County uh attacker training throughout the summer the Rangers participated in active attacker training as you many of you know when the sro's not on campus the Arizona Rangers still in and volunteer as they are here tonight as well for our safety so they also participated in active train so if anything happens they have been trained in those to help protect our staff and our students um we did the staff safety trainings which takes up a big bulk of the training at the beginning of the school year just to make sure all staff is on board
it went a little faster this year since we only have one brand new staff um but we were able to do the new St training induction as well as all the returning staff um big increase in surveillance cameras is the board knows we were able to get that all paid for from the school facilities board and get that updated and all the cameras are up and going and have been very resourceful over the last couple of days resolving issues already [Music] the the mandatory report training will take place uh tomorrow this Wednesday as we move forward um the one thing that i' probably add to this slide that I was just remembering that I talked about in my last presentation on Friday but not this one when it comes to the new school so uh
the electronic a lot of the parents concerns that have comeing talk to me is um what happens if my kid doesn't have a cell phone and there's an emergency like an active attacker and the research out there coming from the FBI coming from DPS coming from the sheriff's department is if a parent is trying to call or text their child their attention is not on Surviving the event and it's better for them to follow the directions of our staff and we promise as a staff to try to do our very very best to return your children to you every night and that's where their attention needs to be and so having that cell phone on them doesn't help keep them safe during the school day as soon as we um have the situation under control
we will be notifying you and reaching out to you through parents square and so those directions that's the best way to make sure that we get through an event if he forbid anything ever does happen to our school but you've got to trust those plans we train our kids all of our kids have already been talked to I encourage you to talk to your kids about our emergency plans say I understand this week your teachers met with you tell me about that right unfortunately this is one of those necessary evils that just is a part of schools today but we do take it serious and we do have plans so please understand that those personal devices um distract your children from that and we need their attention all in so that we can get them
home to you get them through that event um reoccurring issues if you saw my previous slide presentation it's going to get a little repetitive so I'll speed this up a little bit but social emotional concerns social behavior gossip rumors not approved electronic devices during class lack of coping skills Ving devices including marijuana and nicotine this was been much higher so um I've been here uh going on my 17th year at Continental School and when I first started working here for probably the first eight we never had any of those substances here on campus ever um and then it got to the point the last couple years it's been one or two devices um a year that we were able to get out of the hands of the kids um and deal with the parents and
get the kids back on track and it's been great last year we had eight recovered devices in one school year which seems like a lot um it's a lot for us but when you look at like sunnny side and TD and even Serita it is much much much higher where they're dealing with that number um probably weekly and so with us we're but our commitment to you is it's zero tolerance and we're cracking down on that so please help us with that okay we want you know really inv our reoccuring issues plan that we do to help mitigate those things is leader and me Target assemblies by Administration oneon-one or small group sessions with our counselor or with Administration provide Guardians with outside resources so for instance if a child that we do catch that
has a vaping device we get them the information and the resour resources for drug counseling for the different stuff Fe county has a lot of resources for families and students to help them overcome addiction so we really work on those as well and making sure that it's just your kid was got with the device you later it's not that way we really want to give them the proper help and supports that they need okay and then of course we use restorative conferences which we've talked a lot about over the past year uh technology challenges this is a slide from the previous presentation of all the issues that we're we've been dealing with um this is from Tom Horn um this is a quote that he just put out Miss Rico two weeks ago I think
he came out with this quote it is enough that they get bullied on their cell phon when they are away from school it should not be happening while they are in school trying to learn so that bullying occurs 24 hours a day to permit that bullying to go on 24 hours a day shows a lack of empathy for students and his purpose for this was encouraging schools to have policies to help give students a break from that social media and that cyber bullying that occurs on a regular basis in our society today our cell phone policy we talked about this in the meeting before but I'll go over it briefly um there's not much of a change before last year kids were supposed to have them put away in their backs backpacks and turned off
completely the change this year is placed in a provided Lock storage container for grades 5 for8 during the school day middle schoolers will be storing their phones in their first period classes and retrieving them the last five minutes of the day um for kids grades K through 8 cell phones will still remain with the old policy off and put in their back yes does that apply to watches it does yes it does um any anything that they can access the internet on um for all technology use for educational purposes we are a one toone campus we have Chromebooks that we do have the ability to Monitor and to make sure that they are on appropriate educational sites at all times and so that's um what that's for so they they can lock those up as
well and and if you missed the meeting I encourage you we're going to put a link the explanations will be there of why um and how we expect to move forward with that and I just want to reiterate never ever have we ever said we're going to search the kids at the beginning of the day but if they're out have them on we'll ask them to turn them off and put them in their backpack for the day if they needed to safely get home once they get off the bus have them get off the bus turn it on so that you can track them and do that that's perfectly okay okay um once again up here we really didn't change a whole lot but students in violation of this policy we're receive a minimum of
one day lunch detention refusal to turn over the device upon request of a staff member will result in a referral for insubordination we're not really going after phones it's not it's not what our goal is our goal is to create an environment where the kids are paying attention they don't have those distractions through the school day once they're home it's the parents prerogative to have that but here at school we have noticed and as you saw that whole list before a few slides back of the issues those all happened here at this campus in the last two years okay and once again if you look at that link you'll see so this is what the case looks like it does lock the reason why we lock is because we don't it's not because we're trying
to keep them away from the kids it's if we're going to hold on a device of a student we want to guarantee that student that their device is safe and so that someone else can't come and pull it out of a little pocket holder and so that's that's why the lock device if they get picked up early and stuff it watch the link because I take probably 10 minutes and talk about the slide and explain all those little things that some of you may have questions um this is neighboring districts what they're doing in Arizona um there's one that's not and I put this here because can you imagine having over half a million students in one school district that's a crazy concept um and they're they're implementing a reduction C in Los Angeles School
District cell phone policies that doesn't affect January 1 um different things that we are implementing for systems and activities um once again watch the link today but it talks about lunch with play let gr play Club let gr experience play based recess better playgrounds Adventure playgrounds increased opportunities for Middle School Playgrounds student referees SL self conflict resolution techniques um use of technology and electronics recess prior to lunch increased free time for middle schoolers I get an extra 20 minutes in the morning to just kind of blow off in the morning and play it's been going amazing it's really exciting to see um kindergarten students have their own play time in the morning um and then early release Wednesdays picnics for our middle school students desired outcomes by implementing all of those keep in mind it
wasn't just like a cell phone thing this is all encompassing to help create a happier safer environment for their education is decrease in disciplinary infractions decrease in anxiety and an increase in positive mental health increase in positive social interactions increase in positive test scores reduction in cyber bowling increase in creative thinking and decrease to decrease disruption to the educational process we talked about morning uh free play so this is was taken last Wednesday morning of the kids out playing volleyball in the morning tether ball out soccer one of the kids brought in a backpack a chest set which was awesome because we're looking at getting tables with CHS on them on the top um as well as benches and we are looking at introducing um out here on this playground cornhole ladder ball ping pong
fball and Connect 4 all concrete materials that will last in Arizona um to go in this playground to increase activity there's a fundraiser happening Friday evening um you can look it up on the PTC Facebook page or our Facebook page and it's in the parent newsletter for that so come out and support that because we're really trying to just put that right back into to free play for our students to get them interacting with one another and make school fun and enjoyable the last one talked about sharpening the sock not only can you go back just one side for me please right here have it seven sharpen the all B feels best that's talking about we expect a lot of our students here at Continental School um you know the tests are always out being
right we're always trying to to get the curriculum and do our best but it's important to Remember at the end of the day these are kids and they need need to be happy and they need to build that self-esteem um and so by having them play and interact with others they're going to develop the social skills that's needed to be successful in the workplace as well as build that self-confidence that all of them need and so we talk about bance FS best that's what that's referring to we also for Middle School have picnic Wednesdays this was our first Wednesday um and here the kids are playing having a good time Middle School they get to play GaGa ball so once they learned how to play it they were really excited and you can once again
refer to that link and I'll talk a lot more about both those the inspiration for this is the book called The anxious Generation Um this is something that I've now completed reading three times I'm working on my for I just can't put it down it's amazing um you can get it on Audible um so if you're driving back and forth work but it really talks about starting in 2010 the effects that cell phones have had on our youth and our society it also talks about um how we can combat some of the issues related to that not that phones are bad but there's an appropriate time to have them an appropriate time for social media and there's literally in the book there's a chapter for parents there's a chapter for Community leaders there's a chapter
for schools and so a lot of the ideas that we're implementing through here so if you're like why are these changes um you can blame my summer reading and a lot of the staff has read it um Miss Rico Miss quoss some of our school board members have read it as well um so it's one of those things that I encourage every parent in the room this is mindblowing stuff um and will really help you understand where we're at as a society and what we can do together to give our kids the best um the best chance of survival and reduce anxiety that we're seeing in our youth daily in my in my job and in my office so that's that's my goal is to help them um so although some things like the cell
phone policy may seem restrictive it's my best interest is a heart with them and I really think that these changes will reduce the anxiety and our kids will be happier here at school but in life in general our teachers are the ones who shared that some of our teachers sent us a leap and before summer all right thank you so much thank you thank you now we're move to the park you guys probably here I know normally do this I'm gon take 30 seconds if you notice the campus um the grass in the back the state structur the outdoor music stuff most schools of our Cal don't have right so it's due toal funding sources donations Foundation from the community and More's coming the let grow on play program which be which is get those
kids that were either on their cell phone or there's a wall flower sitting against the wall on board you know whether it's going to be Checker or cornhole or whatever it might be um and just a couple other just so you know you may you probably won't be here but Mr Greg got approval from the state they're going to rebuild the stage in the auditorium in the gym which has been Mr Ferguson's been begging in for how many years 10 10 yeah so um so that's been approved and getting ready to rate the check so thank you great for helping C that um I hold this position I don't know if you guys know but those laptops You all take home we're the only School of this size or whatever that 100% of the kids
have right so that's a big thing you know we' managed to get grants from the mine who probably our main source um um but then other grants to keep them up because they do great wear out and for Mr Ferguson and his volunteers that help him maintain those things 600 laptops plus it's it's crazy but you know it's it's that's where we are today and last but some of you probably have heard I'm G to embarrass Mrs OST we're just related by name but it is crazy with because it's obviously a different not well used name but um welcome to our school She's our new science teacher in middle school so welcome so with that we gonna go with Cult of the month okay all of our of the month we're going to come up
here if you're in preschool you're light up here then okay I'll help you free when your child is up here to come up and take pictures and then you'll be meeting Mrs nalii back there for shirt shirt so if you want toomp your child you can help the right and we like to also the Java because they for the past I think almost five years they've been providing us with certificates for ice cream students big thanks to them Hanah woohoo Hannah Dr Robinson writes Hannah is always kind to other she's a great communicator and uses her skills to help others to be safe and responsible she is ready for kindergarten it's been a pleasure to have her in the Continental PR School Daniela is a wonderful student she shows responsibility in all aspects of her
learning she has excelled in all areas Daniela has made many friends because of her kindness and compassion I will miss her next year best of Love Mrs tesso and just a reminder they might have said it but these were our May qus of the month so we're honoring them now all right this is from her Kinder teacher last year Miss Roop as Mia's Kinder teacher I was lucky to get her as a student halfway through the year during our time together I watched her adjust in grow Mia is going to do amazing in first grade as she is always a kind friend she works hard to be safe on campus she's a very responsible student congratulations [Applause] McKenzie McKenzie is a student that lights up the classroom with her attitude of positivity she truly has
a heart of gold McKenzie goes above and beyond as a cult who is safe kind and responsible there have been countless times when McKenzie go goes out of her way to help a friends in need either in the classroom or on the playground McKenzie's is very motivated student I'm so lucky that I had the opportunity to learn and grow with you I'm proud of you keep up the great work love Mrs salisbery [Music] Braven shows responsibility by working diligently on his literacy centers daily he is a kind and gentleman to the girls in class by always letting them go first during activities he's safe on the playground and in class congratulations Raven Mrs Gra [Music] Giana has worked hard to learn and she's shown a lot of growth in first grade she's kind because she's
respectful to teachers and staff whenever instructions or requests are given to her she uses classroom supplies and school equipment safely Giana is responsible because she's honest and completes her work on time keep up the good work [Music] Giana emry is CT of the month for May she's a team player in and out of the C room she's kind to others making sure they're okay and will put a smile on anyone's face she's inquisitive funny and a very strong girl I'm so proud of you keep on shining bright and being uniquely you miss men congratulations all right talk about growth Brighton you're truly someone that I can say became attached to and I'm so glad that I had you in my class this year you taught me so much and I'm so glad that I had
the opportunity to guide you to see how you'd walk in my class happy and ready to work was so amazing I wish you nothing but the best and I know you're going to do great miss Jan [Music] John Carlo has been staying after dismissal for a few moments to help clean up even more than what was asked he's always going above and beyond to check to see if he can help in any way or do anything to help me he has been a joy to have in my classroom this year [Music] Alden is a friend to everyone and always shows kindness to others he's responsible with his schoolwork and homework and always follows our class rules congratulations Al Lincoln has been an outstanding Continental cult all year he is kind to his peers helps out

while you're still working and teaching and having a life but you guys do it and I've seen it before it's amazing and it's kind of an apology she only more yes yes M yes Mr yes sh District financial report please so like I said at the last meeting this report's not going to look like any of the ones that you've seen in the past we still haven't done the roll over the fiscal year from last year we're still working in it um but other than that I will open up any questions that you may have there's really not much to report on Roll once we finish so we are still in an incumbrance period for last year so any bills that were from last year that come in we can still P last year money
so we're just waiting for the month to end and then we'll begin doing completion reports on grants and and so hopefully October is so your summary in the district corly update was really good from all you people that contributed and um Greg Jers was very helpful really helpful um but that said is there any other legislation out there that we should not that we could do much about know about that so her may help us so they did pass some legislation in the last session where the error with the taxes in in the school district that is being fixed um unfortunately it won't be fixed in time for folks to notice it on this election um I believe it's got an effective date of January 1 25 so what's going to happen is everybody's property
taxes will decrease drastically and that's the state's way of getting you back your money that you have only paid and then the year after that will be readjusted to what it should normally be okay so that did get taken care [Music] of to I moveed to approve the district financial report second yes new business time to spend some some of school facilities board money this one is um for the stage so before you today um we finally got approval yesb got money and they finally released their first strings and start spending some of it um before you is a quote from lcon Industries they were our lowest responsive bidder um what this will do is it will remove the old wooden stage in the gym and replace it with a new stage new lighting new
curtains so the whole shebang so we are asking for your approval to issue a purchase order to norcon Industries in the amount of 193,000 $ [Music] 5785 to IND has that been here since I was in school just about they actually took it from the old school and brought it up here with them so it has been all my Reas what's wrong with it I've been up there well too many more people get up there they'll be under it's just amazing how expensive things are so just so you know this isn't um this isn't a wooden pull out stage like like we currently have it's something newer something more modern um it's not going to take five people just to pull it out so it'll be an easy quick setup for you know so it's
going to be so much nicer it's going to be so much easier the set up and to take now when is this happening well you hav when might it happen um I talked with noron um once they get a PO they get it ordered we are hoping to have it installed and up to date and everything else prior to April okay so you know it's going to take some time to get it put together and everything else but Mrs yes M yes Mr M yes yes next is just a discussion I don't know if you guys read the political agenda the aspas is thrown out there which uh they go over at the delegate assembly here next it doesn't usually change that much year after year on the initiatives of what as is working on
