pictures and recordings and students let's make sure that we're respectful because they've been working really hard on all of this and that we cheer them on and webr and we also have a live stream Continental on our CSD 39 YouTube Chann Channel I don't know if youw we have that we do have a c39 YouTube channel so many of our events are live streamed so if we have family members who can make it today you can have them check out the live that will be there for them to see [Music] [Applause] later afternoon everyone as Miss said for quite a show I'm just going to talk to you for a couple of minutes and then we'll get on to the real the real show the fun um I have my notepad because I you know
I'm nervous up here uh talking instead of dancing so I don't want to forget anyone um so as was mentioned my name is Sherry and I'm with funh house Movement Theater which is a dance company that's been in Tucson since 1998 and I think we've been here in Continental doing dance residencies pretty soon after we started in Tucson I myself have been here for 15 plus is years and it is a highlight of my year to be able to come here so okay I'm not going to get te moving right on um I want to get some thank yous so I'm up here at the microphone but this is such a team effort in order to pull this off and make this happen so we have thank yous to the third and fourth grade teachers
who were fantastic group of teachers and to Miss Flowers especially for all of her coordination making this happen there's a lot of moving pieces [Applause] thank you to Mr pman and M for sharing their space their gym space the classrooms it was so helpful to be able to have access to those spaces um to miss Steve and the crew that helps move the chairs and charts in and out and in and out we put them through so much work uh in these last few days is so um to Mr F to Mrs bti thank you all so much for your support of the residen as M mentioned the Continental Foundation is one of the organizations that helps make this possible there are also a few other uh we have Country Fair white elephant the Arizona
Commission on the Arts and the Arts foundation for Tucson and Southern Arizona those are also big supporters of the dance residenc okay so now a quick explanation about what has been happening with these third and fourth graders for the last nine days we've just had nine days together about 45 minutes a day for each class and during that time they've learned a lot about movement about dancing across the floor about dancing in one spot low levels medium levels high levels slow tempo fast tempo they've learned about core qualities or ways in which we Mo our bodies sustained pendular abrupt vibratory they've learn to Mo move at the same time they learned to move one right after another in Canon those are just the highlights of the many things in regards to dance they've learned what
they've also learned is how to come together to create choreography so what you're going to see today is six classes and they chose songs Under the theme of different genres or types of music each teacher and class chose a genre and the class themselves listened to a few different selections under that type of music and voted on which piece of music they wanted and then they went through this improvisation process where they just kind of throw out whatever movement they would like I furiously take notes and then we come together as a class and we start to put those movements and maybe some other movements into sequences of choreography they do all of this as I said over the course of nine days they work on watching each other on honoring one another's ideas even
if it's something they don't want to do they get to figure out how to deal with that and be kind and supportive in the process so this is what's been going on what you see to today is their creativity it is not my creativity so their choreography their ideas about props costumes they were the final decision makers on all of these aspects okay so now on with the show our first dance is going to be a Miss Lane's class and Miss Lane's class they decided they wanted to do to the pop genre of music and after listening to several songs they chose a song called feel it still and they decided to use chairs as part of their dance so can I have Miss Lan's class if you would stand up and you're going to
walk to your beginning spots [Music] he Happ [Music] keep my hands on you [Music] my [Music] my en [Music] another [Music] [Applause] water [Music] our next class um is Miss W's class and the song that they chose is a song called shop and it's a song that we use within the context of the dance residency I teach about cannons um and in the dance residency we have music from all over the world and all all different genres of music Shan has always been a kid favorite it is written by an artist named Anna tiu she's from the country of Chile and she wrote the song as a protest song she wanted free education for everyone in her country the kids liked this song so much that they really wanted to use it as their performance
song so the song is shock and the dance is about unity and supporting everyone within a group Culture country so miss W class would you please walk on to stage and set yourself in your handh holding [Applause] go [Music] spe [Music] for fore [Music] spe fore spee [Music] spe for [Music] J [Music] water he never gets old for me our next class is Miss Hof's class and they chose the music style of Hip Hop they listened to a few different songs and unanimously chose MC hammers can't touch this so um you will get to see quite the M here in Miss class so miss class go ahead and stand up for me and you can walk on stage into your [Music] groups for [Music] all right so in this H dance as you see in
most of the dances there are times where they dance together in unison where they do the same movement at the same time there are times where you see one kid or one group go and then another and another and another we call Cannon then there are times where there's freestyle time where they get to do whatever moves they want to do for a certain period of time you saw that in the previous dances you'll see some of that in this dance and the other dances as well all right Can't Touch This tou touch [Music] this touch this [Music] at [Music] oh yeah [Music] [Applause] [Music] break down [Applause] and [Music] [Applause] spe [Music] so we're going to have Mrs Flowers room in just a moment there's going to take the stage back here and both
groups are going to teach all of you a dance so I'm going to get them on stage and then we'll talk about that part you guys could stand up for me great you're just GNA follow Dylan right here Dylan come right down through the center half of you will go on one not too [Music] okay so this is what Happ [Music] we're going to teach you a dance called the funy Penguin and we invite you to stand up for this dance if that works for your body if it works for your body to stay in a seat you can still do all of the moves with us so get yourself ready either staying seated or standing come back to silence for me water fall this is how the funy penguin goes you tip your ear
to your shoulder and your head moves around One Direction and then back shoulders go up and down up and down you stay Qui I'm going to set the microphone down and use my teacher elbows out and down out and down hips go one way then another you're going to circle them around and say hula ho here we go one knee up and then the other reach up one knee up and then the other we do that we do that twice then we're going to do some body parts moving and the kids already help me figure that out you're going to do your head first you can move your head any way that you want then we're going to do hands that's right hands for next hands with arms yes Liberty says hands with arms then
we're going to do hips and then want you feet and you can move your feet any way that you like then the last part we do this SE again and the very last bubble it always goes as Jack is pointing higher than the rest and so you grab that one have to reach for it you can later okay here we go everyone we're ready to [Music] should [Music] hear it [Music] love [Music] three [Music] it I can't touch this [Music] great Christian [Applause] all right Mrs class is Mrs CH rock music and there were so many songs that they wanted to choreograph to and they had so many ideas we could have just done three hours of Mrs Flowers class so it was a lot to keep up with them it was so exciting the
two songs that we landed on are both by Cold Play the first one is yellow and the second one Isa and as you can see they chose to use parachutes for one of the dances so here we go starting with yellow and then moving into VI [Music] you [Music] everything all [Music] to [Music] [Applause] I [Applause] [Music] l [Music] [Applause] that was fantastic so [Music] wish must way back to [Music] so this is some of the behind the scenes that happens um during performance and during The Residency itself you know kids are absent sometimes um and sometimes like they're absent for a whole week and the first day they make it back is the day of our performance right and so then we just get to jump in and work together as a team and
make it happen and we've had that happen quite a bit this time then we also unfortunately just had a student who had to go to the nurse and may have to go home so we had to do a little problem solving and saying hey who can take this part because he had kind of a very relevant important part and so another kid I was like okay I can step right on in so this is the problem solving that they do the flexibility that they show is absolutely amazing the next group that you're going to see has had many of those things that I just mentioned it's Miss House's class and Miss House's class they chose r as the style of music and we had a great time talking about Ray day as a musical form
and unity and peace and love connection to the Earth and groom so we we've had a lot of fun they chose two songs as well um because they're so creative they chose Bob Mar these three little birds and we know that many of you out there kids and adults alike know the words just three little birs because it's r classic so we invite you to sing along with it if you would like to their second song is called B by Sister Nancy it's a form of re called Dance Hall re and so they'll be doing both songs so here we go this house class three little birds you see a lot of bird movement and B come on out [Music] w [Applause] [Music] yes my [Music] we all world [Music] [Applause] [Music] mess [Music] [Applause]
[Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] all [Music] B [Music] lady and my [Music] [Applause] [Music] time [Music] [Applause] te [Applause] spread out spread out turn around face kn M House's class is seeing up here and they're going to be joined by M monto's class we give class out here and then I'll tell you what's gonna happen all right [Music] all right so here is a song that we do during the dance residency and we do this song to talk about movement in unison different positions with our body uh connecting to Rhythm This song is called sodio and it is a favorite of the the dancers in the dance residency and so we have two classes up here to show you I know that some of the fifth sixth seventh and eighth graders who are here have
done the dance residency with me you've done this song sodio if you remember it you can stand up right where you are and join us and do it with us also my third and fourth graders stand up and you can do it right here in your spot as well Mrs Mon's class is just as good at singing so you as they are at dancing so please feel free everyone to sing and dance to here we go [Music] [Applause] [Music] B [Music] [Applause] [Music] St [Applause] [Music] [Applause] yes [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] W from this house is you may [Music] e for CL is going to close the show the style of music that they chose to my great surprise and my great excitement was electronic music they chose the song around the
world by D PR fabulous song So in this dance as in many other dances small groups of dancers got together and they created choreography each member of the small group contributed choreography and they decided in what order they would put it in what level they would do it on what movement quality whether they would stay in one spot or loc so lots of decisions about choreography went into this and from what you can see they're ready to get started so I'm going to start the music here we go I love you oh Clara [Music] d [Music] w [Music] w one more [Music] let's try one more time one more water water family members thank you all for supporting your kiddos through this process teachers classmates thank you all for coming out today to support the
third and fourth graders we appreciate it so very much one round of applause for all of you one more announcement thank you to all of our teachers as we know it's going a very very very very easy year but if you guys could pause when you're at please we have an important announcement we want to celebrate our third graders for passing the third grade reading test and all proficiency was 61% of our C students were proficient in mathematics so much your all am am thank you everybody sh flowers
