the competition is going to start in just a couple minutes at this time all the competitors are seated um I would like to go ahead and introduce you to the officials who will be presiding over the comp um I have Mrs romanelli is going to be our pronouncer I have Mrs Curtis Mrs Dee and Mrs millish are going to be our judges thank you officials for coming and helping us out today with the spelling be today you're going to enjoy a great American tradition the format for the competition is that of a traditional spelldown that is each of the spellers you see here will receive one word per round so we're going to go ahead and talk about um all the work that you guys have put in to get to this point um you

guys were your class winners uh for each grade level so we have uh here sitting with us today uh representatives from the fifth the sixth the seventh and the eighth grade so that's quite an accomplishment within itself so congratulations for making it to this point um before we begin I'd like to spend just a moment talking about the microphone you guys are going to be using today uh the microphone is important because it assists you in ensuring that the judges hear your spelling when it's your turn to spell adjust the microphone if you need to so that you're able to speak into it um before you begin to spell speak the word you are given into the microphone for the judges to make sure that you've heard the word correctly does that make sense um

this will give the judges an opportunity to determine if you are pronouncing your word correctly when you are ready to begin spelling your word remember to take a deep breath annunciate each letter with care and speak directly into the microphone all right so let's talk about what happens at the end of the feed if all the spellers in a round misspell all spellers in that round will remain in the competition and a new spelling round begins okay so we have a judge that's going to be dinging a little bell if you misspell a word you're going to hear a little bell go off okay there you go so don't fret um you can uh you'll be out of that round at that point in time there are chairs in the back of the room if

you would like to stay and watch the rest of the competition um and then when it's down to the two uh the two remaining students um I'm GNA let Mrs romanelli take over from there in just a second but um I just want to say that just take a nice deep breath and make sure that you're spelling you know the word that you hear correctly and if you need to uh ask for other things Mrs romanelli is going to be uh talking about what that's going to be right now as far as as like definition sentence that kind of thing okay so I'm going to wish you luck right now at this point and I'm going to turn it over to Mrs romanelli yes they can see yes at the end of the round and

then they'll go yes thank you I just wanted to make sure if it does ding just go back to your seat sit and then at the end of the round then everybody leave that will um and go in back and sit when you're ready time okay um so yes my name is laor romanelli um the winner today will represent the Continental School in the PMA County Fe where four will qualify for the state we're going to start with a practice round and we are um and you're out after only one miss so the practice round you can make a mistaken you want to come to the microphone pH um and we recommend that you repeat the word so um I will repeat the word as often as you need me to um it is also

your responsibility to make sure that you have heard that that word correctly and it is also my responsibility that um that I understand that you have said it and you understand what word you are going to be spelling you uh can ask for a sentence and for a definition for clarification and if you ever watch a national spelling beat you will see that every time they go up to the microphone they will ask for the sentence they will ask for a definition it gives you some time gives you a a chance to relax and then make sure you have that that word in your head you can retrace but you may not change letters once you have started if um if you do not ask if the word is a homophone then either spelling is

accepted the bell will ring if the word is misspelled after you have finished so the rules will change when only two spellers remain and then we will get to that point we will go through those rules at that point are there any questions so then we will begin our round our first spell is R aritos say that right yeah okay broken b r o k e [Music] n um ahead Ian this word has a homonym or could be confused with another word [Music] solve s o l v e solve correct kinle barely okay bar that's weird barely b a r l e no y no interrup yeah let blaze this word has a homonym or could be confused with another word shall shall s h a l l Isabella Credit Credit c r e d
