conference so she again tried um she's been trying this week but they still haven't gotten back to us to see what our contract looks like so when we talk to um to the trust okay thank you when we talk to the trust um she said that would be the first thing that we needed to do to see if our contract ends this year that we're in good shape because we could develop a plan to move our policy over so um what it would be right now um it's $500 for the first year just to get started and it's 240 every year when we are currently paying ASP $ 4,332 yes does that include our no no no our annual membership an additional that's just document storage yes so that's that's policy services so that's the

maintaining of the of our policy sending us the updates sending us so the board dock for everything is house like we're looking board meetings and everything else that's an additional 2700 that would stay the same because that's what we paid but for policy Services when they're sending us this stack and telling us we have to review them and update them and then has to you know when they're lining out the items we pay $433 a year for that and our trust would do the same the trust would do the same thing for $240 a year and what be better it with the trust well the so the trust is the trust is smaller right so what happens is um we could continue to pay our annual membership dues of2 ,000 to Asda right if we

want but the I think the benefits of our membership is are the conferences the law conference the annual conference the bringing people together superintendents and board members the onboarding the HS um the trust is developing their own conference right now working on getting an annual conference together which I'm sure isn't going to cost you know 2,300 we paid $2,340 for just two or three of us to register to go to the conferences the reason because current events um not really current events I think in because of the recent events people have started to look into it more so but they have already been working with as an alternative with a couple of districts she said um there's um Santa Cruz Valley uses them now and um veale did they say veale is is in cor

there's a couple of schools that are already in I I talked to cesal who's our attorney and they said because they do recommend that policy that we still review it with our own attorney she's already rev the trust policies for another District so she's very familiar with what would have to happen but like I said she thinks it's they're okay yeah she she thinks that they're good % yeser yes I mean it' be a great way for us to save money so um and they support us anyway so um she said that there's um 13 districts right now that are um that are that they're supporting there's um and they're working with some that are transitioning in the screen in P County but she said we got to find out about our contract first so

I'm hoping that by this week we find if we want to hear from them we could always still move our stuff over and pay yeah I bet were probably well I've never I've never signed [Music] so I don't know that ifba still behind and they haven't gotten contract signed that could be the case too it like rolls over you know in our system and then we just just like when you get a membership with something so the good thing is is that you want to cancel it right now our policies that are in board dos through asba and for us there's policies better get going yes but in um the trust they have it down to 220 so in the course of years of all this stuff migrating and growing and changing where we obviously

asba hasn't done a very good job at eliminating policies they give us more and more and more and more and more do you think there's just a lot of redundancies in ASDA yes like and because there's regulations and there's exhibits and there's so a 660 page document would go down to 220 I found a redundancy on page five but we can still add like we would review what we would do is they break it down into chapters so there's five chapters which is pretty much how asba has but the first chapter is on boards um and administrative assistance like the in-house first one and two then there's business operations HR and students so they break it down and what we would do is go through the policies by chapter and we have a to bring

like let say chapter one to the board for review and then approval chapter two so that we could be up and running by July 1st so but anyway so with that in mind as we look at these policies um that are here for second read okay you'll see I went through them and if we'll just go Page by Page you can see that um on on page two um on policy advisory number 749 the school district Cy board is required to meet in January following the election we do that anyway so I just as I was going through it I was writing um notes once the evaluation instrument on the bottom for evaluation of superintendent is going to be recodified as cbie so we adopted I'm on page two of 55 on the bottom okay

okay so we adopted this evaluation system that the that Asda came up with in collaboration of Asa so what we would do is put this in for ducks under regulation okay page three has the language of approving the dyslexia trainer to have the trained person we have a first grade teacher being trained Miss Manis we're adding a second grade teacher originally Miss Roman Al was going to be as the literacy specialist she was going to be the dyslexia trained person on our staff and then they said that they it needed to be a K3 teacher so then she didn't pursue it who they said the state so the state said needed that it needed to be a teacher so then we had Miss Manis and we wanted to have two people so we're in the

second grade now you'll see that they're adding in the language that it has to be a reading Specialist or a reading literacy person this sounds like if you have a literacy coach or literacy specialist it satisfies the dyslexia training requirement so we don't need a separate dyslexia training person first they had said it had to be a K3 teacher so now they're adding that it can be the dyslexia person or I mean the reading specialist this is very poly yes because it sounds like just having them so Roman satisfy romanell would satisfy she would satisfy it but we already have a teacher who's almost trained and completed because they had originally said it needed to be a teacher and now they're adding that it can be your reading specialist which makes sense your reading coach

or your specialist should be the one leading the reading efforts in terms of the yes so that's why bunch of yes creating so unfunded mandates so that'll come up later on in the document so if we're on page five of 55 you can see what was added there was that um this is on the board member conflict of interest with states that the district is authorized to increase the time period for the Restriction to be more than two years which so it's third- party contractors before it had to be you couldn't contract them to work if they were part of the governing board and preceding two years you had to wait now it's saying as a board we could say we could elect that it has to be more than two years before they can

come if we want oh we can't we can change it to more than two years yes if we wanted to so Ken I don't know it's it's usually a result of somebody complaining that someone came on the board left and then wanted to come and do work with the district and you get board members who upset saying people left being part of the governing board because really the ultimate goal was to come in and directly stud what else Transportation [Music] I this is just like they added the language because somewhere it happened and had to clean it up but this is Grand yeah so I don't think that this is a big deal I would say okay because what they're doing is allowing us yeah we could change it if we want so that's why

it's very much okay on page six there was nothing that changed did you have any questions on it Laura okay then the board organizational meeting they you can see where they lined and took out the language so now it's saying because it used to say the meeting shall be held between January 1st and January 15th but there were times when January AR meetings weren't occurring within that time frame and they would happen sometime in January January yeah so now um it could be sometime in January and our meeting I put there is January 16th so we're fine it would be interesting what I want to see is what the model policy from the trust how they would write this right because we have access to get into the model policy and look at them so

all they really do is take the legislature and translate it into this document right and then they maintain it supposedly for the this whole thing on page nine of school board meetings this was that whole Fiasco of when Co and when you had standing room only in meetings and where they were having to relocate their meetings this says now that you don't have to relocate your meeting that you're not mandated to relocate your meeting yes yeah so this is saying no that you can keep your meetings where they were originally inter yes but we have one where I tried to hire the sheriff's department and after B their stuff and they didn't have anybody available didn't have anything was little wor we had I yeah they told us what we had to do the second

okay here is saying how you have to say what time the public can come so if you notice Na's already been doing that on our board agendas it says doors open at 4:45 or doors open at 5:45 so she's already been doing so that's 10 no changes um it says um Nali where is it and the last one I did except for this one except for this one she meant to have it on but wait the thing that I remember that said you don't have to put it on the agenda that doors are open at 430 yeah you said yes we do yes we do well after we do this then we will make sure but I was doing it yeah it's good thing we're about to break down I know see I know what

are we doing so same thing notification of board meetings I said we're already doing it it's on the agenda and we to the public so you just went through all the stuff yeah I went through all so I could and my on 14 also um it's the same thing on the fact that you can live stream and log in and we have technical technological devices and place could people to tune in um on 16 of 55 where say accom accommodations for the disabled so persons with a disability May request a reasonable accommodation such as a sign language interpreter so we just need to find out who our contact would be and add that to our policy because usually like asba each school has a person that you would call if we were to need a

sign language interpreter if we knew a parent needed but right now that we to our knowledge we don't have anyone that needs sign language interpretation so this would be like if a parent needs or a student that interet so I have a person we want to make her personal record or get an agreement with her so if we ever need it it's in place nice to have somebody nearby you see this right she's my wife's best friend is she affiliated with an agency she teaches at uh she used to teach at uh uh shell yeah she teach at Arizona school for the death now she's a bit push oh okay well all we would need her to do is to do a um a vendor agreement if she's not with an agency and then well

she works for sword and she doesn't do that okay can you put that down sh shly is death um interpr and then Weill what to do with that so she can get on the vendor list okay yes so if we ever needed that we'd have that on brought her into closing exp for oh okay good good she signed for Bill Clinton um 17 when it comes to um the contract they had this whole thing of if you're a first year superintendent and they eliminated all that because first year superintendent on different timeline so they took that off which is fine um and then where I put my contract again if the superintendent's contract with the school district is for a single year on or before May 15th of each year the board shall offer the

contract for next school year so we already know that have do emergencies this one States what they added is that emergency response plans developed by the governing board which truly redevelop them you approve them and adopt them um are required to address how the school and emergency responders will communicate with and provide assistance to students with disabilities so in talking with um Mr Nathan and with Mr fer Ferguson within our plan we do know and teachers know where the wheelchairs are what the procedures are we do um have headphones that we provide that um directors have and teachers have for the students who have um audio sensitivity but it's not stated that way in our plan but we're in the process of reviewing our EOP to make a bunch of updates to it anyway so

we'll make sure that that's addressed okay then oh this is this is new and this is a good thing that small school districts and substitute teachers so um sub if you're relative of a governing board member or a spouse or immediate family or someone in the same household um if you're a small District you can allow for them to sub and to tell your motherinlaw of which we are not anym correct we're not well we're we're we are still in the Ral small rural schools we lost we are at because what did I wonder it was 700 it says having only one school or fewer so do we have one school or do we have Elementary we have we're one school okay one school we're considered one school proper name is Continental Elementary SCH yes

so I think we could we'll be good have she's T Cody and this this is the whole basic instructional program is on the whole dyslexia mandate where you see literacy coach or literacy specialist so at least one kindergarten through third grade teacher literacy coach or literacy specialist in each school has received the training so um romanelli wanted to do it initially but when they said it had to be a k two teacher then we got this madness so we'll just end up with yeah and what what didn't make any sense is if you're helping to be in the meetings where identifying dyslexia you are not a classroom teacher because you're usually not part of all those meetings in terms of schoolwide organization of trying to figure out a system right which makes sense that the

literacy coach or the literacy specialist is the person that's designated on campus to help you think that'd be kind of their gig right well I just started and underl directive directed because where it says on dates of observance that the superintendent is directed to emphasize the use of the resources developed by the State Board of Education relating to Civics education which align with academic standards and social studies pursu it to this and this is the whole Civic instruction and teachers teaching the perception of the public that teachers are teaching whatever they want and that they're not using resources when they're talking about these days that are in observance so the superintendent is directed to emphasize so I will definitely be emphasizing to the teachers to use legit sources yes okay this goes back to again

the literacy coach and and it's interesting because if you look at ensure that honor before July 1st 2022 yeah hello but it hasn't changed the changes Le to coach are expected well that's what they're adding but of course they're saying not update your dates yeah well you're updating a policy but you didn't update the DAT yeah remember this is the state so maybe by next fall done and this admission of students in foster care so we comply with all of this it's not one thing that they did was shorten the timeline between the request of records and when students are being placed because what happens with Foster students we get the uh the sending school has to have a meeting with the receiving school and it takes time to coordinate like we've had you know

where okay they give us like two dates two times that we could be in the TW within the 24-hour window because they have to have the kids in school but a lot of schools drag their feet and they don't plan the meetings and then you have the case workers uhuh they're usually phone and video but so they're shortening because they're saying within five days because foster kids were taking longer than five days to get play in their receiving how many do we have a lot of kids here um definition of a lot I couldn't tell you right now what our number is but we get a lot of students who we had more this year Steve like our entering and exiting foster care meetings we've had what maybe four this year we haven't had as

many this year as we did last year we had a huge influx last year um I think we've had two this year but they didn't pan out if I remember right so a lot of times we spent meetings and then circumstances happen well because they're temporary placement so they could be with us for five days or six days and then they get placed permanently sometimes last year we had a lot last year we had people I don't know if Buster system came out and was trying to we felt very targeted yeah like they the quality of education kids too I learn you do that place for all all medic paid paid for their day paid for I mean everything my kid dinner yeah except for about you get more teenagers scho especially if there's a

uniformi and then we have um with homeless and foster care we title funds are separated to to pay for fees or or clubs or to help them anticipate okay so that Closter care there student discipline this whole one was remember how they had firsted that you could not suspend a kindergarten student um a kind through first grade now I'm on page 31 55 a school district charter school is exempt from having to meet the prescribed criteria for the suspension of a student in kindergarten or first through first through fourth grades if so they're adding if it's a weapon or if it is it's the total disruption of the classroom we have we followed du process and done what we've done that you can suspend them which is good because there were a lot of kids

that were really needing to be suspended ended and they they weren't because it said you couldn't yes [Music] us Ro if I can ask you a question on that is that effective when the board approves this or is it already affected it they're already they're already in effect but we haven't officially approved them to be on our board Ducks yeah I remember going to a asba session they talked about yeah kindergarten being able to suspend for an hour yeah that's currently how we're operating is that I cannot suspend out of school grades one now you can so we can okay we can uh and then the 35 through 55 has um the whole 10day limit where um you can only suspend special needs kids up to 10 days and then you have to have the

manifestation hearing um but this one is saying that you can the authority to suspend a student for up to 10 days after the informal hearing so it's with suspensions and exensions which work work good we haven't had when you look at 36 through 55 again it's that exemption through four so we're good Mr Nathan alternative to suspension so you can see we go through um um you know our whole process and restored practices and we have our discipline Matrix that we adhere to so I think turns tell you he's changed his ways too I'm experienc on page the whole thing on exposion goes back to Now 46 of 55 same thing where they're adding the language that you can for in fourth grade students and done is one more missing students um this is again

it used to say within five days but this is 10 days after enrolling to transfer student from a public school to private school the school will request directly from from the previous school because you can never get records especially with snail mail Within by days anymore so they increased it to 10 days because when we get audited because the policy says five days if they randomly select the child that enrolled and they look at when we received the paperwork we would get an audit finding if we didn't receive it within the five days even though you requested it on day one you guys heard of machines new fangled [Music] techology well a lot of them are like but there some kids have big files and so they I'm not even I I'm not even sure

what we we we are required to maintain Cube folder so we make copies and send those to the other school so all the stuff is the state legislature not the state school board makes up all this stuff right it sounds it's I know they they're involved obviously it's all gets the normal legislative process their interpret and yes so with that we will recess until 6 o' we don't yes unless you want to sneak in the meeting to hear this hold on I wanted to tell you CB i- valuation ustri so this just goes hand in hand with the policy that talked about superintendence evaluation so I wanted to give you this um to just refresh everybody's memory on what the process is but at at our board meeting we've been talking the last couple of

board meetings about our board board goals and we had decided that we're going to keep them the same correct so um we do not need to have the January 16th study session on establishing annual District goals because we have our goals our our district andard our board and District goals are the same um but what we can do if you look at the bottom where it says where we need informally to discuss progress made on goal attainment and receive feedback of overall performance the February board meeting is when we will have our Benchmark data presented so I think we should have a stud session um in March or we could do the stud session before the February meeting just to talk about some of the preliminary data that you will be seeing at that board

meeting that be good would that be okay okay so we could look at study session on on the 14th um yeah see oh it is spren n March 14th is spren grade our board meeting is scheduled for the 19th so it's wrong on the document March 19th is our board meeting no March 19 yes so we'll have a so we'll do a steady session on February 13th and that way we we can review preliminary data and then we can start to talk about my annual goals for the year if we want them to change change we we see that data February yeah so okay so I just wanted you to know that when you see this that it says that we're establishing District goals we're not doing that yet since we've already established that we're

keeping them the same okay all right now we can adjourn now that I know have okay welcome everybody welcome to the December 12th U covering board meeting this is a regular meeting thank you all see if we can get you all in and out I love all the C uniform sweaty foies I'm seeing so we just finished the study session we've done the P Pledge of Allegiance um so our next thing is to approve the agenda like P yes sir I is talking about buses can do that that we need a motion move approve the agenda I second Mrs Mrs Allen yes Mrs Le yes Mr yes Mr yes okay so with that call the public we have any calls the public on and with that we will have our superintendent's presentation so we need

to approve the minutes from our last meeting minut Mrs Leber Mr MCG yes Mrs Allan yes Mr as yes that officially in order called the public we don't have any we take us to item eight which is our superintendent Miss Rico good evening everyone Mr a president members of the board in our community and our amazing Colts have some highlights to share with all of you this evening okay for start ERS we always start out with our mission and our vision which is there our theme for the year is world of imagination because we are imagining all of us being rock stars and meeting all of our goals and working hard to have a successful year enrollment update so our current enrollment we have 637 students prek through 8th grade last year on the 100th

day we had 652 students which was the loss of 15 students okay so ADM is average daily membership do you remember when they used to say they used to count all present bodies that were in school on the 100 day they don't do that anymore it's the actual students that are enrolled and in attendance on the 100th day so when you look at budget implications so those the loss of the 15 students we get approximately $7,800 per student so that equates to 17,000 of deficit or loss for the lowered enrollment that we have so I wanted to share current class sizes you can see there prek K through 8th grade and the total number of students we have on the right you can see that our class sizes are smaller in Kinder we have 14

and 15 students in each classroom in first grade 16 through to 18 second grade 21 to 23 so you can see what that looks like so our enrollment is low across the board in all grade levels which we take pride in lower class sizes and we do want our classes to be small but we know that we need the way we increase our revenue is by increasing our student enrollment so we are going to start a new student K2 Roundup in January so we're going to have a couple of open houses in January Mrs Curtis is actually working on require for us to get it out so we need to start to Market and recruit incoming Kinder students and for sure um first and second graders as well our Middle School numbers are low but

it is harder to get new middle school students and have them acclimate well and and mix in with kids who have been here sometimes from preschool or kindergarten through 8th grade so um our recruiting and marketing efforts are going to be to try to catch them early and and young um in preschool we have 38 students not all of the students plan to come to Continental so we're going to be doing some Outreach and some work with the preschool parents as well to try to recruit them to come um to our school as kindergarteners so we're going to really be relying on our community and on our teachers and um our PTC to help us um increase our enrollment in K2 especially okay so it's a busy CH of year for jazz band Orchestra and

choir so there's um Orchestra shines at laada annually we pres um they play at laada we had jazz band Orchestra and choir at the Continental Plaza last week so a huge thank you to Mrs bti and Miss hatch for preparing our students to be out in our community okay um we continue to offer many additional opportunities for our students which were very proud of Adventures at MIM which is the museum the MIM Museum which is the musical instrument museum in phix so there's some pictures of our students there um our Green Valley band plays at Continental annually so you see them on the left they play for our entire School birthday books were celebrated thanks to VI the rotary so they come every semester and all the students who had a birthday from August to

um December get a pre book and then we'll do it again in second semester and our holiday house huge success I want to thank our PTC and our donors and you see our committee do I have any PTC moms here that helped out with holiday house please raise your hand yes we have our girls our B family they're part of the team thank you craer ballet and um Continental students had Le parts so we're super excited that we're able to offer that opportunity as well Continental Jazz students participated in a free we always like free joint um Jazz Clinic with saara middle school which was led by two son Jazz Institute musicians Scott black and Bryce Winston some of our students attended a summer camp um with them at Utterback this summer and uh we

want to thank Mrs bti for her continued work and Partnerships to get our students involved instruction and Leadership opportunities so we had um our first prek-8 writing sample professional learning communi so we had all of our teachers bring writing samples of their classrooms we had teachers look at the writing samples that were behind average and maybe a lower end writing sample from their grade level to talk about what we're going to to do schoolwide to increase our writing efforts at school so you can see all the teachers as we grow we had all our parro with us also our preschool the programmatic assistants with us so we were pretty tight in this room but it was a productive day um the chart on the bottom left is the parking lot for exit T tickets on

feedback and next steps so we're in the process of developing a plan for our writing efforts for second semester and planning in the summer for continued work in next fall also our Middle School um student advisory students participated in our cult time reviewing data binders um so as you know our students um have data binders where they're setting their goals they know where they are on our um NWA math assessments and they know what they're planning to do so it was pretty exciting to have our younger students show off their data binders to our older Middle School kids and our middle school students were asking great questions to the elementary students well why did you pick that goal or what are you going to do to improve in your goal so um It Was a

Good Day Celebrations we have Green Valley News and S the sun a19 readers pick so congratulations to our very own rock stars we have Miss Lefever there on the end who was uh recognized for best massage studio Mrs fny was recognized for best teacher and Mrs Flowers was the finalist for best teacher so we had the top two best teachers in all of ac19 readers nominated and I think that's phenomenal that two of our Continental teachers were were highlighted so we're very very proud okay student advisory benzell recognition and fourth grade kindness effort so again like I mentioned our student advisory students are very active in helping us with our Ben efforts they um at every meeting they vote on what staff member should receive the Ben's Bell and we compile and they write little

potit so we went in and gave Mrs Flowers her Ben's Bell for her recognition from student advisory and fourth grade has also really taken to Heart our kindness efforts and they have this kindness Rock Garden that you can see and they've painted a lot of our kindness DRS so that it just looks beautiful so I want to thank um fourth grade and Mrs house is here today from fourth grade so thank you climate surveys if you haven't completed your climate survey please do your voice matters we have 141 responses from parents and 347 from students and 34 from staff and we really do take your feedback to heart because I review it with the governing board and we use that feedback to make decisions for our school for next year and improve efforts of things

that our community members our parents and kids feel that we need to work on so there's a QR code so while you're sitting here you can you can um take a picture of the QR code and we've narrowed it down to 10 questions for parents which in the pass was 30 so we really did try to narrow it down this year parent Square um most of you may or may not be aware that we have the new e notification system last month when we recorded um we were not able to send um emails and Robo calls it was just text messages is that correct what was it it went through as a we we we started our roll out with text messages only we've now added email and roll call so we are sending notification

flyers and signage there for parents to download the mobile app of parents Square okay so we'll be um sending more information on that if you haven't downloaded the mobile app of parents Square you will be doing it soon because teachers will be helping to send information out check check your check check your emails you should have received uh instructions and information on the mobile app so um with school facilities board the pterodon two-way communication system that we use for the intercom and bell schedule was damaged Beyond repair during the last of Le power outage so we're working with school facilities board to get this covered um for us they have fast-tracked it so just so you know in the meantime we're using all radios all of the teachers have radios and we have a phone

paging system to communicate with staff while they're on campus but we don't have the general um intercom that we used to have so we're hoping that that will get rectified and updated soon Green Team recycling so we've been approached by two community members retired Educators who are willing to help with our Continental Recycling efforts so uh we brought together staff members our Garden Club sponsors our nature trail sponsor through the that's through the Arizona Game and Fish we have a Heritage grant that that helps us um fund the nature trail outside so we're combining efforts to develop a plan for next year so I just wanted parents to be aware that our plan is to bring back our recycling efforts in the classroom in terms of aluminum paper and plastic um two years ago we

had bought the blue recycling BS and miss vanning and the Builder cook kids were helping us collect it collect cans but she was taking them to Tucson to get recycled and then the place would close or was it open but we're super excited that we just received permission to use our big dumpster out in the front that says cardboard only they actually are going to allow all recyclable items so we want to continue that also we're going to continue our campus beautification efforts and um Greenhouse we need to get our Greenhouse up and running and we're going to take baby steps to start to implement that currently Builder Club is collecting recycling plastic caps for cancer patient patients children in Mexico so all of these plastic Lids to the water and the soda and to

the dish soap anything that's a plastic top if you send it with your students um we're sending them to Mexico because they are recycling and getting ready to help the cancer patients in to go so we're not only um recycling but we're also helping out students um who are ill tax credits and white elephant support so we recently sent out 350 tax credit letters to donors and my husband got his in the mail yesterday and said what is this from Continental so he received it as well um they're mailed out along with invitations to our sweetheart G so we continue to be extremely grateful to all of our tax credit donors for their support in Civics clubs Sports and tutorials um you've heard me
