001okay call to work five o'clock 52 let start with our Pledge of Allegiance please and we'll have our birthday girl some else iedge alance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liy and justice for all roll call please Mrs Le on Mrs Amaria here Mr mg here Mrs Allan here Mr rer here okay so with that we are gonna go into study session and you all are invited to come up to the table we are going to be talk talking about our board self- evaluation and [Music] Bs yes some pizza nobody ate it last time it's next to the red Bel of cupcakes Drew you're missing out on the pizza how can you have cupcake Hawai we actually we're

002celebrating Bru's birthday next Wednesday but she just hates red velvet so we bought other we have other cupcakes you know Greg was the bunny oh I see it's only regular cake with d on it thank you drew yeah okay Drew were you able to look at the the uh scan dock that nanii sent you I don't know if you have access to your and your driv I'm going to try give me a couple minutes I'll try and get it on my phone I emailed him the agenda and the okay that's fine but you can follow along but I just wanted you to have a copy of what we were discussing as yeah I think okay well it looks like after a little prodding that everybody has replied yeah we have all the responses so um

003um I thought we could just go through through them and kind of look them over and see and have a discussion about what everybody thought if there was I would say we might ask for any um right on time any concerns or comments y or who go so as I reviewed the response is I really feel that you know I'm and I said it before in our meetings how proud I am of our board and how we operate um talking about onboarding because I know it's hard to onboard new board members and um and discussions about change and and operation and just what do board members do and not do what's the goal so um what I'd like to do is go through them like we mentioned Stephen as we look at where there's the

00420% or where some of the time or never or don't know those are some of the ones that I think we can spend more time on as we go through okay but even the most of the time is still like a be plus very different yeah well and it's there's five of us do you know I mean so and I had some I know because I come across it like and that's and that's the purpose of doing this because then we clarify and we know what we need to work on it's like with teachers right if they if you're not clear then you're not going to know and we need to clear it out don't know till you don't know right and I don't want anybody to feel that because you don't know or because

005it's some of the time that it's a bad thing it just is going to guide our work in what we need to clarify Okay so so the first one policy governance and conduct and ethics we have 60% always 40% most of the time I voted most of the time because we very often discuss agenda items before right so not that it's a big deal but but it's still not the way us not going well the protocol though is and I have a problem with I don't know if that's what is that the the law or rules Robert Robert rules says you can't until you have first and a second you don't talk about but to me is make a motion to discuss it I know so I don't know if that's something down the road

006we can talk about you don't have to follow Robert's law we can make a policy that this is how we why have British dude exactly we can enact a policy that says this is how we want go over our agenda items because well I think we're voting to approve something before we have a discussion to even discuss it yeah so it's a motion to it's a a motion to approve approve whatever but then in the discussion I think that's where we can go back to say um I move to no we no we have to you vote it down and then you can vote you can vote an amendment to the motion well then you would say no when she would call her names out right no he you could be the one that says

007motion I move I want to discuss this first I move I second and then we discuss then you could say no or you can say I propose we modify then it starts all over again it's very but I think it's I think it's ridiculous too we're never going to do that because for have a united front so here's what a couple of other districts do I think we need to change our so I'm not suggesting we do this but here's what other districts do they have a meeting before the meeting and they have a study session and do exactly what we're talking about is they go through and discuss in a study session all the stuff on the agenda and then you know where we're at right so then then it goes boom boom go

008yes do I have a motion yes second yes discussion no so we do that like if there's controversial issues like when we were during coid school closure masking then we knew it was going to take a greater longer conversation but if it's a matter of semantics and that's why we send the agenda out ahead of time because if you have a question or concern or you're unclear about an item that's where you can email me and Greg or call naani and say have Roxana call me because I just want to clarify this then at that point what I would do is respond to you but then you'll notice that I'll send out an email to the rest of the staff I mean to the rest of the board this question has been raised because it's

009going to be informing the board so any question you guys ask me I will reply to all okay so just saying you know this was a question and just in case this is the clarification but then it wouldn't be a discussion right but that's what we want to avoid because up on the DI is not really the time to discuss you should have a good idea of what's going on and why we're we're doing it before you go into the meeting so if you think you're not sometimes it might be good to hear Kelly's idea right see and that's why I said I'm just we don't hear that ask we would what do you think of this idea what do you think that we all kind of had our input and then we came up

010with this master plan I feel like I don't get part of that Master planning anymore and I because that's not the role of Theus parent advisory and where I'm like I liked being part of knowing the pros and cons of the solutions rather than just bringing me a solution and approv this yeah I liked doing knowing this is the pros this is the cons this is why we did it this way and this rather than just bringing it to the board say this is what advisory or the staff or whatever came up with but and and that's where as a board member yeah and I see your question because you have to trust now that you know that we go through staff through parents through student advisory when we're making our decisions right and so

011whenever I do my board presentations or whenever items come up it's because of input that we've taken from our stakeholders but I get what you're saying because you used to be part of that and that was more of like uh bouncing ideas pros and cons this is happening should we move this this to there should we do this to and now you're on the other end of the governance you're bringing solution to us to improve but I'm like like you said I have to trust that you other committees already done their newe diligence yes there's other issues that we yeah and and and whenever we're in a meeting and you want to make a comment right of this is a good idea or where did this idea come from or I know that you do

012know I mean those are things or if you want to say um if you have a question on anything you just talk to me before the meeting because what we don't want to happen is for you to get here and start a you know start a discussion or a a diet you know conversation a dialogue about something take usally but you can stay and have pizza and we'll we'll run back how about going to the library thank you so good so that's that's a good that's a good what if because I don't think any of us really want to have an extra board meting but what if if you see you're getting questions that you think might warrant and you and I could talk about it and then maybe we just do a study session

013like we're doing now we so to come in an hour ear 30 minutes or whatever an hour early like we are now to discuss and discuss we're going to discuss agenda item 5 a does that work I like that and that's that's where you would go to Steve or to me or email us or email Nali and ccs and say I'd like to recommend that we have a little bit more time to discuss this prior to the new some might be fter that whatever it is you might say and then when we get up there it's automatically know that want pass you might say talking about right go and then but then it might be that simple then roxa can answer that Bo we're done we don't need that then there's other situations like the

014co thing or we had some other like when we're we were discussing hiring the uh um the math Specialists or the other specialist you know that was more of a discussion but I agree that the whole you're motioning something you're like is this really yeah I didn't discussion items like the reading of proposed policies and the second yes yes that's important because then we can have more time for disc because agenda items if you have them as a discussion on them then it gets postponed to the next meeting yeah and they're always at the end of the meeting the most important things your ad has kicked in me too yeah okay so that's the first one but I think in terms of conduct and ethics and talking about it's not how we say it it's

015not what we say it's how we say it and when we are professional and positive and asking a question versus more of like a you should know one thing I wanted to cover on this is um at the end of the meeting when we start asking questions to the principal and steveen them that's not okay so I think because what happens is if there's a specific question like during Mrs sas's presentation because it's an agendized item and it's up for discussion after her presentation we can ask questions but at the end it would be Miss amaras like I'm just like last month or whatever saying um could I get some information on where we are with the PSAT test and then we would say okay we write it down and we'd make sure to follow

016up with you the next or right because it's we're not supposed to call out the directors okay from the audience to answer questions and I know um I do that too sometimes if you ask me a question I don't know the answer and I know they do then I can defer and say Mr Nathan can you answer but so what would happen is ahead of time it would be great for you guys to send me questions that you have because then I can put the answers in my board report because that's real time information the superintendent's board report I can update it you know right before the meeting and put in additional questions that you might have but obviously if you call us on a Monday and let us know that would give us time

017to be able to put it in otherwise when you bring it up then we can respond to everybody else in general and add it you can say I'd like this item to be on the agenda I'd like to request that this item be considered as an agenda topic for next board meeting and then Steve and I will talk and we'll discuss whether it's something we could just send information out or does it actually need to be an item okay so that's okay um the board delegates all decisions regarding District Operations personnel management and procedures to the superintendent 80% always 20% most of the time this is the touchy one I think when we talk about regarding District Operations and Personnel because that's the superintendent's role and the superintendent recommends either approval or yeah we don't

018agree with what who you're recommending that's a discussion before the so we can only if you don't agree with the recommendation then you would pull that item but hopefully you would talk tell me ahead of time and we would have to have a a an executive session but when we talk about people we have to notice them and they have the right to be present so we're not supposed to talk about employees or specific teachers um outside of the recommendation to hire or luckily it doesn't happen for you right yeah but in that case like even when we have our meetings about my evaluation and my goals the human resources has to notice me that the governing board members are discussing me and I have an option I could either the all time or I

019could choose like I do to present and lead to let you talk but technically have the right to be there the whole entire time so I asked that one time we had that the coming back one her place back and like did we hire her did she go I didn't have any idea what ever happened with that Ian walking around on staff well that's where you would know if you looked because you approve all the hires and all the terminations and all the resignations so that's for you you were seeing the higher yes yes and something that big no yes sorry I'm okay I deviated here um for a specific in that was handled an executive session last year I understand why it came to us but I still don't think it should um I

020think we I think the way end up handing it was fine and I think we should always yeah and there's some things like you know that we can discuss um the thing with Continental because what happens is people we have so many teachers that you know have children here that are on the staff so it's it we have to weigh that but you're you're right because that would be something where you would just have to know we're handling it it's taken care of and we're moving on but is that the one that we just that she's talking about because if they if somebody emails all of us then it becomes that's that's different yeah yeah but yeah and if somebody emails all of you everybody did the right thing you defer it to me and

021then I take care of it and I just let you know that it's handled and we either sought legal or and we're lucky most districts get a lot of we thank goodness we well thank goodness that we don't well agree this one that says the board sets annual goals and keeps those goals at the Forefront of all board and District decisions throughout the year voted all always we have always most of the time some of the time never they're Anonymous okay well you don't have to yeah you don't have to come out but I just want to point out that we've done this once right but it's it's one out of one is still always suppos to be except for this is why I put we have our we have our goals that are aligned

022to our road map to success and that's why I have my slide that has our vision and our mission because those are our Collective vision and Mission but when you're talking that for ourselves unless we are using a much smaller time frame or like our district goals yeah because your District goals we revamped them we didn't change them remember we we voted to keep them in the Forefront but maybe we do need the sheet of the board goals on the Das for everybody at every meeting of the district goals have we set board goals yet for this year uhuh we kept up we kept the board goals stayed the same and we aligned our we tweaked our school goals based on the board goals because remember they were done so late yes because it was

023we did we did them later in the year so then we just updated the the dates and stuff because the actual measurable objective stayed the same okay V but we'll make sure we have that uh provides responsible School District governance there's the leadership Mission Vision and goals stop me if you want to discuss one but as I'm looking at set and communicate high expectations for student learning with clear goals and plans for meeting those and that's something that I'm very very proud of that we do have our eye on student achievement and that like I've mentioned the board has always been very supportive of our process for curriculum adoption and with our instructional coaches so that makes it clear that student learning is in the Forefront I I deviated there because I think we're doing

024a lot better now when I first came in as kind of like a fresh set of eyes my take on the communication from the board to you was always like oh no don't do that no don't do that but we were not telling you what we wanted to see you were just kind of stabs in the dark and getting corrected over it and like I said I think we're a lot better now but it's still something that you always have to be aware ofun especially when you said expectations um yeah and when we talk about like even our data wall and I'd like to take you all to go see that there's pictures in in Mrs sas's presentation but I think in the deliberateness to make sure that kids are not leaving here as eighth

025graders and us not knowing that academically they have been struggling since second or third grade when you look at our data W we've been able to identify kids that have gone through the multi-tier system of support to have discussions of where are we whether they're evaluating for gifted or special ed whether they're um elll Learners so I think that's really clear now and it's it's really nice to see the work that we've done in the last you know three to four years in that realm um the board and superintendent have Nally agreed which goals and expected performance indicators will be included in the superintendent's formal evaluation you all know we beat the the we beat the dead horse to death but we finally have a tool that I think is is good that we're all

026um inte agreement with so that was good um responsibility for self and structure some of the time most of the time don't know so this one responsibility for self and structure is just knowing your personal role as a board member that you individually it it were collectively you're one so in terms of bringing things to the table like said it has to be a collective effort in terms of how you operate yourself and how we are as a structure so the one thing I would suggest for every question in the future is there be maybe a couple sentences as to clarify what that means like what that means which I was a little on some of these here's what I think this is but no and I take it responsibility for yourself in the structure

027of knowing yeah knowing our roles knowing our role knowing how we operate knowing how just even that was there you think this yeah um board deliberations and actions are limited to board work not staff work so when we talked about what boards do and don't do I just want to show you in our book here in our chapters there were sections on what boards do and don't do which was very nice to read I have been experimenting with chat with the AI especially since I've been in all these sessions talking about school and AI so I looked at right the top five essential responsibilities for school governing board members and you'll see exactly what we what we've talked about and then in the back it was um what board members should not be respons responsible

028for so so I thought they that it was a good little cheat sheet and a reminder as I read them over right on what so when I joined six seven years ago something like this would have been golden and I because I thought oh well we do easy yeah I thought the pictures were really nice right Drew those pictures were nice the pictures and the graphs in the book were just amazing if you go back place yes and if you go back you can see like the purple commentaries and the summaries so it'll be great for you to beap okay let me see um create conditions districtwide for student and staff success 6040 always and most of the time board is given and reads the agenda and background material well in advance of the meetings

029and I think that that's our discussion before I think is good like if we start having study sessions I like your idea especially when we have to talk about the policies his idea session my idea was just change procedures I like it I vote for that doing study sessions and we can look at changing the procedures MH of the policy I mean we just need to agree how we want to do it policy I'm not sure during we had a meeting without a stud least on I know we had a lot that that was a different world but I mean there there's situations where you kind of have no choice but to have one in my mind yeah but I mean one of the reasons we changed the meetings to Tuesdays besides for Dr and

030I and Monday Night Football you're kidding no was to give people a chance more time more time to get it out Friday so you have it instead of Friday and you get the meetings Monday without you having you do homework on Sunday nights now you can just do it on Monday so our goal is to getting pretty good about Thursday night getting it out on Thursdays yeah we've we've been trying to get it out on Thursdays to give you Friday Saturday Sunday Monday and if you have questions you can send them to us Monday but the links always are we have to go back to the link on the I know the school page but she's been emailing you the agenda with the attachments yeah but you can't get into the attachments unless you go

031back to no she doesn't send the attach can I no so on the agenda um you can see like the items if you click in there but the thing is that you guys have to sign in to bardu because if you don't sign in and and you click on the item you won't be able to see it only board members are allowed to it just says unaccessible yeah doesn't even ask for an ID does it have sign you have to sign first and then access we might have instru I mean I do it myself I did it right away um board participates in inservice programs at Regional State and National levels we Steve has done good with um region and State uh now National it's just so expensive but they do have a national asba

032meeting conference that they every year it changes there was one in New Orleans last year and Nashville was the year before Senator I was just kidding I think but you know what I think that we really are a good board and I think that we need to go present our work and our growth and what we've done because we go to sessions and I have presented on board and superintendent relations and how we operate but I think it would be really great to have actual board members there to talk to other board members and um and I think we're worthy of putting together a presentation for next year so can we add that as a board goal wow do they have one in Anna Lulu ever I know yeah well look Di's right on she's

033gonna look at the next three years of Asda to see where we want to present okay but but I really do think when you hear some districts that have seven board members I think in Texas there's even some that have even more 10 to 12 board members I can't even imagine what a board meeting like that would look like oh I can I can tell you chairs flying at the El Paso Independent School District there chairs flying you know yes that board members SP each other split boards well at how big the as I think you you'd have to have an odd number of like 25 15 11 I know there's a couple is there that have three some of the smaller super small districts the in the in the in the reservations well in

034the reservations yeah yeah three yeah um so looking back at the standard for accountability and performance monitoring you know we try to present every board meeting data to inform I wasn't sure about that are we holding you accountable are holding ourselves accountable it it's all of us it's that whole accountability and performance monitoring are we monitoring our our district goals are we monitoring our school goals are we monitoring um performance data for students which when we present that Benchmark time um how kids are doing um I know um had a brief conversation on Mr Nathan remember how he was doing quarterly reports on discipline and then we moved into semester because our meetings were so long and then the disciplinary concerns quarterly were so minimal that it was hard to keep the students Anonymous when

035if you had one or two incidences and everybody knew what was going on so we had moved to semester so he's planning to present semester discipline data in December but at that time when you see the report because now we're using um Synergy to report we'll see what that report looks like and if you decide you know if we decide as a board that you we want to go back to quarter you we can okay um the board appropriates resources based on student achievement priorities so this is where we talked about like kind of like how we had our board retreat and talked about our financial state of the district and priorities but I think this goes back to prior to your time when we sat with teachers and staff and Greg had his list

036of what do we need and then we met to prioritize the projects in terms of curriculum infrastructure Furniture computers so that was all done before so we've been checking off items that we had prioritized at that time but this is where that change comes in and how do you catch people up right on the work that had been done prior to right when you change board members or Personnel the board supports reward consequences and recogn recognition systems to encourage levs staff student achievement I mean that is with our golden HHO Awards and with the efforts of the new year to pick off um teachers when you're thanking staff members and emailing them I think that really goes a long way for staff in terms of board support So Christmas holiday party for here is at

037my house on 8th December Friday bring them we're going to do uh we're gonna do he likes me used to we're gonna we're gonna do the pizza of it hopefully we're gonna do pizzas at potn and we're gonna have a ugly sweater contest December okayed to go to we're not going okay we decided not and we were just what's the real deal well Jacks nice can you I had to put all these SPS in see is it wood no well wood fire yeah yeah so that's the ex we have to stuck 1100 pound so on this one Rox the board supports reward consequences recognition system um what do what do your sta say um do they feel like they're recognized yes because I I can say that with experience I know that you over all

038the time over recognize yes we have our um our Sunshine committee where everybody pays Sunshine dues so we make sure to if people have a de in the family a birth or um you know we do that for birthdays we work really hard at um giving them cards and recognizing them and I do the little notes like the ones I give you um to the staff members so they I think they feel really supported um and what do you do for a student how do you guys so with Stud so with the students with our um assemblies that we have our Cult of the months and then having the students recognize honor rooll will do um first semester honor rooll and end of the school year honor roll um we did the whole assembly for

039growth for the kids all the kids who showed growth on NWA when we had EGS for everybody and we had what we did last year is all the toys that we had left over from the Salvation Army toy drive all the kids who showed growth were in a um we put their names in a hat and had a bunch of drawings and Raffles for them so um we want to do that assembly again in February and I'm going to be asking I did ask the foundation yesterday to help give us gift cards for the kids in increments of five 10 and $15 so that we could do that like as a prehype assembly for the state assessment so and that'll be for all the kids who maintained proficiency and who grew from one band to

040the other which will be separate from the whole growth model right because we had a lot of kids who demonstrated growth so Kelly has been talking about making the testing days fun you know have music have real Pizza brought in have my mom would do they would like if you weren't testing whatever like board games and music playing in the hallways and it was something that we instead they're like oh gone yes and that's what like with Holly when she did the welcome back chalk art you know that was really nice Stu like that did that and we we always do snacks like like parents you know how you've been asked to send in snacks and we make little snack things for the kids for break time um The Bu cold bucks to we give

041them in the morning so we'll we'll do some extra hype like that pump it up a couple M just to get kids excited about it can help can dress you up in the also in terms of recognition Kelly had an idea that we recognize the volunteer um of the month like we do our Golden Horseshoe so I did bring it up to the leadership team and we talked about starting the new year doing that and we don't want it to be the Golden Horseshoe we'll do some type of certificate but then all the people we recognize will be put in a raffle for drawing at our volunteer brunch for a grand priz we have some volunteers that really yes yes we do some that are here a lot all the time okay um the board

042and all stakeholders clearly understand and are held accountable for their roles and responsibilities in creating and supporting a culture of high expectations throughout the system um I'm not sure how we get to 5050 there's four responses oh that's oh so somebody didn't answer that one okay and high expectations throughout the school I would say it's not only academic high expectations I think its character Its Behavior it's you know overall absolutely that's part of our hold School District accountable for meeting student learning expectations yes advocacy and community relations I think this is 100% that's awesome um because I really do think in the roles that you all play in our community have been um vital and essential to talking up our school I mean I think on the days where people say we didn't even know

043Continental existed like you say that now and people are like oh yeah we know continental's in Green Valley because I think we're I think very visible tell me that when we go up for the B next well much I mean tone Jamie Jamie is our person Jamie so she is the one that um say person constructive tone is very and that's something like when they did the letter grade did you notice how they put us in with Sarita which which I was okay with because that was like Continental Urban were one school one District right and so they just added us to the bottom of their statistics but she did put in what I had said within that so some people still get confused when that happens because then they think we're part of saling

044well yeah I would if I didn't know right in theer Daily every time well you figure they're a bigger district and they have more schools like how much can we report on I know that sports team I mean yeah school stuff I wish they would report the just the sports stuff whatever like they've highlighted us a few times in terms of sports and how our kids are doing but they usually get recognized once they get to the high school which is I mean even in Tucson you know if you look at theirs on the da star in the Tucson C they let you guys write press releases yes she does and if and Lon sends her stuff about the sports she will put it I usually tell her like this is going on and she'll

045I would I some here you or your staff be the one to actually write the article and because that that paper star for Content yeah I mean it's gets thinner and thinner every week well I'll put that as one of the goals too for and I as we talk about um getting more information on in the newspaper okay I think like last year or two years ago I can't remember D has um Sor to put their tax credit stuff in the paper and really advertised it I mean probably a little too our advantage to but it was for their schools right you know I mean me they should do a whole thing because people still don't understand what it is like can they print oh my gosh we actually had our tax credit put into

046the paper the actual the actual like s they just tear it out I mean but they people need to understand they still don't we could all talk about and we somebody would get a different impression from each one of us be and the thing is the like they if you're going to put an advertisement in there for our school they charge you like when we do bucks yeah and it's expensive so sometimes I'm thinking okay yes yes okay good cool um okay let's see that's that's the all in all all in all yeah doing pretty darn good guys couple I'm sure would have been a better answer for [Music] meure okay would feel better what and what I wanted to look at is in the book when we talked about on chapter 10 that talked

047about dysfunctional teams and Rogue members and um the five dysfunctions of the team where they talk about the absence of trust versus trusting one another and that's one thing that I feel that you know we have to and we work on it even with our own School leadership team like we have to trust each other and assume good intentions and know that we have each other's backs right in terms of out in the community or you know and that's where I think following the protocol I'll bring it to the superintendent or have you talk to the principal you can always that can be your very first response well have you talked to the principal because that's where it starts right and so but really not feeding into it and just saying okay that's something I

048can look into it not even I'll look into it and you spoke into the principal right because you personally can't look into it right because either you're going to go to the principal or they are so really just just encouraging but I really think that trusting one another that fear of conflict that's the S of A Dysfunctional team is the fear of conflict as opposed to engaging in the conflict around ideas and I don't want anybody to ever feel that you can't come talk to me or you can't talk to Steve that we're not open to hear suggestions and ideas because that's what makes us a team right when we see different perspectives and that's the beauty of the different roles you all play in terms of providing feedback to our team lack of commitment

049right versus the to commit to decisions and plans of action so anytime anyone member of the team checks out and is not committed anymore it affects the team obviously avoidance of accountability and I think we all do a very good job at holding each other accountable and bringing the different lenses to our team um in attention to results which I don't think that's been any of us because we are results oriented and I try to present results as much as possible and even when Mrs guas and uh Mr Nathan are presenting their information and that final chapter is really looking at what is working right how well is it working and why does it matter so I think that's something that when you look at our survey and you look at how we're operating you

050know there's a lot of things that are working and I think things that are working well because we're getting the results that we that we have anticipated in terms of leadership for ourselves for our kids for our staff and why does it matter why does it matter why do you think it matters what all of our work and the evaluation kids productive in society and that's the bottom line it matters for our students and that's why you know I really wanted to put student pictures up here because this this is why we're here because we want our kids to know that they're loved and safe and that we're going to not let them fail and that we're going to intervene and we're going to notice and we're going to be here for them so have

051you guys had any um kids um like motivational speakers come in and talk to the kids about um I don't want to say just cheerleading each other on because right now I well that's really part of leader in me yeah where kids kid are and like this oh I tell yeah the kids helping each other out being polite we had her kindness efforts um and I'll mention it during my board report we had um on world kindness day we had Miss wattis in here kids are writing kindness notes they're putting up on the boards the be kind challenge that poster that's on the door the kids made kindness bracelets I got one on my desk I wonder what it saying says Mrs Rico I just I mean I'm not trying to to certain right situations

052but one of our students of the month children wore their shirts the next day of school and came home crying because kids thought she was showing up because she wor her shirt to school and I think that's that's broke my heart I I mean that these kids I don't know are they well it is that fine line of middle school trying to be that was kinderg yeah and so that's what yes and that's so sad you know that person has every right to be proud of their accomplishments and for their t-shirt to school and we should and that reminds me like that's a great idea because how do like it's good to know that because what do we do I think we on Fridays the blue CT shirts maybe you wear your student to on

053that day all kids have student of theth on that day yes so those so those are the kind of things that the feedback that we need to hear right for you to say hey I heard this or I saw this or because those are things that we want to look into and I'm not saying that it's a we have a bad school I just it's our society anymore that we forget to be about person and cheer somebody on well it goes back to if you're upset about something you're G to tell 10 people if something works well you may tell one right and we have to that build have each other's back and for kids to be proud of that yes and that's something yeah we could encourage all the kids at student of the

054month wear your shirt tomorrow and maybe Wednesdays is C of the month shirt day we them that's a good idea she was so proud that she got this t-shirt and then she comes home just heartbroken because everybody thought she was showing up because she wore it you know and I just if it was Junior if it was Junior High I'd understand it but would it was kidy Garten it's just heartbroken you know this our very first one you know she seen her family members get it before and she was just proud that it was her turn I again it good well thank you any talking that was parent to board member that was just parent to parent nobody came to me and asked me fix it yeah go fix it no it was just so

055in honor of national thank you letter writing day which you know is is today November 14th so have a little thank you Kelly and there you go backwards and yours was in your birthday card and Drew I have yours do you to read it it says Drew happy National thank you letter day I appreciate you thank you and let me pop it open and read and read your the message it says the world needs hundreds of thousands more people like you oh God I agree hey hey hey hey have n give this to Liam in a little envelope tomorrow put it on your fridge and you put it in your truck and you can [Music] remind thank you you're pocket full of awesome well thank you I apprciate it till we're going to go through

056some ad administrative stuff um our um superintendent's report and then we'll get to probably the main reason you're here besides the pizza that's in the back so so we're going to start with uh item number three is uh five actually approval of the minutes yeah they're Aller any discussion on the 17th minutes okay Mrs yes Mrs yes Mrs Allan yes Mr mg yes M and yes on to approving the October 25th special meeting minutes I move to approve the October 25th meting discussion Mrs Leber yes Mrs amaras yes Mr MCG yes Mrs Allen yes Mr yes next is the call to the public anybody on the phone so this is where you had any want to do address the board there's sheets in the back come back out a little sheet your name and stuff

057and you get couple minutes to with that we will move to the superintendent report good evening president AUST members of the board members of our community parents and amazing student Cults that I see out there in the audience um I will keep my presentation short and sweet so we can get to um mrs's amazing principal report that's going to have a little bit more detail this time so again just looking at our mission and our vision and knowing that we are building for the future learning cooperating and caring for all students and staff and our theme for the year is World of of imagination because we're imagining all the great things that we are going to continue to do to get better hey just a reminder that our board meeting live stream um has changed

058to YouTube so there's a link when you go to our website and you go to um District there's board meetings and you'll see the YouTube link and I think people were pretty pleased that you could hear um it better than it was in the past so you can always check out our meetings live stream if you're not here because they're so excited and we like to have people viewing we had a board retreat on November 1st to discuss the financial state of the district that I will be sharing with our staff as well and once we share it with staff we will send out to um our parents but we are I'm proud to announce that we are all in agreement that we require additional support in ours and maintenance um efforts here at school

059because we have one grounds and maintenance person and even with just of daily things that happen having to keep up the ground is extremely difficult for one person so we're in the process of um re receiving estimates from some of our noal landscaping companies to come help maintain it twice a month so we're super excited so you should be able to see a difference here um by December and January when we come back for the new year we are also doing exceptionally well with our new reading and math curriculum and we are going to focus on middle school curricul science curriculum for second semester um and as always we work to keep our teachers and staff salaries comparable to neighboring districts um which always poses a challenge with our limited budgets so we're currently analyzing

060our current budget to see if and what raises will be given to staff for this year so we don't give raises when school starts when they sign contracts we've been giving them in January updates latest and greatest so um we have some Community member support um to help us get our green team reignited with the plan for Earth Day working with our recycling efforts so we will be meeting with um this couple that we're very grateful for that's going to come meet with our science teacher our Garden Club um sponsors and working with Miss Banning on our recycling efforts but um they're things that we want to present for Earth Day this year so we'll be asking for all of parent and student help as well we had a great Veterans Day celebration that our

061Builders Club puts on and you can see picture there of some of our students on the left we had World kindness day was on Monday so thank you fourth grade teachers and Mrs swades you can see on the right um Mrs swes where are you I know she was here in our audience she's our special education director but she did a great job working with our students on on kindness notes for this week on kindness bracelets I even got one on my desk I was super excited and you can see the be kind challenge in the back where this students are pulling off little slips of random act of kindness and things that they can do to keep our kindness efforts going and our climate survey I hope you saw the QR code how many

062parents are parent pickup okay did you see our poster board with the QR code can you please scan it and be the first to do the survey and we did um make it 10 to 12 questions I believe for parents so don't be afraid because we know used to be 25 to 30 questions after meeting with parent advisory and looking at what we could do to get a more um to have more input from parents staff and um students we narrowed it down to 10 to 12 questions so please um take your climate surveys because I do share the results with our board members with our leadership team and we work hard to make sure that we're listening to all of our stakeholders and that we make changes based on um feedback that we get

063from everyone and the QR code is on the door so if you want to scan it on your way out that would be great too students will be taking it and teachers will be doing it as well and our goal is to have them completed by December 1st we'll look at what the responses are and we can always keep the window open if we need to hey parot Square New e notification system so we have transitioned from gabart to Parrot Square so some of you did receive the email today that said please check your email for important information but gabart we are not able to send emails right now only text messages with parents Square in the transition so we apologize for that but really we just wanted all all of our parents to know

064that we did do a lockdown drill today which was a practice lockdown drill so we didn't want kids to go home and tell their parents we have lock down and that it was a real one so it was a practice lockdown drill and we will make sure that we get that message out but we found out later this evening that the email was not going through just text messages okay um I attended today a professional preparation board meeting um and this is a a board that is by the U OFA it's by the University of Arizona College of Education um professional preparation board and we come together with teachers administrators to talk about the quality of Education across the state so the Hot Topic as you may all already know has been AI in our

065schools and in our workforces so we've had a lot of conversations on um Ai and school use and here's just a diagram that talks about the impacts of teaching and learning with AI and there's a AI guidance for schools for Tool kits so our teachers will also be learning more about Ai and its um positive effective uses right in the classroom um there's been a lot of conversation do you just block it but it's like blocking Google so we have to do prepare our kids and our teachers to use it effectively because it's there okay um just lastly a reminder about our mental Foundation mark your calendars for our sweetheart G is Saturday February 10th um tickets are $45 per person and we are still in need of sponsors and silent auction items so if

066you have any needs to people who are willing to sponsor the event or provide silent auction items please let us know and we are really hoping to get more parents um at the sweetart G it is going to be this year at the historic Canoa Ranch in um in Green Valley where it used to be at CAC so I heard that the Canoa Historical Park is really nice and it's been reap so hopefully we'll get more people there um so that concludes my report I just wanted also to remind everybody that today was um National thank you letter writing day so please make sure to continue to thank each other and kids um thank your parents for all of their hard work and making sure that you get to school every day ready to learn

067right and that you have what you need so again thank you and it's so good to see everyone today thank you with that we will move to our esteemed principal grab this walk well welcome and we'll go ahead and get started with the principal report so we just wanted to update you on some school data um our school letter grade the state testing scores have come out and our letter grade for our school has gone from an A to a b via the State Testing results from last spring State testing data has indicated that we still have to go in the areas of moving proficient students to highly proficient as well as continued great level cor growth from one year to the next in reviewing this year's first quarter benchmarks District Benchmark testing outcomes in

068our data digs with our great level teams we're seeing that there's a handful of middle school students who in the state test were at highly proficient that have dropped down past proficient into partially proficient ranges one of the conferences that will be held will be held with all middle schoolers on February 7th we will be meeting dividing and conquering as site leadership to meet with our middle schoolers who are doing Court folio binders and creating goals for themselves so those of you that have middle schoolers here they're going to be working on those they started them last year if you have seventh and eighth graders but we will be on February 7th having it's a half day of school so we'll be having meetings with them so they can show us their portfolios work that

069they're proud of and goals that they're setting for themselves as well as reviewing with us dips and Dives in grades and Benchmark testing will be discussed with our students cult time is what we call call it as well portfolio binder talks and presentations will be taking place on November 28th and for elementary on November 30th this is where elementary students K through have portfolios that they also share they get to share during the allotted 30 minutes of time to go over work that they've been wanting to Showcase to us they present to their peers to those of us that walk through and this time around we're going to be having some students walk through middle schoolers walk through in the elementary so our elementary students can showcase their work in taking elementary students with us

070into middle school so that they can see the work that's being done in Middle School grade level data digs in which collaborative professional learning communities take place have taken place in all grade levels K through e and we just finished our last one today with first grade this is a time when site leadership we as a site leaders get together with all of the teachers and we go over data and standard and where our students are how how they're doing and this is really important because I've heard a lot that there's some concerns that here at Continental we're worried that we are some are worried that we're just concerned with getting an a letter gr and I want to make it very clear to you all that we're concerned about doing our best to lead

071your students because we love your students and we care about them excelling and their needs and we don't want to fail your students so you know we can't get away from State Testing it's a state mandate for us and it's hard everybody wants to be an a that will come in time and it'll be a really great a letter gr but we got to make sure that we're doing what we need to do what's right by you for your children individually and specifically so we've been going over data of our students and we've been discussing next steps for employing interventions and enrichments based on student outcomes on a weekly by weekly basis based on the quarterly State mated grade level standards for Math and English language arts and we do not forget that we have

072science and we have social studies and a lot of other areas um throughout our school so just so you can see in the past few weeks we've been doing work if you can see we're very proud of all of the work you've been doing at home with your children and that our teachers have been hard work with as well and our site leaders the blues up there this is like a reading ball the blues represent um our students who are highly proficient at the during the district benchmarks and the greens those that are proficient schoolwide oranges partially and reds minimally and through the years I've had conversations with parents who have been very honest with me and have have told me that they don't particularly care for The Benchmark tests that we take and the

073state tests and we feel you we understand but what I really want to make clear and if you can help spread the word is yes those are things that are mandated that we have to do but we with all our hearts are looking at this data so we can help ensure that we are coming up with the plan so your children are ready for the next grade and these are talks that we've been having so I just want to show you some pictures of the work these are Middle School teachers you could go to the next slide they're collaborating um they're moving potit for mathematics into those levels as well having talks about what their next steps are going to be how they're going to modify their teaching and this has been huge for us

074as a team if you could go ahead and go to the next slide these are our kindergarten teachers we have our third grade teachers working and collaborating together and then if you could I you could cck on that so the link what the link is is it's forms that um our teachers have been it's okay we could probably show it to you all at another time but it's the forms that our teachers are filling out reflecting on individual students on all your individual students I'm a parent myself and my children I brought them to the school because I saw the fruits of the labor of the staff here and the teachers this is a wonderful place to be but as all parents right you don't want to hear what all have the other you might

075want to hear all the other kids are do but who do you care about the most your own your own children so that's what this work is so that they don't fall between the cracks so that they are recognized and we work together with you and it's not like that's the biggest thinge when we talk about State Testing you know we of course everybody would want to have this star grade right but to us that will come what's important is making sure that your students are headed in the right direction individual okay so we also have this I don't know if you're aware of it some of you might get calls and I don't want you to get scared if you get phone calls or you might say hey Miss quoss or reach talk to

076your teachers say I have some concerns with my children in either academically or behaviorally we have this tiered system this our teachers created over the span of three years this our governing board approved throughout the past five years and four many of these programs this is a specific diagram to the interventions we have here at Continental for academics and for Behavior tier one are all Universal for all students that all of our students get da but if you're thinking that your child might be struggling with some you know behaviors or academics or both we call have what's called an mtss meeting it's a meeting of the mind so we will call you if we ever have one of those and what it is is we come together with the teachers and with the coaches and

077site leadership and we come up with ideas and interventions that we can try a few weeks at a time if that doesn't work we go back and try maybe a few more if that doesn't work we go up into tier three where we do functional Behavior assessments where we do observations and we keep you in the loop throughout all of that and sometimes that might even lead to us as a team with the parents included as part of that team deciding if they they think it's time for a recommend time for recommendation to be made for an evaluation for possible special education services which goes back to all of those data digs because because now what our district approved five years ago was NWA Maps where it allows us to see where our teers are

078even at but we didn't have that before and will there always be gaps in in tests yeah kind you know some students are having an off day it might not always reflect what they can really do but that's we don't just look at that data from the test we look at how are they doing in class what does their work look like what can the parents you as families give us so I wanted to let you know know that there's a lot of stuff that we do here and I you need to be aware of it as well so that you can also advocate for your students if you feel that there's something going on and you're a part of this team so it's important for you to know what our school has so you

079can seek out those Services if you haven't been approached yet by any of us our district goals um one of the goals was establishing high expectations for increased student performance as measured by the state test which is aasa we our goal was to earn a letter grade by June 2025 and we were getting some calls already um with people concerned as to why we dropped from an A to a be and for some you know some parents may it have feelings of it doesn't a letter grade doesn't matter okay for us it matters to not so much what the letter grade and the outcome is what matters is that we're moving your children in the right direction so I wanted to make the point about the letter grade of our goal and then if you

080could go to the next slide these were our leadership goals if you could move we I want to explain this we initially received a b State letter gr last school year um based off of the 2122 state test scores and we we were able to appeal that b letter grade as we had saved a state data static file and had found the error in one of our English learner students outcomes they had shown high growth but their data had not been counted and we happened to have saved a file that was no longer they had wiped it out we had the file and we went through it to see because the fruits of everyone's labor you know it's like if you study for a very important test and your teacher gave you a b when

081you know you got 100% on it would you fight that or would you just take it so even though we knew when we were like Teeter tottering right here on the fence we thought this student did this amazing work and it wasn't recognized so our wonderful superintendent with the team site and District aill bu it to the Arizona State Board of Education and it bumped our B up to an a right there just bumped it we had met our district goal of reaching an a before the projected June 2025 date and we're working hard on collaborative professional learning communities with our teachers and when I say collaborative it means intentional Cooperative is when we're working together in a team but it's like okay who's going to make the copies for this who's going to run

082you know the homework packets for this collaborative is when we focus on our goal and what we're going to do so I just want to let all of you know all of you know that might be listening and if you can spread the word that I promise you we're not going to just keep working hard we're going to keep working hard to help our students grow academically but we will reach in a letter grade for those that are concerned about that and a high percentage a letter because of your support with your students and how you back us and all of the wonderful things you do to make sure that your students are continuously learning and just knowing that we that would provide a cushion from year to year it's a tricky calculation system we've

083had some calls about it um flu fluctuations happen and um for example such as not receiving two points a school could receive we received two points because we didn't have chronic absenteeism high as we had the year prior but something like losing two points can drop a letter grade that's Teeter tottering on the boorder and it and families might not know that um because when you think about the state tests if you're you might not know all of the little things that are part of those types of calculations uh testing dates so these are just as you see there's another concern of why does the school test our students so and so you know these are State mandated tests that we have to do so we have a winter benchmark test State yes require that

084districts have quarterly Benchmark Tes aella testing is for our English proficiency our English learner student Multistate alterate assessment Windows is for qualifying special education students as SI is a science test that opens in March it's for Fifth and eth grades State Testing third to eth District Benchmark testing will happen um April through May and an update for um that to let you all know that we are working here at Continental in the past we've partnered with sa the school district for PSAT testing for our eighth graders so this would be optional but we're working to have it done have it here at our district and um we will have update for that and it test Reading Writing and math sections and the purpose of the PSAT is so our eth and nth grade students know

085where they're headed where they're going and can set goals for themselves as they enter High School professional development work just wanted to let you know we've been working on um what plts our professional learning communities with our staff what is the difference between collaborative and Cooperative learning communities When We Gather in teams and also what Socratic seminars are so you might be hearing some of your middle schoolers and elementary elementary students coming home throughout the months to talk to you about a cratic seminar have you ever sat in school do you remember when they make this kind of sit and argue but like you're in a two circles an inner circle Outer Circle but this is around literature and articles it's a deep dive into deepening the knowledge that our students are are learning how

086to how to do how to do that with the various subjects that they learn and we had our staff this is them learning their profession professional Collaborative Learning communities discussing what is collaborative and Cooperative learning and a Socratic seminar which I just explained to you it helps critical thinking and this is the staff doing a Socratic seminar the teachers so that know we don't we don't want to expect our students to to do things we haven't tried and done ourselves so and then how many of you have heard of leader eny I should see some hands here so we have a leader in the staff Lighthouse teams and this is a presentation that took place um by Mr Vance and Mr Davis Middle School teachers to our staff as we roll it out and this

087is around our school some of the things happening around our school so we had Red Ribbon drug awareness week it was a middle school assembly with some activities uh family art and reading night thank you I saw many of you at that night and we thank you so much for coming to support and celebrate the work of your students of your children middle school math presentations on ratios and scales have been taking plays more than just sitting in Computing at their desks they're teaching each other and and um doing projects in math we have science projects on Adams as well partake did any of you make some of these or part you took you did some of those Adams work right did some of your parents help with that thank you for helping and then

088we have um our rotarians present to Third and fifth graders with dictionaries and the soures so hopefully you heard about that if you have third and fifth graders the community support we have is phenomenal we're very grateful for that and fall of Fall Festival fun we had a great turnout which we're so happy to see all of you out there and enjoying our school community and celebrating the many talents of our students thank you for coming out to that and thank you for your support always here if you need anything if you want to run anything past me to talk but I really do thank you for everything that you do every day for our students thank you if you would stay up there we have our speci recognition section the all right so if

100once you go through the proper procedures to get questions right I move to approve the district financial report I second okay any discussions Mrs LEF yes Mrs amaras yes Mr mg yes Mrs Allan yes Mr and new business business our landscape which is actually the grass in the uh fifth grade pot have a model and rendering um I don't have a rendering or model just here picture this take a lush green veneer and Dr over the couple of dirt piles that we have that we call playgrounds that's what it's going to like um so what we will be doing is if this is approved and I had her leave this up from from the board report um you can see what the cash balance is that we have in this fund we have just over

101$187,000 um this is the funds that we use or that we receive from renting out our facilities um the cell tower rental that comes in monthly that's where all this fund goes to um we can't use these funds on anything else but what we use for rentals so if we were like currently we rented you know we'll be renting the gym out to a volleyball club here shortly so we could use these funds to do some things within the gym um we could use it within the cafeteria that's where the church you know rents from so and since the church also uses our playgrounds this qualifies underneath for that um so what we have before you is a request to issue a purchase order for the amount of $74,400 um that'll cover 18,8 44 square

102feet of dirt with lovely Green Turf so I'm bringing that to you for your approval I move to approve um to issue the purchase order for the grass a second comment I have some questions um first of all it's under four4 a square fit um installed an 18 warranty yes 18e warranty is this is there like a playground quality Turf like is there a different grade there are different grades um I have received quotes up to $262,000 which is basically something that you would want to play an fo sure is this gonna this is well I guess they're issuing they're going to issue it an 18 your warranty and it is for playground so it is so is it coated with the stuff that doesn't get quite as hot so there's nothing really out there

103that's going to keep it from getting hot what we will be doing though is keeping the sprinkler system active Okay that way we can go ahead and and try if it begins to get hot we can go ahead and and throw the sprinklers on and cool it off and usually they'll put like a granular it'll have it'll be a sand it'll be a sand and sometimes they put this black I shred Tire yeah that helps absorb some of that yeah stuff the water out well the turf itself underneath is um there's holes underneath and it just lets everything drain through cool now we may also be looking in the future of actually buying a uh just some machine that'll puff it up keep it because Turf has a tendency to if it's been laying down

104for so long it has a memory and it remembers that it's supposed to lay down so and these machines they run about 900 bucks yeah I have yeah like and I just wanted to add that because of the initial quotes and then when this one came in at the 7 4,000 we were super excited because this leads us with enough funds to pay for the grounds and maintenance um maintenance that we want to have twice a month so we be able to get both okay please Mrs leer yes Mrs amaras yes Mr mcgiven Mr MCG think we me calling he was here sorry sorry guys that we have to split you guys up yeah okay good okay thank you Mrs Alan yes Mr Al yes all right so the M override has raised its head

105again after five years four whatever it was that um it's that time again in 2024 so what we are asking you guys to to do for us today is to approve us to begin the process of going for an override election in November 24th um this is just the beginning process you're going to have down the line you're going to have to have more votes to approve other things as we go along but this is just to get the process going um the maximum M override is 15% and we're currently at 14% so we would be asking you to increase that from the 14% to the 15% as well [Music] motions I move to approve the M over elction a second Greg is this like ones in the the past that the the impact to

106the taxpayer stays the same as it's been is your anticipation well I am not going to say that because we are going to ask for the increase of 1% so there would still be a slight impact and as long well you take that as well as well as property values contining to rise they you know the tax will see a greater increase to their to their tax burden because of that that's okay and the reason we're doing it in 24 for some reason in November 24 correct me if I'm wrong it does not pass I came years pass it missed by one we won't lose it so it'll have another chance 2025 corre correct okay thank you we are going out early for yeah Mrs leer yes Mrs yes yes Mr MCG yes Mrs Alan

107yes Mr yes next is the the whole bunch of events coming between now and end of the year and it's on here for two reasons just for informational and hope we get some uh tendance and number two is to let the public know that there is a possible quum of three or more board member present at one time which complies with the open meeting anything you wna no just want to apprciate everybody a great Thanksgiving next week we have Thanksgiving break and so we have a lot to be grateful and thankful for and everybody um we just want everybody relax and enjoy our teachers take a break come back fired up for December and the meia and that is just a discussion the next is we just our informational discussion you want to start with

109that I certainly wish at least s would do it from at least my family's point of view they don't do anything that LE anyways yes and the staff which we're all staff here um is going to be Friday the 8th at Friday the 8 Friday the 8th it's either 5 or six o'clock it so people can get their ear so it's going to be really Clos at my house those that you there last year so we're going to do be a little different uh I have a Christmas he's a teacher music teacher in Bale and he sings really good Christmas songs I mean you're going to thank Frank sra's there and he's also going to do karaoke and my industrial size wood fire pizza oven I hope we be done this weekend so we're going
