foreign [Music] call please Mrs amarillas here Mrs Ellen here Mr mcgibbon Mr Osterville yeah okay with that we need to elect um we're governing Court officers [Music] we'll start with the president we nominate Steve osterley Mr President um okay real cool this is Mrs Ellen yes Mr mcgibbon yes and next week Andy clerk um is next my mom my name is it's okay people this is do you expect yes Mrs amarillas yes Mrs Allen yes Mr mcgiven yes Mr yes thank you Miss Ellen congratulations yes yeah right between us two hands and bells don't be playing with my Gap perfect so with that we're going to break into a study session just to give you guys a little background as to really why um Roxanna and I were at the asba conference back in December

and we went to a couple really good session breakout sessions and it was really is well this book kind of sums it up this is one of the ones they recommended wasn't it um building great school board and superintendent teams so a lot of it is we're going to do start more lack of a better word leadership training but that's really isn't how to lead it's really is okay what is the school board really about right what is our function because I know when I came in I didn't have a clue you know and it's still you know people think we have different roles that well you know I'll just take care of that I'm a board member or I'm you know that's not really how it works um but I think some people will

do that and a lot of it will talk also we'll talk Maybe not today but you know how to be a cohesive team and have you know a cohesive vote a message from the quote board instead of me or you know I'll pick on myself so um that's kind of the reason of it we got really psyched up it was really it was actually pretty cool oh it's one of those moments where we're thinking why don't we think of that because we had been talking all year in terms of wanting to have individual board meetings with individual board members um as the president's superintended just to say what you know what what's going well what would you like to see more of or less of or how are you feeling what are your big rocks

and we just never were able to schedule those so I think this is a good way for us to start um we did order the books and of course they were supposed to be in before Christmas break and they didn't all come in they came in in separate orders so we received two and we're waiting for the others to come in um they're supposed to be in by the end of next week but nayani did send you an email that has the introduction in the first chapter um for you to kind of read and look at uh and and I like this because it was talking about a systemic approach to balancing roles abilities because a lot of times as board members you know what is our role what do we do with situations come

up um in terms of what superintendents and and what boards can actually do so I'm excited about this and what we'll do is we'll do a little book study so for our study session in February so what we need to do today is kind of look at I wanted for Miss amarillas for her to look at the board goals that we've established they're new because we didn't establish them until the summer but to get back on track in February we're supposed to identify board goals that go to the board agenda in March and then that drives my superintendent goals so since they're fairly new I don't anticipate that they're going to change that much but with Mrs Amadeus coming on board and then with a new board member we have time to tweak our goals

and have the discussions on what we want to do as a team so what I did um give and I'll give everybody a few minutes to review these are our three governing board goals that we established in the summer that our board approved you'll see on the back we have the Continental smart goals and these were the goals that were developed by the school based on governing board goals okay so I'll give you a chance to read those and then you have the Continental way roadmap to Excellence and this is the more detailed version that we shared with staff on how we meet our goals another game okay so we'll just take maybe five ten minutes for you to look at the to read the documents over and then we'll have a conversation because we

do um want to hear from each of you board members as to what you see um they also talked about desired goals like what what is it that use that your what is your desire for Continental Nutri now and May at the end of the school interview that we're starting a new school year okay so we'll give you maybe um 10 minutes amazing kids but thank you and it's a copyright incredibly your job is to keep me in my decisions she needed to go back to our office and members of the audience this is a study session so you can ask questions and give input as well okay so anybody that's here can chime in this is foreign students both for instance its um system is primarily this is the staff that's the staff going

to get requests so you'll see mainly like on the teaching practices on the roadmap to success on what we're expecting teachers to do in the classroom and then you get to weekly teacher expectations um four where it says have students track and reflect on their own learning growth that's where the data binders come into play that we initiated with this year did announce that since it is a study session you're welcome to give feedback or contribute or if you have any thoughts to share them as well and what you're reviewing is what's in our Google Docs that we've shared in the morning so while you're finishing how I read just something that I got from this book 10 questions every school board membership ask right and it it talks about um like in places like

China Singapore it's a central government Authority that controls everything including education where in the United States it's decentralized um and it says simply stated the local locally elected School Board is a uniquely American institution whose roots are found in the early citizen sphere of powerful central control in a very real sense the local school board is an expression of the federalism concept on which this nation's government was built up to have my classes sorry the concept suggests that governing power is best leveraged in the hands of people we're a member of the community as community members they are held accountable to those they represent and you need to be positioned to understand the wants and needs of the local populace um so being elected and working for free still we have a lot of responsibility

you know mainly to you know at the end of the day the kids here at the school that's when I boil it down that's pretty much sums it up you know it's you know we'll all disagree how we get to that but we can come into um you know so with that if you go to I want to start with this no no we can but you're not going to do well are we okay with you've had enough time to review the jobs okay yep so we're not going to do all 10 of these so I think we'll look at a couple and I'm able to throw them from time to time or once we dig into our assignment Mr Rico is going to get us so the purpose of a school board right we

kind of talked about most countries don't govern education the way we do um so we need to understand you know why it was put there in the first place because you know like if we lived in Texas you've got to take a semester or two of Texas history and I remember that we I don't know yes okay but there are some states that don't happen yeah um so it's you know kind of I guess it's uh I didn't really realize that that it's such a unique position that we have across the country in our role um even at you know our petite school if you will so let's just start with you we'll just you got 30 seconds what's the purpose of the school board just a high level well obviously the board members are

have the authority to hire a buyer the superintendent and that's primarily you know the who the boy can hire or fire is fully your superintendent I feel that it is also to ensure that we are budgeting appropriately spending money that board members are aware during board meetings we work hard to be transparent so that board members who are elected officials when you're out in the community and you hear people make a lot of assumptions that you have the knowledge and the background to say no I know for a fact that this is why we do what we do right you know we hold true to our mission and our vision statement and everything that we do um is in support of our mission statement and our vision statement and I think really just being able

to listen and to bring back the feedback again referring parties to the superintendent or to the principal to to go through those channels one other thing is when I look at do you prioritize leadership development I think we're all lifelong Learners I think leadership training is critical to my role to the principal's role to the director's role even to the board role so that we can make sure that we are being true effective leaders and that we do acquire the skills the patience the knowledge to truly lead our students and our staff and our community in the right direction I think we'll just go down the line so yeah it really is is to just kind of focus on what our vision is right building for the future learning cooperating caring for all it's outside

that scope then it's outside our job um you know you mentioned hiring and firing you know thank you drew for your history of doing doing that and let's hope we don't have to do that for a very long time did not have that on my resume I'd be okay with that um but as you guys know we did spend a lot of time on on well our roadmap and the our goals which then trickle down into the superintendent's roles and then it's the superintendent's job really is to do that implementation by using the dianas of the world Etc who you know like but um but you know and when we're out on the street you know you I'm just speaking from my experience you know I don't get caught on a lot saying well let's

go there what education are you doing you guys aren't teaching that critical race to everything are you every once in a while the the biggest thing is just refer to Roxanna at the end of the day because you never know when they're going to call a press even here um so that's that's the last thing for one of somebody inappropriate to misinterpret what you might have said um Ruth just you know we don't have many parents that come up to us and say well you know why does Johnny have so much homework or why does this go on over there that's I guess in the past they did not anymore yeah yeah right right but um so we'll just kind of do that and then we'll walk through the continent away and are just to

review our goals what is your desire for between now and me when you just think about one big rock or one desire that you have really is to keep improving in the academics and of course the character because a lot of these kids this is all they have three kids um I can go backwards a little bit um the big rock and I have it noted in here I think what just kind of can Encompass everything it was something Mr Lathan said for I heard him say several years ago that really stuck with me was we're just trying to produce good citizens and that means they know how to communicate with each other they know how to ask questions they know how to learn they know how to contribute to society um it stuck with

me and it's something I've kind of Taken on as a parent I'm not raising my kids I'm raising citizens of this world they're going to have to survive out there they're going to have to contribute um so I I think that's the biggest rock that I can think of um I think good academic rigor falls under that um and just creating curious people so they do always learn for the rest of their life um fundamentally but I believe the purpose of the school board is is that to um you know the fundamentals of American government every pretty much every level of government um is built with checks and balances we're here to provide checks and balance to you um we're here to represent um people without high-level degrees in education kind of bring in a

Layman's perspective at least that's what I tell myself to justify myself being here um and um a way that our our community can have some control and effect on what our kids are doing but most of their Waking Life good thank you and it's interesting and I was at a meeting this morning at the U of A and they had a gal from Virginia talking about social emotional learning and you know a whole conversation about what is social emotional learning and why do we use it form and talking about in the workforce in the real world you know what's lacking our people's ability to collaborate to cooperate to listen to each other to take somebody's idea and respect it and grow on that and that's truly um you know a lot of it talked about

people who go and adopt social emotional learning curriculum well yes you can focus solely on that and that the academic piece go by the wayside but it has to be a balance and they're talking about how do you systemically keep teaching academic standards yet when you do project-based learning when you are motivating kids to work together and do Hands-On projects you are teaching all those skills cooperation listening taking turns being respectful so it's not something new you know we talked about when we did the Seven Pillars of character or building good character and there was a huge movement on character building 20 years ago and you had people saying well I don't want you to teach my kids character skills because we're going to do it at home on our own but we're building and

modeling when you talk about that we're modeling professionalism we're modeling the exact skills that we want our kids to acquire we want them to be able to listen to collaborate to cooperate to respect each other's opinions to be able to respectfully agree to disagree when needed to um but to to have open minds right to be able to solve problems so I'm glad that you mentioned that piece of that academic rigor because it's all intertwined and it's something it's not something separate good thanks well I think the purpose of the school board I think logistically we talk about that was our superintendent and making sure that you're steering the ship in the correct direction that's it but I I want to focus a little bit on what you just said about the ringer because I

think that's one of the reasons I wanted to be part of it is too many times in public education it seems to be in my personal opinion that there's there's not a lot of rigor and and it's extremely difficult in a public school because you've got different levels rigor for one student is completely different for you know something's tough for this student maybe a piece of cake for that one so it's incredibly difficult I get that but that's that's what make this makes this country great is that to push everybody I'd rather I'd rather push kids to to to do higher and better and have them maybe not reach that but at least they're stretching to reach that because I think in my opinion there's too much of just sort of being satisfied with them

the status quo in in overall in public education um I think that's where the board can come in we can take strengths and that each one of us have from our different backgrounds whatever they may be whether whether it could be something with the grounds or the buses or the or hiring and firing or finances or whatever it may be we each kind of contribute a piece of the pie and that's what makes a board that should make us reward successful because you're each contributing something if you're all contributing the same thing then you're just going to sit there and fight all the time I mean if you all have the same strengths if we're all Financial Geniuses or whatever so I think that's what makes it more successful in my mind is that you

have to you have to know what piece of that pie that you can help with and yeah and you're right it's not you don't have that's not your assignment you don't have to do just that but that kind of can be your focus and maybe that's where you can contribute the most because there's certainly things that I can't contribute in I should learn about it um but maybe these guys can you know that right where I can't they can't so that's why I think the benefit of report is and I've I've experienced education in other countries and yeah it's definitely different here um but I think we're very blessed as a society to have sort of input from a board rather than having some top-down approach where yeah it just fits for everybody and just

make it work um I've been a part of that in other countries and it's it's not to me it seems completely counterproductive the media just sort of you kind of put people where you think they're going to fit and hope for the best and I think um you're right Mr attention in terms of when we talk about trusting each other I mean I'm thinking about physical when I came okay maybe we're identified as a school the school adequate progress in reading and math and the changes we had to make to get to where we are now out of school Improvement status with special education I couldn't have done it if you wouldn't have trusted me in terms of who we hired how we changed the model of how Pericles were working as students they were

being pulled out they were in a classroom working at their own level and we needed to get our special ed kids integrated into the classrooms we needed to work with our teachers to give them the skills to better accommodate them and work with them and push them or we wouldn't be sitting here saying we're out of school improvement with our special needs students because they did not progress and it took time right but we have to trust the process too because we know some of these changes were painful and Mr Nathan remembers conversations that we had and with teachers and with psychologists and with Council counselors and even kids trying to build them up to say you're going to be okay in this classroom because we're going to take care of you and we're going

to give you the help that you need to be able to understand content you can differentiate the way it's taught you can get the same content at a different reading level for kids to still receive the state standards that they need and as you know it was it's it's a tremendous success to achievement a rating but keeping it is even perfect so if you don't have rigor you're not going to keep it very long so you have to you have to sort of continually approve even if it's just that much you have to continually try to improve on what you've you did the day before or the semester before and that typed into again the motivation that we're talking about also and with um a lot of the kids today in my training was talking

about how do we motivate kids because we do have kids but once they get to the top they kind of feel like they can slack off right and not give it their all right you don't understand what it means to do well like we're telling the kids now you have to do well on this Benchmark and show what you know because we will intervene so we don't want to intervene at the inappropriate level right if you're just um so it's pulling all that data together to say we know that either this was just a fluke in the test because we know this is your ability and this is what you need or truly let's identify what you need to give but we have to work at keeping kids motivated to want to do better so

that they don't have that status quo you know I'm okay where I'm at mine is ditto to Whitney Center and you know academic rigor for me is is very important and also the um say the orderly learning environment the um I like that PBIS is being implemented here and um and I think that our purpose is to support you Roxanna and continuing um to um help our students succeed academically and that we continue with the a rating because it is harder to to maintain and um and you know and I think that our our role is also to be the voice of the students the parents teachers in the community well I think back with Andrew said too we have including Roxanna we all come from different places different backgrounds different job sets different everything

which I think is really going to help us succeed and I do have to say that I like some of the stuff that Mr Layton has been doing here who maintain a safe and orderly environment yes and we're doing more than what other school districts are doing in the um in our regular board meeting we are going to be sharing a little bit more on um our climate surveys but we will do a thorough a more thorough conversation in February once we get a little bit more responses but I'll speak to that with the statement or the environment of how kids and staff are feeling it because it is definitely apparent that kids feel safe parents feel that their kids are safe and you know we take that very serious very students anything from the

audience any thoughts excited with the roadmap and how things are going and the support that we've had the beliefs in it from our teachers and our staff our parents and from our students because they're slowly starting to hear all of the things that we're working towards with the goals that we're working towards we're very proud of them and you'll get a chance to see them a little bit some of the work that they're doing as well we've also talked about how covid you know really gave parents uh it was eye-opening for parents and grandparents that were having to support their children in regular coursework um because it is hard and the standards are difficult and it's you know teachers are trained for a reason to teach these typical Concepts because kid and parents you know

we're we're not taught to teach our kids at that level and even teachers struggled to teach their kids I think even Mrs Cuevas that she was going through two different grade levels with her daughters and try being the principal but also being responsible for their learning online and um that gave her a good true perspective and ability to to understand our parents that had questions and were struggling and to also give teachers ideas on how to mainstream it and keep it simple right so that everybody could be successful and not be completely stressed out because we had parents who came in meltdowns and grandparents and we just reassured them it's okay you know I never came in I was too busy melting down it's not but you know you're not gonna ruin your child you

know you're spending quality time understanding what they're doing and just stay the course with us and it's going to be going to be okay back to the aid rating when we were in parent advisory you were giving us the stats on what the percentage was that you had discussed with the teachers and I talked to a couple of the teachers I'm just out about the stuff they felt confident with the the goals you set for them to send for the students so I I'd like to hear that as teachers were like yeah we can do this that they had the confidence in your team that you you're going to help them make their goals so I mean that was comforting as a parent seeing what they were yeah they screenshot they could make that goal

right you made it a goal that was in their mind something that they did reach right because when we State ten percent of the kids when you break it down and look at your classroom data you know two kids three kids and you know where they are academically can you help those to help those children not that you're going to ignore everybody else right these are so being very strategic and helping teachers understand their data and breaking it down and then you did a good job with that I mean from the couple that I had talked to that they I felt they felt confident that they understood what they needed to do to help get that 10 increase good yes that's good to know good to hear we like to hear the good things too

yeah it's like the second bullet on goal number one right ensuring resources are available you know is to help all of everybody get those resources um you know like we don't know how to use them but we're not educated and trained to do that but um you know our you know like at my company you know we have certain people do certain things because that's what they're trained and that's what they're good at right so you know let's enable you know you to be the superintendent and help you enable the enemy the principle and then you know it rolls down from that and in terms of you know we didn't used to have a monitor you know so we had we hired Mr Curtis three years ago and um so that's another thing with the

board on ensuring we have the resources they get here um it's important and it's we're grateful that when we say we need something for this reason and the rationale that you respect what we're saying and know that we do you know we are fiscally responsible and we do need this we're in a unique situation also with our playground monitors because I've never heard of a district or a school where playground monitors are willing to come in and just monitor the playground for two hours a day like we and and we have people who are willing to do that for us ourselves and teachers had to do that yeah teachers were having to do it or you had to have full-time Bearer Pros that were being pulled out and it's just I think it's it's so

nice that you get fresh you know they come in they're excited they're willing to work two three hours a day um and and it's it's a nice model but it's something we have we're in a unique situation where we are still able to do things like this to meet the needs of the kids and the teachers yeah because teachers their planning time and like a lunch break yes In Peace So with this book building great School Board superintendent teams so when they come in we'll just read the first two chapters we'll have a study session in February so that we can look at our board goals and say do we want to tweak them do we want to change them um you know what do we want to do and then we can talk about

the first two chapters in the book okay and it's it's a pretty easy read with bullets and so we're we're excited and I love book studies sure I'm sorry this is somebody else but you get to log into a book today [Music] yes yes we could even have book club outside off campus sometime maybe when we celebrate that we finish the book and our audience here our directors could see whether we're actually implementing what we're learning as we go along right so in a couple of minutes um some students are going to come in and show us their um so we'll take a break if you want to take a break into the restroom and our students will come in and get ready to show you their data finders and then they can start the

regular meeting at so in the next couple weeks we'll get you guys to come in one by one since we don't want to have a violate the open meeting law it's just to come into the three of us for an hour or so yes are some of the students here already two two okay oh yeah that's an advantage of Atlanta right yeah probably to remember opportunity [Music] okay [Music] thank you so yeah under your skin foreign so those that are here for culture of the month please register over here at the table if you haven't already so with that we're we're in a study session so out of that we are going into agenda item number five approval of religion I'll move different the agenda's written [Music] Mrs Allen yes Mr Astrid yes and with

that we'll go to six to approve the minutes from the last meeting on December 5th 2022. I moved to Improvement is from December 5th 22. oh second any discussion okay okay yes Mrs Allen yes Mr ostrich yes any anybody on the line so with that is we didn't get any requests for calling public so we will move on to item eight which is the superintendent's uh recognition and then right after that we move into the cult of the month so okay good evening members of the governing board and welcome Mrs Amadeus to your first board meeting welcome thank you thank you I don't have too much to report me that we are going to have a curriculum update where we're going to be sharing more specific information on curriculum and most of the time I

covered that during my presentation but um happy New Year everyone happy New Year 2023 our third graders released Balloons with their 2023 goals which was pretty exciting do we have any third graders in the audience that release their balloons and their goals pretty being hot also just a reminder I always um talk about choosing your word of the year to set a goal and something that you'd like to work on so you can go on to Pinterest and figure out and talk to your Stu to your children about what their goal is for the year and where is that they're choosing and my word is elevate so last year it was intentional and it's kind of nice to have that Mantra in your mind as you're working towards accomplishing things and staying focused so this

year it's Elevate because I plan to elevate our game here at school in my personal life in my professional life and to make sure that we are staying focused and that we're all up in our game especially since we did receive that a letter grade I think we say we have it now we need to work on maintaining it right so we're all going to elevate together again our vision and mission statement everything that we do um supports our mission statement and we've talked about having a contest to see if anybody can memorize our mission statement or our vision statement do we have any students in the room who know our vision statement you guys want to read it all together let's look at our vision statement together ready one two three building for the

future learning cooperating and caring for all so when you're in your classrooms that's our vision that's what teachers are working towards and what you should all be working towards as well along with our mission mission statement to provide a community environment in which all individuals are challenged to achieve excellence in academics character and life skills yeah okay climate surveys we really need parents and teachers and more students to do our climate surveys there's a link on the website and I believe teachers have also put them on their um their Google what is it called on their on their Google classrooms um in December we had 52 parent surveys and we sent out another robocall and now we have 64 student surveys we're at 302 they stayed the same staff surveys were at 28 now there's

04335. so we are really encouraging everyone to please fill out your surveys we use the feedback for planning and preparation and making Necessary changes for school Improvement so we really want to hear from our parents our staff and our students so far as I'm looking at some of the highlights 39 of our students and 34 of our parents feel that they're receiving above average education here at mental 41 and 47 said average so um that's that's good when you look at above average and average but again we're going to elevate and we really want parents and kids to feel that they're receiving quality rigorous education here at our school so next month in February we'll have more specific feedback to The Climate surveys we're going to leave them open up until the end of the

month okay and again it's official our Continental letter grade of an a our appeal was granted we had an amazing assembly um we had our very own little band there that was awesome our cheerleaders you see our students there that are holding um candy canes that said I'm a proud proud Cult of an a school and thank you to the Madera church for supplying us with over 700 candy canes 800 Canada Ms nayali worked hard to put the little tags on them so thank you to parents who came and students you deserve a great big round of applause for doing that hard work to get us to our aim on the show or was it the Continental Health we had this little mischievous L for hanging out around campus um before Christmas break and um

of course since we are working at being respectful and responsible and duct taped to the wall in the cafeteria along with the Grinch and The Helpers that helped Mrs Rico make sure that the elf was under control and ready to come back with the good attitude for the new year projects that were completed during winter break you'll see there our Continental peace reading Garden which is funded by our Via Verde rotary we are also going to be using wet elephant grant money that we receive to get our library going of books on being a good friend friendship books being kind we also had a matching ground through rotary so they're going to be putting pots there we're getting a peace pole that will be put out there and we will be doing um a ceremony

at the February I haven't set the date yet but we'll make sure to let you know when we can come celebrate our Peace Garden that's outside of Middle School okay in the area there um and speaking of that there's a lot of weeds in that area and we're trying to coordinate a clean up day to get parents and students and staff members rotary members um the Madera church members are going to come help us clean up that whole area some of you might remember a couple years ago when we worked on the rain Garden project but it's a lot of work for just one person so we're looking at January 22nd to have that cleanup day so that we can make sure that that area is nice and cleaned prior to our dedication of the

Peace we also had the preschool um concrete was laid in that area so it was funded by the preschool child care student Child Care stabilization Grant so we're also going to be getting more shade in the preschool plot as well congratulations to Mr Lathan Mr Nathan was born in as an official Arizona ranger on January 3rd so it was there were some of us Cults there to support him so congratulations foreign he has notified us that he is no longer going to be um a member of our board but we'd like to thank him for his service and contribution to Continental we wish him well his resignation date was official last Friday so I did speak to Mr Dustin Williams who is the state um in the county superintendent so what they will do is

up the class and materials it is a pleasure to have Sabrina in class congratulations to the middle school teacher if we're able to have our Cult of the month students come up here so we can take a quick picture from them [Music] I'm very proud of you quotes of the months students to prepare for a picture I would also like to mention that it is governing board appreciation month so if you can help me also give our governing board a great big round of applause foreign our board members on our website every week so um Mr mcgibbons it's your most seasoned board member we will feature you first okay so stay tuned so you can read about Mr maybe I've been first on our website next week keep going okay one two three minutes you

take a minute break so well everybody memories um all right with that we will move on to our Student Services report brought to you by the 101 Stephen Lane thank you [Music] secretary welcome governing board uh Miss Rico asked me for to give a report over first semester and also in there to kind of cover the things that I do prepared a six hour presentation for you so I hope thank you enjoy it right okay six minutes we can do that um some of the goals that we had at the beginning of the year a lot of this presentation some of the board members have seen before Miss Rico asked me to kind of go over some of the um Ruth for you specifically since you join us halfway through the school year our goal

is to have students who are ready to learn students who are respectful to adults and each other students who are happy to be at school teachers who are excited to be teaching the curriculum and teachers who spend minimal time on behavioral issues next slide what is PBIS PBIS is positive behavior interventions and support um PBIS is really designed to be proactive rather than reactive so instead of focusing on the bad behavior or the discipline issues rewarding the positive behavior which entices everyone to behave that way within our school rules PBS teaches routines and procedures to reduce the possibility of student misbehavior Continental School has three school rules that we really focus on so every single interaction that I have with students through the classroom we really focus on being kind safe and responsible as well

as Mr Square boss throughout the day but also all of our teachers and all of our staff no matter what setting that you are within the school we really focus on all of the rules so if I'm in the classroom their roles are designed around being kind safe and responsible so everything in their classroom falls back to those three school rules if I'm in a school-wide assembly be kind safe and responsible falls back to those same school rules so whatever the rules are for that setting always fall back to the three game bees and so teaching expected behaviors you're okay cover that um it really goes back to I do we do you do setting that example we do that at the beginning of the school year so we actually in the first three days

of school have assemblies in each one of the settings that I kind of talked about so walking on the sidewalks walking in the hallways what does that look like um what does it look like in the classroom what does it look like in a school at assembly we also go to the playgrounds in the cafeteria and we have the kids travel around and we have one of our great staff members located in each area and they cover the be kind safe and responsible for each one of those settings and so if that just helps with being consistent school-wide so that's why PBIS isn't just designed for one classroom it's a school-wide theory that works great all across the board next slide please acknowledgments all staff should demonstrate more positive interactions and negative interactions so this

is you know seeing the good in people what they're doing and recognizing that the recommended ratio is a five to one in favor of positive interactions positive interactions include praise for students exhibiting um expected behaviors credits for academic success catching students doing the right thing instead of catching them doing not the right thing which sometimes is easier to do it's actually harder for most of our staff and it does take training time and practice to focus on the positive behavior and so we really focus on that in our staff trainings as well as just throughout the school year in our formal practice um and then of course we have regular school-wide celebration of positive behavior as you do you just watched this exhibit today with our quote of the month here at Continental School we

have what's called coldbox it's a monetary system where if a student's caught being good any of our staff members have the ability to give them a quote book in which later on at the end of the month they have the opportunity to exchange that for a prize Paul passes from the Middle School we were having a issue about four years ago just before covid with students wanting to constantly go to the bathroom go to the bathroom and so we came up with this incentive to keep them in the classroom and so for the month each of our middle schoolers at the first of the month receives a card there's 14 little horses down there the card itself is the 15th punch and so we encourage them to use no to be out of the class

no more than 15 times in a month during a class to go to the bathroom so what we were seeing is there was certain kids that would go every single period would ask the teacher to go to the bathroom because they don't know that they just went to the bathroom 10 minutes ago in the previous class and so what this did is really limited down on that and then with middle schoolers we realize that the little toys of trinkets weren't incentivizing them at all and so we've gotten gift cards to like McDonald's and we've gotten talkies and those sorts of things which have really taken off the last couple of years and I saw kiddo today when we were passing out the new cards that had like six of these cards saved up from last

year and they're saving for bigger prizes because they can and they had all their punches for all of those in there which means they have missed zero time academic time going to the bathroom and they're doing it in the five minute transition that they have from class to class and that's exactly what it was designed to do so it's great to see that um talked a little bit about that because I've only been given six minutes we're gonna move on past that one okay cool Buck rewards we talked about that as well we've actually it says up there on the fourth Friday we've changed that to the fourth Wednesday because it works a little bit better for our parent volunteers that come in and that's our early release day and we find that when we

give elementary kids Trinkets and toys that make noise sending them back to class for their teacher for the rest of the day a full school day doesn't load well so we send it home on early release Wednesdays through their parents okay um discipline correction system uh we will we will respond to problem behavior only in ways that maintain the safety well-being and dignity of the child a primary focus of responses for problem behavior um is the instruction of the expected Behavior so if there's something negative we teach the positive and so that's all of our staff does that um Miss paws our school counselor I'm going to talk about her a lot throughout my presentation today in Little Bits but kids that are really having a hard time and you know the repeated Behavior her

and I will work together and and work with those students to teach the expected Behavior because a lot of times that's what's missing is they just don't know how to behave or they're focused more on getting the negative attention than the positive attention once you help them realize how awesome positive attention is they'll seek that more often um this is something that we hand out at the beginning of the school year um to all of our staff it's the disappointed procedural flow chart it just kind of helps our staff know what should be managed in the classroom or on the playground versus what should be sent to the office and it helps with that mandatory reporting stuff that we have to there's some things that we have to report to law enforcement there's some stuff

we have to report to the Department of Education and so this procedural flow chart helps greatly with that um consequences typical consequences are a loss of part of recess for elementary students much attention for middle school students natural consequences should be used as much as possible such as cleaning up messes written apology making up this class time and reteaching expected behaviors we use what's called check-in checkout here often times when we have students that are really struggling with those repeated behaviors that I talked about earlier this is where Mrs Falls myself Mrs kravos and sometimes some of our other staff will help and will put a child where they'll have receive a piece of paper but it really depends on the kiddo because some don't want to carry a paper so because we have Chromebooks

we've made an online version that they can have that and their teacher at the end of each period or the end of each subject if they're in elementary school has the ability to give them real data right there about how they did and it encourages the student reminds them um but in the beginning of the morning they'll meet with the person that's put over the checking checkout system and receive a pep talk you've got this you can do this yeah I know you can you're going to have a great day and it's all positive it's really focused on it's not you know yesterday you had x amount of marks and you can't do this because the reverse of that is you can totally do this focus on this if you get frustrated ask your teacher

for a little break those types of things to encourage the child and then at the end of the day they'll meet with that same adult and they'll ask how did you do how did today go and that's intended to only usually we see it's beneficial in about six weeks is we'll see that change in that student and most times we can wean them off of that program of something new that we started a couple years ago I think now miss Rico I think about two years ago I was right in the middle of coven um where I went to a conference and learned a lot about restorative practices and we were really really interested in that because the typical was called the traditional consequences such as in-school suspension out of school suspension it's not really

beneficial because a lot of kids now would rather be at home because Mom and Dad are both working and so they can be at home and play video games and watch TV and kids would ask me hey can you just suspend me um and so that's not what we want to do and so we've looked at some alternative ways to make a difference in their life of positive change so they can be contributing members of society and so the purpose of restorative practice is to help the students recognize the impact of their actions have had on others and instill the desire to change for the better restorative practices are designed to have a minimal impact on the students educational outcomes so that's really something that we really focus on a lot of those things that

we have in our tool belt are restorative conferences this is where often if I have two students with conflict we'll bring them in together I'll talk to them except really find their stories and I help them find that common ground and get them to talk about it and almost almost without fail 99 of the time the students at the end recognize the other person's feelings and apologies flow freely and their shaking hands are even sometimes hugging and walking out holding hands going back to class and so that's the objective of a restorative conference restorative PowerPoints is something that we also use this works really well with our older students where let's say if I plagiarize I would do a PowerPoint presentation on the effects my actions have been and plagiarizing plagiarism and what that can

do for me long term in the negative effect or positive effect however that works um whatever the assignment was or whatever the offense was off and so we do that a lot with our specifically our middle schoolers but we do have done this down to fourth grade I mean we found that that really really with some of our middle schoolers has changed their lives whether doing that research sitting down with myself Mr Curtis Mrs cuevos um and if the occasion permits uh Ryan England or SRO sometimes if it's on that boundary of the legal issues he'll sit down and help the kids look up state laws and stuff and and so they can see the long-term effects of their actions that it could have on their lives so super super beneficial altered school day we

found that if you suspend a kid very rarely do they come back with their work completed we find that when you do in-school suspension their work only gets completed if one of our staff gives them full attention all day long which isn't always manageable and able to do to sit there with them obviously they're supervised so there's a difference between supervising and sitting next to them doing work all day so we've on the alternate school day works like this the student would check into the front office meet with me or Mrs Cuevas in the morning we'd have a conversation kind of have talk you can do this the teachers know that they'll be coming to the class we'll escort them to the class and then instead of transitioning with the other students they'll leave five

minutes prior to the Bell they'll go to their next class so they're not transitioning with their peers and so they're not missing out on the classroom instruction at all and their work is being completed like it always would be and then during the recess time lunch time and the enrichment classes they're up here working with Deputy England Mr Curtis myself and they're doing one of the restorative PowerPoints for whatever they did for that but for those actions I mean so we've kind of combined those two and we find that that's way way better and way way more beneficial than in-school suspension or after school suspension checked and checked out I talked about already um and then Behavior contracts are all of you familiar with what a behavior contract I know we've talked about that before

in the Years probably have written many in your life as well um one-on-one small group meetings with the counselor so that again this is one with Miss Paws where she will do a lot of that stuff for us so she'll meet with the students one-on-one I will also do that depending on the situation as well so I've got a group of kiddos that I'm currently working on with an anti-bullying campaign lessons and so you know those are just different things that we'll do in small groups or one-on-one you can be next slide one of the big things that I've supported that's in our reflection room we have on the wall is that ABCDs of fixing a problem a student needs to admit that they've done something wrong be sorry crack the problem and then the

fourth one D don't do it again and so that's something that doesn't just work with kids but us as adults too right so it's one of those things a life lesson for them and it's super beneficial and easy for them to understand first semester disciplinary reports we're going to talk about numbers a little bit here the Continental staff is using Synergy to report in fractions that's our our database that the school uses for our grading systems for just about everything we do here is ran through Synergy our odrs is office discipline referrals um and then we have minor referrals so remember that flow chart that I talked about earlier if it was in the teacher handled column that would be in your minor and then if it comes over here to the odr that would

be an office discipline referrals um so we have 71 total infractions are reported for K8 um I want to just put my little caveat here 781 seems low but remember that's incidences there could have been six kids involved in one incident right so that's just to be clear on that because I want to say total with students were up to like 168 but there's only actually 71 incidences but more than one child can be involved um 51 minors um 20 majors and then we have eight students that receive 12 days of in school suspension okay two students received five days of out of school and that's combined that's not two students receive five there's five days total issue but we leave it very big so that we can't identify who's who in the numbers um

six students received 14 altered school days and you'll see this as a switch right before we did restorative practices we didn't have that option so this option right here with altered school day would have been landed up in here somewhere but because we have this ability if it's kind of in that gray area we have the ability to keep them in class and learning but still have consequences for their actions um and then 48 restorative practices presentations this is huge um and I'll be honest it's way bigger than I ever imagined and it's because we had a little bit of a computer hacking situation um happened right before um Christmas break we were able to identify the students that violated their technology use agreement and so we talked about what that looks like when you

hack a firewall or anything like that to get around security systems and why they're there for their safety and so we had Mr Ferguson left the room and I want to say um 28 students did a PowerPoint presentation on that and then presented that to each other so they presented to their peers as well as staff okay so that gives an approximately 90 of our students are being kind safe and responsible so I know these numbers don't always look great but when you look at that we have 700 students um it just shy of 700 students on our campus we're doing very very well overall uh Miss Rico asked me also to talk about disciplinary repeated concerns things that we're really worried about here as Administration is its parent right because a lot of us

even in the administration we have kiddos here on campus and things that are reoccurring that we're always talking to our staff and our students about um obviously if you saw from the numbers the first one would be minor classroom disruptions right they just get in the way of their learning so talking to your friend while the teacher is presenting those types of things foul language is a big thing all throughout our society today and it's a challenge constantly especially in our Middle School not as much in elementary school it exists a little bit there but it's it's a big problem in middle school and on our school buses we took action once again in first semester and we didn't like what we were seeing and hearing even on our we'd watch the video cameras and

we would hear language that was not suitable to be spoken around five-year-olds that are also right in the same class and so we took our eighth graders that generally have the privilege we explained an assembly that it's a right to ride in the back of the bus and they lost that privilege for a quarter and were moved to the middle section and we're told that if their language improved they'd get a move back and they did get a move back at the beginning of this semester because we did see an improvement on their language and so we've we're doing things like that constantly just trying to protect the innocence of our little ones and keep the foul language out of our schools um racial slurs goes right with that we treat those the same um

minor acts of aggression violation of Technology use agreement is one of those ones like I said we had that big incident um with lots and then harassment and continued bullying as well so those are kind of um this Rico asked me what would be those main things that I battle every day and that would be my my list the other thing that I as a director of student services along with Mrs Abel who's in the room with us today that we cover the Ells the English language Learners we have attended two conferences so far this year the first one is the hell meeting in September this resulted in some changes happen with Ells and so quite drastic changes seem to be always happening it's really hard it's always a moving Target when it comes to

our ell students as far as what the expectation and the requirements from the state are so we adjusted students schedules to accommodating state requirements which required Mrs Eva moving some things around to make this schedule work for Mrs Abel so thank you so much for your patience and your dedication to the students and we know from last year that was a huge deal because it helped us get the a that we have from all the hard work and the time that you put in with those kiddos so thank you for your continued support and work in that area um then recently just in December we attended the OLS conference um that was at Star Pass um and so I miss Abel always has to drag me there because I get stuck in all the administrative

ones where they just talk Jada in numbers for the entire State and she gets to go learn how to have fun and do really awesome cool activities with their students but we went and did that and that was a three-day conference here in Tucson that we invented uh School Safety and Security um as you all know this is like my bread butter I love school safety I think if a kid can't feel safe and comfortable in school then they can't learn to the best of their ability and so we have to continue to create an environment that is both safe and friendly and that's challenging to do sometimes drive people like oh fast we can lock down fences and guard towers and kids won't feel comfortable in that and so it's finding that balance where

we keep them safe but they don't notice all the things that we have around them to keep them safe so some of the things that we've been working on this year is a threat assessment team we have created that team I know at the beginning of the board we just presented that I did to you um so we do have that team and we're really glad to now have a school psychologist that is a part of that team because that's a huge component that we were missing that we didn't have so once again thank you school board for approving that position that we were able to add that person to our team as well as all of your other duties and assignments as far as threat assessment adoption we've been looking into lots of different

things we were kind of set on an Ohio method which was really good and then Pima County heard what we were doing and they're actually looking for a Pima County adoption so we've kind of Pumped the brakes a little bit Mr Fergus and I are part of a task force created by the sheriff for Pima County and we are meeting again this month to continue to look they were looking at the mosaic model which is based out of California which is kind of a commercialized model but it has some good data sharing and just last week we received an email that that is now tabled again because the Pima County Sheriff's Department is going to be working with Dustin Williams to specifically look at creating one that is a shared database within Pima County similar

questions would be on that threat assessment um Mr Ferguson can you remind me what the name of the college that they're still in that the one that they're looking at Pima County right now Virginia's Tech the Virginia Tech model so there's several different models out there they're all very similar in questions and just to remind you what that threat assessment it's the look at what is the threat as far as a student to a school safety of a school and also to themselves and so this is how we reduce things like suicide this is how we reduce cutting this is how we reduce school shooting stabbings those sorts of things throughout education and so that's something that law enforcement and educators are starting to work together finally over all these years to try to create

so if you want to learn more about that you're in the audience feel free to make an appointment we can talk all day long about that kind of stuff so um we also continue to Target Harmony by training and doing drills for the staff and students such as bus evacuations fire drills and lockdown drills and so we we're super proud of our transportation director just completed our first semester worth of drills right before we went on break for our bus evacuation all right now to the fun stuff first quarter Sports we had volleyball 39 athletes per second flag football we had 32 athletes which is almost double of what we had last year for football so we're really excited to see that growth in our football program cross country had 18 Athletes with a total

of 89 athletes participating in the first quarter next slide um our accomplishments flag football received the sportsmanship award and the third place trophy um I know I presented this before before but you would have thought they won the Super Bowl uh because it's been a long drought if you will as far as our football team goes um where in the past five years they have only won three games total so to go from only winning three games in five years to winning six games and making it into tournament and then going and vegan some teams that they thought were unbeatable was quite the accomplishment for those boys and they were going crazy trying to throw water on us coaches and it was a really really good time so and then um to be able to

not only show that that Improvement but be nominated by all the other teams and coaches as being the Sportsmans of that season that's pretty impressive to to show that um competitive Spirit but yeah be recognized for meetings and then cross country Mrs cooler was our head coach there and you're just to her and her athletes also received the sportsmanship award second quarter Sports we had boys basketball with 29 athletes girls soccer with 26 athletes cheerleaders with a record high ever at Continental School of 35 athletes and what was awesome about that is they all stayed so sometimes we'll see a big influx and then after a week or two of realizing that sports are hard and challenging a lot of them dwindle they were able to keep those numbers up that entire quarter which was

fantastic and they were able to participate in some trades and as you saw some of our assemblies it was really great to have that um back here you know after a couple years ago and not feeling that Continental Spirit to have that so and then we ended up with a total of 90 athletes per second second quarter accomplishments girls soccer plays fourth in the tournament so they didn't make it to tournament Unfortunately they went against some really tough teams with Emily Gray uh Sarita and Anza Trail um but we were able to present there and at least challenge the other teams that we went against um boys basketball also received a sportsmanship award so we're super proud of them for their account and that she's over there hitting enter over and over again um that

means we hit the end of my presentation I just want to again thank you all for your time um I didn't go quite six hours but a little over six minutes so um I appreciate it and I just I feel very very privileged to be able to work here with the staff that we work with our admin team our teachers um my word for the year is plus and it's not necessarily a plus but I know that what we've put in place we um Mr mcgiven you talked about um the rigor and I honestly feel like we're just starting to hit our stride into the rigor category and our plans and our roadmap take as far past that we're just getting on the road and I know that with the work that our superintendent or

principal have done and all of our Specialists that we're just getting started as far as that goes um I'm not worried at all I can say this confidently I'm not worried at all about keeping our age because we barely got it and we all know in our hearts and in our minds okay we're better than that and we're just going to keep going um uphill so that's why my word for the year is Plus for the month that we need to recognize that we failed to get her up here so she is coming okay so sorry if you'd love me to deviate from our agenda [Music] thank you okay all right Preschool teachers write Bernadette is always doing what she should be doing and helps remind her classmates as well congratulations Bernadette foreign agenda and

uh just somewhere else this is kind of where there's a oh a dozen or so different little minor items that we have proven pretty much all at once so then we can do discussion after we have two options foreign discussion Mrs no yes you asked him I had questions yes Mrs Allen yes as well new business section number a curriculum update [Music] who made our new board member Mrs Amadeus up to speed and our meteor check on curriculum we wanted to provide a curriculum update so our admin team everybody has a part so they will all come up to the front please so that you can be ready to present your heart thank you can go by yourself or is your team going to be teams no int presented by administrative team and curriculum support

team they are yeah all right so we're gonna go over we'll start with Ela in our new curriculum for English language arts Benchmark Advance year one rollout currently grades K through fifth are are instructing with Benchmark events curriculum this curriculum is composed to reading comprehension fluency and what's super exciting writing standards we're very excited about that in the past Ela program we didn't come with the component component of writing which would start the foundations of writing from kindergarten all the way through and we're excited because it has this in this curriculum so we thank you for approving that for us social studies and science components are also intertwined within the curriculum they're not to replace the standards but they support the standards that are being taught that we need by this date teachers have had

two in-person curriculum trainings with a great response our trainer her name is Ashley and she is amazing and we hope that we are able to bring her back soon she really answered a lot of questions for us and clarifying A lot of stuff especially once the Year got started and the teachers were diving into the new curriculum students are also responding well to the curriculum and are able to articulate their learning as you're starting to see if you ever have the opportunity to come and do Cult of the cold time walks we'd love to have you here because you can start seeing especially the writing components a lot of them will be talking about writing and how they're showing evidence the rigor is there and it's building and it's exciting to see and they're excited

to talk about it so the magazines that come with the curriculum have been amazing because the students are also learning their note-taking their highlighting skills not that they're highlighting the whole page what key Concepts and ideas and our sixth to 8th graders are using collections that is their curriculum through helping us and hardcore and we also had a training as well an online training at the start of the school year so that was a good training I got to be part of that and learn even more about our Middle School curriculum with our ELA teachers and for dual language we have through our same curriculum Benchmark Advance we have Benchmark Valley London it is so for dual language our teachers have met to discuss how they'll intertwined Benchmark Adelante curriculum materials such as the reading

magazines there's award cards and storybooks this curriculum is going to um it's the actual curriculum that's all in Spanish so we're working to modify and adjust and utilize all of the it comes with big books the cards for the alphabet so we're going to be utilizing a lot intertwining we're going to be continuing collaborative meetings so we can discuss a continued rollout of this as well and I think that's where to work it out with this virtual language dyslexia screenings so our the State of Arizona has mandated that we have dyslexia screeners but it's a little different than what we would what many of us thought to start we were picturing as teachers and staff and parents as we're starting to meet with some of our parents we thought that the dyslexia screener would be

something when you hear it that the students might be reading it might maybe put different colors that's what I was visualizing on the screen because it was going to actually tell us if there was characteristics of Dyslexia maybe reading letters of backwards or certain things with the colorations of the letters on the screens or on the pages that's not what dyslexia screeners necessarily mean in the state of Arizona if it's found out through referrals and through testing later on that a child has a learning disability that is what dyslexia what they're referring to also as dyslexia so if a student were to end up getting an individualized education plan it would be something that is tied to any type of reading disability that they're having and it falls under the term dyslexia not what many

of us might think right away when we hear the word dyslexia so this screening screener in the beginning when the state was talking about it many of us thought that it was going to actually screen and flag and tell us so we could let parents know that they might have to see go out and see further um evaluations outside and such what this screener does is it testing the child and what their reading ability is and it just tells us that they're at Benchmark for reading so then we continue to Monitor and look at data so amplify is the program that our district is utilizing they gave us a few programs that were state approved that we did have to choose amplify if any of you are familiar with dimples throughout the years in our

education world it was that company and it's part of Amplified so teachers screen the whole class each each um now each quarter with each Benchmark and students who are flagged as below Benchmark for the reading comprehension portion of it are then taken by the teachers and one-on-one and they're individually tested so from Benchmark testing to Benchmark testing we see are those students once interventions are employed are those students showing growth if they're not showing growth that's red flags for us and data that we continue to collect so we can monitor and keep letting our parents know keep them apprised of what's going on and coming up with further plans and maybe further referrals for testing this is for grades kindergarten first second and third so we're already doing really great data work and monitoring our

students now with maps testing which we'll talk about a little later but before we put into test kit kindergarteners and now we're starting able to see K12 with our Benchmark tests ahead of time we can catch red flags so we're not ending up with students who are falling between the cracks and the older grades and this is this is a component that's helping us with that so putting those interventions into place and then being able to um turn stuff over to our mtss team which is our multi-tiered system supports team so we can discuss with our teachers tier two and two or three interventions and again parents will be kept in the loop the whole time and then we have to update Ade three times a year with how many students are at Benchmark and

what the growth has been [Music] so I'll turn it over to Mrs polay our math book tonight um we have used to revealed Mafia documented two years ago through our second year um overall all the teachers like it students like it some of them teachers some they don't um it has a lot of components that are put together the whole learning for for the students reveal that help the students become thinkers which is one of the parts that I like about this program um the students applied the habit of my problem solving and they also communicate effectively about math there's a lot of talking in the classrooms about math so um there's two components that I want to show later on the next slide that the students they just have a conversation if there's no

wrong or right answer in both the teachers and the students like that part of the program 100 of the students are using the online when they teach the lessons and um heated for second grade students while interviewing math occasionally they're too little to be on online all the time they do the Readiness Diagnostics um at the beginning of the unit and they also use the math games the online games to practice whatever they learn um the day of the week or depending on how the teacher decides to do it third grade through eighth grade they um have increased the usage of the online program more than last year is getting a lot better with some work in progress um fourth through eighth grade are online only we don't have our puppy books so they have

to log in they do log in in the classroom some of the tissues give online homework some of the teachers print out the homework it's again it's not it's a work in progress but I were getting there we are continuing training the teachers and the students on how to use the online program especially on assessments that's the hardest part for the teachers today and for the students too it's it's it's we're trying to make ends with transition because it's kind of far without the book just make copies when they need to and they work with a card copy along with a computer to answer the questions and the computer um breaks everything for the teachers um has also um activities to do before during and after each of the lessons it also has different assessment

approaches the teachers don't use all the assessments they use whatever they think it's appropriate for the lesson we have the radius diagnostic most of the teachers are I'm going to say 100 of distribution housing tissues to know if the students are ready for that unit for the listeners if the students have some gaps that's when they can touch enjoy the richest sessions so this diagnostic helps them a lot in a lot of all the students use it um the middle school they don't have that Readiness diagnostic per se they have a different tool that they use so they cannot um visualize if the students are ready for the unit um um they also have um the exit tickets that's very popular among the teachers and the students this one also houses teachers uh see if

the student understood the lesson of the day way before the unit lesson so they can Target close Concepts from Green Beach that way the students are ready for the end of the unit okay there are a lot more components than these on trivial math but these are the favorite of the tissues in the students um the one that I was talking about before they'll be curious and the number of routines those are the routines that the students have conversations among themselves and with the teachers about 6 7 minutes um activity of both the teachers and the students like those two activities exploring development is the actual lesson review map offers two ways to give the list and one is Hands-On and the other one is using the computer so sometimes when I if you walk

in in the teacher's classroom and you don't see the tissue using the computers because most likely she's given the lesson using manipulative or just a direct a lesson not so much online the online version it's um hands on in a way because the students yeah um the students are interactive the students can go and play with the smart boards so some teachers rather do that it also depends on the lessons some lessons are not appropriate to do that because it's just harder it's better to use a manipulative so that's that's a good about rebuilding math at Yahoo's both options to teach it um the math replay is the favorite from from both the teachers and the students those are videos that um for every single lesson and that's middle school again it's a little bit

different they do have videos but it's not called math replay there are videos that the teachers can show the students um after the lesson the students can see them on their computers at home they forgot how to utilize them they have access to that at home too um world map sections are math games Hands-On math games I I work with those I print them on how to call um Baker nominate them and then put it together here to the t-shirts I am on United 11 I think there's most of the grades have up to 12 or 13 units so I'm almost done with those and I just started kindergarten so that's that should be my my goal for this year to finish the whole the whole um um games um in the online games how

the the separate of the students they love playing with the math games on the build map take another look in extension thinking are the differentiated components of reveal map check out a look has videos has a lot of extra worksheets and teachers use those for the reteach section um every day um the hours 30 minutes right 30 minutes period and the extended thinking is for the um um enrichment sessions I usually I meet with third fourth fifth grade students and I'm in the charts to start meeting with first and second break once a week and I work with those group of students using those and extended thinking activities foreign so for science and social studies our curriculum commission we decided to hold off on submitting an RFP which is request for proposals from science curriculum

companies until next year we have a preferred time to review existing resources and further develop the possibility of cost kits I don't know if any of you are familiar with science plus kids both for elementary school they are kids that we would be working with TUSD because they have a program of cost kits that we rent they can deliver and they are based off of our state standards they come supply for each teacher in bins some of them are have life like animals but like crayfish snails meal worms but it's from kinder all the way through fifth grade so we're looking into that I started talking to the TUSD Science Center in regards to that there's many schools that you use it so we're looking into that some more and um K5 teachers are also

exploring how to fit science not just into their daily schedules as many of them already do but to do it even more because we have lots of time that are set for math and reading that we have to meet Beyond textbooks is currently being used to teach science and social studies and they're also looking at the scope and sequence map calendar for those standards that they're teaching Newsela also has leveled passages that they're able to use for science and social studies content for our students as well and we may consider middle school science adoption first next school year foreign reading teacher um in September we had 23 students second graders um that were that had a red score of 150.3 um that I was seeing um I averaged them up and we had 31 great

third graders that averaged 169.3 and these uh students received Title One Services written scores are um uh we can look at them and very quickly see whether or not they're at uh grade level and at 150 um to a 160 usually is where we want our kindergartners to be at the end of the year and so we did that these kids I needed some uh some big intervention um in um so I was working with them in a program called the Wilson Reading system and it's very structured and um systematic and so by the end of third grade at the end of October I decided to reassess my third graders and they just felt like they were sufficiently had progressed and we had and they had raised their scores up to 174.8 which um uh

and so many of them were already at grade level so I then exited quite a few of them and um I ended up with um I think let's see 24 third graders at that time um after that um and I didn't feel like the second readers were ready for that assessment at the end of October so I kind of waited another month until I felt like they really had a good handle on things and um and so when I retested them the 23 second graders had a 168.9 so they had gone up um as an average I would have put ways up um so I I then we did all my groups again and so during the month of December um I I was seeing 15 second graders and they were averaging about 61.6 as

I said my 24th third graders were 172.3 that was their new average as a group um and so um I I was I have been waiting to assess them um and so our next Benchmark is in a couple is next week I guess and so I'll be reassessing what their scores are and making determinations whether or not they're going to be retained with to see me or um if they're gonna go back into the uh regular classroom and and just receive um support where I'm just going to be pushing him um so let's see the upgrades will take the district writing test um in January like I said and um and their scores will be used to determine their eligibility um the Wilson Reading system is a program that that is being used we it

is a part of the foundations program it's is the same umbrella and so the foundations is what we did with a K2 or K3 a couple years ago I taught um in a kindergarten for several years and then I went up to first grade when I was a first grade teacher so when I did the Wilson Reading system it was um uh targeted for those kids that needed intervention by the same parent program and it was a really easy slide for me to go in and I was so taken with it that I came in that weekend after I was trained and I spent the whole weekend making packets and making a program that would fit with it and so I have never seen so many kids that are extremely low readers that have actually

made progress with any system better than this program so I'm really really pleased with it um so this semester I'm going to continue the support to support the KA teachers through coaching techniques and strategies within the classroom as well as uh looking at those extremely low students um and uh that's kind of where I'm at right now so thank you okay teacher of the Middle School um Avid has had a lot of things going on this first semester we had uh some classes create Avid add-ins in which they Incorporated their Avid skills of correct collaboration to show what is needed to make the community successful and if any of you are familiar with the AVID program a lot is teaching the kids to um have self-advocacy and to be able to work with each other

which is super important as they go on into their academic careers other classes um they did uh they researched U.S college and universities of their choice they gathered the information they did the research and then they put it all together in an ugly College sweater um they were adorable they were adorable I the kids were all on task it was nice they were on their devices and they were actually doing the research so it was nice and I had the kids nobody could pick the same College within that classroom and there's five sections of that um and it was nice to see them explore outside of Arizona and then finally we had another class um that we were working on reading strategies um we started to read a series of short stories called The Run

and it was about to it was about zombies so they were totally into it um it gave me a chance to work on vocabulary with those students as well as predicting main idea um during the second semester we will stay the course and focus on our weaker components and tutorials will be implemented during the class time to give students um extra help that they may need without having to stay after school if for some reason they cannot stay more in the in-depth research of colleges and universities will be completed hopefully we will end the semester with a campus visit to one of our state universities foreign [Music] so right now special education support currently have a 91 preschool to eighth grade special education students as of January 9th this doesn't include students who are newly

enrolled or are within that initial evaluation process by February 2023 is projected to be closer to 96 special education students three full-time teachers is what we currently have one full-time speech pathologist and board contract tracks for related services for otpt and asdb which is our Arizona school reports 11 programmatic assistance is what we currently have here on our campus and there will be one opening as of January 13th special education support team has worked diligently to incorporate the following data to support the determination of present levels of academic achievement and functional performance for all special education students NWA assessments Baseline data for fall progress monitoring for winter and spring the special education director has pulled the NWA data for special education students to mirror the individual grade level data digs that we have to support

service coordinators with determining further supports for the student that they are serving and towards their individualized education plan goals I itself also being utilized as a baseline assessment in progress monitoring through analytics from there we are also utilizing curriculum-based measures reveal math and the special education materials through rivoma teacher observations and classroom more examples um I'm Lena Zabo and I am the ell teacher and so far this year um it's been exciting um to get to know my students and it's been exciting to work with Mr Lincoln a little more closely because there had been a lot of changes with the ell program there are still more to come but we take them in small strides to try to get the appropriate adjustments that we need to make as they're coming up and as we're

able to also make sure that we roll them out um the program is committed to providing our English language Learners with high quality education for Success that includes high expectations for our El student achievement the district is currently implementing one of its research-based structured immersion SCI models which for us it is the pull out model so we were given a selection of different models that could be applied to the school and based on our school population and our conversations with our administrators it was determined that the pull out SCI model was the best model for us which means that we collaborate both with the teachers in the classroom as well as me going to the kids and pulling them out of their classroom and working with me so it's going into both sets of classrooms

um Continental also provides instruction by highly qualified teachers using appropriate instructional materials and teaching strategies in the students individual Home Room our collaborative environment provides the ability to create the English language lessons that enhance the students English proficiency and skills needed um to access the grade level content so what we like about this model is that it gives us the opportunity to be able to work with teachers to collaborate come up with the activities come up with the lessons that are going to benefit the students and then I take what it is in conversations that we have with the teachers I take that back and then I try to accommodate that and also work on implementing materials that also complement their learning ability for example with Mrs romanelli and title we have students that we

work with that are actually crossed that crossover and we work together to be able to address some of the learning maybe um the the learning gaps that might be there that we both team up we collaborate once again come up with lessons and Target the students with their reading with their writing so we focus in and hone in on that particular section also um with the little ones for example with Mrs tesso she is a classroom teacher where as I said before we push in so I'm with Mrs Tessa every day of the week I have small groups that I work with in her classroom we have about six kids and so I work individually with them and then I also pull them from their classroom and they come to work with me twice a

day and so when I'm talking about pulling the students there are very specific and designated times that we do that so that I don't interrupt too much of the um the homeroom activities that they're working on whether it's the reading and or the math so we try to coordinate opportunities where we work with them in the classroom and if it's during reading and math I'm in the classroom with them but if it's not then they're pulled out and they work with me so um with the program there are different levels that the students achieve one of the big ones for us is once a student has um reached based on the sellout the level of proficiency the student is then exited from the program but that doesn't mean that the students are forgotten because then

for two years in a row we have to monitor the students learning so what that means is that I still monitor the students I still work with the students and mainly the home of teachers to make sure that they're still gaining and they're still learning and they're still able to access the curriculum should there be a concern then we go back to the drawing board and we re-evaluate where the students are at what might be the deficit and then we go from there there are approximately 28 active students in our program right now um they range from grades K all the way through right this is the first year that I don't have um sixth graders but in kindergarten there are six um students and the uh if they're at basic and intermediate and so

the proficiency levels for Rosella are either pre-emergent emergent basic or intermediate and the reason they say that they they flip back and forth because there could be a student that's a compilation of two but in Kinder like I said there are six students with basic and intermediate proficiency levels first grade two students at pre-emergent one student at basic six at intermediate second grade two students at basic three at intermediate third we have two at basic four we have one at pre-emergent fifth two students that basic uh seventh grade two at intermediate eighth grade one student at intermediate and when we're working with the teachers and looking at lessons or activities to be able to help the students I have to look at all of the grade levels and I have to look at each individual

student and be able to come up with lessons activities that complement their learning ability to make sure that they're able to rise to the next level and make gains so the collaboration that I do with the teachers is highly important and that's one of the reasons that once again we chose the model that we have because it allows us to have more communication it's wonderful when the teachers are open to being able to work with me and check back in with me and communicate back and forth what it is that the students need because in the end this is for the kids it's not for me it is for the kids to make sure that they get what they need to get um in addition I have seven students that are currently being monitored so

that just goes back to what I was saying um before that if they happen to get proficient status then I go back and I monitor those students and then once they graduate from the second year there's a whole new set that comes in um the emo curriculum is enhanced by centilla Spotlight wonders epic rape works but also with Mrs romanelli we also use um Wilson um the reassessment window for us is coming up which means at our end of the year testing is mid-year not at the end of the year as we would expect some of the other um test the state tests to happen so right here it says that a reassessment window actually is going to begin today what that means is there are certain classes and tests that I have to take

to be able to qualify to give the students the tests that they need so that for me and my team will start on the 10th the 30th is the window where the azella testing starts and it goes all the way through the 17th but given the fact that we have holidays we have break we have to be very creative with our schedule to make sure that I get in and test all of the students that I have to test so overall if we look at the 28 students plus the seventh it gives us a number about 35 students that have something to do with the ell program but 28 active students that I see so in a nutshell that's E11 thank you thank you and so um if you're this is my own site let's

make it is our um assessment database in our warehouses what what we what what we use it for is to kind of organize our data that's collected from State Testing from nwe a-testing um and now from the the testing that that we're developing through a an application remote conservative um that we can access it through pre-link as a test taker um that data will also be um kind of collected here but um using using linkage and that's that's really what this slide is about but like it's using Lincoln's test uh design tools we've created test banks for all great levels with the except ion eighth grade um uh the test Banks include tests that Target specific mass standards that are aligned with Beyond textbooks calendar um that's these are the standards for for the entire

year um and the the individuals who've made these tests are standing up here so um we we only have two more grade levels to go and then we'll have um we'll have an assessment for every math standard for every grade level that's um standardized within our school district teachers will be able to use those tests to identify which students would Master the targeted standards at the end of each unit teachers will be able to use this information to help with the re-teach and enrichment process so if you think of the the data that's collected and stored within link it um the the Arizona state test is the um it is is the yearly assessment right the nwea think of those as uh they're done portable you have you have your um Baseline um but they're

quarterly assessments so what what do you do in between how do you differentiate and how do you you build a group your students so that you can Target those students who really need um really need to be re-taught um and this uh this Tool uh within Lincoln's test taking design features is how we'll talk about it that's it and for NWA Maps assessment those are reportedly benchmarks the areas tested are reading and Mathematics those are grades k through eight then language usage is the conventions of writing but they're tested on that's week second through eight and this Benchmark we've added on to science so we'll get to start seeing where students are active science which will also be a big help for us moving forward with curriculum that we're also going to be looking for

and that'll be third through eighth graders who are tested so we're excited to see what the data will the outcomes and data will look like once they're done with testing these next two weeks the growth data outcomes are studied and analyzed by our teachers and all of us here on our leadership team in data dick meetings we are still building our data room which we've started and in fact tomorrow we're going to be working with our Kinder first and second grade teachers to go over some data with them as well they're helping build the data room walls interventions and academic monitoring as well as the mtss referrals are made based on the outcomes that we see from our benchmarks when our testing window is January 16th through the 27th and then student reports of testing

outcomes are placed into the student's data binders which you have to see in our um e-binder that our middle schoolers have they have been working with showing them how to access that so what we're going to be working on in the coming weeks is how all of our students have a little app on the bottom of their screen so parents this has been how you know we'll put that in our next weekly to home to our newsletter to our parents monthly newsletter is they click on it and it's a Lincoln app and it opens up all of their data for you to see where they're at and our students are excited to share with us when we do our walks what their goals are and how they're trying to beat them just real quick on

IXL just wanted to share um how much learning is happening so you can see the report there where the skills on the right hand side where students have mastered and are proficient in and are practicing we do have we did find out from the report that 80 percent of IXL is happening at home and 82 percent is happening at school and so when I excel first came out a couple years ago we definitely and during covet we're really pushing IXL and it's showing that 77 of teacher engagement I excel we really have to work at maximizing the program because it is a diagnostic where it'll Place students at their level so that students are closing the achievement Gap at home while they're working on IXL and in school as well so we don't want IXL

to replace what teachers are doing at school I know a lot of teachers are assigning homework work and additional practice but I know a lot of our students say oh we don't like it but you can practice all content reading math science social studies kids are in dual language have access to the Spanish I excel as well I know what our students what's also really pretty cool that we love is that when they take it links to the NWA Benchmark testing so wherever our students are falling with their benchmarks it ends up being their profile or dashboard is unique to the needs and the areas that that they need to work on and um reteaching Rich we talked a little bit about that or Elementary the focus is mathematics that occurs daily except for Wednesdays

and that's them looking at the math standards and the Concerta formative assessments so that Mr Ferguson was talking about they are able to utilize those weeklies to see are they getting the standard that's being taught and rather than just moving on and not knowing so that's what the read teach and enriches and for Middle School it occurs the first and third Wednesday of the month and that's in all subject areas right now the teachers are working with their students having interventions in each subject area of the class gifted education elementary students are instructed by Mrs romanelli and are currently working on Steam academics and projects middle school students are instructed on Thursdays by myself during sixth period they're currently working on building a future city that revolves around climate change and they're really excited because

we've started to work on a kind of action to bring back our Greenhouse cold time as we've discussed it occurs monthly and that's where they present their student growth and work that they're excited about to their peers to their teachers and site leadership foreign [Music] have to have laser focus that Mr Nathan is part of this curriculum team as well but since he already presented I figured I would spare him a slide and talking time but I mean these folks are truly dedicated to closing the achievement Gap and also have to elevate and up their game and I know sometimes they think I have crazy ideas but we all push each other to be better and so thank you all foreign conflict of interest disclosure which is due back to the county so the children

out appropriately okay I duly noted District Financial reports all right so the district went afterwards about 95 Pages if you'd like we can go over it please please yes please tune in yeah I appreciate it um within the district Financial award um one of the things I kind of wanted to tap on is 1526 which is our tax credit accounts um we do have some extracurricular activities that have not had any activity within the last couple of years so those have been shown to miss Rico Ms Rico will be taking those from our site Council which is which is our parent art advisory committee and within that the parent advisory committee will help determine how those funds are going to be split up do they need to go evenly throughout the rest of the clubs

do they go to the designated tax credit account so there will be some movement um your your Finance report is pretty high level you're not going to see that other than that I will open up to any questions y'all may have um how's your tax credit account making payments supposed to uh for these years um right now there's about 250 000 sitting in a minute tax credit account um that is not including the 60 tax credits I've received uh since we've gone on break um like times I came in during the break I put in roughly 40 tax credits and since we've come back on Monday and put in another 25. does that include funds of your marked for the Civics field trip yes yes it does what's our deadline for what for getting tax

credit checks in too so any tax credits that we received now can be used either in the previous calendar year or in the current calendar year we have up until tax day which is April 16th this year so any tax credits that have received for them those people who turn in those tax credits have the option of doing it for either year anything received after tax day will be for 2023 taxes what's the uh anticipated cost and completion data in the exterior painting and and weatherproofing free weatherproofing okay so let me since we do have a new board member let me kind of give them a high level overview of what's going on there is an organization within a stage called the school facilities board it is under the Office of Management now so it's

got another weird name um what that organization does is they keep schools at minimum standards so whenever an AC unit goes down we can go through the sfb to have that replaced so it's not coming out of District funds what we're looking at right now is a weatherization project we have had the assessment done and I'm proud to report that we failed miserably so with that failure you know we have windows that are no longer keeping moisture and air outside and the air that's supposed to be inside inside we have doors that have failed um the block walls are are retaining moisture and not repelling so what we're doing the new building or the old building yeah especially whether you can see everything so right now we do have a quote that so by using

the sfb it's a process it's not like if I wanted to go out right now get some quotes to have it painted we could have it painted within two months the sfb is a long and drawn out process we had to get an assessment done right now we are working with architects in the design phase because we do have doors that need to be replaced we have Windows that need to replace was um the paint will not be like a Dunn-Edwards paint that you could go to Home Depot or Lowe's and purchase it'll be an Alaska American Paint which will actually help repel water even more so so right now the folk that I have to do the elastomerative paint just the paint it's six hundred thousand dollars good three four whatever the 80 000.

and that is just that's just the paint portion that does not include door Replacements and window replacements so what is going on right now is we have Architects that are putting together good packages to determine what all needs to be replaced and once that gets finalized and we send that out footbeds then we'll have lasers we'll have Millworks we'll have painters all put in bits where this ad and we'll submit those bids to the sfb and then we can start actually fixing those in all actuality I'm hoping May June time though for um just because it is such a long and drawn-out process for the for the Public's sake sfb the reason it's taking so long to draw an Astra funds out in our budget so our district it won't be paying for these uh

improvements correct equal so that's why we're putting in the extra time I just have to say it's a shame that after spending 16 million bucks on this place yeah well so just to just to clarify I mean it's not just the paint if you walk over and look at the I'm trying to get my directions right to the northwest corner of the Middle School you'll see the cracking running all the way up the walls you know so now we have to have Engineers come in and check the stability of the building just because of the cracking in the stabilization even worse I didn't say it was going to be painless yo but you know the settling of the ground is the building tilting you know so there's a lot of things that are going into

this some of our so I'm just going to kind of use a technical term some of our scuppers which is where the downspouts are from a roofs some of those pipes are clogged so over the Overflow direct drain so if you look at the fourth grade side of the building on the on the playground side you will see where the water runoff is just tore away all the paint That's underneath the Overflow so there's a lot more to it than just you know throwing some paint on a roller and slapping it up on the building agreed I just it's blatantly obvious that the paint was thin yeah see it out front there and two this is not our first review I mean we had a we had a library full of water because of simple

engineering issues with water flowing downhill and we've talked until we've talked with the architect we've specifically walk into the library showed them where the water was coming in and they'll come up with a you're one of the Architects we talked to was bringing in a civil engineer to come in and look at our our land to see if it needs to be regraded so with their there's quite a few steps there you know like I said it's not as simple as slapping paint on the walls no I get it it's just frustration and spending a lot of money yeah and I'll leave it at that yeah that's obviously well that's why the sfb is here to help us fix it and it's not going to come out of our pocket that's coming out of the

taxpayer deposit well it is coming over well the statement the state does fund the sfb to the tune of about 90 million dollar um there was a product there was talk of increasing that to about 200 just because there are so many schools that that need things anyway thanks for taking care of it and just for the record we Continental family did not know about this program until Greg came aboard because we would have had to probably do a bond or kind of nickel Diamond along the way um so thank you great thank you I don't think it's a stress to say that we wouldn't have six hundred thousand dollars to do this right to do it right right no yeah we're looking for a emotions to approve the district Financial help them to approve
