okay we are back from our recess so welcome everyone to our may the 9th uh governing board meeting so we've got a couple things to go through and then we will hit uh the month but feel free to uh help yourself it's a slice or two of pizza and uh our first thing up is our uh pup is there anybody on the thumb do you have anyone on the line with that we have christy latham who i believe is going to talk about the recent dc trip last week come on robby so we just got back from dc on saturday we finally made it after two years so it was super exciting um everything went really well with the trip we had two days of rain but the kids trooped right through it and we
went and still did our sightseeing in the rain and um i think it went it went really really well what do you think probably it was really really rough considering coped and all that stuff like we we did have like running with like the mask mandate but we're but they were able to luckily get rid of the mask mandate then your favorite part i'd say the mount vernon or smithsonian yeah and this year for the first time because of grade we did the twilight tattoo we had never done that as far as i know none of our groups and years have done it usually go see a play and i will by far every year insists the twilight tattoo instead of the play [Music] the twilight tattoo is off of the army base and they
show the different eras and different wars and the complete out they come out with outfits they talk about something there's usually one person who's talking about somebody who is in that war and they talk about their experience coming from that person and the more they brought out the horses the dogs it was very very interesting i think it was one of the top um top events that we did and the parents who went a couple years ago said that's by far been one of their favorite things that we've done in their days that don't ever need to play again do this so um but i i it was it was a very awesome trip it was good to be back and now we're ready to start going for next year we're already getting ready for
that so it was awesome anything else any questions about our being great [Applause] you haven't highlighted all right so we're going to get started uh thank you members of the governing board that's miranda rico um for those of you that don't know me i'm albert eines i'm the current director of technology services uh school district i've been employed here since 2010. and for the community members and some of the newer partners of little quick bio uh like i said i started working here in 2010 i grew up in freddie arizona small mining town uh northern tucson i'm a graduate of the university of arizona's albert college of physics management i have been in education for 22 years now this year and in information technology 29 years um um so just a quick background of what's
going on with technology here in the district our current state is in the 27 28 2018 school year we switched to a new isp and a phone service provider we use drive communications which is what we call the cloud voip so it's a cloud voice over ip phone service which means that our phones and our phone service network runs basically over the internet um our isp service is through sun corridor which is what's called internet2 so what internet 2 is is it's a consortium of all educational research entities so they are on basically their own separate network so when we go out to the internet our internet is straight through universities and we can basically get to where everybody else can get you can get to google you can get to cnn anywhere from home
but our traffic is not going to be shared with your traffic even though we're going to the same place which makes our internet a little uh quicker and it's a little more reliable more education wise uh we have a wireless network we also have some cloud security cameras which don't require the use of a box on campus which has been managed and maintained for storage our teaching staff are all they are all issued laptops and they are on the three-year refresh cycle because um those are their main that's their main tool when they are in the classroom so they are used every day all day by those teachers they take it home uh if they want we even allow attorney staff members over the summer our grades k through eight are all one to one
we currently have an online payment system that most of you know already parents lunch fees that's our food service department uh two years ago went to an online menu planning it actually helps with their reporting um we also consolidated this webpage and our current notifications our notification system uh that way it's all under one system and everything runs through the same format where we're not having to go to different places to do track multiplications uh with that it also allows us a good ability to not only put content to our web page but if you do send a notice we can actually post those notices uh to our social media accounts at the same time without having to log in and move them through different places we're looking at wanting to build additional capacity for
our wireless network uh arizona's current standard is the 100 bucks per student the district right now is currently 250 megabytes per student but the upcoming standard and i'll come up when we look at the future stuff for going on technology upcoming is that ideally they want one megabyte for students of uh students to be able to do what they need to do on an ongoing basis in the classroom and at school and last year we implemented and turned on a new piece of service with our information system which is our mtss which is our multi-tier support system module for our tiered intervention and positive behavior going forward for this year we've applied for e-rate funding with a federal reimbursement plan which is based on our pre-lunch counts which is why it's very important when you
get when we send the papers out and those forms out that even if you don't think you qualify to spill them out because those help us one with funding or numerous it's not just your age also our title things like this so our funding uh reimbursement for this year is 70 which means that the federal government will pick up 70 of the projects that we have applied for so there are two there are two categories while the ones called category one and the other one's called category two category one is basically just our internet service anything that gets us connected to the internet category category two are all is all of the infrastructure that helps us get connected to the internet so it's all the stuff you don't see all the things that these things
plug into the closets our wi-fi adapters so this is the first thing that we actually are qualifying for category two so we're going to look at what we're basically calling replacing our current backbone equipment is going on probably 12 to 13 years old and that stuff runs 24 7 and never takes a day off unless there and is the opportunity to do a number on that kind of equipment because they're just online so for our category one services we are we are upgrading our internet bandwidth of 200 megabits per second to one gig it ends up uh with this year's uh filing it's essentially the same as we're paying for 200 megs for one game with the new contracts that were working we worked out with this summer so it's not costing us anymore to
go to one game uh and the federal government will pick up eight thousand four hundred dollars of that cost for google searches our category 2 services which are 10 42 equipment which i thought was earlier is uh that product is gonna is our pre-discount which is the total product of the district have paid 100 of it to come out to roughly 76 000 and our reimbursement is gonna be fifty thousand fifty three thousand dollars so the district has definitely a lot of equipment and installation uh what one thing that we also apply for that we haven't applied for in the past is something called basic maintenance of internal connections and that is uh the monitoring and assistance with the the health and stability of the backbone equipment so obviously well one person two people can't
just sit all day and watch all the equipment to make sure they're going where they're supposed to be going that all of the wireless at that out of our access points are are up and stable or have all the appropriate passes so that basic maintenance is something that that helps with the management of the backbone equipment and as you can see we're at 300 19 200 which would be responsible we'll be responsible for but we're going to get four hundred 13 dollars in the reimbursement fundraising is that if that is approved we uh filed for those uh earlier in the month i actually think that that because uh earlier than fed in april so we haven't got back whether we're not going to be whether we're funded or not but more than likely our numbers
and our discount rates will be funded for those those amounts um we've already talked about the internet going up to our uh increased bandwidth and then upgrading our backbone switches in the wireless network and as it is as you know with technology anytime you put something in it's usually already out of date so the wireless network is the one thing that really needs to be updated because we have more and more devices so more and more traffic goes over those devices so having newer more up-to-date software on those devices will definitely help with the students and what they can do here um some of the other things that we're also looking at and it's going to come up a little later in the agenda is so basically the quick summary of that is that they'll
assist fashion teachers with their educational technology needs and integration in classrooms helping them with their products that we use like i excel bluefield new zilla et cetera those types of things which it'll take things off of my place i can concentrate on the administrative duties and the infrastructure part which sometimes that takes away takes away from differentiated instruction helping uh them plan and develop lessons for students with their different educational needs in the classrooms the next thing that we do here is we do have a program here called avid so we have middle school students they have an elective for avid uh some of the elementary kids we have currently right now a kinder a first grade a second grade and a third grade teacher who are both an avid trained now avid is what
they call advancement via individual determination and avid's mission is to close the opportunity gap in preparing all students for college readiness and success in global society so what we both want to focus on is introducing college not saying you have to go to college but it's an option for college and career just giving them the introduction to colleges so if you'll notice in your teachers classrooms they'll have a board or their dorm and you decorate it with specific colleges they all picked the college that they were that was basically their sort of mascot college for the year just so that kids see that something to introduce they go in they see a college they know what it is um and that sort of thing so this year we focused on on two of those weaker
strategies and then writing and organization and i'll get to exactly what each one of those is after that so for next school year uh we're going to focus on the pd is expanding on the other ones which would be inquiry collaboration and reading so this year we were looking at writing and organization so going forward for next year we'll have one avatar and classroom teacher in grades k through four one middle school science teacher and one avid elective teacher um we also have six staff members will be attending the avid summer institute this year that we're paying for our title funds and just today the avid students will take a field trip to the university of arizona to give that uh intro and field for universities we took it to the tree ring so they
could learn about the different disciplines that actually use tree rings because there is no triggering major climate environmental studies physics chemistry studies biology studies all use that research in their research so somehow everything is kind of connected and not just one little piece for that so that's kind of kind of an interesting experience for the kids today so we're talking about wigger which is writing inquiry collaboration organization and reading so for writing writing is uh so what we have is a learning tool it's a personal and public communication tool and it's a record of thinking so students who write consider the audience engage in various writing processes and address specific situations they support their thinking and demonstrate understanding of what they're writing so when they call it avid curriculum it's not a curriculum as in
like math and english and science it is a system of tools and strategies to help teachers facilitate the curriculum the district's president for ela so when we're talking about for writing we're talking about using pronoun notes or focus on safety strategies instead of just memorize and forget the things that help students to do their thinking learning logs quick writes process writing and fair evaluation and authentic writing so those are strategies to help kids become better writers when it comes to inquiry which is one of the ones we're going to look at for next year so we're looking at uncovering one thunders sorry i can't see today when covering one's understanding asking additional questions engaging and thinking learning and discussion so that's wanting kids to be inquiry-based they want to ask questions they want to want
them to understand uh what and why to ask that sort of thing so students when it comes to inquiry they analyze and synthesize synthesized materials in class they clearly they clarify their own thinking they probe others thinking and they work through ambiguity so teaching kids to ask the questions to help them understand so what we want to try to support when it comes to the inquiry is giving the teachers the tools to ask skill questioning techniques process levels of thinking to product seminars tutorials investigations and guided questions collaboration so collaboration is pretty straightforward uh a lot of teachers already do this you know working together with groups understanding how to work in a group which is preparing them when they get into college whether they get into career you aren't essentially just alone anymore you
do have to collaborate and that's one of the things when we went to uh the true reading this afternoon that they really emphasized that it's not just one discipline a lot of people collaborating with the data and research that they do they're triggering which is really really new so you know students who collaborate they work together for a common goal they develop positive interdependence they work in focused study groups and they support the learning of others looking for it so what we want to try to help with sorry sorry i wasn't in agreement with collaboration my bad so when it comes down to collaboration that's when we talk about also you know you'll see some of these kind of overlap a little bit we'll talk about some product seminars twirls philosophical chairs um group activities
and projects peer editing groups and uh service learning projects the next one is organization so when we talk about we kind of what we focused on this year was organization for the kids we were talking about uh finders data binders traffic organizers things that help kids stay organized time management the kids and the other levels a little more detail than what uh probably they're getting into the classrooms so with that what we looked at and those these are the strategies down here binder organizational tools calendars planners agendas graphic organizers focus note-taking approach um that is all part of organization and then i'll just we want that helps kids prepare so that they understand how material and data and the last part is reading so we want to strategically gain knowledge gain meaning understanding and knowledge
from print and other media it's purpose-driven and it is interactive so students who read understand text structure they apply prior knowledge and make connections to other texts self self and the world and they make predictions and ask questions and they create visual images as they need so with the avid what we want them is to have deep reading strategies and overtaking graphic organization vocabulary building um summarizing and reciprocal teaching which is making sure that the kids and everything understand how everything is connected within each other so that was a quick um just a quick view of wicker and i'll open it up to questions if anybody has any questions albert and i just want to add for the community that we do all these strategies we modify for kindergartners first graders second graders because it's
our hope that by the time they get to middle school they are using higher level questioning they know how to operate socratic seminars they know how to organize and be prepared for high school and for college readiness we're also asking if any of you have any college or university flags that you can have your relatives send from different states or your own we would like to get our college going culture established as before you even walk in the school in our office so people look out if you travel anywhere in the summer find the college pennant to bring to school for us okay and our middle school also have the hallways identified as specific universities so we really just want to build awareness for our students at our school thank you is this an elective
that a student takes yes so not all students will get this no but we are expanding it into uh offering it as a coursework class from this year we're still trying to structure how to get everybody into that class that fourth person that fourth period is a kind of a tough scheduling session with the pe and band and that third class with the current average teacher so as i looked at this program and i went back and i looked at they have a new ceo that just started last month uh they've been around for a while it's a non-profit that was started by educators um do we have to pay for this curriculum yes there's a it's not curriculum it's the membership that we paid so we've paid access to material like templates for focus
note taking they provide the training on how to do what they're doing to facilitate a socratic seminar philosophical chairs so we're talking about curriculum it's not curriculum per se it's like mapping science it's triggered before utilizing these tools uh graphic organizers right yeah so i looked at the cornell note-taking and of course they have a product which they sell as well with the the queue and the notes and the summary sheet they have lots of products that they sell is that what we're doing we're buying these products the membership that we have access to all of missouri and winston membership um for all students k-8 k-8 with all the modules for producers we really worked on them when we're looking at this and we have been looking at it for a while and it can
get very very expensive it's one of the things that we looked at when we tried to take out a title or something we're not thinking about which is what we did this year title funds and i work with various reps of trying to get what we call small smaller schools pricing because before a previous post we were looking at anything like 10 to 15 000 a year for this type of registration membership and we're like we're not that big and we're looking at x number of students this is what we're looking at and they and so have we done the pre and post assessment to see the impact that avid is having on our students not yet how much pre-assessment does we have of our kids our kids performed last year right and then now
going through this year we sally up and look at all of the data collected for the year and then then we'll look to see which kids when they haven't liked it which gives me the average classes to see okay that i'll be interested in seeing that because that's that's not going to be without some holes in the methodology right and what to explain to their teachers this isn't one more thing to ask their place think of it as if it isn't like people want all their kids to have these skills which not only will help but i thought it was a fourth period curriculum is it across all are we are we encouraging all of our teachers to use socratic methods and filters when we're so if i could interject so we do have one
designated trained teacher at each grade level like mr marianas mentioned we are training all of our teachers on the modules so we want not only just our avid trained teachers but the hope is that they will help their colleagues also in their planning because it's more it's strategies in teaching and learning so it's engagement strategies it's note-taking strategies it's coming to an agreement on graphic organizers that we're going to use at our school in order to better prepare our kids so that not every to have consistency for k-8 where it's not changing every single year in the expectation of how you take notes of how you what graphic organizers you're using how you're writing so it's a systemic way to to keep teachers and kids engaged but we are offering it started out as high
school then they went down to middle school and then they went down to elementary but avid has realized that from the get-go they should have started at elementary and then impacted middle schools and high schools so we're coming in at a time where the curriculum and the methods are developed for elementary through high school so eventually you'll see school by avid is our goal and we started one teacher program and we did provide professional development in the two strategies of writing and organizations focused on taking and so that that is the goal even though we have specific teachers who have attended abbott training we when we do we do focus it for not just those teachers we open it and we provide that pd for all teachers great thank you now it's your character so
we've got the principal report the superintendent report and then good evening colts and cole families get to see you all let's start with our cult celebrations our very own sebastian mercedes bear came in fourth place in the fifth grade division in our southern arizona district championship contest we're very proud of him we'd like to recognize the arizona health association state awards we're also celebrating these students third grade they created posters for for the state award so the third grade poster there was neil pavilla legarda is the third arizona arizona and overall poster winner her entry will be look forward to the alps national contest fourth grade winner was liam cordero seventh grade essay was savannah nieves so her seventh grade arizona overall essay she was the overall essay winner her entry will also be poured

had no idea what it was going to look like but it turned out really beautiful and the kids were really excited that we did this and they're excited to write those letters of support we have made two teacher nominations one for elementary school and one for middle school to the arizona educational foundation teacher of the year and our first nominee is this is sharon flowers in third grade she's deserving of the arizona teacher of the year award she's been a teacher at continental school pre-k 8 for 23 years how many of you know mrs flowers me too through the years she's taught many students who have come through our doors she currently serves as a third grade teacher and has also assisted departmentalization program she currently teaches all subject areas she's a phenomenal colleague and

help if she can definitely always works hard and when she's challenged she does not give up she tries her best she also makes sure her work's completed and turned in on time daphne you are a great example of what a cult should be keep working hard girl this is montoya congratulations my name is robbie and i'm in 8th grade [Music] so all of the middle school teachers chose robbie robbie has had such a wonderful 8th grade year he's a delight to have in the classroom and works diligently on his academics ravi is kind to everyone and brings positive energy to all his classes we can always count on robbie to do the right thing and always follow the rules he's a great role model for other students we wish robbie the best of luck as
he enters the high school next year we know he will do well congratulations robbie please oh parents if you want to come up closer to get pictures we have one yeah thing we ask that the students help us so we started a few years back something that we call the golden horseshoe award which is kind of like the employee of the month so like we have the quote of the month for our students we also as an administration team like to recognize the good works that our staff is doing the first one that we're going to do is a classified staff member this individual is fairly new to our district he's been here two years now um came in in our transportation department mr lane you can come up here and talk with me too
[Music] but this person came in in a little bit different role one that we haven't had here at cockpit so we had bus drivers but we didn't have a trainer and so we went we reached out to this individual who had been a trainer at a neighboring school district and they were willing to come and drive for us but also train um which is super handy to do because we are one of the only school districts this year that hasn't had to um charter the really expensive white charter buses for athletics and even just to get kids to school and i contribute that a lot to a having a transportation department where our drivers want to stay and they're not leaving and b to mr ken cruz who has started training new drivers and bringing
in fresh drivers to the district um that are highly qualified and doing a great job is there anything else that i think the biggest thing is is mr cruz actually retired from the neighboring school district and a little armed twisting and negotiating um god had come over but he has done a phenomenal job and he's actually really helped me to bring our transportation department to where we are now um and not struggling with like other schools so it's a great thing to have here and he does that all for the love and compassion and safety of our students so if you get to know him it really comes from a place of safety and caring for each kid um he kind of lives by that motto that he believes the bus driver is the first
base from the school that the kids see every day and the last space that they see every day and he really he wears a big old smile as he drives that bus around and all the kids see that when they get on the bus and then they leave the bus and so i really appreciate him and his temperament and his positive attitude all the time so although he wasn't able to be here tonight because he also teaches taekwondo in the community we appreciate him two children we will be giving this a staff meeting this week he did tell me today continental is his family continental very much for our certified staff member the golden horseshoe award goes to our third our second grade teacher valeria nawado she's in her third year here as a continental
teacher her first year here as you can imagine being a first year teacher you learn a lot it was the year we shut down for covin so she learned a lot that year there was things that we didn't even expect that she had to jump on board and figure out how to do everything along with everybody but she's always had a great attitude about it and loves her students and she's grown so much she started as a first grade teacher this year she's a second grade teacher and she's grown so much that we've talked many times about just how effortless she makes it look the transitions in her classroom the way she's instructing to instructing her students and the love that she has for them we're very proud to have miss navado on board with
us as a second grade teacher and as a continental cult so she unfortunately couldn't make it tonight either but we will make sure that we also do this presentation at our staff meeting on wednesday yesterday [Music] okay ready one two three good job thank you so we'd like to do a big round of applause for all of our global massive public health pizza okay before you leave you can take some for the road your other brothers and sisters that may be home yeah with that you're welcome to stay but look forward to seeing you guys next fall and yeah and then have a great summer [Music] um yes so report items approval of the vouchers yes sir so we took these out of the consent agenda as i've been requested so we bring these to
you tonight we um not your number 9037 um there was no explanatory data as far as what the funds were spent on it just said so the the so the journal that you were looking at was the uh the check report showing the liabilities further back in there should be the journals shows everything else that was in it i i don't have access to that but i went through it i went through the entire voucher and that's all it was all it has is accounts yeah i remember looking at it um and i remember it matching up to the journal entries so under 9037 there's a thousand dollars to amazon for supplies 551 dollars to american fire equipment sales and service um department of revenue 16. aspen which is uh our food service 2500. there
was a check for ms grimes it was reimbursement check for 211 a check to mr perlman for 110. um so conical and although i mean the vouchers agreeing the bachelor's already been approved we all signed off on it if i could just get a list of that i mean i see the funds the funds that they were assigned to i just don't know the individual expenditures and i'm looking at the entire thing so this piece here was not included it's on page five yeah my apologies not a problem sir so i have a question you've added a new column a cleared column are you are you using that for reconciliation i haven't added anything to the voucher which page are you looking at so i can kind of i'm i'm looking at the actual um
well maybe somebody else uh put it in there the checklisting oh are you talking about the the the report that we showed that where we check off the checks from that we've received yeah um i haven't noticed that before yeah it that's that's actually it's always been there it's not nothing that we have added generally we just go through and check off as as we see that things have cleared are there any other questions on the vouchers no not for me okay this is alan yes this is yes mr mcgivern yes mr joshua so i before you deny this the district finance report as we do every month this was ran i believe on the 4th so i will open it up to any questions that you may have on district finances i don't have
my glasses on but isn't that the budget one there that this is the budget versus actual that you asked me to put together with the with the finance report to follow protocol we need to have a motion in a second i will make a motion to approve the district okay i'll discuss what may be unassigned still remaining i just want to make sure i understand that as of the 30th of april we still have almost a half a million dollars of unassigned funds in the mmo account okay so let me go ahead and explain that one to you that very first column the regular education we just unencumbered about two hundred thousand dollars that was encumbered to cerritos school district for tuition so we made that final payment on the vouchers that you permit that
you've opened up so that freed up so those months were not available until a week or so ago okay so but so we do have yes half a million dollars of unassigned funds in the mno account correct um also 142 thousand dollars of unspeddester funds so far that sounds about right okay and 274 000 of unsigned food services funds yes i'm sorry we expect to have that uh much on the side at this point in time food costs this year have not well food costs have gone up for us um but with more students actually eating meals we're having higher and higher reimbursements so our reimbursements have outpaced our expenditures and speaking of the food service i believe it's next wednesday they're getting a new oven you know so that's a 75 000 expenditure but
that's already within that encumbered it's not included in that unencumbered amount so okay uh okay i mean they're they're eight hundred thousand dollars wasn't the food paid for wasn't the food free this year for students from federal funds yes so we really didn't have any reimbursements no our reimbursements were federal funds our reimbursements are always better funds it's a federal program but but all students were eligible for the federal program correct but we only get reimbursements on meals that are actually served as students so we get four dollars and 33 cents per lunch that we serve to each and every student although the student doesn't have to pay anything so we still get that as a reimbursement from the federal government so but again because it was free to all students this year we prop
what would we have noticed what would we have been reimbursed last uh prior to the pandemic i believe a fully refunded a fully funded meal so on the on a free student that reimbursement rate is 2.82 it went up last two meetings well no that's so and what about how many of our students would have been getting that we were we were lower than average because um the free and reduced forms that's what mr marianas was talking about that we had less parents fill them out this year since it was free it was really difficult for us to get our parents to fill out that free reduced form so typically we have 37 31 31 of our kids um we've had our highest year is 37. this year we're at 31. okay and they don't
it doesn't break down for me how they would be many okay but we do have to really get those forms in because in order to be a title one school you typically have to be at 40 free and reduced and we've been between 35 and 37 38 and this year 31 so that's part of the reason why our federal funds are decreasing and we were down 58 thousand dollars this year in our title grants so that's why mr rabianis was saying we have to get students to at least fill out the form and try to get as many kids as possible to qualify um can title one title to a title four funds unspent be carried over to subsequent years yes thank you okay this is alan yes this is yes mr mcgivern unfinished business
the gifted education scope and sequence and then go through the gifted education scope and okay no it's just in case you have questions oh you know i was talking about future cities we were waiting to see how much that's for the middle school it's 25 dollars flat registration fee for all our students doesn't matter how many and how many teams make so i just came across that data for us so they could go if our teams middle schoolers end up competing they will fly them to washington dc and they'll end up competing in washington so more information on all of this that we're going to be rolling out but we're very excited do we yeah do we have a feel on how many dollars out of the mmo budget we're going to need in order
to practically fund this in addition to the wonderful i don't know what 600 or 500 or 400 that we're going to get from the state on this one so we will miss roman alley and myself along with miss stacy schaefer berkshire will be going over the needs of what we will be and i did already speak a little bit about it with mishriko and mr schubert so he can start crunching numbers but i would say there's a lot that we want to do with our students is coming to school here and it would be wonderful if to start we would even be able to get three thousand dollars to start but we will have it's not that's just a number i'm going out right now but we will have a itemized list as to things
that we want and it might be a little more because we also want to make sure that as we do this rollout next year our teachers are also going to be getting professional development as well because they're going to have to also be teaching the students that are gifted in their class but knowing the strategies and techniques to make sure that they're meeting their unique needs as well so we might be adding some stuff on there that we may need instruction wise for us to be doing with our teachers and not just them but with our parents because we also need to make sure that the parents of those that are in our gifted education program are also going to be getting educated throughout the school year about what does it mean to have a
child who's gifted and how to support them throughout the rest of their educational career what's the first draft of the budget for next year dude one so received an email today from add in the auditor general's office they will um if the legislature is looking to have a budget prior to june 3rd they will send it out on june 3rd if they see that the legislature will have it done within a week of that they will hold off and then issue them once the legislature passes a budget so they answer that question right now it kind of depends so june 3rd or sooner if the legislature moves on it june 3rd or a week later if they don't so it would be submitted to us at the june meeting yes so you'll get a proposed
budget at the gym meeting okay and then you'll have an adopted budget at the july meeting and then you'll probably have a revision one at the august meeting because of the budget forms being updated things like that okay so you guys went to so free a couple weeks ago which is where serena does their get to the program so david so what the model that they utilize from our understanding is they use the cluster model in their classrooms district wide and saudita but what they do is once a week they transport their student transport transfers not transport their students um to sobering and they get all once a week one day a week full out per grade level uh and it's about three hours a day it seems like because they also have them do
physical education in the time that they're there and then they also give them one and then they take them back to their to their sites but um the instructor that we met with we thought it would be really important she does know has a wealth of knowledge as well that if it's possible for some of our pds next year to be able to bring her here to to put some pd's on for our teachers in regards to not just differentiating for our gift education students but our students that were in the 7th and 8th stage 9 for testing which is high average students and it's it's important that our teachers know how to do that i know as a teacher myself when i first started off you never know as teachers really what to do
with the students who finish very quickly and they don't feel that they're challenged and they don't always train the teachers on what to do so i'm sure if you look some teachers will have like the baskets of oh this is the students that might finish the work and these are challenging worksheets that they can utilize but we really needed to know the exact needs of the students that are gifted and those that are high achieving so that they can continue to be challenged in those areas whether it's mathematics reading writing etc but we were also thinking that it's really important that we want to grow our own gifted education program here at continental it means a lot if we can do that here and we're striving to do that so mrs romanelli has her provisional
certification she will be focusing on teaching the third through fifth grade students and i have my full endorsement in gifted education and i'll be focused twice a week on doing the middle school students but all the other days during the week it needs to be where we're training our teachers to provide those services for our students in their classrooms throughout the day so it was a wonderful program that they have set up there we're excited that we may be able to network with them and collaborate with saurita school district in the next school year and beyond thank you okay mr allen yes mr kai yes mr mcgivern all right new business vitamin a about the new ela curriculum that's not good doctor the new ela curriculum for 2022 a second any discussion i have some
questions um i think we made the right choice um i actually went through all of the recommendations and evaluations of each one of the teachers that was on the curriculum committee on this as to why this particular curriculum was chosen uh versus the other two that were under consideration and i think that due diligence is evident and and i appreciate their work on this um some of the numbers were a little different than what was originally proposed uh for the benchmark advanced ela i had about a hundred and a hundred and three thousand dollars for uh the print and digital english version and another thirty seven thousand dollars on the spanish version for 140 yet this request says uh 122 000 dollars is uh where where's the difference coming from so that quote was higher
this was higher yeah there were original presented so they based it just um on 25 students per class and then when we actually got down to narrowing it down and they tailor the quote specific to our numbers so it kind of fluctuated at different grade levels based on number of students per class so that's where the savings comes from and they also um because i had told her that it was we she negotiated because i said that we were this was our limit and that the other company had come in right about the same and so they freed up some pd free pd for us and some student materials so that's why the cost is a little bit lower okay and we are recommending to purchase the spanish version it comes yes so the one
i mean we don't have to um no i mean there they're two different options here right and yeah and the recommendation is to purchase the spanish version do our dual language teachers recommend and want this spanish version of this ela curriculum they were super excited that this curriculum that the committee chose had the parallel spanish component because they teach spanish and right now we're using other resources but they are very excited that the leveled readers will be in spanish and um so they they were really just intrigued that the fact prior to companies did not have a spanish parallel so now that the spanish companies that the companies have been developing parallel curriculum it's very helpful for dual language programs because teachers it's not a separate entity and they can continue the learning on content
that the kids are receiving in english okay and final question um i remember with reveal math that we when i turned we got nickeled and dimed and we continued to a thousand years thousand years twelve thousand there so are we protected against that with the ela curriculum yes we made sure of that so we said okay final best and final and that's why we did the five year um contract with them so that it'll stay the same the only way we would have to pay more is if we get this huge influx of kids because i did budget for three kids above what we already have so if we get this increased enrollment it may go up a little bit but for the most part we're good yes budget revision number three you guys have
read this any motions move uh to approve budget revision number three basically a second discussion um couple sorry um i noticed that all that every item on the mmo budget changed except for the bottom line we just moved money between the various line items and that's what it is is we budget for certain things in certain areas and it doesn't happen that way so we move that money to where a need comes along so i i could be moving money again tomorrow out of something from one spot to another spot of need so yes pretty much everything within the mmo budget is changed yeah we you know except for the total except for the total it's still the same amount it's just reality okay um capital expenditures for technology declined by forty three thousand dollars
given what we got from uh we have social we have other sources so when you look at that technology you're looking into the 610 page okay so we had other sources to pay for those okay so we were able to reallocate those funds someplace else okay and last and the big one debt service i mean it like went uh from 200 and somewhat thousand dollars up to a million and a half i'm actually getting better figures from the county so that i can budget that for correctly actually um i think miss rico was on an email chain that i had with the county one you know after we got our bond refinancing done i asked them for give me everything that you have for for that fund 700 701 and there were tons of stuff
that we didn't receive from the county so so we may avoid something the thing that came out in the audit for the statement of the debt service last year okay this is alan yes mrs kaise yes mr mcgivin yeah technology and differentiation support okay look promotion perhaps so you have our rationale and so just wanting to restate the fact that as you saw mr marianas and all the infrastructure things that he supports and is in charge of in terms of our website our megabytes our phones the security the cameras securely um we really do need an instructional technology teacher that can help support teachers um even during testing time if computers aren't working then you know mrs huevos mr nathan mr mayanes are running around trying to help ensure that technology is working if the
teachers get frustrated if you know for some reason the curriculum is not popping up on the screen and sometimes it's very minor and it's an easy fix but we really do need someone that can work with our teachers in more of that coaching and being able to show that professional development in terms of instructional technology we've seen the roll out with rebuild mac and mrs has done a great job in assisting teachers in effective implementation which we're hoping with our new benchmark events it also is going to be an online curriculum with resources available so we really feel that mr marianas that our leadership team needs this support to help us in the teaching and learning side of the house and also with the differentiation of instruction in our plan to have professional development for
our teachers and how to differentiate not only for gifted students but looking for special needs students miss stacy shaffer bertram has been working in that area also in providing pd for spent teachers but we feel that this teacher can help with the professional development implementation in the classroom we put boots on the ground to say okay we learned this now let's see how you're using it in the classroom in real time like on-site tech support yes on-site tech support and then um adding to this differentiation differentiation piece to also help us with our reteach and enrich model that we are going to provide because we're going to provide services for our identified kids during that enrichment time as well and mr schubert has already looked at funding so we will be able to do twenty
percent out of title funds and eighty percent out of the minimum which is approximately twenty four thousand to our eminent budget so when you ask the amount of money that we're trying to allocate for a and differentiation would be that 24 000 or so because it is a teacher's salary so based on who applies and where they fall into place i just have a [Music] and not that i don't think we could use this position or that we may need this position i'm just not sure how this fits in with our strategic priorities if we spend this money here we're taking it away from somewhere else what if we hire two new teachers to get our student teacher ratio down we're making a decision to hire another certificate position here and i don't know how
it fits with our other strategic priorities that i think we need to look at and address i i'm struggling with just saying oh we need it so let's buy it i'm i see it more as you're taking stuff off the teacher's plate so they can you know have more mental bandwidth to help the kids i don't know what's that i see a real dichotomy in what we're trying to do here i see on one end where often we're offering avid and avid really doesn't even go toward using computers avid focuses on the note taking on organization skills and it doesn't focus at all in any of its strategies does not focus on computers and yet at the same time we pride ourselves and having gone one to one which is great but how much of
our in time in classroom are we really on computers because you just said yourself the student the fitness is too early we have a couple of baskets lined up with additional worksheets why would they have worksheets if we were one to one why would we do that yep [Music] and also as mr suevas is going there all of avid is digital so it's digital note-taking it's digital organization no it's not digital we have yes we have templates who have it and kids are doing note-taking that's not the technology of cornell note-taking it may be what you're doing well it's not necessarily cornell the cornell notes you can use cornell notes as your focus note taking template or you can do two column three columns it's it's what we decide to use in the classroom that
best fits what these kids are doing when you're talking about binders we talked about data binders if you go to a lot of other schools you'll see that have their binders full of their work so instead of having physical binders now everything is a digital binder something that's created and done on the computer which is really the digital portfolio that's the challenge that i'm having so that's when we talk about when you talk about using it digitally that's what we're using well i'm seeing it on the other side so i'm seeing the people that are coming out of our schools in our colleges and universities and i'm going to tell you straight up it's alarming it's alarming what i see and and i guess what i'm confused about is we're putting so much emphasis on
technology in the classroom where we're having to train our teachers to be able to do the work and have kind of tech support if you want to call it that i i get that but but the importance of the harvard study that i mentioned earlier today the importance of the interaction between the teacher and the student and and all of the studies are starting to come out and say the digital doesn't work and yet we seem to be really leaning heavily in that direction and i'm not opposed to have it i get it it's a set of strategies to learn how to learn it's to get yourself organized it's that structure that we probably all have had with our sons particularly in getting your homework back to school bringing it home getting it done and
getting it back to school the organization skills and good critical thinking skills and creative thinking all the competencies that we measure success by but i don't i feel like we really don't have a plan as to what we're going toward we seem to be doing a lot of different things but we can't say and this will be the outcome i don't see outcome-based education and we are working with generation network schools that's who we talked about and we are this summer developing the continental way of how everything comes together all of the systems all our curriculum how we align avid with the standards and what we're teaching so that will be a product that we will develop by the end of the summer working with generation network schools and our admin team because we we
have felt the same thing and we've had these conversations i see so many different products and i don't see how they're interrelated and i see us adding fte to try and support that and again my apologies i go back to the old school you know one teacher 25 students um you know i get that but i now work a lot with with organizations where we do have computers and when it comes down to creative thinking when it comes down to organization whether it's digital or it's a hard copy you know all of the things that you're talking about in avid i understand all those very well but then to go and add you know keep saying we're going to add more digital and more people i'm not i'm not seeing the benefit so i mean
i may be wrong i'm just i struggle i too struggle with this so just when i mentioned about the crazy that's when i started teaching i remember we weren't trained as to what to do with the students who were the quick finishers or so you would get you know extra work or extra worksheets and there was all these things back then before pinterest like you would people stuff and there was all these great ideas of how to increase you know assignments for your students that were the quick finishers so they wouldn't just be sitting there reading a book that's not necessarily what's happening here on our site but i was using that as an example so i love what you brought up about how everything seems like there's this this this this yeah so we
have an umbrella an umbrella that we're working with and what avid will do for our umbrella here as a site is if you think about the culture and climate of our school what are the things we do for culturing climate so for culture and climate we have the pbis program which is positive behavior interventions and supports okay then we have the math i mean benchmarks reteach enrich how does it flow um we'll have the start of the school year where we have students that are we have initial benchmarks we have their work that's coming up we have their weekly formative assessments it's like this web of things okay and then the next part is um there's there's so many pieces with avid that would be the top of our umbrella to piece where everything is
so you have the weekly formative assessments a scope and sequence that teachers are supposed to be following standards state blueprint for our core content areas that would fall under the instruction piece of the avid umbrella then you have pbis that would fall under the culture piece of the avid umbrella um we have there's three other pieces here we have the instruction what is our curriculum here at the site how do we expect the teachers to utilize the curriculum to um do their collaboration when they have collaboration daily is it just sitting in we don't know what's going on there's going to be those expectations for those monthly collaboration notes that they have to give to us so we know what we need to support that would then fall under the instructional piece of the abbey
umbrella so we're trying our next step and i'm glad that that we are having this conversation is to now we've had all of these pieces and all of these things it's now to make them align and for this position here it's okay we have newsela that we've that's been approved for us and our teachers to utilize which is a great resource for our teachers to have you have i excel which you hear a lot about and you have um i'm forgetting i'm forgetting another one right now well we're going to have reveal yeah this is what's important right now is there there's these things that when i got here that the the district has like you've mentioned there's all these pieces and what do we do to make them fit is it's just like oh
here we have new zealand here we have excel there's amazing pieces to this puzzle that need to be taught and coached to our teachers and sometimes it's it's throughout the day so for i excel teachers were just assigning when it first began you know exciting this is the area we're at we're doing area perimeters we're going to assign area perimeter on excel so they have additional enrichment or interventions now this year with the help of speaking to one of our teachers here she was studying through it which we were looking because this is just an example with i excel it's constantly changing that program is constantly changing how can we utilize it so it's not just busy work so it's intentional so when the teachers roster their students they get their benchmarks done it automatically
i excel automatically filters in our map data filters into ixl so i excel then matches exactly what the students need so when we do we teach enrich students aren't just doing busy work it's work unique to their exact needs based off of their benchmark data newsela is the same way muzella it can link to the student but yeah we are a one-to-one district and with avid when i taught avid years ago avid was everything paper-based everything was paper based you had the binders which we've been discussing now it's digital binders it's digital portfolios of the students taking accountability for their work posting creating their stuff digitally and that's important because in the real world that's what we're doing every day everything is digital so being able to facilitate not not everything no not everything is
no but you know what i just i understand everything you're saying but 51 of our fifth grade students in reading got low or very low and some of those students on maps the whole class is going to be retesting because they hadn't triggered them for finishing too quick and we're going to be retesting some of those students which is what matt allows us to do when we can see that students have gone too quickly because they're just pressing to finish well and 43 of those same students uh they were low or very low in math yeah so and i mean i went through and ran the percentages here this is just shocking i mean what is this first grade 43 of our kids can't read i mean basically that's what this is telling me and
if i go to third grade which i know all the research and all the studies tell me that if you can't read in third grade you're headed down a bad path and in third grade they're at 61 64 and 63 in language usage so we're getting we're making waves it might not be as quick as we want to make those waves but we're making them so if we can continue next year they should be in the 70s by fifth grade there shouldn't be a dive there shouldn't be a drop where they're dropping where we had a slide of seven students from winter to now now we have 18 students 20 students that should not be happening so our tests are all digital the state assessments are all digital and that's something that you know we
have to prepare the kids for because everything that we are tested on everything that we are held to in the state of arizona through arizona department of education is digital instruction because that's what they end up testing us on so it is a big part of what we're doing here so it's taking a test digital it's not digital instruction but there's for taking a test digitally is different than digital instruction taking a test digitally is different i mean our kids are taking their tests online yes that's not digital instruction it doesn't mean they know how to use it i mean it doesn't mean that they know how to i mean i look at our very own excel sheets here and i think my gosh those numbers have been hand jammed into that spreadsheet i can
go in the background and i look and there's just a few formulas and that's not how you use excel so i mean i i guess that my only concern is i don't want us to go so far into digital instruction that we lose that that that relationship between the student and the teacher in the interaction and and you know that i think that's what it really comes down to and that's if you look at any organization the problems we're having in organization isn't that people can't come in and use software the people is they can't the problem is they gather and communicate with each other communicating interpersonal communication skills um you know the ability to give a presentation without reading the slide you never do that so i guess that's kind of what i'm looking
at when i see we keep adding fte but we need to we need to take a holistic approach to this i if i may just add nickels worth i if there's anybody on this board who's anti put a computer in their face it's me i i think textbooks are the way to go but obviously i'm living in a you know 20 years ago i i have to i have to realize that that's not how it's going to be down the road i also realized when i when i went to the uh the classroom tours a couple months ago i also realized that one teacher spending three or four minutes figuring out something wrong on a computer or what's not on the screen that should be is very valuable time wasted in my mind i can
support a position that would help them get that done now if it gets to the point where we have to have a whole department to do that then i think that's i agree that's a little more i think that's really large if it in my mind if this person is efficient at their job wherever this may be efficient at their job it helps the teacher spend more time doing what miss kaiser said um being more of a one-to-one teacher instead of having their face at a computer screen trying to figure out why this doesn't work and this isn't plugged in in that i mean i think it's a gamble worth taking at this point beyond this i would have a hard time probably uh supporting it much more but but don't we have a technology
director now that's handling some is happening in the classroom there are a lot of classrooms there yeah and i think that would uh take a lot of work i don't think one teacher is going to be able to fix it because the purpose of hiring this teacher is so that he can go back to his administrative duties so it's still just one teacher no not and so i just want to clarify when we talk about digital instruction so if you notice during our walkthroughs we are still heavily focused on teacher questioning higher level questioning student interaction student engagement teachers not selecting one student at a time how do we optimize that time and it's the instruction being delivered effectively but they may be going on to the computer to demonstrate and answer the questions that
are being solved or so it's not just we don't just put students on a computer and say go forth and do because there is instruction deliberate instruction that occurs prior to the okay now logged into so it's like your digital curriculum student workbook so you know they go in and the pages align to the curriculum so if you find go to page 23 you'll see it on the computer and you can put in your answers and do your work there which is submitted to the teacher right away to get results versus the let me do it on a piece of paper turn it in and the teacher has to take it home and grade it so it's optimizing the efficiency of the teacher's ability to also be able to modify instruction as needed but it's
also optimizing the digital resources that we have in terms of ixl and zella to make sure that teachers are using them appropriately to update so we could get a bigger bank for our but to make sure that they're following up on the standards so who's in charge of that right now he has to do all of it no i don't know i mean not right i did a large part of it yeah yeah no it's this is it's mr nate was available to try and figure it out it's the professional development in instructional where we teach the teachers but we need help to be able to have someone who can be in the classrooms rotating on a regular basis setting the team meeting agenda to say today we're going to talk about we're going to
do pd on new zela and let's divide and conquer and let's differentiate for even our teachers on their level of implementation so that we could get everybody up to speed at the same time so that's our plan i just think that our instructional support budget is getting bigger and bigger as it relates to the instruction budget and we're adding staff we added the math coach i'm not saying we don't need this position i'm just not convinced that we absolutely need it now when we haven't put together our budget for the next school year yet um to to see how this fits in to whether we ought to be spending more money hiring more teachers or on the on the instruction side of the budget as opposed to the support side of the budget i i
again i'm not i'm not saying that we don't need this position i'm just not prepared to say that we need to do it today and i would argue that this is the most important piece of what we're what's missing in order for us to move forward next year and looking at our data supports the fact that we need additional help in order if we're going to implement our gifted and talented when you look at our students that are falling far below and average versus our high students we need additional support for our teachers and it's clear in the climate surveys where they they don't understand the infrastructure piece of what albert has to do in terms of the teaching and learning board we have an instructional technology committee and the teachers identify the need but
they're in the classrooms teaching so they can't have that impact out you know to influence everybody because they're in the classrooms working so we really need most schools have a math coach a reading coach a technology coach and we have we have a math coach which we didn't have that's a new position for us and when we look at the feedback from the teachers on the rollout and the pd specific to math that mrs colett has been able to do they they need more support so i clarify that i just want to be clear that the math position is the math coach is not a new position to our district we've had it for a long time and went on filled because we didn't have any interest in applicants for several years so it may
seem new mr rory um because if you came in we felt we're able to fill that with one of our own that we kind of worked for several years because we saw no interest and we built that capacity within our own staff to fill that spot but we did have for several years previous to that we did have a math coach going back previous to me even being in administration i i'd like to say something as the millennial in the room um speaking of like climate surveys and stuff a good um okay let's look at internet memes my kids make fun of me for calling them internet memes i guess they're just memes um every third or fourth one posted by a teacher or anyone in education is some kind of joke about how um
people just keep piling on top of them and they have to carry all of these plates balance all of these balls and wear all of these different hats and that's why teachers are leaving the industry and this position takes one of those hats off am i correcting that well mr also you were here when we presented to our staff that we were proposing this position how was what was their reaction they were all smiles and um applause this may not make any sense but to behind every soldier how much support staff is there tons right so the actual soldiers in the field is a minuscule part of we're sitting right here for 100 staff members right yeah so hang on i think we've probably beaten this don't let him confuse you greg we know you're
a marine thank you ma'am i knew you were right i've been trying i've been trying to be better at more meetings i'm not correcting i didn't want you to have to say anything sir all right i think it's time for a real classroom this is alan yes mrs yes mr mcgivern yes mr rashford no and we have some new items which is were pulled from the consent agenda the first one is item c is in charlotte the statue agreement between continental and uh oh so i'll okay a motion [Music] i'll make a motion to approve the staffing agreement between uh continental and esa discussion this was see here the staffing agreement kind of i just want to make sure i'm on the right thing um the only reason i wanted this pulled is i just
want to understand process a little bit on this thing and i'm probably being overly influenced by the debacle in pima county uh with the executive that retired and hired and then didn't tell anybody and so on and so forth this contract must be approved between us and esi before we can or any one of our employees can in essence become a contractor um but any employee that wants to become either through a retired rehire process to become a contract employee that will also have to be approved would that contract then be able to be amended or are we absolutely frozen into this agreement that we are in conjunction with esi on so this is the staffing agreement between us and that basically it's stating that if we have a retiree who wishes to come back
to work this is the agreement for the district and the company that they will abide by now the actual teacher contract or employee contract will come at a later date when and if we actually have an employee that retires and retires right so that's it necessary if we wanted to could that contract or the actual employee be amended when it's presented to us or are we stuck with what we approve here and the reason i bring this up is i think we made a change in mrs rico's uh esi agreement we did so this is just a step so this is just a staffing agreement that gets done every year the contract itself it's just like any other contract it's open to negotiations okay so we could say oh i would like this change for
this particular person when that's presented at a later date yes thank you why is it negotiated through mohammed economy because it's it did how can i put this when you're doing a retiree card contract it's already going to be above the procurement limit for to go out for bids and things like that um there were two companies that were doing retiree hire within the state of arizona it was esi and smart schools esi bought smart schools so because it is a procurement that is over the 10 000 limit they have a mojave contract so that nobody has to go through and get it and get bids and everything else to go to do them here and and pima has an interagency agreement or continentalism interagency agreement with mojave that we can do that yes yes
we belong to the mojave procurement system just about everything that we do within food is done through mojave because they have contracts with shamrock and u.s foods a lot of the other procurements that we do are done through mojave because what mohave does is they send out the rfb's okay mojave goes through and they do all the due diligence and everything else and then we as a district do our diligence on what they have done yeah and so it's just an easier procurement for districts yeah it's a multiple award schedule and we buy off of it correct and they've already negotiated their rate with mojave so and they're in the rate for something like an esi is their their performance fee so you know going through mojave they can charge up four percent um be
on the contract whereas they do it through one gpa which is another procurement source you know one gpa they could be approved four and a half percent so just whatever's best for the district is which procurement contract you would go for yes mr mcgivern yes mr ashley all right yes okay now we're going to go down to the new 13e is edward which is actually e on the consent agenda additional days for the principal and student service director so we can work them 10 more days a year so we need a motion i move to approve additional days for principal and student services director secretary discussion please well if i'm not mistaken this is the second or third year that we've done this and so my question is should this be a year-round contract and
we don't have to address this anymore part of the reason why they're not year-round employees is because they would be limited to their days off in the summer and we've talked about the fact that they both have children and families that want to take their vacations that would exceed more than 10 days in the summer that they would not be able to do and it is more cost effective for the district to pay them the per diem for 10 days because if they become month employees then they would receive vacation time and they would be technically 21 days of vacation time so they're gone a whole month and a half which was the which is what would happen before when we had the prior principal she was on your contract and she would be gone
all of june and part of july and not available to help with summer school or special days that we had designated together to work on and i see the days that they're going to do that during summer school it's dirty so they get to flex their days so that we can so they can tag team summer school and our when i talk about our work with generation schools network and our prep for the school year is when they'll have that flexibility for us to do our admin retreat and for us to do our summer work as well so we don't want to we don't want to set policy on personality or preference right we want to set policy on what's best for the organization yes so if what you're telling me is that in the
past you've had year-round principles and it was not successful then that's good enough for me yes and i think that there may be a time in the next you know upcoming years where they may come and say they are would like a 12-month contract and they're ready for it well that's that's setting policy on preference and personality and we don't want to do that so if they're if you're saying in the future then you know because it's it's mr lathan and mrs cuevas we may want to do that that's policy and preference it'll be based on organizational needs it'll be based on need and budget so there is not a need now for a year-round principle no i think we've got a year-round superintendent here okay all right this is gentlemen yes mrs yes mr
mcgivern yes mr you're doing a great job you're almost done you're doing good so we're looking for a motion on the uh overnight traveling um i'll move to approve this uh 13f agenda i'll second okay i think there's probably discussion since we moved it well i i pulled this one from the consent agenda because it feels like like just signing a blank check i think part of the responsibility of the board is oversight of finances and as oversight of finances i think understanding when and where different trainings are going um where different trainings are who's going how many are attending things like that i think that it is our responsibility to have oversight of that and to monitor and control that funding this is just signing a blank check so what typically happens um annually
this is common practice and where you approve the administration because the conferences that come up through asba or through the trust or through arizona school administrators this is the time where they start to give early registration they start to get agendas out to get lower rates than waiting until the actual conference occurs but we do notify the board of conferences that are coming up the cost and where everybody so putting together a travel budget with all of that data would be an effective use and then asking us to approve an amount maybe not to exceed a hundred thousand dollars wouldn't be inappropriate then no except for a lot of times we don't know and again it's based on what's being what conference it is what's being presented who are the best people to go so
it's hard to predict do we need two people are we gonna send three people but that's what good budgeting is good budgeting is predicting what the needs of the organization are making a forecast and then managing the budget this is just asking for an approval for whatever comes up over the next year all the asba contracts or conferences for next year are planned we know what they're going to be they're going to have a law conference in september they're going to have a fall conference in december they're going to i mean we already know this uh we know that they're going to be at different locations we know there'll be a summer conference and we don't know and like when you look at reading professional development and the math professional i mean we could put
that together but in terms of being able to have this approved so that we can start to plan and look at what what's going to happen and where we're going to go and what we're going to what we're going to do like i said it's standard approval and then we can um propose a budget to you i don't recall proving something like this before which is what kind of threw me yeah no it's it's every year that monika rolled this over from prior board meetings so it's something that she does every year well i think you know greg's done an amazing job with finances he moves money around he knows how to do this we saw that tonight with budget revision number three so i don't think asking for a proposed travel budget and doing
some forecasting would be unreasonable up on the screen there's your travel budget and your and everything else it's under s6800 category that's where all that travel comes from that's where conferences are paid for for hotels for overnight stays are basically so your own you already have that so when you submit a budget to us on june 3rd that projection is already going to be in there and we would approve it so why would we approve this now you're not all you're improving so generally when we have students leave campus we have the board to make that approval for field trips what we're asking you to do is approve mr maggianes to go to tucson for the asvil conference in june for him to go to the asbo conference in laughlin that's all that's all this
is this is but you're going to put it in the budget that you give us on june 3rd that number's already going to be in there and that line item 6800 yeah so why are we double approving it you're not approving you're approving the physical travel you're proving this rico to go to phoenix for an azialis conference you're approving mr lane to go to flagstaff for a taa conference that's that's what we're asking for in this approach what we're really asked what you're really asking is that we give the support to the administration to make the travel decisions for the staff that's what we're really trying to do yes and i don't okay so if we're only asking for the authority um superintendent rico has the trust of this board to make decisions to allocate
her resources as she sees necessary i think we've said that all along i'd hate to start handcuffing you now but this is a standard beginning of the school year request for districts because schools cannot we in terms of auditing purposes we cannot issue pos for any travel prior to governing board approval of certain people going certain places so then you are asking us we're asking you yes to approve the travel for the barrier in these cases yes so but we do let you know what's coming who's going when we ask about asda so you're approving the funding when you approve the budget exactly okay but this is the approval for the employee to be absent from physically being here at the district at this location and being someplace else to be at a conference because
that's what this ask is right and so my point of discussion will be that i have full confidence that you will utilize your resources in the best manner possible to attend functions okay this is alan yes mr kai yes mr mcgivin yes mr ashley yes all right on that of 14 board of school events i believe barbas went over these um earlier our next meeting is on june the 13th any comments on the agenda if you want to come play with fire truck water come here on uh half day on the 19th ms cuevas would you tell us one more time when the concert is yes the concert is this wednesday no i'm sorry it's it's yes it is yes it's this wednesday it sits in the gym i did update updates and times on
the weekly news where it says important upcoming dates i put times in for the preschool little promotions the eighth grade promotion everything i i input the times to date so that way you have not just the dates but everything that's going on in the times that they take place thank you and number 15 is um future agenda looks like we've been talking about doing governing board goals so yep kind of time to put up your shut up yep right so we're proposing uh may 31st or june 1st okay there's a vote for the first you guys yeah [Music] uh preferably afternoon morning too busy i don't care anytime after like two is fine doesn't matter that in the morning for me my friend can come here three o'clock in the first place looking at a
two-hour session three-hour session [Music] and then um we can probably wrap that up at our retreat which uh we're just kicking around july 8th or 11th it's going to be a good half day yes at least four hours can monica make that lunch again yes definitely have provide food so the 8th is a wednesday no the eighth is a friday and the 11th is on monday and that's our our board meeting july 11th so i wasn't sure if that would be too long of a day first have a retreat and then go into a board meeting so so within my extended release so the eighth of the friday that's the week of july 4th so monday would be a holiday right if we have a lot of people being out of i don't know no
everybody's usually back by tuesday or wednesday and then we have a board meeting on the 11th so um can you make the one o'clock shelly on that day because i know with your work schedule yeah i i think so i don't know the eighth we're talking about yes so we'll see can we say one to five yeah and we can talk about it i mean the next one first okay okay perfect so it's july 8th on friday okay [Music] that's about it any uh discussion um i know you have an announcement so may 26th the buses will be delivered um to campus and i would like at the next board meeting if that's available for you guys maybe a little bit earlier before meeting start so you guys can walk through them and see them
and see our new deliveries five of the six months of dating again may 26th is the delivery date from tucson to canvas five of the six buses will be delivered on that day the uh sped bus has to go through some uh state regulations to make it regulated in the state um in regards to the wheelchair um where the wheelchair snapped in where this the buckles and stuff this wraps um and then it's got to get a step installed for one of our students for their iep um so we're looking that must probably be here it'll be here way before school starts but probably knowledge on this venue okay this is somewhere in all these dates yes okay yeah that would be good my notes are golf here can we afford the diesel for those
anymore now that we've purchased them oh my god yeah i have confidence in our yes related but i'll have all the right now the next board meeting we'll have our buses up here so you guys can walk through them okay discussion um i just like to say i'm sorry mr cruz was in here to receive his award my son used to take taekwondo from him oh he is just such a good role model and influence for kids um he always at the end of every class he would always say make sure you thank your parents for bringing you here they didn't have to bring you here this is a privilege and just all kinds of stuff like that so sweet guy thank you mr mcginner uh just hats off to everyone that took care of
the kids in dc uh to me that seems like hurting a bunch of straight cats it's going to be a lot of fun we said that a couple of times actually yeah it seems like those words anyway nice job there's no way i could have ever done it that's up to you um i unless i didn't get that issue of the green valley news i don't recall seeing any press release about the refinancing of the bonds is it funny you mentioned that we had a little you don't have that news briefs in the middle it was in there so i called the publisher and said we need and it was the same day they had a yoga teacher going to a contest on the front page and i said you can't get us on the
front page she knows i mean we need to get something up to jamie who talked to greg so i'll circle with her again how many governmental entities ever tell the great taxpayers that we just saved you money i think we need to really trump this uh yeah and the public needs to know what we've done here yeah um and he sent her the press release too yeah and it's gone nowhere i noticed on some policies on some policy we're required to send a letter or a notice to every employee giving their total compensation including all their benefits and and everything that we've done there yes we actually i got it set up two weeks ago could we see a copy of one of those with the employee's name whacked i'd appreciate that and lastly i'd
just like to uh give mr mcgivin uh some kudos uh boy i saw his kids and their cattle at the fair on april 30th and man i was impressed uh uh you know he's got uh i mean number one the the cattle weren't as good looking as his kids are but uh but but i enjoyed seeing the uh the livestock it's good seeing it [Music] and now we get to sign
