008the next meeting will be on December 5th that concludes our committee reports for this evening thank you T next we have reports from board members and the superintendent we'll start with you Jody um yeah just uh you know having attended the communications board advisory committee Dei board uh advisory committee uh and the best committee um or the last month um I love how um it's a great venue to um have Community input so we really have some great great discussions best with our business Community um Communications and Dei with our patrons and and uh staff and and students in some case so it's really great um shout out to all the school plays that are going on right now in musicals uh went to the Tempest last weekend uh it was fantastic I'm not sure

009I got all of it because you know Shakespeare's kind of special so um but it was absolutely amazing I know there's a lot of great stuff going on and I think maybe is there a few this coming weekend too yeah so please remember um to uh think about maybe doing date night or night out uh with one of our high school or even Middle School uh plays um attended at Aubrey Bend I was invited to uh watch presentations for um brain injury um from students uh so we walked around um a space and and uh students uh presented their own findings it was uh fascinating um I loved um asking the students like what was the best part of this what did you learn and um they were all incredibly engaged in that project so

010it was a lot of fun uh last but not least on my list here prize Patrol uh boy that was a heck of a fun experience um my group was an hour late uh compared to everyone else's it's just because we were doing such great things I'm sure we're just a little slow um so it was it was a lot of fun but that allows I mean the District covers a lot this priz Patrol gives uh staff and teachers an opportunity to kind of think outside of the box a little bit kind of go above and beyond so we did some really great uh presentations of funding for different robotics programs um so um it was it was a a lot of fun so I think that's all I have all right move on to

011Jim uh so this morning we had um a really kind of mey presentation on uh test score assessment data and I thought I'd just tell a little story because I decided this afternoon to go and look at just one grade because I I feel like um it's something that we need to acknowledge and recognize um some of the work of our curricul team and Dr marrian um so I just looked up e8th grade math going back nine years and um their our state assessment tests are have four levels one being the lowest four being the highest and if you go back nine years um in Blue Valley which is the highest um the highest School District in the state uh we had 53% of our students in eth grade in math score at the top

012two levels okay and then you see a trend across the state across the country of declining performance that go kind of goes like this um and then it kind of bottoms out at Co and um and then depending on the school district you see it start to come back up but not back to where it was nine years ago and so I'm just going to read off these numbers so you can picture it in your mind because I think it's an amazing accomplishment actually um went from 53 this is just annual sted in 20156 53 52 48 46 Co it didn't have an assessment then the year after covid 21 30% 37% and 22 41% and 23 48 % in 24 which gets us back up to or slightly above where we were in the

01327 2018 school year um and it's a testament to a lot of the work that the that um Katie klier and Kelly Jun and Dr marrian and many others on the team have done um and um I just wanted to recognize it so I appreciate all the work that you guys have done for the students of this community I don't know how you follow that Jen yeah so we we'll have you follow it thank you madam president um I along with a couple of others uh as Jody eluded The Pride Squad it's actually a surprise Squad we distributed almost a quarter million in Grants to teachers throughout the district and I think did we get one to every school somebody in every school but if not every but pretty close uh and these are teachers

014who are going above and beyond uh just you know putting in their day's work these are extra things they want to be able to do to enhance uh the students learning experience and it it's just it's a wonderful wonderful thing to be able to do and you hand out these big checks and uh you see a lot of emotion there where they realize that they are being supported by the community and Blue Valley Ed Foundation uh went to Blue Valley wck meeting we didn't really have anything to report other than keep on keeping on although they're concerned looking down the road about funding and bond issue for their uh PTO presidents uh which Christie talked about what we did in that meeting I was a judge at at uh Deca uh Regional contest that Deca

015is for entrepreneurship of students in areas of marketing Finance Management and Hospitality uh it's just amazing what what the students are given a case study and they've get a half hour to put together a plan in response to that case study what will they do um an example would be uh you're consultant to a retail uh clothing store and you know Trends are changing how do you how how do we reach the uh the new consumer the younger consumer and they come up with plans and it's it it's just a great experience and it gives me a lot of confidence in the future of uh um the students and the community and then uh also went to the communications committee which we heard about and that's what I did thank you Jan clay all right

016uh first I want to thank um Dr Todd Mr Billingsley Miss Weaver and Miss sheets for coming up and speaking at public comments um it's always good to have some feedback and I encourage um them and anyone who's interested if they'd like to have a sit down with members of the board to join us at a community connection and then we're that's a good opportunity for us to have dialogue so if any of you are interested in that um our next one is December 5th um at 6 PM right here in this room um over the past month since the last meeting I've attended many of the committee meet board advisory meetings that uh we went over Student Activities um facility planning curriculum and instruction and finance also attended the the um Suicide Prevention coalition's

017meeting last or yes last month um I had a date night Romeo and Juliet at Blue Valley West fantastic show encourage you this is date night time very cheap take your dates um surprise Squad fantastic I was with Jody's group and um yes we it was a long long morning morning but that was okay it was a lot of fun we actually the team there were four buses that went out across the district and it gave out $423,000 across the district um 156 individual grants and it brings the total that blue valley Ed Foundation the total grants they've given up to $9.1 million since their Inception which is a true Testament to the support this community has for our schools so I'm grateful for everyone that's here everyone that contributes um just the support you

018give our students and our Educators so thank you for that um continued my tours my visits went over to Stanley Elementary Valley Park Elementary and Blue Valley North so shout outs to the wildcast Panthers and Mustangs um and I should mention that I also attended a couple benefits for um the Tiny Tim benefit and the infant toddler Services fall ball these are two they support the be Smith Center and the Britain Development Center um and the infant toddler Services these are all services in our County in our County in our community that help parents with young children with severe um special needs develop any anything from devel devel velopmental uh delays to um really serious physical impairment so these two organizations are fantastic resources and very grateful to have them in our community so that

019wraps us thank you clay Patrick thank you madam president um I want to follow up on Jim's uh comment about the assessment scores we went through those today over the last several years another Accolade that staff should be complemented for as well that information um about math and reading over the years uh his valuable tool for staff to plan and and know where uh the needs of the individual student population is at that time the thing that remained fairly constant was the number of kids going to school college or uh two-year or four-year programs and this and the percentage of kids also graduating remained fairly constant during that same 10e period of time with uh minimal minimal dip or or none at all so that's a huge accomplishment even despite uh the uh times we

020went through for covid so staff should also be complimented and for all that hard work despite the challenges that they faced thank you Patrick Sonia like my other board members I partic participated in several committee advisory committee Endeavors uh the curriculum and instruction committee the de and also um I'm a part of the strategic planning committee as well and I have to say that our stakeholders in our community they are very involved and they're coming up with some very very good ideas and solutions for the district um and also I'd like to piggyback on uh Jodie and Jan and Clay as far as the surprise Squad that's one of the highlights of my year the surprise Squad because the kids they are surprised they don't know that we're coming in there and when we come

021in there there's a lot of excitement and they're screaming and then when their teacher gets awarded or oversized check these kids are so excited and I just love that and uh that's one of the highlights in this District I enjoy participating in and and um I did on October the 17th I visited uh Prairie Star Elementary and Stanley Elementary and I just like to give a shout out to Stacy sper Prairie Star Elementary we went through there they're getting a a vending machine where the kidos can earn tokens and they going to be books in that vending machine they earn these tokens for being nice or something that that's out of the ordinary and then they can go to the vending machine and get aook book and I thought that was awesome so I'd just

022like to give a shout out to uh Stacy Sperry for doing that that's very creative and ingenious thank you Sonia Dr Maran I do if you guys will put up brief presentation so we have lots of things to celebrate since the last time we met um so in your mailboxes you should have had the champions of learning uh publication uh that went out to all people who live within the Blue Valley School District so thanks to our Communications team for getting that put out um speaking of Stacy sper there she is so uh joining me on our um podcast BV unmuted was uh Leah vomhof who was a blue valley Northwest principal Stacy sper who's pictured here who was the prar elementary principal and Dr Corey Cox who's the Blue Valley North assistant principal for

023curriculum and instruction and we talked about the importance of School attendance um for all students and uh it was it was a great um 20 minutes to hear from those practitioners of why they want uh to have our students in school as absolutely much as possible it doesn't mean we want kids to come when they're sick by any means uh but really the importance of them being there and the U relationships and the help that we can give if a student is struggling so I would encourage people to listen to that um the Education Foundation here's a picture uh surprise Squad went out uh gave $423,000 worth of Grants and that money has been raised Again by from our community and businesses so thank you to our community for that uh these are our recognition

024dates in holidays um that you can see lots of different ones in here it's Veterans Day obviously today you heard about school psychology you heard about American Education um but there's some other ones in here substitute educator day and then just as a reminder we are the Blue Valley school districts are closed during the week of Thanksgiving um but that is coming up I can't believe how fast this semester's gone two weeks until Thanksgiving uh the communications department and we we will actually have them all here in person next time I think but um kbur is the Kansas Public Relations Association and they won um nine Awards in their publication contest of school districts across the state submit different Publications that they've done and I got the list of winners and I was like christe

031this evening this is a a first read so Kelly I turned it to you good evening my name is Kelly June and I am here to share the proposed course changes for the 2526 school year so we do this every year in November I just want to remind everyone of the process and where we're at uh tonight's items were uh the origin started in September uh when teachers or teams of teachers put forth proposals to change programming for our students um this year here um we have a few in the high school and a few in middle school which I'll share um they've been vetted by our assistant principles for uh curriculum instruction and our counselors uh and they've been discussed at the uh cni advisory committee uh two times so they're we're coming in

032for a landing here you can see where we are in the process tonight's informational and then we would ask for your um consideration in December for the changes so I'm going to head straight into them um this is an ad we're asking to add three classes honors chamber singers honors Wind Ensemble or Wind Ensemble I don't know why it says Orchestra it should say Ensemble and honors chamber Symphony um these are three uh weighted credit courses and teachers in each of these three disciplines choir band and Orchestra are proposing a semester long honors course for students interested in pursuing a career or College coursework in music uh many programs at College require students to submit a repertoire Vita and this course would be nested um in the regular course and then students would have the

033added coursework to build their repertoire vaita and they would fully participate in in their Ensemble group um and have that additional work unique would be this course is not repeatable but uh and teachers anticipate interested students would take advantage of this opportunity in the spring of their junior year so it gives them an extra extra time to get those ready for um application process the following year the uh next one on the the screen is peer tutor um this course proposal is just a name change nothing of the content will change staff have asked that the peer tutor name be changed up your mentor to better reflect the course and the activities that happen in these classes uh this is a great class and it pairs uh students with and without IEPs For mentorship assistance

034with homework uh courses and SM relationship building so it's just a name change uh CTE is interesting this year and the next ones I'm going to share with you are um all in the area of CTE and this year is really unique each year the state department reviews and changes the requirements for CTE courses uh change changes are usually communicated sometime in late summer however this year we just recently got those changes so we're working through what all that means um bottom line is to remain compliant with the state and continue to receive the funding we're required to align our courses so teachers are meeting this week so after tonight uh to with Adam wessell to work and determine what the next steps are so for now I'm going to share our best estimate of

035what the changes will be um and we'll communicate uh the FI the teachers final proposals in an Insider article soon I don't anticipate um a lot of change from here but we will see what they have to say um after you receive that information don't uh hesitate to reach out to me or Adam if you have any questions about these um so for these course changes that this is the best information that I have right now the first of these three courses are relate to our Woods courses at the state level there's been some changes that EXP expand the umbrella under which the wood program fits and the proposals here reflect this in all cases the new course names are names provided by ksde so for this first one this changes the introductory level course

036from Woods one to a more of a survey course called introduction to skills skilled traits uh this course adds an additional learning on Career exploration in the construction industry and a blueprint reading and it continues to have a strong emphasis on safety and proper equipment use the next one is Woods 2 um this propose proposed change title would be to woodworking principles another title provided to us by the state uh this one the content remains much the same uh and aligned to current course number three Woods three they have something on Woods this year um the updated State title would be Advanced Materials and Fabrication and it the competencies remain um very very similar broadens the the scope a little bit but the title obviously is new next um we have the uh the architecture

037strand there's lots of changes here um one number the first one here is to add a course named drafted and print reading um it's in the Construction and design pathway and the design strand we have proposed this because it is now the new required introductory course for that pathway and it includes not only Drafting and some print reading but also additional career exploration so that would be a new course because of that new introductory course it kind of shifts all the other ones um so the next one is this uh this is another change related to the construction design pathway it's that's needed to maintain our alignment to kstd e um so we would add Drafting and architecture one and it would replace drafting 2 architecture I know it's really really technical but it's a

038one of the states thing and it would follow the drafting print reading I just mentioned it's essentially a name change for us our content is already uh really aligned to this new course title last in this strand you can see a them here finally the third in the series is drafting architecture 2 um this course would be would complete the pathway changes for the design strand uh the course content will change to some degree from our Pro our previous drafting three um and it'll be very much more of an application Level class uh they'll use what they've learned in the two previous courses and apply their learning in architecture projects so those are the high school ones I'll stop there if there's any questions on any of those I also just want to make a

039note that uh if you looked in what's posted um what Kelly presented is just slightly different and we'll get this updated one posted in there as well but things changed today so she wanted to present the most accurate information to you thank you any questions great all right on to Middle School programming I do have some proposed changes for middle school math programming um these changes are honestly really exciting uh because they represent evidence that are student students continue success our ma in math and our teachers leaning into the rigor as a strategy to improve outcomes for all I say all the credit goes to our teachers uh on the success that has happened over the last couple years they are not 100% satisfied and they continue to look for ways to improve and this

040is one of their suggestions so in the course of just routinely every year we we go through adoptions and this year we're looking at 8th grade algebra 1 um teachers in that process um are recommending an an adjustment to the approach to se sixth and seventh grade advanced math to better prepare students for the rigors of Algebra 1 um additionally they are recommending course title changes uh the teachers are proposing that we make five course CH course changes um first is to change the onlevel courses from integrated math 6 7th and 8th to just math 6th 7th and 8th uh we've received feedback that the integrated can be somewhat confusing and has some maybe unhelpful connotations and they're also proposing that the cont the advanced classes change also it has changed since I've turned this

041one in so instead of advanced integrated math 6 which is a mouthful where the teachers are proposing it to be accelerated math 6 No7 just accelerated math 6 and accelerated math seven no changes to the um algebra and course why they have identified that there are some um they want to change the approach So currently if when students take the advanced track they skip content and they are advocating to change to a compacting model um if the graph up there kind of explains it a little bit so there are math standards for sixth grade seventh grade grade and eighth grade standards in your onlevel classes you will do the rigorous sixth grade work the rigorous seventh grade and the rigorous eth their proposal is to change the upper level the advanced classes to do three

042years worth of content six seven and eight in two years so compacting so for next year which would be the first year that this would happen in MA accelerated math 6 they would do all of sixth grade standards and half of seven and then the following year they'd finish up seven do all of eight and be really Prime for Algebra 1 so not only is it a name change but there there would be some content it's really an approach change instead a skip content it's compact content so we're working through all those ideas and and what people think but that that is what they're proposing any questions on that it's pretty exciting stuffff just to clarify um up on the screen on the it says sl7 sl8 we're getting rid of that right yep yep

043it would just say accelerated math 6 accelerated math 7 yep yep that we originally started here and the teachers actually um proposed the Slash and then we came and got more feedback mainly from parents and Board of Ed cni and principles and they recommended removing the slash to make it very clear For Whom the class like it's a sixth grade math class but it's accelerated so is e8th grade just algebra one for the upper level yes on the onlevel track it would be math 8 which would cover 8th grade Kansas standards correct Yep this is exciting cuz um this really would it R we say riger up it really rigers up our advanced classes and it's only possible because what of the work that everybody's done in the onlevel classes so this actually isn't time

044for a public comment I apologize um but thank you for the question and please be sure to email them to ask absolutely um one question is I know currently in the middle schools you can be in seventh grade and maybe you didn't take accelerated math in sixth grade but in seventh grade you say I I think I can do that you know and so the kid can move in seventh grade to accelerated math do you have to in this model do you have to get into honors math or accelerated math in sixth grade now we will continue to offer kind of a jump up we do that now during the summer we have if a kiddo wants to go from the onlevel class to the the advanced class which would be accelerated we will continue

045to offer that opportunity um the jump will be higher but we'll continue to off offer that you know I we would never want to um have a kid make a decision in the spring of fifth grade year that locks them in somewhere so I don't want to predetermine any of that yep it's a great question thank you do you have many students in seventh grade who are in will be taking Al one seventh grade yes we have a handful that they would be we consider them double accelerated so you just move them up to the eighth grade alra one class they would just take the next class we would wave this in so this would take effect for the sixth grade class only next year and then we would fill some gaps that we've identified

046for that one year and then the next year we'd bring on accelerated math 7 so we'd kind of wave through over two years yep so thank you anything else this is pretty cool all right um yep just contact me if you have any questions and we'll make sure to get you the the information on the CTE courses um as soon as we have a final proposal thanks you thank you troop 222 all right so next up um we have policy 3122 and so I'm going to let Kyle uh talk through those so pretty much repeating what we talked about this morning but um for the sake of those here and watching uh so uh policy 3122 is I'm bringing back to you for an amendment due to uh action at the LA last uh State

047legislative session so um the original policy was created in response to a legislation that required school districts to uh create a policy to uh go through a process of accepting non-resident students if uh seats were available so last year um was the first year for that process and we published 86 seats um about half of those were at Blue Valley Southwest the other half were at Aspen Grove Elementary uh um during that process we received 48 applications and then offered up 35 of those seats for enrollment and only 30 of those students actually ended up attending as part of the amendment uh to that statute from the last legislative sess session there's several pieces in this uh document that have needed to be revised um primarily um key dates and then some um language around

048uh good standing quotee good standing um and also an appeal process uh for that so just some of the key dates first of all um a change would be that uh we start allowing uh enrollment or allowing applications to be presented or uh brought forward in January on January 1st and they would be accepted through June 15th um still on May 1st or by May first we would um bring to you guys a approval of how many seats we would have available or offer up and then beginning June 1st um we would we could begin looking at those applications but don't make decisions on those applications until uh July 15 as part of that process of reviewing applications uh we do get the have the ability uh with the modifications to look at the criteria

049for whether a student is in good standing at their current school um and so there's several criteria those criteria remain unchanged from our previous policy include things like attendance um and also disciplinary records um but not academic performance and then by uh July 30th uh we would need to provi be providing um uh parents with explanation as to whether they their child is going to be accepted or not and then the reason why and then uh the last piece of that is uh if they were not accepted U then they have an ability to appeal that to the board of education so all those different steps would still need to take place prior to the start of the school year any questions about the changes so with this appeal process it goes straight to the

050board or does it go through another level of of appeal vetting like superintendent level or something like that straight to the board okay y oh yeah there you go yeah everything I'm giving you is statute driven and um recreated basically through policy from kasb any other questions for Kyle if not I believe we need to approve this tonight so if I can get a motion for approval I move the Board of Education approve uh policy 3122 is presented second by Patrick second by Clay any further discussion if not all in favor raise your right hand or say I motion passes 70 next item on our agenda is the first Macau and Gordon contract wolf Springs Middle yeah I've got the next three good evening this is something that we've been working on for years honestly

052if they over under bid it overbid correct unless there are errors or omissions and okay right so um if there's a lot of depreciation in terms of material cost the contractor reaps the benefit of that they would okay and on the flip side if it were to go the other direction we've locked in our price for the project okay I just wanted to uh confirm is this how is this fall is this in line with other projects in the area that you've seen yeah absolutely yeah we compared this to middle schools at Lee Summit and OA and we're right in the middle frankly so we're feeling really good about the number all right do I have a motion I move that the Board of Education approve the Macau Gordon Construction LLC contract for construction services

0562025 legislative positions so if they will pull those up thank you guys for doing that uh so this evening uh we've been talking about these for the last couple of months are 2025 uh legislative positions um this first page is similar to what we've done in the past with updated numbers gives just some information about Blue Valley can I Advance this um then the second page there has our priority positions uh we again have five priority positions to fund special education uh fully fund special education oppose tax credits and vouchers for private schools um we know that they're going to start working on the school Finance formula because that's up in 2027 so establish fair and Equitable School Finance formula uh establish again enhance student Mental Health Services support recruitment retention and and alternative teacher
