all right I think we're ready to go so I call the meeting to order so first up board advisory committee reports Tanya I will start us off with the diversity equity and inclusion committee met for the first time last Thursday in this room was uh September 7th at that meeting we really covered first of all we did introductions because it was our first meeting of the year we reviewed policy 3500 and the new code of conduct that the board had approved previously because included in there was some specific information around hate speech and so that was timely for that group to look at we also reviewed briefly just the the civility of Civility policy and we're going to come back to that next month we spent the majority of our time looking at some work
that the diversity team had done the diversity team put some Community connections together Community connections would be information that we would share through school newsletters each month regarding different topics related to diversity issues and then we also spent some time reviewing from our Communications team a social media posts that they put out and had a great conversation about what we should and maybe shouldn't recognize on social media as we put this information out the next meeting is in October and it was a great first meeting other Communications committee met as well so I think Christina erlin's going to give that update the communications board advisory committee met on Tuesday September 25th one of our object objectives is to learn about and provide feedback on the district's communication plan so the committee took a look at
what the district Community Communications plan looked like which includes building a compelling storytelling campaign for the 2324 school year focused on academic success building trust and support from the after 55 demographic communicate and instill a strong sense of priority and awareness regarding school safety among students staff and families with the district and collaborate with human resource resources team to leverage the academic success storytelling campaign for retention and recruitment strategies those are going to be areas of focus not that there aren't a lot of other things that work that's going on behind the scenes committee members participated by providing feedback in each of those areas on what they needed to hear see Know believe in order to understand the work in those areas so their feedback was very very helpful we also shared with the with
the members Our Community Connection Point dates different from that Community Connection the dates were patrons have the opportunity to visit in a little inform and more informal setting those dates are October 5th at Lakewood December 7th at Aubrey Bend middle February 29th at Blue Valley West and April 25th at Blue Valley Middle and those dates will be publicized for others so that we can get the word out about attending those meeting concluded at 8 30 a.m and the next meeting is scheduled for November 7th at 7 30 at district office thank you and finally the finance committee meeting Kyle hey who's going to give that report good evening the finance and operations board advisory committee met on December or September 7th at 7 30 a.m in this room after welcoming the committee members and reviewing
the agenda I highlighted the district annual report Jake slobodnick executive director of operations gave a design and construction update highlighting the major projects occurring this past summer you'll hear more about that from Jake here in a few minutes Jason Gillum Director of Business operations presented the biz and contracts on the consented agenda for board consideration tonight the next meeting is scheduled for October 5th great thank you so we'll move to board members Tom do you have anything to add yeah real quick um obviously it's been a challenging last year plus on the bus side but I loved reading in our report we get as board members about I think the quote was much better with room for improvement which I'll take is a huge win meaning things have gotten much better this year and I
know there's still challenges but just appreciate everybody's leadership including Jason Jake and Kyle for sure on that uh blueberry Foundation breakfast a few weeks ago was a great celebration big crowd all-time record I believe fundraising 400 000 out of that breakfast so congrats to Susan Cindy Lisa and Courtney on that great morning um I think I also read 4 300 middle school and high school students are participating in athletics and activities this fall which is a huge number and I love reading that and then caps Network which Jody and I have the pleasure of being on the Caps Network board which is again as a 501c3 they did that alumni impact report that showcases popularity and positive impact on students gaining a meaningful career so a great study on how much our caps program influences
students and sets them up for future success the Caps Network received a 230 thousand dollar Grant from American Student Assistance in Boston support the overall caps Network and then I believe the summer huddles back here in Overland Park June 24th through 26th for caps a lot of good things going on there with the network that's all we got thank you thanks Tom Patrick thank you Judy um real quick obviously uh the breakfast was a bit was a big event and very important to the district and thank everybody for participating in that and coming out and showing their support for education and the Blue Valley School District rally in the valley was a good send-off start of the school year for staff and administration to kind of get back in the swing of things and I
think that's started off really well I know all the schools are are in full swing and everything's working well and I know we're going to have a couple more updates I think on Chinese immersion here a little bit I know I've heard some very positive things from the group over his whole but I'll go into that in more detail a little bit later and um you know it's it's uh there's a lot of great things going on it takes a lot of people a lot of great staff a lot of great teachers and great parents to make this District function so well and for the kids to be able to achieve the things they do and you know we're headed in the right direction thank you thanks Patrick Sonja yes I like to Echo uh
the comment regarding the breakfast annual breakfast each year I wonder how are they going to top themselves I mean it's outstanding and it's really enjoyable especially to see the administrators participate in the program I was blown away by one of the assistant principals that's saying hero and it was just I mean I got goosebumps and Jordy and I talked about the Goosebumps and it was just awesome and also I like to mention that on August the 26th on a Saturday our superintendent participated in a panel of superintendents it was the call of the Suburban and education Summit and it encompassed all the superintendents in the connecting areas different suburbs Shawnee Mission Lee's Summit Lawrence and a few others and our print our superintendent was awesome I mean I was proud you know that I was
part of the the district and they just got together and they shared ideas as far as how they could Implement and improve uh Equity within their districts and it was just really an awesome program because you I mean you you were fed different ideas thinking outside the box as far as recruiting my minority teachers and things like that and I I just thought that it was an awesome my first experience and I mean I was blown away and also I think that the the Dei committee was awesome as well I went to my first meeting and it was very productive and I was really surprised because the committee actually focused on actual deliverables I mean it was just not a platform just event and um and those items focused on the district's goal in promoting
all students and I just thought that was great fantastic thanks son thing all right Jan thank you um went to Blue Valley Rec committee Communications committee finance committee I know I missed a few other committees but um one of the other highlights since the last meeting was governor Kelly came to Blue Valley Indian Valley Elementary for a ceremonial signing of full funding of Education in the state of Kansas and I I thought it was a great honor that she came to Blue Valley to sign that that was a big deal we talked about the breakfast and raising four hundred thousand dollars but what really struck me at that breakfast was looking around and seeing the corporate investment in education in Johnson County and and that to me tells the economic impact that our school district
has and how much it is valued whether they have kids in a school or not but the investment by the business Community into Blue Valley education is something that's most communities don't have anything near what we have and it's because of the quality of our school district the teachers at 3 500 employees um today I had a Kansas Association of school boards legislative listening lunch Jody and I were at and Gina you were there too right and it was good we had a few uh legislators from the Blue Valley District who were there and listening going over the legislative priorities we might have for the coming session and most importantly I took in a blue valley Northwest soccer game because there was they've got a great midfielder there well that's my grandson so anyway that's
what I had thanks Dan Jim well I wanted just wanted to say something personal but it relates to Blue Valley so I have the opportunity to have my one of my sons got married last weekend and but the the Highlight the connection to Blue Valley is he was a blue valley Southwest grad and the whole row of the church pew at the church was his buddies from Blue Valley and they're one of their teachers their wrestling coach and that's a tight-knit group and it speaks a lot to um you know every kid's got a different experience but usually there's at least one uh person that is kind of a glue for that kid or a group of kids and I think we all have it from our own childhood and then you know because you
Roy back to your childhood uh when you get to be old or older and uh and those are great memories and it was cool to see all those guys come together um and rally around him and for them to be there for my son it was really cool so we have awesome Educators around the district that you know just they got special gifts to connect with people so I I appreciate it and it's why it's why I ran for school boards fly bike serving on it on the board thank you Jim appreciate it Gina so I'm just going to reiterate busing um I know Tom took the words right out of my mouth it's gone really well so far knock on wood um much better than other areas around the country and even in Johnson
County so really appreciative of um thank you Durham but Jason Jason yes really appreciate for all of Jason's work on that um and of course for all of Durham's work they've put into it as well to retain um and recruit drivers Blue Valley Ed Foundation I just want to note yeah it was a great breakfast we have a women's leadership Circle event coming up also in October and those are a lot of fun so I hope you women out there come attend we've got these great grants to Educators and it's a fantastic event great looks like I'm last um so uh just uh to piggyback a little bit on the um what the Ed Foundation does for us and and we did have the breakfast which was a great event and to Jan's Point um
we have an incredible community support our business Community knows um how important the districts all of our districts are here in Johnson County and really come out and and support um us and that's much appreciated because it is a partnership between you know business parents um all Community um one of the things that they they really focused on this time and honoring was the work we've done in the mental health Arena and how incredibly important that is and you know I think many of us know if you can't provide a safe environment in a nurturing environment it's really difficult to learn and so um that's I think something really important to point out too so I appreciate the work that they've done work that our staff has done work that our parents and community they
have done regarding the mental health areas so all right so let's see it looks like oh sorry sorry almost thanks um so a couple things the last time we met uh was the I think a couple days before school started and so I think it's important to note that um we really have had operationally a fantastic start to this school year but I need to highlight something before I go into all these successes I'm not pushing anything guys so I don't know what's going on over there um at the end of the first week Lakewood Middle School had a tragic situation happen they had a beloved teacher who died suddenly from a tragic accident in the Lakewood Middle Community continues to reach out and support each other but I just think it's really important that
we note that and that we we note that although we indicate you know things are going well within the school district and we have had a lot of successes we don't want to forget about the Lakewood community and we will continue to support them so thanks to Dr Schmidt and the crisis team thanks to Dr Stolper and Mr Owings the administrators at Lakewood Middle for continuing to support that Community both at Lakewood and then at Blue Valley West because that teacher had an effect a huge effect on the students at Blue Valley West as well but to highlight what's gone on in the first month of school first of all this first slide actually represents two students who graduated and they were a part of the annual competition KC Superstar and a blue valley Southwest
grad Emma Kate took second place and Blue Valley North grad Brett o'blotnik took first place so that's pretty exciting for both of those as well as a great Testament to their teacher so congratulations to them we also have a current Blue Valley Senior nor and you may remember this name because Nora was here before us remember she's the one who won the huge scholarship and she is the national student Leadership Council officer of the sad committee a sad group so that's a big deal it's a national office it's not just something local here within our district we also Jody mentioned Mental Health First Aid last week we had a professional learning day and we had 17 in-house trainers Who provided Mental Health First Aid training to approximately 160 staff members who went through that training
Mental Health First Aid I equate it to something like CPR training it's not teaching anybody to be a therapist by any means it is just giving them some tools additional tools to assist students so we appreciate all of the trainers as well as all of the people who went through that training um Blue Valley High Schools earned uh top honors they were in the top eight percent according to the U.S news and World Report best high school list and you can see on there that's based on college readiness graduation rate State assessment performance our key metrics in that ranking so congratulations to our five high schools Blue Valley somebody mentioned this I think Helen might have mention this we're number five best employer in the state of Kansas according to Forbes and we don't take
that lightly we know how important that we can do the work we do every day without our employees and then of course the the Ed Foundation breakfast was amazing and there's just a few highlights up there there's a Miss Anderson who sang I agree with you she's amazing her voice is like an angel the special education para to teacher pipeline that was announced as well as our student performances incredible and then it was grandparents day yesterday and so we want to appreciate and support and recognize all those grandparents who support our students every single day so Jan shout out to you we have grandparents who volunteer in our schools we have grandparents who spend time just supporting students at lunch and those type of things so congratulations and then it's arts in education week right
now the 10th through the 16th and so we know how important the Arts are within our schools and so we highlighted a band teacher here we usually have student artwork we'll start getting that up and so we want to acknowledge that and that is it again a good first month and we look forward to continued successes thank you Dr marrigan so we're going to move on to the agenda do I have a motion to approve the September 11 2023 regular Board of Education meeting agenda as published pardon okay I had asked as amended perfect okay um so we need to Pivot on that would remind me what the amendment is okay okay I moved the Board of Education approved the September 11 2023 regular Board of Education meeting agenda as amended second motion by Tom
second by Jan any discussion no discussion all those in favor raise your right hand any opposed same sign motion passes 6-0 so we're going to move on to do I have a motion to approve the September 11th 2023 consent agenda as published I I move that the Board of Education approved the consent agenda for the meeting September 11th 2023. wait a second motion by Jim second by Gina any discussion what do we I'm sorry that was that the correct motion yeah I just reread it a lot differently than what we have right here I just want to make sure we're good I think close enough okay okay yeah keeping it buttoned up did did we cover everything yeah okay all right so let's see where we discussion that was discussion great um all those in
favor raise your right hand any opposed same sign motion passes six zero all right so we're on to new business all right that's all right the building needs assessment and state assessments review was I think is there any discussion for murders that or do you want to do the motion so next we're going to handle the 2023-24 legal maximum budget and estimated tax rate under new business do we have to have the motion before we do that okay the building needs assessment and state assessments review was provided to and evaluated by the USD 229 Board of Education in determining the authority of the local option budget cost of living extraordinary growth special liability and capital outlay Mill levies do I have a motion to approve the 2023-2024 legal maximum budget and estimated tax rate I
move that the Board of Education proved the 2023-24 legal maximum budget and estimated tax rate including an approval of a 33 percent local option budget resolution second we have a motion by Tom second by Jan any discussion foreign I've spent a lot of time thinking reviewing this budget this proposed budget I can understand the rationale behind it what I what I'm having difficulty with is having a effective eight to eight plus percent tax increase on the Blue Valley taxpayer which is accomplished through mostly we did drop the mill Levy from last year to this year by one mill Levy but because of the significant increase in valuations on most homeowners and then by you know indirectly on all renters um it ends up driving up most people's tax bill eight plus percent and which we've
then reverberates into one's rental right there's a massive push upwards in rental rates that's caused by the market and now by increased tax rates I just don't um I can't get behind such a material increase in the tax rate on our local citizens in one year so I I'd like to see us drop that Mill Levy further I have some ideas on it but if you know if it would do other board members would have to support that concept for us to kind of delve into it but so your solution gym would be drop the mill Levy and then thoughts on how to make up for that loss of money or is this are you are you hinting that this is a county issue quote unquote as well as we talked about earlier I mean
we only could drop the mill Levy so much and we have over the past you know wait I mentioned five six years but you know my my thoughts going into this I talked to a few people about this was at the Capitol at the capital outlay fund which the capital outlay fund is a little bit of a misnomer only because it's not only allocated for Capital expenditures I mean I think it historically was but it does a lot we are allowed to use it under state statute for some operating you know salaries and other operating expenses um but but you know a year ago we had 12 plus million dollar Surplus in that in that in that fund we use that to build or to approve the construction of artificial turfs on all of our
softball and baseball fields I get that was approved by the board it's not something that I voted to approve but um the they're you know typically in an organization when you want to tighten your belt particularly one like blue valley that is driven most of our cash that goes out the door is for salaries it's for people I strongly support the increase of uh salaries across the board for our teachers it's how you remain government organizations are usually really slow to raise salaries in an inflationary environment and we've done it and we did a great job at it so I get it but I I um I would suggest that dropping the capital Mill Levy a few percentage points is not going to materially for one year is not going to materially impact our overall
state of our finances a lot of what we do in this budget is we set a a legal maximum rate which we don't we don't historically hit in terms of our actual expenditures the budget that we set um because it's a pain in the neck to come back if you need to go above what your maximum rates have been established in mid-year you know you you aim high well I get Aiming High meaning raising more more money or setting a budget at a level higher than what you may actually plan to to expend but in a year where um everybody's facing such a significant tax increase for doing nothing other than living in their homes is not in my view prudent and we have in in our power to Reign that in for a year
and if if our reserves are cut short or if we feel impacted next year we can we can raise it back up so that's my perspective most of what we do in this district from a capital expenditure outlays we actually spend through our bond and this this community is consistently approved bond to do technology safety build new buildings put new roofs on HVAC you know there's there's a hundred out of 300 districts in Kansas that don't have that kind of community support so we do and so I would just suggest that's where we could could drop it for a year so if I'm correct here are Mill the Mills that come from Capitol at like what seven or eight probably eight mils eight mils yeah it caps it by State law it capsidate okay so
of that eight Mills whatever that generates so 40 percent of that is for salary and teacher compensation correct it's not teacher competition it's uh custodial custodians maintenance grounds people people who work in that area and that's 40 40 other percentages HVAC Roofing parking lots day-to-day operations of this District correct okay and then the rest would be various items we did the baseball fields we did the softball fields is at the discretion of the administration and the board correct right that was a long-term plan the board before this board actually had had kind of put into place uh when we went out to the 2020 Bond actually I think we started talking about it then and then as a part of the 2023 Bond okay and then last it enables us to keep our high ratings
correct with s p and Moody's we need to have a certain amount of cash in the bank correct correct we've seen able to borrow money at an incredibly low rate of whatever it was three and a quarter 2.85 you know 10 bidders Life's good at Blue Valley and saves millions of dollars because we have got cash balance enables us to do that right we've seen some area school districts where their ratings have been lowered because of their cash balances specifically yeah I just want to make sure I just people understand it's more than just hey let's lower the middle the cause and effect on items like that and just having day-to-day for boilers going out or air conditioning or those type of things plus tie into what we've mentioned about the salaries and benefits for
those folks is is really important and that that's a big factor in in the capital Ally section I agree with you Tom that um that if you if you starve that fund for years on end you you create problems for yourself dropping at two or three Mills and for one year is not going to it's not going to impact our it may impact some of the behavior of the decision making at the administrative level because there can be a concern that that out years you know it's going to continue it's not it's not what I I would say that would I'll be on the board a year from now and that wouldn't be my perspective my perspective is you can tighten up your Capital spending in a year where you're asking your taxpayers to take
the brunt of property valuation increases in a in in a kind of a crazy economic time build Goodwill and we still have significant reserves in this district and that fund and other funds so that's that's my viewpoint each meal is about four million dollars okay any other comments just real quick make sure I understand this Jeremy so so the general operating fund is at 20 mils and that's set right by State Statute and that's been set at 20 meals for the last three years right for a long time for a long time so the general supplemental general or the LOB uh in 2122 is at 12.902 -23 is at 11.998 and now it's being proposed is 12.223 okay and then the capital outlay is eight percent and it's been at eight percent the last three
years at least right and then the cost of living was 1.856 in 2122 it was 1.625 and 22.23 and now it's being proposed as 2.477 right and then the special liability expense fund and 21 was 0.351 and 22 it was 0.297 and now it's being proposed is 0.92 on the extraordinary growth facilities it was a 0.57 and 21 .15 and 22 and now 0.972 and 23. the bond and interest on number one was 15.154 and 21. it was 12.6 and 22 and now it's being proposed at 10. okay and the next item was special assessment in 21 it was point one two one three two 22 was 0.200 and in 23 it's .095 right car have I missed any okay thank you all right any further discussion okay do we have a motion oh that's
right do we have a vote yeah yep okay all those let's see I don't have to call it okay okay all those in favor raise your right hand okay any opposed same sign motion passes six one all right so now we're on to design and construction updates Jake slobotnik is going to give an update of some of the amazing work that we have been doing in our design and construction Department good evening and what a time to be in Blue Valley I bring you tons of great news today we've been busy over the last three years especially this summer and tonight we're going to talk about all the great things we've done recently in design and construction in the world of Blue Valley we'll start with a project that's really three projects at our Blue
Valley Academy and the first portion of that project is a renovation to the building on the interior it's the library media center renovation and you can see photos of that here I'll talk a little bit about some of the feedback we've gotten I did something a little different this year in just a couple slides another area that we renovated within that building is our gear program and this is a program for some of our special ed students and again an incredible space we also combined all of those special ed programs into one area so they weren't trying to extend resources throughout the entire building and of all the spaces that we've done this might have a small footprint but it has a huge impact a third project at this site is a construction Tech program
and I'm extremely excited about this number one I think we need more people in the trades but that picture on the left is the trailer that this class these classes worked out of for the last several years in the parking lot of Blue Valley caps now they have a space when we vacated the receiving distribution center and built the logistics Center we didn't have a purpose for that building so we decided let's utilize it let's build a space for their construction Tech program and I spent some time this year after all these projects and I went out and interviewed teachers and students just to say what are we doing are we doing the right things are the spaces what they need to be because that's why we're really here and I've got quotes on every
project I'll go through tonight and a couple of these I'll highlight related to the academy space the design has a significant impact on how students behave you can tell they respect the space and for one of our students they said it feels like someone cares the fact that you built this for us it means a lot to us that's huge I mean that's why I do what I do that's why my team does what they do that's why you all support the bond that's why our community supports the bond that's huge that's the feedback that I want to see and that I've been missing in previous reports in our gear program teachers I'm obsessed with this space these kiddos really deserve this again teachers that are excited about it and what is best for our
kids that's what we need to be doing construction Tech space this space will allow us to do projects we couldn't dream of before because we didn't have a space students saying that's my favorite place to go during the day and one individual she said I've never really taken a construction class but I'm excited to because this space is awesome essentially we also renovated the last two of our elementary schools to create flexible learning environments at Timber Creek and wolf Springs very similar to all the other elementary schools that we've renovated I got to sit down with several teachers over their lunch hour and they said in only a week we've been able to do more collaboration than we ever could before we've used it for math for science for indoor recess the opportunities are endless
and one that really hit me was the environment has reduced the stress on students who don't have a known friend in their class so they're coming into first grade they don't know all their peers but they know that their best friend is in the class next door well they're going to get to open up those doors and collaborate with that friend and that reduces that stress and one of the students said my favorite part of the renovation recess I don't really know if you understood the assignment but I think what he was talking about was indoor recess because it was that week where it was really hot they've had a lot and that's what I was right there when they were coloring I was I was there during that we also renovated all of our
Middle School seat or our fax rooms this is a fantastic project it's really hard to appreciate what this is unless you knew what they were before we came in we modernized we made them semi-commercial at least looking but all the while being able to teach those early introductory food and nutrition science type classes teachers saying this is a space I want to spend time in and students saying feels like a commercial kitchen and I love that and I love that we have air fryers now and why that's important because it's not just construction when we do these projects we talk Furniture we talk equipment we talk technology it's about getting the entire package of these projects right and I think we've done that here you've seen this before this is our schedule for the entire
0432020 bond that gray has moved slowly every year and I'm happy to stand here tonight and say we are done with all major projects from the 2020 bond in just under four years so huge accomplishment a lot of folks behind the scenes made this happen several individuals in my department and various other departments across the district but a huge success related to the 2020 Bond so when one finishes we're not done we've got some other capital outlay projects the big one this year we talked a little bit about this earlier this evening the baseball and softball turf fields at all of our high schools those are ongoing we've broken ground to every site except for Blue Valley High and that's coming up this is to replace the natural grass with artificial turf but also include
new fencing safety nets batting cages and in some cases dugouts new bullpens this is a great project and frankly this is a project that I think's been long overdue so this is uh we're excited about this one and I said we're not slowing down so in January our community supported our 2023 Bond and we've spent the last several months interviewing going out through RFP RFQ for all of our Architects and construction managers we do have those all hired now you've approved those package a our middle school project is DLR is the architect and Macau and Gordon is the construction manager package B is our early childhood expansion mobile removals Blue Valley North Performing Arts CTE improvements and that architect is PG AV construction manager macauan Gordon Package C our multi-purpose editions at middle schools Ox
gyms at west and southwest athletic improvements at Blue Valley North Blue Valley High and Northwest that'll be designed by hollison Miller and built by Straub construction so we are thankful to everybody who submitted to do the work on these projects and we believe we have the best teams for these projects we're kicking off a lot right now so we just started sitting down with all of our principals at buildings we're going to start kicking off our middle school 11 programming sessions we've sat down with Blue Valley North and Blue Valley West we're going to be kicking off the Leewood Elementary and Overland Trail Elementary mobile removal projects Hilltop Early Childhood expansion we've met regarding that and again we have lots of district-wide HVAC upgrades building envelope improvements Paving so we're not slowing down we got
to take it when we can get it in our community once again said we've got work to do and it's our job to get it done we already started construction on the Aubrey Ben multi-purpose space that is the storm sewer going in as of about a week and a half ago so with that I would say thank you to you all for your support thanks to our community for their support if there are any questions related to the bond that website will take you to all the information that you could ever want with that happy to answer any questions what's that when are you going to be done in if everything goes right we would like to be done within three years so 2026. great question thank you yeah and I would like to extend
to the board uh if you want a tour of Blue Valley Academy special education area over here just let me know and we will make that happen it's really pretty phenomenal space it really is thanks Jake thank you all right so next is a status update on Chinese the Chinese immersion task force you bet so gosh last was it March or April I don't remember now but last of March or April um we brought to you a Chinese immersion proposal and at the end of that meeting we identified that we were going to to put a group together to look at that so we have a group a wide range of people parents some Educators some people from our Teachers Association some administrators a few district office staff who have worked Gina and Jim are
a part of that group who have worked we gave homework over the summer and so they spent some time putting some proposals together they came back last month just a couple weeks ago and we started evaluating those proposals and the committee really worked well together looking at evaluating those different options and and looking at what what this future of an immersion program might look like we have more work to do and we meet again and next week I think where we'll continue to refine those proposals our goal is to bring the board some options in November to consider and so we will we're on track to get that done I want to thank publicly thank Kelly Ott and Jennifer luzinski for all the work they've done to coordinate this group but everybody's really working hard
on this I want to thank the members of this group for their work on this and just wanted you to know that we're continuing to to make progress and we still hope to bring you something in November yeah thank you Dr Marion um I know that I've received a lot of information over the last several months I know you guys met in August and I think it was a really productive valuable meeting I know Gina and Jim were there I know the community has has come together and I rolling up their sleeves and they understand some of the challenges you know I know Tom and I were on this board when the immersion program was approved and that was brought by me uh to this uh to the school district and I think it's a
it's a great program obviously our challenges um are something that you have to continue to look at and evaluate over time as things change and things have changed but I but I want to commend the work of the committee for understanding what those challenges are and looking for ways to embody or continue in in some fashion we don't know what that is yet the child the immersion language program I think it's positive for the district and you know that's that's a model that we can rely on in the future and I want to commend the parents on the task force and the parents and the Chinese immersion programs for their diligence and patience and appreciate their willingness to work through some of these challenges with us and so I think we're on the right track
I know the the board is interested in in seeing what the final recommendation is but I know that it's a valued program in the district and I think there are hopefully opportunities to continue and or expand into the other feeder systems and I know those are those are big those are big issues and we may not be able to solve them today but so hopefully in the future there's there's opportunities questions thank you Dr American so next we're on to policy 6610 the board brings or the board Administration brings before you tonight policy 6610 for actual consideration for approval when we had our negotiated agreement pass part of that negotiated agreement included some leave language and we would mirror that leave language with our classified and administrative employees and that's what policy third that's what
policy 6610 does is it incorporates that language into there so we we would respectfully ask for consideration of this policy and just so I can um we did review this we this isn't the first time we've heard this we've reviewed it other times but again this morning also so I moved the Board of Education approved policy 6610 as proposed second motion by Tom second by Jan any discussion seeing none all in favor raise your right hand any opposed same sign motion passes 7-0 all right so next we have policy 6100 yeah policy 6100 actually just is a really minor change um this is the Equal Employment Opportunity policy and it actually references a board policy that was wrong in here so we want to just to correct that so we would respectfully ask for approval
