but then when you guys like play along with Megan do you have 6 30. I do okay uh good evening we will call this meeting to order for USD 348 Board of Education uh may I have an approval of the agenda second Phyllis moved and Susan has seconded to approve the agenda as presented all those in favor please say aye raise your right hand eye motion carries 6-0 this time I ask you to or invite you to say the Pledge of Allegiance thank you I pledge allegiance to take the fire of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty justice for all right welcome everybody um for organizational items we actually have those in two different letters tonight because we have so many
of them this is our annual organizational meeting that happens in January where we have to take care of a lot of housekeeping um among the board but before we do that are there any uh parent family and Community engagement opportunities that any of our administrators would like to share about coming up it's okay if not or any other announcements Mr Bland you have something awesome on Friday this week at 10 A.M we will be having our building spelling bee uh in the PAC and so any parent that would like to come in and join us for that is welcome to join us so 10 a.m on Friday this week I also wanted to uh just uh publicly announce that posted on Facebook earlier uh we will have Mark Potter joining us in about a week
he's got a great message on shattering the stigma it is bringing awareness to and in our efforts to normalize uh seeking seeking support for uh depression or mental health we're working to you know to basically get back the message out there it's okay to not be okay it's okay to ask forever it's okay to get help um so we've got a community presentation on Sunday evening at six o'clock at the pack and then the following Monday there will be a junior high presentation 15 in the high school at 9 45. awesome um a couple of other announcements we wanted to Circle back to um and Mr Dodge if you could talk about this a little bit too um ever since it's been many years that our schools have been so generous to our local food
pantries um but this year there was additional creativity I thought that was displayed among the primary Center and the intermediate Center and would you like to talk about that in the Bounty that it reaped so there was a grade level competition generating food donations for the local food pantry and I received an email from Nancy Arnold right before we went off to break and it reads here once again we want to express our thanks to the elementary schools for hosting a food drive the Baldwin Community Food Pantry received over 2 000 items from the intermediate Center on Monday and then thank you also to Lindsey Perry and her crew for delivering it to the pantry and they'll be able to serve neighbors with this bounty and it was a great opportunity that was just from
the IC and I know the primary Center there was a huge stack of items when I was over there and so that's just a testament to not just our families but just the Baldwin Community it's just a great way to give back and take care of our own and I did hear an announcement later on that there was so much that was donated that they have they're looking for a place to store the additional while what they put on the shelves gets access in your life so that's just a huge thing thank you to our schools for taking part in that thank you for our families for making it happen awesome when you're looking for extra storage that's a good problem to have fantastic um one thing I wanted to make sure and circle back
to we had a joint session this last Thursday with the Baldwin City Council among the board um part of that joint session was to talk about both of our strategic plans we've been in a similar place as far as the timing of that and for us to have the opportunity to get together as Community leaders and talk about what areas of the Strategic plan might there be overlap as part of that meeting what we also wanted to do was to pause and thank all of those past Community Servants of both those past members of city council and also of and past members who've served on the school board because it it's a it's a privilege to be able to think ahead and and to be involved in forward visioning um but we stand on the
shoulders of those who've come before and those who've served so we made every effort to recognize all those passive board members but there was no mission that I I wanted to correct and I apologize we listed every school board member that we could find a record on in minutes since the early 60s and we accidentally I accidentally omitted Harry Stevens's name so I wanted to apologize about that and also Circle back to thank her for her service and her time on the board as well it hasn't come to my attention that we missed anybody else but I did want to uh I did want to apologize about that and thank Gary for her service um any other announcements from anybody else yes a little bit deviate a little bit here right I'm surprised so January
is of each year is School Board appreciation month this is a time to recognize those individuals who give their time talents time and talents to provide leadership and direction for the students of our community there's no monetary reward for the hours upon hours in which they dedicate to the success of each student the reward is intrinsic and it's felt when a graduate crosses the stage in May and Shakes the board members hands it's when a teacher celebrates the academic successes of their students or when a parent is honored by the performance of their child the reward is a handshake they receive from a new staff member when introductions are made or when a returning staff member tells them how proud they are of our school and our community as with all leadership roles in addition
to the Celebration the challenges are felt as well as board members tough decisions are made these are decisions that have a direct impact on the lives and families of our community the connection to our students staff and families who are board members are real and it's personal former U.S Secretary of Education Richard Riley said the following as a product of the public education system I want all American students to have what I have access to a quality education that enables them to pursue any career they wish and take on any challenge they choose giving our students the best education in the world is a moral imperative and especially an economic necessity so on behalf of everyone at Baldwin City USD 348 thank you first At Your Service to our students our staff and our community
and with that we have for you your own certificate thank you Tony Brown Andy Parks Susan Shuffle Vine I feel hard do we have Kelly neutrals back in the field so please join me in thinking well that was a surprise thank you I was very kind um thanks guys okay all right moving on to um scene more organizational items so every year in January we have the job of making sure that we have officer positions slated as well as our various subcommittee responsibilities um and we'll divide and conquer this as we go all down through the list but the first one uh for this January to next January uh involves election of board vice president and board president so we will open up the table for any nominations and then proceed to I'll say Phil
has moved and um Tony has seconded um thank you for the nomination uh and the second uh all those in favor please say aye raise your right hand bye motion carries 6-0 thank you guys um it's an honor to serve uh now moving on to election of our for forward vice president I moved Dr Phil Harvey as board vice president uh Kelly has moved and Chris has seconded to elect uh Dr Phil Harvey as Boe vice president all those in favor please say aye and raise your right hand I know she carries 6-0 foreign whoever's the vice president is the person I'm calling and saying okay here's what we got to figure out so thanks Phil um okay designation of board representatives for Co-Op negotiations uh Baldwin Education Foundation and District site Council um we
can go through this sequentially but also these that kind of make sense for us to talk about holistically too so we have three of you who your terms expire in 24. or excuse me in 26 and four of us expire in 24. so what we want to be thoughtful about in terms of coverage I know we always are but just another thing to think about is for those of you who expire in 26 to make sure that we've that we continue to have coverage for Co-Op and negotiations make sure we've got that spread out I know you're you're already there is anybody interested in making huge changes in the roles that they currently have okay um because Co-op what we have currently we have Chris we have Tony and then your alternate is Susan right
so that we've got that and for negotiations Andy is the lead uh Kelly has said he would be happy to continue in that capacity and Phil is the alternate um so in terms of 20 term expiring in 26 there's still coverage on that um Andy and Kelly both though expire in 24. that sounds sort of morbid to say expired I could grab my chest yeah I'm sorry I didn't help me with a different word but their terms are completed in 24. so that's kind of maybe the one area and Andy you're still willing to serve as lead what are your thoughts yeah I'll address this to Phil mainly I guess um I've spoken to Kelly and we are both willing to continue but I don't know Kelly's intention if he intends not to run there
would be a void of people who have actually done it at the table recently so if you feel like you want to move up to that second position I'm sure I did the second position I think for either two or three years at least you will be on that team to provide some knowledge so I will resist the urge since Kelly had the nerve to not be here to make him the lead and I will accept my position again but Andy was that part of the plan and he would be the lead no I'm just joking okay if you don't show up you might not find yourself nominated for things so I'm willing to be lead on my final all right out that way yeah okay okay um and I do want to note Kelly's
at the basketball game he has a senior I do not so that's where he's at tonight and and rightly so go Bulldogs um In Absentia we should just tell oh we elected you board presidents of an alternate on about anything anymore oh gosh okay so so for Co-Op and negotiations we've got the 26 folks spread out among those and those are the two in terms of just the amount of learning curve on those subcommittee okay great and then um District side Council that's kind of a given but we also wanted to bring it up I mean there's the continuity is good so you're still Yeah Ashley very easy awesome and then um and I can continue with being the bef rep we need a motion for all of that yeah or we can do it
separately but we could probably do it all in one um all in one solution here I will make that work yes I uh I move we maintain the status quo for appointees on Co-op negotiations Education Foundation and District sections all right Andy moved and Phil seconded to keep the designations of board representative as they currently are for the upcoming year all those in favor please say aye raise your right hand all right I motion carries six zero okay thanks everybody um consent agenda now you'll note um one thing that's on here that is typically not the other board appointments resolutions and designations that has to do with um for monthly meeting dates that has to be in resolution form uh the other appointments have to do with who your public information officer is um different
designations of that so I want to make sure everybody has a chance to look at that because that's part of the consent agenda no changes from where where things currently are in terms of signators and all those sorts of things but that's what that entails foreign agenda as presented all those in favor please say aye motion carries 6-0 all right recognition time all right first up we have intermediate Center spelling bee oh hi McKenna would you like to come up here we're going to talk about you for a second Mr Wolfman do you want to come up to I'm McKinley you got taller over the brain so Mr wall Smith can you explain a little bit about your format for the spelling bee and it's the day before winter break too right so it's like
very exciting atmosphere so the first step is they have to they have to go through their classroom spelling these so each teacher does a class spelling you can volunteer it's all voluntary you have to get through that round and then you have to go face the fourth and fifth graders of each class and as our champion she now has to go to Douglas County next month and represent us with third through eighth graders so it ramps up a little bit and so she made it through this is the second time since I've been here we had a third grader be our champion so we're very very proud that is amazing a little harder to accomplish and some of those words we're adults we're back McKenna do you remember what your winning work was by any
chance restoration so and it's hard to spell things in front of people but you were calling cool and Collective weren't you that is so great so when is the next round again you said it's next month it's the 13th of February 11th 11th the 11th of February Lauren Set uh Billy those Junior High okay well that is very exciting now is that something that's open to the public or very cool so we will be sending you uh Happy Vibes on the morning of February 11th for the next round if you're still going to be okay so now I'm going to read you a certificate for your awesomeness and then everybody's gonna clap for you is that cool all right the Baldwin City Board of Education of USC 348 supports and promotes excellence in all school
activities including spelling bees on this day January 17th 2023 the Board of Education recognizes and congratulates McKenna ising as the Baldwin Elementary School Intermediate Center spelling bee Champion congratulations [Applause] thank you all right next up we have several uh band recognitions so the first one we're going to do it's a little bit um it's switched on the agenda but we're actually going to do the kmea District Band recognition first and then we will do the Jazz Band so Mr O'Neill is with us tonight and we were all just bragging about how awesome the band is at the great at the basketball game the other night but they don't just play at games they actually do lots of other stuff I actually have a curriculum you have a curriculum so Mr Neal would you like to
talk about your project sure before I say that I'm I was having a conversation with my family last week my son made one of the finals of the spelling bee when he was in sixth grade and he lost on the word satellite and he's 24 now and still bugs and he's like the girl next to me who won she got kitchen so look at the draw anyway I just thought you should know that so I don't know why so um I am as a music teacher I'm a member of an organization called kmea Kansas music educators Association and it is a pretty organized event it it encompasses teachers pre-k through the Collegiate level and we've self-organized into seven districts throughout the state and so every fall students in choir in Orchestra and band audition for
a spot in the district level band and we had 11 Baldwin students audition and we had 11 Ballroom students be accepted so Bravo over here [Applause] yes I will read your names and if you are here come on up if you are not here don't come up but for the first one we have Kate Welch who's a senior here this year congratulations Kate yes uh Maddie Hargett Carson Blevins Cooper Wills Ethan Enright foreign congratulations Dan Welch congratulations Cersei Hopkinson Eric letter Luke Hayes Ally Kramer Lily Breedlove so we're going to give them a round of applause on this day January 17th 2023 the Board of Education recognizes and congratulates all of our kmea district band participants okay if we do one more thing please do so after students make the District Band cut they've been
from those seven districts they are then eligible to audition for The All State Bank which hasn't happened yet that the auditions have happened that event will take place in late February under our very own Kate Welch is currently a member of the all statement are alternates and while we would never wish ill of the people who were in line you never know so so anyway we shall see what happens at the end of February so the end of February is a huge Statewide convention in Wichita and all music teachers get together and three things happen one of which is these honor um honor band that she's going to be in Rachel has a couple of kids in the Honor Choir he's different auditions groups made up of kids from around the state they come together
they rehearse for the weekend they perform that's one aspect of it another aspect of it is in-service opportunities for teachers the third aspect of it is um a particular School Ensemble can submit an audition tape for the prior spring and the majority of those get rejected and a few certain lucky ones that are that are deemed good enough they are accepted and they get to perform at this event and our Baldwin High School Jazz Ensemble was one of those we're one of six High School band jazz bands across the entire State um to um who have been invited and accepted to perform at the state so it's kind of a big deal we perform it Saturday morning at eight o'clock great time for jazzers but it will still be awake I don't know what are
you performing what are you performing we don't know yet we have a half hour set we're getting close Okay so we have a half hour set and it'll be kind of a greatest hits of what we've been doing all year plus some new stuff thanks so if you are part of uh jazz band I want all of you to come up here so I can recognize you all at once okay so all the Jazz Ensemble go ahead and come on up so yeah Micah and yep Ethan and Kate is a part-time member she sings with us and she plays some Shaker yes please Shaker is important singing is mad but she crushes um so I want to make sure I'm going to say everybody's names but then I'll present you with your certificate so you
can take home but members of the Baldwin High School Jazz Ensemble include love Carson Blevins Laura Breedlove George Conover Ali Kramer deep thinning right congratulations again is that a good one blue case Dylan Jones Levi Lantus Eric letterer Kade long Michael Morris okay some two and I'm gonna get this right uh onion of good bow no does that say a fast and commit to it okay Dylan Patterson Michael Reynolds congratulations Marcus Cooper Wills and Dan Welch all right so now I'm going to read the thing oh excuse me anacio Sodom the Baldwin City Board of Education of USD 348 supports improvements uh excellence in all school activities on this January 17th 2023 the Board of Education recognizes and congratulates each of you for Jazz Ensemble accomplishments well done one of our concerts if you don't
have kiddos in the program anymore that's very understandable but come come check it out there's some little things happening um the lumber yard art center invited us to do a couple pre uh kmaa and performances to kind of get the Jitters out a little bit um and I have the dates for those I'm happy to email those to you I think they are charging for those I don't know all the details yet but I'll know in a month so anyway I'll share that if you can come check it out it'll be terrific so thanks so much for having us tonight congratulations thank you thank you and I think is it okay if they sneak out of here and go home and practice thank you all right um Board of member recognition as we already did
that so um I would I would like to thank each of you though um and I I don't want to just thank you guys I absolutely like to give a special thanks um to your spouses and to your family members it it really that's the thank you I want to say we spend a lot of time together um and we're happy to do that but it also is an active service in sacrifice on the parts of your family members as well so I want to say an extra special thank you for that okay all right um educational program highlights okay has that tonight for us so technology does have the educational Spotlight tonight and I invited Drew Isaac to come and talk about makerspaces maker spaces are a lot more than technology but as a
technology department we've been trying to support him as much as we can without targeted funds so you'll probably those of you've been on the board know that for quite a while we've had makerspaces on the capital outlay plant and they got bumped a few years ago for the secure entry spaces which were identified as a need to make three of the buildings more secure so entrances are added access control as I added that was a little technology too um and and while that was a very necessary thing it did bump uh the Big Time picture of makerspaces uh back a bit uh but there is still some things going on um and I did that I wanted you to be aware uh like I said I have targeted you know a few funds as I
can right now I'm looking at a laser cutter for this year it'll probably be what goes into that space But Drew wherever he is behind me I'll let him take over hello uh and because it's School Board member appreciation month we we should be there so there's that for you um can ask director you just say what wouldn't it be nice if we had coasters for the board members board member appreciation and they do nest if I were to give you more than one but I didn't um it's there for you um yeah so thanks for having me here um there are good and bad things to uh having this get kicked down the road a little bit um when I first started in this position that was like my big task that Rob McKim
gave me approximately two weeks before he took a job in another place um he was like you know I want you to start to think about how you can um create kind of a maker space of sorts in our library um and so then we started one in the primary Center Library out of just kind of found things and donations and some of it could be considered junk but we chose not to think of it that way um and and so that was something but space was always going to be the question right um we chose to go in the Direction with Chromebooks at the junior high school and at the high school the iPads have gotten to the point that you know they're all with these embedded keyboard cases and they're basically just baby
laptops at this point and so the need for computer labs has diminished over time uh and that has actually freed up some space for us to try some cool new stuff um we last year took some students down to a place um Gould Evans an Architecture Firm in Kansas City Missouri and they have what they call their steam studio and so it's just kind of a place where classes can come in Architects can come work um and it's just a flexible space you know the only thing it was a maker space it's kind of a flexible Innovative classroom space uh and so what we have been able to do is kind of create one of our own um flexible spaces out of a computer lab that was at the junior high school um Mr Bland
was kind enough to allow me um and at the time Dr hair and now um Kay and and um Ashley and I kind of create this space that can become a place that anybody in the district can almost like take an in-district field trip to we've got four 3D printers in there right now uh sometime this semester we'll have an augmented reality sandbox um that has a kind of a camera on top and so as you move um stuff around under the the screen IT projects different things onto it and so you're able to like build watersheds and think about how you might sight houses and how would a flood or how would wind conditions affect certain things based on kind of how you build it in the sand uh it's kind of a cool
thing to do that came from a bef grant that uh Jim Ashcraft and I wrote a while ago um and so the goal with the space is to create a space that could be used for anything project-based learning school groups we could use it for professional development we can use it for making stuff making cool things uh the goal has always been to do what we can with what we've got and so we've repurposed the plastic screens that used to keep us from coughing on each other and the offices and they were going to get rid of those and so we've kind of made those as table top kind of white boards that you can write on that stand up or lay down um eventually the goal is to paint it bright exciting colors and
not the institutional white that tends to be on a lot of our walls in the classrooms again an easy thing to do with very little money I would love to repurpose some of the tables by making them uh move around more easily so either with slides or wheels on the bottom so that we can make a space that our students can use to whatever they need it to be right now it's got itself set up with tables in different groups it's got some things around the outside of the edge of the table where they can plug Chromebooks or iPads into external monitors and get a bigger screen to work around and all this was done for uh essentially zero dollars so while I am disappointed obviously that the the budgeted funds for the Makerspace have
kind of taken a back burner now a few times since I've started this position um I wanted you to know that the the purpose of a Makerspace is not to have all of the money in the world right it's to make stuff uh and so that's what we're doing we're making stuff opportunities and we're doing cool stuff for students and hopefully this semester they'll start to use that uh here at the intermediate Center Mr wall Smith um is kind of starting his own space just down the hall here in the old band room some of the students in our Extended Learning Program got a chance to kind of design that space with what they think it should look like it might look like Mr wall Smith is going to get some carts that teachers can
either use in the space with different materials and supplies for projects as they need them or they can um you know fill the bends with the stuff they need for the projects in their classrooms they can wheel it down to the Pod or into their classroom itself and so it's kind of a maker space on Wheels um that they can use that room as they need to or they can um take it to their classroom depending on what the teacher wants and needs um and so that's uh that's kind of where we're at right now uh hopefully you know as as we get towards year end uh if there are some budgeted funds that we we end up having a little bit of extra on I want you to know that I've got some ideas
uh and it's available to you there but um yeah I'd love for you to stop by sometime and just kind of check out the spaces and and see what we can do because there's some pretty cool stuff going on the crew showed me the Middle School location then he's got set up there and if you can see the vision as you go in there here and you see him talk about and the cool party you hear the passion you see the passion as he's bouncing around from the different locations and the the expansion of the room about how it can be used for team building problem solving there's just so much opportunity that lies there so I'm looking forward to continuing this teacher's leadership in that area yeah are there any questions or comments that
you all have uh for the program well I will say that that your presentation was very compelling and it and it almost makes a case for us continuing to underfund European amazing things with no money yeah now that I see you know if you think this is good that's what that's what I should have said uh yeah and uh Mr Dodge thinks differently than me um and obviously uh I am a person who does things for the philosophical enjoyment I think we should do this just because we can do this right um and he sees an ability for us to maybe take some of our students in our entrepreneurship classes and perhaps monetize some of the things that we're able to do like sell sets of coasters and things and um one of our first
grade teachers this year made Christmas or their students designed ornaments for their home and so we could we could do things like I mean we could do things like that um but I don't know it I just like giving stuff away um so that's that's another problem don't tell my wife students who commit a violent act like 70 are current students so the strongest research is to create a community and that sense that students have that place to go and be you know a part of things and that this space you know crazy space that really is conducive yeah and you know we talk about four C's right 21st century competencies you know can we get creativity and critical thinking and communication and collaboration right um and that's one thing that this does to the
nines right every kid can can create a thing that's their vision and they have to work together and I'll tell you what the first time I designed that thing it didn't look very good um I didn't have any eyes or a nose on it and apparently dogs are supposed to have Isis uh and so I got some feedback and we were able to design a much better version of that and I think I got Spike pretty close I think I got him pretty close what you've done with no money is remarkable um and you know budget reflects priority oh yeah and for sure safe entrances are well above 3D printers and lasers um you know that in in terms of future planning we also have to be realistic that if we're going to have programming
you have to fund it that's just the reality it doesn't matter what it is if you want to have a sports program you have to fund it if you want to have this educational program you have to fund it um and I I hope that we've got a big hole to dig out of budgetarily this year as we're aware but in terms of moving forward you know it's important for us to hear about the things that are possible for our students so that we can fund it but I I do want to thank you and also your colleagues from the work that you've done with no funding and making it work because um philosophically that's exactly where you're at we'll we'll figure it out because the kids need to have this so I I we
appreciate the work that's been done in the creativity on one part to make all that happen for them yeah thank you I had great support yes yeah if you wanted to use a technology Spa program and it will continue to do that as I can so thank you team player thank you thanks guys uh celebrating 348 student voices I haven't received any letters so nothing to share there and um oh yes thank you Susan that was not true we received this beautiful card just tonight delivered by Mr Bland from the junior high thank you so much for reminding me it wasn't in my folder so I wasn't thinking about it outside of mine um but the junior high students and staff made this card uh for you guys so make sure have a moment to
take to take a look it's so sweet it's not just names it's like little personal notes along with it it's it's very very kind so thank you for bringing that over thank you for reminding me now that's a lot of voices right there um before we move on to Baldwin building employee of the month I don't have any certificates or anything but this just because of the timing of it we don't do separate uh certificates for um every all lead designation but I did at least want to acknowledge we had a lot of students receive a lot of um recognition in the Lawrence Journal World all area and I did want to make sure we had like three volleyball players I think four soccer players um Coach elisher received coach of the year that's a
big deal for a football program uh Jack Harvey I'm not sure if we're there any I don't know if there were any other football players I just saw Jack but we had a lot of students featured in that um so I just went and when anytime we have a coach that gets coach of the year that's a big deal too so I want to just kind of throw that in as another thing to celebrate and now we're going to move on to our bold and built Employee of the Month Mr Raj Okay so last month librarian to received the employee of the month and tonight we're here to honor and pass the belt on to the Knicks Champion for our students so I'm going to read some of the denominations for the January employee of
the month um and by the way this individual received more nominations than any other nominee we've had to this day um so this this was very challenging going through and pulling out from the many comments here but uh we've got some some good comments to share all right so this this nominee it's obvious that our nominee loves the students at the primary Center and enjoys working with students who need additional support in Reading email as a teacher I know my students are learning gaining and honing their skills when they are with her I am confident that the time they spend with her is valuable they are so amazing group of students and you can tell that they always want to have fun as well as the students having fun they get an A plus for
their flexibility and when seeking a quote to the finest individual says every child deserves a champion an adult who will never give up on them who understands the power of connection and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be that was that was uh stated by Rita Pearson um this individual not only are they are not only representing this commentary but to her co-workers as well they are humble a humble Soul who is a champion for anyone they work with so at this time I'd like to introduce our employee of the month foreign Education Foundation co-sponsors this employee award and so the enclosed cash of 50 is also a nice and nice somewhere for you too so congratulations I have to tell you a funny story about this we're working right now
um on one of a very important life skill of being able to focus when they're with me for the short periods of time in our little classroom and I have visual reminders on everything um from the kleenex boxes to the table tops and kind of okay bring your attention back to me so I don't know if we can't handle having a Kleenex bar in the bathroom no that's great so no thank you so much for this and and a happy happy board members or board member or recognition Mike so thank you so much for this and I just um I just enjoy working in the Baldwin School District so much I'm going to Echo Mr Dodgers sentiments at our state of the district address back in January um you know the day that I wake
up and this is just a job is the day that I'm in the wrong profession and that will never happen um it's a very very personal to me my children go to this school district I have um nieces that attend school district friends family members um I'm just very tied into the District of the community and I just I'm so honored when I'm not in Baldwin and someone asks me what what do you do I love saying and teach and then they say where do you teach and I love saying I teach in Baldwin so thank you so much for this [Applause] foreign moving on to public comments uh public comment is an opportunity for the board to listen in accordance to District policy bcbi this is the agenda time during the meeting when an
individual May address the board or welcomes up to 10 patrons to speak with each Patron having the opportunity to speak for three minutes those wishing to make public comment were asked to sign up on the night of the meeting prior to 7 PM with the exception of not discussing specific matters related to identifying students or staff by name doing the confidentiality considerations there are no restrictions regarding the subject matter the patron wishes to share with the board also if a delegation of persons comes to discuss single issue every effort should be made to avoid redundancy by each person saying only new facts or new perceptions during our allotted time board members are not to respond during this time again this is the time established in the meeting for board members to prioritize listening to the
public and we have one person Ken Snyder who wants to speak about K-5 Ela curriculum enough whichever I want to speak to you tonight about the from I guess that was December's meeting or January's meeting it is January December's meeting about the uh selection of a new K-5 English and language arts curriculum uh preparing for this as kind of thinking about how ironic it was that this is on a Tuesday because yesterday we were remembering the legacy of Dr Martin Luther King during his famous speech I Have a Dream he said I have a dream that one day the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit together down at the table Brotherhood and can also continue to say I have a dream that my four little
children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character it's in this backdrop that I want to bring to your attention the proposed curriculum from Savas which was one of the two options that was presented contrary to Dr King's view of unity among people Savas Embraces the divisive and toxic diversity equity and inclusion also known as a Dei in fact the website boldly States expanding equity and inclusion is woven into everything we do at Savas from the curricula we develop to the training we offer our employees in order to demonstrate their disdain from meritocracy and those who believe in excellence they continue on their website quoting we remain committed to forging relationships with minority-owned businesses women-owned businesses people
with disability owned businesses veteran-owned businesses an lgbtq Plus on businesses as well as many small economically disadvantaged and historically underutilized businesses apparently Savas seems to be more interested in intersectional hierarchy of their suppliers than finding the best supplier what could go wrong with that Dei goes hand in hand with a critical race Theory also known as CRT and what does CRT teach it teaches us contrary to what Dr King said teach us that Band-Aids are racist the word field is racist that's a new one by the way uh master bedroom or master bath is also racist and even whiteboards are racist you'd be laughable if it wasn't such a serious Topic in our culture because let's not forget that crtoflo teaches us that the men and women of law enforcement are of course racist I
hope we all remember the rights of 2020 and the whole defund the police movement it's all tied together CRT teaches people to see the world through the lens of race and power dynamics where victimhood is the ultimate status symbol in resilience hard work and self-discipline are remnants from a bygone error Dei and CRT are interwoven cannot be separated so why would we bring them together into the classroom this office curriculum instead of having our children sit down together at the table of Brotherhood as Dr King divisioned Savas believes it is their mission to teach our kids to view each other based on immutable characteristics instead of the content of their character I believe 120 is better than this thank you right there's nobody else [Music] anybody else but first we have hi Nate so we
have Sean Gordon from Gordon CPA and so you can talk about our annual Auto reports I'll just let you take it off hello my name is Sean Gordon with Gordon CPA um I'll go through the bound copy of the audit that you have in front of you uh we'll discuss section by section uh feel free to stop me if you have any questions along the way we'll start with pages one through three this is called the independent Auditor's report for those of you that have seen our audit reports from over the past few years you'll notice that this section has kind of changed a little bit it was required to be reformatted by the states required to be reformatted by the state so just a little bit of language movement around so the auditor's opinion
used to be buried towards the bottom of the section it's now towards the top so the third paragraph down on page one you'll see a paragraph that that just communicates that the highest and cleanest opinion we could give the district first financial statements we did give the district first financial statements further on down here we talk about management and the board's responsibilities for the financial statements and our responsibilities as well uh you'll see on page four this is called the summary statement of receipts expenditures and unencumbered ending cash you'll see in the left-hand column all of the funds of the district and then you'll see beginning cash receipts expenditures and then ending cash and then you'll see at the very bottom of that right hand column the district reported a little over 7.5 million dollars
in cash on hand at June 30th 2022. the next section forward starts on page five and runs through Page 12. these are called the notes to the financial statements quite a bit of information is discussed here including the district's accounting policies um involvement in the Capers retirement program long-term debt information budgeted transfers as I said so a lot of information discussed here uh one thing I want to point out here is on page 10. and it is note number note number 11 statutory violation we have to report any statutory violations that we find so this was the only one that we found and it had to do with actual expenditures within the Food Service fund were more than budgeted so that's a violation of that statute that you see there so just something that we
wanted to communicate to the board members um and then the next section of the bound copy you have starts on page 13 and runs through Page 39. these are just more detailed breakouts of those funds that you saw on page four so um more detailed breakouts you'll see a comparison to the prior year which was fiscal year 2021 and you'll also see a comparison to how the budget how the fund performed according to its budget as well as I said the only uh issue was the Food Service fund budget wise every other fund was was good news nothing nothing to report there and then the final section starts on page 40 and runs through Page 47. this is called the single audit section um anytime an entity receives and spends 750 000 or more of
Federal grant money it's required to undergo what's called a single audit so on page 40 you'll see all of the different Federal grant funds uh federal grants that the district had during the year and then the total of those expenditures down towards the bottom for fiscal year 2022 we were required to audit the um Child Nutrition cluster which are the school breakfast the lunch program and the summer food service program that are within the Food Service fund and for that audit we also issued an unmodified opinion which again is the highest and cleanest opinion that we're allowed to issue under federal guidelines so both of those unmodified opinions show that um you know the financial statements no issues there no issues with internal control management of the district and that all Federal grant guidelines were
followed by The District staff um we had one Auditor's comment um it was presented on a separate piece of paper and it had to do with the food service cash balance that cash balance was greater than the ksde recommended levels so our recommendation is just try to get that down uh to that recommended level by the Department of Education we had a good audit this year we appreciate Nathan and all the staff involved in the audit it was his first audit with us and so he he performed very well it was it was Mr Dodge's first audit as well uh with us but they both handled great everybody answered our questions timely and we had no issues with that so if you have any questions on any of that please let me know foreign going
through that entire process so thank you very much um the question I had about the food service because we were aware that was part of the um because there's a balance that we have to spend down but then you have the federal program and I think that's where correct yeah yeah exactly yes because of the federal program that was agreed yes um um but you gave His Highest to clean the same way so obviously you're convinced that there's yeah yeah exactly yeah and that was a recommendation that we've given to quite a few districts around because of all the Covenant that was floating so yes exactly yeah I just want to make sure and kind of give that a little more attention yes because that's a relatively new you a good issue yes yes does
anybody else have any uh questions about the report I believe we do have to have a motion to accept the um the financial statement that's been given uh Tony has moved and Chris has seconded that we accept the excuse me Gordon CP annual audit presentation as presented all those in favor please say aye aye motion carries 6-0 thank you very much great job everybody budget update yeah and so we want to give a quick uh update from last week's meeting so Mr Dodge and I visited with the county today to finalize our uh Mills update for the adjustment for the Bodo ruling so we received that today and so we'll continue to work with them as far as the returns over over the course of the next few weeks or months with that and they've
also helped us in the contacting with Franklin County what small piece of that we have as well so just to kind of give you a reference the the new Mill for the lob or supplement General will be a 7.991 uh so the total amount came out to 666 200. uh was the final from the county so that's really all the update I have at this time unless you have anything Mr Dodge okay um do you mind so inter we've talked about all this at the last meeting but just so there's um so it's clear um the purview of what we could have only taken it from could not come from the 20. it's from the the local the areas that we have the local control over the 20 mils is in statute that the district
probably see that last year and this year and there was some question about whether I know we decided what we decided but I've had some follow-up questions so in case any other community members were interested why can that not come from the 20 that's given by the state and we did receive additional information from the state about what you can and cannot do do you mind speaking to that well it's um education just so that folks are assured that all those things are being double checked triple checked Etc um what what uh Dr Knight fonder shared with us was under Section B of the KSA 75-524 5142 States in part the tax required under Section subsection a shall be levied at a rate of 20 mils in the school years of 21 22 and 22
06523. section A is about financing the general funding budget of the school district the phase shall be Levy leave the district no auction which we knew but just further reinforcement on that okay one question I have about the counties are there are they vastly different internal Douglas no uh obviously this is the first all right so uh they're collaborating just because because of that okay um so they're just they're assisting us with just the initial contact but again we'll follow up over the next course of the few weeks to do that so any other questions anybody else foreign thank you thank you all right moving on to administrative reports kasb policy updates so last month we shared with you about nine different uh recommendations from ksb um we had about two that don't necessarily reflect
us because we don't have that currently as a policy the rest of them we did for the reasons either putting us in an alignment with statute or what it does it's the recommendation that provides a significant update which is or I guess procedural or some timelines to uh staff do uh gcrf and it's listed that way under the update recommendations PDF so then all right second Chris has moved and Susan has seconded to approve the ksb policy update recommendations as provided to us all those in favor please say aye and raise your right hand by motion carries 6-0 thank you okay operations update so I've asked Mike to be here to provide an update with regards to his continued work with our Environmental Services slash maintenance department um and give you kind of an update
of where he is um some of the the challenges that uh they've been working on overcoming and some of the Creative Solutions that he's come up with that also provide really nice alignment with the Strategic plan in the area of a student account or student engagement a student care for our facility so turn over do you guys I sent out a uh outline um and I have been talking about our staffing problems um start off with we do have I have 11 members underneath of me uh eight of those members are 62 and older so they're they're getting up there and and probably within the next three or four years I'll be having to hire quite a few um you know because of this some of these buildings aren't receiving some of the attention that
they need um not just because of their age because of our staffing problems um and with the bond projects we're going to be adding facilities such as Stadium or CTE or both that's going to add more square footage which means more cleaning which means more staff um I've been trying to put a lot of thought into this um stole some ideas from other districts and um came up with some programs that we're trying first one is the uh bringing in students part-time and seeing if they would like to help out with the cleaning of the schools kind of ironic that on my way here tonight Ryan called and said he had approached a student that works for another business here in town and talked to her about it and she was pretty excited so if
we can get this all finalized maybe we'll have our first part-time student working for us um next one that we this one I kind of got from another District utilizing clubs and organizations to help us clean up after events I didn't really realize how big a deal this was until this winter sports season and really didn't figure out that it was a big deal until this week we've got basketball games every night in both gyms wrestling one night um so we were offering clubs organizations and teams District sponsored the opportunity to come in help us clean up and for high school events we'll pay them a certain amount of money for Junior High events pay him another amount junior high will be less than the high school because there's less cleaning with the high school
events especially with basketball you've got the two gyms to clean two sets of locker rooms so we haven't had a lot of feedback on that we've had wrestlers have been doing this since before I got here they do a phenomenal job cleaning up after their tournaments and their duels so I just took it I said if you guys want to keep doing it I'll sign you up for every wrestling tournament or every duel and we'll pay you to do it and then you can put that toward your team um I did have when we first put it on the Bulldog bulletin I forgot to put District sponsored and I actually had some travel baseball and softball teams contact me so I said sorry this is just for district students right now but you know maybe
in the in the future we can do something sorry um along that line when was last week Jenny Bernard contacted me and wanted to know if because she knows that we're down one one uh custodian at the high school and she wanted to know if there was any way that her club and culinary students could pitch in for donations and help us clean so we came up with a program for them and we'll be finalizing that tomorrow getting them all the stuff that they need and they're actually going to start helping us two or three times uh evenings or afternoons a week and uh we'll give them some money donated to I think they're wanting to take a trip to Wichita and then Denver or something like that so we'll be helping them out in
that way then and they'll be helping out us out of a bunch um another thing that we're looking at um we have had Subs in the past we've lost Subs um over at the PC I have a pair that is subbing like they call it ourselves I call her part-time custodian but she works uh two nights a week four hours a night and she's done a phenomenal job um in fact we're down our daytime custodian there and Ryan has been pitching in there and um he has gotten that school uh turned around um I think it's it's cleaner than I've ever seen it um and with her help and the nighttime custodian that we hired they really turned it around and that's what I'm kind of hoping to do with the other schools is find
some subs to fill in especially when people are sick but also to fill in during the night or day and help with outlying buildings like the do the DSs the industrial arts and give us a little bit of extra cleaning um during the week was stuff that you know we don't can't normally pick up you know our paint crew was a seasonal or a part-time crew then and they did a phenomenal job last year on the junior high um the future I I think to get people from the local community um you know and you guys have heard this before and you know what I'm going to say I think we need to find a way to raise the wages um and I would like to have get to a point where we can get
the maintenance staff and the environmental services staff on a Level Playing Field because they they both have skills that they each bring to the table special skills and if you've seen some of the messes that the environmental services staff have to clean up they deserve more money so any questions and in the future I'm you know I know that's not we can't do that in the near future but to be sustainable and what I'm trying to avoid is doing what other districts are doing and bringing in uh contractors and doing away with the local community and I don't I think Baldwin is a it's it's a small got a lot a lot like Anthony from where I came from small community close-knit and they want to pitch in so I'm gonna keep them here I
want to point out to create a solution about using students and not our long-term replacement for that we've we've had a position uh we were talking about we really need three additional staff to get us to where we need to be two of those positions are fill in current vacancies that we've been trying to fill we've got one more I forgot yeah and what's that when we were talking today I forgot about the daytime position that no it'll be what did you say three we had three yes three three yeah so I know two of those positions we've been trying to fill for the last two months um we've had on the website and it's just not getting a whole lot of traction um and and so it's the students here getting them into the
mix it's it's one it meets an engagement piece that we've got in section four of our strategic plan but it's not the long term all right we're just gonna do this on the backs of kids um I think this is something that we would continue to do even with the full staff to think it's a great opportunity to support our students keep our uh keep our involvement there but there's also things during the school day that need to be done and Mike's not going to tell you this but I will Mike's been putting in some long hours trying to fill that Gap and he does that because that's what good leaders do and he's not going to say anything about us and I will um it's we've got a staff that's dedicated and whether it's
my Ryan Mary from the leadership side of things they're working really hard in all of our crew of custodians in our Matt Brown's crew are doing a phenomenal job doing despite the short staffing that they have they have um I think the salary piece is something we've talked about good service that's it's applying to other areas as well it's just the necessary we need right now actually tonight I've got the first applicant for a custodial job and since we posted it so it had been almost two months I really rates on those depend on experience or are they advertised at a certain age they're advertised I think at our base rate correct yes 12 42. and I think the students I think we decided at 12 bucks an hour for them um yeah well I
love the creativity of student groups I mean groups are always looking for ways to make money for certain so I think I think that's awesome um you know in terms of the long-term plan for um getting into a place where we don't have to subcontract everything I mean from our standpoint like we need to keep thinking about this from a holistic view because this is you know this comes up in transportation food service and custodial Environmental Services I mean this is it's a it's a bigger picture thing and we in terms of folks um approaching or having gone past uh retirement we've had a lot of people who work in this community have dedicated their careers and their lives to the district and we're not getting the same rate of replacement um and part of
that has to do with what we're able to offer in that sense so I appreciate you trying to keep it local because that's what we want to be and what we want to do um but that doesn't happen in a vacuum and that's going to be something budgetarily that we look at next year for sure we have to put a pin in it now but we I mean it's not just this area it's across it's across the board so well most most of my members are long-term except for my two maintenance staff and um one of them is retired and the other one is Young and says he loves it here and wants to stay and wants to learn and move up um and then I've been very lucky on on who I've hired and
had gotten to hire except for one so um but I think there's good people out there it's just you know getting the word out there and getting them in here um yeah it's nice when we can do it that way boom if it's your own Community you care at a different level you see that across the board too so thank you for keeping us up to speed on what the challenges are so we're we're good but we good with everything that we're doing I mean I don't we don't need emotion or anything okay thanks Mike yep thank you very much old business uh in real life so we want to follow up uh from actually the original presentation from the environment uh Environmental Group excuse me uh back in I believe November we met last
month to discuss the possible motion to accept the program and we did ask some additional questions I did share those into your packet but I'll kind of go over those real quick a couple questions we had was one where the container for Honey Creek would be place which uh currently is going to be proposed by the high school doc we currently have trash bin there don't think I was visiting with Mike we don't think that currently that that'll be an issue and it will be a secured uh top so we won't have any public use um so at this point that's kind of that answered the questions from last time our proposal this evening is to go ahead and accept or request that we move forward with the program for at least 12 months this
would be partially allocated by the funding that the students the student program had completed which covers six months of fees for that Service Plus the container setting so we would cover the second six months which is about 980 we think you know the students did a very good great job in their presentation and I think we won at least you know visit that and and that's that's what I would like to request this evening so what gets us into a new fiscal year when we have to kick our part in so correct correct I'm thankful for the groundwork they did with getting their uh sponsorships and donations from all the local businesses that they did because that that from my understanding that covers it through the end of this fiscal July and then we're fresh
so so Andrew was kind enough to come this evening too just in case we had any additional questions this evening but uh that's all I had and would like to make the request to move forward sorry thanks all right uh Susan uh moved and Chris has seconded to accept the environmental Club request for one year and then we will reevaluate at the end of that next time all those in favor please say aye raise your right hand I motion carries six zero thank you very much okay Bond exploration update um so one of our our subcommittee members is not here tonight so Bill you and I and Mr Gage if we miss something feel free to to jump in um of where we are what was our last our last meeting we talked about this
was about January 9th I don't know it all rolls together we are meeting again as a subcommittee with um uh with Lloyd Builders and uh DLR being on hand this coming Monday the 23rd okay Mr Dodge had sent you all some information for you all to think about part of part of the reason why we paused and didn't bring a recommendation in early January as originally planned in in the timeline that was suggested was that um we want as we've shared previously we wanted to have more time to study it in light of some shifts of what we thought we were going to be able to do with capital outlay when you do a bond study as we know we're not going to be able to do everything that comes out of that but the
benefit of doing the work of the study is that it brings to light all of the things district-wide that need to be attended to at some point so that you can then translate that one into the decision of whether or not the board wants to proceed with a public election but then the other part of that is to Enlighten the process of what we need to do for long-term capital planning in light of the the voter ruling in terms of what we were thinking we were having to do that is why we paused and said hey this may make a difference depending on how much we now need to take out of capital outlay in what way does that affect the lens in which we're viewing what is you know should or should not be
captured through the bond process so that was the reason for the pause and why we wanted to continue to take the time to study that um you know as part of that one of the main things that we've been studying is what does it look like and what can be accomplished with flat and what can it look like and be accomplished if you do if you raised a mill um I'm not placing any editorial opinion on that I'm simply reporting the information that's come through us that we've been studying if anybody has strong feelings about any of that this is an opportunity to express that to ask questions about that I don't want to get too far in the weeds of editorializing because the subcommittee still needs to meet and also needs to then be
in a position to bring back a recommendation but at every point of the way the reason why this has been listed as part of old business every single time is that so we can give you as much information as we're looking at from the broad view and give that opportunity to say hey what about this what about that or for the the board in its entirety sorry my stomach just growled again distracting so anyway s there is that additional attitude no no because in fact that what they showed what we're at right now is nothing like that okay it's pretty paired down okay yes and again the three after what the purpose of that presentation because again our role in terms of observing the committee work was to let the committee work from all those
community members be the the community members work so we were very hands-off intentionally so that the result could be the result um what was given to to as part of the presentation was here are the results as it came through the committee and that's when we say okay now we need to make sure that the scale of this is appropriate so at our last meeting that's why we said okay we I we don't we don't throw all that out that's important but we also have to make sure there's balance in in the financial planning of that you have to make sure that we're it's not all just at one school and we have to make sure that we're accomplishing more than one thing which is why the three areas that came out that was consistent
education Safety and Security and um Outdoor Learning and activities with kind of re uh what was the word that that you you used and it was perfect distilling distillation yes um so that's the part that we're still in right um and what we're going to be doing for a final time uh next Monday night in terms of the what does it look like with holding flat at 15 or now that 5.67 mils essentially has been shaved you can't do as much with like putting in a new parking lot at the IC like I'm thinking that belongs I must be honest like to me that belongs as part of your Capital outlay funding that you do all along why would I think to put that in the bond I don't want to do that however when
you shave 5.67 mils it's got to come from somewhere that was the pause of well do you can you do more with with another Mill that you know as far as some of the safety things that we wanted to to look at gave it more time to kind of study and shake that out so we wanted to make sure you guys had that opportunity to to weigh in further on that so keep thinking we don't meet until next Monday I'm not trying to put anybody on the spot but certainly if you have questions areas of feedback based on what you know thus far please do not be shy um and feel free to contact either Kelly Phil or Mr Dodge or myself okay I'll just say here I think the inclusion of a mill is
an interesting idea I'm glad you guys are exploring you yeah well we'll keep we'll keep working then all right yes we're going to take a break a bathroom break at 7 53 so we'll call a recess uh to negotiate the CMR contract Mr Dodge is going to speak with us about that part of it so to uh proceed with the construction manager at risk process with Lloyd um we have been going through some negotiations process ASB on our behalf has helped us through that uh through a three-week period in December um so they did a really good job and the contract itself is pretty basic and I sent you a one pager of the highlights there and it's pretty standard contract that KS kasd I thought it was really a good contract that they put
together um and uh there any questions that you have I can answer to the best of my ability um but uh if you'll approve the contract itself I can I can sign them sign the documents and get it back to Lloyd and we can uh kind of proceed with that that portion of the process thanks for all that work Mark and I want to say whatever possible I'm very grateful for ksb and their legal guidance in such a manner kids I believe Nate what are your thoughts on that is it considered one contract or should we need to approve each one individually so one contract yeah and to that point it's a a good point the exhibiting that we've got there uh once we have if you do decide to proceed with an election for
a bond uh and that bond amount is known then Amendment uh exhibit a would be updated with the actual GMP a very good so no approval on the exhibits what's that no approval on the exhibits no motion well we need to approve the um the contract process pending the further any you know further action later so I still think we have to have a motion for approval for the general contract right we're not mentioning all the other things okay foreign so is it enough to say I moved to approve the sonar contract with the Lloyd as president a second okay Andy has moved and Chris is seconded to approve the construction management at risk contract as presented all those in favor please say aye and raise your right hand I motion carries 6-0 so just
to finish off that agenda item for clarity of timelines January 23rd the bond subcommittee will be meeting again okay so you have a little less than a week to get back with us if there's other things you'd like or questions ideas input Etc um now that we have an official we've completed the process for the construction management at risk in its entirety thanks for hanging in on that and it's been a journey to Nate's work facilitating through that process with kasd and with Lloyd um did a great job there countless hours yes and we learned a lot as we did it um then the the we'll have a special meeting in February as we had intended to in January whereby we will bring back a recommendation um and and not just bring back a recommendation
but that will really be the completion and Reporting back to the board in the community about the study in its entirety okay all right cool all right moving on to new business mission statement all right so what uh you've put in your board package there is a a draft and what you've got is a little more than the mission statement what it is is a it's our feedback loop that we've developed uh that with the mtss process realignment process that we've done um and where we put the mission statement is within that graphic and I will say drew eising is the the Creator uh and Visionary of this actual graphic Union it's not here for me to give them that credit but uh he did a good job he came up with several different themes
um put together but this piece that I wanted to bring your attention to is the the mission statement there and uh through this process with mtss realignment we were talking about our mission statement what is our foundation what do we believe in and we kept coming back to our hashtag Baldwin bill in the conversations that we are committed to in terms of finding success for our students we're academic socially emotional and behavioral and through the course of the conversation we landed on we wanted something that was short in essence that it could be easy to remember the easier to recite and even our students could commit to memory and it will be something that reflects the practice and then our why in terms of what we do and and so we we felt that this
this is our mission statement that we've come up with Baldwin built is an adjective preparing students to positivity impact the world through academic social emotional and behavioral success um our building principles took this uh this statement back to their building leadership teams seeking some wordsmithing seeking some feedback and more to it outside of uh trying to kind of change the location of where students were within the sentence and the phrase uh that this meaning itself is what we we came back with and as we discussed that feedback that was there we we stuck with with this phrase here with students being first at the very beginning of that um and then meeting them through academic social emotional and behavioral success is the drive of what we do and why we do it's reflected within our
strategic plan it's reflective within the practices that take place within each building and we feel that it's reflective of the vision that you and the board have provided to us so is what we've come up with if you want to again it's new business so I'm not going to ask for any uh the approval of this tonight but if you want to think about it provide us some feedback we do meet again as an mpss team on February 9th um so if there's some feedback you want us to consider we were able to do that but in February I would ask the board to consider this as our approval for our mission statement she used to graphic you know to give feedback on the graphic yourself a gigantic long t-shirt technologically it has a bigger
overarchy so so I think it looks fantastic thank you thanks for sharing that I like the hard hats yeah all right board member input Co-op report um yes uh there's not much to update yes uh the only big thing to keep in mind is that we are already entering hiring season for the club as well it tends to be just a smidgen early I could try to Goblet of all those speech language pathologists as well so um besides yeah that's it so you've had four meetings in the last week yes yes yeah so I will say my my middle daughter asked here today I'm glad she wasn't you know foreign all right miscellaneous any anybody have anything under miscellaneous yeah um the only thing I have uh you know I think everybody gets these emails
ksb offers these uh training things periodically and I think the next I always try to alert when there's a a boardsmanship one coming up in our area the only one that is happening that I could see unless you want to drive out to dodge uh Topeka on January 27th if that's something of interest um and I believe there are online Zoom versions of that too um I I redid one on Zoom during whatever year it was and it's it's a great class because it helps refresh like procedural kinds of things um so I mean it's a really good class I prefer the in person I feel like I got more out of it and it's nice to be able to talk to other people and ask questions but so are they back to doing it
in the room into people yes they are and that's why I wanted to bring it back to your attention because they are doing the in-person sessions again so if anybody's ever interested in any of that kind of stuff I try to gobble up the financial ones because I love highest and cleanest but man I have to like I really have to study that stuff to understand it but Megan is a point of contact for that she can register anybody for anything they want to do so that's all I had under miscellaneous excuse me um anybody else have anything they want to add if not we'll move on to superintendent's report Mr Dodge all right um I've got two items there one of them I put in the agenda tonight enrollment study this is something come
up in the visioning process of doing the enrollment study there are some means you need to take care of right now that are more physical Factor more of a term maintenance solution perspective but with the idea of what's to come whether it's open borders for boundaries or whether it's the Panasonic plant that's up in DeSoto I think that there's an opportunity here to begin some work in that sense so what I'd like to do next month as part of new business is provide some information regarding an enrollment study and get an idea of what that can do what kind of information we can get from that as it pertains to our current environment and then I would recommend they'll give us kind of a five-year projection of what that could look like and then in
two years do it again um to see where we are with that trajectory within that the first couple of years of that Five-Year Plan um give us an idea of what we need to do uh moving forward um and uh there are various firms that are out there that do a good job it's important to us for us to understand in order for them to view a rooftop as a home as part of this enrollment study there needs to be infrastructure to the development area and so we've got some land that our city has taken on with with some annexation it allows a couple years for some infrastructure to be there so we'll have an update in terms of you know the number of students average students per household and they base that off of
our current environment so um next month I hope to have some I'll have some information there's part of new business a couple of firms or at least a couple of ideas stuff organizations we can reach out to is something weird would do in conjunction with the city like in terms of understanding their their resulting practices and how that may be managed and you know that I be honest with you that's not I didn't have that in mind but now that you're bringing it up I don't know that that's a bad idea given especially given the meaning that we just had last week for some partnership I can reach out to Casey and see I can't see that comes up so I may have some you know looking back the questions I think everybody's working understanding
is that Panasonic is likely going to be a very different reality than Intermodal a few years ago it's a different it's a different um salary level in terms of what and and so I it's I'm glad that we're going to study it because I think it's I think it's going to be Intermodal didn't pan out the way necessarily people thought it was going to for lots of different reasons but I think I think Panasonic's a whole different deal and um so we have to look at it differently and as Mark alluded to um I was on the board when we were doing that last Bond and we did a study and they said you're not going to see any growth because you don't have any developments going in so there's nowhere for people to go
and we know that's changing um the second item there is next month this is kind of a trigger for me when we talked about when we provided the co-op report next month uh Dan Ray's asked to provide a state of the co-op report for our district he's done a good job of trying to maintain some some steady assessments for us in a manageable way in the work that they've done with creative manner but they've gone about trying to fill their needed positions it's a good opportunity to provide a picture for the board so he's he's doing that for the wants to provide that for the three districts and the co-op and I told them we can put that on in February so for that to come other than that that's all I have okay all
right executive session um I move we enter into executive session with Mr Dodge and Mr wall Smith to discuss which is regarding the exception relating to actions adversely or favorably um affecting a student under coma sorry that's the justification and the open meeting will resume at CSA 15 so I'm going to say 8 21. all those in favor I should carry 60 row Chris seconded session with Mr Dodge to discuss Personnel uh pursuant to the justification under coma for non-elected personnel and the open meeting will resume five minutes 8 27. Phil seconded all those in favor aye motion carries 6-0 we're having big thoughts over here coffee okay so calling the meeting back to order there is no Personnel report this evening uh so the only thing we have left to do is motion for
adjournment but stick around because we do have resolutions that we do need to everybody needs to sign for what was approved earlier okay all right [Laughter] okay Phil moved and Chris seconded that we adjourn all those in favor please say aye all right meeting adjourned uh 8 28 6-0 all right that was so much earlier than I told Nathan we were gonna get out of here
