during december break but we'll give more information on that later okay and we can discuss any of these things um later in our reopening school if you have questions the aspa ritual law conference was last um wednesday thursday turkey thursday friday and there are some of the topics that are that were included if you missed a session and you have more information this one is a binder that we're putting together that has the powerpoints so if you'd like to read up on any of what was presented at the law conference they're there good topics even for our team in terms of digital citizenship and social media and looking at title ix regulations so it was good information and i know some of you board members attended so you can share with us the discussion on
something that you found interesting or that you learned updates and events so rotary we installed a peace poll at desert meadows park garden saturday so there's um you know miss laura peter she's part of our parent advisory and olivia is one of our students and um there we have charlotte gates our board president so that was a fun event and we also received an eight thousand dollar check for rotary grant on the continental outdoor musical park and fifteen hundred dollars for jazz in the desert so a big huge thank you to mr ferguson and available for a um picture today with the chicks before i turned him over to mr schubert so we are very grateful and know that we have a lot of rotary support um they're always thinking about us in terms of
grants and what they can do to help us and they are going to be part of the breaking ground on the outdoor musical park and we're hoping to get it done by november so we could do an appreciation during thanksgiving for the royalties that helped us install and a little touch of humor this is featured from one of our second grade classrooms so treat your mask like underwear do not borrow or lend it do not share it make sure it's clean change it daily and make sure it fits snug but not too tight so i wasn't sure if this was going to be appropriate but mr nathan thought it was very appropriate [Music] so again as a reminder this is something they reminded us of during the law conference that when the superintendent does their
report that it's not an opportunity for questions of discussion but if there are questions on any information that's presented or questions please let us know so we can make an agenda item at the next meeting or address at a later time thank you and we will keep calm and sail on and um board members are welcome to come help us out on thursday friday if you want to come by and see how it's going we will be in the parking lot taking temperatures and escorting kids to their kinder classrooms and we're trying to figure out how we usually do our title one meeting and our guru breakfast for our kinder parents so i believe they're planning to meet at a different location but is where us and i will do a google hangout for the
kinder parents as well that morning so thank you that concludes my report thank you okay principal's report it is appropriate to ask questions of her because her presentation has been posted we've had a chance to review so you can ask any questions for clarification so i'm going to go ahead and start good evening everyone i would like to start with just talking to you about what we're doing with spotlighting our teachers and showcasing their instruction as a way as a form of what i'm referring to as a lesson studies and one of the things that we're doing is tying it to our evaluation instrument which is the dentist and evaluation which our teachers are evaluated on and for instance this month one of the domains that we're going over and showcasing is domain three instruction
component 3a communicating with students so we've been spotlighting them on our weekly news their digital lessons where they're able to showcase highly effective attributes for teaching that align with the indicators of their evaluation instruments progress reports are due teachers are going to be posting everything so that parents will have availability to progress reports on parent view wednesday the 16th which is this wednesday we wanted to give you an update on nwea map which is our new instrument that we're using our new program that we're using to do benchmark testing quarterly benchmark testing it is a new program we used to use ati but right now what we're doing is we're training our teachers with this new program and they have to do some online trainings getting started while using map growth get students ready for
map growth and get yourself ready to be a proctor and the deadline for them to complete these trainings is tomorrow is wednesday so then we'll have continuous conversations about that because it's a new program to all of us and we're really excited about it teachers that have already completed the trainings i've heard some really great things about it they're very excited to use this new testing instrument we've also been i'd like to share with you our lesson plan expectations as we go into this school year for our teachers when they post their lesson plans as they create their lesson plans what we would like to see is their learning standard and they'll be placing these either outside their doors so if we're doing walk-throughs we can look at their lesson plans before we walk in
know what we're walking into what we're going to be observing and seeing we can offer feedback or have conversations with them or if they have questions or we're also going to be um where they'll have a place that they're going to designate in their classroom and they let us know where it's at but the lesson plans will have the learning standard on them it will have the learning objective so it's very clear as to the learning that is taking place essential questions that they're going to be posing to the students in regards to the standards and the objectives of the week's learning and a brief description for the lesson of the day and they'll also note in their lesson funds any formative assessments that will be taking place daily midweek or at the end of
the week in addition to the lesson plans one thing that we really want to have in mind and i've spoken to many of the teachers is daily objectives board and the central questions board so if you were to walk through our classrooms from pre-k all the way through eighth grade you would see that that's aligned in all the classrooms as you walk in you would see what the daily objective is for the day what the teachers are teaching the essential questions that they're posing to the students and essential questions help the students to understand the relevancy of the standards that they're learning why why are they learning it many times when we're growing up we sit in a classroom and we think what's the point of this so it's important that they understand what they're
learning and why the teachers responded to doing that we've had some discussions already with teachers they did it many years ago or a few years back some of them held on to it and some of them are really excited about getting it back in action because it was it was a great tool and an instrument or a daily resource for their students so it's something we're really excited to see because i know one of the things we talk a lot about as i walk through and speak with teachers is alignment throughout our school and that's something that we want to be cohesive as a team and be able to when you walk into classrooms as your children or the children grow up we're going to have common a common theme throughout our school and we're
going to start here with our daily objectives boards our lesson plans format will look the same so the teacher evaluation process we've gone over teacher evaluations we did a part one session so we could go over what the probationary teachers expectations are and the continuing status so a probationary teacher is a certified teacher who has not been employed by our district for three years and the policy requires a minimum of two formal observations or evaluations annually if the probationary teacher exhibits unsatisfactory skills in more than three areas that are on the danielson evaluation rubric he or she must be placed on an improvement plan and an additional evaluation must take place in addition to the two continuing status is given to certified teachers who have been in the district longer than three years so it's
their fourth consecutive teaching contract with the district after being employed by the district for more than a major portion of three consecutive years if the continuing status teacher exhibits on satisfactory skills in more than one area he or she must be placed on an improvement plan and an additional evaluation must take place so i just wanted to give you some insight into how we do our evaluations here teacher evaluation performance in an effort to create a comprehensive picture for teacher effectiveness the following is completed throughout the school year we have a pre-conference where our teachers will be going over their teacher self assessment it's a rubric that they fill out based on how they see where they're at and where they fall on the rubric and we discuss with them their evaluators the professional development
plan and learning goals that they set for themselves for the school year then we have a pre-observation conference where the discussion of the lesson takes place the lesson that they will be observed and evaluated on and they will have the following documents turned in to us which is the danielson pre-observation planning document that they find on their frontline accounts which we use and then also the lesson plan template that they will provide us with their lessons so we can follow along while we're evaluating them we have the formal observations and then we end the year with the post observation conference also a post observation conference after each observation but the discussion of domains one and three rubric scores take place and domain four has to do with professional development so that happens at the end
of the school year and they turn these documents to us and we discuss their post observations go over it give feedback and it's one of the things that i've told the teachers is i was a teacher it's it when the evaluation process happened it was more of a compliance but we don't want this to be a compliance it's a learning experience it's something that we're able to be able to help coach to help to discuss together and come up with really great plans and goals and able to it gives us the time to point out areas of strains and areas where growth and progression can take place and it gets exciting last year a lot of the conversations i had with the teachers that i was evaluating it it's already fed into this school year
so because we're continuing they have really great goals that they want to reach and it's it's a great process i don't want them to just look at it as something we have to do it's something that's going to make our school even more richer for doing it so the domains when i speak about domains these are the domains and under each domain there's a number of components so domain one is planning and preparation domain two is creating classroom environment domain three is instruction and domain four is professional responsibilities what student data is included so part of the overall evaluation at the end of the year their composite score that they get the district before in the past has decided that it would either fall some districts to state testing scores from the year prior or
it could be the district benchmark scores thank you so that is the data that is figured into the overall composite score when everything is entered in their evaluations um the rubric scores that they have and then we're going to be doing part two of the evaluation process with our teachers so we can really go over the frontline program that they use and it would be we would be going over teacher self assessment the pre and post observation document so they know exactly what they are if they have any questions domain for artifacts this is them holding on to lessons that they've taught student work uh parent letters that they send home projects that they've done and they can upload them to this frontline system or they can hold on to create a portfolio that at
the end of the year when we conference together they show and we go over all of their work that they have completed and done and then we discuss that's at the summative review and then we go over the composite score for the year which is where we discuss then the composite score then places them in the overall of being effective and effective or so on andy and i just wanted to clarify just to let everybody know so charlotte danielson was the teacher researcher founder of the model of the evaluation system so when you see danielson that's what that means but fretline is the system the ten the company that promotes the danielson model so when you hear so a lot of times the teachers will refer to frontline you know it's their evaluation system that's
when they log in and they can see the rubrics they can see their scores and any of the notes that we have taken of the evidence that we've gathered when we walk into a classroom and we evaluate and the teacher knows that we're evaluating we are taking down taking down evidence that falls under each of the domains and the components so that we can discuss that with them and they can discuss it with us too so now we're moving on to a place to go program i just wanted to update everyone we've been serving 41 students and the place to go program this is students needing a place to be at while school was being done digitally so we've been doing this since august 17th it's been a successful program thanks to our teachers mrs
testo and this is mimbrella and all of our programmatic assistants mr lathan and everybody who's been taking part we've had some students transported here as well so thank you to our transportation department everyone who's helped in creating this to be successful we have students 15 of them who are half day 21 who were full day from 8 to 3 and then preschool which is pre-k the first five students in active students we initially had 36 inactive students who had been consistently inactive in their classes some that were not showing up at all some that were doing things sporadically so teachers did emails did calls and then we had a document that we were keeping track of and have been noting home visits have been made by us by teachers as well packets have been created
for those students hot spots the khajiits for wi-fi have been delivered to students some parents have even come and brought them pick them up here when they told us this is the issues that we're having so some students have improved with their work and performance teachers as well as us are administrating our monitoring and doing check-ins with our students and families and grades will be reflecting their lack of participation and missing work and teachers have been continuing those conversations with our students and families as well as us going into highlights we did a continental back to school drive-through parade as a staff we have library guest readers that our librarian mrs lathan has been has been showcasing the students all have access to this library and to this classroom into reading viewing all of our
guest readers and getting to hear great stories and there's miss nurse maureen for i think it was national pets day she dressed like a puppy so she could do some recordings of reading to the students and then we have music class which has been going phenomenal it's been great for all of our students to be able to have access to continuing continuous music instruction as well as physical education mrs tesso has put out a video and she's collecting daily exercise minutes from students and promoting fitness daily our school counselor and her intern mrs scott have been sharing counseling videos have set up a cult chat for students to be able to speak to them if they have any social emotional needs for our students during this time they've been very supportive and they also have
a google classroom that students have continuous access to at any time that they need we're also still promoting our continental website so any parents who are on the phone or who are watching live please make sure if you have not done so already to visit our continental website at www.continentalesd.org it's important to continuously visit that website because that's where we have most up-to-date information and every week on our our continental news to our staff we are showcasing a teacher's web page that they have and teachers are still working on their web pages and we're excited for the return of our colts and our families we've missed our students and families it's been very long and we're ready to have them back so are there any questions and the final thing that i would like to
do is we have some very generous donors that i would like to thank we have ken and carol radmer we want to thank them for a donation of computer monitors and keyboards and robert mori moreland i think we'd like to thank him for a donation of a trumpet to our school thank you any questions okay our consent agenda in a second any discussion um i i just have a question if the finance report can go up there i just want to make sure i understand understand this if i'm reading this correctly the receipts expense is obviously what we've spent the encumbrant amount is what we're required to spend or what's in teacher salaries and yet yet to be yet to be spent but but committed is that correct so it well it depends on what
you which which which section of the report that you're talking about there's a couple different sections there's the the cash portion and then there's the expenditure portion so like the example that's on the screen direct currently right now the fund 0103 that's cash that we actually have on deposit at the county treasurer's office 1990 is miscellaneous revenue that we've received in 3120 additional state aid members that we have received going down beneath that the 6100s and everything else that is all expenditures okay so i'm not 100 sure what the question is is this a fiscal year-to-date report this was as of i believe i sent this to you on the ninth it says this is at the september 9th 2020. so it's uh considered uh july 1st to september 9th yes yes yes it is
okay thank you are you sure sir because i want to make sure i don't want to leave you with any further questions i'm okay if i have some i'll i'll just email you okay that's fine questions one one more question there's a substitute custodian and i understand the need for this but i'm also wondering at times would it be in a better interest to contract that outside without it being an employee i mean if we need if we need sodium services on an emergency basis because one of our existing custodians called in sick um so usually the contractors are a lot more expensive than if they are employees even are you all benefited employees no okay thank you good okay mr ayala it's unfinished business a second reading and as i went through the policies
the staff personal security and safety is all about the face coverings and the maps and the executive order about that i wondered what the student dress one was about but it also is about the face mask and the coverings in terms of them being two years or less and the parent involvement education is just the parental rights that we have posted up in the front and that's in our handbook and on our website and visitors to the school was also about discussion i have one uh question and it's policy advisory 673 that has to do with senator dale connor day yeah that's a day that apparently is being set aside for the teaching of civics yes and it's it's supposed to be on september 25th yet september 25th on our schedule was we're going to
close right so it says in the policy that if it is on the weekend that it should be receiving the following day that is observed on the weekend september 25th so we would do it we'd sell it also we can do it but that's going to be an early dismissal day also so are you questioning well i just i just wonder when are we going to do sandra day o'connor day and dedicate that day to civics instruction right so it would be that the 25th but we also do have um our civics club so we do a lot of civics things throughout the year but we could designate that friday and since it's a new policy we'll be letting our teachers know so that they can incorporate lessons on that date yes special pastor thank
you for business so there were two things we do have the cool litigation plan and um redacted copy of our coupe that we need to present to the board and have it formally approved and we've made some changes along the way up until last friday and i have mr ferguson and mr nathan here in case there's some more specific questions i do know that we wanted to have the conversation about mass on the playground because it is in our group right now that students will wear a mask while they're on the playground so we've had a lot of discussions in terms of if they're outside six feet apart can the kids not have their mass on how do we monitor that what does it look like but we wanted to get a feel for what
our world is thinking in terms of that and so mr nathan can also answer some questions among the mr ferguson when your thoughts well that was certainly my biggest question is have you it just seems to be very difficult to tell students to stay apart maybe maybe they'll be great and we do have um parents were concerned a lot of them were asking um they did not want their kids to wear masks while out on the playground um understood especially if they're running around and actually playing it would be hard to have the mask on so i have mixed feelings because i feel that if the student chooses to have a jump rope or a ball on their own and they're away from kids they should be able to take their mask off but again
in terms of security and the playground monitors i just kind of wanted um mr nathan met with the playground monitors today so do you want to share some information so thank you for giving me the opportunity board to kind of speak to this um this is obviously a very concerning subject for a lot of parents is we've been back in school for the classroom one two and three for the past four weeks we have indeed had them wear masks while on the playground they have also engaged in pe-like structure in the gym and they have worn the mask there has been no issues the kids have not they're used to it they understand that this is just cover 19. even when the kids are by themselves they've kept the mask on and there's been no
health problems with that really the integrity of the coop in my opinion is really around following a few simple principles time distancing and dosage and social distancing and proper ppp sorry ppe is required in order to ensure the integrity of the coop is being met in my opinion if we take shortcuts when the kids their social time during pe or recess and we start making exceptions that everything else goes out the window so and we talked about trying to enforce um you know if the kids six feet apart they can have their mask off but if they close that down they have to put it back on i have two monitors for about 100 kids while on the playground while it resets it's not going to happen and so from a supervising standpoint what i
can assure is that we teach the kids the importance of it and how it's at this point right i'm not saying permanently and forever but at this point this is what we need to do so that we can have them on school property that's why mrs cuevas and i and mr curtis and mr emerson have worked very very hard to provide a school classroom environment where for hours and hours a day they can have their mass off and they can learn safely but for the integrity of the coop i feel that it's extremely important that they do wear masks i spent the first 10 years of my career as a pe teacher i understand the importance of oxygen and proper oxygen flow i also have observed recess for all of those years plus as an
administrator the majority of the kids are not over exerting themselves during pe it is more of a social time i think it'd be really hard to ask one or two playground monitors to assure that we don't totally scrap what we've worked so hard to achieve and being able to open up our campus if we want to stay open we need to do our best to keep our numbers down with covid and i feel like if we just give this up and say you know we're going to make one exception here it's just going to open it up and i don't think we want to be in that position in a month and so my personal opinion is seen it work for four weeks we've had kids on campus full classrooms and have been following these
procedures we've had no issues other districts in the area opened up and were closed down in two days doing the exact same program we were the difference is is the intent the coup we followed it and in my opinion that's what's kept us in the position where we are now where we're as miss rico announced earlier we have zero cases and i contribute that to our staff following the coupe and if we make this exception which would be going against the pima county current guidelines i think that's going to put us here in a couple weeks months i don't know but in a position where we don't want to be thank you and i just wanted to ask in our group it also states that students obviously who have trouble breathing or who have asthma
and have a doctor's not will be exempt from that so um of course we would have to make sure that parents submitted to the nurse and teachers would they would be exempt from that but they would also be asked to follow procedures to ensure the safety of other people so the whole social distancing we would ask that they participate in that there's a acquaintance of mine has a form that from the ada that she has a disability it's a form you can all download from the internet like when she goes into an airplane she doesn't want to wear a mask and she just shows them that so hopefully it'll be a doctor's thing i agree with 100 what you said i mean i know my kids and their friends they don't have a and i
was scared when all this first started out these kids aren't coming over i don't think they really care that much and they're the first ones to say i don't want to get coconut i don't want to die yeah is what they said and their more responsible than us was adults i think here i am without a mass saying this but you know what i mean i i don't think it's a big deal as i said we've got zero kickback from this yeah here on campus and they came in on day one with this is the expectation and they've followed it to a t which once again contributes to our success any questions on the phone our best to get the um up a little bit here is a better spot for this one they came
here she can hear you when steve's talking from over there having problems yes and that is currently talking about mass on the playground correct there any mass on the playground yes as stated in the original coupe that's what the original plan moving forward was was it i believe it's correct me from wrong jail but transitional periods including recess so anytime kids are traveling outside their cohort where they can have that six foot social distancing they would have to be regarded by our master except for of course while eating lunch i'll move we approve the mitigation and reactive coop second motion in a second further you went on the line for further discussion [Music] well like i mentioned before it is a little bit of both you know we have some parents who say they really
don't would prefer their students not to wear masks during recess and then we have the others who say it's perfectly fine and acceptable and we understand so it's probably split the reason the reason i read the little concert is because you know um i've seen kids and me myself parents kids we walk around we just went to the ball this weekend and i see the effects in the toilet have kids that are running around playing stuff like that there are other parents that i've spoken to that have expressed concern on that same aspect as they're running around their airflow is restricted with a map and there could be a potential for casualty um you know maybe laughing after their i don't know it's just one of the concerns that was raised and i actually experienced
it over the weekend so i just wanted to make sure that you know you got to consensus from basically staff and teachers and parents input before making the decision mr agliano i'm seriously is and i don't think we have enough data so this is a motion on the group that includes as long as they're distant in the class socially distant in the classroom they do not have to wear the mask they will put on the mask when they're transitioning to the restroom or wherever they're going they do not have to wear the mask when they're eating lunch but it's going to be very difficult to enforce mass on the playground with two monitors with roughly 100 students in the orange area in a large area so this is a a motion to approve or not
the tooth that includes that portion which would be wearing mass on the playground and the mitigation plan as well and i think this is something also that when we start our students the first phase thursday friday and we reboot on friday to see how it went um might be a good time we'll have heard from parents and um you know we can always adjust the coop as we go along as we see fit and we have brought this up in the task force meetings we've also brought this up with the staff we brought in the playground monitors today which discussed it all of them were 100 in agreement with it and felt that this would be easier to enforce this than rather so as i was saying just a second ago we we have talked
about it in the task force which was composed of school board members parents teachers community members law enforcement emergency responders so this has come up through there and the consensus was and that's why we put it in the coop was to have it in there we met with the playground monitors that would be responsible for enforcing it and they felt this was the only way after talking with the group of four of them today that it was that this is reasonable and that it would be extremely challenging to have kids make the choice if they were you're talking about leaving it to a student a kindergartner to decide if they're six feet from their peers and if it's okay to take a mask they don't i mean when i'm setting up desk i have to
carry a tape measure to figure out exactly six feet from chair to chair so for us to expect our young students that's not realistic we have seen with the groups that we've had we've got three groups of kindergartners anyone from the age of four all the way to the age of 14 and they have had zero issues they have been taken out to the playgrounds during this time which has been over the last four months has been some of the hottest they've had zero issues with that they did have full recess times with that they've also been taken into the gym i went and jumped rope several times with them with my mask on and we were able to do that safely and have fun and enjoy the activity so the support from the staff
has been for the integrity of the coop and the mitigation plan this is a necessity furthermore i would argue that per pigment county we really don't have the option so they're saying that if we cannot guarantee the social distancing continental has not had a complaint because of not following the pima county mandates and really if if we want to keep with that we need to do our best and it's better to teach kids the importance of it and why we do it i understand the health risks and concerns we have really awesome staff that we'll talk about with the students if they're feeling light-headed any of that stuff what to do we talked with our playground monitors today about that and said if a kid comes to you and says i'm having a hard time
breathing get them in an area where they have social distancing take the mask off if they continue to have problems we'll be contacting the nurse immediately and proceeding that way as ms rico said this is something that i would recommend that we start with and after a week of seeing how it goes with the first group or you know even monday morning we can reassess as all of you know the coop is something that we can change as we need to we need a final approval and that's fro because of the trust we didn't think originally that we needed approval for the group or the mitigation plan but further trust for the insurance purposes the board does have to have approval so that's kind of the one controversial we have parents that go both ways
on it i totally understand that um but you know we also have to follow we live in the county of pima so it's important for us to to follow those procedures thank you so much yes thank you very much appreciate it uh superintendent evaluation instrument okay i'll entertain a motion to approve this superintendent evaluation formula to approve the new superintendent evaluation industry second question in a second any discussion [Music] return of employees from school closure for a loan entertainment discussion [Music] happy to say new board policies advisory 677 to 678. i have some vca aca the sexual harassment regulations are title nine regulation yes and on this side um asda is not recommending a second read they were recommending that we approve it this first initial round and there was a presentation on title nine
at the law conference um looking at designating and training a title ix coordinator will be me um looking at um training all the employees as the recording requirements of title one sexual harassment the teachers did take a course for through pre-service day on what's our the online school safe schools in order to and they have to pass the assessment on sexual harassment um but of course and there is the steps of the people who would take care of title ix it would be me as the coordinator who is also as hr as the one who would compile the investigation it would be mrs cuevas who would um attend if there's an appeal to the decision through hr and if someone were appealing the decision um here we would move it to contact somebody than one
of their counselors as a neutral party to um to be the final person in that decision so um looking looking at the policy i really didn't see um we were looking at something else that was different that was added and again it's more of the equity and civil rights piece and freedom of speech harassment regulations to make sure it's on there yeah thank you further questions anyone online questions are being on the phone um did you mention that you could go to the security for mitigation no no we would we would go to we would we would go to salvador school district in terms of um getting their their counselor involved if it does go to the fourth the second appeal process okay this is title nine that's final step right title nine yes ma'am
and we usually in these cases do involve our attorneys anyway in terms of this is what's going on this is what we're gonna do because we also run the scenario through them as well as needed so our attorney this is a change in the law which was implemented and so the title ix procedure is a more of a mitigation and resolution right yes that is correct thank you thank you thank you um i i bring this to your attention to this evening um just to kind of get some board feedback on this particular policy um before i really get into the policy and the parts i'd like the board to consider for change i just wanted to talk real quick about what the current procurement levels are as far as the state is concerned currently
anything that the district purchases under the 10 000 threshold the superintendent just has the blanket permission to go ahead and make that purchase anything between ten thousand and fifty thousand dollars it requires oral quotes that are annotated you know so we actually have to write down who we got the quote from how much what was date and time that way we can prove that we actually got the oral quote anything between fifty thousand dollars and a hundred thousand dollars requires written forms anything over a hundred thousand dollars that we used to purchase requires a sealed competitive bid so with that being said the current policy states that um any purchases of uh less than ten thousand dollars may be made at the discretion of the superintendent such procurements are not subject to competitive purchasing requirements
however reasonable judgment should be used to ensure the purchases are advantageous to the district so i am proposing and i'm hoping that board would take this up as a possible thing to take it to a first reading the proposing to change that third paragraph to purchases greater than fifty thousand dollars may be made at the discretion of the superintendent as long as oral quotes have been given for any purchase over ten thousand dollars purchases that fall in between this range must be made with notated oral quotes the superintendent should ensure that all purchases made by the district are advantageous to the district as well as in keeping the stewardship of taxpayer funding so i bring this to your attention for a couple of reasons part of the my position that i feel is an extremely
important one is one that i go out and i build relationships and i build these relationships with the vendors more particularly bus vendors and cars car lots you know like mr click and his his best empire of dealerships and in making these relationships i would occasionally get a phone call saying hey i have a van i can sell it to you for twelve thousand dollars or i could get a phone call from canyon state buses saying hey we just got a brand new bed bus in they can't they're not gonna take delivery on it i can sell it to you for 40 000 so i am asking for some some some leniency in order to make those types of purchases without having to tell them tell the vendor i've got to take it to my
board and get them to improvement before i can go ahead and make this purchase and with the size of continental i don't see us making purchases over that ten thousand dollar threshold anyway unless it actually is the vehicle other things that would fall into the category over ten thousand dollars could be something like um a new refrigeration unit in the cafeteria um anything mechanical such as the hvac systems is going to be done through the school facility support which we talked about at the last broadcast so i can't see any single item purchased over 10 000 other than a vehicle so i am i bring this to you guys for your discussion and in your possible approval to move this to a first reading questions anybody on the phone have any questions no thank you
nope i'm good good i'm good thank you okay thank you okay veil and continental intergovernmental agreement beyond textbooks so again this is um just our continuation our tenth year of working with vail in terms of beyond textbooks which is our scope and sequence of standards that are taught in all content areas they also we did take advantage of their professional development that they offer that is very good and very inexpensive and cost-effective for our district we have a good working relationship with them in terms of dms comes from beyond textbooks and we are incorporating our guard teach and enrich our pre-teach and enrich for math this year as well under beyond 10 years yes roxanna from my own notification can you describe again what beyond textbooks is so it's a it's a pacing calendar curriculum
calendar for the year that paces and aligns your curriculum for reading math science social studies but it's developed by bail school district so they've taken a lot of rural schools under their wing in terms of since we don't have a large curriculum department who could actually align all the standards and pace them out for the year we send them our calendar and they align the standards based on our start date and end date for us thank you what's the cost is there a cost to that yes and we pay is it on this money it's very inexpensive for what we get for them um for what they provide it's per student the way we're here okay further discussion questions anybody on the phone mrs thank you we have a memorandum of understanding between united community
health center and continental for covent testing so again like we sent the email and um it was a great suggestion um by miss kais in terms of if we have things that have to be put on the agenda after the fact that we would send the email to board members saying if there's no objection expect to see this this was not one of them because we received the mou on friday and we were not anticipating that they would be able to come as early as today to test our teachers so um to screen our staff so it's the mou that they will require in order to come to our site i was just surprised at the low turnout well folks being and i also clarified it was short notice because they didn't notice that notifies
them till friday that they were going to be able to be here today um so we did send emails out on friday and during the weekend and reminder today i think a lot of staff members also if you don't have symptoms people are saying don't get tested so that's kind of a misconception because this was a screener just to see so i think um a lot of people have been tested already outside and in other for different reasons so again there's some staff who wanted to be tested but have medical things coming up and so their doctors told them not to be tested because they have to be tested prior to that medical closer to them it's stuff and closer to the window and if you've already been tested then that can mess up your
test and so mess it up is that they won't they won't test within a certain amount of days and so there's a lot of different reasons that we kind of were given for but that we went to they're willing to come back so we will be setting up a different date um so this was free they did it for free for us today did you say and are there hoping that the rapid test should be coming up will be ready any questions on the phone comments uh mr aniano hi [Music] yes motion passes thank you okay board school events and we'll see how our virtual book fair goes september 21st october 4th because we get a lot of points that we use to order things in our library from our book fairs so and teachers
get discounts and new teachers get to order books as well so what's the plan for sports so sports we are looking at moving them to second semester and shortening up the length of the time of the support mercy of the southern valley league at each school who participates as an athletic director so we represented one vote out of i believe it's eight and so we have a meeting coming up next week we met about a month and a half ago and it was decided to postpone for first quarter but then try to run accelerated seasons so take an eight week season and get it down to like four so short amount of days shorten the amount of days prior to the first games and then instead of playing two games a week possibly playing three
games a week and then host tournaments on saturdays to kind of accelerate this season if you will so that we can still get them all in it's the news we're getting back from other districts right now some districts aren't willing to even entertain it until after um january one and so there's we'll see what that looks like we've talked about possibly intramurals if it goes that way in the districts who do want to compete that it wouldn't be part of the league but we could make an arrangement with like for example sarita which are neighbors and just kind of keep it in our neighborhood since our kids do go to their school and so that's all still up for for debate because i got an email today or yesterday from sorry that their contact with
coach that they're going back correct so the aia has come out with a statement they have a plan to move forward for basically all sports we are not held to the aia we're held to the southern valley league as we're not part of high school athletics and so all of the athletic directors respect the aia which is the high school athletic association but at the same time we kind of use them as a reference for a lot of the rules in all of our sports in a regular year so we do reference that but we also look at the importance and safety of our kiddos as well and so our league is not as a competitive league as high school is it's more for development of young well-rounded individuals focusing on academics and so right
now our our biggest concern is how can we talk about sports when none of us are in school and so we've kind of decided let's get in school and serena and us we're going back the other districts are not going back as aggressively as we are and so we'll have to look at that but like i said if that happens and there's a split vote then we do have the ability to look at intramurals amongst just neighboring school districts and so that has been discussed and as that information comes up we will be sure to give it to the board but right now there's there's no decision except to wait until at least after the end of first quarter i have something to add to the events uh mr ferguson mr merzian will be performing
at the large part of your highlands tomorrow september 15th 6 to 7 p.m great music and um okay and we also wanted to share um do you want to share i can share um at the last meeting i have talked about the sfp projects that we're trying to go ahead and get going i talked with our rep this afternoon and looks like we're going to go ahead and get those funded and the documents to move forward on those two projects should be coming in tomorrow so that's you know 7 500 worth of district money that we're not going to have to spend on those two projects we're still working on getting quotes for the 20-ton hvac units on the middle school we need to replace two of those so once we get our three quotes
and send those into the sfp we can get that project moving forward as well so i just wanted to go ahead and give you that sfd update there's rumor too that the stage is in dire repair i am working with the sfb to make sure that it's something that they will actually replace thank you appreciate it okay before we do governing board information we need to have a meeting we need to schedule a meeting monday september 21st so we need an executive session and then come into a short special meeting so if you can let us know in time that's good for everybody please it's five five o'clock work for anybody on the phone five o'clock in the uh okay information board members uh miss cash you're up well thanks and um for 11 hours
[Music] uh okay gentlemen i just want to commend everybody for getting school got going this week from the planning the coupe to getting the testing done today to the whole nine yards congratulations and let's uh keep the faith and everything crossed and you know couldn't agree more make it happen thank you sorry like the echo steve it is we're going to take a little risk here to get our kids back in the classroom we're ahead of some of the other schools and doing this and i think our kids are going to benefit uh from that start date um i also attended the conference i gained a new appreciation of what our students are going through in online education after spending a lot 11 hours in front of the screen i just want to mention one
of the breakout sessions that i thought was absolutely fabulous and it had to do with digital citizenship and i i have to say that i no longer have kids in school and teenagers that are struggling with what's going on with social media today and especially as a parent trying to guide them i thought this particular session was was very very informative about the risks that our kids have when they get on social media and the dangers that are involved in that katie mcpherson is the individual that ran that seminar she's brilliant i'd love to have her come here and give our parents and our uh our staff some guidance on on this um there are there were a couple of websites that she provided that can give parents some ideas on how they can protect
their kids which i thought was excellent she had mentioned one thing she got questions from parents about you know at what age should you give your child a smartphone and i'm sure that that's a typical question that because the kids are putting pressure on their parents to get them and her answer to that was when you're ready to give your kid a serious talk about pornography because it is all over the net in everything that they're going to touch so you better be prepared to chat with them about that before you want to put a smartphone in their hands and so i just thought it was great i think it's something that that we should consider in in giving our parents and our staff on some guidance on how we can protect our kids good
thank you and i know um i did mention that session to mr money on this today so it's something that we'll go through as a team we do offer offer digital citizenship to our students as we alluded to before but i think it's a great idea to have someone else come in and talk to our students and our teachers to give a little professional development as well i also wanted to say and discuss the enrollment of school when you look at the plan for hybrid model again our teachers our kids are super lucky that we do have lower class sizes where we don't have to do a hybrid model because in other districts kids are going twice a week to school and we are going to be able to bring our kids in and even
our classrooms the fact that they are built to fit 23 and 24 students in the classroom because in a lot of schools older schools that's not the case because the square footage in the classroom is smaller so again i just want to reiterate when we say that we value smaller class sizes and we do keep our numbers low and that that it's a good thing and we've worked hard to get our students one-to-one and we've worked hard to keep our numbers um at a reasonable number so i really think that it is a blessing for all of us right now that we will that we are able to start and each and every one of you worked very hard to make this happen so my hat's off to you thank you i know it hasn't
been easy but we have to take the next step and we'll move forward slowly and cautiously and we'll get this done so thank you very much anything else thank you yes
