we wanted to kick off our school Europe fertility rally and just keep everybody motivated in it and just show our appreciation for all that you do and all you will continue to do for the rest of the semester and we're all ready I want to thank mr. Osmond because this was his idea way back in September he said that's not something for the new year as a kickoff where our staff to keep everybody motivated but first up we're going to have our very own cheerleaders here from continental you're gonna hear me say Continental School District do [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] here's the trivia what do you know about the Continental solution so 1922 Queen Wilhemina purchased the Continental farm from the Intercontinental Rubber Company and rented the fields

to cotton farmers until 1949 what country was [Music] [Applause] [Laughter] [Music] Germany plans for the area who was the president of the United States who asked mr. Trinity and mr. stone to establish the company along with mr. Morgan Nelson [Music] I thought it was going to be an actor and he realized maybe I'll try TV after graduation he worked at various stations across the country it's also Miami and then he was contacted by a station in Tucson he was a news anchor at - City of Tucson for 30 40 years one of the multiple awards he's now retired enjoying his passion of photography Yoga his grandchildren [Music] so I retired just about almost a year ago and for the first six months I slept all day long after that I figured you know maybe I

better do something and so I I was listening to the radio listening to KGB Y and said hmm that sounds like my kind of music so I asked them if they had an opening and Here I am I'm on noon to three Monday through Friday on KGB wide 1080 am 100.7 FM teamwork that's the subject they wanted me to speak about I'm not a professional when it comes to teamwork but I have served on several news teams over the last 50 years so this morning I got up and thought about what are some of the lessons that might you might learn from in the TV business because I'm sure some of what happens in TV might happen or be paralleled in the education world have you ever watched a TV newscast and you're wondering what

and the world is going on because it's crashing and burning well it happens quite a number of times and a couple of things could be at work one person may be having a bad day that's all it takes if you've got 50 people working on a newscast and you know you've got the anchors reporters the photographer's the directors the producers and if somebody doesn't get something right and if communication is is not tip-top things can go down the tubes very quickly and sometimes it does so my first tip for you today as far as T Burgos is to bring your a-game to work everyday we had when I worked at channel 8 in Tulsa an older weatherman Don woods he was getting almost to the point where he was going to retire and he would

be standing just about 10 feet away doing his weathercast and Bob Howard the anchor would be just right over here with the camera right in front of him and Don one night finished his weather it said back to you Bob and Bob starts talking and Don just walked right in front of the camera seemingly not knowing what he had done and he really didn't know what he had done and everybody's thinking well that's dawn and so a couple of nights later it happens again you know just walk across oblivious to whatever is happening and after the third night the news director finally had a little talk with him and they actually placed guards as in the camera people and thoughts of the of the TV cameras so that Don wouldn't be able to walk through

here's another tip hire smart people probably the most embarrassing mistake I ever made on the air I was supposed to say now more than ever before farmers made a good crop and I said they needed a big crack you know mischievous producers they can they are the bane of anchor people and one night there was a producer at tío TV in Tulsa and he just decided he was going to write the man's name twice just to see if he would read it and that evening at the head of the 10 o'clock news he came on and say good evening I'm bill pick talk good evening I'm Milton cotton so play to your strengths put people in the jobs where they belong where they can do their best job and be most creative dr. Lawrence J

Peter put it this way and it became known as the Peter Principle in a hierarchy individuals tend to rise to the level of their incompetence but you know what sometimes people realize that they don't want to take that next step and that was the case of a reporter we had at channel 9 James Madison who the news director looked at one day and said you're gonna anchor the noon newscast because we need you everybody's out and James said I don't really think I'm the man for the job yes you've got to do it so he went on the air and bottom line was it was it was tough to watch and the mistake and he made many of them that day the one I remember most was that he was supposed to say Fort Huachuca

and he called at Fort Huachuca NTV we have interned sometimes they come from the high schools or they might come from the colleges and there you know they'll just show up one day and everybody's you just figure okay that person is an intern they're quiet they're nervous they stand but sometimes they're pressed into service and we need needed teleprompter operator one night so you know the the teleprompter that thing that supposedly makes us look look a little bit more intelligent than what we are and they hold one young lady and said you need to run the teleprompter she just walked back sat down in front of it and we started the newscast and Stella and I after a couple of minutes were looking at each other and thinking what's going on here because the prompter

is not keeping up with us and after the newscast we found out why the young lady who was running the teleprompter did not speak English fix the little things before they become big you may have seen me one night a couple of years ago they had a wildfire in Bisbee and we didn't have a reporter to go there so I told the producer listen Stella can anchor the news and I'll I'll go down and report fooders beep so we got on the road I got there just about seven minutes before the 10:00 o'clock newscast and got set up just in time for Stella to say here's guy reporting about the fire as I said Thank You Stella and I got just a few words out before I heard a thud by my feet and I

thought what is that I guess I better look and see and the microphone had fallen apart which meant that nobody at home could hear me and come to find out everybody knew about that microphone being bad all all of the reporters who went out each day they knew about it so they could hold it but you let the old anchorman get out there not knowing and it fell apart so fix the little things before they become big things smell check I just tossed that in because I'm a grammar fanatic and I mean I could list a hundred examples of misspellings on the air but one of the worst was during a sports cast it was about Pittsburgh the Pittsburgh team and they had misspelled @p ISS we heard we heard from Steelers fans don't be

stupid because if something bad can happen it will I'll relate to you the most notorious incident and the history of Tulsa TV news Tulsa being where I'm from and this is decades ago when there was a show on called Mannix Mannix and Matt Krieger was the sportscaster for the ten o'clock news well-known well-respected and he had gotten his sports cast done and he walked down to the control room and pressed a button so he could see Mannix but the last part of it in the studio he sat down in a nice easy chair out there and and was watching Mannix and then the director came in a couple of minutes later they said okay get it get a shot of Mack and and then he pressed a button not knowing that Mack had pressed another

button and that button was live on air so he pressed it when he did Mack is out there and he sees disappears and there's Mack and he thinks he's online in studio only and he lifts a finger to the camera and he held it there for about five seconds and then the director looks and realizes the that's on that's going on air goes to black and back to Mannix but the damage had been done and the it was about three minutes later the receptionist at the front desk ran in saying what happened people people are saying that Mack made an obscene gesture toward them and you've got to be careful sometimes sometimes things just happen it's your day your number has been called and you are not going to look too good and it's not

your fault a couple of years ago 13 they had a reporter on 4th Avenue standing there delivering a one-minute report and of course fourth Avenue the people are little crazy there and and a person walks behind and decides sees that she's on camera and just decides to take down her pants and moon the camera so so the reporter is just continuing to speak as the moon is rising over his left shoulder a number of years ago WFAA and Dallas sent a female reporter to Amarillo and and she was to do a live report on a approaching winter storm and it was already cold and they make you stand in front of the camera on your location so that they know that you're out but they know that they can't come to you at the top

of the newscast so this young lady has been out there probably for about at least 15 minutes maybe 30 and the wind I don't know whether you've ever been through in a real all but it's flat and when they've got a wind blowing it is strong and when it's cold it is super cold and she's standing it out there waiting to go on and finally they said now let's go to Cathy out and amarela to tell us about that story actually far from talkative not good the car the the wind had frozen not only her body and her head but also her lips she curtain box she could not she went for a whole minute back to you and the cut back to a shot of the anchors and they couldn't talk they because they

were doubled over so they went to a break after that one more story Bob Dozier some of you might remember him from CNN he was on CNN a number of years ago bo for CNN he was on channel 6 in Tulsa with the guy named Clayton Vaughn and it was Clayton and Bob doing the news : and Bob starts off reading a segment and and Clayton looking at the scripts realizes it's going to be a couple of minutes for he's back on so he leans back in his chair and and just closes his eyes to take a short nap I've done that before so he's leaning back taking his short little nap his eyes are closed he looks like he's asleep and I don't know whether the did it on purpose or whether it was

by accident but while bob was reading they took the picture on the screen of clayton sleeping and Bob all of a sudden notices out the corner design looks over at the monitor and sees Clayton sleeping and and it strikes him his funny so he starts to laugh and when he laughs he snorts and Bob had had a bad cold and mucus with everyone and he still had another 30 seconds to read so he's thinking what do I do no Kleenex no nothing and he just and the mucus crisper so I'm gonna leave you with that mental picture all right we're gonna try a little more trivia thank you guys thank you very much southern Arizona was a mecca and Silius for western films bringing many starts to the area as vacation spots and movie locations

during 1939 the bull farm which is a present-day coil Creek was one such location for a Gary Cooper movie why how is the name of the movie film there by noon there is a corn seeing in it where they're burning the cornfields and that was filmed in that particular location [Music] all right hold the westerner all right here's our next one camp Occidental was not a place before fun and games during World War two but a prisoner of war camp which housed 250 inmates and 40 guards and was established by the United States Army these prisoners worked the cotton fields and provided row maintenance one of Continentals teachers supervising group of prisoners during his summer vacation what nationality were the POWs [Music] but I don't know [Music] so our next presenter is a native to

Sonia graduated from AFI and 92 began coaching and then graduated from U of A began teaching elementary school in Tucson later obtained his master's in a new afternoon a you became the assistant director of a Native American charter school and helped them grow their scores exponentially he's travelled full circle to teach sixth grade in Tucson and he filed his passion of public education and was elected to the Pima County Superintendent of Schools so we're proud to welcome mr. Dustin Williams [Music] [Applause] [Music] the sodium crossing guards both work out tuturro parapro nervous little bit of Education how's that pounding beat in your heart the most important person in society say it one more time you are single-handedly the most important person you watch whether you know whatever you don't know that you're being watched and

not just one is being watched by many and it's a powerful powerful thing to realize that you are the creator and the changer see where that child is going to fail that person and that's a guarantee in life there's no other person that's gonna be able to help this child right now you don't know whether the time that's going to be I can promise you you won't know when it will happen because quite honestly the might have already happened and then quite honestly if I already right now that you're thinking yeah I know for darn sure working with this student every day talking to them over and over and over I know I've changed their life we never reap the rewards right away we don't know what really goes on later on in life what

are the impacts we really never sometimes hear the story down the road it becomes a growing trend they see you here the students today and how they feel and the way of the past is gone it's changing and we adapt and that's the challenge that you have I challenge myself outside of the box have I got together with so completely different in the organization and said I wasn't a little bit more by your job this story is this boring to me [Music] let's start writing them down start testing yourself every single day when you wake up and save yourself where does that new student that has watched me that I do that watching because believe me they're watching you they they come to school every day looking for some piece of motivation that's going to

change their life so you have to be the life changer and you have to find that Dustin what do you like seeing your students been asking to donate all these supply that really wait what we're going into a look at this whole thing the most important profession in the world perfect example the board member showed up in 2017 had an idea you had this wacky idea of wanting to be a board member I looked at her I said you understand that you work tirelessly there's tons of hours yeah you understand that Reuven interview process oh yeah I got that I got that we'll see the boat it's gonna work out it's cutting up lo behold here we are standing again with a vision that this gentleman and to over 180 schools I've been all over

the state and I don't see [Music] [Laughter] are you funny I was at a conference couple weeks ago of Arizona School Board Association and super Jenna Rico comes up and she picked us and I got [Music] [Laughter] most importantly the message that I really wanted to drive home is don't wait don't wait even another day when you go home tonight some of you might do this I challenge every single one of you when you go home tonight regardless of what's going on I know that's hard a minute or two for yourself reflect on this entire day from when you woke up to the craziness from I drove up and saw the bus lines okay to the unbelievable dance moment and reflect on it and say to yourself what's one way that I'm going to challenge

myself and then work with somebody in my in my peers all too often we can't take the paper to the pencil and if you can't just turn it on one of these or data because there's going to be about 615 eyes watching you to make them the most successful person that they can possibly ever beat in their life you're going to be the number one best profession in the world hands down the most critical not great ideas got a nice haircut they're shiny the beating inside for one more day don't ever let it not shine take yourself out what something's going on and they're like what are you doing [Music] Thank You Dustin we reassured me that he would not disappoint me because he said well I can tell my story I said well what

is your story I ought to be sure that you'll be able to do this so thank you you did not disappoint and please have some food stick around and we have a meeting on Thursday so I'll see you Thursday morning so again let's give it up for destiny okay hey MC oh we have another trivia [Music] later on we got so our next speaker was born in the Midwest moved a lot around in his childhood went to two middle schools three high schools while playing trying to play football the track graduated in 1980 and then graduated from small College in Pennsylvania which back then before was called Indiana Teachers College but at the time it was called Vienna University of Pennsylvania you obtain a degree in computer science accounting and keg tapping moved to DC

area as a programmer and then moved into software sales and settling in a nice little town in Green Valley and runs a mortgage company is CrossFit gym golf amongst other things it's very proud of his to honor roll students and fourth grade and seventh grade here at Continental if you haven't guessed by now is your foundation member your board member and your pack and your biggest fan me I went out from the foundation mr. McGarry is here to have your attention on the foundation we're having our sweetheart Galya most of you have been invited that is February the 9th okay it starts at 5:30 so please sign up for that when you can so from the board we just want you guys to know that we believe in you we believe in the school and

I have titled her that Continental is special because it honestly is I went to a bunch of schools as a kid and talk to other parents and we go to these meetings in Phoenix and whatnot and what we have is so unique from the leadership that we have to the teachers to our dedicated bus folks you name it it really is special as you know Mary just said we have we're on a campus 38 acres I didn't know that so we've got some space here we've got roughly 600 students give or take 95 staff and bunch of volunteers 60 plus what schools have you know 60 teachers to a 600 kids school so as you know we got our a rating this year [Music] some bullet points you know some stuff that we don't do

like other schools you know who does an eighth grade DC trip how many years is that been going on that doesn't happen the Flagstaff trip the music folks are taking the kids to Disneyland at the end of the year for some music education experience if you will I mean that stuff is is really unique our class size as you know is 25 or less in our first grade this year we're under 20 its fluctuates 16 17 18 and we've got as you know three roughly three teachers per class you want most teachers what most districts would have done to that classroom we would have combined that to two and eliminate that spot worried about next year so that's not how we roll here continental alright we've got a team here and the team here is

really is to we need to go to the next level we need to be not only an A+ good but when I moved here I knew I wanted to move in the district because the things that I had heard about continental and we still hear those things but we've got such an opportunity to take this ship you know it's really hard to turn an aircraft carrier but a smaller boat with smarter drivers can really move right so we can really move this school our kids you know I can't say enough they've got to take care of this you know we need that so we don't have the stuff like I grew up in an upper-middle-class school in generally in the Ohio Pennsylvania area and in middle school and even some elementary school you know there

was the smokin & drinkin and druggin back in the late 70s and 80s I mean it we don't see that you know that happens in Tucson in fact I don't know if any of you all read the paper but the second page of the Green Valley news today it talks about discipline and Sarita their suspension in school and out of school you know their likes Sarita middle school with last two years they've had 109 out-of-school suspensions I mean ours are miniscule compared to that and you know they're a little bit bigger just that middle school but not a heck of a lot so you know we've got some really good kids here a great environment you know I mean me we're kind of in a bubble but that's okay because we can make it happen

so couple other things we the board has a couple retreats we go to a nice dessert a nice island in the tropics every year but on the board and I believe some of the teachers we talked about there's just a couple quick bullet points that I just want to run by what would our Continentals assets alright you know we've got this beautiful brand new school how old is it now since it five years give or take you know our staff that the resources that we have available some of you have come here from other schools and I've heard from you that you asked for something for your classroom and you get it and that's not doing a grant through the foundation that is just go out of the closet and get it or we will

order it for you you know our volunteers the music programs that has developed over the last couple years that's all that doesn't happen talk to your peers in other schools our parents support the amount of money that we get from the community and our tax credit it's lady can vouch it's it's up there it's a nice super nice number that helps our clubs and after-school activities what are some of our challenges just real briefly you know just to meet the needs of all our students it's a very diverse group you know some of them have been here since preschool kindergarten etc some are very transited because their apparent professions so it's it's tough some of the special education needs we've got a kind of an influx this year from what I understand the growth some

of the turnover so we're starting to build consistency you know we've got growth I know if anybody knows Madera Highlands is adding four hundred houses in the next four years so here it comes again so we got to be ready for that we have some capacity now and putting in a plan for what's going to have it down the river again what are some of the most important things that we need to accomplish right teaching children it's that easy student achievement life skills character skills unfortunately a lot of our kids aren't getting that at home so they look to us just like Dustin said no you're gonna make a change in one to twenty hundred kids lives what are some of those some barriers that we have addressing all the needs of all the students

it's tough one of the other things that came up was improved writing reading improved computer-based learning we're also looking at some advanced classes you know let's learn from some other top tier schools where there there are charter schools are public schools so honestly this is um this is from my heart and we can really take continental up to the next level we can do it now we don't have to wait for funding from the state because we know that drill so we'll use the money we have wisely and let's take this school to where we need to so we can't do with you so I always wanted to do this can I get a cult [Music] we're getting close to the grand finale right so our next feature speaker some of you may know our

next speaker is a native to Sounion again graduated in Tucson in 1985 attended Northerners University receiving a bachelor's degree in elementary education later a master's degree in educational leadership she began her career in education teaching special ed and bilingual education as a leader she has served as elementary and middle school principal and later became the district's Gatorade curriculum director she also serves as an executive member board members of the Latino administrator and superintendent serving as their secretary she values Family Education and is very proud of her Hispanic culture she believes in service to others and has been her entire career serving students families and the community in southern Arizona she's a proud mother of three adult children has a 16 month-old grandmother her hobbies include riding horses and ropey hiking biking spending time with family

and friends however a fun fact that some of you may not know is back in the day she was known all over southern Arizona as tansy the clown so join us since 19th of 2017 Roxanna Rico that was so weird Steve kept saying send me your BIOS then nearby on like who did he introduce me to they know me he's like just thank you to here I'm gonna make something up so I had to send it to him but yes I was tagging the cloud in my former life and I did birthday parties and sculptures and face painting and steven steve' nathan is dying for me to come out of retirement to bring out my costume my oldest daughter does not like clowns because that was when she was little that she would transform into

Tammy the clown but it's a lot of fun when you can be silly and do things that people don't even know who you are and you'd be surprised how many people do not know how to run a birthday party I mean they'll pay lots of money for you to run a pinata and play musical chairs and entertain their children so anyway Steve thanks for sharing that so first of all can anybody recite our vision statement and these are four big prices and you can't look it up I just want to know does anybody have any idea what our vision statement is because we have some gift cards to all its anybody know what our vision statement is if you got it raise your hand can't be married no one anybody any idea I want to

take a stab at it go home okay our vision statement building for the future first thing is let's start giving out money cooperating and carrying okay building for the future learning cooperating and caring so we have to be able to do our vision statement and repeat it to our kids into ourselves write that little mantra in our head so also our mission statement we talked about it but we also have to work hard to keep our mission statement alive Continental school districts will provide a community environment in which all individuals are challenged to achieve excellence and academics character and life skills and I think you know Dustin just spoke about that we have the most important job in the world because we not only have to teach our kids but we are building their character

and we were working on life skills that they're gonna need for the future so that just keep that in mind and we'll continue to have a conscious maybe in our next meeting if you can recite it will give olives sir gift card certificates that Steve was able to get for us so again talking about our strategic plan priorities and goals what are our priorities we have to know them and I say if this isn't what we think about every single day and if you are teaching a lesson and you're not prioritizing learning and achievement and you're not prioritizing relevant and high-quality comprehensive curriculum safe healthy and nurturing learning environment and students staff parents and communities working together it takes the whole entire village from like we said the minute our kids get picked up in

the morning or get dropped off to the time they get home and we were just talking I was talking to miss Fanning and to miss Freeland and talking about teachers were exhausted people in education are exhausted because your mind never rests you're always thinking about your students your lesson what you need to buy at the store I mean I can I don't even go to the store thinking oh my god this would be so great first step for a kids the teachers said she needed this what do we buy so I know we're always doing that we're recycling trying to figure out how are we going to keep our students motivated to continue to keep learning and achievement as a priority and I know that we can you know we can reach that eight plus

award which is really our goal you know to really be able to our board members sometimes say people don't even know that there's a school there well what do you mean because we are a little diamond in the rough out here and it's not rough because we have a beautiful beautiful Medad Lavetta can in there and great sceneries so we're just so fortunate and I just truly want to thank you thank you thank you for all that you do and all of your hard work and all your thinking and all your perseverance on a daily basis so we have a little video here on teamwork hopefully you'll be able to to see it oops Albert can you so again it's on teamwork it's on hold I'm sorry [Music] okay technical difficulty marry you have another

trivia question when they get the sound going thing owes it there okay [Music] honkers Wow again no-hitter okay so here you come I have to tell you with when Mary was in charge of trivia I didn't know she's gonna like make her brains her okay here we go in the video [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Oh [Music] so again we all need help support guidance so don't be afraid to there's another really short video okay Mary another trend yeah well he gets like ranges [Music] all right he can say it a lot better than I can go kid president okay so again how do we do this we're gonna persevere and we're gonna stay the course and we're gonna keep each other uplifted and we know we're not all gonna have perfect days but a

good team sticks together a good key team steps in when someone's not at their best and not at their a-game so that we can all get the results at the end to increase student achievement and to support each other the leadership team had the board we're meeting a book called leaders eat last and it really does talk about you have to run your organization like the family and if and I say it all the time if kids don't know they don't care how much you know until they know how much you care and that's truly like what we're trying to foster here is that so you know that our board myself Mary Steve our perils everybody is here to support teachers teaching and learning and parents so we really really truly appreciate you and we

have one little extra trivia and we're gonna have both the Cole please come out maybe we could get some music for both the cold out here per minute and you're gonna get to guess who both the cold is okay and you can guess who both the pulped is I think we're gonna have three guesses of the wonderful restaurants are his help to make a photo of me in a little bit hey okay let's see let me hold both the cold always get certificate please carry no it's not Larry I'll give you a hint it's one of our staff members it's not Lupita it's not Tonya not Roxy okay where does have built the cold Artie are we gonna reveal both the cold or not no yes we are everybody big round of applause better than

a box for a bathroom okay and so we're trying to make an executive decision here we know that we had technology training planned for 2:15 to 3:00 today we also want to give teachers the gift of time if that's what you prefer to work in your classrooms so we can do the technology rotations another day so you can have time to be in your rooms and get organized so should we take the bowl committee so we're going to do the survey right now [Music] okay but before you do that what I'd like to do before you go psyche we are going to give you the gift of time and Eric Rose will have you come again when we do the technology training at a later date I know we're looking at the February 13th date

because we had a cancellation of the speakers so we may use it to rework it on that day but before you do the survey I would like all of you we're gonna go around the room and remember when we did the activity of who we stand for I want you to all think of a student that you it could be your own personal child a grandchild a school student but why do we do what we do every day what I'd like for you to do is everybody can stand up and when you say who you stand for you can quit stay seated and we'll have you stand okay so let's start with miss Steinem will you start for us please and just tell us who you stand for no you're just gonna say a name

I will say I can start I stand for Jessie roses bed is the belt and Jennifer who are students that passed away when I was principal at some abuse so I stopped for those four kids and you don't have to say that's names if you just stand and say your first name Fred and stay standing Wendy please [Music]
