Sorry. All right. Uh, this is a call to order for the governing board advisory committee to review policies. It's May 12th, 2025. And, um, welcome. So, um, can I get a a motion to approve the agenda? Can I get a second? A motion we approve the agenda as is. All those in favor say I. We had a second. I uh motion passes. Do you mind being a second? Sure. Second on it. Okay. What's the matter? A first, a second, and then everybody. Oh, I was the first though. Oh, you were? I said I motion. Okay. And then you were the second. Um, okay. Uh, moving on. Call to the audience. Is there anything from the Okay. All right. And then the next agenda item is the discussion on the policies. Uh the last meeting was
uh we didn't have a quorum for it. Um and before that we were working on the different slides and uh stuff for the uh governing board presentation and uh we did a little bit of work on a couple of different policies. Uh the the primary goal for today is to try to finalize everything that we've worked on this year to go towards the attorney for um approval and review. So um my understanding is that uh we're at the we're basing this off of the policies that we've done so far that were primarily in the presentation JIC and all those others. Is that true? Yeah. Okay. Does do we want to start with a particular one or we just want to go in order with like JIC? No. Can I can I can I take the
wheel? Please go right ahead. So, let's can we start first with the JB? If you go into the com policy edits folder and you go to the PDF we have, we just need to make a final decision on if it's appropriate to put as a J I J I A. Um because right now we have it as like a a JB and so we wanted we didn't decide for sure if that was going to end up being like a second part of it. And I don't know if we decide that or if you who who decides that I mean helps if you turn the mic on. Um I think the committee can certainly make a recommendation and that would be welcome because there really I mean there's sort of a standard but as you can
see that standard isn't always viable because the standard recommended JB which is already an existing policy. So, um, so if there's a place that the team feels like it lives in and amongst the other policies, it would make sense. Like it's I think it's helpful and healthy if they're sort of clustered together in a way where the things that you would kind of go to together or live together if that makes sense. Just to make it easier when you're trying to do something to find what you're looking for. Got it. Okay. So then I think the team needs to decide on a recommendation and the first thought was we put it under student rights and responsibilities. So it would be like I guess a secondary addendum to that. J I- A um there's no Oh,
so we just R not a regist but you can have letter. So if there's not an existing you can make a JA. Okay. So that would be how you would you would add another letter and pursue like extend the listing. If you wanted it under JD because you don't if you wanted it under JD because it's related to JD then you would if there isn't an existing JDA you'd make it JDA. Okay. I don't know. Let me check then. Um or we like give it its own separate thing. So, do we want to tie it to their rights and responsibilities and find the most appropriate letter for that? How does the team feel? And then the con would be you'd have to remember if you're looking up student rights that it is like that students
like with like national origin concerns, their information would be on that, right? Like it be like, "Oh, there's an immigration issue here. I know that that's their rights. So, it's going to be under JII as opposed to giving it its own separate special code and I got no skin in this game. So, it makes no sense to you guys. I mean, it I don't know that it fits anywhere else. I could Yeah, like I could see it falling under the student rates. I don't doesn't matter to me really either way, but I could see it fitting there. Okay. Remind me again where was it before? It wasn't anywhere. It's brand new. Oh, is there any reason why it couldn't be its own separate thing or is that just too small to I mean because if
it's something that we want to highlight or not highlight but at least acknowledge that it's um that it's there putting it in a subcategory might bury it even further. True. So is your vote to have it be like a separate code of its own because then I think we we would be a J. This is like double R. So JS I mean ultimately people can just type in the search bar and find things anyway. That's that's how I find most things. Okay. So then in the notes we can put it would be like J S and then is this like a trademark sign the copyright copyright and then the yeah title it it wouldn't carry the since it's our policy that we've drafted it wouldn't carry the ASBA copyright symbol. That's why that's okay. So
then can James, can you put that in the recommendation that we're recommending creating a JS policy for national origins protections? Where would that go? In your notes. Oh, in the notes. Okay. I thought there was like some other thing. Okay. So JBA. No, JBS. No, just JS. Oh, sorry. JS. You wanted something separate. Yeah. So JBA is JBS or JS. Sorry, I keep saying JB. Yeah. Yep. JBA. Okay. So then that one is good to we can send to the um board or to the JS lawyer. Got it. Okay. So then if everybody could go to J I I just J I not J I I R just J I So we just need to clear these few things that are left. So Katie replaced form with exhibit. Um so I think that's fine. [Music]
Um the exhibit name is going to be the same. Um and then the the finals are done except for um the DCS one we're still looking at. And then the um you were there when the APs were uh there's a chance that we might be able to get this um suspension form like populated by Synergy, but I have to meet with Russell. Yeah. to see what the parts are like that they can get on there. So, we're going to go with the Canva built one that mirrored unless we can make it where it works for synergy. Okay. Um yeah, so it'll be hopefully one less thing for everybody. And then Jez put um could it be the form hyperl in the policy to allow for easier access? Do we have hyperlinks in the policy currently
like the ARS and stuff? We do. Yeah. Okay. and other like when where it references other policies, there's a link that takes you to those otheries. Okay. So then I think I'm just going to leave his or their comment here. Um so that way we know that eventually we're going to link it there. And then I talked So if you go down to the bottom of page two, um James, did you talk to people about the current site practices? There was an added pro site practices and add a common practice for making sure staff and students are made aware of the policy so it can be added to the regul I did not. Sorry. Okay. So, the only thing that I know is that everybody does put it in their handbook. So, I think we
can leave it here, but then the APS just need to get together and decide uh how where we're going to put the policy if it's going to be in the front office. Okay. Good with that, everybody? Yeah. Um this was so we just need to see we basically just need to like are you guys okay with the two comments that were added the lastly dependent like at b okay sorry those very last comments we're going to take out um what Katie has complete completely and then we can put um depend on the committed violation and then those two paragraphs I just copied and pasted from other ones but we want to make sure everyone's good with us adding those I remember this so we adding here comments minus where I put from JIC revisions We
probably would just take away the last and just say dependent on the committed violation and or harm caused, the superintendent reserves the right to inform law enforcement in accordance with Arizona revised statutes and governing board policy. And then second paragraph would be local law enforcement shall be notified yada yada. That's fine. Yeah, it's fine. Jez, are you good with us doing that? I don't Yes. Okay. So then I'm going to Cross these all out. Okay. So then this one is done. And then if you guys can go next to J IIR, excuse me. Um, okay. So the first two are just like comments about what we took out and then C there was no there was no figuring out what the APs are using because there really isn't anything that people have been using in
particular for written reports of the findings. Most people are just using we were using the cover sheet. Most people are just using their like notes. So I just think that um we have two options. We can leave in written report and assume that that would need to be work or the investigator shall prepare documentation of the findings and then it encompasses the different practices that we have. Um as long as you have documentation like your witness statements and stuff, we would be fine. Um but I didn't get anywhere with like trying to make like a universal thing for that. Okay. So my vote would just be go ahead and put documentation so that we can get this to them and then documentation can get figured out best with the APS later on. And I'm also
okay with people wanting to be more formalized with like a a written report if that's what we want. Documentation. I think I'd go documentation and then that way it's covered and then we can meet maybe outside of the committee as APS or something to work that out. Yeah. Yeah. Maybe we should have like a list of all the things the APs need to finish. Well, and it Yeah, that I think would be helpful. And it may also be helpful like when the APS get together to figure out what that documentation is to just kind of compare notes on what types of things are typically documentation. And then that way you could have an example list. So that way if someone's a new AP and they're like, it says documentation and I don't know what to
do. Yeah. Okay. Okay. So then this I can Oops, just realized. Okay. So then this we're gonna take out and these can be And then I think that's it. I don't know what I don't know what I meant by change these bullets. I think it's like into the other one. That's just the format I think. So I'll leave it. But yeah. Um good. Good. Okay. So then the next one. Can we go to What about Tim's comment? Tim's comment is the change. Got it. Yeah, it originally said something else. Um there. Hold on. Okay. And then Okay. So then if you go to next. Oops. I just realized I've been putting the wrong thing. Sorry. One second. Okay. Then the next ones are sent for approval. Okay. So, if you can go to JIC. And
then if you look at um page two, top of page two, Katie's comment, there was two paragraphs that we had um that we needed to like kind of combine and figure out what we wanted. And so I gave my best stab at paragraph three. Um, so Jez, if you're looking at it, uh, just for the sake of you being able to see what we're doing, if you could just look at what's now written in blue, middle of page two, and tell us how you feel about that. I'm looking at it right now. Oh, and that shall I was hoping to make a May. I didn't change it on there. The second shall Adriana the first shall in this paragraph law enforcement authorities shall be or may be contacted if the princ when the principal determines
were found in the possession of a student. But then do we have the option or the statute require that we contact I I copied it from what we put previously? Yep. Go ahead. I think that would be my question also. Um is it does that fall under mandatory reporting? Is it a shell or may in the matrix uh that we use uh drug violations are required interestingly enough alcohol and tobacco are um required to be reported to the state but not necessarily not necessarily law enforcement. Yeah, I think that's what we're that what he's saying, Jez, is that we when we put it in synergy, it will flag for the state that the report that they were there, but we determine um based on like the the issues. What's uh her comment about uh delineation
between uh alcohol and drugs? Where are you at? Um it's the comment it's the comments that's associated with that. Uh sheesh I lost it already right above your comment about me where she's saying like the consequence should be for drugs versus alcohol should be separated and on the matrix they're they're the same the consequences anyway you treat the uh the for the matrix the consequences are treated the same I mean obviously with circumstances and records and you know stuff like that but The the range of discipline uh the range of consequences in terms of discipline are exactly the same for alcohol and um drugs. [Music] I think because we felt it was redundant, we were just going to put it into one paragraph was that makes sense to me. I was just more curious about
the second sentence than the first part. One, two, I'm going to do it to your butt. Okay. Sorry, I thought I was on mute, y'all. No, you're I'm gonna get I'm gonna get shot with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle manhole cover if I don't hurry up. You came just in time. We were looking at GIC at your comment. Oh, okay. Hold on. Let me put on my headphones real quick. Hey, Maxi. Not right now, buddy. I mean, I guess at the end of the day, all that matters is that is putting that paragraph together. Okay. All right. We're looking at JIC, you said. Mhm. Okay. Drive. It's like the top of page two. The JIC, not not the R, just the policy. Yeah, just is it where your mouse is at right now, Adriana? Yeah.
So, that to those two highlighted paragraphs. What did my comment say again? I'm sorry. No, it says it feels redundant and then it would be we could word it better. Um, and the consequences for drugs and alcohol should be separated. And so, I just put together the third paragraph below that in blue. But James is asking a question about your comment. What was your concern? Yeah, my question is that the last sentence um the comment about the consequences for drugs versus alcohol should be separated. Yeah, because um why did I say that? Um because I think that is it a Jay? Correct me. I You don't have to call the police if a student is possessing alcohol. Correct. Correct. And and I believe there may be less leeway choice if it's um in drugs. Drug.
Yep. Yeah. So, yeah, I think that's probably what my thinking was is that like the the responsibilities of the school are different for those two things. And like even from that also to like what a you know if a kid got a minor in possession charge for alcohol in general is going to be less punitive than if you're possessing methamphetamines or fentanyl or something like that. So I just wanted us to be clear and not lump everything together I guess is what I wanted to do because I knew that the school responsibilities were going to be different and the and the punishments are different. So would that mean that we would need to change the matrix that we use for for discipline because in terms of consequences the we have a range of items uh
to to uh to use when determining consequences and the range is exactly the same for alcohol and for drugs. Yeah. Yeah, I mean I that you know that's not my I mean I guess as long as we're clear that like the law requires this that you as an administrator notify law enforcement when some when a student is in possession of a dangerous or narcotic drug versus you don't have to call the police if a student is in possession of alcohol. on it. And I would probably as as a board member and as a board would probably, you know, like we've said in this committee before, air on the side of caution in terms of like the least amount of times we have to call the police as possible or involve kids in the justice system
as possible. So that's where really where I'm coming from in terms of what the actual consequences are at the school level. You know, it's not really I don't know if it's my place to insert myself there. Um, it it could be something to consider if you're thinking about like how these things would be handled on the outside of a school system. Do you want to handle them? They're handled differently outside of the school system. And so, do you want to handle them differently or you want to lump them together? But that's not a question for me to answer, you know, through this policy. Yeah. And I would say um if the range encompasses everything from you know a single ounce of alcohol to you know distribution of a dangerous narcotic substance then it may be
able to be universal regardless of what the substance is and the nature of the I'll call it the event would really determine where would it um the the schoolbased response would be but as far as as far as the district's legal requirement to know I mean obviously if we have like a bootleger on campus but it could be a little bit different but I yeah so I think yeah I think that question is not for me to answer I just wanted to make sure everybody's aware that there's different requirements there and so I don't want them to get like muddled together really you feel like that third pair paragraph addresses what your uh intent is with the comment. Hold on. I'm just ruding it now. I think my wonder is um are we going to
be able to separate them if the policies I almost feel like then in that case we would have to do like a J I C H drug J IC H something other. I don't know I don't know how to do the code names but um for just alcohol but they would end up saying the same thing. Yeah. I just didn't want it to say, you know, I just wanted them to I just wanted to un I wanted to make it clear that law enforcement authorities, it doesn't have to say shall be contacted when it comes down to a student possessing alcohol is really the only thing I wanted to make sure was understood through this policy. Okay. because of our shadow. And so I I guess the way that it's written in the beginning when
it's talking when you rewrote and said determines that you know drugs used for non-medical purposes are found in the possession of a student that makes sense. I would just say are we clear that the rest of the paragraph is still just referring to drugs for non student I that's where I was just getting a little bit lost in the so I don't know how to make sure everything's delineated if it's like two different sections or what but I just felt like when I was reading those two above they seem like they're the same seems like they're saying the same thing but they're saying one saying about the law and the other saying about school you know, they're saying the same thing, but one's referring to the law and one's referring to school regulations, which I
mean, it seems pretty common sense, like they're two separate systems, but I understand why we need to explain that. It just feels weird that they basically repeated themselves. What if I did it like this? I put students who are in violation of the provisions of this policy regarding drugs and alcohol shall be subject to disciplinary action and supportive services. Okay. I think that's good before that part that you wrote next. Yeah. And then if we were to do away with the two paragraphs above that and keep everything you have in blue, I think that makes sense to me as long as everybody else is cool with that. You guys could do that. Yeah. I I don't No, I don't have a problem with that. I I I'm still processing the separation between alcohol and and
drugs, but that's not related to this. Yeah, that looks fine. Oh, yeah. The se I mean, yeah. So again, I'm just referring to the separation about what's required by law for you to call the police about. And it's not required by law for you as a school to call the police if a student is possessing alcohol. It is required by law for you to call the police if a student is possessing dangerous or narcotic drugs. Right. Yeah, that makes sense. So then we have in other areas that they may contact, but um do we need to put like narcotics in here? Cuz I think Kitty, you're talking Yeah, I'm just trying to say the the names that I use every day, but the way you're wording it with the non-medical that's the drugs for non-medical
purposes, totally fine. Whatever language that's colloquial and that we can use that we think is more widely understood. I'm just talking because it's the end of the day and that's how I talk at work because my wonder is is I don't think that I don't think that we're calling every time that there is a marijuana thing, but we have called when we have like pills and stuff. So, I'm wondering as you're talking like, oh, should we delineate because marijuana marijuana is illegal for children to have, but it's legal for their parents to have. So, we haven't been calling. No, I think we looked this up before, right, Jay? Yep. Is it still listed? I think it is. Yeah. Says though, like for marijuana, I thought any kind of I think we looked it up and
as long as it was um you couldn't possess it still even for medical purposes on campus. But when it comes down to suspected use is where the gray area comes in because because you could technically have legally used it as home for medical purposes and then someone could suspect you of being under the influence of it at school, but that would be technically okay because you didn't use it or possess it at school is really kind of what I think we remember we came down to. So that's the only place where the gray area exists is about use. That's what I would call my team, but otherwise you shouldn't possess it. And I think you do still have to call the police if somebody's in possession of marijuana. Yes. Um technically marijuana, the leaf is
its own drug. Um classification, it's not a dangerous or narcotic drug under the Arizona state statutes. However, if it's in distillate form in a vape can or something like that, that is a narcotic drug and it's a higher level. It's like an actual felony to possess it. Um, did you say it was felony? Yeah, if you're Well, technically it's like a higher level offense. I don't know if they still char No, it's not a felony for adults to possess it. it I they haven't cleaned up the statutes very clearly, but it's basically a higher level offense because right now it's it's a misdemeanor to possess marijuana underage, right? But it's actually classified differently if it's in a vape pen and so they it may still be a higher level offense. I just haven't dealt with
it in a while because nobody's really getting charged for mar marijuana possession these days and I I'm not going to get juveniles charged with marijuana possession. So there is a distinction under the law and they'll be punished more harshly in the juvenile justice system for possessing vape marijuana vapes than they would for having just regular bug is all I'm trying to explain. But I know you probably have seen both. So I'd say leave it shall and we can yeah you have to send it to the to the school attorney anyway. So feels like it doesn't shall let us know. Oh that's a great yeah point. Sorry if I'm longwinded. Please tell me to stop talking whenever. All right. What's next? J. Can you open up Jr. and then second? Okay. [Music] Um, so this one
we have a lot of just tracked changes. Um, and we already did the sharing versus selling because we were just saying the sale of drugs to match. Um, so the one that we have for that Katie, you have like the principal may also contact law enforcement authorities to help make such a determination. The only the only thing that I can think of is one time we had pills that we couldn't identify like with a Google search. Um, and it just turned out to be like a version of like ibuprofen or something, but we did end up calling the police to come and like confiscate it. So, we have had to do that in the past and we don't know what we're dealing with. Um, and then obviously that kid got a very different punishment than
what we initially thought. Yeah. I would just say just, you know, literally what the police do is go to medicine.com. Like that's literally what they put in their report. So, whatever you're doing, that's what they're doing is all I could say. Take it. You could just take it out then. Um um cuz when they encounter my adult clients with any kind of pill, they're like, I looked at the pill and I looked at the number and I went to medicine.com and I entered it in and this is what came up. So that's how they do it themselves. There's really no way for them to determine what it is unless it gets sent to the lab. Okay. Then I feel like we could just take it out. Yeah. Okay. Agreed. Okay. So then format So um
okay so then the next one so Katie's question on page there are no page numbers on the second page about how do we determine who's um under the influence. So typically at the schools it's like if they're like slurring their words um if they are uh like just misbehaving or behaving like contrary to what they normally do um or like we've had kids who are like actually having a medical emergency because they didn't they didn't take well to the vape pen or whatever they were using. Uh so that's how we've done reasonably suspected um and we do vitals checks but that is just like knowing like their pup that's like checking their pupils and their heart rate and then their like oximter but we don't we don't have like a criminal threshold for that but
it's like oh you did have an elevated heart rate and we thought this and we thought that. Um so that's kind of how that's coming to play at least at Monav Vista and Excalencia. What about you guys? We haven't had any this year. Oh, you guys. Um, I'm very happy to hear that. Um, yeah, we have a similar process. Um the the only thing that uh sometimes we've had uh the only thing I would add to that is sometimes we have conversations with parents and uh the parent will say you know uh what if I go and get a drug test someplace and show you that this is okay. Uh sometimes we've had that be part of the conversation as well too. Interesting. I mean I honestly can't remember why I put that there. Maybe
I was just curious and I think I might have had the same concern about the medical marijuana thing or something is maybe where my mind was at. But now I can't remember because it's been a minute. Do we want to resolve it? Do you want us Should we What should we have more discussion about? Oh, no. No. I'm good. I I'm sorry, but that's very informative. Yeah. Um, okay. So, then these two things that you brought up, uh, we don't have a drug abuse prevention program. Um, and so this is just like outdated. I think this is like from our dare years. I'd like to throw out that drug abuse prevention programs they found statistically do not show that they have like a great um like success rate or impact on it. And so I
would almost just say we take this out um or we put in something that's like the uh like superintendent shall look into because we have like not my kid but they don't do staff trainings. So, um, we it doesn't look like anything now. There is no drug abuse prevention. Correct. Yeah. I mean, as far as I know, I don't think that's required by statute. Correct, Jay? I don't believe it is. Um, you know, obviously it's something Jessica could advise us on if we're wrong and obviously it would be something we would need to correct. We've put a lot of effort in the last several years to trying to bring some partners to bear, which is how, you know, we got partnered up with Not My Kid and and some of the other resources that we
have available to our families. But, um, if that's not adequate, it's something we really need to know so that way we can do something different. But, you know, as much as that dog costume is probably in a costume or is probably, you don't think around for a while. than the you know I think if I had put anything there I'd more so been interested in like you know community and um like parent and family education in terms of like I think a lot of times some of the issues rise there where where parents or family don't recognize or understand some of those things and so any role we can play in that might be helpful I I agree we should leave the language to be general and broad so that it can evolve with the
times in whatever way that works. I would say the last few years we've made sure at least one community council had that as a topic. Um this year I think with all of the other things that we were trying to focus on because I know end of last year we had not my kid but have we had them this year? Not my kid was this year too. I think it was at Loma. That's right. Okay. Oh, just when I feel like a failure, you pull you pull me up. I got you. I got you. Yeah. So, yeah. So, I think typically annually we bring some partner or another. The last two years, it's been not my kid. Prior to that, it's been um some other entities to be able to engage with families um through
that community council process. We could we could look at ways to extend it beyond there. And I think some of our schools have brought them into some of their cafesitos. Um but I don't think it's been um universal. Yeah. And when I I mean honestly the way this is worded when I first read it I was like oh is this drug abuse among like the adults and the staff because it says staff education and I thought when I started reading I was like this is for drug abuse with staff. And then afterwards I that second paragraph I was thinking that that was more towards parents and students. And then it took me a little while to kind of make connect those two. So, well, I think there's also room there aside from family and parents
to I think not every teacher, staff or admin are in the know about these things too as drugs evolve and so making sure we have that possibility still open there to Yeah. Yeah. We had this conversation, I believe, in the AP meeting where we were talking about uh staff that uh that use vapes, not marijuana ones, but tobacco ones. And in terms of how uh you know, where is it supposed to be? Is it supposed to be as is it allowed to be on their person? Is it not allowed to be on their person? Should it be some other remote location? Um I don't think we ever really figured that out, did we? I mean, it's technically the same as like the law has never changed. Big signs saying tobacco. Yep. Yeah. That the tobacco
products, even if they're in vape form, aren't allowed on campus. Yeah. You can't have cigarettes, nothing on campus. Yeah. And if they wanted use their vape, technically, they would need to go the same distance away from campus as you would to smoke a cigarette. So would that be like even in their car? They're not allowed to keep it in their car. No. In fact, um, and now this is going back to the cigarette days, but I remember, you know, I had a boss who smoked cigarettes and if you wanted to have a meeting with him, you would have a really horrible experience of hopping in the car with him so he could drive them, I think, what was it, 75 ft off campus in the car so he could smoke a cigarette while you were
having the conversation with him. In the car? Yeah. Well, for those of us who do not do well with tobacco smoke, it was a painful experience. But sometimes when you care a lot about getting what you need to support your students, you're willing to sacrifice your lungs to make a request. So, I mean, obviously, it takes a lot for um for a staff member to get to the point where somebody's actually going to be able to search your car. So, I mean, I'm not going to condone anything, but I probably air on the side of not bringing it in the classroom. Yeah, I think I think it's fine. They have it stored in their car. I just think they can't use it within Yeah, don't hold me to the 75 ft. It's what I remember,
but it might be. I think it's even further than 75 feet. I think it's like a thousand feet. Pile of cigarettes. Okay. So then my wondering is for this one um and then Tim we're on JICR. I almost feel like if we take out um I'm going to put it in blue. Not that there's anything wrong with it, but I think that if it's like within the first 30 days, they'll arrange a meeting that will include information on drug use prevention because then we don't have to worry about like is it an outside group? Have they been specially trained because we don't have something specific in mind. That would be my vote. That is so you would your vote is to keep that to take that out. The only thing we would keep for staff
education is that within the first days 30 days um the superintendent will arrange a meeting that includes information on drug abuse prevention. Yeah. And I what I would ask is maybe instead of a meeting it could be we'll arrange um a vector training just I think vector would be the right way to deliver a training we'll arrange a training. Yeah. Yeah. Because because then the beauty of Vector is not only do you like have a way to deliver it, but you also have a record that the employee received the training. And we we've had a couple of instances this year where, you know, issues related to employees were tied back to policy around training that they needed to receive. And then one of the questions that's come up is, well, did they in fact take
the training? And so because of the way Vector works, not only were we able to determine, yes, indeed they did, but we're even able to go back and see their score on the quiz, right? So indicating, so somebody tells you, well, I didn't, you know, I didn't know this, but they got 100% on the quiz. It's like, well, you may have forgotten it, but clearly you were able to answer the quiz questions correctly back on September 12th, you know, 2024 or whatever. That's funny. So thoughts on that? Taking that out? Are you guys okay with making it even more broad? Yeah. Jez, how do you feel? I feel good not making it uh I think you're saying not making it broader. No, no, I'm saying go ahead and leave it broad. Yeah, leave it broad
as it is. Sorry. No, no, you're good. Another vector training. Yay. It's what everybody wanted. Ask and you will receive. Uh the next one, um like we just said for we do have a community program like a community council uh about drug abuse prevention. The thing that I'm a little concerned about is almost taking um well actually I don't think you even need to take this out. In addition to presentations by school staff members, the program may include I think we could just leave it. It's basically community council and like what whichever group we have like not my kid. I also feel like the media people Yeah. And we're due to have them back. I can't remember what it's called. Well, if you think about it, in a lot of ways, social media functions like
an addictive drug. And so, it is it's one of the reasons we've tried to because it is a equally as big of a safety issue for kids as as drugs in the community. And so, we've kind of tried to treat it the same way and cycle them around annually as best we can. So, so yeah, I like it the way it is. It says May. So that's a that's a good word, especially this month. All right. So, that one is done. Um, let me just change the colors on these really quick. Okay. Okay. So, tobacco if you go to J I C G J I C G. So, this one doesn't really have anything that we didn't we didn't talk about, but it was I feel like it was like so covered by the other
things that we didn't really need to do anything else with it. But Katie's question, I don't know how we fix um like the petty offense part. So, I don't know if that just needs to be taken out or and I saw I didn't take a stab at um where are we at with the petty affirms name? If you go to JICG, it's the last line before the like adoption date. Okay, one second. All right, here you go, bud. Wait, put your head up. Hold on. I'm clipping by comment. All right, goodbye. Go. All right. Um, J I CG. Okay. You said it's the last thing before. Oh, under personal violence. The prohibition. Wait. Prohibition of what? What are we talking about again? Oh, tobacco use by students. It feels like a It feels like another
we're going to go and do this and this and this and also by the way that's committing a petty offense. So a petty offense under Arizona law is any offense which can only be punished by a monetary like punishment. So a fine it can't be punished by jail or p or imprisonment. Um, and so I I don't remember what I put as the note on here. Maybe I was going to figure it out because I don't remember what a petty offense was. But there's Okay. It feels weird to put it on to put that there. I mean, are we putting other places like a person who commits this is guilty of a class 4 felony? No. So, I'm just confused on why it's there. Well, and I feel like I wonder if this one was
a rushed one because it doesn't it really like the paragraph before is very very short too about like yeah, we might suspend them or expel him. Who knows? Yeah, we could probably take this out because we don't have like that if everyone's taking out this warned. Jez, are you good with taking out the um petty offense portion? Yes. Yeah. Okay. So then the next paragraph here, it just there I'm wondering if we just put exactly what we put in the drugs and alcohol, but just change it from drugs and alcohol to this. Um cuz we're just saying disciplinary actions and supportive services. And yes, we'll contact law enforcement if we need to. So that would take the place of that paragraph or that's an addition. Yeah. No, take the place of this a recommendation for
expulsion. Wow. Yeah, cuz this one's like going real hardcore compared to the like other ones. I mean, this we came we did this one in 2013. I bet we did the drug one has been updated because of all the other stuff. You smoked a cigarette. You're gone. So, how how would you guys feel about the replacing changing it to the blue one? What do you think, Mr. Canor? I'm okay. I just It's weird because a law is like any person who violates a section is guilty of a petty offense. I was just reading that 36798.03 3 just to see what what the law actually says, but it doesn't look like it's applying to kids. I mean, I guess a person would in include anybody, but I don't see why it needs to be in our
policy. So, this would change here. I mean, I like the blue a lot better. Like, yeah, shall be subject to disciplinary actions and supportive services. Okay. So, I'm [Music] gonna Are you good with it, James? Yes. Yes. Yes. So, then text drag out that add this. Okay. So, that's done. [Music] Um, it's too bad we don't have something like that for like chaperones on field trips. That'd be awesome. Well, it I mean anything that applies to staff would apply to Yeah, but these would be chaperons, right? So, you're saying they're volunteers. They're not staff chaperones. I've had more problems with chaperrons than I've had with kids on field trips sometimes. Do your CEO um do the chapron and the volunteer training with them? Yeah, because then it should tell them they selectively forget those things.
I think though well that might be I know Adriana brought up at the board meeting this committee perhaps once the student policies are completed looking at the staff policies but I think what you bring up brings into pretty clear focus that we probably would be um advantaged by taking a look at the volunteer policies as well to make sure that they're that they're in alignment. Um okay so the next part is we okay we didn't look at it it's JKD student suspension and then also um the expulsion um but the JKD everything that's in there is like current practice so I didn't know if we just wanted to read through and just be like this is fine um If you open up JKD the one part is that like this suspension stuff here about K4
we have from we should probably copy and paste what we put in uh JK uh just to make sure that it's exactly the same. And then we would need to start looking here. I'm going to just put it this first part in blue. Basically, what's in blue we would need to confirm everybody is good with. Um, when I read through this is like how we've been doing it. So, I think we could just read through as a group and decide. Um, that being said, I'd like to update you on the board thing and then the community council and then I might sedat if you guys are cool to do those lessons by yourself or we can just call it and say we didn't get this one done. Um so boy the community council was like
super easy like people were very nice um after at the end and then the governing board they wanted to thank everybody for like all the hard work that you've all put into it. Um, and they were also really happy to hear about the changes that we've made and they basically intimated that they want the committee to continue to try to finish all the policies and they were really amendable to the idea of um eventually having a staff policy group that would um meet to kind of align these best as best we could. They they also seem supportive, if the committee would like it, of shifting some of the committee work to virtual. And um can you repeat that? They were also supportive of shifting some of the work to virtual to make it easier on
the team because we know that sometimes being able to be in this room is a has been a bit of a hardship for people. So I mean I think we need personally I believe we need some inerson meetings but I don't know that all of them need to be in person. So we we could certainly look at shifting and and sort of mixing that up for next year. And then Amen. Apparently I'm not getting push back from from the board member who's who's exio. Um and then the other thing was that there is a desire uh for some students to work on um a student bill of rights and that this committee might tie into that because a lot of what would be in there really would be influenced by the shift that this team
has made in our student behavior policies to be more about rights and responsibilities than punitive, you know, reactions to behaviors. So, those are the updates for that. This is Jez. Oh, Jez, go ahead. I do like the in-person aspect. I just haven't been able to make these last few, but I do also like the option of online, and I like the idea of collaborating with students for a student's bill of rights. Yeah, I think that'd be cool. Okay, so you got one more vote to do without me. Would you like to decide um to read JKD in JKE? I did not look at JKE because I not I don't have a lot of familiarity with like expulsion because we've not done it in my experience. So that one I I would maybe recommend we hold
till next year. But if the team wanted to continue to look at JKD um from where I put blue on and make your recommendations or we just call it and just say we didn't get to it. Give us some more time. I feel like that one's pretty important. We should probably like have a pretty involved conversation about it. And I I would agree with that guidance. Um because like what I'd hate for us to do is we're in our final meeting and we're just trying to get that one done to complete it. It feels like it would be better maybe being, you know, we tend to have a little more fire and energy at the beginning of the school year than at the end. So maybe that should be queued up for the first thing
we hit start of next school year. And then maybe too it might be nice to make that like one of the first things that the APs look over because it it really it's interesting. We label it JKD and JKE, but really it's like regulations to JK. So that might also be something to consider is change it to like a regulation because it really is like the step-by-step process. So we could get the AP's recommendation of what they see and then decide if that fits like other policies. Is that everyone feels? Okay. It's been great snowing y'all. No, I'm kidding. Um I I we do have quorum without me though, right? Is that okay if I head out? All right. Well, I mean yeah, if I mean is everybody in a great I mean essentially we're
coming to a stopping point anyway, right? Yeah, I think so. I mean from from like a teacher perspective, it's very helpful to have the eights and principal input on some of these policies. Yeah. especially like with student suspension since as a teacher we're pretty far removed from the process. So I think I mean it it would be very helpful and it's always helpful to have Adriana you know when when you're here because you can talk to you know these are the papers that we're giving people and these are the procedures. So it's just it's helpful I think for the committee too to have those inputs from people who are actually implementing these policies. So it makes sense to wait. Yeah. And and this is something that thankfully happens infrequently. Yeah. So, I think it really
requires a lot more thought and discussion and and almost like, pardon the expression, but um like uh I don't want to call it roleplaying it, but like thinking about, well, what if this scenario happened and what if that scenario happened? Because, you know, some of these things we've been able to have conversations and people at the table have said, well, when this happened at my school or we've got a lot of this right now, but nobody at this table can say, "Oh, yeah, I've been involved in 15 expulsions." Right. got it. Um, in the air, thank you, Adriana. I know it's been a lot lately. Good everybody. Hi. Bye. Um, anything else for the good of the order before we move towards the end? Oh, I thought you were going to say something. A bug
flew in. I'm trying to make sure it's no longer on. All right. And so this is the final meeting. Uh, we did not determine that there were any other additional meetings. Thank you, Jesus. Um, uh, I motion to adjourn. Can I get a second? Second. Second. All right. Uh, we got a second. All those in favor say I. I. I. Motion passes. This meeting is adjourned. Thanks y'all for all your hard work this year. Again, I appreciate it and I hope everybody makes it through the end of the school year in one piece and um take some time off this summer and get some rest. Thank you all. Jay and Hilda, I'll see you on Tuesday. Next Tuesday, not tomorrow.
