question that I did um ask in our study session that I thought brought a lot of perspective so one of the questions I did ask was what do you think is going to work this year that didn't work last year and I think Dr Pomo gave me a great explanation of that um last time and it had to do with DNA um just because if you if you don't mind giving or Dr dupin a little context of the benchmarking that we used to have before and how we switched over to DNA and how it is aligned more with the outcomes I if maybe somebody can give a little bit of explanation on that Dr Poma would you like to or would you try I'll give it a go and then you can fill in fill
in the blanks she's I I shared on Saturday how grateful I am for Dr pombo because of how much I've learned working with her and I'm very very grateful so we discussed a couple of things uh that are different about learning this year number one is we are in the the second year of deep implementation of our new newly adopted math instructional resources those materials are the the title is into maath the publisher is hmh and the board approved the purchase two two years prior we had piloted went through an extensive process to select but anytime you adopt high quality instructional materials there's a learning curve and our staff have been focusing diligently on learning to use those resources effectively and so we anticipate at greater impact from those inputs those materials uh over the
course of time um as evident by this year's work so we're going to be continuing to support that work very very closely to ensure our teachers are well supported in using inth and that we're incorporating that data into the learning walks that we share with you when we report on our guard rails um in addition to that we've been on a we're in a two-year journey to implement implement the datawise process datawise comes to us from Harvard University um Dr Pomo was actually the person who introduced it to our leadership team formally and last year we worked really just with our leaders to understand an eight eight phase process in which we can organize for Collective work and focus our conversations around problems of practice for ourselves and learning centered problems that we can address
with our students and we repeat keep that process over and over using relevant relevant is that better using relevant uh instructional resources uh in order I've never had it usually it's not that bad it's because the air conditioning I think my apologies it's I usually can project well you're just so deir Eric yeah very you're very Demir I am very di mindful I'm mindful um so so we're we're in the step we're implementing datawise and now we're working to really take the data wise process into the work of our teachers each of our leaders is developing plans of action to support teachers and using the data wise process so whether we're talking about these kinds of data sets or other data set such as the Panorama surveys or our learning walk data we're now having
deeper and more frequent critical conversations action oriented conversations about the challenges that we face and the goals that we're trying to achieve yes one of the beautiful epiphanies that I had in the in the study session when they were discussing datawise is that we have a certain amount of guard rails right and one of our guard rails um it talks about how we will not allow adult convenience to get prioritized on the on behalf of the students basically and what he just said with data wise literally puts the perspective but back as what am I as an administrator what am I as a governing board member what am I as a teacher doing that's causing the the this this hurdle where kids are not moving the needle and it's never about our students it's always
about the adults and that's what this framework kind of brings us to it's coming to the realization and getting and stuff implemented like that datawise that really puts what we're doing as an institution and what we have to do to meet the needs of the students so when that new form these are the kind of questions that we like to ask during progress monitoring because we start finding out well what are you doing different I get we have this data that's been been happening for years and years what is different and through those conversations and through them connecting the guard rail with the goals we came out with something new that was Data wise and that's something new that we're going to try and it sounds like it's super aligned with kind of the language
and the jargon already that we have going on with the student outcomes Focus governance framework and it's coming from Harvard so it's not something that I I know people like to speculate about the work that we're doing um we're one of four school districts in the whole state of Arizona that are going this way right now so there's a lot of stuff going out there and it's research evidencebased information that we we're obviously lacking and this is going to take us to the right direction to start finding what's working and what's not so I appreciated that and I appreciated that explanation and one of the things as we start looking into the data I always want people to remember that it's not a good or a bad thing it's not that we had good people
or bad people it's literally the systems that we have in place that have not been working and some of them have been implemented kind of like our discipline policy since the 1800s the Inception of the school district so it's time to change and this work is exactly what is doing it's pushing us to think out of the box bring new things and make sure that the stuff that we do have at the district is working not only for our students but obviously for our community members so I appreciated that and if I can give a shout out just because I don't know that a lot of people do this but um you talked about this small number of groups that are doing the sofg work in Arizona there's also a very small number of districts
you had to apply and be accepted but there was a very small number of districts that were accepted this summer to go to Harvard to um get more specific fine-tuned training on the data wise program and and our team was one of those groups so we were able to send a five-person team that included um Dr dupin it included Dr pombo um our special education director Gretchen Kaiser who on the back miss Emily wolak um and Mr Ivon Carvajal and so and the selection of who went was not was also not random because you know one of the things when we look at our breakdowns when we have conversations about you know our our different subpopulations of students we wanted to make sure that we're doing this work for all students within the district so
that's why we were making certain that we had representation from special education we had representation from general education effective schools and Mr Carvajal um super important that so actually there was a time when I was going and I and and he took my seat which I was very excited about because what that allowed was for him to bring back the perspective of how do we extend this work to our community and to our families and So you you're seeing some of that start to happen I know these are not the goals we're on tonight but when we get to talking about goals three and four you will see some of that impact in some of the things we're doing this year to connect with families around our um English language development goals and so um
I'm just so thankful to the team for them to give up a week this summer to to go and get this training and not just go and get it for themselves they have since come back and worked as a team to provide the training to our um principles and assistant principls and directors and with a focus on then creating time for them at each at the end of each of the meetings to work on how they're going to take it back to their schools and then provide that information to the teaching staff and support staff at their School site so that way we can start to get this all the way down to the student level um before this year is out so we this is the second year we've been doing datawise but the
first year really was very high level of implementation and you're starting to see it you'll start to see it penetrate into the system this year and I think that was one of the things Dr pombo shared with us on Saturday so I'm not really this smart I just paid attention on Saturday you are very smart that's like you're a superintendent um yeah um that's that's awesome information and um do we have any questions and I just want to let everybody know that these progress monitorings we have to adopt them every meeting because these eventually will get tied to our superintendent's evaluation to hold our superintendent accountable for what we hired him to do so it's very important that we ask the questions now and that we have Clarity if there's any inklings of anything that
you don't understand and it now is the time or you know when you're having your 101s but once we adopt this then now we're accountable for this too because we're saying I understand what you're saying Dr dupin this makes sense I I understand the changes and why we're not going to meet it but it looks like we are doing so we have to vet this and make sure that we're convinced that our administrators are doing the different things that they need to to move the needle so I just want to make sure that's clarified with everybody and then um our community know that these will be tied to a superintendent evaluation once we get to that point and just to clarify while this indicates based on the information we talked about on Saturday that we're
not on track doesn't mean that we don't meet it right so the reason we watch to see if we're on track is to then make midar adjustments so that way we get back on track as best we can doesn't mean we'll be perfect every time but it won't be for lack of effort yep it's bringing in the team and saying hey we need to fix something before we go to the next quarter and we always like to look at Sports in this and everything that you do that's what you do you're in a game first quarter you huddle with your coach what's going on what do we need to change it just makes sense that we're doing that in this education space what's going on with our kids they did this what do we need
to change what needs to happen so I'm really proud of all the collaborative work um do we have any other quad measure this specific in measure 1.1 okay looks like we can move on to the next in measure so one to thing things I want to point out before I move slides is we've labeled this as a current measure because when you're thinking about student growth there's two things we want to monitor one is what's happening right now in this case goal one focusing on eighth graders what's happening with this year's eighth graders currently so that's the the methodology between current measure but then for the um inner measure 1.2 what about the kids that are going to be the eighth graders in 2028 those are our fifth graders right right now so we want
to monitor their progress and their growth as well so that's the rationale behind interm measure 1.2 so we're following these students we had a great conversation on Saturday about how to how we will continue to track the progress of these students So eventually we we imagine this graph is going to get pretty long because we're going to follow the kids that are enrolled as fifth graders throughout their time with us until the the termination date of our goal so that we can be continuously making the needed adjustments to accom to accomplish our goal um so in our analysis a couple of highlights are that the August 2024 rate of fifth grade students scoring minimally proficient was 95% on the preest and it remained in line so we see that same Trend as with the eighth
grade assessment they there's that high level of minimal proficiency followed by a substantial decrease by the end of the year so that is positive now is it enough that's what we want to make sure that we're continuing to push so that we're reducing that minimal proficiency to reach our ultimate goal and then to reach inter measure 1.1 by May of 2025 uh we need to decrease minimal proficiency by about 16% so the we're at the 95 level now we want to get down to 79 our trend has been able to to to do that but we're we're really going to push um our current year fifth graders came in at the at the end of fourth grade 86% of them are at the minimal proficiency level so that's kind of challenges to get from 86
to to 79 with that current group of students we'll be watching them very very closely and we are currently on track to meet this in this interim measure 1 point2 thank you and um I'm not going to ask any other questions because my initial question would have been what do you think happened you know like what are we doing different from 2020 23 post that we had 63 to 2023 24 post but one of those explanations was already given which was the data wise and then one thing that we didn't really talk today but we also had a whole bunch of learning learning walks and on our guardrails and what that actually looks like and what it does when they're actually doing the learning walks and that gave us a better of explanation how they're
really being intention intentional on observing what's going on and connecting the missing dots on whether it's if a student's receiving something or not but that's what the learning walks are and that's something different that we're going to be doing so hopefully we see a little bit um of a pivot change Miss kson mle and just to clarify you're saying that conversation about the learning walks happened on Saturday on that wonderful video you can R yes yes the sixh hour lovely video we're putting you on our marketing team but um but one of the things I want to share too that was talked about on Saturday that I think was really powerful I don't remember if it was here or if it was you know when we get to the what's working what needs more attention
um but since you mentioned the learning walks the other piece that happened was it just last Friday it's been a really long couple of weeks I think it was just last Friday um uh Miss MC cheffrey was able to join us when we worked with our kraton kids Congress kids and so um we had this opportunity to bring in student representatives from each of our schools and um a couple of our coaches and along with um you know Dr pombo and and Miss MC cheffrey and Dr dupin they were able to have conversations with the students about um so what's happening in your math classroom so we we got thear learning walk data which is us going into the classrooms um you know which is both you know Folks at the site level leadership and
also at the district level leadership um we've shifted to hitting pretty much every classroom when they're doing those those learning walks at the schools but that's the adults coming in the room and having adult observation what we were able to do last Friday was talk to a representative group of students and find out what their experience has been with some of the things that are happening with math and our math and instruction in our classrooms and the things that we have been trying to implement to improve learning and are they seeing those things occur in the classroom and and get their perspective on all of that which I don't I've never seen another District do that I'm not saying we're the first because they don't do that I I I I was told that we're
the first district in this framework to include student voice that way so your your assumptions are correct and then also um the folks and kids Congress are not all just the top academic performers yeah yeah our our seel the selection criteria we provide to our principles is we're not necessarily looking for the valedictorians we're looking for kids who are willing to talk to adults and speak up and share their perspective and in point of fact with no disrespect to any of the students we've we've literally had students who have shared with us that you know they they sometimes get in trouble in school like so they're not you know just always the best behaved or the best academically we're trying to get kids who are kind of the informal leaders on their campus that are
brave enough to come and tell the adults you know what's really happening and a similar group of kids some of them were the same from last year some are are new to us this year but they were the same kids that uh the board engaged with around the student outcomes Focus governance goals as well so yeah and I just love that component piece for anybody listening that we really have centered student voice in this to it's kind of me ironic how we do all these implementations at all these rules and expect students to do a lot and we leave that's the first voice that we leave out so that's we've been very adamant and I'm so happy that without even board Direction the cabinet just came and told us and was like by the way
we changed a couple of things because our students are experiencing X Y and Z and this is why we think stuff needs to be changed and I wish just in awe and it shows the intention of actually doing this for the students where you know in other places it can be like whatever we're we're just writing and doing things to them and there's a lot of intention being put into this and I'm so thankful for that because it's a heavy lift to like I said change systems where for years the same thing has happened look at us who would have thought yeah yes so do we have any other questions or comments regarding the specific inra measure 1.2 unless you needed to add something else Dr dupin I didn't mean you out all right it
doesn't look like we have anything else and I believe the last slide um if you just want to go over the last slide please we speak about what's working and What needs more attention uh we do see more evidence of use of the curriculum and instructional resources we do intend in future written up written progress monitoring reports to include Some of That explicit data from the students uh so some of the things that they told us that are working are that they are using the instructional resources they are getting access to in an inconsistent way and we have data to go with this but but sometimes yes sometimes no the teachers are clarifying learning targets but there's lot a lot less frequent use of success criteria and the success criteria are how you as a
student know that you're you've learned what was intended so we I've identified that as a as an area of future progress not only from our learning walk data but also uh with our students um we have adjust Ed Craton professional learning to provide additional opportunities for teachers to participate in targeted professional development in mathematics um what we next need to do is really make sure that that content is Flowing to Fifth and eighth grade teachers explicitly um so shifting into what needs more attention making sure that we have that we're providing greater awareness about the current and interim measure and annual targets at the teacher level so we brainstormed even on Saturday of strategies for getting the message out to really help uh We've also you know we're working to distribute awareness and accountability for
these goals so under Mr man's leadership we're currently in the process of as we confer with all of our principles around goal setting we're in the process of re rewriting the administrative evaluation in instrument to reflect the annual targets as well as the the guard rails and so then that will provide clar and focus at the school level uh our teaching and learning coaching team has been working really diligently to support teachers who are new to the district as we move deeper into the gear we're going to want to make sure that we're pivoting that Focus to help support the the fifth and eighth grade teachers in mathematics specifically and then we are by the end of the week we have our last round of learning walks we're going to hit our goal of 200
learning walks for this quarter we have our last round at built more on Thursday morning um and we while we're proud of the fact that we've met that goal we know that that's that's probably not sufficient we need to do some additional targeted work in fifth and eth grade to ensure that we're really uh providing the clarity and support to accomplish these interims I'm really appreciative of what needs more intention I've been a governing board member for four years and this is the first time I've had an actual conversation with administrators on their week spots and what they're going to do to make it better so I appreciate the transparency I know it's not easy um and just the fact that it says in here you know the teaching and learning coaching team needs to
adjust case loads to maximize the focus in fifth and eighth grade math teachers doing Quarter Two you guys this already shows me that there's a game plan on what that second quarter what's failing and this is perfect so I I'm just so happy to see this and have these convers Sation so we as governing board members know where the pressure needs to be applied what what do we need to approve when stuff comes to us what's working so I appreciate it and and thank you for the board's leadership because you know we talked a little bit on Saturday about through lines and vertical articulation right and so I think to me the most powerful thing is when there is articulation that flows all the way from the leadership of the governing board down through the
superintendent's office the executive team to our principals and directors and assistant principls through to our teachers and staff and hopefully all the way through to our students um I think I share I don't know if I've managed to share this with all of you but you know one of our principals shared with me um some photos of the goal setting work that's happening you know directly with students and it was I must have been having a rough day and I didn't know it but this principal knew I was so to cheer me up what she sent me was pictures of um student goal setting she goes I know this is your favorite this should cheer you up so um so you know shout out for that because that really did make that day much better
but that is really ultimately what the goal is we we want to have everybody working on the same things in the same direction if we're all working together and we're all moving in the same direction there's nothing that can hold us back or stop us from being successful yeah Miss Gibson did you have something oh I'm sorry just laughing when I scratched my face sorry no it's okay yeah it's beautiful to see and that's the most important thing school um systems are built for student outcomes and to make sure that they feel empowered and it's so beautiful when a third grader is coming to you and telling them yep I know what I'm supposed to be doing this is my goal for this class and this is what I'm going to do and it's just
so amazing to even see their lights face up when they understand why they are in the place they are or why they understand that they have to have a certain goal and teaching them that at this age is going to do wonderful things for them later on I didn't start learning about goal setting and smart goals until I was like in my late 20s so the endless possibilities that we're giving to these students and learning at this age is just so powerful and that's exactly why I personally am here to do is that our students feel empowered any other questions or comments before I move on to approving oh this is so exciting all right I am going to go ahead and make the motion that the governing board approve the progress monitoring report for
October 1st 2024 24 all those in favor I yay thank you so much for that and thank you thank you thank you thank you and I will never stop thanking all the administrators for all the hard work because I know this takes a lot it's a lot of thinking of other things and and I also hope it's a renewed of refreshness of like okay now we have a goal let's let's get it done and that brings us to 5A which is public comments it looks like we have one public comment if I can have Miss Anne Campbell come up please I filled out the right card yes this is perfect thank you so much and you will have three minutes Oh I thought I had five it's three okay well you're gonna have to cut
me off oh yeah the the the timer yeah you'll hear it well um good evening members of the school board staff parents and students thank you for giving me the opportunity to speak today I'm here to express my hope that the cron school district will bring school resource officers or sros back to our schools uh as we well know the safety and well-being of our children is a top priority schools are meant to be safe spaces for learning growth and development but in today's world the unfortunate reality is that schools are not immune to the dangers we see in society whether it's violence drugs or threats from outside the school Community that's where school resource officers come in SRO serve as an essential part of our school safety strategy and their presence provides a visible
deterrent to potential threats there are trained law enforcement professionals who understand how to respond to emergencies deescalate conflicts and manage critical situations their quick response can make all the difference in a crisis whether it's stopping an active threat or intervening in a serious incident now I know that there are some concerns have been raised about the presence of police officers in schools and I respect that importance of discussing those concerns however I believe that with proper training and clear guidelines in place sro's can and should focus on being a positive presence not a punitive one many SRO already undergo specialized training in dealing with youth conflict resolution and even mental health issues when they're used correctly they're not there to criminalize minor misb behavior they're there to support students insurance safety and help resolve issues
constructively moreover SRO programs can be continuously improved we can work together with enforcement to make sure SRO have the tools and training to address unique needs of our school Community by fostering dialogue and collaboration between schools families and law enforcement we can ensure that the presence of SRO is a benefit tall in conclusion the presence of school resource officers in our schools is a critical element in creating a safe and secure learning environment they deter threats respond to emergencies and most importantly they build positive relationship with students by supporting SRO we not just enhancing school safety but also investing in the well-being of our entire School Community um the State of Arizona has 15 million dollar that assigned uh to uh fund for the school's SRO um I have given the contact information to Mr
man I want to thank you for your time and consider duration I urge you to bring back the school resource officer programs in our schools thank you thank you that brings us to 6A which is approval of consent I move the governing board approve consent agenda items a through F in accordance with policy go V5 second excuse me all those in favor I I sorry all right and that brings us to 12a Future agenda items do we have any future agenda items hearing none that brings us to 13A I move the governing board adjourn second all those in favor I much graas W noes thank you for coming for
