e e e bues good afternoon to everybody we're gonna go ahead and get started with today's meeting the crane school district understands that our community of schools is located on the ancestral land of the oam jid and eim oam to people who descended from the Hohokam and have inhabited these lands since the time immemorial the oam whose name translates literally to people are vibrant culture and communities spaning countless Generations into the past continue to thrive in the present and carrying a powerful Legacy for Generations into the future with this acknowledgement the C School District formally recognizes that the traditional caring keeping of these lands by indigenous people is an aspirational model of community stewardship that we are committed to honor with practices policy and human relations that brings us to our next agenda item of
the Pledge of can you please miss MB can you please lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance thank you I pledge aliance to the of the United States of America and to the repic for it stands Nation indivisible lice thank you so that brings us to itmc which a r call we have Miss Gibson McLean Miss SS myself and Miss Michaela present in today's meeting we want to welcome everyone to tonight's meeting and remind the audience of their request to address board cards that must be completed and submitted to the board secretary if they wish to speak to an agenda item board policy provides for two cards White cards to be submitted in order to speak to an agenda item and blue cards to be submitted in order to speak during public comments due to
open meeting law board members are not allowed to address item that are not on the agenda that's prayer policy B DH that brings us to 2A which is approval of agenda I move the governing board approve the agenda as presented second all those in favor I I I thank you that brings us to um our 3A which is governing board reports and Miss MB since I have you on my right side we'll go ahead and get started for with you if you have anything right um well for first of all welcome back and uh I hope everyone had a wonderful first few days back I know it's exciting and chaotic all at the same time um but I know all those kids were excited to see all of their teachers and admin all over again
um and I got to attend the new teacher orientation uh breakfast and lunch phenomenal job by the team um I heard a lot of really great feedback from the teachers as well as the presenters um and then got to go to the rally as well which was absolutely amazing the energy was very contagious so um that was super amazing and um for any of you techie nerds out there uh the Senate passed Copa 2.0 which is the children's online privacy protection act we already have Copa that's what dictates that children of a certain age can't be using different Technologies without parental consent along with a lot of other details but they're up updating it um for the most part pretty non-c contentious um but they also passed a new law called kosa which is the
kids online safety act and there is some contention around it as far as censorship um but basically the idea is protecting children more from social media and the harm and that it can do to their mental health so there are some really great benefits to it but as with any bills there's a lot of fine language um so the house is on recess until September so we won't hear anything else more about it but um definitely worth paying attention to because that will impact the technology we use with our students in the classroom the responsibilities that our Educators have with that as well as communicating with our parents too thank you so much for that Miss SS um good evening everyone um welcome back as well um I was sad that last week I didn't
get to come to any of the new teacher stuff um I got a new position at work and I had to start quite a bit sooner my summer ended quite a bit sooner than I wanted it to um so I kind of missed out but I did get to go to the rally and I really really enjoyed it um it was nice that it was on a Tuesday instead of the same day as mine usually is um so um I love the message and uh it was really personal personal to me and um I took a lot from it so I really really liked it and um I appreciate whoever managed to snag that guy that um spoke he was amazing um I hope everybody is having a great first week um and we'll have
a good year thank you so much Miss Gibson mle I was gonna say is is that the gentleman that spoke at Cube last year yes Alex were you there a cube oh I was like oh you didn't see him interesting um because get my wires crossed well hello everybody um I wanted to come to some things last week and I was going to come to the morning whatever that was but I got stuck in a courtroom for three hours for something that took five minutes um so that was fun and uh I hope everyone had a great time and a good first day back um I'm happy to be here uh last this is August so last month I went to caby which is the California Association for black black school educators conference in Napa
it was a cool fun conference to go to they had great workshops I have things written down on some pieces of paper in my home right now that I did not bring with me there are people that I would like to connect with um and some researchers that I think would be cool for us to have them hopefully share things with us um if we were nice um and I just thought it was a great conference with kind of a different vibe than some of the other conferences we go to mainly because um throughout the whole first day there weren't even breakout sessions there were just these large big room conversations um that I guess you know they're encouraging people to be candid and open and honest and have these larger conversations among a group
about issues that are impacting specifically black and brown Youth and so I mean we're starting from a whole different spot than some of the other conferences we go to and the conversations that we had and I just really enjoyed it and there were lots of people to meet with and learn things from there so I really appreciated the opportunity to go um other than that I don't think I have anything else just happy School Year yay awesome thank you for that um I just have a couple of things to touch on capsi yeah the California Association black school Educators it was awesome their theme was black to Basics and it was just awesome to know that we were in a conference where that it was aligned with our goals right one of our goals is
our 0% black students in grade will pass the math standardized test and to be in a room full of doctors educator professionals superintendent Schoolboard members from California knowing that this is an issue that's happening Statewide and they also are having these conversations in their local governing board meetings and making sure that our students that are you know their most vulnerable are getting the attention and they and the resources that they need was just awesome a lot of good networking from there to hopefully bring into the school district as well um new teacher education every you know the new teachers and the welcome back rally were awesome I am a 10 is my favorite message now I see our superintendent wearing their sticker I mean the pin that says I am a 10 and it's just
really awesome um I was able to also participate in the kids Congress conversation that our guest speaker or that our panel speaker keynote speaker had and that in itself is amazing to see how children were coming together the students and creating these ideas on how they will spread this positivity instead of going into the school year thinking you know about what's going to go on with academics or all these different things they were literally going and brainstorming on how they're going to bring this positivity and this you know loving yourself and the more that you love yourself at a 10 how that will project and it's interesting that these conversations we're having with the students because if you think about our student outcomes focused government governance work that's one of the things that we do
say right is that I am the Genesis of change and change will start with us and then eventually it ripples off so for our students to be getting that kind of same messaging it's very aligned and I was just so proud to see the students and how they were so in their in theirselves and their in their power they were literally holding in into their power and how they're going to go into the classrooms and making sure that that power is rippled with their colleague I mean with their students as well so that was great to see um another thing with capsi I I'm just really happy to with the alignment of copper um education Alliance that we just joined they are partner with capsi as well so the fact that everything's starting to align
in the district and we're heading in the right direction to make sure that our students are putting up at the front front at the Forefront is awesome to see and I did want to let everybody know that we have a Appropriations Committee coming up that I saw that I think it's really interesting for anybody in the community to see um it's an input meeting on August 15th from 4 to 5 and it's basically um for anybody that wants to discuss or give input on how crayon School District uh proportion it shares to support students enrolled by parents at private schools so this is a good conversation I'm hoping that community members that have an interest this in show up and give your input because this does affect us and with that being said um I
have nothing else and I'll turn it over oh I do have one more thing's the host of that meeting um do we know I'm not sure yeah who's the host of this take it there because I believe it is a a mandatory meeting yes we are hosting the meeting here in house are you facilitating we can't discuss the meeting just because we're not post okay sorry saying for the information that we're giving out to people so they know who the person is it's in the Comm yeah it's in the community newsletter I'm not sure who's putting it together but we're hosting it and it's going to happen at the crayon school district office in the lunch conference room on August 15th between 4 to 5 thank you you're welcome and then the last thing I
want to say is I know Monday was the first day of school I got to see some behind the scenes at the end of the school when kids are getting picked up and my I it was just another moment of gratitude that I had for the principals the teachers the staff on getting everybody making sure the kids are not out in the heat how they had to rechange all the operations that was going on at this specific school to make sure that the kids were inside classrooms in shade it was just you know we really do have superheroes in the school district and that's how I'm going to say it because it was hot everybody was running back and forth and with the young kindergart gardeners who don't know their parents' name who don't even
know their own names you can see how that can get very hectic when parents are trying to find their children at that age I'm I'm just so thankful for all the bodies and all the moving parts that we have in the district to make sure that every child goes to the designated home or goes to their who they need to so I I got to see a little bit of that and I I'm in awe of all the superpowers that individuals have within them to take care of these or of our students and with that I will turn it over to Mr Man thank you Madame President um members of the board it it's always interesting being at this time of year with with school kicking off um I really I want to reiterate your
shout out to our principles and our staff like all the hard work that goes into making sure um that we're getting kids safely on into our schools getting them set up for the year and and getting the school year started um in addition to that I know a lot of our district office team members are deployed out to the sites um for the beginning of school trying to provide some extra support so many thanks to all of them um I want to give a shout out to our transportation department because I got to ride with one of our bus drivers Mark um on Monday morning which was super fun to see the kids all excited to get back to school and um you know they're confused as to why some guy in a suit's on
the bus with them but you know they were they were very gracious and um and it was really it was nice to get a chance to you know to see all of that flowing smoothly um for transportation and um shout out to our cafeteria team as well um our our nutrition and wellness team um got had an opportunity to help serve some corn dogs and burritos for lunch that day um and that was actually super fun as well so um I just for me that first day one of the things that's really special about getting to do some of the things that I don't normally get to do is that it lets me see kind of what you were saying president koreo that behind the scenes of all the hard work and effort that goes
in in a V wide variety of areas to make sure everything works including getting a chance to visit our newest campus um Kennedy School which you know opening a brand new school that is opening a school in general is stressful and rough so my kudos to our staff and and our leaders at our school sites but opening a brand new schol schol it's like you don't know what you're missing until the first day of school and then you're scrambling I know Vanessa and her team were working hard to like fill some gaps as we were finding out you know some some bits and pieces that were missing but um PR principle LeBron was just doing a great job the parents the families were great we had ABC 15 out who did a news story on
the new school opening and I think one of the highlights of the day the highlights of the day are always getting intera students but one of our students um there Indigo was was interviewed on ac15 and I don't I don't recall if this made it into the interview but um the I am a 10 with Alex Boyer was mentioned um and so the that student's teacher on her whiteboard had I am a 10 and had all her reasons why she was a 10 and when the student was being interviewed by abc5 they asked her well what is it that you um are learning today on the first day of school and she said well you know we always start off with procedures and and all that and we learn this and we learn that and
she goes and I really like that we learned that I am a 10 and it like really warmed my heart that you know we were able to bring this great speaker in and that it was we saw the impact with the students he worked with in that afternoon as you mentioned earlier but beyond that you know you could also see that our teachers were impacted by it and that they were bringing that message forward and so to me that's a big jump start to the school year because if we can help make sure our students are seeing their own value we get ahead of you know behavior issues bullying you know we get people in the right mindset to know that they can be successful and prepare them for learning they learn more they perform
better and so it just you know the year will have its challenges but I just feel like it was a really great start to the school year and not just saying that because you know it sounds good to say it was a really great start to the school year um I know um um principal Gutierrez is here with us in the audience and he was one of the school sites I got to visit and he was just so calm and I thought how can he be so calm it's the first day of school right but it was because things really were flowing pretty smoothly for the first day of school so a lot of that also goes to all the hard work done over the summer by by our teams as well and then lastly
I know I've gone on a bit too long today um I have a story to share that is not my story it was sent to me by principal cardier and it kind of ties back to the comments earlier about seeing behind the scenes because apparently our our board president went behind the scenes as well so she sent me this story it says yesterday I sent a robo call to our families asking for their patience this week with dismissal 20 minutes later Sophia shows up at school and says I can help where do you want me she helped get all of our kids in cars and stayed outside in the heat for a 38 minute dismissal on the first day was super kind of her and are Beyond grateful so sorry to put you on the
spot I know you didn't do it to get recognition but it really touched me when I heard that so yes we have a lot of superheroes in our midst and um you know it's that it's really corny that old saying it takes a village to raise a child I mean one of the really awesome things about kraton is we function as a village and we're all hands on deck to try to support our kids in our community so makes me very proud to be here and thank you for the time thank you and thank you Miss cardier there will probably be Vengeance um that brings us to our next item which is student outcomes Focus governance update 4 a we do not have a slideshow in here we actually do have a meeting coming set
up with our coach which is Dr Ramos and we're in the process of getting our intrum goals for the guard rails and we're going to start up our intrum progress monitoring calendar report I know that some links have been shared amongst the board members and hopefully with the awesome new revamp of the website that we have that I'm totally in love with um we can start tying some of that stuff in there too documents so everybody can kind of go along where where this framework is going and the next step is actually putting our monitoring calendar set up we now have our board goals each goal has to be monitored you know a certain time during the quarter year and now we're going to have a full Year's worth of calendar to make sure that
we're staying on track that we're following the interim goals the goals and then once the interim for the guard rails get up they will be put in the calendar too so for a next board meeting we will be able to have a little bit more of clarity in the calendar hopefully set up for that um also we have a study session coming up on September 28th I believe it's September 28th Miss htis and that's going to be a very important study session that we invite you know the community any staff members that want to be involved and especially any um Schoolboard candidates that we have just because at that um study session we're going to be really deep diving into uh how this next school year is going to look like with our goals moving
forward in our guard rails and go into depth it's about I think we're scheduled from 9 to 3 so 9:00 am to 3 p.m. and we'll be in this room um we'll have more information coming up but that's when we're really going to I'm go into all the details of how that's going to start looking um I know we don't have a slide but do you guys have any questions or comments that you guys would like asked of Dr Ramos or anything no and then I don't know if cabinet or Mr Man if you have any additional comments yeah I just would add that um one of the things that we're kind of furiously working on is figuring out those interim measures for the for the guard rails themselves and looking forward to you know
when we get to work with Dr Ramos coming up you know just kind of getting some additional Clarity on that I know as we went through the goals we had a few fits and starts along way which I think was really healthy because we learned a lot and we really were able to refine and get to where we needed to be not only with the goals but with the annual targets and the interims but um I think very excited to get uh the interims and the targets for the guard rails locked down as well okay awesome I don't believe we have any other discussions so we'll go ahead and move into our next agenda item which is 5A public comments Miss wattis do we have any um public comments no we don't okay thank you
that brings us to six which is approval of consent I move the governing board approve consent agenda items a through V in accordance with policy bb- e second all those in favor I I I thank you that brings us to 7A Educational Services this is the request approval of affiliate agreement with the University College of Nursing and healthc Care professions at Grand Canyon University and gr I mean and crayon School District do we have any discussion or any questions regarding this item doesn't look like it okay yeah go ahead Miss gson I understand that this is uh it's my understanding that it's like an a just a regular agreement that we do would be akin to like student teaching agreement with the university um and so there's like no money exchanged right that that is
correct and I defer to Dr dupin and um Miss Kaiser who's here with us this evening as well okay um were there any other um uh um I don't know what word to use potential relationships explored with like Maricopa County community colleges or any other educational institutions or is this the only one I know we're always looking for those partnership opportunities but I I don't know the specifics of which ones we've attempted to engage in so I don't know if the team has any others that we've looked at Miss Kaiser if you're able to come forward and speak to the continent the agreement and specifically if you know if we've communicated with other entities that would be great thank board president um governing board members Mr Man and leadership team um we are always looking
to partner and affiliate with um with count with the colleges and different Partnerships to not only increase and build on the capacity of our leaders and our teachers and and such but also the collaboration for potential pipeline opportunities and employment I cannot speak to what other organizations that we were solicited but um it is a great pleasure of mine as ESS member of the team that our leads oftentimes are reaching out throughout the year to support that so no I don't have a current list but I do know that that is something that we do intermittently throughout the year to build that collaborative um opportunity um with other organizations outside of just the one on the governing board agenda thank you um if I could add um I I know this agreement is specifically regarding
the nursing program but we do have existing agreements with the Arizona State University and NAU and the community colleges for General uh and special education uh classroom teachers for internships certainly I guess my concern is well one my top concern is always that I would rather have Partnerships with Public Schools whenever possible that's just my philosophy number two my other personal issue is is that we've been talking about how we can create Partnerships even within our own like more nuclear Community here and Nur the nursing program at Gateway I feel like has been there since I was in high school I mean I think that there's ways that we can uh walk it like we talk it and figure out how to build relationships here in this exact very small community um and so I
would love for us to try our best to and this is again just my personal opinion go with public and try to get them as close to home as possible my very last one is just I know it doesn't have to do with nursing and there's no money being exchanged but our district is very unique and everybody knows that in terms of our um socioeconomic demographics from the north side of the district to the south side of the district we also know what a big issue gentrification is in our district and I wouldn't want to get into an agreement with an organization who's contributing to gentrification in a different neighborhood across town they had a very contentious uh situation where they uh were responsible for evicting people out of a trailer home park um and
not providing or following through on what was promised to provide adequate ways for th those folks to relocate um and I just personally am not down with any any organization that moves in that way and given how close to home gentrification is for our district I just wouldn't want to be in a professional partnership with them so that's just all of my piece and we can have other discussion and vote do we have any other questions or discussion okay hearing none and then um misses I'm going to do a roll call vote I move the governing board approve I think it's yeah it's okay I move the governing board approve the affiliate agreement with the University's College of Nursing and healthc Care professions at Grand Canyon University through June 30th 2026 Miss MB oh sorry
second okay Miss MB hi myself nay Miss SS hi and Miss Gibson so it's 2 to two so motion does not pass correct thank you 11a approval for continuing of governing board advisory committee for review and recommendations on the following board policies fncc fnf foa fod and any other related policies I will go ahead and turn it over to Mr Man to have this conversation and then if you want to go ahead and get us started thank you yeah thank you Madame President members of the board um and I'm gonna rely pretty heavily on on Miss gipson mlan who was very helpful um ex officio with this with this committee last year um one of the things that happened as an outcome of the committee work last year is there were a lot of recommendations
related to the policies around student conduct um we did not manage to get them integrated because of the change in policy service providers and in order to make sure that our policy Services were stood up in time for the start of the school year um we went with sort of the vanilla copper policies just to get off the ground because the crosswalk was going to take a bit of effort so one of the the hopes is um regardless of how we move forward with that crosswalk and integration it it felt to me that um this team should probably review that before it comes back to the board for recommendation to make sure that the intent that they had in making those recommendations is represented in the new recommendations um related to our shift in policies
and in addition to that as Miss Warz has included in this item there were four policies that we did not get to you don't see them reflected under their own policy letter she's tracked them down to where they live in the new policy manual um My Hope Is that the work for the team will be smoother and easier on those four starting from you know basically already more uh tightly put together policies that aren't quite as verbose as the policies that we were dealing with originally but um the I think from an from the administrative perspective and I'd be curious to hear Miss kipson mcan's perspective because we haven't had a chance to talk it feels like it would be helpful to bring not only bring this um committee back into bear for this school
year but perhaps rather than trying to repopulate it to see if the participants from last year would come back because I think that would expedite the work and ensure um the ongoing alignment of the work work so I definitely agree with all of that um sorry I was trying to navigate to um the new policy situation here I'm sorry um just I wasn't familiar with the new I haven't memorized the new lettering yet so I was like uh I'm not sure which ones those are yeah they're they're all in F instead of J okay I know I I'm like okay so yes I would say I'm totally down with this and I think we should move forward with this um the one thing I would add is so that we don't h i mean we
could bring it back but one thing that we T discussed was um moving forward and doing the same work with the staff conduct policies and so I don't know if we want to add that in now or revisit it at a later date so that we could like seamlessly move into it or you guys just want us to stop and come back I I could see it either way but what what might be elegant and this is just a thought is um and this may be optimistic my hope would be maybe for the first half of the year we could get this finished and cleaned up and get through these last four policies and then perhaps in the second half of the year um put a committee together and at that point if people want
to continue to participate that would be great but if they want to hop off and rotate a little bit then at least you know we're giving people that opportunity at that point um plus that will give Miss Suarez and I an opportunity to figure out um specifically which policies we're dealing with at that point so that way we can represent them in the board action I agree I just wanted to make sure that was on folks radar and I mean I'm I um am certainly committed to continuing this work myself if I'm permitted to and um you know it's nice to have I wouldn't call it a baby but some sort of project to work on as a board member that's outside of meetings or things that you would normally do so this is the
kind of stuff I get nerdy about and excited about so if everybody's down I'm ready to continue doing this I know the really appreciated as well miss Michaela or Miss SS any other comments or discussion regarding this item um just that I think all the work that was done is super valuable and I think we're right to not try and rush or just set aside like oh those are good enough so I see tremendous value in continuing with the trajectory that you all have yeah and I agree also so I think this is a good idea and I appreciate that this was even something that Miss Gibson McAn is able to continue and do because I do know that the committee was very appreciative of having her there um so with no more questions or
just discussion I'm going to go ahead and make the motion um I move the governing board approv to continue the governing board advisory committee to review and give recommendations on the following board policies fncc fnf foa fod and any other related policies with approval to the direct superintendent to bring forth the same committee members from the last school year in addition to approve that Mr Man and Miss Gibson McLean continue to serve as ex official members of the committee second all those in favor I I I thank you motion passes that goes to 12a Future agenda items do we have any future agenda items all right any discussion on any of the stuff that's going on in the schedule just remember the study session is September 28th our progress monitoring calendar should be all done
and set up by the 17th because between here in actually August 20th meeting we will be having our sitdown all right hearing none we go ahead and move to the next agenda item which is 13A I move the governing board adjourn second all those in favor I IES thank you to everybody have a great night thank
