001Good evening guests. Chris Strange here, the director of the Lafayette Jazz Ensemble here at Lafayette High School in Lexington, Kentucky. We are in the process of preparing for our performance at the 79th annual Midwest Band and Orchestra International [music] Conference. So, these students have already achieved a high level just by even being invited to perform. And we were very fortunate enough to be asked to play [music] at this conference. The song you're about to hear is one of the songs that we are going to be playing. We're playing 10 [music] songs at this conference. This song is one of our more difficult ones. Um, [music] it is a song that was written about 20 years ago. It's called Living Larger Than Life by Alan Bailock. Really fun tune to play. [music] The students have enjoyed

002it. They've enjoyed working on it. It's one of those tunes that you hear it and you'll probably walk [music] away kind of humming the melody. With this song, you're going to see uh the result [music] of hours of work both in and out of class. In a typical school year, we'll learn anywhere between 20 to 25 songs. So, you're going to see all that hard work. You're going to see different groups [music] within the ensemble. You'll see our saxophones in the front row, our trombones in the second row, our trumpets in the third row. Those are our normal wind instruments that [music] we use in jazz ensemble. And then you'll see our rhythm section where we have our drum set, piano, bass, and some auxiliary [music] stuff. all of those groups working together to create

003a different style and feel. One of the unique [music] things about this particular song that we're doing is in an Afrouban style, which is not your typical jazz swing style, but I chose this piece [music] uh for the conference for its uniqueness. So, please enjoy Alan Blocks Living Larger than Life [music] performed by the Lafayette High School Jazz Ensemble. >> [music] [music] >> Heat. Heat. >> [music] [music] >> Heat. [music] Heat. Heat.
