all right we're going to go ahead and get started soon W noes thank you for everybody to being here going to take a couple more minutes and then we'll get started just wanted to let every ready know all right we're going to go ahead and get started with our land acknowledgement the crayon School District understands that our community of schools is located on the Asal land of the oam Jude and alch oam people who descended from the Hohokam and have inhabited these lands since time immemorial the oam whose name translates literally to people are a vibrant culture and Community sping countless Generations into the past continuing to thrive in the present and carrying a powerful Legacy of generations into the future with this acknowledgement the cran School District formally recognizes that the traditional care and

keeping of these lands by indigenous people is an aspirational model of community stewardship ship that we are committed to honor with practices policy and human relations and with that Miss Shapiro will lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance I aliance to the flag of the United States of America to the rep stands Nation indivisible that brings us to our roll call we have Miss Gibson mle here miss MC cheffrey myself Miss MB and Miss SS once again we want to welcome everyone to tonight's meeting and remind the audience of the requests to address board cards that must be completed and submitted to the board secretary if they wish to make a comment to the agenda board policy provides for two cards they're over on our left side by the coffee um blue cards White cards

are to be submitted in order to speak to an agenda item and blue cards to be submitted in order to speak during public comments due to open meeting law board members are not allowed to address items that are not on the agenda and this is per policy BH that brings us to 2A which is the approval of our agenda I move the governing board approve the agenda as presented second all those in favor awesome thank you so um as president this is a little awkward to do we're going to go ahead and move into the OR reorganization of the governing board for 2024 um this last year has been an amazing honor to serve as your president bringing in you know all different kinds of amazing things and working with our board members so I'm

really I was really excited for the last year and um see how it goes from there so um we're going to go ahead and get started for the reorganization of the governing board election and we open the floor for nominations for board presidents I mooved that the governing board approved Sophia CIO as the president for 2024 before we move into um I guess nominations um I would like to hear um I I don't want this rushed um the last nine years or so this has been um this has always been a very traumatic day for me because um um I don't want to dwell on the past um but I think in order to improve on our future as a board we have to learn from the past um the past eight years or so

Dr Lewis has interfered with who's going to be nominated for the board president I know that for a fact um and jeie Castine and Donnie Young took turns being president so that no one else could so that her agenda could be um put ahead of everything else so I don't want to rush this it's it is a little bit political but I would really like to hear those who are nominated how you would like to act as board president and help to to move this board to the Future in a more positive way than we have been in the past eight or nine years I guess so I'd like to hear from from those who are nominated um what you think our biggest challenges as a board as a district and what why your leadership

matters just like as a point of information and H you can correct me if I'm wrong um when we do this unfortunately the way it works you go through the first nomination and if the person is elected after that first nomination there are no other nominations is that correct if there are no other nominations then that person would be the president then Oh I thought we did the nomination you vote on it if it passes say that person is the president if it fails you can ask for other nomination we didn't get a second so the floor is still correct miss mrey you know commented so for right now we don't have a second on that motion okay but once it's seconded we're locked in second and the motion is called to vote then you

know it has to be voted on do we have a second to the motion or any other nomination or any other nominations my apologies well don't we need to move forward on this there's a motion there's a motion not on the table so either we get another nomination or somebody seconds the motion that we have that's the way that it goes so do we have any other nominations for President we have a nomination and a motion on the floor can Will somebody second that motion second all right so we have a motion in a second all those in favor and I'll do roll call please say I miss Gibson McLean you can go ahead and get started well just to also clarify I'm sorry I'm just like making sure we're doing this correctly we can

have discussion before calling it to question if we would if anybody has any things to say okay so you put your discussion up and you stated any other discussion since I'm being nominated I guess I will go ahead and speak um like I said the last year um I believe um the last year being in leadership as president not only I did Vice President eff first last year we did a superintendent search we made sure that we made our student voice a big priority in that superintendent search something that hasn't happened um as president I have been able to change policy as well that hasn't been in years in the school board and I believe the relationships and the networking that I have done across as also sitting as the miracle P count director for

the former um Association of Arizona Schoolboard Association I've made those relationships networks that have been able to introduce us to the wonderful sofg framework that we're working on although that was not solely on me and I'm so thankful that the board was able to you know come together and work on that that was something that I personally did on my own looked out for it had these um meetings talked read and did the work and felt like it was the best interest in the school district after speaking with my colleagues and those are the initiatives that I've taken upon um the school district not only that I love my community and I am in the community every time that I can um I have a one child now I had two children that went to

the school one's already in high school I have a second grader so I have many years ahead of me in this school district and I'm very involved in the community as well well I show up to the events baby showers food distributions I really do care and the most important thing for me is what we're doing for these students and this is why the sofg framework was introduced and as long as I am a Schoolboard member not only as president I will make sure that everything the school district does through policy through their initiatives that our students are being put first because that's who really matters this position as president doesn't matter being a Schoolboard member doesn't matter and none of it matters if we're not doing right by those kids and as president and

as a Schoolboard member of this District you have my word that that is who I have my full vested interest in is no one else but the students that I was elected to serve so having served in this role for some time now what would you say some areas of growth are for you then moving forward um I think my areas of growth had definitely been my relationships um with I should say that you're going to be working on I think I still need to work on my relationships um that's something that's always working being in leadership is a very tough position um it's not always you know your way or what you want to say or have it one-sided you really have to take in account different groups of people and voices so that's

definitely something that I'm going to continue working on and making sure that I'm giving the same access to those um community members that maybe you know are not there necessarily to be very nice to me so that's relationship building is always something that I'm continually working on I didn't know I was being putting on the stand though so since there's a motion and there's I'm G to call for the vote all those in favor are we doing roll call or no yeah we can start with you hi Miss MC cheffrey n and i' like to explain my vote go ahead um so first of all I I was hoping this this wasn't going to be a big rush again because it does seem it's it's not really how it should be we should be able

to talk about why we would like to lead this board um and it's not to put you on the spot it's it's really important I think um what we believe a president stands for and um I think you know this last year has been really challenging we've we've transitioned from a certain superintend endent to a very different superintendent um and I think Miss Creo doll a lot of this being president um is part of your ego which I don't think is you know what it's about um and I think sometimes if you're gonna make public comment I'm going to tell you right now to refrain from making any personal attacks it's not a personal attack your opinions of me are not for public matter so you can discuss it but I will not tolerate that

you understand I understand it's not a personal attack okay we are we are friends okay listen but per our policy the president has no more power than other board members except to create the agenda you don't speak for the governing board on your own unless we we vote to delegate you to do so and I have seen you do that sometimes um and I Pro not intentionally doing it um also while Dr Lewis was in charge I have I had a very difficult time getting agenda items on the agenda special ed for example I was told four or five times that I never emailed Dr Lewis the the the things that she requested and I was told that by you and I copied you on every email and I don't know if it's because you

just weren't checking emails or what was going on but you were being manipulated by her this was delayed for almost a year this special ed conversation that we finally had at the board meeting because she was obstructing it and she was using you um to help her do that um Additionally you mentioned that you were Vice President we don't have a vice president position it's clerk um and that as you told me has no power except for um sitting in your place when you're absent um so I just want going forward to make sure that we work as a board of five not as our our president doing things on her own behind closed doors which again has happened in the past eight years I've watched it and suffered through this as a board member

with every president um so I think it's a particular problem and bad habit we have in kraton that and it's hard I think there are certain things you know it's our our policy is very clear on the powers given to our president but it is hard because you are working with the super tendent to kind of battle on what gets on the agenda but I still have agenda items that are you know going on seven months that still have not gotten on the agenda so that is why I vote no it is not to um it is not to be an obstructionist it is not to hurt your feelings um it's just the things I would like to see going forward in the future not just for your presidency but for going forward for kraton

thank you thank you I miss Michaela I and I'd like to explain my vote um I think we because I do see value in allowing different people to serve as president um throughout the board I think with the work that we have just started with sofg and you had a lot of background work behind that um I feel confident that you can keep that momentum going which is huge because I think it's an incredible undertaking and I don't want to see that momentum get lost thank than you miss SS I motion passes thank you um that brings us to 3B which is the reorganization of the governing board election of governing board clerk for 2024 so now we will entertain motions for clerk do we have any motions uh I'd like to motion that the

governing board approve Heather SS as board Clerk for 2024 I second any discussion I'm GNA go ahead and call for the roll vote um Miss Gibson McLean I'm going to go ahead and get started with you hi Miss MC cheffrey nay and I'd like to explain my vote um Miss SS I just want to um I apologize but um the study session that took place last year again Dr Lewis I believe was manipul man manipul ating you since you've been on the board and the fact that she wanted to remove the word achievement from her goals and she used you to help her try to do that um I think is just and now we're going in the opposite direction with these student outcome Focus Student Government outcome I'm sorry we're going in a direction

of wanting to raise our student achievement and I just think that you also have some some growth to do there um and that's I just I don't see that as a as a leadership for our kids I think I think there's some questions of whether or not our kids can can succeed from you sorry that wasn't called for but um no yes I I motion passes thank you and I cannot wait to work side by side by you um that leads us to 4 a which is public comments Hilda do we have any no we have oh yes yeah we'll do a next board meeting all right and that brings us to um section five and we're going to go ahead and get started with our superintendent report thank you so much thank you so

much Madam president first off I would like to thank all of the board members present um January is School Board member appreciation month and I think our district is very thankful for the board that we have um very much appreciate your hard work and effort and I know that you get um a pretty significant paycheck for all that work so I'm teasing of course board members are unpaid positions so it's a lot of work for pretty much no compensation um also we um were very honored Gateway School and uh uh our students and and our principal um Andy Gutierrez at that school were able to host read to the final four uh kickoff with President Charlie Baker from the NCAA I know some of our our board members were able to be present there as

well and I want to give a a big shout out to coach Shawn pton from our district he is amazing at finding ways to create these opportunities for our kids at our schools and of course to principal gutier for um as I understand the way the story was related to me they needed a school quick and um the word minute the word quick was released Andy got on the phone to let them know that they'd be welcome at Gateway school so we just appreciate so much um coach Payton for his work uh the NCAA for doing that with our students our student not only were read to uh by President Baker but they also each received a book and a and a goodie bag for their time there and I saw them logging reading time

right out of the gate at the event and the point of this is for third grade students um to capture 20 minutes of reading um each day for as many days as they can leading up to the final four as a way to get them in the habit of reading and Coach Peyton has been with our district for like more than 30 years at this yes he's an amazing individual who really is so focused on our kids and um just has so much energy for trying to bring um programs and and opportunities for success for our students and so we're we're very fortunate to have him as as part of our kraton community um we also got word this week that we have been approved uh for an EV bus Grant so if the board

will recall we had a presentation on the solar infrastructure that's going in in the district and it was one of those ironic moments where I said well don't put in the stuff about the bus infrastructure we may need someday and then uh board members ask questions about well are we going to do stuff with the the EV buses and will we need solar at Transportation well the answer is yes because now um we've received approval for this grant which will pay for uh not the entirety of the cost but will significantly offset the cost of US adding two electric buses to two EV buses to our Fleet um which will be a start for for getting that Fleet converted and will also help somewhat with the costs related to the necessary infrastructure but our the

team at ver has also committed to helping within the solar project try to help help offset uh the costs related to that setup um uh Dr dupin and um Emily wasik and I um had an opportunity we had some Outreach from the Arizona Republic and uh were interviewed this afternoon about the new build at Kennedy so there will be uh some Arizona Republic coverage coming up here about you know the exciting new uh Outdoor Learning uh school that will be opening at uh the corner there of Osborn in 28th and then um you have in front of you I think copies of the Epic kids um issue here from December of 2023 and we're very excited that the cover story um features two of our students from excellencia school who won uh the Arizona State

Fair art competition so um they're seeing on on the cover displaying their winning art pieces um very proud of those students and if the board would like we'd be excited to see if the students would be willing to join us at a future board meeting so that the board can recognize them as well and I know Google is free but what is epic kids and why do we always get shown this what is it and why do I always get sh um so epic kids is a publication that goes out that's focused on um sharing the great things that are happening out at schools like any publication of course it's it's fun through the advertising in Epic kids and one of the one of the places that we advertise our schools and programs is in

Epic kids and as part of that um because we're sort of in their Network um we do occasionally get featured for stories so I'm not trying to ruin our no it's all good don't tell all the other stud like you can have student submit articles in it like if you walk into the district office they have one framed and it's somebody's child in the front at billmore prep I'm not going to say whose kid it's is being centered you I did happen to notice that a board member's child was was in there so I'm not I'm not gonna lie about that so um and and epic kids I think the publication used to have a different name a couple of years ago and we've been I think working with them since Miss wasik joined the

district so it's probably been close to eight years now six years now that we've been um working with the Epic kids publication so cool they're great partners and I wanted this to be short but I just have to share the story unfortunately you will notice should fit us next each other yeah it is a pro we are a problem together but um that's not supposed to be a part of my report though but the um the Epic kids publication you will notice looks very similar to our Craton Communicator that goes out every year and that format for our Craton commun Communicator came to us because our partnership's been so good with this group that they connected us with the print house that they use and the person who helps with the layout and it actually

reduced our cost for sending out the communicator by like a third Emily is that sound right so our cost went down by a third but the quality of what our community receives actually went up even with that reduction in cost so so those are the kinds of Partnerships we really like where we're working together to make things better for uh our community and being very frugal with taxpayer dollars as best we can um and then Tuesday January 23rd is our 100th day of schools coming up so of course that's usually a pretty big milestone for us every year but prior to the 23rd um just want to um point out that Monday schools will be closed for the observance of Dr Martin Luther King Jr day um and of course students will be returning to

school the next day on Tuesday with us so um with that I will gladly shorten to the end my way too long comments for this evening thank you Mr Man Miss sis you want to go ahead and get us started with our board reports sure thanks I just hope everybody had a great Break um and restful I I know I did and I my little four-year-old nephew here for the first time from Washington and my favorite part was that every time he saw a cactus he's like there's a cactus there's a cactus because he lives in Washington the state of Washington and it's you know totally different climate and environment here so um we spent a lot of time like at the Botanical Gardens and stuff so he could see all all of the cactus

and stuff so I had a good time with him Miss MB um yeah just ditto I hope um people were actually able to relax some over a Break um and that you weren't all like me where I used it to get caught up on the work that needed to be done for January um so I hope everyone was able to relax some and is excited for the new quarter and second semester thank you Miss MC cheffrey yeah one thing I forgot to add um Miss Creo doll was I do really appreciate many of the things that you brought to us last year as president especially the student outcome focused governance um and I do think that's that's the direction that this District should be going in it's incredibly frustrating that um student achievement has not

been on the top of our goals um for the past eight years or go or so um so I really appreciate you recognizing that and getting us all focused on that um and I I look forward to for that for that bringing us something for this District I hope thank you Miss um I was going to say Miss Katie I'm Sorry Miss Gibson McQueen that's fine with me um Katie so I guess I've been on not I guess I've been on the board it'll be a year on the 12th um and I would say coming into this uh position oh yeah yeah yeah um things were a lot different obviously last January on the board and in administration and so I think coming into this I was a little anxious about where we were going

and what what kind of things were going to look like both procedurally and politically in this board and I honestly wasn't really that excited about how things were at the time that I came on the board it wasn't a great thing to step right into um I will say that um you know over the last year I think that collectively we've um made a lot of progress I think that um theyve there have been some really difficult conversations there have been some difficult um executive sessions there have been some you know just difficult times out socially I think in general um it felt it's felt at certain times of the beginning of the year a little more tumultuous I will say you know I am ready to focus on where we're at right now and

moving forward I while I had some concerns at the beginning of my term about you know kind of people's intentions or or where things lied what I what I do know is that you know hindsight Is 2020 when you're swimming in something you can't always see what it is and so like I know that everybody on this board is competent capable Prof like you all are professionals um we're here I I also know that we all have a certain capacity right and so like there's only five of us and uh we all have jobs outside of this and so I think when it comes down to like who has the capacity to take things on um and and what place we're in I think we're in the right position right now tonight after the leadership

um change in situation I would hope that things are heard even if things aren't delivered in the right way that they're heard in terms of um con genuine concerns about maybe you know agenda items and so forth um I think that you know I would hope moving forward as we've discussed in our student outcomes focused governance that we can um be professional amongst each other and even on a personal and human capacity in addressing things when they rise and not later on down the road so that things can be you know adequately addressed and don't feel like a pile on later on so I would just hope that everyone's on board with that kind of agreement moving forward um I agree that these are are important roles and that obviously our board as a whole

has an important role and even if um it doesn't seem powerful agenda setting is very powerful and and I think we heard both of those things tonight and they I don't think that they can necessarily both be true or untrue but um there is some power in setting the agenda and so there's something to be said in that um rather than Ramble On I just kind of wanted to get where my headspace was at because why not I don't usually talk during my board report very much so I hope everyone had a good break I took a week off of work hung out with my kids they're four and two they're always sick they're sick again right now uh um I don't know I didn't really do anything no vacation it took my kids to

see the snow that was fun but other than that it was just a good time with my family I got a little bit of rest right back in the grind at work um and then just again reaffirming to me and to all of you that this work that we're doing with achievement and in this District I mean it has direct direct impacts when I am requesting records for my client from this District it tells you what kind of impact you're having if I'm representing people who used to be students here right and so really think about that on a daily basis it has direct impacts 10 20 30 years down the road okay um and so that's just something I want people to be cognizant of because it might not be something you're thinking about

or that's in your face every day thank you so I only have a couple of reports I know that um Mr man touched on the final four I was really exciting to be at that and see all the kids get excited for reading and it was an extra um fun because Wheezy was there um if any we have any Suns fans he's the one that commentates over there so that was exciting to see him saying little wa no not way they call him didn't even call me so um that was really exciting um the kids really said that they were going to get on their readings so they can make it to the final four so it happens out of all the school districts that have been um participating in it they will have final

four and they get busted from the school all the way to the championship and it's a really cool thing that they get to do since the um Championship is going to be here in Arizona um so the kids were really excited and anything that we can do to get them excited about reading especially given the goal you know the results that we've gotten for our student outcomes it's is much needed um I'm also really excited um I know that we've been hearing about a lot of sofg the student out outcome focused governance framework I got accepted into the cohort so that's going to start um rolling around it's going to be I believe until September commitment we're going to meet bi-weekly I have to go in person and it's going to take a lot of

time but this is a commitment that I am I'm going to give to my district so we can get better implementation of how our student outcomes can change um and that's also open to every board member up here so if you guys would like to be more active it's open to any of you guys up here as well um I would like to comment on our food distribution that we had our Family Resource Center I Family Resource Center I always brag about them because they're the epitome that holds this community um Community together um we had about more than 45 families show up for that um food distribution and in those 45 families we had about four different families that had just gotten here from a different country and they all enrolled their kids at

papao so that was really great this is why you know the community work that we do having a Family Resource Center is so important because they are the ones that connect our families and our students to our schools and we all know that if we have strong healthy communities then we have strong healthy schools so big shout out to them um if anybody or any board members anybody else they're always needing help um they post it their calendar they do it twice a month and they're open and you guys can go and help distribute food to our community so that's open for all of us as well and the last update that I have is um the Dual language um I know that we're in uh lawsuit right now so we have an oral argument

that's scheduled on January 12th and basically what that oral or oral argument is is that there was a motion to dismiss a response and a reply all the parties get to have a fun onour court hearing in front of the judge the judge hears everybody's arguments and then it's going to take another 30 to 60 days for us to find out the ruling from the judge Jud after the oral argument so I know a lot of I've been getting a lot of emails texts that's what's happening the January 12th is the hearing at 11: in the morning I think you can see them online 10 sorry at 10 I think you could see it online um Maricopa County a supremor court has a way for you to watch live hearings but we're not going to

have an answer they usually take you know 30 to 60 days to come out with a ruling so we're still on standby until we hear from the judge and then that is some my update I forgot to plug that we have a student conduct meeting next Tuesday at 5:00 in this room please come please watch online it's tons of fun yes those are really really important just because we're going through all these student um behavior um policy changes something that hasn't been done in years in the district either so I'm really excited that that's getting done okay that ends my report um and that brings us to our item C which is the student outcomes Focus governance update with our goals and guard rails um let's open this up do we are we able to

put these on the screen for people yeah you have them hel to put up thank you and Mr Man if you um want to go ahead and get started on this this conversation well I guess I can do it first but we our November 14th we did our draft board goals and we kind of shared those with everybody um these last other meetings that we did we did was was called draft aboard guard rails um I'm gonna wait until they go uh yeah because it's hard to there we go a yeah so draft board guard rails so this is um oh those are board goals and we saw those last time and these are the goals yes the guard rails please um these are the draft guard rails that we came up as a school

board and I'm going to read them out loud but I know that everybody can can read them but it says first one the board will spend no less than 50% of its meeting time monitoring progress on student outcome goals starting at0 today and will be 50% by the end of the second quarter of 20 24 these guard rails are important for the board as well to have because it sets a president of if we're not here in two three four six seven years this is going to set a foundation of what the board members should be doing by telling them you know no more than 50% moving forward needs to be on student outcomes this is a new implementation we're going to be doing and these are considered draft right now because we haven't taken

them out to you guys to the Community to talk So the plan is is after they're presented here we're going to go out to the schools and I not sure if we figured it out if we're going to be doing them in the cafesito or how that's going to work but what we were planning to do is having these goals or these guard rails out to the community before our next community council meeting and having the last community council meeting as the last feedback from the community if these guard rails if they feel like these guard rails or the goals that we have are in aligned with their values um go ahead Mr man I was just going to say we've um done Outreach to the principles um to get board members access to the

caitos but we do have a few schools that don't have them so we've asked for dates to be set up at those schools perfect and once those go out we will make sure that they get sent out they're blasted everywhere because we really want to hear from the community um one of the awesome things that we've had in place is the the Strategic plan and because we've have been working on that strategic plan for the past few years we kind of have a sense of what the community wants we've been listening and when they brought us this information this is how we came up with these guard rails um we didn't just blindly do that up here and say this sounds like a good idea we took some of the Strategic plan information um that

they had and we kind of drafted these the SEC yeah go ahead yeah yeah go ahead just to add to that when the um when the goals were brought to last Community Council there was space for the attendees to give that's right pre like here's the basics of what guardrails are and we want some initial suggestions and we were able to go through and read even some of us weren't able to attend Community Council but we were able to look at all of that written feedback and kind of say okay here's a huge theme emerging you know everybody mentioned this everybody mentioned this so like she said this was not pulled out of nowhere This truly was was pulled from the trends that we saw overwhelmingly our community is concerned about and wants to be

a priority going on to that um I know that there weren't like a our normal attendance numbers of the last Community Council that being said I'm wondering how difficult it would be to engage those specific people I did see a disconnect in the understanding of what a guard rail was and so I would be interested in showing the folks that attended that Community Council these guard these proposed guard rails and maybe things would click a little better now that they've seen both the guard goals and the guard rails um to give them I think these guard rails address many of the concerns that they had in their feedback and so it would be nice to try to engage those specific people in some way I just don't I forget like if there's a signin sheet

or how that works yeah I I don't know that we have sign-ins captured for everybody or that just because we have a sign in that we'd have a way to reach them we do have planned for our February Community Council that will be bringing all of this back so hopefully you know those folks will be in attendance and we can you know we can share with the schools to please make sure those who were in attendance last time um are made aware that any concerns and things that they raised you know we'll be coming back to those as we come back to the guard rails and the goals um at that February community council meeting and that date we had to change that date right Hilda yes we changed it to February 9th I believe

yeah whatever that next Thursday yeah I think originally it was like the second and we had them first it was the first okay so it must be the eth yeah whatever that next th yeah the eth yeah um and Miss Gibson McAn just to clarify the site councils before the community council meeting might be a good way of getting those parents to because usually the parent leison know what parents show up to the meetings and that's why we're going to go to each School present this information and hopefully they'll have that opportunity to get more clarification on the two but that's the whole purpose of doing the site councils before we go back into the the community council meeting what are you calling the site councils because we don't have site councils um caitos yeah

that's why I kind of want to incorporate them with the caitos because we already have that system in place so hopefully we're we're trying to work through that um the second board guard rail is the board will not allow five years to pass without an equity audit a policy review and a sped review um this is huge policy review I cannot imagine when the last policy review audit that we had it's been years and this is why the whole discipline committee got even got started and um changing the discipline policies that we have because conduct sorry this student conduct our student conduct um review because because we've had some of those policies in there for 20 30 40 years so that guard Ra was important the board will not operate without an annual self-evaluation of

strength and weaknesses and a plan for team building and board professional development that includes includes anti-racist training um one of the things that we're learning through this framework is that if we are evaluating others administrators why are we not doing that to ourselves so we need to be the role models of what we're doing and what we expect the district to do so as a board um we will go into that annual self- evaluation we haven't done that in years um as well um the board will conduct its duties without including students I'm sorry the board will not conduct its duties duties without including students families teachers and community members inclusive of those that speak languages other than English in a manner that inspires broad Community ownership of board policy that one's pretty self-explanatory we

don't really want any feedback or administrators or anybody coming to us and saying this huge change well what about what's the community think do we have any stakeholder voice so that's what that is and the last one is the board will not perform or appear to perform any of the responsibilities delegated to the superintendent do we I know we're going to community council with this but and I know we're going to eventually vote on it but are we going to have an opportunity for another so session or somewhere where we're discussing like the actual Logistics of what this some of actually falling through with some of these are going to look like yeah so after we vote and adopt these which brings me no no no yeah it's okay [Music] um I'm pulling up that

document so after these are adopted what's next is prepare the measurables once they're adopted and that's something that the superintendent will work either with our coach um CTO or his team and then they bring the measurables to those goals um to make sure that but that's something that the superintendent brings to us and that's when we can start working on that to see how we achieve those and you know the midpoints I guess the one I was most particularly interested interested in was number three because I don't know that that's something the superintendent's going to bring to us and how we're going to actually Implement number three as oh okay um that's something that we would have to talk to um CTO about I know that I believe that the framework comes with some board

um evaluations I know asba yeah they have some evaluations the sofg framework and I know asba had some too but we can come together and work and we may need to do a study session then to see how that's going to look like in s in in stone but that's something that we can discuss and and um you know as is has been philosophically the way we've been treating all of this I'm not intending to work with Dr Ramos on the administrative side solo um we'll be having him work with the executive team um we'll also be asking him if he can um work with our entire Leadership Council our directors and our principles so one of the things that we can do is we can probably help bring some information for item number three

that will you know not put the board in the position to have to do all the leg work to find these things um so we we can bring some recommendations and some solutions back to the board and Mr R I think he had said um that when you guys do that next study session you guys would also do your self evaluation at that time okay sorry no it's okay and and it's important and it's good that you're asking this questions that way you know whoever's watching to knows what the next steps would be um perfect let me go switch back sorry okay and and then so that goes um and then the last piece of it is the superintendent guard rails too which are really important as well um the superintendent will not cause or

allow conditions practices or procedures that are inequitable or insufficient for students the superintendent will not allow the ineffective implementation of social emotional learning strategies to support effective teaching and learning in a safe inclusive climate and culture and once again um I'd be remissed if I didn't mention that we have some amazing school board members with us tonight and one of those um one of the school districts neighboring school district has implemented some of these as well and as you look at different school districts they are going to look a little bit different depending on what community they're serving so this is why it's so important that um one of the feedback that I got in one of the community councils is like well we've seen this work here here and it's not working in this

and why is this different well each Community is different and we really want to use the voice of our communities and this is how we get this information so with other school districts they may look a little bit different but at the end of the day it's all the student outcomes and the adult behaviors you know student outcomes don't change until the adult Behavior has changed um and then number three the superintendent will not allow the district to operate without students having effective school-based wraparound support systems access to a Family Resource Center and access to an um Community Education Center those are very tailored to us because we do have a Family Resource Center and a Community Education Center that do amazing work not only with their Community but our parents like GED programs and

we want to make sure that stays in the district no matter who's here um the superintendent will not allow the district to operate without a system to recruit and retain strong teachers by empowering staff through relevant and differentiated professional development and the superintendent and this is one of my favorite ones the superintendent shall not allow adult convenience or preference to take take priority over the academic progress of students and that one is a huge one because a lot of the times we get complacent in our eyes and where we forget why we're doing or why changes have to do be done in order for our students to be okay it's not about us it's about our students and with that that drafts basic I mean that wraps up basically the last two study sessions that

we've working sessions that we've had on superintendent guard rails board guard rails and board goals this is just a preview like I said the next steps are going into probably the cafesito um to talk to our families get as many parents there and then the last push will be at the community council before we bring it back for revision and if we need to make any edits and start adopting um the goals in the guard rails Mr man did you have anything else to add the only thing that I would add is believe on the superintendent's guard rails for guard rail number one assuming that it remains in place after the feedback and review um we do have two of the measurables already established around those based on concerns that the board raised during the

conversation we actually folded what could have been two more guard rails as measurables under guard rail oh yeah we did talk about that but they're not on here yeah well because they haven't been finalized yet perfect perfect um awesome and I love it see already thinking ahead all right and that concludes our student outcomes and focus governance update we will have more updates and one of the things that you're going to start seeing different too is in our agenda is that in the future we are going to start having an area just for student outcomes Focus governance work and that's when we will know that 50% of our time is being spent and all that fun stuff so just so you guys know we haven't really done it yet but it is in the works

and that brings us to six which is approval of consent um do you want to go ahead and make the motion since you have something to pull um I'd like to a motion to approve 6 a through c and e and f Miss htis at 710 and Miss mcre is leaving can I pull C too I'm sorry so a through b okay I'll you want me to modify sorry I motioned to approve 6 a b e and f so we're pulling okay and all right yeah all those in favor I I I all right do send do you wan to cover C sure it's first yes so I was just going to draw attention to I saw a huge donation from Crossroads Inc in here to Lolinda help pay outstanding lunch balances of $20,000 um

I'm not going to get into like things I've read online I know that the crossroads intake facility is within our district and it's near Linda and that you know there's a lot of contentious uh opinions about its location I just um I think that it's um it's great to see this investment from that organization who serves our community um in trying to help folks achieve long-term sobriety many of those people are probably from this community as well and so um it's great to see them give you back to our district and and trying to help out in such a big way um and so I just wanted to draw attention to that yeah um thank you for bringing that up and $20,000 is a huge balance I don't think I've ever seen that kind of

I mean maybe I have in the past but for uh an organization that's within our district that is willing to support our students and this is a lunch de balance okay and I want to bring attention to that this is a basic necessity that all students should have no questions asked and for community members I just want community members around that area to know that this um what is it uh facility it's the intake and the detox yeah that the facility literally has helped us feed our children in this community and that should be the number one priority so we are very thankful for that and thank you for bringing that up we need to approve that one first oh yes so I move to approve uh agend item 6C second all those in favor

I I I um and then I wanted to pull D um because it is about sending some staff to the IST conference um which I'm currently saving up to send myself um but um I it's a really amazing conference every year I'm super excited that this district is recognizing the value of sending more staff members um including instructional and non-instructional um also I wanted to pull it and highlight it because um one of the people going will be Jeff guire and he and I recently a couple weeks ago got accepted to present at the IST conference so I wanted to shout out Jeff and we'll be presenting about our journey with opening virtual schools after the pandemic and all of that fun stuff so that was it thank you you want to go ahead and

move to approve it yes I move we approve 6D I second that all those in favor I all right perfect that go ahead and brings us to Personnel section 8A approval of interim assistant principal for Gateway Elementary School and Dr Lauren I'll turn it over no Mr Man my apologies I there's no ego to bruise over here Dr Lauren is absolutely the right person you're more than welcome to turn it directly to him Dr Lauren thank you president CIO and members of the board uh Gateway School conducted an interview process in December to fill the interim assistant principal position for the balance of the school year there were two candidates that were interviewed and the recommendation moving forward is to approve Mr James Diaz as the interim assistant principal at Gateway School Mr Diaz began

his career as a band teacher in the kraton school district in the year 2000 23 years ago he has worked at multiple schools and is respected as a leader among his peers Mr Diaz currently serves as co-chair for the governing board advisory on discipline policies he's been a leader and a past president of the kraton Education Association Mr Diaz has been actively involved in a variety of District committees including meetting infer budget advisory and teacher evaluation Mr Diaz completed his administrative certification at builtmore Preparatory Academy completing his master's degree in education and educational leadership and Innovation from Arizona State University and holds a bachelor's degree in music from University of Arizona so we are proud to bring Mr Diaz forward as a candidate yay I'm really excited about this one so I move the governing

board approve Mr James Diaz for the position of interim assistant principal effective January 8 2024 second all those in favor I Yay Mr Diaz and you already know got come up and speak you already know the drill um I'm just really excited the last three years that I've been here I've had nothing but beautiful experiences and interactions with Mr Diaz and I've seen how you are you know Through My Lens of when I'm walking around and just to see you with the kids is amazing and that's what we need we need more people that you know that's one of the things that I always say you can't teach people to care you can always teach people on how to play music notes or how to do an instrument or how but you can never teach

people to care so I'm really excited for this yeah thank you for the opportunity um it's it's been really great um I've gotten a lot of support a lot of help I got a flower back there hopefully hopefully I won't kill it um but uh yeah it's so it's just been really really awesome I um I gotten a lot of advice and support from people just earlier today I had a conversation with Dr dear about because I'm a I'm a list maker I'm a planner I'm that relative that you hate on family vacations uh because I'm like five o'clock it's 5 o'clock we're supposed to go over here we're suppos so sometimes that's not always well-received uh but so I was going through my to-do list and Dr Mar was like yeah you're going to

want to set that aside because you know if you get through three or four things and be flexible that's your way to go so um uh and I people are saying it's like you know you got to have the right attitude the right aptitude and relationships and that's that's my wheelhouse right that's the bulk of my training from organizing and everything else I'm I'm I'm really really uh that's really really important thing to me right so I have a couple a little like personal vision statements right I have my little bumper sticker slogans that I like and one of them is if it's not broken don't fix it but you can make it better so I like that kind of thing um and the other one is always keep trying always keep trying um and

that's kind of like where uh restored practices comes in I'm a huge big uh proponent of restored practices during the interview process one of the things I was talking about was like I don't want to live in a world where we just kind of stop um lots of uh administrators lots of teachers they have conversations about you know behavior and what do we do how does this work and what can we do what are our other options because the the the when you give up the phrase that always comes to mind is a phrase that was popular years ago which was the school to prison pipeline type of thing and I just I don't want to live in a world that's like that so uh the sort of practices are kind of a big big

deal for me and uh implementing those and being a part of those right and uh um I think that that's something that's a really powerful part of it right and my leadership Heroes I always tell people my leadership heroes are Bob and Fred um Bob Ross Fred Rogers uh because uh there's that quote that Fred Rogers when they were talking about when traumatic situations are going on you know what do you do and he said something to the effect of always look for the helpers right there's always there's always someone in the chaos that is trying to do a little bit better than someone else around and that's something I really kind of take to heart um uh full disclosure though I am not Bob Ross I am not Fred Rogers um if some of

you I've known for years and years and years I'm not the same person I was years ago um years ago uh there was a a friend of mine someone I very respect said to me it's like you know uh your the the the moniker was uh accidental and I'll keep it G-rated accidental mean person and they used another a word that was really let figure that out yourself um and I kind of snickered a little bit and I was like and I thought yeah you know because I I want to be honest with people and um I reflected on that and I thought to myself it's like you know um uh at the end of the day you're just being mean right you you're you it's not what you say it's the way you say

things right a little bit of reflection on that and now I have to go back and make phone calls to significant others and do a lot of apologizing for some of the things that I said to people um but I I really really truly believe in that right that's a big thing for me it's not what you say it's the way you say things and there are ways that you can build relationships and have collaboration and be Grassroots about things and do it in a way that is not g to hurt because as soon as you hurt people shut down and you're not able to have genuine conversations so that's kind of where I'm at as an individual and thank you so much for the opportunity and uh the and I'm gonna do my very

best to not let people down so thank you well also just want to plug again thank you for being our committee chair yeah student conduct committee so it goes hand inand um and and then just the conversations we've had there and then had one conversation with you in the parking lot I'm actually grateful that someone that asks questions and pushes back on things is in leadership I think we need more of that and that's promising and hopeful for me um in this position um and apparently we probably were in the same room like 13-year-old me and my bass clarinet with the Abbotts and you we probably all in the same room and now I just like voted for you to get this job yeah it's kind of little there's a little bit of trauma because

some of the kids that I teach I taught their parents so yeah yeah I got the gray hairs to show it I got that from you your mom gave me that no but uh yeah it's so it's been a it's been a it's been a ride so thank you for still being here because that's a feet in of itself to be here that long this is my home so thank you so much we're so excited congratulations all right that brings us to our next item which is 8B um board initiate Direction on meet and confer per policy HB and HC and we're waiting for the slideshow yeah I'm not okay we're getting no signal don't make Russell more anxious there we go it's cold yeah last meeting it was very hot in here so I

prefer it we're balancing all right Dr Lauren you're gonna go ahead and get us started with this so our interest based negotiation Pro process has started for this upcoming school year year uh we began our first meeting on November 29th and we are seeking guidance from the governing board about the principles that you would like us to use moving forward in this process uh and then we will present those principles to the team at our next meeting on Wednesday the 17th um I'm just going to say one of the things that um we did make an adjustment on was the alignment with student outcomes focused governance goals and I want us to make sure that whenever we're in these committees and sending these ideas or the ideas right to us that we're really putting our

students first how is your 5% rise going to impact our students how is your instructional time increasing or decreasing going to affect our student outcomes we want to make sure that the recommendations that are coming through because I I feel me personally that's the question that I'm going to ask how is this going to impact um our students in the classroom I know sometimes it's really easy to get well I deserve a higher pay and I deserve this and I deserve that how is that action Behavior going to affect the students um so I know before we had the alignment with the Strategic plan Miss Katie Gibson McLean made the recommendation of switching it over to student outcomes and that's a conversation within the Committees that needs to be ttoo that as a board I

believe we are going to be seeking those kind of um questions on how is this impacting what we're trying to achieve which is getting our 0% black students to pass at least a test I don't know if we have any other comments questions no I mean just that the other four are remaining the same because they encompass the right four major challenges that we tend to see right and um being able to make sure that we keep those in mind and um you know having the meet and confer process and having those groups of people come together and hopefully getting some ideas that none of us or the executive team have thought about um that's what we look forward to most out of the meet and confer process so I think those are all the

ments and or recommendation recommendations that we have thank you I appreciate your guidance perfect and that brings us to um agenda item number 10 which is business and plant and this is for the approval of resolutions to reduce the square footage of larcy Kennedy School M thank you Madame President and governing board members uh when a school district changes the amount of square footage on a campus it must be approved by the school facilities board the process requires the school district governing board to approve a resolution for the change in square footage resolution from sfb that we have to use is attached the rebuild of Larry C Kennedy School resulted in a campus totaling 6,752 square feet which is a reduction of 7,511 square feet from the previous campus total of 78263 square feet the

attached resolution captures these numbers for the update of SSB records we moved that the or we request recommend I'm sorry ah that the board members approved the attached resolution um may ask a question of why it was reduced I I believe that the design feature of uh twostory building um did create some efficiencies in that square footage that was not included in the original build of the older prior campus is that correct yeah and if I could add to that Miss Shapiro that that campus was kind of an odd compilation of the the original school campus and a church property that was amended to it and so there were several buildings that were on that church property that the district used for a variety of purposes over the years that really weren't you know entirely

focused on the function of the school so I know like curriculum and assessment at one time was in one of the older Church buildings that was over there and um there was actually an old parsonage house that was there that I think Junior Ambassador housed out of for a period of time in technology housed out it for a period of time so some some of those buildings were pretty ancient and they weren't really efficient for the operation of of a school and then we had some safety hazards on the campus which is why a lot of those things came down um and there didn't really it didn't seem to make sense to replace those structures since they really weren't part of the school function okay thank you for that any other questions or comments okay

I move the governing board approve the resolutions to reduce square footage at larcy Kennedy School second all those in favor I I okay and this brings us um to the revision of the governing board policy bedb and this is the first reading um so I brought this forth and I'm just going to discuss it a little bit this is where the um restructuring of the agenda happens so one of the things that um we're adding is basically switching our superintendent reports after governing board member reports just because a lot of the times um stuff gets double infoed um we're going to go ahead and do the student outcomes Focus governance um placeholder and then after that we want to do public comments and the reason why is I want the public to be able to

hear what's going on the updates what's working and what's not working and if somebody within the meeting has a question or wants to talk about something they have the opportunity to do the that after the agenda item I know that they can always pull a card to a certain agenda item but not a lot of the times our me our people in the public know how that works so this is a little bit more um easy for them to follow and then moving approval of consent agenda item after that um this was a great idea by a fellow colleague because then that differentiates where our student outcomes Focus governance and then we break off to the public comments and then right after that we get to our business is there any way to just put

this up so people oh my God I thought it was the whole time I am so sorry I didn't know sorry yes we can I apologize I thought it was up there he goes it's just minor tweaks um just to make sure that it's going with the S so framework and that we're going to hold ourselves accountable to that 50% of um talking about student outcomes while we're at the board meeting so this is the first read um do we have any questions comments I think it reflects what we talk I think it reflects um we had kind of alluded to the idea of of doing this restructuring when we did one of the studies sessions um and I think this captures kind of the direction we were going in uh yes I know we're

talking about the changes which are in red my concern is that I never knew subsection B existed to governing board member reports at least in the parenthesis and I'm not sure we've been abiding by that I was gonna ask about that too and you know what it does not that's just kind of there but it's not something that has to be put on there okay I was curious if it was part of Statute and then I was like wow and you guys can speak on it you know you guys just can't have a discussion certainly but like if we're because I read this the same way where like if we're gonna approve this as our new agenda to me this says our new policy or yeah like or well our policy about agenda to me

this is like I need to specify ahead of time what I'm this has always been on there yeah it's not new it's been on there I yeah we just failed it looking you don't have to you just can't discuss okay like when you guys were discussing the Epic kids you guys were like this close just like something do some PA so controversial attach a buzzer to me from now on you're not supposed to be discussing because it wasn't posted so got it I guess like what do we need those words do we alter them like I just feel I read this and it sounds like I need to like we can remove them if you want I don't think for the second reading mean anything yeah you know but it can definitely be remoted like

do you interpret this like you like how do you interpret that wording because because you know what it was not always in there somewhere along the way when asba made a change they kind of added it in there but it was not always there so it can definitely be yeah for I think for the second one maybe we just remove the parenthesis wording and leave it at reports yeah because this sounds like we would have to give you bullet points on what we're going to include and you would have to post those like that's can't tell I don't even know what I'm saying until I'm saying it and I don't even know if I really am knowing what I'm saying when I'm saying I will put a strike through on for a second read okay

okay that works cool awesome thank you for bringing that up any other questions or comments all righty and that brings us to Future agenda items do we have any future agenda items I have one um I want us to discuss continuing our membership with the Arizona School Board Association and then I'll send that over any other future agenda items I don't know if this is an agenda item you can tell me probably not I brought it up to J it was about trying to get some more professional head shot done for us and maybe there's a time we can schedule with um at the at like a future board meeting where we can all be ready to take a photograph so that we look a little more not saying that any of us look horrible

in our photos but maybe just I'm ready I know exactly what you mean just try to be nice and and I I did Disc discuss it with molic and she'd like she thinks it's relatively inexpensive she'd like to look into getting a Studio within the district to do the head shot for us so that way they can be in a better controlled lighting environment than this lighting um and we'll hopefully end up with better photos that way and we'll forar you guys okay have forewarning instead of like smile you're getting snapped right now awesome not today perfect surprise I planned this's A Brave day no all right hearing no other future agenda items I motion we ad adjourn second all those in favor I gracias W noes have a good night
